What astonishes me is that the markets fell off a cliff when the Fed announced the rate hike earlier this week. It wasn’t like it was some sort of secret that they were almost certain to do it.

Correction: 10%
Bear market: 20% over 2 month period across multiple indices.

There’s been a couple of corrections since midyear. The current one seems to have a different feel to it, and for it to become a bear market, we’d probably have go to 20,660 or by end of next month.

Enjoy it or hate it (and I’m guessing the latter isn’t much of a minority position), the GOP are probably going to try to pull all the stops out to try to pass the “Wall Budget” before adjourning - any opposition notwithstanding. Flake and Corker are obvious NFLTG, but the rest of them probably don’t want to have to spend their holiday break listening to the wingnuts roast them over the stupid fucking Wall. Going home with a “win” for President Big Damn Hero is a positive for Flyover Country. And beside, they (most of them) will just have to come back and start all over again in January.
Which, Dem House aside, is still going to be Mitch McConnell’s private shitshow over on the EastNorth Side.

I’m not Jewish, and I don’t assume everyone I encounter is Jewish, so I say Happy Holidays.

Maybe that’s just because I live and work in NYC metro, and I’m going to come across people from every kind of religious background and experience… but it’s not disrespectful to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, especially when most people aren’t religiously Christian and see it as a secular holiday.

The commercialization means the so-called war is even more BS, especially since commercial interests start spewing Christmas stuff beginning around…. checking calendar December 26 of the prior year, and in earnest from Labor Day forward.

No expert on SC politics (and will be glad to be proved wrong here), but ISTR that Roy Moore got the GOP nom in Alabama because he was already a big player in the state (Ten Commandments and all) and had a “base” hopped up to see him run. AFAIK, the SC GOP has a much tighter handle on who they are likely to bring forward to nominate and (it being SC). elect.

Or that the majority of opioids are coming via ports of entry and legal procurement. Or that the illegal source of opioids is coming from China in small quantity shipments that are easily distributed by mail.

Mexico isn’t the cause, or solution to, the opioid crisis. And the wall certainly wont solve it, when Purdue and other pharma companies repeatedly were caught lying about how addictive their new opioids were.

So, for those playing the home game, the DHS wasted millions on wall prototypes that Trump has now totally forgotten about in order to bullshit voters into believing that all he wants is steel slates…you know, after spending the better part of three years insisting it would be a concrete structure that would be impossible to climb over or tunnel beneath.

So are those steel piles that will be driven into the ground? That makes them something like 80+ feet long, depending on how deep they have to be driven and assuming ground conditions are such that they can be driven at all. Then welders will come along to put the points on. I think that raises the cost around 10 times higher than Trump claims, at a minimum.

When I was a little kid—so like 60 years ago—my Mom would buy Christmas cards in boxes with stacks of four different kinds. Only one would say “Merry Christmas”. A U.S. increasingly hostile to immigration, as well as escalating living costs, have prompted an exodus of Indian technology workers to Canada, where open tech positions are forecast to reach 200,000 by 2020. Key destinations include Toronto, which plays host to artificial intelligence (AI) development efforts, along with startups like the popular Wattpad storytelling platform. Other attractive Canadian AI centers include Ottawa, home to the Shopify e-commerce platform, and Montreal, where the deep learning Element AI laboratory is located. To become more competitive in emerging tech industries, Canada has modified its permanent and temporary immigrant programs, with tech-skilled applicants in the former program receiving additional perks. The number of Indian nationals applying for permanent Canadian residency boomed between 2016 and 2017—up by 83% for those entering under a federal skills program, 122% for those selected by provinces to fill specific vacancies, and 538% for those who entered based on work experience.

Yes, that’s true. The Maginot Line was effective in deterring the German Army - so much so that they did an end run around it, turned around and attacked it from the rear, and some fortresses still held out for over a month after Paris fell. But the border wall won’t even be as effective as that, let alone the fact that it won’t completely seal off the border.

Ironically, the French Army’s defense in depth wasn’t actually that bad. The problem was that they committed their best units to a fight on the wrong front, and put their weakest units at the hinge. If the 1st French Army had been held on the border and been available to counterattack against the bridgeheads once the aerial assault had failed, it probably would have been game over for the Germans. But as mentioned upthread, the French believed the Ardennes were impassable, and ignored intelligence reports suggesting that the Germans were coming that way.

Not to mention the biggest problem with the Maginot Line was that it stopped at the Belgian border: and the French didn’t complete it because:
1) They didn’t want to spend the money, and
2) They didn’t want to offend the Belgians by fortifying their “peaceful” border, so they went with Plan B; i.e. wait til the Germans attacked through Belgium, then rush in with an armored force.

Would have worked, too, maybe: except the Belgians also abandoned the Ardennes sector. Ooops….

Originally from Ohio of course he was out at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in the mid 60s and like it. So in the 70s he moved his family there. He is retired and lives south of Tucson. I also have two nieces from his family out there. And, I have two nieces from my wingnut oldest brother in the Phoenix area. All Ohio roots.

I don’t talk about Mexicans with many of them. Why? Because they are Ohioans that moved to Arizona and complain about a group of people that have lived in that area forever.

Even being a hot shot 17-year-old who was placing in the top third in most of the races I competed in (I trained with Tommy Moe and Daron Rahlves, I had a French coach from Chamonix take me under his wing when I was 14) I knew I wasn’t as good as your Lindsey Vonns and Ted Ligetys of today. And the racing life started to make skiing less fun for me, and I could never abide by that because since I was a little kid I’ve know skiing as one of the funnest fucking things ever.

If you read the article, what she’s trying to do is figure out how to continue to take care of herself before she actually starts. She can’t quite do the same routine she used to do. Just as she told us about the orientation training that only involved business, she’s letting us know the other side.

We can admire that. It will soon be used against her though.

It will be made a sign of weakness and she isn’t ready for prime time. That is how it works in politics with a dedicated right thinking media.

She’ll handle it. But being honest also means opening up for attacks. She will learn that.
