A Gorgeous Acoustic Guitar Piece by Janet Noguera: “Favor From the Wind”

Music • Views: 35,459

YouTube

I started writing this piece after the two years of battle and resistance, when I received the news that my mother’s life was about to come to an end. In one of those moments of denial and despair, trying to accept it for myself, and overwhelmed by the responsibility of communication and strength, I run away with my guitar, and far away in a windy evening, I surrendered. I let her go in peace and in love.

Rest in peace my Young Warrior.

A court recently ruled shooting someone across the border was not a problem. That agent was cleared of wrongdoing.

Motherfuckers. The Right Wing are cheering on the Twitter feed, the tear gassing of migrant civilians, by the military. They’re actually calling for a Tiananmen-style massacre. Fuck these assholes!

Allegedly because a group of them tried to “storm” the border.

re: #19 Patricia Kayden

Why are they using teargas against migrants?

It’s a show of assholes.

Trump is trying to be a hard ass because he needs his base to keep shit stirred up. This gets everyone all debating what he is doing while he fights for political life every day.

And that is how I think it has to be seen. Trump lives day by day, every day he looks for the ratings of what he did. If he gets love from some one (anyone) he is happy.

It lessens the specter of Mueller, cause congress to mess about allowing the Attorney General problems to linger.

And if he doesn’t see things going his way, he tosses a wrench in something to cause eyes to look elsewhere. Every single day, sometimes multiple times a day he kicks up some crazy policy, response, whatever is needed.

I have to believe this is exactly how Trump did business. What has he been saying about chaos? Well, here it is in practice.

And it is not going to stop until congress stands up to him, he resigns, is impeached or his term ends.

He needs his ass kicked before he really fucks up.

In view of the increased and all but official Russian support for the asinine claim that the Moon landings were faked, I call upon all space scientists, planners, historians, and engineers in the Russian Federation to go immediately to the nearest EU, Japanese, or other pro-science diplomatic establishment and request political asylum. In asserting that you have been so easily hoaxed for 50 years, Putin’s conspiracy/propaganda operation has utterly degraded you and your achievements, and proven that he has more regard for American hucksters and snake-oil peddlers than he does for you.

Asshole.
Baylor Kicker Refuses To Leave Field During Halftime

We almost got through the entire season without any band/kicker incidents this season. It was nearly a miracle.

And then the kicker of the Baylor Bears decided to ruin it for everyone!

While performing at halftime today, the Texas Tech Goin Band found themselves with an unexpected visitor on the field. The kicker for Baylor came out of the locker room early as we’ve seen many times before and instead of waiting another 90 seconds for the band to finish their show he walked out into the band’s formation and started kicking field goals. Even worse, he was told by a Texas Tech Goin Band Assistant not once, but twice to wait until the band was done.

I’m getting sick and tired of the “well, it’s Mississippi” type arguments. Like legitimately annoyed with the idea that we should simply be okay with a sizable portion of our population still believing that the cause of the confederacy was anything other than maintaining the racist structure of slavery. Anyone sympathetic to the lost cause has no place in decent society, period, end of discussion. And if they want to pretend otherwise, we need to continually remind them that the Civil War was not a war of northern aggression, it was a War of Southern Treason.

I disagree, The Orange Anus even minimally floating the idea of Ukraine joining NATO* would probably prod Putin to send every available military resource on the road to Kyiv ASAP, and de-facto re-annex the country to Russia before anyone could stop him (what’s Russian for fait accompli?). AFAICT, the Russian attitude towards an independent Ukraine is rather like ours might be if, in response to serious unrest in the US, the EU and UN had agitated to revive the Republic of Texas, and set it up as an “independent nation” on our borders - and made sure it was a state founded on anti-American agitation.**

*Unlikely, since who would pay for it?
** Imperfect analogy, but Russian “attachments” to Ukraine are ancient and intense (if mainly negative).

Cats gone missing, we ask in concern…?

