Neighborhood segregation is a very, very high concern. Segregation seems to be all about making people feel inadequate, and/or motivated to prove their adequacy or superiority.

Have you not noticed that much marketing and advertising is designed to make people feel inadequate?

One of the reasons I shifted early from making the big bucks in advertising design for big consumer goods and services and went into technical markets with things like electronics for industry, manufacturing, high performance auto parts and the like.

I couldn’t take the BS and the egos in the agencies and how they use stature and getting over on others as a method to sell. Just couldn’t do it.

They are dilapidated, their academics are 20% lower than the new feeder schools, there is more violence, etc. There is much less money flowing in from the community. So even if the feeder school’s parents aren’t racist (plenty of them are) they are dealing with the effects of years of racism towards these black kids and neighborhoods.

I don’t know what the district is going to do. Those of us in the four high schools in the north, which are among the most diverse in the country, are keeping our heads down. It’s a disaster.

When we lived in Lexington, KY we sent one of our kids to a magnet school—it was really a school-within-a-school. By creating a program and placing it in a poorer, predominately African American neighborhood school, it allowed the school to apply for federal funding and they allowed for overall upgrades. But it didn’t change the fact that the mostly white and Asian students were internally segregated into advanced classes that most of the neighborhood kids didn’t qualify to take. I still look back on that year—we had to move for work—with mixed feelings, but at the time we thought we were doing the best thing for the kids by busing them across the city to these kinds of schools when there were adequate schools much nearer.

Yes.

But some industries are more prone at doing this, at least overtly, and others appear more subtle.

The auto industry obviously attempts to structure their products to get people to “move up”.

Real estate too. But the problem with real estate is that it is typically the single biggest expense/investment a person/couple will make, as far as material objects are concerned.

A few years ago I posted some stuff here on the documentary The Century of the Self, a series that explains all of this very well.

The additional complexities of property and location play into all of our structural social problems.

And it is these same structural social problems why Trump has his “base”.

I went to sleep last night knowing that Mattis was out and Powell was probably going to keep his job. Woke up, and Mattis has been kicked out of the White House ahead of schedule and the effin’ Treasury Secretary is conference calling heads of major banks.

Putting it mildly, this is not good. This is not how politics in a stable nation is supposed to work. This is how politics works in what were formerly called “banana republics” where the rules of law and best practice were ignored to benefit the people in charge, and fuck up everyone else.

We’re not there yet, but if the economy gets completely broken, watch out for even more dangerous shenanigans by this White House.

Copy editors used to do this routinely, especially at the major newspapers. Reporters would get their copy handed back to them with “CQ” besides any quote, name, figure, date, or other fact the editor wanted double checked. That was when a daily newspaper or broadcast outfit would have at most four publication deadlines a day. Since the advent of all news, all the time, some outfits have become lax in such quality control. And “citizen journalists” with their own blogs generally don’t even bother. Dim Jim is a prime example.

How true. I bumped into a webpage for my high school class of 1972. And spent a long time looking through all the names of those who had died. Many of them I had not seen since graduation in June 1972. I guess that they will be forever young in my mind.

It seems to be that the Republicans, like Gaetz, think that they have some kind leverage after the Dems take the House on January 3rd. That’s odd, to say the least, since they have had the power of the purse over the last few years. They have to know that Pelosi is going to come in swinging with both fists, and that the new House will pass a budget and send it to the Senate within two or three days.

It may have dollars for border security, but it will have nothing for the wall. It will re-fund Planned Parenthood, have funds to expand Medicare, and include a tax increase on the top 1% to fund the ACA rebates. That is what they ran on, and won on.

If they are smart, they will also include funds to continue our support for the Kurds in Syria and Iraq. This capitulation to Erdogan is beyond the pale for our staunchest allies of the past 15 years in the Middle East (and yes, that includes Israel). It only makes the Turks, Iranis, Russians, and Assad’s happy people. You cannot win in geopolitics by abandoning your fiercest allies.

I’m no fan of the continuing conflict in Syria and Iraq, but if Drumpf thinks ISIS has been defeated, he should attend funerals in Strasbourg. It’s an ideology, not an army.

Drumpf’s shutdown will have no leverage after that budget is sent to the Senate.

Hell, he has no leverage now, but nobody in the WH has the guts to tell that disaster of a POTUS that he’s a reeking bag of puss, no longer in control of the purse strings of Government.

Sorry, rant off. I’m off to bed.

Mattis did this (courtesy of Wikipedia):

In May 2004, Mattis ordered the 3:00 a.m. bombing of a suspected enemy safe house near the Syrian border, which later came to be known as the Mukaradeeb wedding party massacre and resulted in the deaths of 42 civilians, including 11 women and 14 children. Mattis said it had taken him 30 seconds to decide whether to bomb the location. Describing the wedding as implausible, he said, “How many people go to the middle of the desert to hold a wedding 80 miles (130km) from the nearest civilization? These were more than two dozen military-age males. Let’s not be naive.” The Associated Press obtained video footage appearing to show a wedding party, but the occurrence of a wedding was disputed by military officials.

