CL’d.

I was going to post this earlier, but thought it would be too speculative; I stand corrected.

I’m not entirely sure that Mueller is going to get to lay charges against Trump, Trump family members or the members of the RNC who committed treason to conspire to work with an adversary country to influence an election, before the Constitutional showdown in the Supreme Court begin.

Multiple lawyers have submitted briefs to the Supreme court to rule that Whitaker is not legally the Attorney General as he has not been legally appointed. Those lawyers have also asked for the case to be heard urgently, as otherwise untangling the mess made by having someone sign legal documents as the attorney general, but not having the authority to do so, will be a very difficult task.

It’s pretty clear (to me) that Whitaker was not appointed legally, which should mean the Supreme Court should strike down his appointment, which would massively weaken Trumps defense against Mueller.

Under the horrendous scenario that the Supreme Court allows Whitaker’s appointment to stand, it massively weakens the Senate’s ability to limit the power of the Executive.

Although the Republicans must have dreamed of doing this for years (at least while a Republican is President), its hard to imagine all of the Republicans on the supreme court would be willing to do this while Trump is president.

Of course, kicking this show-down off before Mueller lays charges might be a deliberate ploy to try to make the fight be about something else, other than pure treason.

And yes, about the only way they could say Whitaker is legally the AG, is if we see the principle of “rules don’t matter if you’re a Republican” be officially set as precedent at the Supreme Court level, so that it can be cited in lower courts across the country.

re: #3 Danack

Mueller’s already submitted that his authority is not undermined or affected by whoever is the AG, Whitaker or otherwise.

The cases in the SDNY and EDNY will continue.

Trump’s entire case is that advice and consent doesn’t matter. That’s it. And even the right wing extremists know that this is a dangerous precedent and lays bare that the GOP doesn’t care what the Constitution says, even the plain language.

So the odds are that they wont go along with this. Roberts is not about to engage in a suicide pact with Trump and destabilize the entire judiciary in the process.

Still, the more I look at popular media, I’m convinced that HGTV is as guilty as Fox or Sinclair or the hate-radio networks.

America… litigious to the bitter end:

Man says he was told wrong Powerball cutoff time, files $700 million lawsuit

A Charleston man has filed a lawsuit seeking $700 million over allegations he was told the incorrect cutoff time to play the Powerball lottery in 2017 at a Texas convenience store.

Eric Vondrake filed his complaint in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia against 7-Eleven Inc., Multi-State Lottery Association, Mavis L. Wanczyk, the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, Southwest Convenience Stores, Rahkee P. Sharma, Pawan R. Sharma and the Texas Lottery Commission alleging negligence, negligent misrepresentation and other counts.

[…]

I guess the guy is going the federal court route because state laws all protect their lotteries from being liable to whatever their resellers do.

So this clown is claiming that he’s basically owed the full prize money, because he couldn’t buy (what he is assuming would be a jackpot-winning) ticket in good time?
I think a fair solution would be to prorate his claim by the odds against winning the whole shebang: So if he wants $700MM, and the odds of a winning ticket are (IIRC) one in 350MM - he should be awarded $2.00.
Fair enough?

It’s going to come out that Trump has dementia or some several psychological issues that should have prevented him from being anywhere near power and the Republicans all knew about it but decided preventing HRC from being elected was more important.

A reminder to all who feel that HRC’s defeat shows that a woman cannot win: Putin had a special personal grudge against Hillary and wanted her defeat, regardless of who the GOP selected among their 17 candidates. It does not appear that any of the current Dem prospects would ignite Putin’s passions. So to the extent that Putin’s interference affected the results, that would not apply to other nominees.

he doesnt have a chance as of right now

A Hill.TV American Barometer survey of 1,001 registered voters conducted Nov. 16-17 found that Trump would easily defeat onetime presidential rival, Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Among self-identified Republican respondents, 67 percent said they would choose Trump while only 14 percent said they would back the outgoing Ohio governor.

The key phrase is “self-identified Republican”.

As we saw in the recent election here in California, even long time Republican districts went for the Democratic candidate.

The GOP is shrinking, and as Trump heads off into more derangement that shrinking will continue.

Or, are we to worry about Trump and The Supreme Court ruining Democracy in this country forever? /

So I watched the little thing between Morning Joe and Tom Nichols where MJ outed Nichols as someone who prefers Boston to Led Zeppelin and I thought they both suck. Morning Joe and Tom. I never really liked Boston (I went to see them in 8th grade—my first concert—and got a headache as I listened to a concert that was basically their album) and the same year I went to a late-night film of “Song Remains the Same” that my friends were all excited about and thought Jimmy Page was a wanker and it bored me to tears and sleep.

My standing theory remains most of these people have no ideology, and are just attaching themselves to whatever shit feeds their narcissistic instinct that they deserve to do whatever they want. But they’re too scared to truly be outlaw, so they need a social support structure to give them that sense of bro invincibility and nudge deeper and deeper into antisocial behavior.

Real consequences scratched on Gavin’s door, so he’s fucking scarpering. He’ll be back to similar shit once he feels safe again.

Small, weak men are dangerous precisely because they’re small and weak…they punch down because they’re too cowardly to face an even match.

Yup. The stated reason was having a new account after being suspended but my last Tweet was a retweet of Trump with the comment “The Tyrant Speaks”. Eleven months and 3000+ followers up in smoke, now I have 9.

Well, even leaving our Moron-in-Chief’s ignorant bullshit aside (always a good principle to follow) - I haven’t noticed gas prices being either noticeably higher or lower of late. Admittedly, I do fill up whenever possible in the low-price haven of the Scenic Berkshires in MA (lower than NY or CT, that is), but it didn’t seem unusually cheap or expensive last time I checked. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

Anyway, we had been toying with the idea of doing Thanksgiving up there at our rustic château - but the latest weather report (single-digit [plus] temps with 20+mph winds leading to single-digit [minus] windchills) led to to decide to stay in the City. We can watch the Macy’s Parade on TV and look for any balloons to escape and/or attack spectators in the wind….

Gas prices around here are dropping - 30 cents or so a gallon in the past two weeks. Not sure why as our prices are always near the highest in the state.

re: #117 Charles Johnson

Weak men end up hurting and killing folk because it’s the most primitive, stupid way of asserting power, requiring no special skills. They punch down because it’s the win…the basic assertion of power…that matters—not skill (they have none) strategy (they have little beyond mobbing single targets, picking on the weak, and disproportionate cruelty), not the cause itself.

Gavin is your basic mediocre but conscience-thin man that’s hungry for the license to hurt people with very little risk to be hurt in turn. The world’s full of them: lacking impulsivity to truly just break bad, but hungry and vigilant for the opportunity to lash out while claiming it’s somehow justified. Like the soccer hooligans of my childhood in England; it’s about creating a groupthink that permits cruelty and abuses. They’re joiners, if it gives them the chance to indulge a taste for power. They long for soft targets.

Both creating the Proud Boys and fleeing are reflections of that basic cowardice. It also means that given the opportunity, he’ll do it again. It’s the same thing we saw after Charlottesville—they run away when confronted, they cower and self-pity when called to stand for their actions…but the minute they feel safe they’ll start braying again, and eventually they’ll pump themselves back to the point that it repeats.
