But having seen the Conservative Movement from the inside during law school, I think there are a lot of people who are honest in their belief of the ideology. And some who believe process is vastly more important than outcome - and while I believe process is important, I also believe you can’t ignore or excuse unjust outcomes.

Because the proponents of the “Lost Cause” insist that the Confederacy was not a collection of slave states looking to protect their millions of dollars of “property” but instead brave men acting in the spirit of the Founders in opposing a tyrannical government that was attempting to destroy their “way of life.”
What if Mueller is being straight, and Flynn cooperated like nobody’s business? National Security Adviser is a big deal, a big fish on its own, so to recommend so lenient a sentence, it suggests MUCH bigger fishare on the hook because of Flynn.

To Movement Conservatives, the past is a wondrous country because (they believe) the people back then thought as they do today and lived in a sort of perfect state that we are ever hopelessly trying to restore. And it is one of the reasons why they fight so hard to hold onto these myths and legends about that past, even if the reality was monstrous and inhumane.

I know. It’s toigh. Hope Leo gets better. We’re working on getting Sandor, Marleys baby brother in better shape. He’s sort of built like a lamb now right down to being predominantly white haired. He’s 75% poodle and 25% lab while Marley was all poodle. The other two are beagles who we’ve never had before. And thanks losing Marley was tough. We all miss him and I know it was tough for my niece especially since she’s never dealt with losing a loved one. I know she’ll always remember Marley as will my SiL since he was the first dog they loved.

The purpose of the process is to attempt to remove the biases humans have; it has the hallmark of the rational thinking of the Founders. It doesn’t work very well when the bias against some people is embedded in the process. That is what we have to remove, but there are plenty invested in not removing them.

For white Southerners I boil it down to not wanting to admit the old romantic stories about the war and the bravery were for a shitty cause. In the Civil War years, no problem admitting that you’re fighting to protect slavery staying legal but even by the 1880’s when Jubal Early started the Lost Cause and certainly by the 1930’s when Douglas Freeman wrote his Lee biography, slavery was seen as ugly by the public as a whole. I think it’s similar to how people like D’Souza attempt to make evil groups like the Nazis, Klan, Jihadists, etc comparable with modern liberals because they can’t sdmit their ideology has more in common with the broader points of those three and to admit that would be to acknowledge the flaws of their ideology and they’re not willing to do that.

Yeah! And I think that shapes what we see now. We all knew someone who was alive from 1865-1920 even if we didn’t which is very likely know someone who fought in the war. And that’s where the family myth comes in. Let’s call this hypothetical family the Smiths. In 1861, Joe Smith goes to war. He’s caught up in the fervor. He believes slavery is just even if he’s too poor to own slaves. In 1870, Joe’s son John is born. John hears his Daddy make Lee a secular saint and passes this down to his kids. By 1900, Joe is an old man and John is father to James. James loves hearing Grandpa Joe’s stories even though his memory is off. And James even reads books by educated me who lionize the CSA cause and don’t mention the faults either personally or militarily of Lee. James has Joe II who serves in WWII and has bought all the old mythology even though he never knew Joe I. Joe II passes this down to his son and grandson. And thus we have people in 2018 who are buying second hand family lore as the absolute truth because Dad said his Grandpa was a brave man who didn’t care about slavery.
I’ve talked about this with our genealogists but people want their family story to be more romantic than it is. Hence how myths are born. Stories of royal ancestors or of national hero ones get believed. Family lore is part of family history too but it’s not true history.

Yep! Interestingly I’ve had some lore proven true. There is indeed a part of a township near Pittsburgh named after my great grandfather’s grandfather. Just as I did in fact have Partisan relatives in WWII in the Balkans but research begins new questions and some old ones remain unanswered. I still don’t know if my great Grandfather was friendly with Honus Wagner. Some get disproved too. My Nana’s Aunt did not come from Ireland to take care of her when their mother died. The aunt was American born though certainly spoke Irish. We need to be careful with our lore especially if it’s part of a larger story ie Southern motivation for seceding.

I don’t know much about how my mother’s family got to Georgia from Wales, but I know my great-grandfather’s family took him to Hamburg and apprenticed him to a whaling ship cook in exchange for his signing bonus (which probably kept the rest of the family alive). Ten years later he disembarked in San Francisco, and wound up travelling to St. Louis in search of German women.
Sometimes the Scots in the Scottish group I’m in get frustrated with the Americans especially who claim they have trees that link them to William Wallace or Robert the Bruce. Just as I know an Irish historian who whenever he can debunks the Irish slav stuff.

If she doesn’t move forward then the government collapses, she’s out as Party Leader and possibly even out of the party altogether, and the nation finds itself back as Square One as the squabbles begin over just how “hard” or “soft” a Brexit the nation can stand.
Of course, to rub salt in the wound, the EU comes out the same day and basically says “You guys can stop hitting yourselves in the face anytime you want, we won’t hold it against you.”

It’s been argued by historians that the outcome of the Suez Crisis was Britain no longer being the global superpower it once was and I think that for a good many Brits, they have yet to find their place in the world. There’s a certain resentment among some about being second banana to the USA and you can clearly ascertain resentment about Britain being economically bested by Germany, not to mention their long-standing rivalry with France.
It’s a post-Empire hangover that stubbornly refuses to go away.

