Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers: Boygenius: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Nov. 16, 2018 | Bob Boilen — The group is new, but all of the members of boygenius — Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers — are Tiny Desk Concert alumae. In fact, Julien has been behind my desk twice before. So when the usual nerve-racking session was over and I shouted out, “So, is it any easier the second or third time?” I had to laugh when I got a resounding “No!” from all of them. The notion of playing in broad daylight, in an office, without having your voice coming out of a PA and with an audience close enough to touch is not only intensely intimate but also intimidating. That’s not only true to these three, newly collaborating, under-25-year-olds. It was also true of, say, Ralph Stanley (who was older than their ages combined) when he sang a cappella behind my desk.

But what came through as these three heartfelt singers performed was the strength of their songs. My first attraction to each of them as artists was the songwriting. In fact, the title track to Julien Baker’s first album, Sprained Ankle, is what got me to a show of hers early in 2016, which introduced me to the opening act, Lucy Dacus. (You can hear them tell their tale on an upcoming All Songs Considered.) Boygenius only has six total tunes, all from their just-released, self-titled EP, and here they perform half of that catalog. What you get at the Tiny Desk is a frailer version of these more fleshed-out songs from a band that is likely quite temporary.

For their closing tune at the Tiny Desk, “Ketchum, ID,” Julien, Phoebe and Lucy each take a verse. Lucy’s verse ends the song with the line, “Let’s dissolve the band, move to Idaho.” And the chorus to the song, in stunning harmony, echoes the mileage of the lifestyle, how they live and how they met: “I am never anywhere / Anywhere I go / When I’m home I’m never there / Long enough to know.”

This trio is a special gift to us all in 2018.

I want someone to tear gas him and see how he fucking feels about tear gas after that. (Not really) but I do feel like quoting Lincoln here who said “”Whenever I hear any one arguing for slavery I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.”

You do have to establish residency for a time. And I didn’t know he was born in New York. Hmmm what was Trump doing in September 1963. // I am kidding but he does look like a Trump, Wiki has a photo of Boris’s dad whom he does resemble.

She was the named plaintiff in a church-state case out of Pensacola and she and her family were being harassed by the locals, so she picked up and moved to Toronto. It’s looking like she’s going to be deported later this week, but the Canadian government may give them a month to get their affairs in order. Canada is really cracking down on American asylum. re: #335 HappyWarrior

The problem with Reagan is the image of the kindly grandfather who ended communism. I will grant real Reagan was better and more practical than the conservative myth but I dislike more about the man than I like. I try to understand people in the context of their times and I guess that’s why I have a hard time overlooking the race baiting and piss poor response to aids. I also find him patronizing especially to his opposition.

Yup. While ignoring his launching his presidential campaign on the site of Civil Rights workers who had only been slain in that place seven years before. Eliminating open carry in California after African-Americans started doing it. Laying a wreath at the cemetery of fallen SS soldiers in West Germany.

Saying it was a travesty that low-ranked military personnel could qualify for food stamps, then pushing to ban military personnel from getting food stamps. Saying that the military and civilian Federal workers needed to take the lead on showing citizens we cared about the budget deficit by freezing pay rises.

But somehow those of us who saw all this during his presidency are supposed to swallow “The GOP changed and I didn’t.”

With respect to Iraq, if he were alive today, Saddam Hussein would be 81 - more likely, he’d probably be dead or close to death by now. The post-Saddam order in Iraq was always going to be bad - Uday and Qusay probably would have ended up fighting each other for power, there would have been a Kurdish independence movement (again), and probably a Shite uprising.

That’s not to defend the Iraq War, it was based on lies/misinformation, and the post war plan was complete shit. But I believe we (and most of the regional powers) would have been pulled into a war in Iraq sometime in the last decade and a half.

I don’t know if it could ever have ended well BUT if Bush had put experts into Iraq, instead of GOP loyalists and anti-abortion fanatics, we may have had a fighting chance in winning the peace after the original fighting. Bear in mind that there would have been other events that would have weighed upon Saddam’s rule even if he hadn’t been deposed in ‘03. We may have tried to restore ties (however tenuous) with him in order to again serve as a counter-balance to Iran due to fighting in Afghanistan Iranian saber-rattling. And even if it wasn’t us, there would have been pressure to ease or end the various post-GW embargoes in place so to allow the Iraqi military to (at the very least) acquire sufficient spare parts and replacement kits to bring their remaining military up to snuff. Certainly it would have meant less of a chance that groups like ISIS would spring up, but it would also mean that the country would face a lot of instability when the Arab Spring struck the region.

They apparently can afford to be quislings, because I’m sure they figure they’ve got the money to blow this pop stand if they’re in danger. Of course, that’s all fine and dandy if you see it coming, but not when you get dragged from your bed in the middle of the night or get cornered by a mob out on the street with no exit.

Come to think of it, “fuck everyone else, I’ve got mine” works for them too…that’s something they definitely have in common with Trumpers.

