Michael Cohen’s Plea Deal Shows Trump Lied About Not Having Business Interests in Russia

Politics • Views: 24,584

The big news today is that Donald Trump lied repeatedly about not having any business interests in Russia. In fact, he was negotiating with Kremlin officials for a Moscow Trump Tower through his fixer Michael Cohen during the campaign, as he was lying about it, and Cohen then proceeded to lie to Congress about it as well.

This may seem like just one more case of Trump lying through his teeth, but this time it has very serious implications for Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Trump just submitted written responses to Mueller. You can take it to the bank that Mueller knew exactly what to ask Trump, and that he had Cohen’s lies and updated plea already figured out before asking the questions of Trump.

A good prosecutor knows the answers before asking questions of the people he’s deposing or seeking sworn statements from. Mueller’s had the receipts for all of this for a while, and Cohen’s affirmation in court that he lied specifically about the Russia-Trump business while the campaign was ongoing adds to the pile of evidence Mueller has against not only Trump but Ivanka, Junior, and everyone else in Trumpworld.

It’s why Trump’s been slagging Mueller every chance he gets because at a subconscious level Trump knows he’s being boxed in and there’s not a goddamned thing he can do about it because all Trump knows how to do is lie, bully, bloviate, and project.

Except you can’t do any of that with Mueller. All Mueller does is get guilty pleas, convictions, and the evidence to put down Trump’s criminal syndicate.

Now, let’s take the devil’s advocate position. You would need such a series of highly improbable events for anything Trump says about Mueller and this investigation to be accurate. Trump would need people to think that Mueller, who his own people picked, is somehow deep state out to get him. Rosenstein and other GOPers are also deep state out to get him. Whitaker as acting AG also nodded in assent to go ahead with this deal.

Oh yeah, that’s right - Whitaker knows damned well that he can’t and shouldn’t interfere here either, because that too will come to light, and he’s got the same issues Sessions had (probably someone else in his office reminding him that the DOJ serves the US, not Trump).

While some information is undoubtedly new, the general outlines were supported by the Steele file, our own intelligence, foreign intelligence, David Corn’s reporting, etc. So it is time for our regular reminder that Mitch McConnell protected a criminal enterprise so that he could have his GOP president.

The Mueller Team criminal indictments and convictions are certainly signs of technical excellence.

But what impresses me more is the story Mueller and his team are telling with them. His story this week was the case of the bad-faith cooperator versus the good-faith cooperator.

Clearly that team knows that this investigation sits right on the boundary between the legal and political. In order to affect the political he needs to make a convincing case to the public by telling it as a story.

Why would he want to do this?

Because, I think, he wants to counter the bigger point that Trump and his supporters are making. That they own the legal system, that they control it, and that the legal system is compromised. This point is continually underscored by McConnell, who admits that he will do whatever is necessary, including acting without any integrity or sense of fair play, to get _his_ lackeys into lifetime appointments in the judiciary.

If the proper secure precautions are taken with counting, why should it matter if properly-submitted ballots (late, mail, provisional or whatever) are counted immediately on Election Night, or later (within a reasonable time)?

That said, Ryan (and some other GOPers) do have a vague fraction of a point re the 2018 midterms: AFAICR, a large percentage of Democratic wins/flips have been by relatively thin margins - especially in those reddish/purple/marginal districts: and, this time round, often by recount/late-ballot/mail-ballot re-totalling, and later-than-usual. It won’t matter for the next Congress, but I just get a feeling that the “blue wave”, while quite broad, is not quite deep enough to portend a fundamental shift in public sentiments (though, of course, it is a fine start). I hope Dems can properly build on their 2018 successes to do as well, or better, in 2020. Especially as regards the Senate: IMO the more-important Chamber to try to control.

Ryan just can’t admit that he was a failure as Speaker and indeed a legislator. The only thing he’s actually famous for in legislation never was going to pass Congress and indeed he had to run away with it once people saw what a pos budget it was and when Romney made him his running mate.

And yeah, it’s a brutal part of the state to spend the winter.

Yeah I know it’s based on real events but I don’t remember the final outcome. But yeah I have a friend from NE New York originally and I visited there a couple winters back. Wouldn’t want to deal with that. I’m already bad enough in the cold.

Those aren’t federal prisons though, are they?

Looks like Pennsylvania might be the closest The Don can get to New York.

