I can smell the GOP flop sweat from my house.

Though doesn’t whatever funding resolution Speaker Pelosi can introduce/pass in the House have to also get through the Senate?
So Trump can’t “veto” anything until he gets a final approved bill.
And try as they might, blaming Nancy for the “President“‘s making his stupid Wall the sticking point of the entire Federal budget isn’t gonna fly - though the GOP will, I’m sure, do their best to flog that line.

If Mitch McConnell wants to act as Trump’s human shield that’s his choice, but everyone will know that he’d be refusing to allow a vote on something that the Senate passed unanimously three weeks previously out of cowardly subservience to our tantrum throwing teratoma of a President.

You would probably use less room if you just stuck it in a deep freeze.

Does that monster have a fan?

Yes but the fans come off to mount the HSF. The first memory slot and the first M.2 SSD slot are under the heatsink. There is a fan in the middle, and I had to rotate the HSF so the outside fan is to the back of the motherboard because it covered 3 of the 4 memory slots.

It has to dissipate 250 watts. While the CPU is rated at 94 watts the i7 9700 under full load generates 230 watts of heat.

Eileen Farrell was a staple of the opera lover - she must have been recorded very many times, including cross-over songs.

A bit before my time, but I remember seeing her on TV decades ago.

We’re at least 120 years into recorded music by now, and I wonder what the long term effects have been to humanity, that we now rely on recorded music.

Any Democrat who became Speaker would be such a target. Remember: Obama mistakenly thought he would have more success working with Republicans because he wasn’t a hated Clinton. The RW conspiracy machine targets any Democrat who seems to be acquiring broad support or fame or power. Of course, the party of white males does take particular pleasure in insulting women and minorities — but any Democrat will do.

Gaming in 4k. My last MB had some screwed up CPU socket that would not mate with any HSF and would overheat at 40% CPU load so I have 10 years of gaming urge built up.

Gotcha. I sometimes check out tech channels on YouTube when I’m bored, and am amazed at the water-cooling options now. I have no need for extravagant cooling mechanisms, but they sure look cool. (So to speak)

Dude, you spend half of your musical life tuning, and the rest playing out of tune. Playing on the tenor clef is the least of your problems.

;-)

It’s an old joke, but still funny. Good for Lute, and Chirango players, too.

It’s Trump. Of course he denies it and his minions in Congress and throughout the country regurgitate this denial. There’s a reason the WP invented a new category of Pinocchios just for Trump.

Of course, his team is also going with the other tactic of saying the wall is essential to protect this country and the Democrats are for open borders and against security.

That’s what I’m saying. It sounds like she is playing longer strings with that tone.
Then again, you only need to add 4cm to a Telecaster to enter baritone range. However, at the short range you get muddy overtones, like on a shorter Gibson guitar. I’m stumped.

Edit: not enough frets on that guitar to be anything but standard.

ANd we should say the absolute worst way to do border security is a physical wall. It’s a defense where the terrorists ARENT’. It does nothing for cyber attacks. It does nothing for over-extended visas. It does nothing for American enemies coming from the north.

The wall focuses on people who are weaker, poorer, less knowledgeable and less endowed than any of our real enemies.

A wall diverts resources from defending from the enemies who are attacking us. It PREVENTS real border security.

Trump and his dumber supporters never advanced to abstract thought as youngsters. They’re still stuck in concrete thought, which requires solid objects they can see and touch. A wall is the only thing they can really understand.

re: #29 Hecuba’s daughter

Of course, his team is also going with the other tactic of saying the wall is essential to protect this country and the Democrats are for open borders and against security.

A thirty foot wall will result in the construction of thirty-two foot ladders. The wall will require a huge number of personnel to keep those ladders from being used to scale the wall. The wall itself will require upwards of $20 to $30 billion to build, not counting the property the will have to be purchased under imminent domain. Protecting the wall against thirty-two foot ladders will be hugely more costly on an annual basis because of the people needed to protect it.