Yeah. Outdoor Cat has not been seen in the neighborhood since just before we left. One of the downstairs cats, Basement Cat, was nowhere to be found in the house when we returned from vacation. Usually they stay in the basement (hence part of the name); if she was there, she isn’t anymore. If she escaped, she probably got eated by some wild animal, as she was de-clawed and thoroughly domesticated.

What “rules” do we have for asylum right now, asshole? Oh, that’s right: Trump doesn’t want ANY of them taking refuge here. Therefore, there are no rules. It therefore follows that they are justified in saying “go fuck all y’all” to anyone and anything that stands between them and protection against whatever hell they’re fleeing from.

I’m wondering if this action was taken today because Mexico is in a state of flux. Enrique Peña Nieto, the current president, leaves office on Saturday. It’s obvious to me, a non-white person. The same with Jewish refugees from Europe. The same with Latinx refugees and Middle Eastern refugees now.

‘Why’ counts:

Asylum has two basic requirements. First, an asylum applicant must establish that he or she fears persecution in their home country.[4] Second, the applicant must prove that he or she would be persecuted on account of one of five protected grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or particular social group

This is from the 10th but I realized I had failed to post it here. Tarrant County (Fort Worth) is right next door. They are actually trying to remove a respected surgeon from his party post because he is a Muslim and, according to them, all Muslims are terrorists. That is not a strawman or a virtual description or a claim of equivalence. It is openly, baldly the stated reason. The ringleader of the Islamophobes is one Dorrie O’Brien.
‘This is not all of us.’ Call to remove Muslim from post divides Tarrant Republicans

At a time when many want to focus on the 2020 election, in the wake of this reliably red county turning blue in this year’s U.S. Senate race, Tarrant Republicans instead are focused on a call to remove a Muslim from party leadership.

One side, described as a small group with a loud voice, wants to remove Shahid Shafi, a Muslim, from the post of vice chairman. They say it’s not about religion but whether Shafi is loyal to Islam or connected “to Islamic terror groups.”

The other side supports Shafi, a surgeon and Southlake City Council member. At least one member is ready to step down if the effort to remove him from office is successful.

“This small despicable group is whipping up a frenzy. That’s where this gets dangerous,” said Kelly Canon of Arlington. “They are doing this guilt by association crap and it goes against everything I go by. You have to judge a person by their deeds, not their religion.

Note how clueless these ignorant bigots are about the whipping they took in the election.

After you mix it up, put it in a five quart ice creme bucket and put it in your freezer for a day. Then serve it up as a slushy. Warrants a better grade of vodka if you do this, though.

Speaking of hooch, I have seen the glowing endorsements from various Lizard drunks experts and have decided to order some of this Famous Grouse stuff and give it a try. I’ll post my own impressions as soon as I’ve imbibed a statistically adequate sample, assuming I can still type by then.

Good luck!

He should be ashamed of how he and his fellow CNN folks repeatedly pumped up Trump in 2016.

And then, assuming the “regular ”stuff meets with your approval, try to find a bottle of The Grouse’s premium brand, The Black Grouse. Note: that’s its name, they also make a “smoky peat” blend with a black label, but it’s not the same. Cheers!

Cranberry and vodka is one of my favorite ways to do liver damage. Right up there with (rum or bourbon) + Coke.

Back in the ancient days when I drank, my preferred poison was bourbon and root beer.

The Trumpsters I know would all approve of this. They really don’t care about anyone who isn’t part of their immediate ethnic group; it was wrong when it was their group that faced hostility — but they lack compassion for other groups. It’s the old story: it’s only when a conservative has a loved one who faces discrimination or hostility that they finally develop empathy, but not a general empathy, only one limited to that particular issue that affected their family.

Max, uh Boot,

The GOP is now the party of neo-Confederates

The far left and far right have long been warning about neocons taking over the Republican Party. Turns out they are right. Only the “neocons” in question aren’t the neoconservatives — a small group of intellectuals, in whose ranks I have often been included, who have espoused a values-based foreign policy and a centrist domestic policy. Many of us have left the GOP in disgust over the rise of Trumpism. The neocons who are now in the ascendancy are the neo-Confederates who have been encouraged to come into the open by President Trump’s unabashed appeals to racist and xenophobic prejudices.

