Yeah, I was about to say that Corker dunking on Trump might have been impressive if he was doing it back when it mattered, but he ends the year as he began it: Making a lot but accomplishing little. If he thinks that saying a lot of mean shit about Donny is going to paper over how he kept voting the party line, he’s out of his fuckin’ gourd.

By the way, it also should be noted that Corker’s (likely) last vote of his Senate career appears to have been to avoid causing an embarrassment for Donny by allowing the House CR to move forward for “negotiations” when it’s obvious it’s never going to get the votes. So even in the end, as he points and laughs at Donny, there’s four other fingers pointing back at him.

They keep having to tell him that just because somebody holds the title of ‘acting’ this or ‘acting’ that doesn’t mean he’s back on TV. And he hasn’t figured out the similarities and differences between reality and reality TV.

So, I continue to plow through the myriad of house flipping/renovating/buying&selling shows (why… I don’t know)… and the same old stories come up again and again but there is something so clearly upfront in so many of the episodes that I think it deserves more comment.

Namely, parents seem to always want to move so their children can get into a “better” school district.

Now, I have no experience with this. When I was growing up there was just one school district.

There is a undertone of social disorder going on in these shows (besides the naked materialism and desire to boast).

It’s not always about bigotry - though I suspect there is an element of that.

There is something very very bad about the entire real estate industry that is designed to make people feel inadequate.

Busing was an attempt to overcome segregated neighborhoods. Magnet schools and charter schools are an attempt to overcome neighborhood segregation without ‘forced busing’. Neighborhood segregation is a very, very high concern. Segregation seems to be all about making people feel inadequate, and/or motivated to prove their adequacy or superiority.

He is the most vapid human ever. Ever.

And, he is so disconnected, he would claim it as a great thing…number one…the best vapid human ever.

Having followed him almost his whole career and knowing he would be a mess, he has surpassed how much a mess he really could be.

Have you not noticed that much marketing and advertising is designed to make people feel inadequate?

One of the reasons I shifted early from making the big bucks in advertising design for big consumer goods and services and went into technical markets with things like electronics for industry, manufacturing, high performance auto parts and the like.

I couldn’t take the BS and the egos in the agencies and how they use stature and getting over on others as a method to sell. Just couldn’t do it.

We’re having a horrible battle in our school district right now. The southern part of the district….not where we are, other half…is deeply segregated by race and economics. Now the wealthy white/Asian areas are overcrowded so the district wants to send those kids to the “black” schools.

Problem is, those schools have been hit by institutional racism for 50 years. They are dilapidated, their academics are 20% lower than the new feeder schools, there is more violence, etc. There is much less money flowing in from the community. So even if the feeder school’s parents aren’t racist (plenty of them are) they are dealing with the effects of years of racism towards these black kids and neighborhoods.

I don’t know what the district is going to do. Those of us in the four high schools in the north, which are among the most diverse in the country, are keeping our heads down. It’s a disaster.

When we lived in Lexington, KY we sent one of our kids to a magnet school—it was really a school-within-a-school. By creating a program and placing it in a poorer, predominately African American neighborhood school, it allowed the school to apply for federal funding and they allowed for overall upgrades. But it didn’t change the fact that the mostly white and Asian students were internally segregated into advanced classes that most of the neighborhood kids didn’t qualify to take. I still look back on that year—we had to move for work—with mixed feelings, but at the time we thought we were doing the best thing for the kids by busing them across the city to these kinds of schools when there were adequate schools much nearer.

Have you not noticed that much marketing and advertising is designed to make people feel inadequate?

Yes.

But some industries are more prone at doing this, at least overtly, and others appear more subtle.

The auto industry obviously attempts to structure their products to get people to “move up”.

Real estate too. But the problem with real estate is that it is typically the single biggest expense/investment a person/couple will make, as far as material objects are concerned.

A few years ago I posted some stuff here on the documentary The Century of the Self, a series that explains all of this very well.