In addition, history has shown that fixed walls simply do not work. Every single one has failed, from the times of the Romans, to the Han Chinese, to the French Maginot line, to Berlin. They all failed. Walls are fixed structures. Every time, people have found a work-around, which has made the walls redundant and useless.

They don’t work. They’re a waste of money, time, and are s stupid reaction to not pursue political solutions. The Israelis are starting to come to grips with this right now. The wall along the West Bank has not brought peace.

Pelosi has got fact-based logic and history on her side. It’s a winning argument.

Good night, all. Talk with you tomorrow. Sweet dreams.

The alternative would require McConnell telling Trump to STFU and sign the clean CR and that’s that. Whether McConnell has the fortitude to do that is highly questionable.

The eminent domain lawsuits filed by pissed-off property owners will likely tie up construction for a decade and by the time that’s all settled, Trump won’t be POTUS anymore and the whole fatuous project will have been cancelled.

The eminent domain lawsuits filed by pissed-off property owners will likely tie up construction for a decade and by the time that’s all settled, Trump won’t be POTUS anymore and the whole fatuous project will have been cancelled.

And how much money will be wasted and never recovered by those property owners?!

Oh my goodness, I can here the whinge half way across the country, and Wonkette puts it into perspective.

For our poor little “discriminated against” FOX model, Ezra Levant set up a GoFundMe account to help her get an apartment (because apparently FOX News Host doesn’t pay enough). Perhaps she should take the Office of Personnel Management’s advice and work out a barter arrangement with a prospective landlord.

(Note Ezra Levant isn’t going to dip into his considerable wealth to help her out. That’s your job, conservatives. In the meantime, you’ll have to choose between that and Trump’s wall fund, which now has $18,000,000.)

HOLY GRIFT! Send This Fox Creep Money For … Literally No Reason At All (hilarity of victimhood at the link)

Don’t let it be said that conservatives are unfeeling and incapable of compassion. They might collectively shrug when an immigrant child dies but their tear ducts activate at full blast whenever someone like them is mildly inconvenienced. Pardes Seleh, described as a “prominent conservative commentator” by very kind people, has become the poster girl for liberal cruelty in a time when decent people just want to kick back and relax while Donald Trump makes America great again.

Seleh tweeted Thursday morning that for the “second time” this week, she’d been “rejected from an apartment/house in DC” because she worked at Fox. She’s also written for RedAlert Politics and The Daily Wire. We should clarify that Seleh wasn’t turned down by a landlord but by individuals looking for a roommate. She attached to the tweet the very polite email rejection she’d received.

“Thank you for your interest Pardes. After perusing your various journalistic and social media posts, it’s pretty clear your politics views are diametrically opposed to ours (and we hate Fox). Hopefully you will find a place where that will be a good fit.”

In particular, she responded to a gay couple looking for a roommate. I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t want someone who works for a network which objectively hates them and posts tweets with an alleged study saying if you are unruly at two years old you will grow up to be a thief and a liberal.

She complains that liberal gays who won’t accept her as a roommate leaves her feeling as if she’s being treated like the Nazis. (You lose, Ms. Seleh, thanks for playing.)

The American Conservative’s Rod Dreher says it’s time for the “bake the cake bigots” to stand up for Ms. Saleh.

You’d think if FOX was paying so poorly, that she’d be all on board for Democratic proposals for a living wage.

Or, she’s lying and trying to be yet another conservative victim for attention (and grifting).

I keep seeing the whataboutism derp from conservatives over Trump’s hat-sigining with troops versus Michelle Obama signing a copy of

Esquire magazine with her picture on the cover.

Those are not the same (aside from what was apparently screening since the Trump visit was blazingly white). Mrs. Obama was not signing campaign paraphernalia.

Trump’s stunt put enlisted personnel in a position of being prosecuted under the UCMJ (Article 92, Disobeying a Lawful Order—specifically, no politicking in uniform). The officers who allowed this travesty should be charged for conduct unbecoming an officer and if they ordered them to be there giving illegal orders.

Dr. Jesus… Oh Lord this thread.

