Awesome tune. Takes a rare type of talent to be so good for so long.

You know, I’m beginning to envy Britain. The worst they have to deal with is incompetent leadership and a looming economic crisis. May’s an utter moron, but so far there’s no indication that she’s Vlad’s puppet.

He’s just crazy enough to do it. Let’s see what the Pentagon would think about that. Although a military coup wouldn’t be much of an improvement.

It’s a deceptively simple-looking video. There’s a lot going on, between the makeup, costuming, editing and coreography that just kind of pops in and out. This will probably take multiple viewing to catch it all. Very subtle and stylish.

Real good tune, too. Yay, Macca!

re: #259 Hecuba’s daughter

Sorry that my context was unclear — I meant most red states. There are a few Republican states that are not hostile to the ACA, but in general, it is the Republicans who are trying to destroy health care for average Americans.

Our state’s Unicameral sure is. That said, in the midterm elections the referendum to expand Medicaid and join the ACA was passed overwhelmingly by the voters.

The plan from the GOP here seems to be to ignore the referendum when the Unicameral opens for business.

re: #295 Jay C

Is that really accurate? I thought the ERA had a time-limit for ratification, which expired many years ago.

The time limit is not in the proposed amendment, but in a separate piece of legislation which could be repealed. Repeal that and the ERA is back on.

re: #303 Sionainn, Fierce Mother

I make too much money to qualify for subsidies and can’t afford a plan without a huge deductible that I couldn’t meet. I am able to be on COBRA with my ex-husband’s work for three years. I have now passed year one. I am screwed when COBRA runs out.

And the GOP plan is also to privatise Tricare and the VA.

Every person treated by the VA has a preëxisting condition. My wife and I would be left uninsurable.

I’m getting a bad bad feeling that something is going to happen to take Trump and Pence out. Trump is hell bent on shutting down the government and that’s going to piss a lot of people off. Especially the Secret Service agents who will have to watch him without being paid.

Every day that brings us closer to a Democratic House is going to push Fearless Feeder further into meltdown mode. I got a feeling that a lot of career military officers are getting tempted to openly rebel against him. It’s going to get very ugly.

Commerce City, Colorado police (suburb of Denver) have solved a cold case murder from 1996. They determined the murder fled to Mexico, where he lived under an assumed name, was jailed there on a different charge, then after leaving jail was himself murdered in Ciudad Juarez in 2010.

Of course he will have to shuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic. Nobody with any sense is going to join this mess. We better pay attention to the vice, acting-and otherwise whoever is the highest ranked person in the Civil Service for their agency. Because they will be the ones running the joint. And nobody can handle two agencies at all, let alone well.

I have a feeling a few more Cabinet Officers are going to be beating feet out of this Administration. Nobody wants to be left holding the smelly bag of Trump or doing things they simply cannot do.

Going through my regional newspaper for local news. Not much happening around here.

- Business fire in Scottsbluff last night.
- Torrington woman arrested on charges of drug possession after the Postal Inspection Service intercepted a package from overseas with an obscure Schedule 2 opioid. After the Torrington (Wyo.) Police searched her house, they found a bunch of the drug.
- Two Scottsbluff people (a woman and her son) were arrested for selling cannabidiol from their store after being warned by the Scottsbluff Police Department. (That is a major felony here.) She is out on bond but her son remains jailed. They intend on turning their trial into a referendum on the illegality of CBD in Nebraska. (She was formerly addicted to opiods after pain treatment, and with new pain her son convinced her to try CBD.) There is a long article at the link about them and the issue of CDB here (with our Attorney General on the warpath about CBD).

He’s just not very good at this Presidenting thing, is he?

The “experts” in their fields are all gone, unless you count bankers like Mnuchin and Ross as experts. Ross is certainly involved with money laundering through his ties to a certain Russian controlled bank in a small Mediterranean island and Mnuchin is so dirty you want to take a shower every time you see his picture.

Coloradans can now change their gender identity on their birth certificates (KMGH Channel 7 Denver)

DENVER — The Colorado Department of Health and the Environment has approved a major change to the way state birth certificates work.

During its monthly meeting on Wednesday, the board voted to allow more identifying options for birth certificates. There will now be four options: male, female, X and intersex.

