Reminder:

Things on the House Democrats to do list:

1) reopen govt and pass a clean CR
2) pass a new/improved VRA
3) pass a permanent VAWA
4) strengthen protection for independent counsel’s office.
5) climate change

Impeachment is a distinct possibility too. Nancy getting under Trump’s skin from before day 1 is totally worth it.

Answering a comment from last thread from dangerman regarding my post about Liz Warren suggesting the Democrats running for president in 2020 form a central theme on important issues they can all agree to.

re: #168 dangerman

Dangerman said Bernie would mess things up and would not agree to the common themes.

First off, if Bernie runs it is my understanding that he has to run as a Democrat and serve as a Democrat. New rules!

Second, Bernie is going to have a tough go this time. Familiar knowledge of him now and his campaign having the abuse issues with Bernie claiming he didn’t know about any of it is going to be damaging.

The shine is off Bernie now. He doesn’t look the same to a lot of people. And he will be up against a pretty good line-up.

re: #325 Backwoods_Sleuth

Why Democrats need illegals:

For every 770,000 illegals who filled out the 2010 census in a leftist state, the Democrats got another vote in the electoral college

Foreign nationals should NOT be counted in the census. It rewards law breaking and gives Democrats a upper hand!

cmon, chuck. think.

- many foreign nationals are residents and pay taxes

- also i dont think this is what you meant.
- people move from state to state - if 770k people move from a red state to a blue…
but that’s different
- there are 538 elector slots. new ones arent created out of whole cloth if 770k people move into a particular state.
unless you’re suggesting that the nefarious dems are packing the country every 1 year out of every 10 years to rig the census by letting so many millions of people in (and telling them where to settle) that they can skew the representation

ps - trump estimated the other day something like 30-35m illegals in the country
yeah we know it’s high. still 35m/770k = say 45 electors
1 - how’d that work out for the dems in 2016?
2- when were those 45 electors reapportioned between 2012 and 2016?

oh i get it
i figured the higher the number the more absurd the claim becomes

here’s a map

look which states predominantly gained electors after the 2010 census
hint: not blue ones. biggest winners, texas and florida.

and the total swing was 12 electors reallocated

It’s actually pretty close to the total number of foreign-born people in the US

The number of foreign-born people in the United States grew last year to its highest share in over a century, according to Census Bureau data published on Thursday.

The increase took the number of foreign-born residents to 44.5 million in 2017, up 1.8 percent from a year earlier.

(snip)

Foreign-born residents made up 13.7 percent of the U.S. population in 2017, up from 13.5 percent in 2016, according to the Census Bureau’s estimates. That put the proportion of immigrants in the United States last year at the highest since 1910, when they made up 14.7 percent of the population.

The racism is going to get worse as the country gets less white. For comparison’s sake, the 2000 census showed the population as 75% white, in 2010 the census showed the country as only 63.7% white; but a big part of that is because in 2000 they didn’t count Hispanic/Latino as a separate racial category.

At most there’s 11 million here illegally. Nearly half are on visa overstays, not illegal border crossings.

All end up paying taxes - sales, fuel, alcohol/cigarette, etc.. so to say that they’re a massive drain is an absolute lie.

770,000 isn’t even remotely close to what shifts a seat in Congress from one state to another. He thinks all these illegals are in Blue states, as opposed to Texas and red states picking up counts based on those working in agriculture (like AZ, NE, etc.)

The racism is going to get worse as the country gets less white. For comparison’s sake, the 2000 census showed the population as 75% white, in 2010 the census showed the country as only 63.7% white; but a big part of that is because in 2000 they didn’t count Hispanic/Latino as a separate racial category.

As soon as the white percentage seems close to dropping below 50%… Hispanic/Latino will be broken into hispanic white, hispanic black, and mestizo or indigenous. The white hispanics will suddenly become just white, and there they are back in the majority again.

It’s how the Irish became white. It’s how Italians became white. Jury’s still out on whether Ashkenazi are white.

My mom’s grandfather’s immigrant miners were Dems. Big FDR and John Lewis fans. My Nana’s father apparently hated Truman but Dad’s cousin didn’t know whether it was for lefty or right reasons. Oh, I imagine he needs the money, if only to pay off his creditors. But it’s also about a compulsion the rich have to attain greater wealth, because they view it in a sick way as a method of score-keeping. It’s why he lives in an apartment covered in so much gold that it makes Versailles look like a dump. Hm. Actually, I think this is a promo video. AOC might have even gotten paid for it. You sorta get what you pay for….

Then getting a call to haul ass to the White House as Sanders has announced an impending press conference. (Continuing my thought)

My guess is that the likely next step in the values discussion will be the criminal indictments and investigations.

