Shop Amazon for Black Friday and Support LGF

Great Deals • Views: 48,458

It’s that crazy time again when all the retailers’ ledgers are supposed to go into the black, and they need you to consume in order to make that happen, so they make it easy for you to buy stuff by cutting prices to unusually low levels. Ain’t consumerism grand?

Be that as it may, we all need stuff, and right now Amazon has quite a lot of stuff on sale for good to great prices, at their Black Friday Deals Week. (This page even has a live video feed — a la Home Shopping Network — with perky Amazon people demonstrating the stuff.)

And since Little Green Footballs is an Amazon associate, if you click through from one of our links on this page we get a small percentage of the sale price at no extra cost to you.

So if you’re inclined to get some stuff, or just feeling consumerish, here are some more links that may pique your interest…

Amazon Device Deals (Fire Tablets, Kindles, Echo devices, TVs)
Clothes and Fashion
Video Games and Game Consoles
Electronics (TVs, computers, cell phones, audio gear, camera gear)
Home, Kitchen, Furniture, Tools, Cookware, etc.

By any measure Hillary Clinton has been one of the most successful and effective liberal women in the history of US politics. She’s also one of the most unfairly maligned, often by people who seemingly should know better.

Hard not to think this is a cause and effect type situation.

Remember how Dr. Ford’s testimony was consistent from the very beginning, and yet Kavanaugh’s defenders claimed that she had to be lying because her therapist’s notes and the media who’d reported on them had minor differences?

Compare that to the same crowd’s dogged insistence that Avenatti is guilty as the latest plot twist drops:

For those keeping score at home, since the initial TMZ reports, we’ve gone from “He beat her bloody! This guy is a monster!” to “He roughed her up by dragging her by the hair! He needs to be put away!” to now “She has a bruise! And a small rug burn! We gotta believe her!”

Again, I’m not passing judgment yet. But my skepticism is already pegged at 11.

re: #55 gocart mozart

There are even simpler examples of why this is bad (aside from all the whataboutism that would come from a person given in an example who was breaking the law but not caught).

Lights come on behind you, though you’re not doing anything wrong. You pull over, wait while the cop does whatever he does, then he comes up to give you a turkey (gift certificate, &c), presumably bought with tax money for that purpose.

In the meantime, though you weren’t breaking any traffic laws, the delay has now caused you to be late for (job interview, doctor’s appointment, Social Security office appointment, name a thing you have to do on time), and you lose that opportunity entirely (you don’t get the job, you have to reschedule the doctor, &c).

And anti-vaxxers will try to claim things such as polio were dying out anyway (thus vaccines are a red herring) or it’s not really bad not to get one (ignoring all those who died from smallpox or polio or influenza), or the really pro-life position of “vaccines cause autism” (untrue, and dead is so much more awesome than autism even if it was true).

Hey Amazon Prime members, don’t forget that if you pick the free no rush shipping option and check out / pay for each item individually you can rack up a bunch of $5 Prime Now credits. It’s like doing petty larceny to Jeff Bezos, only legal.

And what are those good for? The only thing I do with prime is shipping.

Woman goes on shocking racist rant at Phoenix restaurant: ‘I’d prefer the whole freaking nation be white’ (Raw Story)

They cite a Phoenix television station for the story, where the television station blurred the white woman’s face so you could not see who she was.

The video of the interaction was shared to Facebook.

The manager of the restaurant tossed the white woman from his establishment, and later walked the Puertorriqueña woman to her car so she would feel safe.

The restaurant seating was full, and the Puertorriqueña woman asked to sit next to the white woman.

Ok, just wondered. I know there are a boat load of things I could be doing with Prime but I watch almost no TV or movies anymore, I don’t care for audio books & most of my ebooks are non-fiction or RPG’s. The most exciting thing I’ve done recently was hack my Amazon Fire tablet to run Google Play so I can do all my ebooks on the same device.

Now if I could apply those credits towards getting the Raspberry Pi computer system I want to put together for hacking then I’d be all excited :D

It has dropped about 33 cents a gallon around here but that still leaves it at $3.64 for 15% ethanol and a $50 bill won’t fill my dad’s truck that I’m driving.

I haven’t bought gasoline in a couple weeks, but the last time here it was about $3.60 (for premium), meaning it’s going up slightly. Some of the local gas stations here are now starting to require pre-payment before pumping, though no one has done that to me (something something my car is really easy to identify around here).

Marcy Wheeler speculates that Jerome Corsi is trying to work the refs (the media) again to get Trump’s attention for a pardon.

She notes others who have tried this have not succeeded.

