Mattis resignation, Trump’s big Christmas present to Putin with the withdrawal from Syria and the removal of sanctions from Russal, and RBG’s health are all making me increasingly nervous about our future. If RBG is replaced, the ACA is dead, Trump’s immigration policy will be upheld, Roe v Wade will be overturned. Darkness is falling over the land.

A lot of those people were given the choice of getting shot or drinking poison.

And quite a few were kids and elderly people too debilitated to leave.

And the entire suicide scenario occurred after they’d all been terrorized for months with the “White Night” loyalty tests that involved drinking “poison” while exhausted, malnourished, and sleep deprived, *and* everyone was convinced they’d all be killed because of the assassination of Congressman Ryan.

I ain’t mad, but…it’s bad mojo conjuring with Jonestown. The apocryphal “they all just obeyed” story is comforting pap compared to what happened, and our current scenario has a bunch of disturbing resemblances to the actual Jonestown mass murder/mass suicide. If shit goes wrong, it’s not going to be the loyal soldiers jumping on swords; this is a pyramid scheme of narcissists, and narcissists tend to try and punish and annihilate anyone that made them feel shamed or disappointed.

You may be right — we will have to wait to learn how this eventually plays out. When you are in the midst of a crisis, you cannot see what the resolution will be. As the film Charlie Wilson’s War said at the end, we’ll see.

A high-rise window washers rig, with two looped canvas straps, attached by PVC pipes over the points and raised from the south side of the wall could allow any number of people to descend to the other side.

Hmmm… it seems that whatever wall was built, it would need to be manned full time by real people. All two thousand miles of it. Forever. That would be expensive wouldn’t it?

Smart boy!

Oh, and there’s this:

“(CNN)A bill that would ban the most common abortion method used in the second trimester of pregnancy was signed into law Friday by Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Senate Bill 145 prohibits the dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedure, in which the cervix is dilated and the contents of the uterus extracted. Though there is no exception in the law in cases of rape or incest, there is one if the mother’s life is at risk.

Any abortion provider who defies this law could face fourth-degree felony charges, including prison time and fines.

The Republican governor’s decision to sign off on this legislation sparked immediate backlash from abortion rights advocates.”

I’m going to throw up and go to bed. Kasich is a Republican moderate? A moderate what? A moderate Nazi? A moderate misogynist?

Fuck him right up the asshole.

I’m out. Good night, all.

Huge pot recall ordered after lab is caught falsifying reports

Nearly 850 batches — tens of thousands of pounds of flower, edibles and marijuana products — will have to be returned and either destroyed or retested.

Investigators from the bureau of cannabis control conducted a surprise inspection of Sacramento based Sequoia Analytical Labs on November 27 and found the lab’s director Marc Foster had been falsifying reports since July.

Not a single batch of marijuana was tested for 22 known pesticides.

I’d wager the President sacking the chairman of the Fed would pretty much tank the markets. Meanwhile, nutjobs like Ron Paul are advocating abolishing the Fed entirely. If Trump catches wind of that, it’s anyone’s guess what might happen.

I’m not sure the President can fire members of the Federal Reserve Board. I think it’s part of their separation from political interference

I’m so glad that I have my 401k halfway in cash now. I don’t really have a good explanation why I haven’t been ALL cash for at least the past 6 months…

the only reason I haven’t is because for much of the last 6 months, I would have been sitting on the sidelines watching bitterly as Berkshire went from 195 to 220, amongst other things. There just isn’t any way to time the market. I tried a couple months ago when I saw a correction on the way to go into stocks that pay solid dividends. Regardless of how bad things get, I’m pretty sure that JNJ, BRK, KO, T, ABBV and a few others will still be there, still paying dividends, still owning real stuff, which means if we get to the point where they’re out of business, we’ll all be running around shouting “aim for the head!” to each other, and trying to rebuild civilization.

It never has, because until 45 no president has wanted to challenge the independence of the Federal Reserve from political influence. The Fed chair would have to be grossly incompetent, negligent or corrupt to warrant such an action, and Powell is none of those. The Fed is doing what the Fed does. It’s Trump himself who’s tanking the economy.

Right wing Twitter numpties seem absolutely delighted that Trump wants to shut down the government to get taxpayers to pay for his wall that Mexico was supposed to be paying for. I’m waiting for Trump’s inevitable betrayal of their fondest desires once he realizes he can’t get what he wants, and caves to reality. Should happen any day now, and there will be howls of indignation until the next shiny object gets their attention.

