So when is Ben Shapiro going to make this a threesome? Levin was always a Trumper, Glenn Beck toyed with being an anti-Trumper but that didn’t last, so is Ben joining this to make it the Axis of Dishonesty?

“Tens of millions of Americans have had it with the biased, ideologically driven mainstream media outlets that sanctimoniously advance their own agendas under the guise of ‘news’ and ‘journalism.’ Conservatives actually believe in a free press and the rest of the Constitution,” said Levin.

huh. not a lot of self-awareness there.

I remember the night I became an official LGF Lizard. 10 years ago today.

I remember - at that time - that I could *finally* tell a great number of the commenters how full of shit they were. This was right around the same time as the GREAT LGF CREATIONIST PURGE, very instructive where this whole glorious madness of bad crazy right wing thinking got really popular.

Beck has already teamed with a self-described financial whiz, Teeka Tiwari, to push investment into cryptocurrencies, and especially high-priced investment services offering guidance. Tiwari knows what he’s selling. Beck I am pretty sure only understands a quarter of what he talks about.

The first lizard to greet me was Fat Bastard Vegetarian. SFZ was there that night too. It’s finny we’re talking Glenn Beck because FBV while he was self described conservative always lamented in jest he resembled him. Got to thinking about SFZ a little too since hear teaching stories reminded me of Frank McCourt and I’m discussing his memoirs on a FB group. There were others that arrived the same time as me that I miss like Windupbird. He was a character. A lot more willing than I was at that time to really speak his mind.

So sometime in the next 90 days, he’s gonna come out and announce that he’s made China agree to buy a bunch of the goods that have sat rotting because his trade war led to Beijing shopping elsewhere. But not at what they would have sold at previously, and it’s a one-time deal. But hey, it’ll be enough to goose the economy for a quarter or two, and he’ll figure that’s all he needs.

The life cycle of these fuckers is getting shorter and shorter. It likely has to do with the fact that the audience they once played to is getting smaller and smaller.

I do hope that you are right and the audience supporting Trump and the GOP is declining rapidly in size; declining sufficiently so that the legislature in a state like Wisconsin will be replaced with legislators who will cooperate with their Democratic Governor instead of trying to sabotage him.

It’s not a rapid decline, but the decline is there and is more obvious with each passing election. What we’re seeing in NC-09 right now is the levels of desperation that they’re going to end up at in order to retain power.

Sometimes reasonable people can and do make common cause with crazy, bigoted, or ignorant people over a reasonable issue. The longer you hangout with them, the more likely their crazy bullshit starts to seem normal and OK.

9/11 and the years following did that to a lot of people. Lizards that are still here that joined back then, are generally the decent people who eventually recognized that it happened or was happening to them and backed away from the edge before it was too late.

The Great Creationist Purge was the beginning of that for many of us.

Ah EjectEjectEject…

Bill Whittle, is an example of when an arguably reasonable person makes common cause with crazy and never comes out of it. He never came to the realization that the remaining old school Lizards did and is completely consumed by it.

Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

un.org

In the Western Hemisphere, the United States is the only nation which has not ratified the treaty.

washingtonpost.com

You might recall it came up for a vote in the Senate, where it was rejected by six votes. Senator Robert Dole had come back to the Senate to urge its passing along with George HW Bush.

Republicans opposed it on the grounds it would “give up sovereignty to the United Nations.” At the time, Senator Rick Santorum opposed it though he has a disabled child, calling it a direct assault on the USA.

Liberal nations such as China and Syria adopted the accords.

Not that debating isn’t a real skill but Ben just thinks being able to out debate someone somehow proves his points which isn’t true. Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. So much winning from Trumpworld today.

First we’ve got Trump claiming he’s won the trade war.. by going back to the position the US had before Trump started his idiotic trade war with China and after our farmers and businesses lost billions of dollars in the process, and required a multibillion dollar bailout due to the damage.

