Is Mitt Romney Donald Trump With Better Hair?

Not this guy again.

Mitt Romney: The president shapes the public character of the nation. Trump’s character falls short.

Romney’s getting a lot of praise from the media for this “scathing” op-ed. But I’d just like to highlight one section.

It is not that all of the president’s policies have been misguided. He was right to align U.S. corporate taxes with those of global competitors, to strip out excessive regulations, to crack down on China’s unfair trade practices, to reform criminal justice and to appoint conservative judges. These are policies mainstream Republicans have promoted for years. But policies and appointments are only a part of a presidency.

Yes, he just told you he supports Trump’s trade wars, his rollback of environmental protections, his installation of right wing judges on the Supreme Court and numerous federal districts, and his massive tax cuts for the rich. And he demonstrated in his last presidential campaign that he’s willing to lie shamelessly and exploit conspiracy theories for political benefit. So what exactly makes Romney different from Trump? His “character?” Or is it the hair?

Since I already wrote several tweets immediately after reading Romney’s grand statement, I’ll just repost them here:

Larry Hogan seems like a decent man, and even pretty close to the center politically. But of course, that means he wouldn’t get anywhere in the TrumGOP.

So, fun fact in the Potential Constitutional Crises category - as of May 2018, 37 states have ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. 38 states are needed for the Amendment to take effect. But, here’s where the potential constitutional crisis starts:

4 states have “repealed” their ratification. Though it’s unclear if such repeals of ratification before fully ratified are valid. Beyond that, Congress put a couple of arbitrary deadlines for ratification in place that are of dubious constitutionality. If one more state were to ratify the ERA, the question of it’s validity would likely be thrown to Congress and/or the Courts.

There are seven states where one chamber has ratified the Amendment but it hasn’t been acted on by the other chamber.

The one signifcant difference between Trump and Romney is that Romney isn’t a criminal beholden to a foreign dictator. But policy wise, Trump’s Administration has pushed mainstream GOP policies: tax cuts for the rich, fuck you to the environment and everyone else.

I think it’s also comforting to those who are listening, a signal that you’re not done talking. One of the hardest things to teach when preparing people of depositions is to avoid “uhs” and “ums” (for the sake of the court reporter and those who later have to read the transcript). It always makes for awkward exchanges between the deposing attorney and the deponent.

McConnell reiterated that he won’t put the measure the House Dems plan to pass tomorrow to reopen government on the Senate floor because Trump has said he won’t sign it, per @tedbarrettcnn. Many GOP senators support that plan, but Trump’s opposition will deny it a Senate vote

I will use “like” sometimes for effect….I know I’m doing it. It’s not a verbal tick, it’s a lifestyle choice. But vocal fry sends me into orbit. I HATE it. It makes the speaker sound ridiculous.

1. How is your decision to refuse to allow a vote on a bill that would pass overwhelmingly in the Senate because the President has alleged he won’t sign it consistent with the principles of checks and balances?

2. The same bill that just passed the House was passed with a veto-proof majority from the Senate. Why won’t you allow it to come to a vote in the Senate?

3. What principles of good governance support the notion that an overwhelmingly bipartisan bill shouldn’t receive a vote because the president claims he will veto it?

A really interesting premise and world setting. A truly scary apocalypse. Interesting characters and and excellent voice work. To top it off the main character is a young woman who kicks ass and never needs rescuing.

I noticed as a kid that several American WW2 films, including Casablanca and Sahara specifically mentioned characters fighting the fascists in Spain as significant points.

Franco was bad business and we knew it at the time.

I’ve always gravitated toward the sports games. Football and baseball, especially, occasionally hockey, basketball, or soccer. Basketball seems the hardest one for them to get right. Some of the first player games where you follow your character around really fuck with my eyes, so I never really got into those.

I’ve always gravitated toward the sports games. Football and baseball, especially, occasionally hockey, basketball, or soccer. Basketball seems the hardest one for them to get right. Some of the first player games where you follow your character around really fuck with my eyes, so I never really got into those.

I like baseball games but baseball season is so long. I like building a franchise up so Madden is perfect for that. Still needs a lot work tho.

It’s crazy right? I took a break to play the final Spider-Man DLC and then started a New Game Plus on that but mostly I’m just dragging RDR2 out a bit.

Pro tip, try not to shoot it out with sheriffs & deputies unless you are absolutely forced to like in the first Micah jailbreak mission. Just get on your horse and run for it, otherwise you just rack up huge bounties. Also, while fleeing pursuit it helps to open up the map and pick a nice far away destination on the map first so you don’t run into anything. Another thing that helps high speed getaways and horse races if you press and hold down on the D pad button to select the larger size mini-map as the default, gives you more heads up on hair pin turns, especially at night. Lastly, make sure you get the pump action shotgun asap, it’s the best way to fuck shit up in the early game before you get your Deadeye skill leveled up and the off hand holster from Micah’s second mission.

There is a radio guy on local ESPN sports radio I sometimes listen to when I am in my kitchen. He used to be on a local TV station as a sports reporter.

He does the “um” thing all the damn time and it drives me crazy.