If Jesus is involved in everything (or controls everything, or God does), such as ensuring you survive a medical condition, then he also causes the bad things (stillbirths, childhood cancer, birth defects, mass murder by gun, &c).

The people who post those sorts of graven images (prohibited by the X Commandments Suggestions) never want their deity to be responsible for the bad stuff even though they claim he is responsible for everything (such as a doctor spending years in school learning his or her skills).

I’m going to now. It was just running over an hour ago. I found the milkhouse heater was actually turned to 1/3, so I turned it to full. Hopefully it won’t be frozen long.

Topside, my wife is running the oven at 400 degrees. (Our kitchen is not heated, only the front room with a floor heater from the Fifties.) Hopefully that will help (if nothing else, it will warm the kitchen.)

Our plumbing is weird.

When the village replaced every home’s lead pipe inlets from the city pipes, the way the inlet got hooked up was more like a computer star network.

The inlet comes from the street to the back of the cellar, then everything splits off from that (outdoor hose, kitchen, bathtub, bathroom sink, r/o unit). Each is separately fed from the inlet pipe pretty much all from the same point.

The hot water feed also comes out from that star network point. The outlet of the hot water heater is connected normally (in series), with the kitchen being the last on the line (that’s the pipe that usually freezes, the kitchen cold water doing it was the first time since we’ve lived here).

Yes you do.

I’m assuming you’re on well/septic and if so letting a faucet drip is expensive. Hubby (the engineer) said get an “electrical heat trace” on the pipes that get cold and insulate them. The trace provides very low electrical resistance, which warms the pipes, and insulate over that trace (you must insulate the trace!) You’re pipes will never freeze up.

Hubs says the trace isn’t expensive and the insulation is even less expensive BUT insulation alone will likely not stop the freezing as you have areas in your house that are not heated and NE gets really cold.

In a modern house the pipes are probably all in nice safe warm spaces after they enter the house—it’s the pipe under the front lawn you have to worry about. In old houses that have been worked on at different times, like yours and ours, anything can happen.

No, I am on city water/sewer. Letting the faucet drip is not expensive (the village water rate is really low, though you wouldn’t have guessed it when we raised the sewage connexion fee by $0.50 a month last year on the village board to cover increases in postage mailing out bills and a rate rise from the trash company).

I will get with the plumber and look into electrical heat trace.

Funny what assumptions give you. I thought with you being in a small village you’d all be on well and septic.

The trace is apparently a tiny filament that you put on the pipes before putting on the insulation. It sounded like something ** I ** could do so I’m not sure if you need a plumber. But I can’t say for sure.

I’m the town water system operator. I have a license and everything! Take water test samples for bacteria and chemicals, operate the wellhouses and pumps, inspect the water tower to make sure it doesn’t fall over on the village board chairwoman’s house, that sort of thing.

The water tower called me up tonight - last year it was calling when it was cold and lonely about every four hours until we got that fixed. This time it seems the maintenance mechanic was working on something and turned off the water pumps. When the water tower got too low, it called.

This is…….gonna make for an interesting year ahead, that’s for damned sure:

Anibal Romero, a Newark attorney who represents several undocumented immigrants who used to work at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, said Friday he recently met with investigators from the state attorney general’s office and handed over fraudulent green cards and Social Security numbers that management at the club allegedly procured and gave his clients, Victorina Morales and Sandra Diaz.

Both women allege management at the Trump club knew they were undocumented and set them up with fake work documents.

In Morales’ case, Romero said a supervisor compiled all of her information and then took her photo in the laundry room of the club.

A few days later, the boss — who’s not being named by The News — told Morales he had received her fake documents and said he would hold on to them.

Anyhow regarding Wall Street, Wall Street is definitely flawed and needs regulations for sure but the Sirota-Sanders way of attacking everyone who works there as a greedy capitalist is sleazy shit. Just as their especially Sanders tendency to ignore bigotry in the working class. And you’re getting this from someone whose family background is much more working class than corporate banking.

