I haven’t watched the Tonight Show since before they cut it down to an hour, so this was a while ago, but I remember having it on when Billy Graham was on there and they were talking about swearing. He said the only thing actually forbidden was “taking the Lord’s name in vain”, i.e. assuming his function for yourself. I forget how Johnny euphemized it, but he asked then why religious people are so down on shit, fuck, etc. Billy said he had no idea.

My mother, father, all my sisters, nieces and nephew, are all getting together in Summit County, CO at my eldest sister’s condo to exchange gifts for Christmas/Greed Fest (my mom calls it Greed Fest and Clyde The Christmas Camel stands in for Santa Claus) tomorrow. I’ll once again be the only one absent, I’ll be working at the ski area.

I’m the only one missing from this picture. My mind is kind of reeling.

Sir, you stand relieved … we have the watch. Fair winds and following seas.

Wilfred DeFour, 100-Year-Old Tuskegee Airman, Dies (The Root, more at the link):

According to CNN, DeFour was found unconscious and unresponsive after police responded to a 911 call at in Harlem. There were no obvious signs of trauma, the cause of death is believed to be related to natural causes.

Last month, DeFour attended a ceremony in which a post office was renamed in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen.

“I regret so many of my comrades are no longer here with us,” DeFour said, according to WABC. “It will mean there’s recognition for Tuskegee Airmen and that’s very important.”

Downstairs there was a discussion of Nick Ayers refusing the opportunity to become COS. But there was one curious statement in the CNN report cnn.com; apparently there was resistance to his appointment from Melania Trump. What is going on here? Why would she have any say in this decision? And why would she object, anyway?

I don’t know that the trams are safe. All I see when I look at them is a thing that looks like it is simply hooked over the top of a cable, not completely encircling it, and then imagining the tram swinging and the hook coming loose from the cable and the entire thing dropping. Oh, yeah. I’ve thought a lot about this. LOL.

The first time I rode the Snowbird tram, the wind was blowing 30 to 40 mph, the tram stopped above the Cirque because the wind was blowing over 50 mph. Imagine a metal box with a hundred people in it suspended two hundred feet above ground on metal cables with the wind HOWLING

Am not surprised that McMahon is also involved. Trump has designed his politician persona around American wrestling-like gimmickry.

And the McMahons sent either 5 or 6 million dollars to the Trump Foundation over the years.

That WWE received a multi-million dollar per-paid-show contract from KSA shortly after Linda McMahon was installed in the Administration was just a coincidence???

If you go back up the thread to that Utah Outcasts video from September, Mark Taylor rants about how “liberals were thinking about rounding conservatives up in concentration camps,” so to retaliate we need martial law so conservatives can actually round up liberals in concentration camps.

He never actually gets around to explain why the great liberal menace came up with this plan or why we didn’t carry it out. (We’re Schrodinger’s liberals: Simultaneously all-powerful and incapable of carrying out our plans. You just can’t get the right help these days, I guess.)

At this point, May is effectively hand-cuffed to Brexit, she pushed it along long after she could have said “It’s a stupid idea, I’ll have no part of it.” She has no choice, whether she abandons it or goes down with it, either way her career going forward is a total shambles. Meanwhile, the militant Brexiters are absolutely convinced that the problem is she was just the wrong negotiator and that the country can extract a “better” deal from Brussels if they just beg/threaten a little harder.

I think May also recognizes that if she were to pull the plug on Brexit (revoking Article 50 or whatever), it would fatally split the Tories, perhaps once and for all. I could easily see the hardcore Brexiteers drifting off to a new Brexit party. IIRC, the Labour Party had a major split in the 1970’s, even though ultimately, that rift was healed.

True, it’s possible this suicide mission by May is about trying to keep the party together even if it means mass political seppuku. Because one side of the party is beginning to recognize Brexit was a mistake, while the other is prepared to start with the pliers and slivers of bamboo if any think of trying to get out of this suicide pact. If she tries to back out by revoking Article 50, she’ll face a no-confidence vote within 48 hours of the announcement. The same fate awaits her when this agreement goes down in flame on the floor of Parliament. But if she tries to push through with a no-deal Brexit, then she may retain the PM chair only to watch the entire party go down in flames.