Is Jerome Corsi Trying to Get Trump to Intervene (Again)? (Goes to Emptywheel, more at the link):

Is it possible that whatever Corsi would tell investigators is more damning than what Mike Flynn and Paul Manafort have presumably already said? Recall that Roger Stone, in several of his many efforts to deflect any attention on his own actions, has suggested that Corsi had his own relationship with Trump (perhaps trying to suggest that if anything Corsi learned made its way to Trump, it would have been directly).

So why am I getting all these YouTube recommendations in Thai? A few months ago it was Romanian for a while….

Youtube recs are a weird, weird thing. I tend to get a lot of on-target stuff on top of my list - competitive gaming, endurance racing, EDM, chess and go - and then the bottom half is utter pop-culture and political crap that I would never click on and would scrub from the internet if I could.

Speaking of chess, the final two scheduled matches of the World Chess Championship are this weekend. The participants are an American and a Norwegian, both in their 20s. It’s been a bit of a slow burn with the first ten games all drawn, but the chess keeps getting more and more intense as they struggle to get that critical win before it goes to tiebreakers. For American viewers I recommend either of the main Twitch channels that are commentating it. ChessNetwork is a very calm, approachable discussion of what’s going on, while ChessBrah are a couple of young Canadian GMs who I feel are keeping up with the gameplay a little better but are more self-absorbed, edgy, and lightly commercialized. Games are in London, so they start 10AM Eastern.

edit: Sunday is yet another rest day. Phooey.

That’s going to be my weekend… unless work calls.

There’s still the 14 +/- who comprise the “#FiveWhiteGuys” band of witless wonders who haven’t backed out of saying they won’t vote for her. So assuming all of them decide to hold firm, she’s at 214. Thing is, I remain convinced that these morons are not ready to end their careers on the two words “Speaker McCarthy,” so I doubt they’ll hold to this refusal to back her past the caucus vote. It’s an audio interface, a Focusrite by the looks of it. It is used send audio from the laptop to external speakers, and can also be used to input audio, like from musical instruments or a microphone. It is not likely used by the midi controller, which usually connects directly to the laptop with a USB cable.

AOC has done a lot to defuse the initial skepticism and even opposition she received after winning the nomination and now her election. That said, there are an awful lot of conservative citizens who believe that the Bill of Rights (and other rights) only apply to citizens.

He could have been convinced (either by conservatives or by not knowing the law) he was not allowed to purchase a gun because he was a foreigner, so he lied on the form.

Fox News’ Rick Leventhal issued an on-air apology Thursday after a guest likened Hillary Clinton to “herpes.”

“She won’t go away. She’s like herpes,” said Anna Paulina, director of Hispanic engagement for right-wing organization Turning Points USA. (Charlie KIrk’s organisation, keeping it classy.)

Paulina’s comment came during a panel discussion on President Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s call for another probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state.

“OK, that’s news that we’re breaking here. Er, not appropriate,” Leventhal responded to Paulina’s dig. He had earlier said he was “amazed” Clinton’s emails were still headline news given “everything going on in the world.”

George Conway took to Twitter to refute Donald Trump’s misleading claim that the 9th Circuit Court is overturned much more frequently than other courts.

He notes the Supreme Court is more likely to take a case that has a potential to be overturned, and that the 9th has about the same rate as the others.

Donald Trump is only reiterating a claim that conservatives have made for decades, that the 9th Circuit Court is overrun by liberals and somehow an “activist court.” (More justices were in fact appointed by Democratic presidents to that court, but that doesn’t make it “liberal.”)

The court represents western states and Pacific territories. 20% of the nation’s population resides in the area covered by the 9th.

Of note, in the last term of the Supreme Court, the 6th Circuit Court (generally regarded as conservative) had four cases referred to the Supreme Court. All (100%) were reversed on review.

The 1st Circuit (most of New England plus Puerto Rico) had one case, which was overturned (100%).

I haven’t bought gasoline in a couple weeks, but the last time here it was about $3.60 (for premium), meaning it’s going up slightly. Some of the local gas stations here are now starting to require pre-payment before pumping, though no one has done that to me (something something my car is really easy to identify around here).

I just paid €1.53 per liter here in Germany, that works out to, lessee, 1€ = $1.13 x 3.785 liters/gallon = $6.54 per gallon. I believe Americans would go to war before paying such prices…

I somehow doubt they’d have the same argument if a student came to school and said religion was dumb, wore a Satanist T-shirt, or denigrated Trump somehow.

A school has a wide range of disciplinary actions against students: detention, mandatory study hall, suspension, dismissal, and others. If the administration wanted to use those kids as an example to minimize future embarrassing displays, they would. Probably some parent (or even some student) threatened a lawsuit if any of those boys were punished.