The Trump Organization is nothing more than a criminal enterprise. Faking green cards and Social Security numbers, and then giving these fake green cards and Social Security numbers to its undocumented employees? And then turning around and blackmailing the undocumented employees with these fake documents? How much did Trump know and did Trump, in fact, sanction this practice?

Remember that Trump golf clubs are directly run by Donald Trump; these aren’t licensing deals, at least not in the United States. The President is not only visiting a property he owns that violates Federal law, there’s a possibility that he’s also likely responsible for the violations.

This makes House of Cards look like Sesame Street.

This isn’t merely an impeachable offense - this is outright organized criminal activity…..it’s human trafficking.

Of course! Why did I not associate that with your water system? I for some reason thought you were doing that for like an aquifer.

So your still doing that? Are they paying you now?

They’re not paying me.

As for the aquifer, before we moved here the village only charged for having a water hookup (no charge for water). When the water project was done in 2011 to replace all the village’s water pipes (and pipes going into homes), the state mandated the village had to meter water and charge (something) for it, so they could measure extraction from the Ogallala Aquifer versus recharge by rain and runoff from the mountains.

That water project (thank goodness I wasn’t here for that) had people coming to village board meetings armed, breaking out in fistfights, &c. Folks were really upset about paying for water.

Our rate is $3.75 for 1,000 gallons.

It took Mitchell a long while to catch on to the secret of the Republican Party. It cannot govern. It can only react. Its only plan is to dismantle everything the Democrats have created. After that, who knows? The GOP sure don’t. They can’t think that far ahead. I’m sure that’s why Ryan is leaving the House. Now that he’s fucked up the tax system, he’s leaving, because fixing it now is too hard. Same thing Cameron did in the UK.

The one farthest from the inlet pipe—which isn’t always obvious. In our old house, the water entered under the kitchen, went to the upstairs bathroom, doubled back to the kitchen, then went to the (later added) fixtures in the basement.

Sounds like it was plumbed by someone very inexperienced. Who doubles a line back? It should have had a 3/4” main line with 1/2” runs coming off it to the different outlet points.

The people who post those sorts of graven images (prohibited by the X Commandments Suggestions) never want their deity to be responsible for the bad stuff even though they claim he is responsible for everything (such as a doctor spending years in school learning his or her skills).

Under NC state law, an election which has the appearance of being tainted can be rejected by the election commission. That’s exactly what they did. The GOP could have called for a new election (allowed under state law and the election commission would probably have granted that request), instead they’re going for “Democrats stole the election from us!!! There’s no proof there was fraud!!! (Never mind the guy was a convicted felon for insurance fraud, he was referred for prosecution for the same type of behaviour in the past, he admitted doing it to an election commission panel, &c).

I think the ACA will end up being reset and strengthened with the Democrats in the House.

Remember how with about a month to go in the elections all of the Republicans were forced to come out and say they all were for keeping the preexisting conditions allowance going and how important healthcare insurance was, etc. That was due to the polls showing the ACA is liked by a majority of Americans, including conservatives.

And many of them still lost their seats.

The ACA needs to be made a major policy of the Democrats and I think they have the mood of the country ready to support them. In my opinion, anyway.

Looks like there’s going to be Jurassic World 3; apparently, Colin Trevorrow said he wants to explore the theme of not only how we humans would cope in a world where dinosaurs have come back and are running around out there (the ending of JW: Fallen Kingdom) but also the idea that the tech to make such creatures, even custom-made dinos, is also now out there in the world, available to those with the dough to make it happen.

Those are interesting thematic concepts, I have to admit.

re: #99 MsJ

Fascinating supposition. Please let it be true.

[Embedded content]

That’s quite the theory…..and one I quite like.

What’s interesting to me is trying to figure out why this information is coming out now. Quoting from the original article where that revealed the info about Cohen’s phones

A mobile phone traced to President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen briefly sent signals ricocheting off cell towers in the Prague area in late summer 2016, at the height of the presidential campaign, leaving an electronic record to support claims that Cohen met secretly there with Russian officials, four people with knowledge of the matter say.

Very, very little information has been leaked by the Mueller investigation, and now suddenly, four people are giving out the same information about Cohen’s phone?

