On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.

The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It’s a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you’ve done it.

A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.

I watched “Hostiles” with Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike. A heartwarming story about a veteran and a widow who adopt a minority child.

SPOILER:

After everyone else in the film dies by gunshot or cancer, but mostly gunshot.

Jim Williams, ‘The Man at the Wall,’ dies at age 84

Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jim Williams died Dec. 19 at his home in Corriganville at age 84. He continued to serve his country long after retiring from his 20 years in uniform.

“Jim posed for Lee Teter (who painted the original ‘Reflections’) as being a businessman visiting the Vietnam Memorial Wall,” said Cook. “And one can infer what is going through this man’s mind and heart while honoring those names on The Wall.

I recently had a coworker tell me that even though Trump’s trade decisions are hurting various groups, they will ultimately be good for the economy. I just wonder how many of them are going to think that when Trump’s shenanigans reduce our military need to the point that my defense contractor company no longer gets contracts.

I’m sure gun buybacks are somehow unconstitutional—maybe the NRA will explain how.

re: #12 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

I’m sure gun buybacks are somehow unconstitutional—maybe the NRA will explain how.

They’ve sued cities in the past, not specifically about buybacks, but the idea a city can’t dispose of public property (which the guns become) without disposing of them at a publicly-announced auction (so their members can buy them).

That said, the city is well within it’s rights to trace any weapons used in crimes, and conduct background checks on all sales.

That rocket launcher isn’t going anywhere though. The city police chief said they’ve asked the military to trace the origin of the rocket launcher.

A less than glorious moment in US military history. On this day in 1776, US troops from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania fought each other at Fort Ticonderoga. Alcohol was involved.
1776 ‘Christmas Riot’ At Fort Ticonderoga Reveals Long-Forgotten Tensions

There were class differences, cultural clashes, and escalating rivalries between officers. There was also a lot of boredom and alcohol. On Christmas night, a Pennsylvania colonel named Thomas Craig appears to have led a sudden vicious attack.

Dozens of Pennsylvania soldiers followed him, raiding the Massachusetts encampment, shouting threats against the “Damn Yankees” and threatening murder. Keagle found one officer’s account that described Pennsylvania soldiers “armed with guns, bayonets and swords, [who] by force entered the tents and huts of [Massachusetts] officers and soldiers, dragging many out of doors naked and wounding them, robbing and plundering.”

Apparently no one died and senior officers soon restored order.

My wife and I went to see Aquaman this afternoon and I feel the same about it.

The Aqua-plot was recycled from countless sources. Illegitimate son of exiled princess must return to his homeland to challenge his megalomaniac younger half-brother for the throne and become the rightful king. Stitched onto that was a separate subplot dealing with another man’s vengeance for the illegitimate son letting the man’s father die. Then there was a melee and lots of CGI.

The CGI was about the only thing the ancient Greeks did not have as plot devices.

Still, it was not a bad movie. Just not up to Wonder Woman standards.

When I lived in Japan, on occasion I would see whale meat in the meat counter at the grocery store… usually in small quantities though, as supplies were quite limited.

I’m not sure if many Japanese want to eat whale any more. But Abe is part of the old old school, his grandparents being all Imperial Japanese folk, and Abe will do what it takes to please the atavists in his own country. And now Abe knows that there will not be any push back from the US.

Extreme heat and years of ongoing drought, both linked to climate change, are contributing to the frequency and severity of wildfires across the western United States. But in his executive order, Trump instead cites concerns about regulatory obstacles to fighting wildfires and the value of logging to prevent future fires.

The executive order, titled “Promoting Active Management of America’s Forests, Rangelands, and other Federal Lands to Improve Conditions and Reduce Wildfire Risk,” calls on the secretaries of Interior and Agriculture to reduce “regulatory barriers” to getting rid of “hazardous fuels” that contribute to wildfires.

As part of his wildfire fuel reduction plan, the president ordered the easing of regulations in order to allow for the harvest of least 3.8 billion board feet of timber -a measure of volume of lumber — from lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and another 600 million board feet of timber on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property.

I saw this, got distracted, and it took me a long time to find it again. An article with new (to me) information. Excerpts:

[…]

An immigration lawyer from Southern New Mexico, who asked not to be identified, said the Otero County Processing Center is for adults only, so the Guatemalan boy likely wasn’t being held there. She said he might have been detained at an inland Border Patrol checkpoint, likely on U.S. 70 or U.S. 54.

[…]

U.S. Rep.-elect Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, said that the federal government has failed to meet its obligation in protecting and meeting the health care needs of migrants crossing the border seeking asylum. [She’s quoted at length. She won the seat Beto is stepping out of.]