Oh, and China has shifted their soybean purchases from US to Brazil, perhaps permanently. Yeah, so much winning.

Then Trump decided to take on military spending and cutting a deal with China and Russia, claiming that we’re spending too much. Of course, he was the one who claimed we needed to spend $50 billion more than we were doing under Obama because our military was run down and needed more money.

Oh, and then there’s the NAFTA bulkshit too - where he’s claiming that he’s canceling the original NAFTA as a way to force passage of NAFTA 2.0.

He doesn’t get how any of this works and doesn’t care. He knows his marks - the GOP bigot base doesn’t pay attention to the specifics, so he’s just spewing nonsense and knows his base wont care. They just think they’re winning all while the farms are going belly up, and Trump’s trade war is costing jobs nationally.

I kind of get the idea that “millenial” is a stand in for “liberal coastal elite.” We have millenials around here and they know how to use can openers.

The kind of person described walked into my house, they would likely starve after going crazy about being unable to communicate.

(Home-canned foods, can openers for cans, vacuum coffee maker, typewriter, envelopes and stamps, dial telephone, no wireless service, no television, sketchy slow Internet.)

As fun as it is to make fun of them, this is the natural order of life. Something common now will undoubtably become endangered. If it’s good enough, it will survive long enough to merit a revival.

As for canned tuna vs fresh vs frozen: I prefer cooking frozen fish. Much more options than canned, and less urgency to cook than fresh.

Look at LP’s…. they made quite a comeback, at least in my neck of the woods. All the chain music stores here in Ostrava are now stocking LP’s, and LP’s were pretty much non-existent here about four or five years ago; the store clerks would’ve looked at you like you were nuts if you asked for one. As little as five years ago, you could buy a good used record player for the equivalent of $20 - now, it’ll set you back at least $150.

This sounds like the debate at Wonkette they had a couple years ago over a recipe where Rebecca noted it called for canned clams.

Someone who lives on the coasts went into a meltdown on a thread about how godawful canned clams are and why don’t you use fresh ones &c. (Something something Montana really doesn’t have fresh clams.)

Same goes here for tuna. I suppose if I could land a big albacore tuna or something on a fishing line in the North Platte River then I’d go for fresh tuna. As it turns out, there aren’t any tuna in the river.

There are plenty of boomers who are helpless using smartphones, computers, and all the increasingly “smart” devices infiltrating our homes and workplaces. My son doesn’t know how to check vacuum tubes (I assume). I do. So what? My daughter can’t churn butter, something my grandmother could do. Does she need to? No, she can buy butter someone else has churned.

And I can buy a foil-lived pouch of tuna fish I don’t need a tool to open. Sounds like progress to me.

One of the English textbooks I used when I first came to China included stories of people calling the doctor to make house calls, and getting help from an operator to place a long-distance call. The book had reprinted over and over again since the early 1960s. Our department finally updated the texts to something printed in the last decade.

There was something like that in the town I grew up in too. Nana also had a rotary phone too. I mean change happens. There are some things we choose to carry on from our previous generations and some we choose to leave behind and frankly if canned tuna, American cheese, or cheap mass produced beer are some of them, then I say out with the old in with the new. The microbrewery boom is also great for prospective business owners too.

Wouldn’t they sell it at your grocery stores though? I mean we’re 3 1/2 hours from the Chesapeake and still get crab meat here. I was more riffing on the Millennials ruin another thing again. tbh. Something about canned meat just rubs me the wrong way. I can deal with it if it’s something like cranberry sauce but canned meat. Dunno.

“I need five ounces of tuna, please.”

I really doubt they sell it in those sizes behind the counter.

I haven’t used a payphone in well over 20 years (oddly enough, there’s still a couple of functioning ones not far from where I live, but I don’t recall ever seeing anyone use them). Pretty much everyone, even small children, has a mobile phone.

Superman and Supergirl have to change in the alley nowadays.