Those are NYS correctional facilities, for the state crimes Trumpworld crime syndicate members engaged in.

Federal prison in NY?

Naw, if they’ve engaged in the crimes, they belong in Florence ADX - both because of their own personal security and because of their high crimes. Leavenworth is another alternative. NY has Otisville. The Metropolitan Detention Facilities in NYC are essentially for pre-trial dispositions. Once convicted, they go elsewhere. Otisville is probably the closest, or Fort Dix in NJ.

Yeah it is pretty good so far. Benicio del Toro is of course fantastic as always. Patricia Arquette’s character is quite something, too. Paul Dano manages to play some gritty roles. It’s directed by Ben Stiller of all people.

If Jefferson Davis never went to prison for his crimes, then you’re probably right (though he did spend some time in federal custody that would be similar to a modern military jail).

Though I suppose it all depends on just how bad the crimes end up being. If he’s impeached and removed or resigns, Pence is going to make a political calculation on what’s best for his re-election campaign.

if you think the last two years of tweets and interviews and comments were a wild ride, i’m suggesting that you strap in

EVERYTHING he says is going to get weirder and wackier the more cornered and trapped he gets (and feels)

cause there’s nowhere to go except more insane, more conspiracy, more lies, more outlandish

hang on

Malignant narcissists can never admit to being wrong or at fault for anything bad. As the evidence mounts that Trump is in fact wrong and at fault, he will thrash around wildly, trying to find some way, no matter how convoluted, to blame others.

Anyone idiotic enough to work for Fuckface von Clownstick will find themselves targets of his attempts to deflect blame (for example, he couldn’t attend the memorial services for WWI soldiers because the Secret Service blocked him, so his failure to attend is their fault and not his). So staff, in addition to dealing with the massive chaos that Whiny Donny has created, will now find themselves being blamed for Trump’s mistakes and find themselves the object of his ire. We’ve already seen this pattern with several of his appointees.

Because the Whiner-in-Chief is, to quote Rex Tillerson, a “fucking moron”, he’ll continue to make more and more of his staff and defenders enemies. Eventually, this will lead to his downfall. All because of his intense narcissism. I just hope it happens soon, before he does more damage to our country.

Ah! I didn’t know there was a specific phrase for that, thanks. But yeah I think that is Putin’s ultimate end game.

Putin doesn’t have an endgame. He’s an impulsive opportunist, who has an ecosystem around him that covers for his fuckups and generates ex post facto justifications for it. He’s got a declining economy, a pissed off population due to pension age fuckery, and a rickety military stuck in multiple dead-end semi-wars.

He and the rest of the Kremlin leadership fundamentally do not understand the West, which is dangerous. I’m pretty sure he was shocked that Obama allowed Trump to win and then actually take power, since that would never happen in Russia. He would have planned on a weakened Clinton presidency that grabbed power from the rightful winner, showing everyone that America was just as corrupt as Russia.

Interesting to see the amicus brief’s in support of the US. 36 States, led by Texas (and including Florida, California, and New York) support the dual sovereignty doctrine, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. The only other amici in support of the US is by the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and by the National Association of Counties. The NIWRC brief raises the issue of dual sovereignty with respect to tribal lands. The states and counties are basically trying to hold onto existing power.

Very interested to see how that case plays out.

What Charlie Kirk and other conservatives who think they can insult and belittle the AA community into abandoning the Democrats for them don’t get is that the Democratic Party has succeeded in the Democratic Party by listening to African-Americans. It’s actually something that explains why running a socialism or bust type campaign hasn’t worked either. You get people to your side by listening to them. I saw HRC. She listened to community leaders on issues much more than Trump or Sanders did. And that’s why HRC by far was more popular with minority communities than either were.

re: #154 gwangung

My recollection was that there is enough information on separate incidents that there could be both federal and state prosecutions that would never overlap.

Right, the question is how SCOTUS rules on a blanket Ford to Nixon style pardon for “all crimes” committed in a given time frame. If they do strike down separate sovereigns they’re going to have to explicitly say what happens when there’s some degree of statutory overlap. Like, is State tax evasion substantially different enough from Federal tax evasion that double jeopardy can never possibly attach? I’d say yes because false certification of State taxes is a separate criminal act and while the statues may use similar terms but describe distinct offenses. My point is just that the court is going to have to get pretty explicit in its ruling.