Hell, even if there were a second referendum, the Tories would get reamed at the polls. But they might survive as a party, so that (as of right now) might be their best option.

Yeah, I saw somewhere that Farage is thinking of starting up a new party if “Brexit is betrayed” (as he put it).

If indeed Brexit ends up not happening, for whatever reason, that’s most likely the party the Tory Brexiteers would end up fleeing to and owing to Britain’s first-past-the-post electoral system, the Tories would be consigned to the political wilderness for the foreseeable future - and that’s probably what May recognizes could well happen and is trying to prevent.

Ultimately, this whole debacle can be laid right at the feet of former PM Cameron, who made - quite possibly - the worst political miscalculation in recent UK history.

Farage is being dishonest.

He wants to start a new party because he knows that now that the EDL and UKIP are coalescing that he can no longer pretend that UKIP is not a white-nationalist party.

Because Farage, similar to so many Republicans here, wants to put on a mask of modernity, he knows he needs to steer clear of the UK’s leading white nationalists.

Sort of like how wingnuts on Facebook always want to remind everyone that the Democrats were the party of slavery… without mentioning the 100 years of change that flipped the US parties’ roles in regards to racist politics.

The diehards are largely relying in public arguments upon the assertion that the first referendum was legally binding, that Parliament has to go through with Brexit because “the law demands it.” A second referendum would not only kill that argument, but make it clear that the diehards speak for an increasingly smaller portion of voters. My only real argument against a second referendum at this point is not only leaves the original problem in place, it compounds it due to all the damage done to the nation as its sat in limbo for 2 years. There needs to be a national “mea culpa moment,” an acknowledgment that the original referendum was a mistake and those who voted “Leave” responsible for the damage done.

There won’t be because politicians as a breed realize the moment you start shaming your constituents, your days in office are effectively numbered. So they’ll spin it as a “failed experiment,” say that a UK exit from the EU needs to be better planned and prepared for in the future rather than jumped into. And the diehards will respond by saying Brexit would totally have worked had there been an authoritarian in office who could have forced Brussels to bend a knee to the might of Her Majesty’s Government. And that the way forward is to rebuild Britain into a nation that has the political and military power to dictate terms again to “lesser peoples.”

So it can be done - now it’s just up to the British Parliament. PM May seems fanatically entrenched in her Brexit position and there’s plenty of “crashing this plane country with no survivors” Brexiteers as well and they’re just as dug in at this point.

Tomorrow’s vote on May’s Brexit withdrawal agreement is gonna be interesting, to say the least.

They have a choice of wrecking the country or ruining their own reputation and self-respect.

In other words, they will not back down on Brexit at any cost.

Which indicates that she’s trying desperately to get some votes to change in order to avoid a very messy day tomorrow. Rather reminds me of the times that Boehner tried putting off votes in the hopes that one or two holdouts would be swayed…right before he just pulled the bill altogether.

The Financial Times, usually noted for their caution, are reasonably emphatic on this one: “May aborts planned Brexit vote in humiliating setback

Downing Street said at 11.15am that the vote was going ahead “as planned” but shortly afterwards the prime minister told her cabinet on a conference call it would be postponed, according to officials briefed on the matter. Number 10 has so far declined to comment.

[…]

Mrs May’s decision followed warnings from Julian Smith, chief whip, that her Brexit deal would suffer an overwhelming defeat if she pushed ahead, with dozens of Conservative MPs threatening to vote it down.

91
Dr Lizardo  Dec 10, 2018 • 4:24:44am

Big if true:

I don’t know the intricacies of the British parliamentary procedure but if they’d have to put forth a new motion on parliamentary business to supersede the previous business (tomorrow’s Brexit vote) and that new motion would have to be voted on…..yeah, that’s risky. Very risky.

Interesting wording in the statement from the EU:

We take note of the court of justice judgment today on the irrevocability of article 50.

We have an agreement on the table which was endorsed by the European council in its article 50 format on the 25th November.