Cute scene from Supergirl last season (I think). The scene is in Kara’s apartment, an emergency has been called in and she has to strip off her street clothes to reveal her uniform underneath. Instead of ripping her shirt open, she very carefully unbuttons it. Her friends give her a WTF? look and she says, “What? I really like this blouse!”

The interesting thing to me about Giuliani’s tweet is it betrays Trump’s legal team’s frustration with Whitaker and seem to be publicly begging him to do more to rein in Mueller’s probe. The obstruction of justice they thought they were getting when Trump fired Sessions and jammed him in as Acting AG never materialized and they’re now they’re getting desperate. The reason Whitaker hasn’t overtly stepped on the investigation yet is probably that the ethics office report on his need to recuse didn’t come back with the result he wanted and now he’s desperately trying to stall its release. So all he can do is act Trump’s mole within the DOJ while letting Rosenstein continues performing all of the adult supervisory functions.

I was just reading one of the old threads from 2010 where hate crimes were being discussed. The libertarian-minded people only saw a charge of hate crime as an added layer to another charge (assault, arson, or murder, say). The discussion was over LGBT.

I brought the idea up to my libertarian-leaning wife who holds the same opinion (hate crimes should not be crimes separate from the underlying crime on the books).

Her example was “suppose someone kills a French person. Should that person be charged with a hate crime?”

Hate-crime legislation exists not because an act isn’t already criminal, but because that act is meant to send a terroristic threat to a group of people. If her putative French person was killed and the message was clear “death to the French” then absolutely you could charge a hate crime. Same with us bland-looking wypipo.

Killing gay people is to drive them back in the closet. Lynching African-Americans is to do the same (drive them out of society, along with supporters).

Hate crimes also have to be proven by a prosecutor the same as any other crime. The prosecutor has to prove the reason was to send terroristic threats to a community. So this douchecanoe allegedly saying “he came to kill a Mexican” does not necessarily rise to the level of a terroristic threat.

The best tuna I ever had in my life (35 years ago, and my mouth still waters to think of it) —

My friend mixed up a thermos-full of marinade the night before, took it out on the boat with him.

Landed the fish, cleaned and gutted it on the boat deck, dumped slabs of it into a Tupperware full of the marinade.

Called me from the dock; “fire up the grill, I’ll be there in an hour.”

OMG. Tuna steak that held together on the grill, and could be cut with a fork. Truly awesome.

(this is from the same guy who cooked a hot meal for his dogs every night.)

Taxi medallions are legally issued by NYC to run the yellow cabs. Traditionally, they have been a very good investment, since they appreciated in value from their original issuance. Their value has been gutted thanks to Lyft, Uber, etc. but are still worth in the neighborhood of $130,000 currently. They were as high as $1.3 million per a few years ago.

Surely at some point the Republicans need to start cleaning their own house and purging their members who were part of this criminal conspiracy, unless they want the next election to be another blue wave.

The abuse of the pardon power that is obviously coming (Stone, Kushner, Ivanka, Don Jr, Manafort) is going to be very interesting. In a sane world, it would be among the articles of impeachment and it would be an obvious conviction. Alas, sanity is not something this world is fond of…

You know I suspect there’s some of them that would very much like to clean house but they know that Trump and a lot of the others are more popular with the base. NOt that I feel bad because they did this to themselves.

“I need five ounces of tuna, please.”

I really doubt they sell it in those sizes behind the counter.

they do here in publix
they have salmon by the pound - usually $9-11/lb or so
and right next to it ‘precut’ ‘salmon select’ 5-6 oz pieces at a fixed dollar price
it’s usually almost double the per pound price

I’ve not read about Lincoln and the Jews but Lincoln was very progressive minded for his time about immigrants. He didn’t like the Know Nothings at all. Looks like a fascinating read. I never tire of reading about Lincoln because I really think he is our most iconic and simply our American President. Washington, especially, but I think Adams and Jefferson to lesser extents, were important because they were basically flying blind. There weren’t many examples in history to that point of an elected executive. There were some questionable moments (like the midnight appointments that led to CJ Marshall and eventually Marbury v Madison), but for the most part, they’re greatly responsible for many of the traditions and norms we took for granted until January 21, 2017.