One of the things that bugs me about Game of Thrones: why don’t the white walkers just walk underwater around the end of the ice wall? It’s not like they have to breathe.

Or guns or ammunition.

I got to see a lecture by Max Brooks, writer of the Zombie Survival Guide. One of the questions he got was what one item would he want to have in case of a zombie apocalypse. His answer was a crowbar. It doesn’t need to be reloaded — and it’s really good for opening stuck doors.

Slain American Missionary left diary behind: “God, I don’t want to die.”

An American missionary who traveled to an off-limits remote tribe in the Bay of Bengal left behind a diary that detailed his desire to evangelize the people who killed him.

John Allen Chau, 26, was killed by arrows, police said this week, after traveling to the Andaman Islands in North Sentinel, an Indian territory. In a diary shared with The Washington Post by Chau’s mother, the adventurer from Washington state tells of how he “hollered” at the isolated tribe: “My name is John, I love you and Jesus loves you.” The entry also shares how a child shot at him with an arrow that pierced his waterproof Bible.

Indian government regulations forbid interaction with the Sentinelese, who are known to shoot arrows at outsiders. P.C. Joshi, an anthropology professor at Delhi University who has studied the islands, said the isolated tribe has little resistance to diseases and could die from contact with outsiders.

“You guys might think I’m crazy in all this, but I think it’s worthwhile to declare Jesus to these people,” he wrote in his last note to family, the Post reports. “God, I don’t want to die.”

Authorities have since arrested seven people accused of helping Chau reach the island. Chau paid the fisherman $325 to take him close to the island, and he then paddled to shore on a kayak with a Bible, gifts and food, according to officials.

“Why does this beautiful place have to have so much death here?” he wrote in a diary hours before his death. “I hope this isn’t one of my last notes but if it is ‘to God be the Glory.’ “

Yeah my mother is close to both of you in ages. Mom went to an integrated public school and sent my brothers and me to public as well and I grew up in one of the most diverse parts of Virginia. Had classmates, neighbors, teachers, and friends from all over. You know, I don’t get the CSA stuff at all. I guess I’m in a fairly unique position. I’m a Southerner in that I’m from Virginia but I’m from a part of Virginia that has mostly gotten over the war. You don’t see CSA monuments here but there are roads and schools that were named after CSA people though J.E.B Stuart recently did change its name. It’s a great thing the South lost the Civil War and the shame of it is I know that many Southerners don’t think so and I don’t get how you can consider yourself to love this country and feel that way. I get that you don’t want to hate great great great grandpa who fought for the CSA since Grandpa told you tales about how brave he was that he heard from his dad and grandpa but damn it, the cause was awful.

253
mmmirele  Nov 24, 2018 • 8:10:20am

I don’t know if this story got posted earlier in the week, but I’m re-upping it. My family moved to Houston from the San Francisco Bay Area in early 1973. I spent the first four torturous months at John Foster Dulles Junior High School in the Fort Bend Independent School District. Of course they didn’t tell us about the convict graveyard that later ended up on district property.

It was once known as the Hellhole on the Brazos — a notorious network of sugar cane plantations and prison camps where former slaves worked and died.

A tract near Houston, in what is now known as Sugar Land, became a graveyard for many of those people; it was unmarked, untouched and unconfirmed for decades.

It wasn’t until this year that the remains of 95 likely prisoners were unearthed in the old Hellhole on the Brazos, after the Fort Bend Independent School District had broken ground there for a new school.

On Monday, a judge ordered the school district to halt construction and ruled that the human remains should remain at the site pending an investigation, including DNA testing to identify them, according to NBC affiliate KPRC.

“This find is very different from any other,” Fort Bend County District Judge James Shoemake said, according to KPRC. “We have a history that’s different. I want some more effort. This is important stuff. Families and communities are affected by this. You came here for permission [to build]; I’m not going to give you permission.”

(I’d note that Judge Shoemake is white.)

I just wish Christians and really all people of religious faith would realize that not everyone shares your religious beliefs. That doesn’t make them bad people and you don’t need to “save” them. The people in those islands have lived the way they have for generations before Christianity was even conceived. Plus there’s also the disease element.

I don’t really hate religion so much as what religion does to people. I myself identify as agnostic but I don’t mind people believing in God or miracles if that helps them but where we have problems in society is when you decide your religious beliefs should be the law of the land over everyone including people who don’t share those values and when those values are frankly incompatible with civilized society. The religious right has never ever gotten that separation of church and state benefits church too.

The Last Redoubt.

Several of my high school friends from central Illinois have effectively joined this movement. As the ratio of white/black got closer to 50/50 at our alma mater they started to move to smaller farming communities within 10 miles of the city where new developments of McMansions went up; and of course at the same time small private Christian academies cropped up too in those same places.

