The FDA’s shutdown directly affects the bottom line of food manufacturers; there are companies out there that will not be able to further advance their product lines because my office is furloughed. Quite a few of those companies have very high powered K street law firms behind them. Of course, my perspective is very specialized and means little to most people, but my tiny slice of the shutdown isn’t unique in pissing off corporate America. I am curious how big money can push a change is the orange shit-goblin’s perspective, or if that outside push will have no effect?

Pence would pretty much put up the same judicial appointments as Trump would, perhaps better ones as he’d be reading off the Heritage checklist rather than the guys that Donny heard about off Faux. And his legislative agenda is DOA, even if he could move most of the bills past a Dem filibuster, Pelosi is going to stomp them flat in the House. The fights over those would play out much the same whether it was Donny or Pence in the White House.

The real window to get anything done has come and gone. Mitch now has no incentive to keep Donny in office and every incentive to consider a removal vote if it can be done under the cover of a very negative Mueller report.

In my experience most GOP donors don’t actually have that good a sense of their own economic self interest. Like most people they have an ideology, and the assumptions underpinning that ideology all too often do not comport themselves with reality, and when that happens these people tend to towards reevaluating their concept of reality instead of reexamining the assumptions behind the original hypothesis.

All that to say I don’t expect the Koch’s, Mercer’s, etc to change their tune any time soon.

The Koch’s are 100% pragmatic and realistic. Their main interests are lowered taxes, and reduced regulation. They lie about global warming because some of their untapped reserves are under permafrost and it benefits them for it to melt (and none of their real estate interests are coastal); they don’t care at all about social issues, they just tolerate the religious crap because it provides voters.

The Mercers… I think they actually buy into the religious bullshit. They actually care about social issues, in addition to their financial interests.

The Chinese have a similar bias toward belief that they (the Han) could not possibly be descended from people from Africa, and that the Han are the bestest ethnic group in East Asia, despite being invaded and occupied at different times by the Mongols, the Manchu, the Japanese and others. It’s not just white people who want to believe they are somehow special.

Sarah Kendzior has also noted this habit of Trump and likens it to the disinformation campaigns of autocracies, which rewrite history or delete entire segments of history to suit their hold on power. It’s hard to say if Trump does his disinformation deliberately — which presupposes some kind of strategy — or whether it’s just a useful habit he developed in his youth. It’s a tendency even his lawyers and associates noted long before he started his campaign. Trump says whatever suits the occasion, whether it be true or not. He is a man completely divorced from objective reality.

Clearly, that’s a power others, like Bannon, can use to their advantage. Trump has a following, and his followers believe anything that comes out of mouth or his Twitter account. If he said the Earth is flat and the Sun a big glowing disk of fire, his disciples would accept it as objective truth. So, when he says everyone coming from Central America is a hardened criminal, even little kids, it’s objectively real to his disciples. Show them photos of bedraggled, starving kids with their moms, and they will see invaders coming to take their homes and jobs away.

Conceivably, Putin saw this power of Trump to alter reality and has decided to use it to his advantage, too.

Alphabetic languages have the advantage of being flexible and more easily learned, especially if they use the Roman alphabet. OTOH Chinese can convey a host of meanings more compactly, once you learn several thousand characters. I’m lucky if I recognize a few hundred.

im in a wind down / taper before the big Dopey, and coincidentally am on a streak of consecutive days run
today i realized a sort of phenomenon related to these two things coinciding

- as the runs are getting shorter and easier, extending the consecutive streak becomes easier as well
- of course it does
- consider the opposite - building miles. adding 10% a week and trying to not take even one day off…

this kind of relationship is obvious once you see it

I’m not so sure. These sorts of propaganda blitzes have happened in the not-so-distant past (Germany, Rwanda, &c).

The media is mostly controlled by a handful of corporations. They are not interested in truth, they are interested in profit.

Since I don’t have a television set, tell me how many Democrats are on the Sunday political shows today to argue why the Democrats are opposed to giving a single dime to a monument to racism which was promised another country would pay for, versus Republicans on those same shows blaming all of this on Democrats.