[…]

The Washington Post reported that a CBP official said the boy was apprehended in El Paso, then held at a Border Patrol cell at a checkpoint between Las Cruces and Alamogordo due to overcrowding in El Paso cells.

Democrats are constantly talking about taking care of the homeless. But the thing Beto is pushing right now is a response to a Trump created emergency, and that require something different than the long term solution to homelessness, though both seem to be limited by the same group of people.

August 17, 2018:

Officials worry Trump may back Erik Prince plan to privatize war in Afghanistan
“I know he’s frustrated,” Blackwater founder Prince said of the president. “He gave the Pentagon what they wanted. And they haven’t delivered.”

President Donald Trump is increasingly venting frustration to his national security team about the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and showing renewed interest in a proposal by Blackwater founder Erik Prince to privatize the war, current and former senior administration officials said.

Prince’s idea, which first surfaced last year during the president’s Afghanistan strategy review, envisions replacing troops with private military contractors who would work for a special U.S. envoy for the war who would report directly to the president.

It has raised ethical and security concerns among senior military officials, key lawmakers and members of Trump’s national security team. A year after Trump’s strategy announcement, his advisers are worried his impatience with the Afghanistan conflict will cause him to seriously consider proposals like Prince’s or abruptly order a complete U.S. withdrawal, officials said. My big Christmas present:

[Embedded content]

A 43” 4K tv I am using as a monitor, replacing my two 24” 1920x1080 monitors.

That’s so cool! I would love to have one big screen which I could split for my work, but have no idea how to do it. Just this past week, I purchased another monitor to make my work easier, but having it side by side instead of cattywampus would work even better since I’m looking at medical records on one screen and typing them into a report on the other screen.

He’s got a number of black powder hunting videos. Far more interesting than the garbage hunting shows on TV. He’s the kind of person to hold up against the Nugents and other poachers in this world.

So much Christmas music, even serious music, suffers from over production, and an esthetic that is infused with maudlin tones.

Cantique de noel (O Holy Night) makes a good test of this. Lots of videos on Youtube, by all the top singers (opera and otherwise)… and nearly all of them suffer from attempting to be too good.

To me, the effective singer doesn’t need gimmicks. Strip away all the production… and just be left with the singer. If they can cause a response that is more than just nostalgia, then I propose they are on the way to be a truly great singer.

If the singer believes the song you can tell.

Sometimes, not singing it optimally will be what makes it a good performance of the piece. I have more than one song I like where, if you have a trained ear, can hear the performing is crying his/her way through (parts of) the song.

Jason Mamoa has Dwayne Johnson level charisma; just a fun guy to watch.

Never really learned how to hunt birds with a shotgun. So I am impressed with any who has those skills. Let alone with black powder. Thanks for posting it!

And yes, there are an amazing number of idiots out there with guns. And the bullet holes in the walls, ceilings, and floors of local gun ranges show that.

That video reminded me of chorus from this song:

Julio Iglesias - Vuela alto

JULIO IGLESIAS (Vuela Alto) LETRAS

lyricstranslate.com

Attaining a goal takes work
and it takes so much to get there
and when you’ve finally arrived
staying there takes more work.

Try not to let your guard down
or look backwards,
or everything you’ve achieved
they will take away from you.

Nothing is free here
everything has a high price
a step upwards,
is a step for which you must pay.

Here you have to dance to everything
without ever losing your step
they tend to let go of your hand
if they see you going down.

(Chorus)
Fly friend, fly high
don’t be a seagull in the ocean
Fly friend, fly high
don’t be a seagull in the ocean
People shoot to kill
when we fly too low
People shoot to kill
when we fly too low

More formal than the Lanza version, though.

As with dancers, I think singers are the most effective when they are on the edge of losing control.

It would appear that the New York Time dug up the podiatrist who diagnosed Trump’s timely bone spurs. (He’s dead, his daughters aren’t.)

The daughters state their father diagnosed that as a favour to Fred Trump as a quid pro quo.

Trump will probably Tweet about how it’s all “fake news” or his usual BS.

The govt agencies involved are shut down, so they couldn’t approve a contract. Trump personally can’t approve that contract either, since that isn’t how it works.

Shocking… absolutely no one.

Here’s the thing. Why is this a story 2 years into Trumpworld. This is the story that should have been run before Trump got the nomination, let alone the November 2016 election.

Now? It just confirms what we’ve always known. Everyone in Trumpworld is compromised, complicit, and/or criminal. It just blends into the background noise that everyone Trump engages with is corrupt/compromised as fuck.