That’s either quite the coincidence or a deliberate strategy of someone’s choosing to make sure that information reaches both the public, and the subjects under investigation.

Although making predictions, particularly about the future, is always a risky business, I’m going to predict that we’re just days away from a lot of information being released, and a lot of indictments being made public.

The Republicans in Congress were complicit in some of the crimes that were committed, and seemed to be willing to do almost anything to cover them up. While the Republicans were still in power, there was the possibility for any prosecutions by the Mueller investigation to be blocked. With the Democrats taking control of congress, Mueller is a lot more free to move and will be at least until the end of the coming Congress. As prosecutions for the crimes committed by the Republicans are going to have long court processes, he might want to get started as quickly as possible, once the new Congress is sworn in.

Making a wild guess, the four sources revealing that Mueller has evidence that Cohen’s phone was near Prague is an (final?) attempt to get Don Jr to flip and give evidence against his father. Assuming that Michael Cohen has given evidence that he lent that phone to Don Jr, it puts into the open the information that Mueller can prove that Don Jr was in/near Prague to meet the Russians to conspire with them.

Letting that info be known on the 20th of December leaves two weeks before the next Congress is sworn in on the 3rd of January. Which is enough time for Don Jr to talk to his lawyers and come to a decision.

This morning dawned at 4 degrees F (-15.6 degrees C), and I think the high today is supposed to barely clear single digits of degrees F. Later on in the holiday weekend, the lows are projected to dip as far as -10 degrees F (-23.3 degrees C). And that’s not even the coldest it gets around these parts.

We also had a fun ride where Wednesday night it snowed overnight, followed by rain on Thursday (turning the snow into a concrete-like mush that many snowblowers couldn’t handle), followed by MORE snow Thursday night, and then freezing temperatures just to make sure the roads were as fucked up as possible.

Down here in the southern part of the state, not so much; overall, we got maybe 2 inches total. Combined with the rain (see my #177 above), though, it was a royal pain in the ass to deal with.

That would be nice. Unfortunately Republicans don’t do common sense. And they lie. About everything.

But they do like staying elected. If their constituents want improvements in healthcare insurance they will be forced to give in or out they go.

And sure, I would like to see them go, but if they are forced to give in and work with the Democrats, then that is a good thing.

Plus, they really showed their asses by complaining about Obamacare and how they were going to replace it and make it better and they did nothing. Even their own know how that all went. They get control of Congress and the White House and they did nothing but try to sneak a way to kill it against even their own.

Except that wasn’t true in the Senate. Possibly due to the Kavanaugh nomination and Trump’s success in DARVOing by making the judge the victim, several Democrats went down to defeat. The GOP Senate will do whatever their donors tell them — and their donors are hostile to the ACA — as well as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. At least the Pelosi house can protect those programs for the next 2 years. But the budget deficits will eventually force some kind of showdown — and until the Dems take back the Senate and the Presidency, there is no way to deal with that problem using the best tool: repealing the GOP tax cuts for the rich.

Can’t do that with PEX, which is what sounds like AM said the pipes that had burst before were replaced with.

Gay Navy sailor recreates iconic New York WWII kiss photo with his husband but faces brutal homophobic backlash for the modern twist (Daily Mail)

One is stationed aboard the USS The Sullivans.

Bryan Woodington, 33, and husband Kenneth, 30, recreated the iconic WWII kiss
Bryan, a Navy sailor, was returning home to Florida after seven months in the Persian Gulf and Europe when the photo was taken
The couple won a lottery to perform the ceremonial first kiss, a naval tradition
Some have been critical of the couple, while others are embracing the kiss
‘There are people who see the beauty in it,’ Kenneth said. ‘As for those who don’t, have a nice day.’

Bryan Woodington, 33, returned home to Florida after seven months in the Persian Gulf and Europe on December 21, to greet husband of one year Kenneth Woodington, 30.

The couple won a lottery to perform the ceremonial first kiss, a naval tradition that was captured on Jacksonville station News 4 Jax.