As President Juncker said, this deal is the best and only deal possible. We will not renegotiate - our position has therefore not changed and as far as we are concerned the United Kingdom is leaving the European Union on the 29th March 2019.

They appear to be taking the position or “deal Brexit or cancel Brexit”.

Yep.

They’re putting the British into a corner. And if the Tories climb down, it’ll end up being a political humiliation they won’t recover from anytime soon.

re: #57 Dr Lizardo

THIS! All this because of a political stunt… Which is all brexit was supposed to be.

If you’ve not used an SLR type of camera before then you might find the learning curve a bit deep.

These bundled kits are commonly the first kind of SLR that many people buy.

I think there are some extras in the kit which are not needed (and you may not use), but they are minor.

You can get a similar kit for less money at Amazon:

that I’d recommend over the Groupon kit. Sure, it’s not bundled with a printer, but you can buy one separately that may be a better fit for what you need.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Russia could not have asked for a better Christmas season. They’ve got the UK in crisis over Brexit - knowing full well that Brexit would harm the British economy for decades to come, and that every scenario leaves the UK and EU worse off.

Trump’s problems continue multiplying exponentially as he’s dealing with not only Mueller, but the SDNY - and the SDNY is much closer to indicting Trumpworld and Trump Org on money laundering charges - as they’ve got an immunity deal with the Trump Org CFO and Cohen’s testimony showing that Trump used money laundering to try and hide the purpose and intent of payoffs to Daniels and the other woman - to shield it from campaign finance prying eyes (itself a crime).

Trump wants everyone to try and believe that this is some simple oversight. Wrong. It’s money laundering. Trump tried to change the nature of the financial transaction itself - running payments from the campaign, his personal accounts, and Trump org, lying every step of the way.

This is a classic example of money laundering - aka a federal felony and high crime.

We haven’t even gotten to the Trump-Russia stuff, mostly because Mueller’s still holding those cards close. Everything is pointing to Mueller holding a royal straight flush. Trump’s holding 8 high, but thinks he’s got a winning hand.

Russia couldn’t be happier with this, since the chaos inures benefits to them, and Trump’s attention span (already that of a gnat) can’t be bothered to address Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, EU, etc.

And Trump’s troubles extend to KSA and Khashoggi murder - again because Trump’s leveraged by all these foreign powers/banks, and puts his personal profit above all else.

lawhawk  Dec 10, 2018 • 6:35:15am

Trump supporters are absolutely resistant to facts too. They regurgitate Trump’s nonsense and ignore the plain language of the SDNY brief, which lays out money laundering by Trumpworld.

Which is why he may very well go the Nixon route without impeachment being on the table, counting on Pence to pardon him of the federal charges in the hope that he can work out some deal with state prosecutors that allows him to avoid jail time.

All she’s delaying is the inevitable. She does not have the votes and without those, putting this before the Parliament is going to lead to humiliation and likely a no-confidence vote. The EU has stated twice now in the past two weeks that she can back the entire country away from the abyss tomorrow if she so chooses. Better to do so and then leave the next poor bastard in line to deal with the consequences than to push forward with a doomed vote and leaving the country on the path to financial ruin in 4 months.

re: #281 sagehen

Telenovelas!!

They speak slowly, and loudly, and never use college-level words. Also, the physical acting is broad enough you’d probably understand it even with the sound off.

“No!! No es mi papa! No es possible.”
“Si. Lo siento, mija, pero el es tu papa.”
“NOOOOOO!!!”

Another advantage (or disadvantage) of telenovelas (especially those from Mexico) is that they try to be country neutral, so you won’t find much slang on them.

Also, don’t sweat the accents’ placements. As long as you can pronounce it well, you shouldn’t have much problems. And most native speakers will ignore the accents.

But this dialogue is amusing without the accents. Basically, she’s denying that he is her potato. :P

OT but gotta say, It was a nice weekend beginning Friday Dec 7 which brought memories of a long time ago. On that day in 1941 we were driving to Detroit on US12. Uncle was driving his 1940 La Salle and I was sitting between Dads legs at shotgun with both hands on the dash. It was the day before my 8th birthday. We had just past the Grass Lake turnoff when an emergency bulletin reported Pearl Harbor had been attacked. My Uncle stood on the brakes and my head (mostly nose) was mashed against the dash by Dads forward moving body…no safety belts in those days. There was much blood. Now, fast forward several decades to Saturday when Great Grandaugter #4 (Layla) was born on my b-day. Yes, I’m feeling pretty good.