The move follows a state change on Nov. 30 to driver’s licenses and identification cards that added the third option of “X” for a person’s sex.

When a child is born, their birth certificate will only have three options: male, female and intersex. “X” is left out since it is not a biological characteristic, said Chris Wells with the department of helath and environment. It will be available for adults who want to amend their birth certificates.

The board of health also approved simplifying the process to change the gender identity on a birth certificate. Under current requirements, a person must undergo gender reassignment surgery and prove it to a judge in order to qualify for the change to their birth certificate.

This is another story about the Treasury Department, but don’t worry, it’s not boring. (Honest! Was the story about the Treasury Department un-sanctioning Paul Manafort’s Russian oligarch sugar daddy boring? NOPE.)

Military Times is speculating that Blackwater will be going into Afghanistan to replace people Trump wants to pull out.

militarytimes.com

Remember, James Mattis had a hand in this.

If Blackwater returns, it would be the return of a private security contractor that was banned from Iraq, but re-branded and never really went away. By 2016 Blackwater had been re-branded several times and was known at the time as Constellis Group, when it was purchased by the Apollo Holdings Group. Reuters reported earlier this year that Apollo had put Constellis up for sale, but in June the sale was put on hold.

Blackwater’s founder and former CEO Erik Prince has courted President Donald Trump’s administration since he took office with the idea that the now 17-year Afghan War will never be won by a traditional military campaign. Prince has also argued that the logistical footprint required to support that now multi-trillion dollar endeavor has become too burdensome. Over the summer and into this fall Prince has engaged heavily with the media to promote the privatization; particularly as the Trump administration’s new South Asia Strategy, which was crafted with Mattis, passed the one-year mark.

Collude engage in synergy conspire.

Collusion is the conservative misnaming to claim “it’s not a crime.” Conspiracy is a crime.

Just as I argued in the past the press should use the term “lie” to describe lies, the term “conspire” should be used to describe conspiracy. Words matter.

Yes, I bet neighboring states have a bug up their ass over that.

Here when Colorado legalised cannabis, the state proposed closing all unpaved roads between Nebraska and Colorado. (There are only nine paved roads between the states.)

The Unicameral wanted to make it legal for civilians to patrol armed along the state line looking for people smuggling. (It’s not like anyone ever brought maryane into Nebraska before.)

Ranchers and farmers with property on both sides of the state line went ballistic, noting closing unpaved roads would be a massive headache for them to run their farms and ranches.

The legislature dropped that idea, and instead, county sheriffs in the border counties set up “safety checkpoints” on the paved roads to look for “seatbelt violations” and such (read maryjane).

Isn’t the true problem that Trump should have been incarcerated years ago? His financial empire was based on money laundering and other illegal activities; but no one seems interested in investigating financial fraud because it is very complicated and expensive to uncover. Trump never should have gotten close to public office but our criminal justice system is very inadequate in investigating white collar crime or providing sufficient penalties to deter these activities.

In watching the various “flipper” and “fixer upper” TV shows, one of their common traits is training the public on what the latest fad may be, so that the viewers will run out and spend lots of money at Lowe’s etc.

Part of the process is teaching the viewers to all use the same language. One of the most popular phrases is “open concept.”

The problem is… the shows never discuss the problems with “open concept”, and why rooms were invented in the first place.

As noted by some commentators (including Kate) recently, public spaces are getting louder and louder in part because now they are just one big open room with lots of hard surfaces.

The reason “open concept” is pushed so hard by the flippers is because Americans are being inundated by images of McMansions and their oversized nature, but the flippers are flipping small houses.

How to make a small house not feel like a let-down after viewing all those 5000 sqft McMansions?

Tear down the walls so you get one big room. Of course, you only get one big room under the whole roof, in those flipped bungalows.

I don’t (though there are premium channels for advert free porn).

The idea of the scam is the person claims they will post a side-by-side video of the porn you were watching with your camera recording what you were doing at the time.

Unless my camera can film through electrical tape over it, I don’t think that would work. And I don’t think you can post video to LGF.

It’s an overwrought (emphasis on “wrought”) mess… but will seem impressive enough… so to get the feeling of grandiose size the flippers (and current new house builders) get rid of walls so one has just one big room in your house.