The additional complexities of property and location play into all of our structural social problems.

And it is these same structural social problems why Trump has his “base”.

Racism messes up everything. Keep working at fixing things! Thanks!

There’s a really good article in Raw Story today about previous generations’ understanding that combatting racism was an important part of how we won the cold war:
rawstory.com

from an amicus curie brief the Truman administration submitted in Brown v. Board, explaining why they felt desegregation was a national security priority:

Of the seven pages covering “the interest of the United States,” five focused on the way school segregation hurt the United States in the Cold War competition for the friendship and allegiance of non-white peoples in countries then gaining independence from colonial rule.

“The United States is trying to prove to the people of the world of every nationality, race and color, that a free democracy is the most civilized and most secure form of government yet devised by man…. The existence of discrimination against minority groups in the United States has an adverse effect upon our relations with other countries. Racial discrimination furnishes grist for the Communist propaganda mills.”

re: #91 Backwoods_Sleuth

You don’t send out this kind of letter, ever, unless you think there’s a damned good reason.

There isn’t, except that Trump’s basically nuked the financial markets by going after the Fed chair because the Fed is doing what they do - keeping inflation in check, keeping growth in check, etc., and not paying attention to the net worth of Trumpworld by the minute.

Trump, on the other hand, is watching his costs soar as the interest rates climb. He hates that because he’s got more to repay.

More than that though, the very act of trying to sack the very Fed chair that he sought in the first place is why the markets will be hinky tomorrow. Trump refused to reup Yellen because she was an Obama pick.

He picks his own, and now regrets it.

Fact is everyone Trump picks has turned out to be a shitshow for one reason or another. He picks all the best people, except when he fires them because they did something wrong - like tell him what he needs to hear instead of what he wants to hear.

I took a nap, put up that Seinfeld clip and then wondered WTF you were talking about. WTF???? Who the hell calls the heads of the six biggest banks in the US on the Sunday before Christmas to talk about liquidity AND THEN PUBLICLY DISCUSSES IT??

WHO?

The idiots in this administration, that’s who!

There were lots and lots of those discussions in September and October 2008 in the financial markets meltdown, but they weren’t made public. And given that lending was frozen nearly solid, they were justified. However, this is just seriously irresponsible.

I personally don’t think that we’re anywhere near where we were in fall 2008 but with idiots like Mnuchin sounding off, we could be pushed into something very stupid and very harmful very quickly. The guy needs a figurative knee in the nuts to shut him up.

I remember people telling me politics is boring, while I thought it was fascinating. Now I understand that boring (in politics) is a good thing. It means the people in charge know WTF they are doing, and that we the people can expect that tomorrow will be pretty much like today, which was like yesterday, barring emergencies and natural disasters. Despite all the RWNJ/racist carping during Obama’s administration, those eight years were really very boring, because nearly everything was working the way it should.

In contrast, politics since Trump took office has been a constant reminder that the people in charge have no fucking clue how to run this country, much less a Keurig coffee maker. Chief among those losers is the occupier of the Oval Office, who daily embarrasses the USA publicly each time he has access to Twitter, who has no plan, no agenda, no strategy. All he has are his feelings at any particular moment, which he feels qualify him to make world-changing decisions, because only he can fix.

I went to sleep last night knowing that Mattis was out and Powell was probably going to keep his job. Woke up, and Mattis has been kicked out of the White House ahead of schedule and the effin’ Treasury Secretary is conference calling heads of major banks.

Putting it mildly, this is not good. This is not how politics in a stable nation is supposed to work. This is how politics works in what were formerly called “banana republics” where the rules of law and best practice were ignored to benefit the people in charge, and fuck up everyone else.

We’re not there yet, but if the economy gets completely broken, watch out for even more dangerous shenanigans by this White House.

How Russian Money helped save Trump’s Business. Long, but worth reading to the end!

