re: #315 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Well, the Republicans’ overcrowded 2016 field (17? 18?) spelled disaster all right, but just for everybody else.

The hilarity of all this is that the same nuts now arguing that the field is “too crowded” are the same ones who spent the past 2 years arguing the reason why Donny won is because Hillary seemed as if she was “anointed” due to a small Dem field.

Most are not even going to bother invoking the MBF, they’re going to straight-up argue that the Dems are wrong for not giving Donny the $5B, arguing that it’s better to give the screaming child what he demands. Look for one or more to even suggest that the Dems are wrong for not trading the wall money for something they want, saying that that’s how you “negotiate.”

Theoretically the Dems could offer what they offered at the beginning of the year: DACA protection, but this time in exchange for far less money than their original offer — and also comprehensive immigration reform. But there isn’t sufficient time to draft a detailed law before Thursday — and you cannot rely on any promise from Trump or the Senate Republicans to negotiate in good faith next year. You certainly cannot rely on Trump to keep any promise he makes on anything for more than 5 minutes.

The Democrats were willing to trade wall money for protection for dreamers, and everytime they thought they had a deal with Trump, Kelly would bring in congressional hardliners to talk him out of it.

17
Targetpractice  Dec 22, 2018 • 10:17:51pm

Smartest thing the Dems can do is simply not “negotiate,” but instead hold to their concession of $1.6B for border security on the understanding none of that money can go towards Trump’s vanity project. That bill passed the Senate with unanimous consent, and would have passed in the House if Donny hadn’t yanked Ryan’s chain. So what they have is a bipartisan bill that was guaranteed passage on Wednesday versus a totally partisan bill that simply cannot find the votes to win passage.

Donny declared he’d take responsibility for a shutdown, and then engineered the shutdown by threatening the veto of the Senate CR. Attempts to spin that by saying Schumer should allow the House bill a vote are ridiculous.

On January the third, the new House comes in. They will have the purse strings. Why would the Dems not let the shutdown go until then? The shutdown sucks for obvious reasons, but Drumpf chose a really shitty time to do it. Which is not surprising, because he’s Dog’s own fool. He really doesn’t understand how any of this works.

Drumpf would lose all leverage and the incoming HoR would have it all. This is just Drumpf at his testosterone fueled worst. Which, for the Dems, is an absolute bonus. They will be the heroes of this standoff. They will quickly pass a budget and send it to Drumpf.

What are his choices then? By January the sixth, when Pelosi will absolutely have a funding bill going to the WH (it’s already in her pocket), the shutdown will really start to bite, and the Dow will be at around 20,000.

I’ve never seen a POTUS this stupid.

Targetpractice  Dec 22, 2018 • 10:50:59pm

I should clarify that the moment the DNC starts trying to get something for that $5B, then Trump has effectively won and the DNC are just negotiating the terms of their surrender. The press will eviscerate Nancy and Chuck, demanding to know why they forced a shutdown when they could have made the demand for DACA extension/citizenship when they were at the White House. If we are to get such, it should be on its own or as part of a larger bill, not a two month CR that will just see us back in February, with Donny demanding more money with the understanding that he just has to hold out until the DNC asks for some concession from him.

That would have worked if the GOP retained control of the House. No way with Nancy in charge; she is more likely to insist on a repeal of the tax scam.

Actually — maybe that’s what the Dems should demand in exchange for the wall: Repeal the tax scam, stop all attempts to sabotage the ACA and instead correct its flaws, and DACA. That might be a fair exchange (+ Merrick Garland :-) )

Ayeah, I can see that. Threatening a default unless the DNC agree to “entitlement reform” by citing the $1T deficit as so large that it’s hurting the economy…even though it’s the threat of a default that is scaring the everloving fuck out of investors.

During a government shutdown instigated by Drumpf over his stupid wall? Yes, I think he will, as will the rest of the Senate. Their funders are losing money hand over fist right now. The POTUS is now not just a liability, but an absolute disaster. He’s wrecking the economy.

Also, the basic political ideology is the same, right-wing extremism, it’s just that that al Qaeda and them Daeshbags are islamist right-wingers, while y’all Qaeda and the Tealiban are Christian rightwingers. So the potential for violence is comparable, only that the latter do not reside in weak or failed states, and have not (yet) been pushed as hard as the former.

I’m really getting the urge to brush off my knowledge base in discrete video documentation.

In Paradise they won’t be home for Christmas

When the Camp Fire tore through Paradise on Nov. 8 it not only destroyed nearly all of the homes and sent residents fleeing for their lives, it scattered Tina Torres’ family around the state.

Some of her children and extended family searched as far away as Lake Tahoe and Bakersfield to find housing. Torres lived five weeks in a travel trailer in an orchard outside Chico until she recently got a three-bedroom, two-bath house to rent there.