I’m not sure it would have made much difference even if this “revelation” had come out during the campaign - the “bone spurs” BS always sounded like BS from the start: ISTM that almost everyone just assumed it a was (and always had been) a case of rich-guy-with-connections getting/buying a pass on the draft. It’s hard to retroactively determine what might or might not have influenced anyone’s vote, but I think the Trump voters in 2016 were going to vote for him regardless of the truth/falsity of any allegations against him: or whatever personality flaws might have been revealed. They just don’t seem to give a crap.

Trump’s been on radio silence on Twitter… which is unusual.
An aircraft spotter seems to have noticed a few unusual aircraft movements including the presidential air wing - possibly a flight to Europe/Middle East

It may be Trump going overseas on an unscheduled trip.

It’s thin, but Trump being silent on the twitterverse is indicative that something is going on. He likes surprises, so this may be one - like going to visit troops thinking he’ll be treated like a hero for pulling them out of Syria or Afghanistan without a plan or even coordination with our allies.

Just this past week, I purchased another monitor to make my work easier, but having it side by side instead of cattywampus would work even better since I’m looking at medical records on one screen and typing them into a report on the other screen.

You need a 4k tv and a video card that supports 3840x2160 (which is the 4k resolution). Even the cheap Nvidia cards support it. I do recommend spending the money on a quality HDMI cable. Then just follow the normal installation instructions.

No one would have cared. Vietnam was a deeply unpopular war that ended over 40 years ago. The fact that someone lied to escape serving would not be shocking and would never have affected the 2016 results, especially given that Trump was a Republican. Trump’s disparaged McCain during the campaign and that didn’t harm him; why would his evading the draft 50 years ago make any difference?

We’ve been seeing a series of stories about Trump actions before the election, some of them going back decades, all pointing to shady dealings, corruption, and criminality, and yet the Times didn’t feel the need to investigate them until now.

That’s a big part of the problem. They prioritized the bulkshit email nonsense over the wide ranging Trump corruption - even on the Trump foundation being nothing more than a money laundering option for Trump to profit from other people’s donations. They amplified Trump’s claims that Clinton Fdn was corrupt, when it actually was Trump doing the crimes (projecting like Imax).

The attempt to catch up now shows how badly they fell for Trump’s spin (and still are - because they’re playing never ending game of catch-up while Trump spews on to the next outrageous set of lies).

i think (hope) that
- just as it took a while to get trump’s schtick analyzed
- so that now its obvious and predictable
- and it took a while to do some of this digging
- for which some reports deserve pulitzers or at least oscars

- it’s the same for the NYT and some other of the large organs
- it took a while to get their schtick analyzed
- and now their behavior is baked in. they published it themselves for the last 3 years
- its now obvious and undeniable - they chose what to print, what not to, and how to spin it

I wonder how much the swift boat stuff really moved the needle in 2004. I suspect the only people who believed it were those prone to believe it (read: Republicans who didn’t like Kerry for the sole fact that he was and is a Democrat).

I don’t think attacks on one’s service (or lack there of) really moves the dial anymore. It didn’t hurt Clinton in 1992 or 1996 when he was running against WWII veterans, one of whom was severely injured in the war. Nor did it help McCain in either 2000 or 2008.

The Republicans have disparaged those who served in combat for years: think of the disgraceful treatment of McCain in the 2000 South Carolina primary and the abhorrent treatment of Max Cleland in his 2002 election, as well as the swift-boating of Kerry. I really think it was Kerry campaign’s tepid response to the attacks on his reputation that did him in. He was portrayed as an elitist who didn’t connect with average citizens and that portrayal stuck. His heroism was eliminated as a factor and that fatally damaged his prospects.

Citizen Diplomacy

“citizen diplomacy” is to foreign policy what lynch mobs are to the justice system…

Citizen Diplomacy is going on vacation or studying abroad and meeting some locals and having a good time with them. Espionage is going abroad and getting involved in the internal politics of another country in order to get outcomes favorable to your home country.

If it’s using a different call sign, it could be that he’s not on the plane. Technically, I believe any American plane that the president is on is designated Air Force One. The “official” AF1 planes get different call signals when in air and the president is not on board.

That said, given the shutdown, those planes should be grounded. The guys on Pod Save America mentioned that during a shut down in the Obama Administration Congressional Democrats were ready to revolt when Obama was debating whether or not to go ahead with a diplomatic trip to Asia during a shut down.

