Is Mitt Romney Donald Trump With Better Hair?

Politics • Views: 28,552

Not this guy again.

Mitt Romney: The president shapes the public character of the nation. Trump’s character falls short.

Romney’s getting a lot of praise from the media for this “scathing” op-ed. But I’d just like to highlight one section.

It is not that all of the president’s policies have been misguided. He was right to align U.S. corporate taxes with those of global competitors, to strip out excessive regulations, to crack down on China’s unfair trade practices, to reform criminal justice and to appoint conservative judges. These are policies mainstream Republicans have promoted for years. But policies and appointments are only a part of a presidency.

Yes, he just told you he supports Trump’s trade wars, his rollback of environmental protections, his installation of right wing judges on the Supreme Court and numerous federal districts, and his massive tax cuts for the rich. And he demonstrated in his last presidential campaign that he’s willing to lie shamelessly and exploit conspiracy theories for political benefit. So what exactly makes Romney different from Trump? His “character?” Or is it the hair?

Since I already wrote several tweets immediately after reading Romney’s grand statement, I’ll just repost them here:

There is no GOP potential candidate for the Presidential primary that is worthy of anything but scorn.

Larry Hogan seems like a decent man, and even pretty close to the center politically. But of course, that means he wouldn’t get anywhere in the TrumGOP.

Trump-South wastes no time in dismantling 50 years of environmental progress, much of it paid for in blood.

Jair Bolsonaro launches assault on Amazon rainforest protections

Hours after taking office, Brazil’s new president, Jair Bolsonaro, has launched an assault on environmental and Amazon protections with an executive order transferring the regulation and creation of new indigenous reserves to the agriculture ministry - which is controlled by the powerful agribusiness lobby.

The move sparked outcry from indigenous leaders, who said it threatened their reserves, which make up about 13% of Brazilian territory, and marked a symbolic concession to farming interests at a time when deforestation is rising again.

So, fun fact in the Potential Constitutional Crises category - as of May 2018, 37 states have ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. 38 states are needed for the Amendment to take effect. But, here’s where the potential constitutional crisis starts:

4 states have “repealed” their ratification. Though it’s unclear if such repeals of ratification before fully ratified are valid. Beyond that, Congress put a couple of arbitrary deadlines for ratification in place that are of dubious constitutionality. If one more state were to ratify the ERA, the question of it’s validity would likely be thrown to Congress and/or the Courts.

There are seven states where one chamber has ratified the Amendment but it hasn’t been acted on by the other chamber.

The one signifcant difference between Trump and Romney is that Romney isn’t a criminal beholden to a foreign dictator. But policy wise, Trump’s Administration has pushed mainstream GOP policies: tax cuts for the rich, fuck you to the environment and everyone else.

I think it’s also comforting to those who are listening, a signal that you’re not done talking. One of the hardest things to teach when preparing people of depositions is to avoid “uhs” and “ums” (for the sake of the court reporter and those who later have to read the transcript). It always makes for awkward exchanges between the deposing attorney and the deponent.

Rod Dreher has gone full fucking Falangist.

America’s favorite reactionary moral intellectual watched a documentary series about the Spanish Civil War and on that rock solid basis reached this conclusion:

An old Catholic who had lived through those times told the filmmakers that for the first time in years, they could be public about their faith. That’s how I knew for sure that the correct side had won the war.
However, the Nationalists were exceptionally merciless in victory.

The Nationalists were basically fascists with an extra helping of Catholic identitarianism. Franco and the Falangists got financial aid from Mussolini and state of the art military aid from Hitler, which proved decisive. Franco sent volunteers to fight with the German army in Russia.

The other side was an unwieldy hodgepodge of Soviet backed communists, monarchists, anarchists and just anybody else who hated Nazi co-travelers.

Rod just sided with the Nazi pals. This is a guy who gets book reviews and op-eds in the NYT.

I noticed as a kid that several American WW2 films, including Casablanca and Sahara specifically mentioned characters fighting the fascists in Spain as significant points.

Franco was bad business and we knew it at the time.

Well, after WWII, ‘Premature anti-fascist’ became a code word for ‘Dirty, stinking Commie!’ More than a few Americans were never comfortable fighting the Nazis.

I’ve always gravitated toward the sports games. Football and baseball, especially, occasionally hockey, basketball, or soccer. Basketball seems the hardest one for them to get right. Some of the first player games where you follow your character around really fuck with my eyes, so I never really got into those.

I like baseball games but baseball season is so long. I like building a franchise up so Madden is perfect for that. Still needs a lot work tho.

Finally playing Red Dead 2. Wow.

It’s crazy right? I took a break to play the final Spider-Man DLC and then started a New Game Plus on that but mostly I’m just dragging RDR2 out a bit.

