Brilliant! Nice ax. Although at this point, there almost an infinite number of nice axes.

The number of really excellent luthiers has reached the point where they are going to bring down the price of great guitars.

Trump 2015: I have a great healthcare plan that protects pre-existing conditions!

Trump 2018: I sure hope Democrats can come up with a great healthcare plan that protects pre-existing conditions!

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump
As I predicted all along, Obamacare has been struck down as an UNCONSTITUTIONAL disaster! Now Congress must pass a STRONG law that provides GREAT healthcare and protects pre-existing conditions. Mitch and Nancy, get it done!

11:34 PM - Dec 14, 2018

Nancy can provide the perfect solution in the next few months. Medicare for all! Of course, Trump will take the credit but it will accomplish the objective of eliminating the ACA and simultaneously providing health care for all.

12
HappyWarrior  Dec 14, 2018 • 9:53:13pm

Let him gloat. The GOP can’t win on health care because they have no solutions. Just we hate ACA because of the guy who passed it.

Drumpf has now turned his 2016 campiagn promise on a bigger, better, and cheaper plan for health care inside out, turning his promise into an absolute lie. His new position is to fuck everybody he can right up the ass.

One can only hope! Since my divorce, I’ve been on COBRA. His workplace is claiming that I can only get it for 18 months, but it’s really 3 years and I have a letter from Medicare stating such. I’ve got to get that straightened out soon before the 18 months is over. It costs me quite a bit, but it’s insurance I can actually use immediately without spending a pile and then still having to meet a huge deductible before it kicks in. This is bankrupting me and I’m quickly going through all my savings. I need Medicare for all because of chronic conditions.

Would it be less expensive to switch to the ACA (assuming it survives this latest attack)? I think tomorrow may be the last day to register for it, but I’m not sure the rules when you are covered by an existing policy.

I ran into this when I was first divorced before I thought of COBRA. When I looked into it, the more affordable plans (about $350 per month) had a huge deductible (around $7500) and the more expensive plans (about $800-900 per month) had a smaller deductible (around $1000), but one could start using the services for a primary care doctor with a copay. With COBRA, I pay $589 per month and get the copays for all physicians, radiologic studies, and medications. It also kept me from going bankrupt when I ended up being admitted to the hospital this past year. It’s not sustainable, but it’s what I have for now and it’s cheaper than the ACA options.

Nope. I don’t qualify for the subsidy. I’m self-employed and trying to maintain a rental home for my kids. I ended up paying almost $10,000 in taxes last year, and I make about $50,000 a year before I write-off all the business expenses which brings my actual earnings way down. I don’t know what the heck is going on with the taxes except I have to pay my two portions for the employer portion of Medicare. It was really an eye opener realizing just how few things I can deduct now with only being able to claim one child for deduction purposes and not having the house anymore because we had to sell it. I got screwed bigly.

China’s President Xi Jinping has declared victory in his anti-graft fight, saying that the campaign to root out inherent corruption within the ruling Communist Party will continue.

Xi announced at a meeting of the party’s Politburo on Friday that the campaign had now achieved an “overwhelming victory,” state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Mustn’t forget Goldwasser.

Danziger Goldwasser (Polish: Gdańska wódka, “vodka of Gdańsk”), with Goldwasser as the registered tradename, is a strong (40% ABV) root and herbal liqueur which was produced from 1598 to 2009 in Danzig (Gdańsk). Production now takes place in Germany.[1]

The most prominent characteristic of the drink is small flakes of 23 karat gold suspended in it.[1] The beverage also includes herbs and spices such as cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, lavender, thyme, coriander and juniper, and has a syrupy texture.[2]….

….Another brand of Goldwasser, Schwabacher Goldwasser, and other sorts of food embellished with gold, are produced in the city of Schwabach near Nuremberg. Goldschläger is a Swiss cinnamon schnapps which also contains small flakes of 22 karat gold.

Zinke is out. I wonder if he knows yet..

The president said in a tweet Saturday that Zinke would leave the administration at the end of the year.

Zinke’s personal conduct and management decisions have spurred at least 15 investigations, several of which have been closed.

The most serious one, which the Interior Department’s acting inspector general referred to the Justice Department, focuses on whether the secretary used his office for personal gain in connection with a land deal he forged in Whitefish, Mont., with Halliburton Chairman David Lesar and other investors.

Goodnight, all! Lots of work to do in the morning.

Fierce Mom, when you wake up (tried to post this last night but my internet was screwing up)
I used to work in COBRA admin.Apologies if you already know this, but:
If the Qualifying Event — i.e the reason a dependent lost their coverage — is Divorce or Death, the dependent spouse &/or child has 36 months eligibility, no question about that.
Your Medicare letter is correct, but make good and sure the company shows the correct Qualifying Event on all of your COBRA paperwork, double-ditto for their COBRA admin if they outsource that function. Your Qualifying Event and eligibility dates should be prominently displayed on the original offering letter, if they’re complying with the law.
(And yeah, have that fight before the 18 months runs out. HRs have been known to screw the QE’s up, especially if they don’t use an outside admin and the internal person doesn’t deal with COBRA very often.)

Sinema will likely to be sworn in January. Kyl’s replacement will be likely seated in December.

Kyle tendered his resignation as of Dec. 31, when the Senate, I believe, will not be in session; so presumably, his appointee will have wait until the beginning of the next session on Jan. 3 to be sworn in. So if it is Martha McSally, I think the definition of “seniority” by Senate rules is determined by “previous service”, in this case, how long either Sinema or McSally served in the House…

Ah you’re correct then. My bad.

And at the same time, Ryan has pushed through a bill to give thousands more work visas to Irish college grads every year.