A defining moment in the Trump presidency was the violent rally by tiki-torch-carrying white supremacists in August 2017 to protest plans to take down a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville. Three people died, but rather than condemn far-right terrorism, Trump said there were “very fine people on both sides,” and he actually sided with the white nationalists in their desire to keep intact the “beautiful statues and monuments” honoring the Confederacy.

Max Boot certainly has been a vociferous never Trumper. I believe he briefly had hopes that Trump would not govern as he campaigned, but that hope did not last long. However, I don’t believe he is one who understands that Trump was the logical heir to the decades of Republican malfeasance starting with Nixon’s courting of the South and his interference in Johnson’s peace attempt in Vietnam.

Too bad I can’t watch it, even though I tried out for it. With a ringing endorsement like this from the National Review, it looks like I’m really missing something here.

This entire project turns patriotic nostalgia into decadence. It’s an Ocasio-Cortez concept: to denounce the American past while getting freakish, googly-eyed enjoyment out of it. (Okay, it’s also Tarantino-esque.) As smarty-pants Boomers, the Coens cannot resist self-reflexive commentary on film genres. What once launched their surprisingly ambivalent yet insightful winning streak — from The Hudsucker Proxy’s nostalgic mockery to the superb multicultural empathy of The Ladykilllers on to their ambiguous remake of True Grit — has now warped into grim skepticism. These Minnesota natives seem to have taken Bob Dylan’s literature-heavy Nobel address as a prod to disavow their American movie heritage.

Well, the one that immediately springs to mind for me is “Spiderland” by Slint from 1991, but they weren’t a “famous group” by any means, although the album went on to become quite influential.

nobody ever has to press 1 for English in this country. “Para espagnol” is always the sub-category. Why people continually bitch about having to do something that they’ve never had to do is beyond me.

They resent the idea that many people in the USA are more comfortable speaking Spanish than English, and retailers (among others) are catering to them by, you know, being helpful and stuff.

One member of my family was under the impression that soon everyone in the USA was going to have to learn Spanish, because reasons, and that was a bridge too far for him. I just shook my head. We speak English here except we’ve always had people who speak other languages. Hell I have one ancestor who only spoke Irish. She was in her 30’s when she arrived fleeing the famine and hunger and spent nearly her entire life in the US in Irish enclaves. There might be something bigger going on, but it’s probably just trying to stoke his popularity by drumming up fear over this issue. The conclusion from the election was basically that this type of fear mongering worked to get his base to the polls, they just needed to start the fear mongering earlier.

A Cranky One  Nov 26, 2018 • 7:01:23am

Just got back from a visit to Nashville. While there, checked out The GIG at Belmont, a collection of iconic guitars.

Partial view of the gallery

A little info on the collection:

Following Steven Kern Shaw’s death, his will specified his desire that his prized instruments be donated to an institution capable of properly exhibiting and caring for the collection, preferably in the Nashville area that had become his home. He also felt strongly that “these instruments are to be played and heard,” not just collect dust in a display. Thanks to the input of family friend, co-executor of his estate and vintage guitar expert George Gruhn, the Shaw Collection of nearly 500 unique and irreplaceable instruments came to Belmont University and established the foundation of The Gallery of Iconic Guitars at Belmont. Now, beyond just conveying the important history and design of these instruments this museum will bring new life and music to these unique, irreplaceable guitars and mandolins rather than merely displaying them behind glass.

The best part? They have several instruments that visitors can play (you can see them on the floor stands). Got to play an old Martin. The tone was just amazing.

The worst part? I couldn’t stop drooling. ;-)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re about to get another soaking rainstorm here, but that’s the least of the concerns here.

We’ve got Trump kowtowing and bending the knee to Putin over Russia’s latest hostilities against Ukraine all while attacking our NATO and EU allies/partners AGAIN. It’s like clockwork. You can set your watch to it. Trump goes out and attacks our NATO/EU partners and allies just as Russia ramps up actions against our European allies’ interests.