“Our broader concern is the extent to which the Trump Organization has received an influx of foreign sources of money over the years, and if that continues to compromise the president,” said one Capitol Hill staffer. He added that this wouldn’t be an issue if Trump had followed precedent and divested himself of his business holdings, as previous presidents have.

There’s a reason we called him “No Drama Obama.” In 8 years, as the GOP lost their minds on an hourly basis, the White House stood firm and we knew that if the answers weren’t immediately forthcoming we’d soon have them.

Now? Now we have to wait for White House staff leaks to learn just how fucked we all really are because the people in charge swear the sun rises in the west.

I still vote that this thing under Trump isn’t the swamp anymore, it’s the hog lagoon.

Swamps are rich diverse ecosystems that have a necessary role within the larger natural world.

This…is a massive hole full of excrement that’s been abandoned by profiteers, knowing that it’s going to sicken people and poison soil and water.

Not to worry, we’ll be assured by the same folks who spent 8 years of Obama’s admin insisting that the market would crash “any moment” that we were “due” for another recession and thus this is in no way Trump’s fault. “President’s have no control over the economy,” say the people who once accused Obama of causing run on the market if he sneezed.

Trump has given a hell of a display at his total lack of political (and other) knowledge and his utter lack of character these past two weeks.

He has got to be costing the Republican congress members support at home.

This holiday break could be a good time for them to consider their futures, the country’s future and how much more gamble they are going to take with it all before they pull the plug.

We all hoped the Mueller investigation brings Trump down. We may not even need it as Trump is doing a great job of doing it to himself.

That is not to say call off the investigations…hell no. Just release more and more to pressure Trump. That pressure is causing him to make these stupid moves.

There has been some talk Mueller could wrap up in February with his report. Things are closing in more and more.

Basically Donny is gonna be in the foreground, screaming that businesses are betraying him by cutting jobs, hours, and wages when he gave them such a big tax cut. Meanwhile, Mnunchin, Ross, and Kudlow will be out there, trying to stop the rout by assuring folks that this is a “correction” and not a recession, that the “fundamentals of the economy are sound,” and things will level out “soon.”

There are quite a few financial experts, and not just the usual doomsayers and goldbugs, that have been predicting a recession for months now. All it would take to bring the house of cards is some seemingly inconsequential event, say, like the president wishing he could fire the Fed chair or the Treasury Secretary conference calling major bank bosses on the Sunday before Christmas.

That might have worked in the somewhat distant past. We are still real close to 2008 to not have people scared about what is going on. The memories are too fresh and everyone knows it was Republicans then as now.

Trump’s base is not the financial power of the Republican party…the King Makers.

Those folks have real power ($$$$) and if they start chewing on Senators and threatening their “resources” for runs in 2020 those Senators have to choose money and future over Trump.

At the very least there will be someone in the party running against Trump.

And someone like Kasich could still try an independent run.

It has got be getting harder and harder to make your future Trump.

Everyone in the markets knows that when the President says or does something incredibly dumb, it will rattle the markets.

Contemplating sacking the fed chair because he approved the interest rate hikes is enough to rattle the markets already spooked by an ongoing correction.

But Mnuchin’s letter about liquidity? That’s enough to cause seizures by Wall Street execs, because you wouldn’t be asking about liquidity unless you were concerned about liquidity due to an event you expect to occur.

What is the event you expect to occur? Trump’s words having a negative effect, causing a mass outflow from the markets and seeking safer refuges - cash.

Trump and his fucknut advisers are rushing headlong into a financial crisis, because a recession wouldn’t be bad enough for these fuckers.

I was wondering if it was 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) a sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia which was basically looted by the last prime minister and his buddies. It’s tangled up in some serious crazy. Goldman Sachs made $600 million in selling 1MBD securities and now the current Malaysian government wants that money back, with penalties and interest.

