I’m to her center on economics but I’m glad she challenges the economic status quo. Capitalism can’t sustain if it is worshipped and not improved.

ESPECIALLY since I remember what went on in my home town of Ambridge PA before the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964.

People of color were “asked” to stay away from the borough pool.

Stores were “restricted”. People of color could not shop at Penney’s. They went to Sears.

“Fraternal Orders” were also “restricted” denying Catholics membership.

We had a “Turner’s Athletic Club” for whites only.

The YMCA in the next town didn’t admit people of color or Jews.

All stores closed on Sunday which hit Jews in the pocketbook because they did not have their stores or offices open on Saturday.

And on and on it went…

They need to get their talking points straight since John Hagee says the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon.

Jerry Falwell said, nope…it’s the Democratic Party.

And when they claim that Obama was the Antichrist I remind them that the Antichrist was ALREADY President and here’s the proof!

RONALD = 6
WILSON = 6
REAGAN = 6

Also—Revelation said that the Antichrist would appear to be mortally wounded and he miraculously survived. Surgeons said that if Reagan had been operated on a couple minutes later he would have bled to death.

When I submit this proof to Radical Xtians they give me that “WTF” look…

I find myself wondering Joe if it was a big deal when my great grandparents married. Both were from German families but Dad’s grandfather was from a Lutheran one and his grandmother Catholic. Dad’s own parents were a North Side mesh- German Dad and Irish Mom and there was class differences too. All those things were much considered problematic when Ross’s WASPs were our ruling elites.

Go back further when the Times fabricated the Whitewater BS. Their news reporters have a white hot hatred of Bill and Hillary Clinton going back to Bill’s 1988 nomination speech for Dukakis.

I have a very soft spot in my soul for Media Whores Online which documented all the Republican biased articles the Times printed while it was on line.

Remember, Reagan oversaw the breaking of the back of public unions, the beginning of the following decades of moving jobs overseas to cheaper labor, financial ruin for hundreds of farmers, the tripling of the national debt that has had consequences for following presidencies, and an economic bubble that popped just as he left office.

Yet wingnuts think him the greatest man to ever hold the office and want his ass on Mt. Rushmore. Hell, I’ve heard more than one joke that Nixon did nothing illegal, but that his real crime was “he got caught.” So yeah, I don’t believe that any level of ruin is going to scare off enough wingnut voters to ensure Donny avoid a Goldwater-level shellacking.

My understanding is basically that Netflix is shit-canning all their Marvel series because Disney’s gearing up to start their own streaming service soon and Marvel has indicated an interest in do their own thing on said service. So Netflix would be providing free advertising to a competing service.

Warner is restarting their streaming service too.

People won’t go to 12 different streaming services to watch their shows, so I think this fragmentation will be short-lived. What will really be funny, though, is Netflix open sources a good chunk of the technology that allows the streaming to work, so all these companies will be building on the technology of the company they hope to beat.

At $9.99 to $14.99 pop, you’re right back to paying as much as you would on a monthly cable bill.

That’s exactly why we never cut the cord. Verizon would always want to jack up the internet price if we unbundled it from TV. In addition, we watch enough TV that the subscription cost of a la carte service wound up putting us right back at Verizon’s initial price.

Christ, that’s practically what the soybean farmers said in the article I read about that mess. The mindset was just effing insane. It was literally “We were doing great until Trump enacted these tariffs, but if him destroying our livelihoods makes America great again, sign us up!

“Also, where’s our billion dollar handout that we’d lose our shit over if it were given to non-white people?”

Because those white farmers look at the brown fellows in their fields and think “Things were better when those were white guys.” It’s that “economy anxiety” that Donny appealed to that tells them personal financial ruin is a small price to pay.

135
Dr Lizardo  Dec 6, 2018 • 2:01:04am

With regard to the BBC news blurb I posted earlier about three RWNJ’s arrested on terror charges, I’m thinking it might be related to this.

A university student from Bath and a London teenager are among those involved with a UK version of a violent American neo-Nazi group linked to five murders, a BBC investigation has found.

A propaganda image placed online by the British group suggests Prince Harry is a “race traitor” and should be shot.

Private messages between members show the leader stating that police officers should be raped and killed.

Evidence suggests the leader is Andrew Dymock, 21. He denies wrongdoing.

The BBC has seen evidence he set up the new British group known as the Sonnenkrieg Division.

It says at the end of that article:

The BBC will be passing all its evidence to the police.

bbc.com

It seems like this “Sonnenkrieg Division” is apparently some kind of UK offshoot of Atomwaffen, a RW terrorist group, which has been linked in the US to five murders and whose co-founder is now cooling his heels in the slammer on explosives charges.