But the station reports that not all their viewers were pleased with the same-sex couple’s intimate moment, and News 4 Jax was ‘bombarded’ by hate messages.

and

Once it was broadcast on News4Jax, the hate messages began flooding in.

‘How sad that your station has dropped to such a low as to show a gay couple kissing on your newscast,’ one viewer wrote.

‘I’ll never watch your news again!!!! So long, News4Jax’ another viewer wrote to the station. ‘I thought this was a ”family friendly” news channel.’

‘How many people are now trying to explain to [their] young kids why 2 men were kissing. very disgusting. An ex [viewer],’ another said.

They are not the first same-sex couple: in 2011 two women did the same.

Bryan earned it. As for having to explain it your kiss? That’s a cop out. Kids get that love is love. Homophobic assholes don’t. In fact, I think their kiss is more meaningful than the original 1945 one since the sailor and nurse pictured weren’t lovers.

Last time I checked, that is not a function of the executive branch (other than to veto the enabling legislation). I suspect that executive order could be challenged as unconstitutional since the legislation was already passed.

If we had a competent president, he’d know that. If he had competent advisors, they could tell him. If conservatives in Congress were competent, they could tell him.

Instead, the Dumpster fire of conservative governance continues.

In a way that original ‘45 image could be considered sexual harassment today. I think I remember that all being discussed when the “nurse” (dental assistant) died a few years back.

Anyone else sick of using Chrome as a browser?

I had two tabs open on my older Win 7 machine and Google was unresponsive. I checked and Chrome had 22 processes going on in task manager. The two sites had tons of ads and videos…sports related.

I’m really getting sick of online advertising, even knowing it is important to businesses.

I really think the web engineers need to figure a better way to do all of this. Most of the time people want to get to the content quickly. But no, you can’t actually use the scroll bar or anything you want because the ads loading take precedence.

How much freaking RAM do we have to have anyway?

Sorry for the rant due to frustration. Arrrgh.

one man’s anecdata
ive used chrome for years - mostly happily and without incident
chrome is never not on
same 7-10 tabs open all the time (including lgf)
sometimes it gets up to 15 - rarely

i only have problems with two sites and they are regular and consistent so i know my workarounds

all my software plays nice and without complaint while chrome chugs away

Down here in the southern part of the state, not so much; overall, we got maybe 2 inches total. Combined with the rain (see my #177 above), though, it was a royal pain in the ass to deal with.

Same over here is Hayward. The rain really messed everything up - had a skating rink instead of a parking lot with a good inch or three of ice in spots. Not my idea of fun. 9 degrees now so I’m not going to do the range trip I’d planned for the day.

Yesterday, the National Review published an essay by Katherine Timpf titled “Student Found to Have Violated Title IX by Asking Another Student on a Date,” in which she went on and on about how very dreadful it was that a student was found guilty of stalking another because he simply asked her on a date she did not want to go on. The National Review has since retracted said essay because — as was plainly evident in the deposition Timpf linked to in the piece — said student had actually done a lot more than innocently ask a girl out on a date.

The Guardian -
Trump-Russia: Republican probe of alleged FBI bias ends ‘with a whimper’

Committee chairs issue just a letter rather than final report after inquiry that was condemned as ploy to undermine Robert Mueller

Republicans have quietly and unceremoniously ended their congressional investigation of whether the FBI and Justice Department were biased in their handling of inquiries into Hillary Clinton’s emails and Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.

House judiciary chairman Robert Goodlatte and oversight chairman Trey Gowdy, who are retiring next week, sent a letter rather than a full report to the Justice Department and the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. It wraps up an inquiry that was conducted mostly behind closed doors but also in public as Republican lawmakers often criticised interview subjects later and suggested they were conspiring against Trump.

Democrats have blasted the GOP-led congressional inquiry, saying it was merely meant as a distraction from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Its termination comes less than a week before Republicans cede the House majority to Democrats.