If it’s not 1MDB, perhaps it’s another country’s sovereign wealth fund? I know Qatar has been on the bad list and it has a sovereign wealth fund (Qatar Investment Authority). Just completely speculating here.

re: #197 goddamnedfrank

The part of the semantic game I love is there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the word “fence.” It doesn’t denote anything specific about the design of the barrier, and even the connotational model people having in their head…a wire fence or a wood slatted fence…shouldn’t detract from the fact a barrier can be a fence and yet be imposing and hard to breach.

But Trump’s locked himself in with bigger and stupider invocations of a wall, and front-loaded that word with significance; he’s described the current (steel slat fence) along border sections as inadequate; and he’s promised his goons something More Big and symbolically More Powerful and Lethal.

Were he a normal business person talking to sane people, he could say fence and nobody would blink because, um, words are flexible and changes to building projects happen.

But this is a multilevel marketing presidency, so realistic projections are the enemy. He has to keep upselling to keep his down-line engaged, and sealing the border is not really about the border but about all the magical-thinking permutations of what will be “solved.” So…he can’t just call it a fence. eta: (The most important sentences no less!) He has to invent language to make the new plan sound like ANYTHING other than what’s currently there, because his entire MLM gambit is rooted in how his is More and Better.. It has to be a Fence Plus.

Favorite dad joke:

Every letter counts:
A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was
a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives
and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: October 16, 2004

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is freaking hot down here!

We had a discussion about this last night.

“I’ve been around here long enough to remember in February, when the Democrats came forward and said we will give you $25 billion for border security in exchange for a pathway to citizenship for DACA,” she recalled.

Gaetz said Republicans aren’t willing to make a “deal” that gives amnesty for those children of immigrants who were forcibly brought to the United States as children.

Copy editors used to do this routinely, especially at the major newspapers. Reporters would get their copy handed back to them with “CQ” besides any quote, name, figure, date, or other fact the editor wanted double checked. That was when a daily newspaper or broadcast outfit would have at most four publication deadlines a day. Since the advent of all news, all the time, some outfits have become lax in such quality control. And “citizen journalists” with their own blogs generally don’t even bother. Dim Jim is a prime example.

Not sure, but he’s definitely on something if he thinks he or his compatriots have any sort of leverage in this shutdown.

It seems to be that the Republicans, like Gaetz, think that they have some kind leverage after the Dems take the House on January 3rd. That’s odd, to say the least, since they have had the power of the purse over the last few years. They have to know that Pelosi is going to come in swinging with both fists, and that the new House will pass a budget and send it to the Senate within two or three days.

It may have dollars for border security, but it will have nothing for the wall. It will re-fund Planned Parenthood, have funds to expand Medicare, and include a tax increase on the top 1% to fund the ACA rebates. That is what they ran on, and won on.

If they are smart, they will also include funds to continue our support for the Kurds in Syria and Iraq. This capitulation to Erdogan is beyond the pale for our staunchest allies of the past 15 years in the Middle East (and yes, that includes Israel). It only makes the Turks, Iranis, Russians, and Assad’s happy people. You cannot win in geopolitics by abandoning your fiercest allies.

I’m no fan of the continuing conflict in Syria and Iraq, but if Drumpf thinks ISIS has been defeated, he should attend funerals in Strasbourg. It’s an ideology, not an army.

Drumpf’s shutdown will have no leverage after that budget is sent to the Senate.

Hell, he has no leverage now, but nobody in the WH has the guts to tell that disaster of a POTUS that he’s a reeking bag of puss, no longer in control of the purse strings of Government.

Sorry, rant off. I’m off to bed.

Which is why the press did so much to facilitate Trump becoming President and still highlights his exploits in such great but irrelevant detail. It keeps readers and viewers glued to their sets/screens.

Yep, seems like Anak Krakatau generated an underwater run-out landslide which triggered the tsunami.

There’s a hypothesis that a submarine earthquake on a known seismic fault off the coast of southwest Ireland may have triggered a tsunami which inundated the area around the Bristol Channel in 1607. Of course, it could’ve just been a storm surge as well to be fair - unfortunately, records from that era are not exactly well-known for their scientific accuracy.