The only reason he’ll cave is that he wants to golf. And that might be difficult as long as the shutdown continues.

This is one hell of an essay at Slate: The Year of the Old Boys

The Old Boy is immensely fortunate, but his core drive is greed. He has power and wealth, but it’s always less than he thinks he deserves. He’s bratty and cross and past his prime. He doesn’t feel good. He’s distant from conventional masculine markers in ways a suit usually helps to mask. His defining features are a puffy softness and a basic, uncultured greed that’s fed by status symbols. The Old Boy has a vile temper and makes others responsible for his moods. But he has allies.

The only thing the Old Boy hates more than being told no is being questioned. He is both fussy and smug—think of Paul Manafort seething, arms crossed, as he stared at underling Rick Gates in court, or Sen. Lindsey Graham theatrically yelling “This is hell” about a hearing process his own party devised.

The Old Boy is so essentially dishonest that his lies seem almost innocent. An Old Boy lies fluently and to your face, and he will explode in rage if you point this out to him not because you’re wrong (this is key) but because you don’t matter and neither does the truth; an Old Boy gets to say and do what he likes. The Old Boy recognizes some authorities. He smiles at those he considers fellow Boys—there’s a faintly embarrassing abjection to this performance when it happens. (See Kavanaugh bowing and scraping to Trump when Trump introduced him as his nominee, or how solicitously Trump acts around Vladimir Putin.)

The flip side is that the Old Boy considers his mere presence a gift to those he sees as his inferiors. As a result, any honor conferred upon him is no more than his due. So yes, he lies, but only because that’s what a blinkered world requires in order for him to get what he is owed. To bring about the correct outcome, he gets to lie, and you get to believe it. That’s your privilege.

That’s what the “liberal media” is gearing up to do: argue if the DNC would just give Donny the money for his steel slats, then the shutdown will end and everybody will be happy.

To me, a wall is a 1950’s solution. They think that if they take that path, people would stop trying to seek asylum, trying to cross, or whatever they think the wall would prevent. All it would do is deter the poorest and most desperate from coming here. But they would still come and hope for an opening, or stay in Mexico until Mexico itself takes people across to relieve the pressure on them. Personally, I think we should have an NAU (A North/Central American Union). We would be able to extend American prosperity to them, and they in turn could come up for temporary work or whatever. But no, brown people means more than orderly and humane handling of people. But ask the EU how much money they have saved in border controls, in unemployment as people can seek jobs elsewhere, in being able to have a common security and legal framework that everyone can understand.

I hadn’t heard this story at all, there has been so much going on.

Roger Stone Adds Shilling for the Chinese to His List of Sins, Washington Monthly.

The whole episode is bizarre enough on its own, but it’s even more bananas because Stone and Nunberg were engaged in this behavior at a time when they were both under intense investigation and probably subject to surveillance. Under those circumstances, why would they embark on a crazy plan to do the bidding of Xi Jinping and try to get a Chinese dissident seeking asylum extradited?

That they managed to turn it into an opportunity to destroy Bannon’s reputation on the right is just gravy.

This Russiagate story just keeps getting better and better.

And think how long it would take to build, even assuming its buildable, given the inevitable construction delays due to weather, materials, what have you. By the time its finished, there would be homemade drones flying over the thing at the very least in areas that are poorly monitored or managed.

Far better (and cheaper) would be to invest in Central American development and democratization, let anyone with a good character in (this was our 1890’s policy) and update our vastly contradictory and racist immigration laws so that coming here is affordable, staying here easy to meet with good character, and a path to citizenship clear and rock solid to those who qualify.

Yikes that New York Times article is telling how out of control Trump is.

He is isolating himself. He can’t work with his own staff. He thinks he is the smartest person anywhere and he is getting paranoid thinking people are watching him too closely.

If we had a true United States Congress instead of a Russian influenced Senate there would already be calls for his ouster.

He’s gonna blow within days.

This shutdown is going to harder politically on him than anyone because he is going to get hammered.

I think we need to think about one of the other reasons Trump wants that wall.

It is something that will last past his presidency. Trump most likely thinks it will be a symbol of his “power” as a president that will be there as a reminder of Trump.

It is a gift to his own ego. His own monument.

It doesn’t need to work. It just needs to be.