If they backed out and revoked Article 50, it would also mean the Tories cast into the political wilderness for a decade or so. I could easily see the Tories splitting into two separate political parties; the Brexiteers either leaving and forming their own party (or perhaps defecting to UKIP or whatnot, which itself was created by former Tory members unhappy with the generally pro-EU stance of their party in the 1990’s) and the rest coalescing around some sort of soft-Euroskeptic (but in the EU) position.

A revocation of Article 50 would affect Labour as well, but I’d venture not as dramatically.

Dozens of for-profit college campuses across the country abruptly closed this week after their parent company lost its accreditation and funding.

The schools are owned by Birmingham, Alabama-based Education Corp. of America (ECA), which runs more than 75 campuses across the U.S. Its campuses operate under a variety of names, several of which offer “career-focused” diploma and associate’s degree programs.

A statement on ECA’s student information page announced the December 2018 closure of its campuses, including those operating as Brightwood College, Brightwood Career Institute, Ecotech Institute, Golf Academy of America and Virginia College .

The move comes after the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools suspended ECA’S accreditation on Dec. 4.

The company is one of the nation’s largest for-profit colleges, serving at least 20,000 students, Inside Higher Ed reports.

In news regarding failing former US retail giant, Sears:

Revised internal forecasts show that Sears Holdings Corp. will bleed hundreds of millions of dollars more than it expected over the coming weeks, casting new doubt on whether the bankrupt retailer can avoid liquidation.

When the company declared bankruptcy Oct. 15, it filed a budget with revenue forecasts of $241 million for the week of Christmas and $1.93 billion for the two months ending Jan. 12. But an updated budget filed Friday shows only $215 million the week of Christmas and $1.69 billion for the entire two months, almost $246 million less than originally projected.

Sears also now expects negative operating cash flow in the weeks leading up to Christmas and net cash flow before financing of minus $434 million for the 13 weeks through Feb. 16. The revised figures were included in documents filed late last week with the federal bankruptcy court handling the case. A Sears representative declined to comment.

“There’s no place in the world for a retailer who can’t produce cash flow during Christmas,” said Noel Hebert, a credit analyst who covers Sears for Bloomberg Intelligence. “It’s very difficult to envision a scenario where liquidation isn’t the end game.”

Even though Sears filed for Chapter 11 a few weeks back, I predicted that probably shortly after the beginning of next year, that Chapter 11 will end up being re-filed as a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and that’ll be the end of the road.

Counter-intuitive though it may seem, Trump winning was a political disaster for the white working class, especially older whites. They were once pandered to in elections; now it’s no longer possible to indulge the pretense that their concerns are economic - or fixable

They were still pandered to, but for all the wrong reasons and with the wrong results…

So instead of assassinating archdukes, it is going to be trade disputes that trigger the next World War?

There will be something. The US has spent the last 70 years setting up various agreements under the belief that economic interconnectedness makes geopolitical sense, and then we put a guy in charge whose burning them from inside. Most of it, though, just means the US will stop being the center of them all.

Technically yes but the WASPs Douhat are talking about are typically the old money set that has been in the US since the colonies and presented a veneer of civility beneath the snobbery and elitism. That’s not Trump even though he is a self proclaimed Protestant of German ancestry.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump’s trade war continues his winning ways… debt up, exports down. Imports down.

So much winning. Not that Trump cares about the national debt (separate from the import/export debt above, which is where/how goods move to/from US); he wont be around when it really becomes a problem, and he has no interest in dealing with it either.

Good read. My most recent ancestor arrived in 1921- my living grandmother’s mother. A poor girl from NE Slovakia who didn’t know who her father was who stayed with her uncle and his family until she married my widower great grandfather coal miner. Their son served in WWII, youngest daughter was the valedictorian and first college graduate in the family. And my grandmother had to work as a secretary and waitress for my mom and uncle’s upbringing. Mom and I’ll always be proud of her for this has lived the dream by defining herself but she hasn’t forgotten where her family started.

I was telling Joe Bacon last night as both our families are Pittsburgh based originally about how it was controversial when my dad’s paternal grandparents married since Great Grandpa was a Lutheran and Great Nanna was Catholic. Dad’s own parents were from different socioeconomic backgrounds too. I’m sure their parents were fine with it but those were the kind of things not acceptable in Ross’s WASP elite ran society.

Sounds much like my family history, grandparents all arrived from Central Europe (Slovakia, Bohemia, Croatia, Hungary) around the turn of the last century. Uncles served in WW2.