No he hasn’t. Matt Powell wants everyone executed who doesn’t follow the Bible exactly (except for the parts he doesn’t wnat to keep): atheists, feminists, liberals, &c.

Matt Powell is trying to use YouTube to leverage a televangelist run.

Despite overt hate speech and calling for the death of various people, YouTube won’t suspend him (citing freedom of speech and freedom of religion).

If I had a YouTube channel and called for genocide, I’d be suspended and all my videos removed.

Anyone who identifies as Christian and then says the same thing is permitted.

Ah, OK. Yeah, that’s been generating quite the buzz as of late.

I didn’t know it was a state-owned bank….I just read that it was being described as a “state-owned company”. Granted, there isn’t too much here in the former East Bloc that’s still state-owned (in the case of Czech Republic, about the only thing still owned by the state is Czech Railways and part of ČEZ, an energy company) but it’s most likely one of the Russian banks.

What did Obama do? I can’t find anything in that article.

Mattis did this (courtesy of Wikipedia):

In May 2004, Mattis ordered the 3:00 a.m. bombing of a suspected enemy safe house near the Syrian border, which later came to be known as the Mukaradeeb wedding party massacre and resulted in the deaths of 42 civilians, including 11 women and 14 children. Mattis said it had taken him 30 seconds to decide whether to bomb the location. Describing the wedding as implausible, he said, “How many people go to the middle of the desert to hold a wedding 80 miles (130km) from the nearest civilization? These were more than two dozen military-age males. Let’s not be naive.” The Associated Press obtained video footage appearing to show a wedding party, but the occurrence of a wedding was disputed by military officials.

Obama on the other hand did this:

In early 2010, Mattis was reported to be on the list of generals being considered to replace James T. Conway as the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps In July, he was recommended by Defense Secretary Robert Gates for nomination to replace David Petraeus as commander of United States Central Command, and formally nominated by President Obama on July 21.

He retired after that posting. I’m not sure how a promotion is a mistreatment by Obama.

Wow, the comments:

I actually use these for my garbage.
They’re much more durable than a standard garbage bag and they can hold a LOT more garbage. They also have nice handles which makes it easier when you’re hauling it out to the front curb.
Bonus feature: After about a month of using these, my neighbors stopped b****ing about the length of my grass.

Personally? I might have use for half a dozen for a SHTF room.

The latest example of the Christian parade of genocidal lust from Matt Powell, a chat about his anti-science “movie” which claims Christianity is under attack (YouTube video) from Utah Outcasts (caution for coarse language, 12:31):

[Embedded content]

Video

Powell appears to be part of the Steven “Pissing Preacher” Anderson group. Anderson lives in the next city over from me and, in fact, his hate organization aka “church” is a mile from my desk at work as the crow flies. If Powell gets too popular, Anderson will find some reason to kick him out. So we’ll see.

It seems to me that if someone is being demoted, he shouldn’t have to learn of it from a public statement.

Is being in charge of Central Command under the direct charges of the President Obama or would that have been the role of Leon Penetta who was Secretary of Defense?

While it appears that was handled badly, was it really Obama’s doing or Panetta’s?

Mattis is directly under Trump in this case because he is Secretary of Defense.

From some brief searching, as I am sorta new to this ‘news’, it appears many of the articles are right leaning military types that never liked Obama and they used it to bash Obama.

Also, keep in mind, Obama was never enamored with Mattis from the get-go. Mattis wanted to attack Iran and I am thinking Obama doing the no nukes deal with Iran created a lot of rancor.

From other articles, it appear Mattis was being a pain in the ass to all the civilian types (Panetta) in the Pentagon.

And after reading some of this, I now know why Trump picked Mattis as Secretary of Defense. It appears to me it was because of the Obama/Mattis tiff.

Let’s say it was another way to piss on Obama’s bed.

Edit: didn’t finish a thought.