They may very well end up leaving the country after Trump’s fall from grace, as it seems in their rush to be his new best buds that they’re pissing off all their old friends. And once he’s gone, they’ll find that the Faux crowd will suddenly have little time for them. And the Trumps will suddenly lose their phone numbers, as I’m sure all their former Dem friends already have.

CNN is catching up to what several YouTubers already know. You can build an iPhone from parts by shopping in that mall, hack your existing iPhone for more RAM, and replace the battery. If you’re an electronics hobbyist, these “digital malls” are like a ginormous toy store — tools, parts, test equipment, fasteners — the list goes on.

Now the sellers in Huaqianbei are selling used Bitcoin (etc.) mining equipment dirt-cheap, because it’s no longer profitable to mine cryptocurrencies with older, slower equipment, even in China.

Stating that “The best social program is a job” while cutting funding for job-training programs.

Pandering to Fundamentalist Christians while his wife was consulting her house astrologer to plan his daily schedule

And I would like to have been aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan when it moored in Japan to provide aid after the Fukushima catastrophe as the captain presented his credentials saying “We’re from the US government and we’re here to help you!”

So first they close the border to build up pressure. Then they await the moment that the pressure can be presented as some sort of “threat to our security”.

They know what they can get away with and did an highly efficient job of taking full advantage of what we have come to allow and accept.

It’s not really a “McMansion”, more like an overgrown country estate. There are lots of properties in this county like that, made by people with more money than artistic taste.

And that house is far, far from the most outlandish. As outlandish displays of wealth go, that particular property actually has parts of it done in relatively good taste.

My old pal insomnia has come to pay a visit and fuck up my Tuesday. Lucky for me that I’ve got a light work load tomorrow.

I’ve been reading legal blogs and Twitter feeds about the ramifications of Mueller pulling Manafort’s plea deal for the past two hours, and there’s a lot of heavy speculation that Mueller knew all along that he was being lied to and let Manafort think he was getting away with it, and a particular point of interest is that the deal was not pulled until after Trump had submitted his written answers.

I’m kinda giddy at the thought of Manafort feeding Trump information that would implicate Trump in an obstruction rap, and all with Mueller’s full knowledge. It would be the maraschino cherry of stupid on top of the stupid sundae these clowns have been mixing up for two years.

re: #60 Targetpractice

It seems somebody among the NYT editors decided that “Look at how many Trump supporters we can find in Appalachia” stories weren’t working anymore and chose to challenge themselves to finding “liberal” Trump supporters. And they succeeded by…finding the sort of people you find when lots of money is involved:

[Embedded content]

tl;dr, the Gray Lady hunted down a couple of star fuckers and social climbers who think money protects them from the sort of people that Trump’s political career is built upon. Why? Because they once tried to glom onto Hillary and a staffer stopped them, so they made a decision on Election Night ‘16 that they wanted to be with “winners” and jumped on the Trump bandwagon.

One of the reasons the polls have been so very wrong this time around. People like this are counted as trump supporters and the count is extrapolated to return rubbish.

Jeff Sessions is being floated in Alabama as a person to run against Doug Jones to win back his old Senate seat. Some pundits think if Sessions ran for it, the state would turn into a GOP free-for-all in the primary.

politico.com

Though Sessions would be the clear front-runner if he runs, his frayed ties with Trump could create an opening for other Republicans to make a play for the seat — and cause a messy primary similar to the one that cost the party the seat last year, several Alabama Republicans tracking the situation said.

POLITICO interviewed more than a dozen GOP operatives and potential candidates in the state about the prospect of a Sessions comeback bid and the forecast for the Senate race against Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.). They agreed that Sessions remains overwhelmingly popular in his home state after representing it for nearly two decades in the Senate.

But the Republicans were split on whether the 71-year-old Sessions would take the plunge, and whether he would clear the GOP field if he did. The belief, at least among some Republicans in the state, that Sessions might not be a gimme for the seat shows just how tumultuous the past three years have been for the Alabama political icon: From coming out as Trump’s earliest and most prominent campaign supporter, to being tapped as the nation’s most powerful law enforcement official, and now, potentially, to a difficult campaign for his old seat.

I haven’t time to jump down that particular rabbit hole, but your summary makes sense. Manafort and Trump have either contradicted each other, or they both have contradicted what Mueller already knows independently of either of those two geniuses. We all know Trump’s grasp of reality is the truth at best, and Manafort’s not any better, so they both could have walked right into several perjury traps just by being themselves.

House Republicans unveil giant tax package (Politico, more at the link, we knew they were going to do it, but still):

House Republicans on Monday evening unexpectedly released a 297-page tax bill they hope to move during the lame-duck session of Congress.

The legislation would revive a number of expired tax provisions known as “extenders,” address glitches in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and make a range of changes to savings- and retirement-related tax provisions.