Obama on the other hand did this:

In early 2010, Mattis was reported to be on the list of generals being considered to replace James T. Conway as the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps In July, he was recommended by Defense Secretary Robert Gates for nomination to replace David Petraeus as commander of United States Central Command, and formally nominated by President Obama on July 21.

He retired after that posting. I’m not sure how a promotion is a mistreatment by Obama.

I actually use these for my garbage.
They’re much more durable than a standard garbage bag and they can hold a LOT more garbage. They also have nice handles which makes it easier when you’re hauling it out to the front curb.
Bonus feature: After about a month of using these, my neighbors stopped b****ing about the length of my grass.

Personally? I might have use for half a dozen for a SHTF room.

My objection is not to the Mattis dismissal under Obama— only the way it was handled. Nicole Parsons told the news website on Sunday that she put up the sign in her dorm window after someone drew a swastika on a “Happy Hannukah” sign earlier this month.

The university in a statement posted on Facebook said the email was “poorly worded.”

“A poorly worded email from Residence Life staff asking students to take down the sign does not reflect the values of the campus, and it should not have been sent,” the statement says. “UMass Amherst emphatically rejects Nazis, and any other hate group, a view expressed in the students’ sign.”

I’ve ranted here before about NPR and how they seem too beholden to playing with entities which would gladly close them down.

And PBS too… though the corporation gets little tax money, the individual stations got licenses as public broadcasters.

One thing I did like about Sen. Sanders’s platform was the small securities tax which would have been imposed on every trade to fund higher education.

Such a tax would not affect the small-time trader (mom and pop, long-term investor for retirement), &c. It would heavily affect computer-program trading and other such groups as hedge funds and speculators. That would also tend to smooth out the markets (computer trades not looking for the one millionth of a cent edge to make a profit).

Thus because it would hurt the wealthy conservative or libertarian in support of a public good, it was evil.

Such a program might have funded a trip to college for me if it existed in 1978.

(There’s plenty Sanders has done which I don’t like, but I do like that.)

Trump doesn’t get regional politics, let alone sectarianism or that Saudis don’t have anyone to back in Syria. Why would they fund a guy aligned with their chief rival. They aren’t going to swing Assad to their side when Iran has been backing Assad militarily.

I’m old enough to remember when in America there was a wall… not that kind of wall… between banking and the equities markets.

Then that was dismantled, as well as other regulations.

Now, the speculators loved the new freedom, and that is why on that long term graph of started to grow exponentially… until it crashed big.

Also what changed, and this was subtle and many Americans who weren’t paying close attention had no clue, is that the powers that be (i.e., the very rich and the Republican tools) shifted the idea of “retirement” from {Social Security, savings, your house, and life insurance} to a retirement assets centered on equities, which then included derivatives and such flimsy things.

Turning retirement into equities gambling may have been the biggest con during my lifetime (well, at least until Trump fooled his ignorant marks.)

But in the 21st century the idea of P/E ratios seems to be antiquated.

But… they are not.

I used to have a checking account at Washington Mutual (at a branch across from my mother’s apartment).

When I moved to Oklahoma, I was cut off from my bank (as there were no WaMu branches in Oklahoma).

On a visit to my mother, I went across the street near the end of the day to close my account. The bank teller was nervous, called the manager over, he pulled me into the office to ask why and a couple of curious questions I didn’t understand at the time.

At the end of all that, they gave me my $100.

That evening, WaMu collapsed. It is my opinion they thought I had some advance notice of the seizure of the bank, or that my $100 was the only assets they actually possessed.

The old notion was that part of the retirement was provided by pensions from the employer. This meant that private companies used the stock market to fund their benefits and most were not happy with the unpredictability or level of costs so they switched to 401(k) plans, which place the decision making burden on the employees. Given the low rate paid by banks, employees cannot receive a sufficient return on their retirement savings without subjecting themselves to the vagaries of the market. Those who are wealthy or young can wait out downturns — but the rest of us don’t have sufficient assets to guarantee enough money for a comfortable life.

Many old-time pensions held a lot of debt. The yields were low but there was not much volatility.

As you point out, moving the retirement fund management to the employee increased the interest in equities, which are more volatile.

By mid-September 2008, WaMu’s share price had closed as low as $2.00. On Thursday night (shortly after the close of business on the West Coast), the Office of Thrift Supervision seized Washington Mutual Bank and placed it into the receivership of the FDIC. In a statement, the OTS said that the massive run meant that WaMu was no longer sound.[184] The FDIC then sold most of Washington Mutual Bank’s assets, including the branch network, to JPMorgan Chase for $1.9 billion. JPMorgan Chase agreed to assume the bank’s secured debts and liabilities to depositors. The transaction did not require any FDIC insurance funds.[185] Normally, bank seizures take place after the close of business on Fridays. However, due to the bank’s deteriorating condition and leaks that a seizure was imminent, regulators felt compelled to act a day early.[16]

Speaking of Kilmeade, my Faux watching FIL gave me a book written by him tonight (not a christmas present, just had it sitting there and asked if I wanted to read it). The book is “Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans’ and Kilmeade wrote it with someone named Don Yeager. Anyone ever read it? Wonder how accurate it is. Isn’t that large of a book so I might give it a go just for giggles, hell it might even be kinda accurate.