This seems to be the biggest part of the problem, at least to me. The British political establishment, or at least a big part of it, doesn’t seem to understand that the UK is not the superpower it once was; they’re punching above their weight and thinking they’re like Mike Tyson when in reality, they’re not. Granted, the UK is one of the biggest economies in the world (not to mention in the EU) but their notions of “British exceptionalism” have led them down a primrose path of delusions of grandeur - and if they don’t wake up and recognize the realities of the 21st century, they’re on the road to ruin.

In today’s latest example of police brutality and excessive force, we have a woman in NYC who was holding her infant child, and the NYPD literally ripped the child from her arms.

How the NYPD got involved in the first place is bad enough, but that they thought they needed to remove the child forcibly from this woman is textbook excessive force. These officers should lose their jobs.

looks okay. keep in mind that the 18-55 mm lens is normally the “junk” lens that all manufacturers put on their cheap end stuff. Look at the f/stop range. Is it 4-5.6 from wide to narrow? If so, the lens is crap. You’ll never be able to take an inside shot without the flash or with a really high ISO.

PM May seems to have no intention whatsoever of securing anything. She’s running down the clock and she’ll use that to pressure Tory MP’s into backing her deal because she has, for the most part, prevented any kind of proper preparations for a no deal scenario.

I don’t know much about DSLR cameras but this seems like a good deal. Anyone?

groupon.com

It’s a solid camera body, but you’d probably want to get an upgrade to a better lens pretty quickly.

Most bodies - Nikon, Canon, etc., all tend to come with a basic lens that doesn’t quite cut the mustard in terms of specs, especially if you’re going to shoot low-light indoor type situations, portraits, etc.

I have a Canon 60D, which came with that kind of lens, but upgraded my kit to get a Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS (image stabilized), which is a solid mid-zoom (it’s roughly a 28-70 in full factor). It’s a huge improvement.

Yep, Larry Craig. The “wide stance” guy. That was a classic. Busted in the toilet stalls at one of the Idaho airports I think. By an undercover cop. And Larry Craig, the Republican Senator, was one of the most virulently anti gay Senators in the entire GOP, which says something. What happened ? Did he resign ? I vaguely recall some of the GOP wanted to support him after he made a speech with his wife by his side, giving some lame excuse about the toilet incident. Mixed medications maybe ? Or was it a straight denial ? Or did he get convicted of a crime ? Cant recall now

It’s absolutely pathetic that Trump can’t find anyone to take any job in his admin anywhere. He’s rearranging the deck chairs and even those left in his admin want nothing to do with the CoS position. Kelly lasted as long as he did because there was no one else willing to take the most important position (gatekeeper to Trump), because even Trump’s most loyal advisers know that Trump’s in huge trouble.

It’s not at all surprising though. Trump has never shown any aptitude for discipline, and that might be the most important trait any president can have. We can survive dumb presidents, we can survive incurious presidents, we can survive presidents with bad policies, we can even survive presidents with poor moral compasses. But an impulsive president, as Trump has been, is a nightmare.

Nobody wants a job where the boss is going to undercut them at every turn, counter their public statements, and basically make shit up when he has nothing else to say. And throw into the mix that Trump has always thought that he’s his own best spokesperson, and of course being Chief of Staff would be the worst job imaginable.

This.

Although what.might also be a contributing factor to the whole Brexit mess (at least IMHO) is not so much that the British “political Establishment” is ignoring the political and economic realities of 2019, but that at least half of the British public is. Unthinking “Imperial” nostalgia- usually tricked up as a “sovereignty” issue - seems to underlie a huge part of the whole “Leave” movement. That, and good old-fashioned British insularity and xenophobia, of course…

Mind you, I can still somewhat see Leave’s point. The EU is on a one-way track to be a United States of Europe within even our Baby-Boomer members’ lives, and just as much as South Carolina only signed on to be part of a federation, not a semi-unitary state, so too did the UK.