Other parts of the bill would revamp the IRS, provide new tax breaks for start-up businesses and offer assistance to disaster victims.

and

The bill’s unveiling came only hours after Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), the ranking Democrat on the Finance Committee, complained the House GOP had provided little inkling of what exactly they want to do on taxes in the lame duck. His spokesperson later gave the measure a frosty reception.

“The first time Finance Committee Dems saw Brady’s legislation was in his press release,” Wyden spokeswoman Rachel McCleery tweeted Monday evening. “There was no communication from his staff, including a heads up that something was coming. That is not how you negotiate.”

Mueller Just Guaranteed He Can Issue a Public Report (goes to emptywheel, more at the link):

Back when Paul Manafort first entered a plea agreement, I argued the effects of it could not be pardoned away.

Here’s why this deal is pardon proof:

Mueller spent the hour and a half delay in arraignment doing … something. It’s possible Manafort even presented the key parts of testimony Mueller needs from him to the grand jury this morning.
The forfeiture in this plea is both criminal and civil, meaning DOJ will be able to get Manafort’s $46 million even with a pardon.
Some of the dismissed charges are financial ones that can be charged in various states.

Since that time, Mueller has been busy finishing up the Roger Stone indictment, Trump has finally finished his open book test, and any owners of the property Manafort had to forfeit under the plea deal had their 30-day window to challenge the forfeiture (only the bank owning the loan on his Trump Tower condo is known to have contested the forfeiture, which means the government may already be irretrievably seizing $43 million of Manafort’s property).

Which brings us to the status report that Mueller’s team delayed long enough to get that open book test.

I would add that Trump’s policies on trade really aren’t that different from what Bernie would have wanted to do. I really hope he doesn’t run and if he does run, someone pounces on the fact that Steve King once praised his record on immigration and he’s quite ineffective as well for someone who likely if he runs will be the second longest Congress tenured person and certainly will if Biden runs. Sanders being nominated would just about guarantee the Republican wins, unless Kasich’s third party run steals votes from the GOP. Sanders has no appeal outside of the young, urban, white, leftie demographic. He would be the McGovern of the 21st century.

I think it would be a little closer but in any other time Bernie would be landslided. It just astounds me how I know Sanders supporters out there who are smart enough to see that not everything is economics in contrast to Bernie himself but who really think nominating a guy who will be fucking 80 in three years is a great idea and that’s not getting into his other flaws too. They love going over hypothetical polls that have Bernie ahead. The Republican opps machine hasn’t gone after Bernie yet. Hell the Clinton campaign went pretty easy on him in a way that I wouldn’t have. I would have gone after Bernie from the left to show his young supporters that he’s not the man he tells them he is. We need someone that actually understands race is a real issue in this country and not just a “distraction” and certainly not someone who excuses white people not voting for PoC as not being racist when that’s the definition of racist. I really hope Bernie is such a non-factor in 2020. He really is a recipe for at best a one term of not getting much done or if anything done reversed by a Republican president later.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area… Trump’s busy pumping out the lies this morning (same as always, but maybe sounding even more desperate as Mueller continues to outthink, outwork, and gut and filet Trumpworld’s cronies for flagrantly violating the law). That includes on what’s going on at the border, as well as trying to smear the aforementioned Mueller.

On the latter, that dog doesn’t hunt, since Mueller’s record is impressive - batting 1.000 on those caught in America with plea deals and convictions thus far. All signs point to the rest of Trumpworld being in jeopardy, including Trump himself.

Well, most of what people are reporting on what Mueller might do next is mostly reading tea leaves at this point; Mr. Mueller has been playing his cards very close to his vest.

As for Jane Hamsher, I don’t know who she is. (Not notable enough for Jimbo over at Wikipedia).

This guy’s a security expert though.

It seems somebody among the NYT editors decided that “Look at how many Trump supporters we can find in Appalachia” stories weren’t working anymore and chose to challenge themselves to finding “liberal” Trump supporters. And they succeeded by…finding the sort of people you find when lots of money is involved:

tl;dr, the Gray Lady hunted down a couple of star fuckers and social climbers who think money protects them from the sort of people that Trump’s political career is built upon. Why? Because they once tried to glom onto Hillary and a staffer stopped them, so they made a decision on Election Night ‘16 that they wanted to be with “winners” and jumped on the Trump bandwagon.

Can’t wait to see what these NYT articles look like during President Corey Booker’s second term: Look here at this gay Muslim immigrant who illegally voted for Obama twice then voted for DJT.

It would be the maraschino cherry of stupid on top of the stupid sundae these clowns have been mixing up for two years.

yesterday the story came out that corsi rejected his plea deal

Gateway Pundit, Other Idiots: Tear-Gassed Babies Were CRISIS ACTOR GEORGE SOROS FALSE FLAG! (Goes to Wonkette)

You guys, he has photos and they’re ANNOTATED.