The Republicans will counter with the claim that they are being criminalized for being Republican.

I suspect that this will consume US political debate for the next two years. Unless Trump triggers an existential crisis.

It’s a weaker point of fracture.

It’s not just food orders, but fast food/convenience food orders. So it’s a situation in which people have to wait in line, are hungry/stressed/maybe are watching the clock. But (I think, more important) it’s also a situation where people have been taught that fast food workers are stupid, unskilled, and less-than other workers. There’s a sense of license that you can get extremely angry and behave badly towards them because they have no power and no status.

Some of her colleagues are ordained in the Wiccan Religion. There are various formal groups that are categorized as part of the Modern Pagan movement, including “Heathenry” which is based upon various Germanic pagan traditions.

I wonder if it will reopen religious debates from a millenia ago:

Part of what makes the elite schools “elite” is that most of the “elite” that have those contacts go there. Those on the outside trying to get in want to make those contacts. If a significant number of folks like Kushner is going to UMass instead of Harvard, then the value for non-elites to go to Harvard drops because those potential connections are no longer there.

The truth is, most students are going to get as good an education at UMass (or any other public school) as they are at Harvard. But having Harvard (or Yale or any other Ivy or top tier elite school) on your resume is a key that opens multiple doors. The alumni network, those connections, move your resume to the top of the pile.

Pretty much this. The networking is the most valuable part (and only if you realize that it’s the START of the necessary networking you need in order to make it big). There are other attractions and plusses, of course, but the peers you make are a big part of the advantages you get from the elite schools.

I was saying that this morning - I think they’ve gone to the Fear Well a couple too many times. People just aren’t buying it like they used to.

And now with a majority in the House, Democrats are much better positioned to point out when the Bullshitter In Chief is bullshitting.

For a little more context, of the last 19 Supreme Court appointments (which takes us back to Thurgood Marshall in 1967) only 4 have not come from an Ivy League Law School (and only 1, I believe, was not from Harvard or Yale). Those four are O’Connor, Stevens, Burger, and Marshall. The non-Harvard/Yale Ivy Leaguer is RBG (who graduated from Columbia Law but started off at Harvard Law; and who went to Cornell for undergrad)

I see both sides. PayGo limits spending meaning it limits what you can do. If you can’t raise funding or say how you’ll pay for it, the legislation likely won’t pass especially with the REPUBLICANS doing everything they can to stop it. It’s not like they’ll rush anything through like the tax scam.

Yes there’s a fundamental difference in attitude towards taxation but equally important is the difference in what Democrats and Republicans want to spend money on. Dems want to spend money on things that increase quality of life, especially at the margins, a social safety net. That spending feeds back into the economy directly because poor people spend the aid they receive immediately. Republicans have a fundamental hostility towards the poor while simultaneously fetishizing military defense spending and constantly casting America as woefully insecure and beset by foreign threats. And while the defense industrial complex is to a degree necessary and employs a lot of people, that spending is far less efficient at boosting the wider consumer economy.

The basic difference in priorities and motivations is that between idealistic aspiration and incessant fear.

When asked whether she would support Harris, Feinstein said: “I’m a big fan of Sen. Harris, and I work with her. But she’s brand-new here, so it takes a little bit of time to get to know somebody.”

Harris was elected to the Senate in 2016. Her office declined to comment Thursday.

I’m sure the fact that she had worked with Biden for decades plays a role in her current semi-endorsement. But I can’t help but feel that this is two steps away from McCaskill’s line about AOC being a shiny object.

I’m sure the fact that she had worked with Biden for decades plays a role in her current semi-endorsement. But I can’t help but feel that this is two steps away from McCaskill’s line about AOC being a shiny object.

I think Biden while he would be a good President isn’t the answer.

If you want to be sworn in on a Bible, fine but if you want some other than it, also fine.

Plus, you know, being sworn in on the holy book of a religion you don’t subscribe to seems pretty pointless and stupid.

When I was first elected, I contacted the county prosecutor before the next village board meeting noting state law requires using the Bible.

He called the state attorney general and got a “special dispensation” for me.

Since that time, the state oath has been updated to include using any holy book, or none.

One wingnut in that thread is asking why the Stennis’s chaplain allowed that. (Answer: I Amendment freedom of religion. Navy chaplains are aware of that, wingnuts aren’t.)