Ukraine continues to suffer for it - and Trump continues doing Putin’s bidding.

None of this appears to matter to the GOP, which pretty much ignores that Trump’s totally subsuming American foreign policy to that of Putin’s needs. We are losing our standing and stature internationally because Trump’s pushing a policy that always inures benefits not to the US, but Russia (and China to a lesser extent). It would seem that Trump’s policies always seem to bend to those countries/leaders who seem to have financial sway over Trump’s business interests internationally.

None of this should be surprising either, since we knew during the campaign that Trump was leveraged to the hilt and would be compromised even then.

And now we’re watching as another Trumpworld figure, Jerome Corsi is on Mueller’s hit list. Corsi seems to think that he can do better by not taking a plea deal. Yeah, he’ll learn the same lesson Manafort learned, when Manafort was convicted on charges that would put him behind bars for the rest of his life.

Meanwhile, GM announced major layoffs and factory shutdowns. These factories are primarily producing vehicles for sale overseas.

In other words, this is a direct consequence of Trump’s idiotic trade war. Companies are doing what they think will protect them from losses incurred due to Trump’s idiotic foreign/trade policies.

So, is this a case of chicken and the egg? Do automakers sense a recession coming so they’re cutting production, or is it potential auto buyers sensing a recession, so they’ve put off buying a new car?

The factory closures are coming with factories that are producing vehicles for production overseas. In other words, it’s a consequence of the trade war, and that vehicles aren’t selling due to the tariffs being slapped on in retaliation by other countries for what Trump is doing.

Trump’s screwing the very people he conned into thinking he’d be helping.

Suckers bet. And lost.

So……….Mueller is meant to be filing an update in the Manafort case today.

Lawyers in the case were supposed to submit a status report Friday but asked U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington for an extension until Nov. 26. They didn’t explain why, saying in a brief filing on Thursday that they will then submit “a report that will be of greater assistance in the court’s management of this matter.”

Nothing else in the two-paragraph document indicates what, if anything, may be happening in the next 10 days.

I’m finding it hard to concentrate on my work while I’m also refreshing news sites every few minutes.

Or is it simply that the price of steel going through the roof means prices are about to spike and that will drastically decrease demand for American cars? That’s where the lead into the recession will begin and then be reinforced by rotting soybeans.

two stories caught my eye this AM

Right wing violence on the rise - WAPO via Politicalwire.com

- what we’ve known and been saying all along the wapo has finally figured out
- i dont know how long it took to them to research and write - not long enough to say “we always knew it too, just took all this time to nail it down”

still, they are giving it voice

“Over the past decade, attackers motivated by right-wing political ideologies have committed dozens of shootings, bombings and other acts of violence, far more than any other category of domestic extremist,” according to a Washington Post analysis of data on global terrorism.

“While the data show a decades-long drop-off in violence by left-wing groups, violence by white supremacists and other far-right attackers has been on the rise since Barack Obama’s presidency — and has surged since President Trump took office.”

Sycophants in the White House (borntorunthenumbers.com)

remember the ‘guardrail’ guys:

Mattis, McGahn, Kelly, Sessions… you all seem to think that it was so damn important that you were there in the room where it happens, so you could protect all of us from him.

Is it possible that all you really accomplished was preventing so many Americans from seeing just how terrible a President this man really will be when none of you are around to muzzle him?

In failing to speak the truth while they had the platform and credibility to do so, these “human guardrails” look to all the world like people who support Trump 100%. Therefore the entire alleged premise of their view of their own service is shattered and achieving the exact opposite of their intent. Beware, indeed, of the law of unintended consequences.

Trump toadys are fond of claiming that this is okay, a few are even trying to point out that under Obama, CBP used tear gas to disrupt a group moving on the border in 2016.

Instead of making it easier to enter and seek asylum, this administration wants to shut the border to nonwhites. This is what white nationalism looks like in practice.

Farm bankruptcies are on the rise, and bankers worry that far more are on the way (startribune)

Eighty-four farms filed for Chapter 12 bankruptcy in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana in the 12 months that ended in June, according to a new analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. That’s more than double the number over the same period in 2013 and 2014, and the number of bankruptcies in Minnesota doubled over the past four years from eight to 20.