For a bunch of tough-guy immigrant haters who think tear gassing immigrants is just peachy, the far right sure does hate the idea that anyone could feel sympathy for a bunch of dirty asylum seekers. You’d think they’d have the courage of their convictions and be delighted to see a woman and her children getting tear-gassed for the crime of fleeing gang violence in Honduras, but instead, some of the top minds in the rightwing crazysphere have decided it simply makes more sense to deny that anyone worth empathy actually suffered at all in Sunday’s tear gas attack at the border. So now the Brain Cell Trust at Gateway Pundit can tell you the real truth: That photo by Reuters photographer Kim Kyung-Hoon was actually staged, because that’s just how evil liberals are, making a tear gas attack appear to have affected children (who aren’t really in any danger anyway since all asylum claims are also fake).

In a piece written by Joe Hoft, the Stupidest Brother of the Stupidest Man on the Internet, we learn that in reality, everything is fakey fake fake because some dipshit on Twitter says so.

Anti-vaxxers’ gift to North Carolina: The worst chicken pox outbreak in two decades

In 1995, the chicken pox vaccine was introduced, but that important leap in science wasn’t enough to stop the worst outbreak of the disease North Carolina has seen in a long time — and it’s all thanks to people who hold some tremendous misgivings about the efficacy and safety of vaccines.

The Asheville Waldorf School in Asheville, N.C. now has a total of 36 children who’ve been infected with chicken pox, making it the worst outbreak the state has seen since the vaccine was made available to the public 23 years ago.

As The Washington Post points out, the school has become a stronghold for parents who refuse to vaccinate their children. In a statement to a local public radio station, the school seemed to be enabling the “choice” concept utilized by anti-vaxxers.

^snip^

Out of Asheville’s 152 students (who range from nursery school to the 6th grade), 110 have not been vaccinated for chicken pox, according to the Citizen Times. Given that fact, it’s logical to assume that these children haven’t been vaccinated for other illnesses. One way for parents to get around district vaccination requirements is to obtain religious exemptions, and Asheville had a lot of them. During the 2017-18 school year, 19 of 28 kindergartners obtained exemptions from at least one required vaccine.

What other reason do you vaccinate your kids? You don’t vaccine them because they get sick. You vaccinate them so they don’t get sick, that’s the only reason to get a vaccine and it’s a damn good reason. The right’s trend into loud anti-vaccination hysteria is a funny one though there is a loud part of the left weird on that shit too but they never had one of their own as President.

Of Course Fake AG Matt Whitaker Ran A Daycare With NO TOYS (Wonkette)

Whitaker’s resume is high on scam but low on credentials. He’s boasted of valuable experience from owning several small businesses — one of which was the Little Endeavors daycare center in his hometown of Ankeny, Iowa. From 2003 to 2005, people willingly entrusted their kids to someone with more than a passing resemblance to Lex Luthor. Still, this is certainly solid PR for Whitaker, right? How can you not respect and admire someone who works with children? Well, it’s actually pretty easy if they suck at it and have no soul.

The Associated Press obtained 49 pages of complaints and inspection records covering Whitaker’s ownership under the Iowa open records law. They paint a mostly positive picture of Little Endeavors but also show persistent concerns about a shortage of toys and supplies in some rooms and occasionally serious safety incidents.

Hello.
I am very familiar with the Lordstown Ohio GM plant. When I was hauling cars back in the late 70’s I picked up there quite often. Operating out of Lewiston NY, it is the only remaining plant from my days hauling. Baltimore, Wilmington De, Linden NJ, Tarrytown NY all shuttered. Oshawa delivered to Wellesly Island NY and Lewistown which were rail heads. They shutter Lordstown GM, that will kill that area. It sits in Trumbull county, which BTW…… What Republican Donald Trump did in Trumbull County and nearly pulled off in Mahoning County hasn’t been done in 88 years.
Talk about buyers remorse. I imagine there are a lot of very upset people. It isn’t like that part of the world has a surplus of jobs that pay as well as GM does.
I find no joy in any of it.

Mark Summer makes an interesting point: Manafort’s “plea” deal may have been done to purposefully give Mueller false information in order to mess up the investigation. The thing he and Trump wasn’t counting on was Mueller having other information to compare to.

I’ve seen a take from the other end of the telescope - that Mueller knew Manafort was lying, but played dumb in order to mess up Trump’s open book test.

Needless to say, I like that take a lot better. :)

This wasn’t just a one-off thing. Inspectors reported a shortage of play items during visits in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. In 2009, an inspector observed children “just wandering around the room as if they were looking for something to do.” That’s fine if you’re an adult like Mike Pence but children need stimulation.

I think they would too but they know they have to make the dominoes fall to get Trump. Think about how the Mafia was prosecuted. We need to find a Sammy Gravano type to Trump’s Gotti.

I’m hoping Rick Gates is taking on a bit of that role in the Mueller investigations.

Remember a few weeks back it came out he is still working with Mueller on several new areas of investigation. That was connected to Gates and his continued help in these investigations.

Well, I think it’s obvious who not to believe…..

Amazing: I wonder if anyone has made a list (I imagine it would be quite a long one) of Trump’s public claims/statements that have been publicly contradicted - and likely, truthfully - by other government officials.