Paternal grandfather went to work in the coal mines in Iowa, later moved to Gary, Indiana, where my dad rolled steel. All us kids “graduated” to a middle-class or even upper-middle-class existence in the case of my oldest brother and sister, who are millionaires.

It’s typical. GI Bill helped my Grandfather attend trade school too. If it hadn’t. Grandpa would have been a miner or steel worker, he hated working in both so he became a brick mason.

All the time I hear them say “Well why couldn’t have Obama or Clinton been more like FDR” FDR was gifited with Dem super-majorities in both legislatures since the nation blamed the Republicans for the Great Depression and honestly in some ways FDR did come up short that they ignore too. I’ll take someone who may be slightly more moderate but knows what they’re doing than a damn the torpedoes progressive type because the former is definitely going to impact more long term change. I also have seen nothing from Sanders and sad to say Warren that suggests they’d be ready for legislatures that aren’t as ready for their ideas. These fuckers aren’t hiding their conspiracy nuts anymore. They’re out in the open and running the GOP. No one in the GOP seems to know/care/bother anymore in hiding the bigot brigade. They are the bigot brigade. They’re spewing anti-Semitic crap.

The media gives them a pass, but we’re supposed to think Warren’s DNA test is a big deal? Or that Douhat isn’t anything other than a white nationalist who has a platform at the NYT to spew his bile at the public where it gains traction among the very white nationalists who want to make sure that the nation is run by whites and for whites (aka white fucking nationalists whose support for Trump is already well known).

How can you be good at economic policy if you are not interested in foreign policy?

Here is a question I would like the answer to. Who owns the NYT, and how much money did they get due to the Trump Tax Cut for Billionaires?

I don’t know if he is the owner, but Mexican money man Carlos Slim put a big pile of bucks into them back at the turn of the decade. I think it is still owned by the original Ochs family but it does have some stock. Not sure how that works.

In my opinion I think they see conservative wingnuts as a stable business model but try to play both sides because they just want to make money. I do get the feeling they think pissing off liberals is also a money-maker.

Too many liberals are all in and read it, so they must think they have them locked up and they can take it.

They get the conservatives by pandering to them in the ways we see. Conservatives have always mistakenly called it a liberal paper. So, it must work for them to play both sides.

News and good opinion and editorial is the last thing they care about. Dollars is number one.

And remember, they were dying, but somehow the election coverage of 2015 through 2016 brought a lot of new subscribers. I wouldn’t know why, but it did.

42% support for this monster is way too high. Maybe this indicates that Douthat is somewhat correct: the reason that so many love Trump is that their ideal leader is a WASP male and they were tired of having a President who was educated and knowledgeable but clearly not white and they certainly didn’t want him to be followed by a female.

if you have a chance go to missingmoney.com and do a couple of quick searchs

while everybody hasn’t necessarily lost something, interest things do show up, (ie things you didnt know you lost or were due to you)

tax refunds
unused gift cards
utility and other deposit refunds
sometimes insurance refunds
lost paychecks (how can that happen? lots of ways)
escrow checks
undeposited checks

if i told you how much money i have ‘found’ (and collected) for clients and family over the last 15 years, (in number of items and total dollars) you would call me a liar.

even when you think you’ve found it all, new stuff pops up all the time. that’s due to statutes of limitations and how long a company can or must hold onto an item before turning it over to the state

these days i have a list of names i check every 4-6 months.

from yesterday a public service lgf

if you have a chance go to missingmoney.com and do a couple of quick searchs

while everybody hasn’t necessarily lost something, interest things do show up, (ie things you didnt know you lost or were due to you)

tax refunds
unused gift cards
utility and other deposit refunds
sometimes insurance refunds
lost paychecks (how can that happen? lots of ways)
escrow checks
undeposited checks

if i told you how much money i have ‘found’ (and collected) for clients and family over the last 15 years, (in number of items and total dollars) you would call me a liar.

even when you think you’ve found it all, new stuff pops up all the time. that’s due to statutes of limitations and how long a company can or must hold onto an item before turning it over to the state

these days i have a list of names i check every 4-6 months.

Thanks, went to it yesterday, I have just under 1K coming back.

Thank you very much for the PSA!
Haven’t searched on my name or my husband’s yet, but I did a search on my mom, who was notoriously disorganized before I inherited the task of paying her bills. Now I have to wade through a bunch of old financial papers and see if I can find any account information or paperwork from AG Edwards (defunct, acq by Wachovia, acq by Wells Fargo) to prove she had an account of some sort there. Supposedly about $1800 in unclaimed dividends dating back to 2006. W-F is being thoroughly unhelpful, but for that amount it’s worth digging…

If you’re the executor/admin for his estate, it would be in your interest to get more information. It could be a refund for overpayment on utilities paid.