A new general election will probably be the ultimate outcome; that being said, the logical solution would be to go to the people and explain clearly and concisely that there is no way to disentangle the UK from the EU without causing perhaps irreparable damage to the economy and the livelihoods of millions of people and thusly, Article 50 is to be revoked and the UK will remain in the European Union.
Whomever would be tasked with delivering this unhappy news would have to recognize that it’s going to be a type of political seppuku, done for all the world to see. But the British simply need to accept that they no longer live in the days when “the sun never set on the British Empire” and that ‘Rule Britannia’ is nothing more than a pleasant ditty that needs to be forever consigned to the history books. The curtain has come down on that era of Britain’s history and they absolutely must acknowledge it, not try to escape to a heavily mythologized past.
Authoritarian leaders throughout history have often come to power on promises of restoring the nations they sought to lead to a long-lost “glorious past” that they could never hope to achieve in their current state. Hitler promised to return Germany to the days of “Blood and Iron,” but he had nothing of Bismarck’s cunning or diplomacy. Mussolini promised to bring about a new Roman Empire, but Italy was in such a sorry state in the 30s that they couldn’t even afford to build tanks that were fit to be called such. Putin keeps telling his people of the good ol’ days of the USSR, counting on the millions who feel things were better when they felt “strong” and “mighty” against the West. So on and so forth.

A new general election will probably be the ultimate outcome; that being said, the logical solution would be to go to the people and explain clearly and concisely that there is no way to disentangle the UK from the EU without causing perhaps irreparable damage to the economy and the livelihoods of millions of people and thusly, Article 50 is to be revoked and the UK will remain in the European Union.
Whomever would be tasked with delivering this unhappy news would have to recognize that it’s going to be a type of political seppuku, done for all the world to see. Good question, to be honest. I don’t think anyone does - with perhaps the singular exception of Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. And she doesn’t get involved in politics.

Meghan is far from the worst politician’s child I’ve seen but she’s got unfortunately pretty partisan when I thought that the way her father was treated by the party’s far right would make her drift more away from it. I don’t think she is akin to Bristol Palin or especially the Trump sons and Ivanka because she’s not a criminal but I think she could be more thoughtful. I really like Chelsea Clinton as well. I don’t believe the Bush twins are conservative though. They seem like genuinely nice young people to me so I don’t see them becoming rightwing mouthpieces. They’re probably undercover liberals.
No, they’re not conservative at all but neither was Meghan for awhile. But it’s their personalities. Meghan has a little more of her Dad’s edginess. Jenna especially has her father’s down to earthness. Barbara seems a little more shy but both are definitely more liberal than their parents and grandparents were and I don’t think ti’s even a secret about it in their family. They just seem like good people. Their father until Trump was by far the worst President of my life but they were raised well. They don’t lack empathy at all.

We not only need to see that but we need to see that as a good thing. Yeah, it’s a good thing you can’t call a black man “boy” anymore. Just as it’s a good thing that a black man shouldn’t have to fear reprisal if he doesn’t address white men and women as sir and ma’am. Now if you want to call everyone sir and ma’am, that’s fine but the shit black men especially had to fear if they so much as addressed white people the wrong way is something that I’m glad has disappeared from our culture. In other news - woke up this morning and our heater was on the fritz. It’s not killer cold here, currently 33 degrees, but my wife was not happy while getting ready for work this morning.

Right, that was the whole premise of the Republican Party’s founding. Yep Bloody Kansas. What I’m talking about here though is how even if the 13th amendment did formally abolish slavery, it wasn’t like things become sunshine and flowers for African-Americans after that. The sharecropping system was awful in its own way and while we did learn about it in school, we didn’t learn the extent of it. I also wish we could have learned more about the Great Migration too. Reading Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns was such a fascinating read for me because I definitely thought about all the African-Americans I knew growing up who no doubt had parents or grandparents that left the rural South for more urban areas.

A local Republican party leader, Amos Goodman, is expected to be charged later this week on similar counts.
Election workers William Mann and Gregory Dickerson and party leader Patricia Mansir allegedly wrote false names, some belonging to dead people, on Green Party, Independence and Republican nominating petitions to try to increase the chances for the Republican candidates.

What I miss is frankly the New Deal consensus about the role of government. That government isn’t evil and it can in fact be used to improve our lives and that was something we all agreed upon until the right in both parties took advantage of the fact that many less well off whites were upset that liberals in both parties wanted that to mean something for people of other races, genders, and sexual orientation.

As you know, I have some Ohio roots too and in fact I still have some cousins there since Second Great Nana’s siblings stayed in Cleveland when Second Great Nana, Second Great Granddad, and Great Nana moved from Cleveland to the Pittsburgh area in the 1870’s. Priest I talked to said a lot of the Irish people left that part of Cleveland due the factories hiring Eastern European employees at cheaper wages.

This I agree with. I do think this whole thing gets romanticized by the media and I think its genesis was in the Tip O’Neill-Reagan stuff fifteen years ago or so. Most of this stuff was between other white politicians and journalists. I don’t hate President Bush but he did play with racial fire when he did the Willie Horton ad, he did go with Reagan who race baited too, etc.
I also think it’s easier for politicians who are already doing well to disagree than those of us who get negatively impacted by bad Republican policies to go “Well, he was a good person at least” because A) We don’t know that person and B) That may well be but their policies turned my life upside down. As far as I’m concerned, the Republican Party has never seriously addressed the race baiting it did to get Southern whites to support them and the reason for that frankly is they’re still doing it. Corey Stewart ran a campaign that George Wallace would have been proud of just this Fall.

Bush Sr opened the door for Trump white nationalism, and that is not being acknowledged.

That’s where the media needs to be better. It’s easy to shrug off Reagan’s now infamous 1980 Philadelphia, Mississppi speech as just being politics but imagine being a black person hearing the shit Reagan said about black people in coded language and then seeing the same man put up there on the Pantheon of great Americans. Indeed - the “Lolita Express” wasn’t some wacko conspiracy theory, it was very much the real deal and like you said, everyone just pretty much chooses to look away.