Although in a rare bit of actually relevant bothsiderism, the NYT did publish this Op-Ed piece
re the affluent gay Trumprrhoids, with the succinct title:

Maybe They’re Just Bad People

wapo’s been on it:

Trump’s tsunami of untruths helped push the count in The Fact Checker’s database past 5,000 on the 601st day of his presidency

Sadly, what’s her name is ahead in the polls against Espy: dailykos.com. It will just take getting a whole lot of Democrats to the polls.

- hyde-smith will likely win - that’s a numbers thing
- no republicans, local, state, or national have or will condemn or even call out her racist statements
- the only thing that matters is the “R”

- the republicans, local, state, and national are tacitly supporting an unapologetic, more or less open racist for the US senate
- and that is why there can be no doubt that republicans, local, state, and national are, in fact, racists

I don’t meet the state’s qualifications though—insufficient time licensed and my epilepsy is a disqualification. Other than those, I meet all the other requirements.

Last I heard she is up 7 points. Trump won the state by 30+.

Espy may not win, but there is a big change going on. There are going to be a lot of close elections in red states the next few elections.

And I am not giving up on Espy…I think there are still chances he can win. I understand there is a huge interest in the Black population of the state to surprise pollsters.

I doubt that he has any personal animosity toward gays or transgendered; Pence and Trump’s base may, but Trump himself? OTOH, the couple may become disillusioned if they discover that the Trump tax cut actually increases their taxes.

Ben. you’re an Ivy League guy. You ought to know by now that commercial radio isn’t the government so it’s really not a free speech issue. If I were to get a job on a commercial radio station in Nebraska and I said nothing but Communist propaganda, you would want me off the air. So why should this guy be any different? This guy that Sasse is championing doesn’t have a constiutional right to a commercial platform saying his views. What he has a right to do is saying them without fear of the government punishing him and his employer ain’t the government so Sasse can shut it.

Curious. I got a letter from the state Rural Water Association seeking job applications for a “circuit rider” trainer for water operators in the Nebraska Panhandle. They invited me to send in a résumé.

I don’t meet the state’s qualifications though—insufficient time licensed and my epilepsy is a disqualification. Other than those, I meet all the other requirements.

I suppose I ought to call them up and tell them I can’t do the work. I’m unsure why they sent this pitch to me though.

Apply anyway and request waivers for those two items.

They would have came of political infancy during the Gingrich years so that was their model not old timers like Bob Dole who while conservative and certainly combative in his approach wasn’t slimy like Newt is. Agree with you about Sasse. I’ve felt that way even if he didn’t do what Rubio and Cruz did which was to endorse Trump. He thinks he’s above Trumpism but he’s really a fake as you get at. We all remember Flake’s behavior in the Kavanaugh hearings but Sasse brought up the sexual assault of a family member or friend and then promptly showed he didn’t believe sexual assault victims by voting for Kavanaugh.

The voters may have been taken for fools but the media was complicit by failing to provide sufficient and consistent information to the average person. When “serious” platforms spend every day talking about emails, but have only one article discussing Don the Con’s flaws, it’s easy for people to be overwhelmed. Look at the recent detailed report from the NY Times on Don’s finances. Did they have any consistent followup? Daily reminders? I don’t think so.

re: #264 ObserverArt

Fools do not educate themselves, they let those platforms do their thinking for them.

That is the single biggest reason we got Trump. No one bothered to check into his past. And the really foolish thing is that past is well documented so learning it would have been quick and easy.

Fools also delude themselves. It is a huge part of being a fool.

Agree with your observations about fools, but I think your middle paragraph is incorrect: many media outlets (and, AFAICR, much of the “MSM”) did check into Trump’s past - and weren’t reticent about highlighting the negatives. The bigger problem was that:

1) Most media succumbed to terminal bothsiderism*, and persisted in focusing on Hillary Clinton’s bogus non-scandals and vague “unpopularity issues” for “balance”

2) The sheer novel awfulness/awful novelty of Trump’s candidacy became the story, which drowned out a lot of critical investigation.

3) Large numbers of voters thought what they had seen on “reality TV” was actual reality, and overestimated Donald Trump’s abilities by logarithmic factors (and/or thought he would “pivot Presidential” once in office)

4) Larger numbers of voters simply didn’t fucking care.

* “hard-wired for “Republican’” IOW

That was my point. We’re talking about homophobia though not transphobia. I look at this way. Anyone not homophobic wouldn’t have considered Mike Pence to be their running mate. By picking Pence for VP, Trump said, “Yes, I trust you to carry about my agenda” should I die or be incapacitated. ” Pence could be the nicest of people(don’t believe it to be a possibility) but being a severe homophobe is a deal breaker and TBH an indicator you can’t be a kind person. At the very least Trump is indifferent to homophobia and that can’t happen. You need to be against it as Obama and Clinton and Biden and Kaine are and were.