I lived through that tumultuous time and totally understand how almost everyone who could tried to find an escape from serving. Bush 43 got into the National Guard to avoid service in Vietnam. I marched against the war and my parents, both proud veterans who served overseas during WWII, would have supported my brother if he fled the country to avoid service. But my brother was lucky like Clinton and won the draft lottery.

In any case, it is Trump’s doctor lying on his behalf while he was running for President that is the real scandal.

re: #333 gocart mozart

Lincoln negotiated the crisis by distinguishing between soldiers in battle and war criminals. First he demanded the Santee trial records and ordered the military judges to separate Indians who had fought in battles from those who had committed murder or rape against civilians. Then he reviewed the records and concluded that 265 of the Santee had been convicted only of going to war against the United States. Although these men had not been party to a formal declaration of war, the Lincoln administration decided they were nonetheless covered by the traditional rules of war that prohibited the execution of prisoners. President Lincoln commuted their sentences. The 38 Indians who had been convicted of murder or of rape against civilians, though, fell outside the traditional protections accorded to enemy combatants. Their sentences stood.

Lincoln, it seems, was a man ahead of his time.

According to wikipedia, in March 2000, Clinton flew on an unmarked Gulfstream with another plane using the AF1 call signal following the same route a few minutes later. But it appears that AF1 is the call signal for most planes carrying the president.

Wrong.
They never use the AF1 callsign for combat zone visits. Though, in recent history they have tended not to use a VC-25A for at least the inbound flight. Using instead a C-32 (757) or a C-17 to draw less attention

Even the troops have to start seeing that, especially if the reports from the field were to be believed that they were besides themselves at how we just screwed our local allies, like the Kurds and others fighting against IS and terrorists we continue to go after in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world.

Unless/until these alleged torts are recognized by a court of law and/or a legislature, they are not torts (see Intentional and/or Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress). In the meantime, we have plenty of existing torts which you may choose to allege.

A little help for the soon-to-be former Senator:

1. She beat a member of the Democratic House Leadership in a primary
2. She’s not afraid to promote policies in which she actually believes
3. She’s young
4. She’s not terrified of arguing for her preferred policies

Without context, I can’t tell whether McCaskil’s attacking or defending. E.g. “I’m a little confused why she’s become every right-winger’s nightmare.” After all, she’s far from the only progressive in the last election.

Depends on if you consider “Academic All-American” on a CV to be a material fact. Not sure I would. If he’d lied about positions he’s held in the practice of law, or having a law degree, that would probably be a material fact.

Without context, I can’t tell whether McCaskil’s attacking or defending. E.g. “I’m a little confused why she’s become every right-winger’s nightmare.” After all, she’s far from the only progressive in the last election.

From the article:

“She’s now talked about a lot,” McCaskill said of the 29-year-old. “I’m not sure what she’s done yet to generate that kind of enthusiasm, but I wish her well. I hope she hangs the moon.”

“The rhetoric is cheap,” she added. “Getting results is a lot harder.”

The two-term Democratic senator also warned Ocasio-Cortez not to ignore the plight of white working-class voters who have distanced themselves from the Democratic Party in recent years.

“I hope she also realizes that the parts of the country that are rejecting the Democratic Party, like a whole lot of white working-class voters, need to hear about how their work is going to be respected, and the dignity of their jobs, and how we can really stick to issues that we can actually accomplish something on,” McCaskill said.

It’s, I think, a generational thing, mostly.

Yup. I’ve never done anything as far as I am aware which might be construed as “immoral.” And it’s not like I go round the town on Saturdays knocking on doors preaching the Gospel of Nothing either.

Maybe it’s because I’m on the outside, but the reason she’s in the news is obvious: the GOP wants to paint the Democrats as socialists. And as for your concern about whites that have left the party, the reason we can’t have nice things is that those whites think we should only take care of them, and as long as we entertain that idea, we can’t take care of anyone.

re: #400 Charles Johnson

Surprise…. even though there were people noticing that Trump was radio-silent for most of the day, the presidential airwing was missing a significant asset, and spotters found it flying towards the Middle East.

It’s clear that Trump had to be shamed into visiting the troops - to use them as a prop - all while propping up his corrupt admin.

Those same soldiers know that Trump’s undermined their ongoing mission, and made it harder for the US to work with people who would be open to working with the US in the future. This is Trump at his worst, but typical for Trump - using the troops as disposable heroes. The moment he gets back on AF1, he’ll forget about them, and continue to undermine our national security.

I was an infant when Eisenhower was president. Had he not run as a Republican, the party was in danger of collapsing.

Since then, not so much.