That’s probably the right thing for them to do though. Wait for a case to come up where someone was pardoned under state or federal law and prosecuted under the other. That gives the system a chance for attorneys and judges to work out answer at the trial and appellate levels before the Supreme Court has to weigh in.

And more likely there will be a concurring and/or dissenting opinion that will provide some guidance on the issue for future litigation.

Laura Looney just handcuffed herself to the office door of Twitter to protest being booted. She seems sorta clingy.

Somebody has probably already addressed this down thread, but if this is a literal ‘handcuffed self to office door’ the reaction should be pretty simple
— Post a person to make sure that no one harasses her, but not to interact with her; give them a chair and plenty of reading materials so they can ignore her whining.
— Keep a camera on her. To prove that no one is physically or verbally harassing her. Make sure she knows it.
— Take bets on how long it will take for her to get tired of sitting there with no food or drink or potty breaks. Side bet on whether she thought far enough ahead to wear Depends. (I call $1 that she didn’t)

Everyone is suspect. Everyone. Maybe not via Mueller, but you’ve got IGs going after Trump’s cabinet secretaries for all kinds of malfeasance too. Zinke, Pruitt, etc.

Maybe the only ones not under investigation AFAIK: Carson, Perry, and Chao.

if he leaves office early for any reason, that will make twice in the last 50 years that a republican president couldnt/didnt finish out his term

in both cases due to crime/scandal - and both (likely) due to election crimes
that’s a hell of a high percentage for one party

and further, for all the self promotion about being the smartest, only the best people, only i can fix it, etc, to then be driven out:

- either by a party you consider weak an ineffectual (really? they beat your ass and you didnt see it coming a mile away?)
or
- because you didnt have the stamina you bragged about
or
- because you didnt have the will, desire, fire to see it through and prove your innocence
- or not even that to just soldier along determined to complete your agenda because it was ‘right’
or
—whatever

no matter how you excuse or explain it, no matter how you and your people try to spin or sour grapes this, if you leave, one thing will still be unassailably true: you couldnt hack it.

you couldnt do this ‘easy’ job (with an R house and senate, while inheriting a kick ass economy)
you couldnt 3D chess all these forces into oblivion
you dont have what it takes to be president

just a fraud
a bloviating loser

sad

Recently up here a parachute instructor on a tandem jump apparently loosened the harness leaving the parachute with the student and then falling to his death. Experts all said it couldn’t have been an accident and so it was officially declared a suicide.

Trespassing is a tricky thing. If a building is generally open to the public, it’s hard to claim trespassing (like it’s not actually unlawful to cut through someone’s parking lot, even though it’s a technical trespass). Unless someone acting on behalf of the building/tenant asks them to leave, you probably don’t have grounds for trespassing. By letting her stay, the are probably waiving a trespassing claim.

Bill Simmons makes the point that in the mid/late-90s there was sort of a generation of “too much, too soon” guys that sort of went crazy. The guys in the league now seem to have learned lessons from that era, and the older guys in the league (like Wade and LeBron) tend to mentor the younger guys coming in. The ABA typically looks at the work that a nominee has done. They don’t really look at ideology. Or even things outside of the practice of law or work on the bench. The GOP attacks on the ABA ratings started years ago because they rated someone (I want to say Thomas, maybe) as “not not qualified”.

It’s a shame Loomer isn’t on Twitter to see all the people relentlessly mocking her fake ass. A crying shame, I tells us.

Don’t worry. I’m pretty sure that Michelle Malkin and her other Rightwing friends will share the mocking with her. That’s what friends are for.

Nah, they’ll show her the bots saying she’s a hero.

Well, as cold as it may get tonight, Laura’s ass is BURNED…..

Actually froze and it wont only be her ass.. Especially if she follows through on her promise to piss her pants. Also, didn’t I see a post up stream that she either lost or didn’t have the key to the cuffs?

Laura Looney just handcuffed herself to the office door of Twitter to protest being booted. She seems sorta clingy.

Twitter never learned that valuable life lesson: never fuck crazy.

Yes: reportedly, the police had to cut her cuffs off to allow her to leave. They probably (rightly IMO) figured it was a cheap price to pay to get rid of a public nuisance….

“Coolered” again! On to the next thread…..

LOL

What a coincidence, my neighbor won’t let me into his house anymore since I shit on his carpet. I just handcuffed myself to his front gate.