Of course, like South Carolina, they only realised what they were in for and tried to pull out when it was too late, and they’re lucky a European Civil War wasn’t the result.

What’s strange about it though, is there can’t be too many people in the UK that remember what most of us think of as the British Empire, most all of the colonies were granted independence by 1968. You’d realistically have to be at least 60 to have even vague memories of that, and probably even older to actually remember it.

I think it’s similar to the Southern whites who didn’t live in the CSA but are convinced that 1861-65 was a grand old time. But you’re right. Attlee starting granting most of the colonies independence after he became PM after WWII. But so much of nostalgia is an idea, a past that never was yours but you embrace it as your own since you remember the stories of the old timers. I’m sure you saw my elaborate story the other day of a hypothetical family the Browns:
John Brown enlists in 1861 following the fervor after Sumter. He sees action throughout the Eastern theater and he is there at Appamatox when Lee surrenders. He passes on his memories to his son who is born let’s say in 1866. That son’s early memories are of Reconstruction and he remembers his Dad’s tales about Southern heritage and honor. Then he has his own son who serves in WWI and is probably a member of the second Klan in the 20’s. His own son hears his grandfather’s memories of Reconstruction and all that. He still serves in WWII. His son, a boomer hears the memories from his grandfather whose memories are actually his second great grandfather’s. And then you have the boomer’s kid who is either Gen X or Millennial who has all that crap passed down. I get why people want to ascribe modern values like racial tolerance to their ancestors but the CSA was racist. Now consider the same format but maybe a generation added but with say Crimea or the Napoleonic Wars for a White Briton and the emprie

I can sort of understand Cameron’s logic behind calling a referendum - he reckoned people vote to remain in the EU and that would, presumably, bring an end once and for all to the Tories ceaseless bickering about the whole issue. It would defang Farage and UKIP, and with any luck, silence the Brexiteers within the Tories for a generation or so.

The thing about Brexit that I think a lot of American talking heads including those on the left who wanted to spin the results as a populist triumph, yeah I’m looking at you Jill and to some degree Bernie is the great divide within the UK. England and Wales voted to leave but Scotland and NI voted to stay. And within NI there was great divide in the old sectarian grounds too. And despite what has been said, a lot of the more affluent parts of the UK were fervent leavers while a lot of Scotland and NI’s working class areas were equally about staying.

That’s a great point. And one that is probably going to get Trump in a lot of trouble. You don’t actually need a smoking gun to convict someone of murder.

I can establish that Individual 1 murdered the victim by showing that:

The victim died of a gunshot wound sometime between noon and 5 pm on Wednesday. The bod was found at the victim’s house. We have the victim’s calendar showing a meeting with Individual 1 at the victim’s house at 3 pm on Wednesday. We have security camera footage of Individual 1 entering the victim’s house at 2:45 pm and leaving at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, we also have footage showing that nobody else entered the victim’s home on Wednesday. Nobody else entered the victim’s home until Thursday, and the victim never left his house after the meeting with Individual 1. We can also establish that Individual 1 and the victim had a dispute over some matter and that Individual 1 was angry about the victim’s position.

I’m not sure. He won’t be able to put the fear of the Trumpenproletariat voter into the legislature’s heads the way Trump does, but unlike Trump, he really is a homophobic sexist like the rest of his Senate will be.

As much as anything, though, what I want to see is an end to the country trying to define me back into manhood, and Pence isn’t it. Only President Pelosi would be and the only way to get there is to take out Pence before Trump, but also bounce Trump before Pence’s replacement as VP has been confirmed. I was just saying I have no hopes for things getting any _better_ under Pence and I’m not sure how much _worse_ they can get under Trump; for one thing, Pence would prolly end the trade war, which would improve his chances of ‘re’-election, and of having at least one house full of Rs following it.

Craig’s bathroom stall controversy forced him to step down from his position as liaison to the Senate on the Romney campaign. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Craig was vehemently adamant that he was heterosexual, stating “I am not gay. I never have been gay.”