Goodlatte and Gowdy say in their letter that they reviewed thousands of documents and conducted interviews that “revealed troubling facts which exacerbated our initial questions and concerns”. They call on the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate further. A separate report issued this year by the Justice Department’s own internal watchdog found there was no evidence that the then FBI chief James Comey or the department were motivated by political bias toward either candidate.

Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the judiciary committee, and Elijah Cummings, top Democrat on the oversight panel, are expected to formally end the investigation when they take power in January. Nadler has called it “nonsense”.

California’s Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said on Friday evening that the Republican investigation was ending “not with a bang, but with a Friday, buried-in-the-holidays whimper, and one foot out the door”.

The first season of The Punisher saw the Marvel vigilante going up against a corrupt CIA operative and a former ally who conspired to kill his family. But the latest villain in the Netflix series will be slightly more topical.

In a new report from Collider, we finally learned more about Frank Castle’s latest foe for The Punisher Season 2, a character named John Pilgrim played by actor Josh Stewart. The villain has been described as Alt-Right, a term that’s associated with white nationalism and extreme conservatives.

“On the exterior, [John Pilgrim] is a man who is a Christian Fundamentalist who had a rage, a violent side of him,” Stewart said. “It’s buried deep. I think where this is all headed, that sort of side of him is going to resurface a bit.”

Pilgrim is said to contrast Billy Russo, who will also return for Season 2, as a creepier and more uptight foe for Frank Castle.

I think I won’t be suing that site anymore. It has turned into a complete mess with all the ad links and some of their ads have the close button and it doesn’t close. Also the last few months of the year it has thrown up warnings about viruses in some of the links.

re: #312 William Lewis

Ok, I dig that. The next question I’d have is if you run any kind of ad blocking software? I have only a very tiny handful of sites I white list. Perhaps that would help? I do know that the autoplay videos on SI (my sportsball web of choice) drive me nuts. That might get you through till you can get a mobo with greater RAM capacity?

I do have other machines with more RAM loaded. It is just that at one time browsers were not overcome with websites that try to get everything out on the front page.

I like my old machine…I don’t want to retire it when it does a fine job overall.

My biggest beef though is still the way all the damn ads load from outside servers and sometimes those servers are slow to load and mess everything up.

As I said in my original post, there has got to be a better way to handled the ads. I think they are being too slick by reading into your cookies to select ads that pertain to you. It takes too much time and the fact all of that has to happen before you can do something like scroll to read the damn content you came to the site for to me is not good for either the user or the ad agencies and the companies they represent.

I know a lot of people that hate all the ads. What good does that do for the advertisers? I think it is defeating.

And as was discussed here the other day, there is still a lot of questions about online ad costs and how well they work.

I made the switch off Chrome a year ago when I moved from a MacBook to PC after many years. Embraced MS Edge. No regrets yet and only some minor downsides. Went from Chrome/Safari approach on MacBook and iPhone to an Edge/Safari approach on an Alienware PC and iPhone. Smooth sailing in my Google free (well I have a gmail phone app for one email account) world.

The only thing about MS Edge is it shares copious amounts of information with Microsoft. Searching “privacy settings in Microsoft Edge” will help you secure the obscure settings Microsoft doesn’t really point out to you.

Especially this one:

Each Microsoft account has a unique advertising ID that lets the company collect information about you and deliver a personalized ad experience across different platforms. If you sign into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, those personalized ads will follow you onto your computer — you’ll see them in apps and possibly in the operating system itself (in the Start menu, for example).

Websites are getting worse. Even big companies are spending more money adding ads than making their sites usable.

Not just adverts but trackers as well (such as Doubleclick). Every one of those trackers has to be downloaded from a different Website, which slows down not the browser, but the Website.

That’s why my wife’s Websites load so fast (since she has no adverts and no trackers), while other blogs have a noticeable difference in time to load (regardless of the browser used).

Even when using a blocker such as NoScript, the blocker sees the call to a Website and spends some amount of time substituting a dummy cookie or tracker so the Website doesn’t break.

They can be shut off, as the CNet article notes. The problem is Microsoft doesn’t tell you how to shut those adverts off.

Moreover, Microsoft programs are very promiscuous with other Microsoft programs.