Banks are also seeing more farm borrowers fall behind on their payments, and the worst is likely yet to come.

It was mainstream for conservatives then. It’s been mainstream for conservatives for a long time.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal did a good historical article on this a few months ago.

commercialappeal.com

Plenty of conservative politicians have run on anti-immigrant platforms (or keeping Americans in America). This is really nothing new. (Conservatives don’t do “new.”)

I’m talking about strictly the Presidency. I very much disagree with you that Bush and Reagan were anti-immigrant. They sucked but not for that erason. OF course, it’s not new especially among the base. As I got at, those people in so aclled flyover country have always been xenophobic but what’s different now is having an ally in the CinC.

Lordstown…Warren Ohio.

Are all the Trump supporters in the Mahoning Valley (Youngstown, Warren, Boardman) that bought his Make America Great Again and promises of those jobs coming back still Trump supporters with this news?

Not only are there not new factories being built, it sounds like another will be shuttered.

Better get the New York Times on it. We need to hear those poor downtrodden Trump voters…again.

Those workers can just get jobs in all those new steel mills being re-opened and built tRump told us about.

The problem with these NYT articles is they never challenge the people in these small towns and diners on their conceptions. They don’t point out that Trump did plenty of outsourcing himself as a businessman. They don’t point out that the mines were on their decline years ago when my grandfather was a young man. No, they instead let these people live in fantasyland where liberalism is resposible for why they lost their jobs and why it’s perfectly okay to act like their mythological past actually existed.

True, Ronald Reagan also employed the “Make America Great Again” line but used it to speak favourably of immigrants. After his Immigration Control Act granting amnesty, conservatives never made that mistake again.

I’m so white I’d be lost in a snow storm - 92% Great Britain (includes Western Germany and northern France) and 7% Ireland/Scotland/Wales. This journey to find my ancestors has opened my eyes to conflicts related to pride in my exclusively Southern heritage. We are a people who deeply value extended family. Asking who your people are is as natural as breathing. It has served us well as a support function, but I think it has hurt us as we are willing to ‘other’ people too easily. The first time I read a will from one of my 2x great grandfathers, leaving human beings to his children as property, it felt like a punch in the gut and I cried.

But what’s also disappointing is you do have some people on the left who are fine with obliging that message. When you have Sanders saying flat out that it’s not bigotry if people are uncomfortable with voting for a candidate of color. You’re hurting our message which is that this country is about that any man, woman having an opportunity regardless of our origin or how long our family’s been here or even how we got here. Undocumented immigration is a misdemeanor. Would you want your life ruined over a speeding ticket? But because we have so many people who choose to be uninformed about immigration, we get people who think it’s legitimate to shoot tear gas at asylum seekers who btw must be in our borders to seek asylum. Teh Trump Administration may not like that rule but it is statutory law.

meanwhile as food is fungible, and i think noted here the other day,
- some soybeans are rotting
- others are being sold to south america for less than we used to sell to china (winning)
- while in south america, they are now selling their own soybeans to….china
- and gearing up because they think this switch will be either permanent or long term at least

To me, Trump is the cumulation of years of more subtle race baiting by people who many of the Never Trumpers not only don’t see as culpable but admirable. I’d love to see more of these types critically look at Reagan’s role in stirring up bigotry in the GOP base and look at how people like President Ford lost a lot of their influence in the GOP because they didn’t play that game. Ford’s most honorable moment as POTUS was welcoming fleeing refugees from Vietnam. Ford by far not only is the best GOP PResident since Ike but the best man they had too in both Presidency and practice.

Reagan’s whole “welfare queen” and “gangster” view of anything darker than the hue of eggshell white began the current environment of racism (which itself was a transformation of the open bigotry of the white south\Nixon’s southern strategy).