A girlfriend from New Jersey was looking at a new housing development on the outskirts of Phoenix and commented “Are those houses or shopping malls?”

Then it occurred to me: this is what they are after.

Your own private shopping mall, downstairs the furniture showroom, cooking and housewares emporium, the den is the electronics store, upstairs the gallery of shops: bath accessories, shoe store, toy store, sporting goods store.

With an auto showroom in the garage and driveway, of course…

Why It Mattered (and Still Matters) that Flynn Continued to Hide His True Relationship with Turkey (emptywheel, more at the link):

The guy who managed the first steps of the process that led to Trump announcing a withdrawal of troops from Syria yesterday was hiding secret ties to both Russia and Turkey when that process started. That’s one of the reasons why it matters that Mike Flynn lied about his relationship with Turkey for so long. It means that both Russia and Turkey have always known Flynn and Trump were vulnerable because they were hiding lies about their ties with those countries.

In this post, I noted that while the work Flynn did as an unregistered foreign agent for Turkey reportedly ended not long after election day (though WSJ reported that he and his spawn met with representatives of Turkey in mid-December to speak further about Fethullah Gulen), that relationship with Turkey would remain unregistered — that is, Flynn would continue to lie about the true nature of it — all the way through his guilty plea on December 1, 2017. For some reason, virtually everyone reporting on Flynn is getting this wrong, claiming that his March 7, 2017 registration — the one he has pled guilty to lying on — constitutes full disclosure about his ties to Turkey. It did not, because it hid that he was working, knowingly, for Turkey.

Recommend read:

The Curse of an Open Floor Plan

On HGTV shows like Fixer-Upper and Property Brothers, almost every renovation involves removing walls to facilitate open-concept living. Families celebrate their future ability to oversee the kids in the living room from the kitchen, or to watch television from the sink, believing such split duties will constitute comfort and liberation. Like every dream to “have it all,” this one too is a fantasy. (In fact, the rise of the phrase “open-concept” offers its own testimony to the role that televised fancy has played in the drive to combine spaces together. It started as a distinctly Canadian name for “open-plan,” but since some of the most popular HGTV shows were filmed in Canada, the term spread in the United States. Architecture’s ideas are always best when imagined rather than built.)

Way back in the ’60s and early ’70s, there was a push in education for the “open classroom” in elementary school, where instead of segregating kids by age group or school grade in separate rooms the school would have “pods” or “zones” separated by partitions. The theory was it would be easier to move kids around based on their skill level, and easier to combine classes when appropriate.

The creators of said concept had apparently never worked with school-age children, because open classrooms were for the most part a disaster. Too much noise, too many distractions, and too easy for teachers to lose track of a wondering kid who might find another pod’s lesson more interesting than his or her own.

Because I’m sure up until now no-one has ever brought maryjane into Nebraska!//

The only companies that need to fear a wingnut boycott are products aimed at old and/or crazy people.

RW have been successful in the past, remember GHW Bush calling for a boycott of Warner Brothers over Cop Killer or what happened to the Dixie Chicks.

I’m going to bed. This day has been just stupid. The idiot in the WH is just incompetent, and there’s not much we can do about it, except whine.

I hate whining. It’s not in my nature, but if the rest of the Government won’t act, what can we do? Scream, I suppose, but we are casting it into the air.

What I want to do is kick Government balls, at all levels, so hard they retract up the inguinal canals of everyone who has been kicked, to get their attention. And tell them to STOP THIS SHIT.

Night all, the craziness is taking its toll.

lawhawk  Dec 21, 2018 • 6:20:14am

He’s refusing to fill positions in every federal agency, including DHS and DOD.

This is sabotage. It’s not merely trying to reduce the size of government. He’s making it impossible to do that because there’s no one in positions to oversee an orderly reduction.

It sows chaos and undermines functioning government. That’s the point, and the GOP are cheering on flamethrowers regardless of the damage.

Yes — BUT not when it came to the State Department or Department of Defense. Every step taken in the past had a valid strategic interest that was designed to benefit this county, even when it upended decades of practice, such as Kissinger and Nixon’s opening to China. Trump Says A Government Shutdown Would ‘Last For A Very Long Time’ (goes to Huffington Post, caution for auto-play video):

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a midnight deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump said Friday a closure would drag on “for a very long time” and he tried to build the case that congressional Democrats would bear responsibility if there’s no deal over his demand for U.S.-Mexico border wall money.