Perot I don’t think was a bigot, perhaps a demagogue but I agree he would have been over his head. These businessmen have a certain arrogance to them that I can’t stand. The whole I can do it better because I did it in business smug attitude. Running a state/nation is different than a business, you dumbases and that really is why most of our successful leaders have not been businessmen but men and women of primarily reason and intelligence rather than men who just got bored with business and wanted to try out government.

And by candidly I don’t mean speaking “your mind”, I mean looking at our racial history honestly. Looking at the fact that it wasn’t until the 1960’s when immigration quotas were lifted on Asia especially. Looking at the fact that survivors of lynchings still live among us. That Emmett Till happened after Jackie Robinson took the field at Ebbets Field. That the Mississippi three civil rights murdered happened in teh age of Color TV. And that Treyvon Martin’s killer got away with murder in the age of Facebook and the Tweet.

He was successfully sold as such. And he had no record of public service.

and this is the word that keeps coming up wrt to trump’s campaign: ‘sold’

- first rule of sales is not overcoming objections or solving problems together
- it’s creating an artificial need, and then filling it

sure every politician sells themselves to a degree - but that’s more packaging and a bit of spin

this was “you’re soaking in it”, “put a tiger in your tank”, “does she or doesnt she?”

For white America being called a racist is the worst thing to many of us because we think to be racist must mean you’re something like a Nazi or KKK member. That even to most of the most far right wing Americans is something you don’t want to be associated with but what we don’t do and this is where the media fails is comprehend the fact that racism isn’t just KKK/Nazi or not racist. It’s why I try to say that I’m not colorblind, I’m merely coloraware. I won’t ever say some cliche bs like I don’t see color. I do see color but what I try to see is the individual who is that color or comes from that other culture. White America doesn’t help any critiques about racism when we go “Why I can’t be racist, I have that black friend” or “I’m not racist, I love such and such athlete or musician or actor.” You have prejudices. We all do. It’s about not letting your prejudice get in the way of how you treat people. And that’s where Trump has failed big time.

Trump was a TV personality to many. His bluster and recognition to many people was a sell. It’s the fucking of a century.

Yep, and it just allowed real villains like Mulvaney and Miller, etc., etc. with access to the levers of power to further fuck people over.

Native Americans 1607-1620: We may have to get our hands dirty dealing with these boats full of invaders.

/

In 1620, a group of Comanche (on foot, wearing nothing but loincloths) defeated a group of Spanish soldiers (on horseback, with armor and helmets) — a recent PBS doc showed us the carvings on rock walls depicting that battle.

The spoils included enough stallions and mares to start a breeding program. Within one human generation, the Comanche had become the finest horsemen the world has ever seen; that’s how they for more than 200 years dominated a pretty damn big piece of territory.

It wasn’t just better guns that enabled the US Army to ultimately prevail; an unlimited supply of reinforcements had a lot to do with it. Still, under the circumstances, 200 years is a pretty good run.

perot was and sounded way smarter (he had charts!)
and as an outsider to politics was just a bit too….goofy, off, buffoonish

the country wasnt ready to take ‘buffoonish’ seriously and put it behind the desk

ps - as president he would have been way over his head. not knowing anybody or having a clue how it all worked. and so much is foreign policy, not ‘management’ or budgets

still he would have been light years better than this our first foray into outsider / buffoon

Perot’s TV ads were mesmerizing and demonstrated a mastery of certain topics. Unlike Trump, he truly was a successful businessman in a field of modern technology. I have no doubt that he would have hired “the best and the brightest” for those areas where he lacked expertise. He was/is crazy but he would have demanded knowledge and not slavish loyalty from those he appointed. Given his eccentricities, who knows what he actually would have accomplished.

If you want a businessman for President, prior political experience should be a must — someone like Bloomberg, perhaps, if he were 15 years younger.

I am too but I think people should be aware that there is more to racism than just the extremes. Bernie Sanders recently tried to claim that people who were uncomfortable with voting for Gillum or Abrams shouldn’t necessarily be labeled as racist and I can’t disagree more. To me, that’s part of the definition. it’s feeling that a PoC can’t govern you, no different than refusing to have a PoC as a supervisor or manager at a job site.

“I said I supported making some changes that would increase police accountability, and the conservative on the show interrupted to say that what we really needed to talk about was black-on-black crime. Now, “black-on-black crime” is a conservative talking point. It may have been used politely in the past, but it’s become coded language that supports a racist view of black people. I pointed out that inner-city crime wasn’t a big problem in Seattle, which is one of the safest major cities in the country. The host wanted to move on, but I said I thought the conversation should continue. It wasn’t right to end on a “dog whistle” like that. The conservative just lost it. He started pounding the desk and yelling at me: How dare I say that. He wouldn’t allow me to say that. We were in a small studio, and he was standing over me. (I found out later that a former mayor of Seattle was on Twitter writing, “What’s going on? I’m listening to an angry white guy scream at a black woman on the radio.”) The host didn’t know what to do. I hadn’t even called the guy a racist or a white supremacist.”