Pro tip, try not to shoot it out with sheriffs & deputies unless you are absolutely forced to like in the first Micah jailbreak mission. Just get on your horse and run for it, otherwise you just rack up huge bounties. Also, while fleeing pursuit it helps to open up the map and pick a nice far away destination on the map first so you don’t run into anything. Another thing that helps high speed getaways and horse races if you press and hold down on the D pad button to select the larger size mini-map as the default, gives you more heads up on hair pin turns, especially at night. Lastly, make sure you get the pump action shotgun asap, it’s the best way to fuck shit up in the early game before you get your Deadeye skill leveled up and the off hand holster from Micah’s second mission.

A border wall would not have kept George out. He was an American citizen at birth, his parents were American citizens, and he ran for president in 1968 without any birther nonsense.

NEW: Republican @RepTomReed says he’ll back Democratic rules tomorrow - first crossover in 18 years - and has been threatened with “consequences” from GOP leaders.

Reed said he “was compelled to support the new rules after incoming House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and fellow Democratic leaders made good on promises to include process changes he had pushed as co-chairman of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. Those provisions were aimed at opening up the legislative process to bipartisan compromise and dissuading hostage-taking behavior by the ideological fringes of both parties.”

reed’s been pushing for these very changes for a while
he will support them even though the ‘other side’ is now in charge
he wants this, so he’s voting for it. (a glimmer of how the system works)

now he says he wont even bring them up for a revote

Yep. Damned good scene.

The Free French soldier in Sahara (another outstanding Bogart film) also reveals he had been fighting against the Nationalists in Spain. It isn’t a throw away line. It specifically illuminates a point the writers were making about how long the fight was going to be and how important it was.

George’s grandparents were polygamous. His parents were monogamous because polygamous was banned in the LDS church in 1890, five years before his parents were married. The Romneys moved to Mexico in 1885, and returned to the US by about 1912 due to the Mexican Revolution.

OK, I could have sworn Daryl “The Captain” Dragon died years ago

IIRC, either Dragon or Tenille was real sick a couple of years back and they divorced to preserve the assets they still had.

Edit: Actually, it’s apparently more fucked up than that:

Tennille filed for divorce from Dragon in the State of Arizona on January 16, 2014, after 39 years of marriage. Dragon was unaware of the termination of his marriage until he was served with the divorce papers.[11] The divorce documents referenced health insurance or health issues, and Tennille had written on her blog in 2010 that Dragon’s neurological condition, similar to Parkinson’s, known as essential tremor, was characterized by such extreme tremors he could no longer play keyboards.[12][13] Dragon later stated that some of his health problems were the result of errors in dosing his medication, a problem which has since been fixed

I didn’t get the impression that’s why they divorced. I read the article and it sounded like she loved him with everything she had but he wasn’t so great in the loving back department. Not wIth the same, vigor, for lack of a better word. But they always loved each other.

Trump has no compassion and cares nothing about the suffering of federal workers. The Republicans want to privatize the whole government and certainly do not care about the well-being of federal workers. The question is: what can the Democrats do here? Will Pelosi be forced to cave in to protect the country? Putin is laughing at the destruction he is causing to the world.

Look how well it works on FOX programs when liberals raise hell with advertisers.

It will work on a network too if they start getting enough people to go through with the threat. Lower ratings will bring change fast.

Problem is…no one will do it.

Actors and on-camera announcers have to be trained not to add “ums” and “uhs” in their speech, because such pauses are distracting and suggest the speaker is either hesitant or a little dim. But your guy is a local fellow, and that habit of his may be keeping him from moving up to the national level.

Regional accents are another issue. While it may be acceptable for someone with a noticeable Georgia accent to work in Atlanta, the national networks want announcers with “standard” American accents. Diane Sawyer had to lose her Kentucky accent to advance in her career, for example.

I have a friend and former colleague who is both a jazz singer and a French teacher. Her female students’ uptalk and vocal fry drove her nuts. (It was mostly women with those habits 15-20 years ago. Now men are doing it as well.*) Vocal fry, she says, over the long run will damage the speaker’s vocal cords, so that they may end up sounding croaky all the time.

* A YouTuber I follow, Nicholas Merton, speaks with a vocal fry. While he’s a pretty intelligent young guy, that particular vocal habit is so distracting that I can only listen to him speak for about 10 minutes before wanting to turn his video off.

In China, the pause phrases equivalent to “like” and “you know” are “ran hou” (therefore, so, after) and “ni ge” (you that). My weaker students will often insert these phrases in the middle of their English discourse, which is simultaneously amusing and infuriating.

It’s not deliberate, AFAIK. It comes from not pushing enough air over your vocal cords to maintain a proper vibration. Singers, professional speakers and instrumentalists learn how to use their diaphragm and abs to support the air column. Vocal fry, OTOH, is like speaking while running out of air.

No, I think it’s very deliberate. There’s a video of Kim Kardashian doing it, and you can tell she does it on purpose.

The thing I don’t get - people associate vocal fry with being successful and intelligent. I. Do. Not. Fucking. Get. It.

I think they are imitating one another. And yes, it supposedly connotes intelligence and seriousness, and early on its prevalence women adopted it to add “weight” to their speech. Now, men are doing it, too.

There is nothing that annoys me more. Just watching TV, so many people use vocal fry. I want to change the channel when I hear it, but if I did I wouldn’t see more than ten seconds of any given show.