Only a week ago, Trump said he would be “proud” to shut down the government, which Republicans now control, in the name of border security. “I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down,” he asserted.

But with the hours dwindling before the midnight deadline, Trump sought to reframe the debate and make Democrats the holdouts to settling an impasse that threatens hundreds of thousands of federal workers on the eve of the end-of-the-year holidays.

My plan to take a picture of myself flipping off Mar-a-Lago a couple of days ago went awry. Going up A1A I saw road signs saying that you couldn’t go north on A1A starting today because the Asshole will be in residence. Road still open, so I thought OK, here is my chance. The side of Mar-a-Lago that faces A1A is not labeled, so must be a side entrance. By the time I looked at Google Maps again, it said I had passed it, so I had to settle off for flipping the bird in the general direction behind me.

I saw a shitload of Mansions, particularly on the beach side of A1A, wondering where all of this money came from for all of these people. The main purpose of driving A1A was to visit a modest mansion by the 6th richest man in America at the time (Henry Flagler), built as an engagement/wedding present for his third wife. Well worth the visit if you like that sort of thing.

The youngsters will take it in stride. Some adults, though, cannot.

Here in China, a couple of middle school teachers — one male, one female — asked their female students to log their periods on a chart in their classrooms. It sounds creepy, but there is a real phobia about periods in China. No one traditionally ever talked about them. Then, during the 2016 Olympics, a Chinese swimmer admitted on camera that she was on her period and it may have contributed to her not doing as well as usual. She also opened the eyes of Chinese women to the possibility of using tampons, which until then were largely mistrusted. So, charting the students’ periods makes a formerly mysterious and shameful bodily function into something more normal and acceptable.

Not sure how it would play in the USA, though.

One even wrote a story for an assignment about her sitting in class one day, and unbeknownst to her, she had leaked fluid and stained her white dress. The Berlin Wall was meant to keep a population in, not to keep people out. It required over 40,000 Soviet soldiers to man it, complete with barbed wire, mines, etc., and it still failed to stop East Germans from escaping to the West - often at terrible cost in loss of life.

*We* knew, but 63 million voters did not, or did not care. And the GOP may have known, but also did not care. It’s those two facts that bring me even more despair.

I told myself in 2016 that things would have to get a whole lot worse before they could even start to get better…and they are still getting worse.

There’s a Secret Sticker on Every Label of Sailor Jerry Rum (Goes to Fortune, more at the link):

If you’re a regular Sailor Jerry drinker, there’s a good chance you’ve been accidentally throwing out a collectible sticker every time you finish a bottle of the rum.

The key is taking off the label. Behind the traditional label of every bottle, the brand has placed a clear collectible sticker featuring the art of famous tattoo artist Normal Collins aka “Sailor Jerry.”

Roughly five or six different designs are in rotation at any given time, and they change things up fairly regularly, which makes the stickers pretty collectible.

Just back from grocery shopping.

I almost had the entire side of my Rabbit crunched. I was coming up to an intersection and as I was moving right and going up the right hand lane, a guy in a beat to hell Honda Civic decided he was in the wrong lane and just started to come over right at about the front fender of my car. I laid on the horn but he was still moving. I’m scuffing the curb on the passenger side and and watching his front fender inch closer and closer in my side window. He finally stopped and it must have been about a 1/16th inch between us.

I gave him some shit about watching what he was doing and he told me to “shut the fuck up, I didn’t hit you”

I said yeah, how close were you and I scrubbed my tires and hub caps on the curb.

Go fuck yourself he yells at me. People.

My heart still hasn’t calmed down. Phew…that was close.

Obamacare continues to function pretty well despite every effort made by the GOP to damage and kill it. A surge of last week signups brought 2018 registrations up to only 4% off last years, not bad considering that the individual mandate was repealed and the Administration spent no money on advertising. Something that didn’t happen was a mass abandonment of the exchanges (remember last year when there was fear some counties wouldn’t have any policies to choose from? Didn’t happen this year!) or a huge spike in premiums. And of course several states’ voters voted to expand Medicaid because their GOP governments refuse to. Turns out that the ACA was a pretty good law considering how well its held up under all the attacks launched against it!

re: #395 makeitstop

That’s the point. They wanted a saboteur. They wanted to watch it burn down. Some of them think this is the best way to get more tax cuts, or end social programs (that many of them rely on!) because it will stop others (read: nonwhites) from using.