The estate is entitled to those funds - which would then be distributed to the beneficiaries as per will or under state law (if no will).

Claiming funds is actually fairly straight forward - you have to show you’re the person entitled to the funds (or the estate, beneficiaries, heirs, etc. are). States are supposed to hold these funds as a fiduciary.

re: #380 Big Beautiful Door

Good God Washington Post; he manages to not crap himself in public for one day, and you use that as an excuse to trumpet the pivot again? Have you learned nothing over the last 2 years?

No.

The WaPo and NYT and other national press are so eager to try and claim Trump’s somehow turned presidential by sitting through a goddamned single funeral for a former president, that they can’t be bothered to see the forest through the trees. They ignore that Trump’s off his rocker and spewing nonsense on Twitter daily (including today), which shows he’s no more presidential than he was on day 1 - and if anything, he’s less so because no one around him is willing or able to tell him anything other than what he wants to hear, rather than what he needs to know.

The media continues to lavish benefits to Trump that he doesn’t deserve or dignify, mostly because he doesn’t dignify the office he holds, and can’t be bothered to do his job or care about the details. No one else in his admin cares about the details either, and everyone right now is concerned mostly about who else in Trumpworld gets indicted and who’s sold out whom to Mueller and other prosecutors across the nation because of the rampant criminality Trump brought with him into the WH.

Another aunt i discovered she was actually named after her mother and grandmother rather than the name she used. This is an example of ‘liberal tears’ that the right wing loves to mock. If you read the actual story (which almost nobody seems to have done) you see the problem very quickly:

The homeless guy engaged in petty theft of underwear getting a ridiculous ten year sentence? Outrageous!

Wait a minute…he brandished a knife and threatened store clerks…

The tweet kinda leaves the armed robbery part of the story out.

Always read the whole story. Armed robbery will get you ten years hard time, even if the store employees were not particularly frightened. I can’t say I feel sympathy for this guy.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a two-week stopgap spending bill that would avert a government shutdown, sending it to the Senate.

Pulled a knife? He’s lucky I wasn’t there that day - homey don’t play that.

This is an example of ‘liberal tears’ that the right wing loves to mock. If you read the actual story (which almost nobody seems to have done) you see the problem very quickly:

[Embedded content]

The homeless guy engaged in petty theft of underwear getting a ridiculous ten year sentence? Outrageous!

Wait a minute…he brandished a knife and threatened store clerks…

The tweet kinda leaves the armed robbery part of the story out.

Always read the whole story. Armed robbery will get you ten years hard time, even if the store employees were not particularly frightened. I can’t say I feel sympathy for this guy.

I don’t favor harsh punishments for petty theft (not saying this is) but I see people act like stealing from a corporate store is somehow sticking it to the corporation, you’re actually hurting the employees who work tehre far more than the CEO with that. And yeah if he brandished a knife, I don’t care what he was trying to rob.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”)
Willem Dafoe (“At Eternity’s Gate”)
Lucas Hedges (“Boy Erased”)
Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”)
John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman”)

Speaking of low-life thieves, some scumbag just stole a homeless guy’s cart while it was parked on the sidewalk here at the church outreach center. He came in for some carry-food (our ever-popular snack sack) and didn’t know he could bring the cart inside. Someone saw him arrive with it so this is the real deal. Gotta keep track of illegality reported on today re: Trumpworld.
1) Trump hired illegals at his resorts and profited from it.
2) Trump illegally coordinated with the NRA (which itself was compromised by the Russians via Butina).

Butina’s still in the works of trying to cut a deal with prosecutors.

Yeah, Trumpworld colluded with the Russians (and whoever else Trump owed money to). Trump conspired with foreign powers and entities in violation of federal law.
Trump violated US law in conspiring to cover up the earlier illegal acts.

Now, we learn Trump’s fine and dandy with hiring illegals so long as he profits from them, but doesn’t want nonwhites coming to US, let alone seeking asylum.

Why? One of my favorite comic books in college was The Elementals, which was about what would happen if ordinary people suddenly got superpowers. It was have made an awesome drama.

It was the only superhero movie to make it.

Splitting off like that makes me think of why the NY Times created a childrens best seller list (the major books didn’t want to compete with Harry Potter) or the Oscars created their animated award (they didn’t a Pixar or Miyazaki movie to win Best Picture).

Honestly, I don’t have a problem with it. Granted, I’m as close as you can get to being an open border proponent. So I don’t really care that someone hires undocumented workers, so long as they are being paid in accordance with labor laws. I’d be preferable that everyone involved also paid the required taxes.
