I find myself wondering Joe if it was a big deal when my great grandparents married. Both were from German families but Dad’s grandfather was from a Lutheran one and his grandmother Catholic. Dad’s own parents were a North Side mesh- German Dad and Irish Mom and there was class differences too. All those things were much considered problematic when Ross’s WASPs were our ruling elites.
The Washington Post is still substantially better than the New York Times. But I’m really getting pissed off at the Times lately. What they’re doing is bullshit.

I’m behind the curve but I just found out Netflix canceled Daredevil, and that really sucks. One of the few Netflix series I was really looking forward to, and one of their best overall without a doubt. Now I am sad.

My understanding is basically that Netflix is shit-canning all their Marvel series because Disney’s gearing up to start their own streaming service soon and Marvel has indicated an interest in do their own thing on said service. So Netflix would be providing free advertising to a competing service.

If they backed out and revoked Article 50, it would also mean the Tories cast into the political wilderness for a decade or so. I could easily see the Tories splitting into two separate political parties; the Brexiteers either leaving and forming their own party (or perhaps defecting to UKIP or whatnot, which itself was created by former Tory members unhappy with the generally pro-EU stance of their party in the 1990’s) and the rest coalescing around some sort of soft-Euroskeptic (but in the EU) position.
A revocation of Article 50 would affect Labour as well, but I’d venture not as dramatically.

The move comes after the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools suspended ECA’S accreditation on Dec. 4.
The company is one of the nation’s largest for-profit colleges, serving at least 20,000 students, Inside Higher Ed reports.

Revised internal forecasts show that Sears Holdings Corp. will bleed hundreds of millions of dollars more than it expected over the coming weeks, casting new doubt on whether the bankrupt retailer can avoid liquidation.
When the company declared bankruptcy Oct. 15, it filed a budget with revenue forecasts of $241 million for the week of Christmas and $1.93 billion for the two months ending Jan. 12. But an updated budget filed Friday shows only $215 million the week of Christmas and $1.69 billion for the entire two months, almost $246 million less than originally projected.
Sears also now expects negative operating cash flow in the weeks leading up to Christmas and net cash flow before financing of minus $434 million for the 13 weeks through Feb. 16. The revised figures were included in documents filed late last week with the federal bankruptcy court handling the case. A Sears representative declined to comment.
“There’s no place in the world for a retailer who can’t produce cash flow during Christmas,” said Noel Hebert, a credit analyst who covers Sears for Bloomberg Intelligence. “It’s very difficult to envision a scenario where liquidation isn’t the end game.”

Good read. My most recent ancestor arrived in 1921- my living grandmother’s mother. A poor girl from NE Slovakia who didn’t know who her father was who stayed with her uncle and his family until she married my widower great grandfather coal miner. Their son served in WWII, youngest daughter was the valedictorian and first college graduate in the family. And my grandmother had to work as a secretary and waitress for my mom and uncle’s upbringing. Mom and I’ll always be proud of her for this has lived the dream by defining herself but she hasn’t forgotten where her family started.
I was telling Joe Bacon last night as both our families are Pittsburgh based originally about how it was controversial when my dad’s paternal grandparents married since Great Grandpa was a Lutheran and Great Nanna was Catholic. Dad’s own parents were from different socioeconomic backgrounds too. I’m sure their parents were fine with it but those were the kind of things not acceptable in Ross’s WASP elite ran society.

I’ll take someone who may be slightly more moderate but knows what they’re doing than a damn the torpedoes progressive type because the former is definitely going to impact more long term change. I also have seen nothing from Sanders and sad to say Warren that suggests they’d be ready for legislatures that aren’t as ready for their ideas. I still recall Bernie’s suggestion that the people would just protest the GOP Congress stopping his plans. That’s not how society works.

Beto’s compared to Obama but TBH he reminds me of RFK more. That could be confirmation bias since Beto is also Robert Francis “Irish surname” and I think they have similar goofy smiles and will be fairly young should they run. I think he is going to run. Part of the knock on Reps running for President is their profiles aren’t that high but Beto definitely has the name recon that your average former three termer would not.
I really like the idea of a Westerner paired with someone from the Midwest as the ticket TBH. Looking back on it and it pains me saying this since I adore Tim Kaine but maybe HRC would have been better off going with Sherrod Brown as her running mate.
I really like Senator Brown since he’s able to communicate the concerns of Rust Belt communities without dismissing other ones like someone else we know and as OA has pointed out, he’s lived it.

If you’re the executor/admin for his estate, it would be in your interest to get more information. It could be a refund for overpayment on utilities paid.
The estate is entitled to those funds - which would then be distributed to the beneficiaries as per will or under state law (if no will).
Claiming funds is actually fairly straight forward - you have to show you’re the person entitled to the funds (or the estate, beneficiaries, heirs, etc. are). States are supposed to hold these funds as a fiduciary.

The WaPo and NYT and other national press are so eager to try and claim Trump’s somehow turned presidential by sitting through a goddamned single funeral for a former president, that they can’t be bothered to see the forest through the trees. They ignore that Trump’s off his rocker and spewing nonsense on Twitter daily (including today), which shows he’s no more presidential than he was on day 1 - and if anything, he’s less so because no one around him is willing or able to tell him anything other than what he wants to hear, rather than what he needs to know.
The media continues to lavish benefits to Trump that he doesn’t deserve or dignify, mostly because he doesn’t dignify the office he holds, and can’t be bothered to do his job or care about the details. No one else in his admin cares about the details either, and everyone right now is concerned mostly about who else in Trumpworld gets indicted and who’s sold out whom to Mueller and other prosecutors across the nation because of the rampant criminality Trump brought with him into the WH.

Seems that the naming kids after people occurs more with the early kids than later kids. Why? One of my favorite comic books in college was The Elementals, which was about what would happen if ordinary people suddenly got superpowers. It was have made an awesome drama.

The media fixated on Hillary when there were all kinds of stories about Trump just waiting to be investigated - like using illegal aliens for hired labor at his golf resorts. He personally profited from using undocumented persons in his businesses.
This was the kind of thing that would end a nomination for high office (like Zoe Baird, Kimba Wood, etc.)

Years ago during one of his fake campaigns for office, Stephen Colbert devoted a segment on his show to how meaningless these rules against coordination actually were. I doubt if anything will come of this.
A lot of our campaign finance law is incredibly stupid and easily manipulated. I’ve seen stories where candidate walks into room with donors, gives his/her speech/request for donations, then walks out and the person in charge of the PAC walks in, and asks everyone to open their checkbooks.
I’m not sure how we fix it, but right now it is just incredibly stupid.

Honestly, I don’t have a problem with it. Granted, I’m as close as you can get to being an open border proponent. So I don’t really care that someone hires undocumented workers, so long as they are being paid in accordance with labor laws. I’d be preferable that everyone involved also paid the required taxes. But hiring an undocumented worker, even knowingly, shouldn’t be disqualifying.

It takes most locales up to 30 days to certify election results - California won’t have it’s elections certified until tomorrow. That said, the lame duck sessions should be eliminated, barring emergencies. And new legislators should be sworn in as soon as possible.
