At the moment, The Younger Boy is taking a Drama class in Performance that doesn’t let out until 9:30 PM, about 12 miles away, in a place that takes 2 hours to get home from using public transit. So I go pick him up. This has limited my evening drinking 3 out of 7 nights.

The day before Thanksgiving, I had two daquiris before dinner (real daquiris, no an alcoholic Slushie), and I was astonished how much it lifted my mood. But I didn’t have to drive anywhere, and I had gotten The Older Boy to do most of the knife and skillet work to make haluski.

Mrs. Fish and I snuck a little whiskey into our Coke at Thanksgiving lunch. I don’t know if it’s because my folks are getting more pigheaded as they get older, or if we’re getting less tolerant of their intolerance as we get older.

Florida police chief gets 3 years in prison for framing 3 innocent Black men

Raimundo Atesiano, the former police chief of Biscayne Park, Florida, stands convicted of directing his officers to frame innocent men in a series of unsolved burglaries. He now admits he was trying to please white community leaders, and manipulate property crimes statistics in the town of 3,000 residents.

I lucked out this year, there was only a little political talk and I was mostly able to keep focused on the football game at the time. It was fun listening to my mom bitch about millennials because Prop 5 failed out here, and then tell everyone she won’t buy the kids any Nike gear.

It’s really designed to be more conservative. They represent the whole state, while a number of House members represent very liberal districts.

It is interesting though since GOP Senate leaders since Dole really haven’t been moderate. Lott wasn’t, Frist while not batshit insane wasn’t, and McConnell definitely isn’t. I think you’re right though but it is interesting that the Dem Senate leaders since George Mitchell have definitely in the middle of the party.

Yep there are parts of very red states that are quite blue and vice versa. There’s really not too many states exclusively blue or red one way or the other which is why Senators have a more difficult time being too ideological than Reps do IMO.

Exactly. This is, of course, by design - the problem being that this design is starting to become problematic when hyper-partisanship comes into play, when the Senate is willing to fuck over the House just because they can and not because of any actual considerations of policy or what’s best for America.

So a minority screws over other minorities at the behest of powerful white people.

I’ve read this story before.

Back when the guy I sold my shop to was my employee, he told me he would wear a cowboy hat when he was driving, so cops would think he’s white. He would get pulled over a lot less. It was in a conversation where he told me how racist the local cops are, and that the Hispanic cops were the worst. Now he has two friends he went to high school with on the force, both Hispanic [not minorities, though, in this town]. I bet things have changed a little, at least.

I miss my folks everyday, but they were not the most politically astute of people.

After complaining in 2004 of what a bad President George W. was, they announced they were still going to vote for him. Incredulous, I pointed out to them if they hired someone for a job and they did a shitty job, they’d fire that person on the spot.

This was considered for a few moments, and then my dad said basically “Sure, he’s done a bad job, but we need to give him a chance to fix it.”

I just stared, slack jawed.

I know my dad voted for Clinton in 2016. That said, I really honestly believe it was only because Trump was from New York and my dad, being a native Philadelphian, despised all things New York.

Luckily, my parents were apolitical enough that they never got infected by Fox News. My partner’s parents fell into that trap. It’s a fucking nightmare. I don’t have the patience for that shit the way she does.

Somebody went off on me on Twitter today because I pointed out that Guardian journalist Luke Harding has some [cough] credibility issues.

“Just because he caught the NSA hacking his computer, that means nothing he writes is credible ever again? COME ON!”

Yes, because one hallmark of the NSA, one of the most clandestine info gathering outfits on the globe, is to openly taunt people they surveil by controlling their computer in front of them.

I’m always amazed that people who think like that can do things like sign their name on a document without putting themselves into the ICU for a month.

I for one believe him, and I’m certain it was the NSA that broker into his office late one night and spilled coke on his keyboard so the “Backspace” key stuck.

Very good sign for Espy in the early going in Mississipoli. The first six precincts in DeSoto County (suburbs of Memphis) voted less than 51-49 for Hyde-Smith. Cheeto Boy won 65% of the DeSoto vote in 2016, and that was the worst vote share for a GOoPer candidate in that county since 1996.

A little overhopeful, I suspect. While Espy’s 90% of the vote in Hinds County so far is amazing, the total turnout there doesn’t look like it’ll get that high.

Still mostly “no votes” gray in the Delta, which is good; Espy’s down 15,000 votes, which is not.

Actually, the truly annoying thing about her win is Trump is going to pull a border stunt every time an election comes around.

He will shortly tweet that everyone said she was going to lose and he alone carried her to victory, and she’ll just have to grin and eat that shit sandwich.

They sure seemed to make a turn for the good once Hue was gone and Gregg Williams took over from his defense coordinator job. And Freddie Kitchens seems to know what to do with Baker Mayfield as the offensive coordinator.

They started out improved but still shaky earlier this season. The last three games with the change they have looked 100% better.

Amazing what a coach can or can’t do with a pro team. Well, that and finally they had some good drafts and signings because they have a real front office. That is a first for this franchise. It was never right after Modell made off in the night to Baltimore.

The Edge…There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others-the living-are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later. But the edge is still Out there.

The RWNJs seem to delight in describing the caravan refugees as “hordes” (which they usually misspell as “hoards.”) This raises a question: How many hordes can you get into a bus? A standard ICE tent?

(This was inspired by something I read about the Korean War in T.R. Fehrenbach’s This Kind of War. The western press had become fixated on the Chinese “hordes,” with scarcely any action involving anything less than a horde. In fact, the Chinese operated mostly in platoon size or smaller groups, since to do otherwise was to invite instant destruction by UN aircraft and artillery. This led cynical GIs to quip, “Hey, Sarge, how many hordes in a Chinese platoon?”)

The Washington Post (in its opinion column) is now reporting on Marcy Wheeler’s consideration of Robert Mueller asking for sentencing of Paul Manafort and what it might mean, adding some of their own information.

It looks like a big day for collusion. No wonder Trump is raging. (Paul Waldman at WP, with video):

This is obviously bad news for Manafort, because without his plea agreement he could spend many more years in jail. But it could also be bad news for President Trump.

This is where, I must stress, things get speculative. But before we get to the speculation, there are some important pieces of context. First, it’s unlikely that Mueller would be withdrawing Manafort’s plea agreement unless he had specific evidence demonstrating that Manafort lied. He’s going to lay that evidence out for the court as the judge considers what sentence to give Manafort, in what amounts to another indictment.

Second, Trump’s lawyers and Manafort’s lawyers have a joint defense agreement that allows them to share information. And third, Trump recently completed a set of written answers to Mueller’s questions.

Sous vide is perfect for pork tenderloin. If you didn’t already, try searing the tenderloin first. Let it cool before you bag it of course. Then when it’s done, sear it a second time. You’ll get an extra nice and tasty crust that way.
