Full Video: Trump’s Epic Meltdown in the Oval Office: “I’m Proud to Shut Down the Government”

One of the best parts of this ridiculous exchange with the Lying Manbaby in Chief is watching Mike Pence try to fade away into the wallpaper.

President Donald Trump met with Democratic leaders Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) in the Oval Office where Trump vowed to shutdown the government if no agreement could be reached on border security, including funding a wall along the the US-Mexico border.

The driver who killed Heather Hayer faces:

White nationalist James Alex Fields Jr. on Tuesday was sentenced to life in prison, plus 419 years, after being convicted of murdering anti-racism protester Heather Heyer during the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville.

In addition to his prison sentence, Fields also faces half a million dollars in fines related to the attack, including a $100,000 fine for first-degree murder.

Entirely predictable. They want to watch the world burn down, and Trump’s their guy to do it. They don’t know or care that a shutdown is a bad thing. They think that by doing it, the shutdown somehow makes Trump the winner.

McConnell weighs in… complete with magic balance fairying the fuck out of the fact that Trump explicitly claims victory by being the one who accepts credit for a shutdown.

There’s one side responsible for a shutdown: the GOP.

Trump is a GOPer.
The House is controlled by the GOP.
The Senate is controlled by McConnell and the GOP.

They don’t have the votes. They don’t have the votes. You can’t get your agenda through if you don’t have the votes. They’ve done nothing to change their tune to get them.

Trump’s incapable of changing his tune and can’t negotiate his way out of a paper bag to get what he wants, and Democrats have no interest in helping the GOP get a deal done. Why should they help when the GOP doesn’t have the votes for the wall funding - either in or out of a CR. Exclude the wall funding and you get a clean funding measure.

Trump would hate that, but he wants a shutdown. Let him try.

The DNC and/or Democratic leaning PAC better already be working on getting the video footage of Trump taking credit for the shutdown. Those commercials need to roll out immediately. There are college bowl games this weekend and the NFL is starting their Saturday games. They should be reminding everyone that Trump wants a shutdown at every commercial break. Especially during the Armed Forces Bowl, in which Army is playing.

For what it’s worth, here’s the ABA’s explanation for it’s determination.

ABA looks at basic proficiency to do the job. Can you show that you can reason through cases and determinations. Do you have a record of decisions at a lower level? Do you have a record of trying appellate cases and the like?

Trump has consistently picked worse people than his predecessors - far more unqualified, barely qualified, etc.

And Trump’s picks also barely get through the Senate because they aren’t qualified.

Trump’s gotten to fill more seats because the GOP and McConnell blocked filling those openings for years.

The only thing I hate more than shaving is not shaving. To be properly clean shaven, I probably have to do my face/neck every other day. But gawd I hate that, so I usually go for once a week. But then I get annoyed because so much of it comes in grey. It’s a vicious cycle.

I could only imagine what Carlin would have thought about the last ten years.

Given how angry he was at political correctness and how his cyncism sort of turned into both-siderism as time passed, I dunno if it would have been pleasant.

“They’re all shit” was a funny statement back in the day. Now it’s become so normalized and specifically used as cover that it’s not funny anymore.

Trump is a GOPer.
The House is controlled by the GOP.
The Senate is controlled by McConnell and the GOP.

They don’t have the votes. They don’t have the votes. You can’t get your agenda through if you don’t have the votes. They’ve done nothing to change their tune to get them.

President Obama negotiated with his party and got 60 votes for the ACA. Not one republican - but he got every democrat and independent.

trump negotiates at 2yo standard - gimme or I’ll throw a tantrum. This is usually gone before the age of 4. Notso with trump.

I was an adherent to the “They’re All Shit” mindset. Thought that in 2000 when it was Bush v Gore. Through most of the aughts my general mindset was “one party deserves to lose, and the other doesn’t deserve to win.” The only bit of hope I saw in that time was, first McCain’s campaign in 2000, and then Obama’s DNC speech in 2004 - I remember thinking at the time that he would one day be president, I just didn’t expect it to be in 4 years. I’ve been routinely disappointed by Republicans (as someone who grew up in a Republican household and still has a fondness for Reagan) in the last 20 years more often than not; and I’ve been routinely uninspired by Democrats (Obama aside) for much of that period.

Trump is several orders of magnitude worse than what I ever thought the worst case scenario was. So, I’m riding with the Democrats for the foreseeable future. And continue to be an optimist - that hoper of far-flung hopes, and dreamer of improbable dreams (to borrow a line from Doctor Who).

This is a long WaPo piece about the ways the Russians use a variety of methods to muddy the waters after they are caught doing something bad, like the Skripal poisoning. They don’t have to sell a specific story. Just confuse everyone enough that the truth gets lost in the myriad of other stories. Sort of like Trump: it could have been A, or it could have been B; it could even be C — who can know? We’ll probably never know.

I’ve always been more libertarian in my leanings than anything. A believer in the idea that we all deserve to live our best lives, and we each are the best judge of what that is.

I call myself an optimist because I believe that today is better than yesterday and that tomorrow will be better than today. That it will get better, no matter how bad things seem, because in the end liberty wins.

I’ll also add this: there seem to be a lot more inspiring people on the Democratic side of the aisle these days. Duckworth, Harris, O’Rourke, all come to mind. On the GOP side, I mostly see cravens and cowards.

JFC:

But just as I did not choose to be gay, I did not choose to be conservative. My political evolution happened over time as I came to realize that I valued truth and reason over narrative and emotion. I became an outspoken voice on the right because I felt I had no other choice than to speak up and shout the truth, despite overwhelming pressure from the media.

The conservative movement of 2018 does not care about truth or reason, they care only about narrative and emotion. How you can look at a political party/movement which touts Donald motherfucking Trump as it’s leader and say, “yup, those guys care about truth and reason” I just don’t fucking get that, at all.

And then there’s this:

By the very nature of the left’s views on what constitutes “hate,” I am incapable of freely expressing myself on any public forum without very careful editing and presentation. I never truly experienced hate until I came out as a conservative. In their obsession with eradicating language and points of view that feel oppressive to some marginalized groups, the left has pushed others to the margins and suppressed their voices.

My god, the horror of actually having to think before you speak! The idea that you might have to consider the views of someone other than yourself! How could one possibly be free if they can’t advocate for the use of governmental powers against others!

What’s actually most amazing about that second excerpt is that he starts the piece with this:

The idea was that if we could appeal to others’ sense of compassion for our social plight, perhaps they could understand the effects of their intolerance. I often fantasized about breaking through the walls of prejudice and somehow speaking to the heart of someone who did not yet realize I was just a person like them.

Lack of self-awareness, they name is American conservatism, circa 2018