That’s where the Christmas she had been looking forward to will happen. Torres said Christmas is very important to her.

Our Paradise refugee is still here, working down here to maintain an income. Their house survived the fire through preparation of the property and the retired firefighter-owner fighting it with extinguishers and water. Electricity has been restored but water and gas have not. Life finds a way. My dog has a new best fren, her name is Nova. He still has not figured there is a cat living in my daughter’s room.

Trump’s professing he doesn’t know the guy who was running the anti-IS campaign for the US? Then he’s claiming that McGurk is grandstanding by leaving early?

Well.. it makes perfect sense. He never reads the PDBs and doesn’t listen to anyone who tells him things he doesn’t want to hear, so he would never listen to McGurk. McGurk and the intel community has been saying IS isn’t defeated (Trump declared that it was).

The intel community was warning against a hasty retreat from Syria and Afghanistan, and Trump’s doing both - knowing damned well that the consequences will be felt long after Trump is gone because fewer people will trust the US to be on their side.

They’ll instead look to Russia, China, and others. Our stature is on decline because of Trump’s active measures.

Our allies are fucked, whether they admit it or not. Israel was just thrown under the bus and the skidmarks are showing on Bibi’s back as Trump’s actions in Syria are far more consequential than a symbolic move of embassy to Jerusalem (and that too is not having the results Trump thought - go figure).

He probably never even heard the name McGurk. Aren’t his intelligence briefings just one page? There isn’t enough room to give both essential information and identify the key people involved in reaching these decisions.

I do not blame Trump for this; it is the entire GOP establishment who is responsible for the harm he is inflicting on this country and the world. He did not disguise his views when running for the Presidency and they did not care. Once he made clear that he intended to implement those policies, they did not rein him in. McConnell is certainly more intelligent and knowledgeable than Trump’s core base — and except for some occasional pretty words, he has stood aside and let the arsonist burn everything down.

Putin is laughing; his economy may be 1/10th our size but he is achieving his goals, as is every two-bit tyrant on this planet, as we shrink in influence on a daily basis.

The most powerful nation on earth self-destructs because the entire GOP leadership consists of cowards. And the GOP donor class cares only about its pocketbook and nothing about this nation. Though I do wonder when Adelson will abandon the GOP.

At this point it’s not yet an extermination camp even theoretically and the plan doesn’t have any gas chambers or crematoria. So as far as the Holocaust is concerned, this particular document is not that interesting.

In other words going over all the reason to hate the S.O.B.

And now we move on to an even worse individual, if you can believe that. One Mike DeWine. The little creep that has held every damn political office you can. Fuckers been feeding off the public piggy bank forever, and yet his funky backers bitch about establishment politicians and takers and not makers.

McConnell is evil, but he’s not dumb. At some point the government will have to be reopened with little or no wall funding, because Trump has no leverage. His wall is unpopular and he will take the blame for the gov’t shutdown.

Will Trump sign it? Will the Republican Senate actually pass it or override his veto? I wouldn’t count on that.

the republican senate will have to. if the House under Democrats sends a funding bill to them, and they then refuse to pass it, the shutdown will be on them and them alone. same thing if the house and senate pass it and the president vetoes it. it would be on trump alone, and I doubt his juvenile base will sit still long when the lack of government services actually starts to find them in their daily lives.

I remember being in the pit at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, seeing them play this live. Some members of the audience had apparently taken mind-altering chemicals. Their reaction was quite interesting.

Also interesting that this track didn’t make it on to the ‘Starless & Bible Black’ album, but instead showed up on ‘Red,’ the following album. John Wetton had intended it to be the title track of ‘S&BB,’ but Fripp and Bruford didn’t like it and it underwent extensive lyrical re-writes before landing on ‘Red.’

I saw them in ‘74 on their American leg of Starless & Bible Black tour at Veteran’s Memorial here in Columbus. One of the greatest shows of the many great shows I have seen.

And they made Vet’s sound fantastic…which so many “electric” bands never accomplished. They had very little in equipment on stage…and a smallish PA that resembled 4 big stereo cabinets on each side. They let the buildings acoustics do the job and it was unbelievable how great it sounded.

Damn great band and Bill Buford remains one of my idols as a drummer. So clean and perfect and he had such great time signatures. And, Robert Fripp is a guitar god!!! Of course they were all fantastic musicians.

I think the only thing Fripp said all night was about the middle of the show he stood, went to the mic and asked if we liked it so far? Fuck yeah we did!

I found that being on the floor yielded good results, but the closer you got to the walls, you could hear a distinct tinny echo.