I always considered that song Bowie’s take on American politics.

There’s a brand new dance, but I don’t know its name
That people from bad homes do again and again
It’s big and it’s bland, full of tension and fear
They do it over there but we don’t do it here

Oh, yeah, the movie that probably killed him. From WIKI:

The exterior scenes were shot near St. George, Utah, 137 miles (220 km) downwind of the United States government’s Nevada National Security Site. In 1953, 11 above-ground nuclear weapons tests occurred at the site as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole. The cast and crew spent many difficult weeks at the site, and Hughes later shipped 60 tons of dirt back to Hollywood in order to match the Utah terrain and lend realism to studio re-shoots.[7] The filmmakers knew about the nuclear tests[7] but the federal government assured residents that the tests caused no hazard to public health.[8]

Vasquez Rocks also featured in a couple of episodes of
Firefly (where the IMDB “Goofs” page noted inadvertent shots of highway traffic on the “desert planet”) and various westerns - since the days when cine cameras were hand-cranked.

I remember going out there on a school field trip in the early ‘60s (not sure of the year, but definitely pre-Star Trek) - even then, it was an immediately-recognizable backdrop: as well as the “Foreign Legion Fort” set at its base. Where Capt. Kirk fought as well, IIRC.

Yes, I had the privilege of taking classes with Dr. Colodny. They attempted to blacklist him in the 50s but he stood up to them.

I also had a class with him. The only Abrahiam Lincoln Brigade anecdote he mentioned was that the US Embassy’s Military Attache dropped off a couple of BAR’s with them for test purposes. And then came back a few weeks later, collected them and disappeared.

The BAR stands for Browning Automatic rifle. It was developed in the late WW1 period as a way to help clear trenches. The Bren gun was the British equivalent and probably, ergonomically, a better weapon. The submachine gun family was developed for the same purpose, but using lower powered pistol ammunition.

Clyde Barrow much preferred the BAR to the ‘Tommy gun’. As someone described at one point, with the ‘Tommy Gun’ you could hide behind an engine block and the pistol ammunition would not penetrate. You could not do that with the BAR as the full-power rifle ammunition would go right through the engine block.

Yes, Colodny, for his anti-fascism was there-after identified as a militant communist and put on a lot of internal US watch lists. He was also called in front of the McCarthy Un-American hearings. And, as you described, at one point a right wing Pennsylvania State Legislator attempted to have him fired from the University of Pittsburgh. Obviously, that did not work.

Colodny also served in the US Army during WW2. At the beginning of the war he was screened out and sent to a special Army unit for soldiers with suspect political views. Soldiers suspected of Pro-German Nazi beliefs were in a neighboring unit, pro-Italian Fascists in another.

In his unit were militant trade unionists, ordinary trade unionists, and the veterans of the International Brigades. It took the intervention of journalist Drew Peterson, Eleanor Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt to get his particular unit disbanded. He spent the rest of the war in the Aleutians as an intelligence sergeant in an infantry unit preparing for the invasion of Japan. He obviously developed a reputation as a bright and competent man as he was tasked on a weekly basis to brief colonels and generals on his work.

The BAR was an automatic 7.62 (30.06) machine gun. Same round as the Garand M-1, our best battle rifle of WW2.

It was usually fired in three-shot selection, because no one could control it when it was in full auto. The 20-round box magazine was inserted from below. Hell of light machine gun.

The English Bren gun fired a .303 Enfield round and has a top-loading magazine of similar size. People who have fired both generally prefer the Bren because it’s easier to reload, and you don’t have to look under the gun to do it when bad guys w/ guns are running toward you. Also, less dirt and jams.

If you want to see a Bren gun, rent Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Fun flick.

Since we haven’t bought groceries since the first part of November and our meals were starting to become “interesting,” we went into town this afternoon to see if we could pack a Smart with groceries like you pack Volkswagens with college students.

$600 later and three store carry-out carts, the baggers were impressed as I fit all that in the back of our car. They were convinced we would need to make two trips. Didn’t even crush one potato chip.

Still banging on that group of Wiccans in New York who held a binding spell against potential evil on Trump, is he? Conservatives are never going to let that go. Wicca is also what sunk Christine O’Donnell’s run for office (I am not a witch) after oppo research came up she was a Wiccan as a teenager.

I suppose conservatives would be equally offended say if Christians were identified by the works of Jesus in the Bible.

MIT Developing Shrink-Ray. Steve Martin To Sue. (Carlos Sagan at Wonkette)

It’s not actually a shrink ray, as the article explains.

So, it’s not exactly DIRECT miniaturization of objects. The scientists who came up with the process call it “implosion fabrication” and it’s more like 3D photocopying with the shrink setting on your machine set to 1/1000. How does it work? I’m glad you asked!

Essentially they picked a very absorbent material (the stuff in disposable diapers) to serve as a scaffold for the end product. They stick their stuff to it to make the object, then shrink the scaffold with a particular acid that shrinks the diaper material by a factor of ten in each dimension.