I’m not sure how “retired after that command” equates to “being demoted.” Particularly when leaving the military, he was immediately hired by General Dynamics.

re: #404 ObserverArt

Is being in charge of Central Command under the direct charges of the President Obama or would that have been the role of Leon Penetta who was Secretary of Defense?

While it appears that was handled badly, was it really Obama’s doing or Panetta’s?

Mattis is directly under Trump in this case because he is Secretary of Defense.

From some brief searching, as I am sorta new to this ‘news’, it appears many of the articles are right leaning military types that never liked Obama and they used it to bash Obama.

Also, keep in mind, Obama was never enamored with Mattis from the get-go. Mattis wanted to attack Iran and I am thinking Obama doing the no nukes deal with Iran.

My objection is not to the Mattis dismissal under Obama— only the way it was handled. Certainly it could have been a failing by the Pentagon rather then the WH; it could have been someone dropped the ball — that each side thought the other was going to contact Mattis in advance of the official announcement.

If Powell gets too popular, Anderson will find some reason to kick him out. So we’ll see.

Then there’s good ol’ Kevin Swanson down there south of me in Colorado. He’s another “kill ‘em all and let God sort them out” sort of person. Wall Street is investing into Bitcoin and Ethereum pretty heavily. Organized crime still prefers cash, because most cryptos are not anonymous and can be traced to the source. That’s how the FBI busted the Silk Road illicit market site. And the Russians use shell companies.

As for currency, only about 30% of US dollars exist in physical form. The other 70% is stored as numbers in computers.

Nicole Parsons told the news website on Sunday that she put up the sign in her dorm window after someone drew a swastika on a “Happy Hannukah” sign earlier this month.

The university in a statement posted on Facebook said the email was “poorly worded.”

“A poorly worded email from Residence Life staff asking students to take down the sign does not reflect the values of the campus, and it should not have been sent,” the statement says. “UMass Amherst emphatically rejects Nazis, and any other hate group, a view expressed in the students’ sign.”

“However, we are sensitive to the use of profanity, which some could find inappropriate,” the statement adds. “The university respects the students’ right to display the sign and it may remain up.”

Maybe, though the dudebros don’t back the currency in the same sense as the Treasury and the Fed back the dollar. The markets determine the price of Bitcoin, etc., much as they do commodities like gold and crude oil. Granted, commodities have utilitarian value, while Bitcoin does not, but the monetary value of all of them is determined by how much people are willing to pay for them and in the case of oil how the cartels set the sale price.

“Fuck” is not profane. Profanity is an offence against a god or a religion. “Fuck” might be considered vulgar, as one of those old Anglo-Saxon words replace by Norman French words like “intercourse.”

You’d think a university would know the difference between “profane” and “vulgar.” I’ve never been to one (except as a visitor) and I know the difference.

The problem with appealing-to-both-sides in American media is that there really isn’t any thoughtful balance on what the “sides” really means.

And that goes all the way to the so-called public broadcasters too.

I’ve ranted here before about NPR and how they seem too beholden to playing with entities which would gladly close them down.

And PBS too… though the corporation gets little tax money, the individual stations got licenses as public broadcasters.

Note this from the upcoming season of Henry Gate’s show:

As reported in the Journal Sentinel, House Speaker Paul Ryan’s DNA test showed he’s 3 percent Ashkenazi Jewish. (That’s roughly the equivalent of one Jewish third-great-grandparent.) “You could have knocked him over with a feather,” Gates says. He adds that this ethnicity likely came from Ryan’s mother’s German line, which the show’s researchers traced to Ryan’s 10th-great-grandfather, born in 1531.

Ryan would have gladly gutted all of public broadcasting if he could have gotten away with it…

As for his distant AJ ancestor… Ryan may find such things personally interesting, or not, but Ryan sure didn’t make any public efforts to constrain the anti-semitic streak that runs through so many of the glibertarian factions of the GOP.

Interesting find about The Commandments.

They changed it on me!