The border wall is a proxy for the white nationalism that Trump fronts.

The sabotage of functioning govt is something the GOP has been engaging in for years, but has taken on a new desperation under Trump, as he’s actually going ahead with this insanity.

There aren’t any rational GOPers willing to stand up and stop this nonsense because the party is led increasingly by the very extremists who want this to happen.

Russia timed their intervention into American politics perfectly - capitalizing on a primed GOP that is nativist, inward looking, and wholly ignorant of world events, foreign policy, all while we see right wing extremism is the Putin agenda worldwide.

It is because people don’t care about truth and actual facts.

They want to make a point and that is all it is, whether the point is supported or not.

They want what they ‘know’ to be right…even if wrong.

Facing a midnight deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump said Friday a closure would drag on “for a very long time” and he tried to build the case that congressional Democrats would bear responsibility if there’s no deal over his demand for U.S.-Mexico border wall money.

Motherfucker, we have you on video saying you’d take the mantle. I really do hope Congress just says fuck it, and overrides his veto on a clean CR. It’s time to neuter this moron.

The Senate requires 60 votes — so he does need some Democrats. And he won’t get them.

Nancy was originally confident that he didn’t have the votes in the House — but they caved. Maybe this is the time that we will get comprehensive immigration reform, once she is Speaker.

I think one reason they caved was so they could “stick it to Nancy”.

Yet, there’s a thriving business for those wines… among folks from the Caribbean. Some will use it for baking (okay, I get that), or for dessert toppings (again, I get that), but to drink straight up?

A partial shutdown ends non-essential travel. The President traveling to Florida is non-essential, regardless of what he thinks about it.

He’ll just issue and executive order and presto! Florida here he comes.

Soon we will be hearing about how he sacrificed his Christmas to defend America’s Border Safety…

He saved Christmas and secured the Border at the same time.

Not true. The president traveling is essential, regardless of the circumstances and who is in the office.

We can agree that he shouldn’t do it, but this is Trump and GOP we’re talking about. They disregard what they should or shouldn’t do and care about only enriching themselves and their cronies.

From the wapo…I’m not gonna link on this phone…

The president has complained to aides about how unfair it is that he is blamed for the market’s slide and for growing unease about an economic slowdown in the months to come

Selfish and clueless prick
He caused it and yet it’s unfair
Screw the rest of the country eating the actual market losses, it’s all about him

He’s only responsible when the market goes up. Why can’t people see that?

Just got a call from the state water lab asking where our annual nitrate water test is, as they mailed it two weeks ago.

“I didn’t get a test kit.”

They say they’ll mail out another one right away, and I’d better get it in the mail by Wednesday or else.

Why am I doing this for free? Why does half the state government have my home telephone number?

Why are you doing this at all? They voted you out! Let the Nazi do it.

There’s now a hilarious GoFundMe to build escalators over Trump’s border wall (Mashable)

The money actually goes to RAICES.

And on the GoFundMe to steal money fund a wall, someone put in “Mexico-$0”

He claimed all the credit for it rising, he gets the blame for it falling.

That’s why presidents usually don’t weigh in on the market.

Just reading on ESPN on how Carolina Panther’s Eric Reid has been chosen seven times for the HFL’s “random” drug testing program.

Which is highly unusual.

So, the thinking is he is being targeted by the NFL because he stood up to the NFL and Trump by joining in with Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling during the National Anthem protest.

The NFLPA (player’s union) is thinking since Reid filed a grievance with the NFL they are taking it out on him. The NFL says it has no responsibility in who is chosen and how often because it is random and handled by an outside agency.

Yeah right. Can you say Trump…who is probably pushing this?

I think that’s great because it’s nothing that women and men should be afraid to talk about and it shouldn’t be embarrassing.

In that regard, my first period happened when I was at junior high school and I had no idea what had happened or why. I never lived it down, at least in my mind.