Oh definitely. I’m not knocking the early Republic presidents but there’s something to be said about how Abe went from being the poor kid in the log cabin to our most iconic PResident. Washington, Adams, and Jefferson are all very good to great Presidents in their own right but they started out their lives with more advantages than not. Lincoln started off much more like the average American born in 1809 than the first three did to 1732, 1735, and 1743. That’s not to take away their greatness but pay homage to Abe. TJ learned law at William and Mary. Lincoln didn’t have that.

Interesting point, I wonder if the value of, say, taxi medallions, has been declining of late due to the decreased opportunity of actual cash in the cashflow (I use my card to charge taxi rides about 3/4 of the time at least: and in systems like Uber the financial-transaction part of the ride is completely “automated”)?

KG, the interesting question here would be the last time a President did not eulogize the President of his own party. Possible guesses that could be made here are: Hoover for Coolidge but frankly that happened when Hoover was a lame duck, the dark years of the Depression, and I doubt Coolidge had a funeral with fanfare. Coolidge is far from my favorite President, in fact one of my least but I think he was more modest in how he lived his life ala Truman. It’s possible that Hoover did speak at Taft’s as he was Chief Justice at the time of his tough.

I can remember watching NASA launches back as a kid. It was always cool to see the big control room.

Surely things have changed since the 60s. The control room is not the same.

The biggest change is all the women scientists, engineers, etc.

Good to see. They are now (or just finishing) an interview with a youngish woman that is in control of navigation of the spacecraft. I’d say that is a very big and responsible position. Good for her.

I hope young girls are on the NASA site watching this. Maybe one is at school in a science class thinking: “Hey, I could be in charge of landing a person on Mars someday.”

To add: It looks like the spacecraft has arrived at the asteroid. High fives!

A handy dandy primer on the sheer scale of perjury committed by Trumpworld figures from the top down.

Trump Is Embedded in a Culture of Lying (electoral-vote.com this AM)

undisputed and not even the tip of the iceberg:
- Michael Cohen has admitted that he lied to Congress
- Paul Manafort lied to cover up illegal financial transactions
- Rick Gates also lied to cover up financial fraud
- George Papadopoulos lied in hopes of getting a job with the administration
- Michael Flynn lied about his interaction with a Russian official
- Sean Spicer lied when he said Trump’s inaugural crowd was the biggest ever, despite photos proving otherwise

We don’t have a lot of taxis in Southern California (they’re mostly around airports and in DTLA). But that seems like a fairly reasonable explanation. Add in that newer cars have digital odometers and probably company installed GPS systems that can track cars, it becomes more difficult to fudge the numbers.

the only relevant difference between trump and clinton right now is
- clinton lied in a deposition - trump’s 6400 or so lies havent been sworn - still waiting on what they find in those ‘written’ answers
- and he was a member of the bar - ethics and all
other than that, clinton was having some sex. trump was/is overseeing a corrupt and lying administration

Clinton lied about an improper workplace affair, one which today would get any CEO fired by the board of directors of any publicly traded company, and which would likely lead to the resignation of a sitting president.

No, I don’t care that she pursued him. He was the POTUS and she was an intern. If a college student pursues a professor, it’s equally unacceptable. The person in the position of power has the responsibility to act accordingly.