Thanks looks like a good read. As you know, I’m big into genealogy. One problem we encounter in the Irish descent community is those who love to push the Irish slave mythos to dismiss black people talking about slavery, Jim Crow, and their ramifications on the African-American community. To be fair, the actual Irish people are disgusted by this but it’s a problem. I like this blurb buy Oluo.
Oluo: “I’m sorry you feel hurt” is not the same as “I’m sorry I hurt you.” Are you apologizing for how that person took your action or for your action? I think you need to set aside the “I didn’t mean to” defense. It doesn’t really lessen the hurt to know that the person who used offensive language doesn’t actually hate me. We should take responsibility for our actions. If you bump into someone on the street, you say, “I’m sorry.” You don’t put qualifiers on it in an effort to make yourself feel better.

That’s exactly right. Too often, I see “Sorry anyone was offended” rather than “Sorry I offended you” and I like how comparing to accidentally bumping someone on the streets wouldn’t merit something like “I’m sorry if I might have bumped into you” but racial offense doesn’t work that way. Great read, thanks.

I have an idea. I worked two summers of college in a plating factory in my old hometown. If you know plating there are all kinds of nasty chemicals involved. Acids. Corrosive Sodium, Cyanide, etc.

One day the owner of the company told his morning crew to dispose of some of those lovely chemicals down the storm drains out back of the plant. He didn’t want to take the time to do it right as he was losing time and money.

Bad thing though…it rained heavily that night and the storms drain over-flowed. The plant was on a hillside. Ohio Brass was located down the hill. Their parking lot was flooded that night.

A few days later some of the people that had parked in that lot had paint peeling off the lower portions of their cars. The EPA was called in because this was not a usual occurrence, even if that lot had flooded before.

The EPA did some chemical evaluations and found…acids and sodium. They knew right away where that came from.

The owner tried to deny it of course, he was a real piece of work. EPA wasn’t having it and they gave him a pretty big fine and watched him for a few years to make sure he was handling the disposal of those chemicals in a proper manner.

It was my understand the fine was stiff enough it would have been much cheaper to dispose of those chemicals correctly.

Had it not rained the owner probably would not have been caught and would have continued dumping like that when it was convenient to do so.

Perot also said what he wanted to say, grounded it in some set of reality (he pushed for the pass to play - if you fail you can’t participate in extra-cirricular activies - here in Texas) and hoped you’d agree. Trump’s statements have no grounding in reality. Perot would have at least acted like a businessman.

re: #365 Archangelus

You’re wrong as the analogy actually holds.

Jews did flee Germany before the Holocaust began in earnest, before the death camps. Many fled before the concentration camps were established. Many fled as they saw writing on wall and Krystalnacht.

People flee from violence throughout history and seek out safe havens. The US has a notorious history of refusing entry to those seeking refuge, including Jews during the Holocaust when it was known to the government the horrors of the camps.

Also, anti-immigration extremists painted Jews in much the same language as Trump now paints those seeking asylum (criminals, traitors, terrorists, etc., trying to gain entry to US to engage in nefarious acts). And that was without even touching on the anti Semitism.

382
HappyWarrior  Nov 27, 2018 • 10:26:58am

I’m not dismissing the Holocaust fwiw but more so pointing out that the world didn’t know the full extent of Nazism’s evil before the liberation of the camps and that was what most pre WWII Jews were seen fleeing. Political and racial violence but not a genocide and that unfortunately was the argument Graham’s ideological forefathers made against allowing them.

Um, Arch, some of those fleeing are dealth with the possibility that they will be murdered if they stay at home. “Not again” does not mean we wait until there’s some critical threshold of deaths to get to.

I understand but she’s not saying the situations are the same but rather that those fleeing genocide were and allow to apply for asylum just as those fleeing political violence are.

afaik anyone can present themselves and request asylum.
doesnt mean they’ll qualify when they actually apply (port of entry requests are different)

- im getting a feeling we’re slowly creeping towards some idea of ‘pre-qualified’
- like unless certain things happened to them, or they were subjected to, which legitimized their journey, they dont even have the right to be on the other side of the border

And frankly it was just thought to be political violence before the world knew the horrors of the camps. I understand why someone may take her comments the wrong way but we need to remember that in 1938, Jews fleeing Europe weren’t seem as fleeing a genocide. We have no idea what’s going to happen in Central America. Perhaps not genocide but democide is a possibility with autocratic leaders rising.

They had already been dispossessed, ghettoized and denied a chance to earn a livelihood in their profession…in other words, crybabies and snowflakes

Right and Jews were just told to tough it out or that it was their own fault. Be nice to see more empathy here because yeah it’s not genocide but genocide and democide don’t happen, they develop over time from Dachau opening in 1933 to Wannsee nine years later.

If anything, this confirms one of the sticking points about whether Trump met certain technical aspects in some definitions of fascism: to wit….is he a corporatist/dirigist?