For example, Microsoft’s individual ID allows Cortana to display things in a search which are tailored to your computer. I have Office for Business 2016, which means such things can be displayed in Office programs.

If you have a wireless router which is open (or others have the password for it), Microsoft Windows computers around you will download updates from your computer rather than Microsoft (it saves them bandwidth). That’s another privacy setting which can be shut off.

If you have Windows 10, searching for all the privacy settings to secure your computer is one of the first things you should do.

366
Anymouse 🌹  Dec 29, 2018 • 1:00:42pm

re: #365 Anymouse 🌹

The CNet article lists five. This article lists all.

The Complete Guide to Windows 10 Privacy Settings (Goes to Make Use Of), more at the link:

Windows 10 has long come under attack for its approach to user privacy. When Windows 10 hit the shelves back in 2015, numerous features came under immediate attack from privacy advocates and Microsoft critics alike. However, Microsoft stuck to its guns in regard to alleged privacy infringements, adding greater control over individual elements but not completely removing any of the perceived privacy infringing features.

The major issue leveled at Windows 10 concerns data collection. Is Microsoft overstepping the boundaries of operating system data collection? Misleading stories regarding integrated keyloggers and spyware certainly do not help. However, nor does Microsoft’s addition of advertising within File Explorer (this is easily turned off) and vaguely worded EULAs that worry users about constant system scanning (the EULA in question is not permitting this behavior).

For example, this article on USDA programs and many others which won’t be paid in my regional paper.

Shutdown could affect federal farm aid payments (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

The problem is not “people having their heads in the sand.” The problem is fifty years of Republicans training voters to believe “both sides are equally bad” or “Democrats are bad.” Propaganda is a helluva drug. (This doesn’t just apply to Democrats and Republicans, see also religion.)

Beyond the FSA, several other USDA agencies, including meat, poultry and grain inspectors along with import and export inspectors, have continued to work without pay. Other offices, such as the National Agriculture Statistics Service, have shuttered their doors, furloughed employees and delayed releasing scheduled reports until funding is re-established.

Households who receive monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (also known as food stamps) will still receive benefits for January. Most other domestic nutrition assistance programs, such as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, WIC and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, will continue to operate at the state and local level with any funding and commodity resources that remain available. Additional federal funds and commodities will not be provided during the shutdown.

Child Nutrition programs, including School Lunch, School Breakfast, Child and Adult Care Feeding, Summer Food Service and Special Milk will continue operations into February.

However, payout of farm loans, disaster payments and other forms of farm aid will likely cease until after the government reopens.

If I take absentee ballots in NC-9 and promise to deliver them to the ballot box, then throw them away in a Dumpster, that’s election fraud.

Still not seeing the direct correlation to how that applies to GFM.

Maybe they can sue him for fraud, if a promise was involved.

A promise? From Donald Trump??
The invitation solicitation probably has more weasel-wording, caveats and legal “outs” than a gray-market washer’s “warranty”.

And as for the first bit, they’ll have to get in at end of a VERY long line…

Not to mention a NDA.

(This doesn’t just apply to Democrats and Republicans, see also religion.)

i think we may have gone down two different roads

no doubt all those people and programs are being hurt.

im only focusing on the farmers who, yes, i assume, overwhelmingly voted republican, then lost their crop market (which will never come back), and now their loans/aid to cover the lost markets are being delayed as well

specifically, though i was responding to 384
“And those who vaguely supported him but might not know about his cruelty and such are dragged along with the rest of them.”

and i’ll say again - by now, almost 2019 you cant not know
im not saying people, even R’s arent getting hurt…

im saying they either actively know and endorse his cruelty or else their ignorance three years in is willful

Farmers risk loss of federal payments, loans, from shutdown

And they won’t blame trump or republicans - those nasty democrats are taking their money.

This bigot jumped out at me:
“I’ll never watch your news again!!!! So long, News4Jax’ another viewer wrote to the station. ‘I thought this was a “family friendly” news channel.’”

As though gay people don’t have families; obviously because, well, they’re not human.