Along the Grand Funk lines, a buddy of mine saw the Animals and Steppenwolf there in ‘83, I think. He said that Steppenwolf sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, Eric Burdon’s voice was shot for the Animals’ set, so the sound guys compensated by turning everything up to 11. My friend said it was an unholy cacophony.

Today was my last 20 miler for a while
We begin reducing our running as we close in on the Dopey challenge.

After all the training we have done it’s actually looking a lot less dopey. Still a big deal. One that now seems actually doable.

It was 21 degrees at 5am here in NJ. That made for an interesting 3+ hours. 3 shirts, tights and wind pants, balaclava, gloves. eating and drinking require some thought and planning.

4 days and I miss Florida weather already. We’re back tomorrow.

Including today I have run 62 days in a row.
At least 6.2 miles a day
some days like today up to 20.

For lunch there will be beer. Dinner too.

So what’s the deal with Hogg anyway?

Harvard accepted him despite low test scores because they are also considering character and experience and all of that?

I wouldn’t say his test scores were low. I got my government degree from UT Austin even though my high school grades were horrible and my math score on the ACT (which I only took to get placed in junior college) was an abysmal 12 out of 36. This did not stop me from making straight As at the JC and then transferring in to UT Austin. You know, like what “Becky with the bad grades” (Abigail Fisher) was told to do. I then went on to law school and graduated. *rolls eyes*

Another factor coming into play is what I’ve been predicting all along—foreigners are dumping American stocks. They won’t stop there. They are starting to refuse buying Treasury securities to finance the debt.

Remember that coming down the track is the debt ceiling by Spring. If the Republicans can’t get their #2 together in the Senate and force default you will see a China syndrome in the stock markets.

Imagine all the folks who hold US Savings Bonds and Trump fucks them by redeeming a penny for every thousand dollars…That’s probably what will happen when the GOP defaults on the debt.

3. “Smelly NYC”?? I moved to the Big Apple in 1977 (probably before Kaitlin’s parents were born) - if she thinks the City is grubby now, she should have been here in the Summer of Sam - especially in the Times Square area where she’s posing….

No, this ‘Florida story’ isn’t real. Stop sharing it….you’re better than that.

At first glance, you should honestly realize that ‘CNN Miami’ isn’t a real thing….let alone the fact that it’s not a verified account and only has a few thousand followers and is actually labeled as a ‘parody account’ when you click on the Twitter page.

There’s no link to a real news site with a real write up on the incident, it’s just text with a random picture of a guy that looks kind of crazy.

So let’s take a rough count of how many licensed, fully-legal firearms there may be in NYC.

NYPD — 35,000 officers. That’s an army.
FBI — a few thousand
consulates all have their own armed security
There’s professional full-time armed security at every office building, bank, department store, jewelry store, hotel.
There’s a licensed weapon under the counter at every bodega and/or liquor store and most of the delis (and probably 1/4 of the food carts).
There’s a licensed weapon in the glove compartment of each of the 20,000 cabs and livery cars (and probably a high percentage of the Uber and Lyft vehicles)
Hundreds of thousands in people’s homes.

Before we got serious about gun control (early 90’s), there used to be more than 2,000 homicides in NYC every year. Now… it’s less than 400.

He’s going to fire Powell. And even if he doesn’t, the market is going to open tomorrow with the assumption that a Powell firing is in the cards.

They are, you fucking asswipe, but building a useless wall at the border is NOT how you get effective border security.

Do we even have to bring up all the screeching that happened in ‘13 about how Obama didn’t have to close down anything during the shutdown, but was doing it in order to “punish” people for thwarting his rule?

I’m so old, I remember when Republicans were on the news asserting that there was no reason to close government parks during the shutdown, that there were employees who not only could work but wanted to work while their agencies went unfunded. And that the only way the memorials and parks could be closed was because Obama had personally given the order to do so.

So Donny has replaced a respected general with an exec from a company that was just implicated within the last decade of trying to defraud the US gov’t of billions of dollars through bribery of a government official and deliberate fudging of numbers.

Unfortunately you’re too old
That’s too long ago for anyone who matters (ie the base ) to remember

Not that they’d acknowledge the truth of it if they did

On my Facebook timeline I still get stupid memes from “the base” popping up.

They are just without self-awareness, or they are just really bad people.

I’m guessing the latter.

But what frustrates me more are those of my Facebook friends who I know do not like Trump, but because they are Republicans don’t publicly criticize him, and then there are the hyper-religious ones who are just hoping Trump will make abortion illegal and don’t care about anything else.

The government is shutdown. The administration’s national security team is unraveling. New scandals are erupting.

It’s against this backdrop that Trump apparently thought, “Now seems like a smart time to renew a pointless fight with a retiring GOP senator

Some don’t want to be reached