(How does man change “God’s Laws?” - I don’t need an answer, I have a good idea…convenience. One of the reasons I am no longer religious.)

Liturgical Press -
“You Shall Not Kill” or “You Shall Not Murder”?

Nearly all English translations of the Bible during the last third of the twentieth century have changed the wording of the sixth commandment from kill to murder. The Hebrew word that appears in the commandment has a broader semantic range than murder. Wilma Ann Bailey discusses why the Protestant and Jewish traditions changed the wording and why the Roman Catholic tradition did not. She also examines the impact that the wording will have in the future for people who believe that there is no general prohibition against killing in the Hebrew Bible and why questions of killing that are broader than murder—death penalty and just war—are no longer part of the discussion of this commandment.

Chapters are You Shall Not Kill, The Sixth Commandment in Evangelical Protestantism, The Sixth Commandment in Mainline Traditions, The Sixth Commandment in Judaism, The Fifth Commandment in Roman Catholicism, When ‘You Shall Not Kill’ Became ‘You Shall Not Murder.’

Wilma Ann Bailey, MA, PhD, is associate professor of Hebrew and Aramaic Scripture at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis.

One thing I did like about Sen. Sanders’s platform was the small securities tax which would have been imposed on every trade to fund higher education.

Such a tax would not affect the small-time trader (mom and pop, long-term investor for retirement), &c. It would heavily affect computer-program trading and other such groups as hedge funds and speculators. That would also tend to smooth out the markets (computer trades not looking for the one millionth of a cent edge to make a profit).

Thus because it would hurt the wealthy conservative or libertarian in support of a public good, it was evil.

Such a program might have funded a trip to college for me if it existed in 1978.

(There’s plenty Sanders has done which I don’t like, but I do like that.)

It’s even more bugnuts insane when you actually try to get into the details.

Assad is Alawite. His backers are Russia and Iran. Iran is Shi’ite, while the Saudis are Salafists opposed to anyone who isn’t Sunni.

Saudis don’t have any sway in Syria because they oppose Shia expansionism. There’s no reason for the Saudis to throw money to Syria, except to build up the insurrectionists (which also happens to include the Islamic State).

Trump doesn’t get regional politics, let alone sectarianism or that Saudis don’t have anyone to back in Syria. Why would they fund a guy aligned with their chief rival. They aren’t going to swing Assad to their side when Iran has been backing Assad militarily.

Dennis Prager (former right wing nut job radio host until he found out he could scam more money by hawking religion) was on FOX.

KILMEADE: “Dennis, nobody knows more about religion, all types of religion, and theories and traditions than you. Why does merry Christmas matter?”

PRAGER: “It matters because it’s a national holiday, first of all. People have to understand I’m a Jew, OK? Christmas is not my religious holiday, but Christmas is my national holiday, on de facto and legal grounds. On the legal grounds it’s a national holiday. I honor my country. Number two, the vast majority of my fellow citizens celebrate this holiday. It’s — the notion — and this is the most important point — the notion that if you don’t celebrate Christmas or if you’re not a Christian you are offended by it, is so preposterous that words fail me. Preposterous is an understatement. Why would I be offended as a Jew if you said to me, as a non-Christian if you said to me merry Christmas? The idea is so narcissistic and so absurd, this is the holiday of the season. And it’s — to deny that there is a war on Christmas is to lie.”

“Merry Christmas” only became popular after “A Christmas Carol” was published.

Too bad conservatives don’t feel the same way (on legal grounds) about Labor Day or Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday, which are also national holidays.

So what if the vast majority of your fellow citizens celebrate the holiday, and your strawman about non-Christians should spontaneously combust. (Speaking of lying, Dennis.)

I’m old enough to remember when in America there was a wall… not that kind of wall… between banking and the equities markets.

Then that was dismantled, as well as other regulations.

Now, the speculators loved the new freedom, and that is why on that long term graph of started to grow exponentially… until it crashed big.