Corporatism/dirigism agree with market economy principles, but hold that the market must serve the needs of the state. It was a central point of Italian fascism: Nothing outside the State, nothing against the State, everything for the State. (replace ‘state’ with ‘Trump’ and see if this is accurate now)

By insisting that private enterprise must serve his notion of the betterment of the State (and himself), I think Trump has demonstrated that he actually does cross the dirigist threshold and likely meets most definitions of an actual fascist.

Like most other wasps, mud daubers are predators. The females not only build the nests, but also they hunt to provision them. However, pipe-organ mud dauber males have reportedly brought spiders to the nest, and they aid in nest guarding.

Black and yellow mud daubers primarily prey on relatively small, colorful spiders, such as crab spiders (and related groups), orb weavers and some jumping spiders. They usually find them in and around vegetation. Blue mud daubers are the main predator of the black and brown widow spiders.

Adults of both sexes frequently drink flower nectar, but they stock their nests with spiders, which serve as food for their offspring. Mud daubers prefer particular kinds and sizes of spiders for their larders. Instead of stocking a nest cell with one or two large spiders, mud daubers cram as many as two dozen small spiders into a nest cell.

To capture a spider, the wasp grabs it and stings it. The venom from the sting does not kill the spider, but paralyzes and preserves it so it can be transported and stored in the nest cell until consumed by the larva. A mud dauber usually lays its egg on the prey item and then seals it into the nest cell with a mud cap.[1] It then builds another cell or nest. Missouri’s mud daubers generally have two generations per year. The young survive the winter inside the nest.

re: #468 Weaselone

The issue is that
1. The format would introduce his lies to an audience it might not normally reach and even with corrections would through repetition cause people to internalize them
2. The format might induce a certain fondness for him due to the entertainment/kitsch value of the videos that might boost his popularity.

ok then more than just one:

“that was a lie”
“that was a BIG lie”
“that’s a lie he repeats a lot”
“that’s not even possible”
“that’s not the way any of this works”

should do it

Bush and Obama understood how markets work, which is why they chose to help GM.

At the same time, if they did bubble pop-ups with facts (not “it’s a lie” over and over) people would be more likely to read and absorb them.

When I was a kid Danville, Il had an assembly plant (Ford, I think) and Urbana-Champaign had the University of Illinois (and Kraft Foods, to be fair). Both had thriving middle class. When the assembly plant left Danville it became a shadow of its former self as businesses that relied on workers with paychecks stopped getting customers. That’s the usual story. Hard to reverse.

Exactly - the best way to rebut a lie (without inadvertently reinforcing it) is to relentlessly repeat the actual facts you want people to remember instead.

That is an interesting thought. He or someone who is going to “rent” or “buy” one of his properties well over current market value.

re: #376 MsJ

Ugh, perhaps “convoluted” is more appropriate.

Some seem to think that my view stems from a perceived comparison and equivalence of the justified plight of those at the border (and no, I’m not arguing to the contrary in any way or form) to the Holocaust alone. It’s not. My beef is with her juxtaposition of the border matter and all three instances she so casually mentioned, and for numerous reasons.

“I understand but she’s not saying the situations are the same”

Except that she kinda is, regardless of whether she intended to or not. Cortez may not be flat-out saying that, but she’s seemingly established that in the eyes of many. Don’t just take my word for it- see some of the reactions and/or backlash over how it’s been perceived and portrayed, including beyond the US. In Israel, folks on the left & right alike have been raging over it so far; leading news headlines included “Rising Dem Star Compares Border Immigrants to Holocaust Survivors,” and to use one quote, the main argument is primarily that “Through the very act of bringing up the Jewish Remnant in the context of those trying to make it to the US, she’s establishing a parallel and essentially cheapening and trivializing the events of the Shoah.” (and don’t get me started on the comments - abnormally high, and all bad).

The circumstances that brought those poor people to the border are horrifying, & no one in their right mind should be contesting that. That being stated, they are not the same as in the Holocaust (though bearing some similarities, as has been pointed out), just as they are not the same as in the Rwandan genocide, and as they are not the same as in the Syrian civil war.
And lumping those three together with the border disaster in such a superficial manner as Cortez did risks trivializing the circumstances of all.

“There are two types of arguments. One is that there are many who don’t want history watered down by endless comparisons treated as equivalences, and this is fair. The other says that because this is different than what happened before, we’re all fine, and this is stupid. The solution to the first point is go ahead and make comparisons while being careful to not claim they are equivalences.”

I’m with those who think she wasn’t careful enough. It was careless, sloppy, & unnecessary. She could have kept it at “Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime” and all would be well. Instead it’s come off as offensive to many, distracting and worst of all, fodder for scumbags looking to delegitimize those at the border.

re: #469 Hecuba’s daughter

It is an interesting approach but flawed: I wouldn’t be surprised if many viewers are like me: doing household chores or driving the car while listening to the news. So I would not be aware of these fact checks.

with some tweaking and feedback they come up with something better
maybe start a trend - figure out tv, figure out radio, etc