Yep. During my active duty days, I was something of a religious searcher and had not gone back to any form of Christianity. I was however, very into Buddhism (which fits well with the liberal Christianity I eventually found) and a Southern Baptist Chaplain was very supportive of my rights in the face of official disapproval. While I have heard of other chaplains, especially in the USAF, that are not so good about it, every Chaplain I have personally known highly values religious freedom for everyone. ALL OF TRUMP’S BORDER PATROL BUDDIES ARE FREQUENT FOX GUESTS (Goes to No More Mister Nice Blog, more at the link):

After greeting the press, Trump quickly turned the podium over to Brandon Judd, who is reportedly the president of the National Border Patrol Council. He defended Trump’s requirement that any deal to end the government shutdown must include border wall funding.

Two more agents, Art Del Cueto and Hector Garza, followed.

Someone may want to pass this on to Talking Points Memo, as they seem to be getting weak in the knees now.

The Hatch Act of 1939, officially An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities, is a United States federal law whose main provision prohibits employees in the executive branch of the federal government, except the president, vice-president, and certain designated high-level officials,[1] from engaging in some forms of political activity. It went into law on August 2, 1939. The law was named for Senator Carl Hatch of New Mexico. It was most recently amended in 2012.
And this is why D&S shouldn’t be taken seriously as talking heads on anything. She’s a state elected official who is allowed to investigate in her state. It just so happens that a lot of Trump’s crimes definitely took place under her jurisdiction. Those two are idiots. No wonder why they’ve become maystays at FNC.

The rule of law requires the top law enforcement official of NY to investigate Trump’s criminal misconduct, which includes financial fraud and chicanery requiring court oversight of the termination of his “foundation”. His businesses engaged in money laundering and it appears that SDNY and Mueller have found plenty to support those charges. There’s state equivalent charges.

Enforcing state law isn’t a violation of the Hatch Act.

Nate Ford would have a plan - hell, a number of plans! - to get McConnell to put the House bill(s) up for a vote and think it was his own idea.

re: #309 HappyWarrior

New Jersey apparently did in some elections in the early 19th century too for a little while.

The state constitution written after the Revolution was not specific about voter = male. It was a bit of a to-do to then disenfranchise NJ women. There was a specific election (can’t remember exact year) where the Federalist and the Democratic-Republicans disagreed on whether women should keep the vote. The Federalist’s power was in decline, and they thought that more women would vote for them. So, the Federalists lobbied for women to keep the suffrage. In the end, Democratic-Republican efforts to disenfranchised NJ women were successful.

Democrats should recognize that when an elected president, whatever you may think of him, has a legitimate objective, you should bend over backwards to try to meet that objective if you want a result

“want a result”?
you mean the legitimate object that the president wants?
what if the ‘result’ we want isn’t the ‘objective’ the president wants
we good then too?

Democrats should recognize that when an elected president, whatever you may think of him, has a legitimate objective, you should bend over backwards to try to meet that objective if you want a result. alexander.senate.gov

— Sen. Lamar Alexander (@SenAlexander) January 3, 2019

From a fellow Tennessean (and one of your constituents), fuck that noise and fuck you for carrying water for Trump so you keep your seat, because absolutely none of Trump’s “objectives” are legitimate or good. If you truly gave a shit what happens to those of us who are your constituents and to the country at large, you wouldn’t be saying this sniveling, ass-kissing vomitus.

re: #448 Mattand

Still can’t decide that when GOPers say shit like this, they are either being genuinely stupid or are some of the most cynical/dishonest motherfuckers on the planet.

I’m guessing in Alexander’s case, it’s the latter.

Once upon a time, in a more rational age, Lamar! was pretty much Gen. Eric Republican, more or less a moderate straight down the line. He really made his bones as the governor that had to clean and straighten up Tennessee state government after the widespread corruption of Ray Blanton’s administration (to get a little taste of that, watch Marie with Sissy Spacek) and by becoming the “Education Governor”; after two terms, Lamar! was UT-Knoxville’s president for a few years, then served as Secretary of Education for the last two years of GHWB’s term.

However, Lamar! has tacked steadily ever rightward ever since winning the Senate seat that Fred Thompson retired from in 2002, because the state has done the same over pretty much the same period; since the 2010 elections, the GOP has held not only both Senate seats, but a supermajority of TN’s House seats (7 of 9; Nashville and Memphis have the only two Dems); he just keeps pandering to the faithful in the suburbs, the exurb, and all of the BFEs to keep himself in the Senate.

For me, it’s frustrating, because he actually use to govern well.

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Jan 3, 2019 • 7:00:18pm

I know we are a little skittish here about references to the First Lady’s former career as a model, but if the GOPers had even an ounce of decency, they would note that AOC is at least wearing clothes in the high school video. Their lack of self-awareness is mind-boggling.