The Republicans finally realized that the Goodlatte-Gowdy letter was the end of the road for them in the House and the new House majority was going to control the narrative when it came to investigations. You may be getting your Senate committees mixed up.

The Senate Intelligence Committee would take over any investigation of Hillary’s emails. They are overseers of the federal government and its agencies. They also oversee the FBI and their findings.

Thankfully the Republican in charge of that is Richard Burr who for the most part acts like a real US Senator. You can tell by the fact they are still investigating the Trump mess and doing it in mostly legit ways.

If you watch Burr, you can tell he wasn’t real impressed with people like Jason Chaffetz, Trey Gowdy and the Free-to-be-dumb Caucus.

Graham would be the Senate Judiciary Committee and they are in charge of overseeing the Department of Justice. That is why they had the big deal with Kavanaugh. They also can look into the FBI as an office, not necessarily what it investigates.

So in a way, Graham can’t dig into Hillary. He will be worried about all the shit coming at Trump and the role of people like the Attorney General and his underlings.

Yeah he showed his true colors on Kavanaugh and ACA. If anyone’s going to get away with primarying Trump, it would probably be a governor like Kasich but I don’t see anyone primarying Trump. Trump is more liked by Republican voters than disliked. The person who primaries Trump has to realize that it will be career suicide if they primary Trump but it will also take out Trump more easily than had they stayed put. Is Kasich that person? I honestly doubt it given OA and BD’s stories about how arrogant and how much he wants POTUS but that’s what it would take.

If breaking the two party stranglehold were truly the goal, they’d run every seat they could but they don’t and I think it’s because of what DM said, they want attention brought to their issues and I must add, a lot of those issues are legitimate ones we should be talking about but don’t insult us who vote for one of the major parties as “sheep” when your party/ideology has a clearly different end game. And frankly other countries technically have two party systems too but coalition governance in parliaments strengthen the third parties. We don’t have coalitions in Congress.

The biggest problem I see with parliamentary systems is when a party does not get an absolute majority. They then have to dig up coalition partners from minor parties to form a government.

That leaves the majority party beholden to every last demand of the minority partner if they want to remain in government (see: UK with the Conservative Party beholden to the DUP, Israel with Likud beholden to a bunch of minor religious parties, &c)

In effect, the majority party in the coalition then is beholden to the minority party’s voters, not their own voters.

Those are the sorts of laws I fear here as an atheist. Libertarians and conservatives will argue “well muh property rights; if you don’t like that business you can go to another one.”

The usual argument I give to that is we have one store in my town. If they discriminate against atheists, then there is one store sixteen miles away. If that store (whose owner also knows me) discriminates against atheists, the next stores are sixty miles away.

The same would apply to any disfavoured group.

That article on religious discrimination in adoptions leads to The Intercept. The final paragraph notes this isn’t just about Jews.

Even in the Miracle Hill’s online application for interested foster parents it’s clear they intend for children to be raised in a Christian home.

In addition to basic information, the application asks for “denominational affiliation,” a pastor’s name, phone number, and “a brief, personal testimony of your faith/salvation,” and that of a spouse, if applicable. If you and your partner are the same sex, Miracle Hill will not allow you to adopt children in their network, according to lawyers, foster parents and employees at agencies who have worked closely with Miracle Hill.

As for those video doorbells, you don’t even have to have an existing doorbell. If you don’t they contain a battery you can recharge every 6-12 months. If you do have an existing system, it will charge from that. I am just trying to reuse some of the existing hardware, because it’s there.

I think that Trump definitely likes general. For Mattis, he probably heard that his nickname was “Mad Dog” and he thought that he had to have the guy even though he knew next to nothing about Mattis’s values. A cut cable line was worth 10 points, whether we tried to fix it or not. We could try to splice it if we found the cut. Or we could maybe run a temp line. But you can’t run one across a neighbor’s lawn or across a sidewalk or street. That’s what happened with the guy who was adding a swimming pool. The diggers had cut his line. I knew before I walked in. But he still wanted me to come stare at the blank cable box while we talked. I did because the Fox News cult loves to call in complaints about their rude techs.