287
dangerman  Dec 3, 2018 • 9:36:29am

also regarding mike pence, i think this mornings electoral-vote.com has a good summary about his electoral chances; ie nil:

i am repeating it in full because it is short and doesn’t have a direct link - it was a question someone posed to their Q&A

If The Donald is forced out of office before the 2020 elections or chooses not to run for a second term, how electable is Mike Pence? R.H., Australia

With the caveat that 2016 taught us that anything is possible, we would say he is not very electable. He does have some advantages, namely that evangelicals love him, and that he is from the Midwest. However, he also lacks some key elements of the Trump recipe for success. Pence is not willing to be outrageous and bombastic, and even if he tried, it wouldn’t come off as particularly plausible. While he does have a media background (radio host), he’s not particularly charismatic. Meanwhile, if there is any candidate less appealing to women voters than Trump, it’s a guy whose ideas about gender are more characteristic of a past century. And by past, we mean the 19th. He is opposed to choice, of course, and is none too fond of birth control. He also believes that men cannot be trusted around women, and so won’t dine with a female unless his wife is present. And then, on top of that, we would have to assume that Trump’s dropping out would be prompted by an abundance of scandal and infamy, which would necessarily weigh Pence down.

To put it another way, Trump won election by the narrowest of margins. Are there any Clinton voters that Pence might plausibly pick up? Not many. Are there any Trump voters that Pence might lose? Quite a few, particularly women in the suburbs. The math just doesn’t work.

so if trump goes down early pence may be able to do some damage till 2020. he’d get creamed if he ran after that.

Protesters disrupt United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting

Carrying signs with messages like “white power convention” and “UDC: KKK Ladies Auxiliary,” a handful of women from the group Hillsborough Progressives Taking Action protested the Daughters from the sidewalk.

……..

Almost a dozen members of the Daughters’ partner organization, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, created a perimeter around the house to support the women. They corresponded with one another on walkie talkies and, on a couple of occasions, spoke with aggression.

“They’re like pests in a house,” one of the Sons said loudly to his fellow members. “They need exterminating.”

Patriots… one and all… of and for the insurrectionists who fought against the Union.

After a hundred and fifty years, truth is finally catching up with the Lost Cause. About damn time.

My Texas ancestors were Unionists. One of them was nearly hanged for it. He was awaiting execution in a Confederate jail in Marshall Texas when Union cavalry raided the place and freed him and his colleagues. The local judge and sheriff replaced them in the lockup. The troops allowed the hanging of two ordinary murderers to go ahead as scheduled, the rebel sheriff being temporarily freed for the occasion.

“What people want is they want to know that if somebody did something wrong, that there’s transparency. And I think the number one thing—the reason why Mueller’s numbers are so poor in almost every poll, Harris, is because… it almost looks like he’s playing a game. Some men, more youthful and less square, wear T-shirts printed with words like “Honor” and “Freedom” and “Crush Everything”; in a promo, Stinchfield himself wears a “Socialist Tears” T-shirt and safety goggles while taking a sledgehammer to a TV set that had the temerity to play a John Oliver clip.”

I’d just point out that this is a heresy, one of the many, many heresies the Nicene-Constantinoplan creed was supposed to combat. The so-called “orthodox” position (taken from the Gospel of John) is that Jesus pre-existed as God from the beginning. This is not how Jesus is presented in the Gospel of Mark.

So yeah, a lot of the earliest Christians were probably heretics because they believed in a form of Arian adoptionism.

And, mai ghod, I can’t believe I have all that crammed in my head!

American Airlines is investigating how a 67-year-old woman in a wheelchair was left alone overnight at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when her flight was canceled.

The incident, first reported by CBS 2 in Chicago, started Friday night when Olimpia Warsaw’s flight from Chicago to Detroit was canceled and a porter was assigned to take care of her. Her son, Claude Coltea, said Warsaw was offered a hotel room but when nobody would take her, the porter said his shift was over and left.

It seems tumblr is going to ban adult content:

Tumblr will permanently ban adult content from its platform on December 17th in a move that will eradicate porn-related communities on the platform and fundamentally alter how the service is used. The ban includes explicit sexual content and nudity with a few exceptions, the company tells The Verge.