They’ll tell you that it isn’t race—it’s just that the quality of the school went down and so…. The truth is they believe it and say they’d be happy if qualified black kids entered the newer schools.

I broke down and bought a Copperfit back support belt this summer. If Jerry Rice endorses it then what the hell. Has worked out great. Wore it for all 350 miles of holiday driving, and hiking yesterday in the Hoh rainforest and Ruby Beach (Olympic National Park). No problems so far that ibuprofen and some ganja couldn’t cure. Huzzah! I’ve had way too many bad back weeks since turning 50 in April. Enough of that. I just joined an aikido dojo (ouch). My dad’s had a bad back for decades and I don’t wanna go there.

I’ve had 2 prior surgeries L-4/S1 back in the mid 80’s. I’ve taken as much care as possible and considering that, and what some others go through, I’m blessed. But time has taken its toll and a recent MRI shows a hot mess in there with next higher disk starting to fail. And that area of the spine controls continence. I see a Neurosurgeon Monday on consult. If you want to be privately proud of the role that your great-great-grandpappy played in the Confederate insurrection, then go right ahead. I don’t know enough details about the case to judge it.

Really don’t have a dog in either though I’m probably a little more positively inclined towards OSU since they’ve produced quite a few Steelers, I have more family ties in Ohio than I do Michigan, and while I’m not fond of either coach, I like Meyer better than I do Harbaugh. That’s what that flag and a lot of the monuments were always about and you know what, the guys who dedicated them even admitted that at the time. The CSA revisionists amuse me because they insist the CSA wasn’t based on white supremacy when Alexander Stephens, a much more credible source as a CSA founding father than Billy Bob down the street admitted as such. I have no illusions. I doubt my second great grandfather who fought for the Union was a believer in racial equality or abolitionism, and even if he was, I know that he would be an exception. I think many Northerners like him were perhaps repulsed by slavery but they wanted to preserve the union and they were disgusted by the firing on Fort Sumter.

No doubt as we speak, the Right Wing Media is trying to find any dirt on this victim, like a missed child support payment, an old drug arrest charge, or DUI arrest, to justify his shooting death.

Most American police are racist. Until we confront that, the black bodies are going to keep piling up.

It doesn’t matter if he’s a security guard.

It doesn’t matter if he’s active duty military.

It doesn’t matter if he’s a firearms instructor.

It doesn’t matter if he’s an innocent bystander with a concealed carry.

It doesn’t matter if he’s someone’s son, father, brother or best friend.

All that matters is he’s black and he has a gun. Immediately he becomes expendable, regardless of circumstances or intent.

And even if charges do get brought, 9 times out 10 the justice system sides with the cop and he or she will walk.

There is a privilege system in America.

There is a racial class system in America.

There is unjust Justice System in America.

I am a 37 year old white male. I have lived in America for 10 years now. I’ve been pulled over by police exactly two times. If I were black, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t be alive right now to write this.

For a country that likes to label itself “The Land of the Free”, many of us have surprisingly few freedoms.

Even though Dory is taking considerable space over the plate, Rango has a distinct advantage of a long snout with pinpoint accuracy coming in from above.

As a UMich attendee, we naturally had a Ohio State fight song ripped off from their own-this is from the 1970’s….

“Liquidate Ohio State and humble Woody Hayes / They have a lot of cattle in Columbus, send them off to graze / Knock them off their Ivory Towers, send them crawling into the showers / Liquidate Ohio State it’s a no-nothing party school.”

Of course, there was the opposite…

FYI, y’all wanna read something that’s a good, quick read and definitely not like anything you’ve seen before, go looking for “Moses: The Chronicles of Harriet Tubman, Books 1 and 2” by Balogun Ojetade.

The first scene is Harriet Tubman going full-on ninja on a bunch of Confederate kidnappers, and it just gets wilder from there.

I was in a hipster coffee shop this morning surrounded by young Democrats taking a break from Black Friday shopping. A group of them next to me were whispering about how grateful they are that President Trump cut gas prices, giving them piles of extra cash to shop with

Gas prices have actually increased since 2016…

From a logical POV, that argument makes sense, but that doesn’t make it right or just.

Once again, it’s proved that America has the best healthcare system that money can buy (and, if you’re poor, you either can just go fuck off and die, preferably very quietly, or prostrate yourself to the charity of others to keep you alive).

A person not being able to afford predatory drug pricing only equals “can’t keep taking their meds” in this dystopian system of ours where people lazily use the same blame shifting terms to describe both the ability to pay and the willingness to follow a doctor’s instructions.