I thought radio and TV people were professionals and had learned not to do speech fillers like that.

He has a good show, good guests and co-host, etc. so I like to listen but the ums are just too much. I find myself doing an um right before he does, because you just know when they are coming.

Actors and on-camera announcers have to be trained not to add “ums” and “uhs” in their speech, because such pauses are distracting and suggest the speaker is either hesitant or a little dim. But your guy is a local fellow, and that habit of his may be keeping him from moving up to the national level.

Regional accents are another issue. While it may be acceptable for someone with a noticeable Georgia accent to work in Atlanta, the national networks want announcers with “standard” American accents. Diane Sawyer had to lose her Kentucky accent to advance in her career, for example.

I have a friend and former colleague who is both a jazz singer and a French teacher. Her female students’ uptalk and vocal fry drove her nuts. (It was mostly women with those habits 15-20 years ago. Now men are doing it as well.*) Vocal fry, she says, over the long run will damage the speaker’s vocal cords, so that they may end up sounding croaky all the time.

* A YouTuber I follow, Nicholas Merton, speaks with a vocal fry. While he’s a pretty intelligent young guy, that particular vocal habit is so distracting that I can only listen to him speak for about 10 minutes before wanting to turn his video off.

People back then did geometry. They could measure angles ‘n’ stuff. Replicating the position of the stars in Orion’s belt would be child’s play.

In China, the pause phrases equivalent to “like” and “you know” are “ran hou” (therefore, so, after) and “ni ge” (you that). My weaker students will often insert these phrases in the middle of their English discourse, which is simultaneously amusing and infuriating.

The second one “ni ge” can also be mistaken for the n-word, which may have been part of the joke in this scene from Rush Hour.

I’m watching ‘Mythbusters Jr.’ with Adam Savage and six super-genius kids. It’s actually pretty good. The kids are a lot of fun, and Adam’s having a good time hanging around a bunch of big-brain kids.

There is nothing that annoys me more. Just watching TV, so many people use vocal fry. I want to change the channel when I hear it, but if I did I wouldn’t see more than ten seconds of any given show.

The BAR stands for Browning Automatic rifle. It was developed in the late WW1 period as a way to help clear trenches. The Bren gun was the British equivalent and probably, ergonomically, a better weapon. The submachine gun family was developed for the same purpose, but using lower powered pistol ammunition.

Clyde Barrow much preferred the BAR to the ‘Tommy gun’. As someone described at one point, with the ‘Tommy Gun’ you could hide behind an engine block and the pistol ammunition would not penetrate. You could not do that with the BAR as the full-power rifle ammunition would go right through the engine block.

Yes, Colodny, for his anti-fascism was there-after identified as a militant communist and put on a lot of internal US watch lists. He was also called in front of the McCarthy Un-American hearings. And, as you described, at one point a right wing Pennsylvania State Legislator attempted to have him fired from the University of Pittsburgh. Obviously, that did not work.

Colodny also served in the US Army during WW2. At the beginning of the war he was screened out and sent to a special Army unit for soldiers with suspect political views. Soldiers suspected of Pro-German Nazi beliefs were in a neighboring unit, pro-Italian Fascists in another.

In his unit were militant trade unionists, ordinary trade unionists, and the veterans of the International Brigades. It took the intervention of journalist Drew Peterson, Eleanor Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt to get his particular unit disbanded. He spent the rest of the war in the Aleutians as an intelligence sergeant in an infantry unit preparing for the invasion of Japan. He obviously developed a reputation as a bright and competent man as he was tasked on a weekly basis to brief colonels and generals on his work.

I was an eyewitness. My mother was a delegate and the folks took me along so I could see the process in action. I saw. It had a lot to do with turning me to the dark side (the Republicans) for a long time.

The BAR was an automatic 7.62 (30.06) machine gun. Same round as the Garand M-1, our best battle rifle of WW2.

It was usually fired in three-shot selection, because no one could control it when it was in full auto. The 20-round box magazine was inserted from below. Hell of light machine gun.

The English Bren gun fired a .303 Enfield round and has a top-loading magazine of similar size. People who have fired both generally prefer the Bren because it’s easier to reload, and you don’t have to look under the gun to do it when bad guys w/ guns are running toward you. Also, less dirt and jams.

If you want to see a Bren gun, rent Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Fun flick.

Hi. I see the world hasn’t ended yet.

Since we haven’t bought groceries since the first part of November and our meals were starting to become “interesting,” we went into town this afternoon to see if we could pack a Smart with groceries like you pack Volkswagens with college students.

$600 later and three store carry-out carts, the baggers were impressed as I fit all that in the back of our car. They were convinced we would need to make two trips. Didn’t even crush one potato chip.

Wicca is also what sunk Christine O’Donnell’s run for office (I am not a witch) after oppo research came up she was a Wiccan as a teenager.

So, it’s not exactly DIRECT miniaturization of objects. The scientists who came up with the process call it “implosion fabrication” and it’s more like 3D photocopying with the shrink setting on your machine set to 1/1000. How does it work? I’m glad you asked!