Right. And what the Never Trumpers refuse to see is that Trump isn’t a bertrayal of Reaganism, he’s an extension of its ugliness. They just refuse to see it since they’ve bought the Reagan cult of personality that Ronnie wo the Cold War etc. I’ll give Reagan that he could give a better speech than Trupm could but to many people in this country myself included, he was just a more well spoken Trump and so many conservatives refuse to see it because to see it because Reagan got them many personal or political succesess.

471
HappyWarrior  Nov 26, 2018 • 10:00:00am

And since we are talking about Reagan. A lot of the problems in Latin and South America go back to his administration not knowing or caring about the people in those nations. They embraced anyone who paid the party line on anti-communist rhetoric while not bein necessarily anti-authoritarian. That’s why Reagan shouldn’t get the credit he gets for “destructing communism.” He made things like Chavezism more appealing to people through his sutpid actions in that region.

472
HappyWarrior  Nov 26, 2018 • 10:02:46am

Yep. The big difference between Mussolini fascism and Nazism was that Mussolini fascism was primarily about the power of the state whereas Nazism was more racial. That’s not to say Mussolini wasn’t racist just that it wasn’t his primary goal. Just like Franco in Spain was more into protecting the church than the other two. Fortunately, I think most Jews, LGBT people, and others see Trumpism for what it is. Saw plenty of polls that indictated that not only did Jews vote against the Republicans in large numbers in the midterms, they voted among the most overwhelmingly of religious and non-religious groups studied.

And Trump and the white nationalists running/excusing the GOP policy/agenda continue lying that the GOP is a big tent for minorities. Turns out that minorities can see clearly what Trump and the GOP stand for.

The ones who can’t/wont? The media for starters. They are too busy magic balance fairy-ing the GOP. Then there’s Trump and GOP itself, who think all this is fine, as they seek to impose a white nationalist xenophobic immigration policy all while the nation’s agribusinesses and restaurants and service industry relies on minorities and immigrants to take up various jobs that most Americans wont do (picking crops, washing dishes, busing tables, etc.) but without whom, those industries would suffer immensely as costs climb and productivity and food availability is reduced.

Corsi’s stupid enough to think he can beat those odds.

Corsi’s betting on a Trump pardon, just like Manafort, Flynn, Gates, Stone, and the rest of these criminals.

I started watching her speech. When she got to the part questioning why minorities stay with the “Democrat party” my eyes rolled so hard I got eye strain. I stopped watching after that.

She’s a right wing hack who will never get why PoC don’t want anythng to do with her shitty party. She also was silent when Trump bashed the policy that allowed her to become a citizen so easily. Her, Rubio, and Cruz disgust me because tehy rail against liberalism even though liberalism is why they are Americans especially that shithead Cruz whose father benefited from a very liberal immigration policy for Cubans.

Just wondering if Candace Owens’ take on Blacks and liberal/progressive using them has caught on with an actual politician.

The bit I saw was Mia Love wondering about the costs of minorities supporting Trump and the GOP, but she quickly pivoted to the “Democrat party keeps minorities down!” bullshit and I lost interest after that.

What will the demographics of the GOP House and Senate look like in 2019? 99% White males and 98% White males, respectively?

re: #567 makeitstop

Mueller would not charge Corsi with false statements if all he had was that Corsi originally said he did not remember a communication and then said he did remember after being shown an email reflecting. This is Corsi spin — Mueller has more than that.

In the practice of law, there is something called “refreshed recollection”, it goes something like this:

Q: Do you remember where you were on January 14, 2016?
A: No, I don’t
Q: I have here an email that you sent dated January 10, 2016 to [another witness], please take a look at this email.
A: Ok. [read email]
Q: We are going to mark this as Exhibit 4. Reviewing this email, does it appear to be an email from you?
A: Yes, it appears to be.
Q: Ok, and in this email, you state that you will be arriving in Seattle on January 14, 2016.
A: Yes it does
Q: So, does this refresh your recollection as to where you were on January 14, 2016?
A: Yes.
Q: And where were you on that date?
A: I traveled to Seattle…

Also, this is why there’s no such thing as a perjury trap. Because there are ways to address “I don’t remember” answers.