Also what changed, and this was subtle and many Americans who weren’t paying close attention had no clue, is that the powers that be (i.e., the very rich and the Republican tools) shifted the idea of “retirement” from {Social Security, savings, your house, and life insurance} to a retirement assets centered on equities, which then included derivatives and such flimsy things.

Turning retirement into equities gambling may have been the biggest con during my lifetime (well, at least until Trump fooled his ignorant marks.)

I used to have a checking account at Washington Mutual (at a branch across from my mother’s apartment).

When I moved to Oklahoma, I was cut off from my bank (as there were no WaMu branches in Oklahoma).

On a visit to my mother, I went across the street near the end of the day to close my account. The bank teller was nervous, called the manager over, he pulled me into the office to ask why and a couple of curious questions I didn’t understand at the time.

At the end of all that, they gave me my $100.

That evening, WaMu collapsed. It is my opinion they thought I had some advance notice of the seizure of the bank, or that my $100 was the only assets they actually possessed.

Turning retirement into equities gambling may have been the biggest con during my lifetime (well, at least until Trump fooled his ignorant marks.)

The old notion was that part of the retirement was provided by pensions from the employer. This meant that private companies used the stock market to fund their benefits and most were not happy with the unpredictability or level of costs so they switched to 401(k) plans, which place the decision making burden on the employees. Given the low rate paid by banks, employees cannot receive a sufficient return on their retirement savings without subjecting themselves to the vagaries of the market. Those who are wealthy or young can wait out downturns — but the rest of us don’t have sufficient assets to guarantee enough money for a comfortable life.

re: #540 Anymouse 🌹

I just read up on the collapse of Washington Mutual - it went down like this (per Wiki):

By mid-September 2008, WaMu’s share price had closed as low as $2.00. It had been worth over $30.00 in September 2007, and had briefly traded as high as $45 in the previous year.[183] While WaMu publicly insisted it could stay independent, earlier in the month it had quietly hired Goldman Sachs to identify potential bidders. However, several deadlines passed without anyone submitting a bid.[16] At the same time, WaMu suffered a massive run (mostly via electronic banking over the internet and wire transfer[citation needed]); customers pulled out $16.7 billion in deposits in a ten-day span.[184]

This led the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department to step up pressure for WaMu to find a buyer, as a takeover by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) could have been a severe drain on the FDIC insurance fund, which had already been hard hit by the failure of IndyMac that year. The FDIC ultimately held a secret auction of Washington Mutual Bank, which was won by JPMorgan Chase. On the morning of Thursday, September 25 (which happened to be the 119th anniversary of WaMu’s establishment), regulators informed officials at JPMorgan Chase that they were the winners.[16]

On Thursday night (shortly after the close of business on the West Coast), the Office of Thrift Supervision seized Washington Mutual Bank and placed it into the receivership of the FDIC. In a statement, the OTS said that the massive run meant that WaMu was no longer sound.[184] The FDIC then sold most of Washington Mutual Bank’s assets, including the branch network, to JPMorgan Chase for $1.9 billion. JPMorgan Chase agreed to assume the bank’s secured debts and liabilities to depositors. The transaction did not require any FDIC insurance funds.[185] Normally, bank seizures take place after the close of business on Fridays. However, due to the bank’s deteriorating condition and leaks that a seizure was imminent, regulators felt compelled to act a day early.[16]

Basically, there was an electronic bank run for a little over a week that precipitated WaMu’s seizure by the Feds.

Dennis Prager (former right wing nut job radio host until he found out he could scam more money by hawking religion) was on FOX.

Speaking of Kilmeade, my Faux watching FIL gave me a book written by him tonight (not a christmas present, just had it sitting there and asked if I wanted to read it). The book is “Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans’ and Kilmeade wrote it with someone named Don Yeager. Anyone ever read it? Wonder how accurate it is. Isn’t that large of a book so I might give it a go just for giggles, hell it might even be kinda accurate.