The tap, where the cable line connects, was in a neighboring yard. There was a dog door on the back patio of that yard. I like dogs, but I’m not an idiot. I told him it would be a week, 7 to 10 days to get a new line. He said through his teeth he needed an exact day. I gave him my supervisor’s number. This whole time, his wife was in the kitchen wiping a clean counter.

I was filling out the work orders and emailing my supervisor to give him a heads-up on a possible call from a member of every cable tech’s favorite rage cult, when his wife knocked on my van window. She stepped back and called me “ma’am.” Which was nice. Her husband with the tucked-in polo shirt had asked my name and I told him Lauren. He heard Lawrence because it fit what he saw and asked if he could call me Larry. Guys like that use your name as a weapon. “Larry, explain to me why I had to sit around here from 1 to 3 waiting on you and you show up at 3:17. Does that seem like good customer service to you, Larry? And now you’re telling 7 to 10 days? Larry, I’m getting really tired of hearing this shit.” Guys like that, it was safer to just let them think I was a man.

She said she was sorry about him. I said, “It’s fine.” I said there really wasn’t anything I could do. She blinked back the flood of tears she’d been holding since God knows when. She said, “It’s just, when he has Fox, he has Obama to hate. If he doesn’t have that …” She kept looking over her shoulder. She was terrified of him. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I just need him to have Fox.” I got out of my van.

The neighbor with the possible attack dogs wasn’t home. The next-door neighbor wasn’t either. But I looked up his account. I got lucky. He didn’t have TV service. I pulled up his modem on my laptop, perfect signal. There was an attenuator where the cable connected to his house-wiring to tamp down the signal — too much is also a problem. I got enough running a line from the neighbor’s house to theirs so the asshole would be able to get his rage fix from Hannity. I remember leaving a note on the neighbor’s door, some ambiguous lie about their internet service being urgent. I figured the neighbor might be more understanding about internet service than Fox. I sure as fuck was.

I think the approach of confront, explain, persuade has been terribly damaging to ‘science’.
Thirty or more years have demonstrated that the idea that skeptics should face and cultivate in these people an understanding and love for the scientific outlook has not worked.

It legitimizes their crackpot ideas. And worse, it give every new one instant credibility as their lunacy is elevated to be equal with actual provable science right out of the gate.

When we give them legitimacy by explaining, debunking, etc., they then just cloak themselves in the trappings of science and reason we just gave them and then they tear the whole nature of science down.

With respect to global warming, “the overwhelming number of ….” is not science. It is a bad ‘argument’. It doesn’t ‘prove’ anything. It’s a persuader. And, again, it then bestows on the 3% the Galileo myth legitimacy. (what if you’re all wrong and I’m right…could happen.)

Yes, governments and private businesses lobby and control and spin. It doesn’t change the science. Yes I know the dangers of ignoring or ‘waiting’ w/r/t climate change. Still, the tool for ‘winning’, if that’s the word, is not “4 out of 5 dentists surveyed agree”.

It’s the science.

Please beat the Ravens today. God if you guys could knock them out. That would be great. All wishing and hoping aside, I really think you’re on your way up. The key though I think will be finding a HC- I don’t know if Williams is your longterm HC and you’re going to need to continue to draft well. Drafting in the teens is a bit more tougher than in the single digits but if I were a Browns fan, I’d be excited.

One note about the Ring Video Doorbell: The apps from Apple’s App Store work beautifully. I have both loaded to their respective platforms and I have so far very few problems. I tried to get the amazon version and stopped when I read the reviews. One would figure that paying for an app it would be a better one. According to the reviews it is not. So I did not download it. This means that my kindle fire tablet which I purchased to be used for this doorbell is not. Even when I went to the ring website it transferred me back to amazon’s App Store.

So worked the overnight shift at the hotel, filling in. Went to church. Came home and napped a bit. Decided that I really ought to use up the 1 kg pork roast my ex gave me. So I sauted it in the instant pot, added some herbs, some cream of mushroom soup for liquid, roughly chopped carrot and potato and gave the stew button a poke. In less than an hour I’ll have dinner for the next couple of days. My pot was a lizard gift last year and I remain profoundly grateful.

Could you not sideload the standard Android Ring app (which appears to be free)?