Breitbart is opposed:
breitbart.com

Yet despite the huge relative gain for Irish business, the E-3 giveaway legislation would only help about 5,000 older Americans retire in Ireland, presumably with their 401Ks. That lose-lose deal would transfer U.S. jobs to Irish graduates in exchange for transferring U.S. savings to Irish businesses.

Ireland’s finance minister tweeted Thursday that a major Irish airline is hiring pilots. Under the E-3 bill, young Irish pilots could be hired in the U.S., and retired American pilots can spend their savings in Irish pubs.

Multiple Irish media sources - some tweeted by Irish government officials — say the giveaway is backed by several administration officials, including Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget, and John Kelly, the outgoing chief of staff.

One Irish media outlet says Trump endorsed the E-3 extension during a St. Patrick’s Day meeting with the Irish Prime Minister in 2018.

After the meeting, Ireland’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he had helped Trump deal with a business problem facing a Trump golf course in Ireland. Varadkar told the story in a speech to Hill legislators — but later backtracked amid criticisms from Irish groups.

Thing is the GOP especially if they suffer losses in 2020 will only get more radical, homozygous, & more racist than ever. In the year of women getting elected everywhere, they actually lost women in Congress.

and if so then hopefully/likely they will also continue to shrink in size

while i care about their racism, etc i care less if they’re not in any position of power

I had heard this morning the Democrats in the House think the judge’s ruling was on thin grounds, so they may already be looking into the details of the tax and how it was written in the new Republican Tax Regulation.

yeah im just guessing - and from a tax/ accountants perspective
i’ve read it was ‘repealed’
and also that it was ‘set to zero’
so i dont actually know what’s what

and like i said, way smarter political and legal brains than mine have been following this and working on it all along

re: #146 Dr Lizardo

I agree - the GOP will be trying to cling to power with an ever-shrinking base and as that base dwindles further over the next couple of decades, they’ll become increasingly radicalized.

said better than i did below, er above, er….

They can keep their bigoted attitudes. They just need to get that attitude out of government policies and practices, take it home, and hide it in the basement. They can feed it there if they want, they just can’t let it out of the house.

that’s why i use “liberty, and justice for all” as a catch line

liberty means freedom to mostly do what you want and be left alone
justice means fairness and proportional equity in all things
for all means everyone’s included - we all put in and we all get out

any spin or twisted interpretation to exclude or gain unfair advantage is downright unamerican - it’s the pledge of allegiance. you wanna argue with that?

as an aside:
The promise for all is especially for those left out and left behind…
Not the privilege of the few…the already haves
the “privileged” dont need help - all they’re trying to do is keep more for themselves

re: #133 dangerman

im still chewing on this
and i know there are way smarter people than me - legal brains who have all kinds of good arguments

if i understand correctly, the ruling referred to the ‘effect’ of the zero penalty amount.
something abuot if there’s no effect then there’s no penalty

i think that logic alone is flawed before you get to the real legal stuff

the 2018 tax law set the tax/penalty equal to zero.
they didnt remove the penalty entirely.
if they didnt remove the penalty, and just set it to zero, it’s still there.

a tax of zero is still a tax.
lots of people dont pay income tax in a particular year.
they dont lose citizenship, rights or privileges that year
they participate in the tax system, even file tax returns
with a ‘total tax’ line amount of zero.

i could be wrong
and maybe no one thinks the way i do

That would be the precise argument against it. Zero tax is still a tax, and the rate can be set higher by any future Congress. They did not remove the tax.

I have not paid income taxes in decades, yet I have not lost my right to vote, run for office, &c. (I imagine given the chance, conservatives would correct that oversight.)

Unfortunately, Citizens United fucked that all up.

It can be fixed. Since it’s mostly about the freedom to do what you want with your money, it will continue to be a big fight.

Do they hold town hall meetings anymore?

I don’t think they want to meet people opposed to them anymore so they stay away from things like town hall meetings.

Now they hold things like phone-ins to a big group (conference call), dinners with known supporters and heavily scripted “questions and answers” with very little question. So…no answers.

They represent who voted for them. Everyone else is told to deal with it.

Yup. That’s my rep.

Boy, this article p*ssed me off. I had no idea the courts in Australia had the ability to shut down all discussion of any case. WaPo

A top cardinal’s sex-abuse conviction is huge news in Australia. But the media can’t report it there.

re: #167 retired cynic

I had no idea the courts in Australia had the ability to shut down all discussion of any case.

They don’t - they’re blocking discussion of this case because there are very similar cases outstanding against the same person, and they want to avoid the criminal process from being tainted.

However, this is just bollocks. When it comes to investigating child abuse, the Catholic church has a deliberate policy of doing nothing for as long as possible, and hoping that everyone involved will die of old age.

Which is another way that justice can be denied.

Conservative Texas Judge Thinks He Can Murder Obamacare All By Himself. (Wonkette, a law-splainer):

Today, as we hope you know, is the last day to sign up for insurance through the Affordable Care Act (GO DO THAT NOW if you have not already and need to! Click here!). Last night, in a move which will affect absolutely nothing right now, a Bush-appointed conservative judge in Texas ruled Obamacare “unconstitutional.” More specifically, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor of Fort Worth, TX, declared the individual mandate unconstitutional, and found that the rest of the ACA needed to go as well because everything in it is “inseverable” from the mandate and therefore “invalid.”

This will be swiftly appealed, and even Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to the ruling by saying “We expect this ruling will be appealed to the Supreme Court. Pending the appeal process, the law remains in place.

As Robin reminds in the article, five of the nine Supreme Court justices have already ruled in favour of the law.

She was, but then she moved in District 6, rented a home to show she lived there, and ran for city council. She won. After that, a bunch of her supporters realized that she was screwing them on a park situation. I just laughed at them.