Following the ruling, Craig announced that despite his previous statements to the contrary, he would serve out his Senate term. He stated that he intended to “continue my effort to clear my name in the Senate Ethics Committee—something that is not possible if I am not serving in the Senate.”[

He had some gall. One of the most anti gay Senators in the GOP in terms of his statements, his support of anti LGBTQ legislation, just a typical GOP hypocrite. Denied it until he left politics.

re: #233 Semper Fi

So you and your great granddaughter can celebrate the same day! Happy Belated Birthday!

Maybe, but what’s in it for Big Chris? I’m sure he might want to have some sort of career for the future other than Fox News talking-head, but WH CoS for King Orangeanus doesn’t exactly seem like a golden opportunity. Unless he figures President Pence is going want to keep him on for continuity

How about Pence is Agnewed and then Trump appoints Christie in his stead?

“No smoking gun. Just Individual 1. Who’s that? Can’t even name me, if they do mean me. No evidence. If they had Proof they would name the person, not just Person 1 or Individual 1. I mean who does that? Just ruining lives these witchy hunts LOCK HER UP.”

So when they do name you, that’ll be good enough?

Cause we’re only talking …timing and inevitability here

re: #312 Chrysicat

I think Trump has a special sort of appeal to his base. My opinion is that Trump supporters have a really strong emotional connection to the guy. A recent WaPo article talked about how people live vicariously through him. They want to be rude and crude and crass, they want to tell the Hispanic looking guy who works at the bank, or wherever, that he’s a filthy (insert racist insults). They use this nonsense “anti PC”, pro free speech argument to justify behaving in an outrageous way. They can’t in most places say what they feel, so, they love that Trump can and does

Look at all the crap online about SJWs, snowflakes, cucks, beta and alpha, blah blah blah. Incels. Anti feminism. It is this other element where Trump behaves (or they think he IS) the manly man they want to be.

They’re very insecure, and Trump appeals to this emotional need in a deep way. I once asked a Trump supporter what Trump could do, to lose his support. “Join ISIS”, was the only thing. Nothing else. They’re attachment runs DEEP.

I don’t think, after Trump, that any other politician, Pence included, will scratchel that itch, so to speak.

They want Trump in 2020, Trump Jr in 2024 and 2028. They want crude. Loud. Shameless.

Pence trying to emulate that wouldn’t work.

So his support would never be as deep or as intense as Trump’s is, among the base, and he’s a sort of lame duck, before he takes the Oath of office.

That’s my view.

My real concern is, how will Trump go down. Remember when he implied he wouldn’t concede ? Will he rile these people up to a lunacy as yet unseen ? Maybe I am too worried (a trait ostensibly despised among Trump fans), but I do have a concern that he will go from blowhard demagogue, to “lock and load, the Deep State globalist forces are trying to overthrow me”. And who knows how that could play out.
I never thought politics would be here. It’s a bizarre and concerning time. At least in my view.

Congrats, that’s wonderful to hear about your great granddaughters birth. Thanks for sharing that story. It’s a genuinely beautiful thing to hear anecdotes like that. Things that to me, were before my birth and so seem distant history are not that distant at all, and I suppose when I relay the story of September 11, to my kids, when they’re old enough, it’ll be a similar feeling: it’s , to me, a real reminder of the reality, and impact, of these events.
(It’s a denouncement, too, in the best kind of way, of the insidious nature of conspiracy theories, which are often denials of history. The great WW2 historian, and David Irving foe (testifying on behalf of Deborah Lipstadt in the trial), Professor Richard Evans, gives a remarkable lecture on the dangers of conspiracy theories, as pernicious enough to undermine democracy, or help to do so, by their denial of history, and reality. They are a sort of attack on real human experiences. Evans talks about Hitler’s promotion of the ‘Stab in the back’ conspiracy, and shows how demagogues use these to destroy trust in government: “they’ve all been lying to you”, that sort of thing.

Anyway, I don’t mean to put a downer on what is a really good post. Thanks again for posting that, and again, lovely to hear about the birth of Layla. Cheers !
