Stunning High Resolution Video From the International Space Station: The World Below: Time-Lapse | Earth 2

Gorgeous in full screen

Vimeo

I never thought that I’d be making another one of these, but with all of the new footage from the International Space Station (ISS) that has been made public, I decided to give it another go.

All of 4K video and Time-lapse sequences were taken by the astronauts onboard the ISS (NASA/ESA). All footage has been edited, color graded, denoised, deflickered, stabilized by myself. Some of the 4K video clips were shot at 24frames/sec reflecting the actual speed of the space station over the earth. Shots taken at wider angels were speed up a bit to match the flow of the video.

Some interesting facts about the ISS: The ISS maintains an orbit above the earth with an altitude of between 330 and 435 km (205 and 270 miles). The ISS completes 15.54 orbits per day around the earth and travels at a speed of 27,600 km/h; 17,100 mph).

The yellow line that you see over the earth is Airgolw/Nightglow. Airglow/Nightglow is a layer of nighttime light emissions caused by chemical reactions high in Earth’s atmosphere. A variety of reactions involving oxygen, sodium, ozone, and nitrogen result in the production of a very faint amount of light (Keck A and Miller S et al. 2013).

Hope you enjoy and thank you all again for watching!

Worth noting that most gender neutral bathrooms are what are called “single hole restrooms”. That means there’s one toilet in them and you can lock the door behind you. California actually now requires single hole restrooms to be gender neutral.

As for the implication of “the children won’t be safe” it’s rather interesting that the arguments being used against trans people today are the same arguments used against gay people in the 80s and into the 90s. Bullshit then and bullshit now

Really puts the lie to their version of heaven. They don’t think it’s a place that everyone ideally should be allowed to see. They want it as an exclusionary paradise, one that shoves a boot down into all the faces of the undesireables and a tower to mock them from.

Someone needs to remind them what happens with walls even in the Bible. Jericho comes to mind.

Yeah, I think family restroom started as a way for parents with little kids to take them to the bathroom without weird looks of “how dare you bring a five year old into the wrong bathroom”. But I don’t think you’ll see a gender neutral restroom with multiple holes. And really, unless you’re looking over or under the stall, it really isn’t an issue

Some dumb shits in that made a claim that 90% of sexual assaults happen in ‘gender neutral’ areas like that. Probably dug up from the same claim that the supermajority of all mass shootings happen in ‘gun free zones’. A.K.A. the thing you usually void when you go to the bathroom to begin with.

I have a resize app on my phone. It tells me the length and width in pixels. I just cut those numbers in half to get images under 500k but keep the correct proportions. It’s kind of annoying but much easier than repetitive trial and error.

Ah - Preview does let you tell it how many pixels wide and tall you want it. Cut it in half you say? Clever.

Though Preview should just let you tell it what size you want. Lots of apps have a limit.

one reason why is that no one with a brain would even consider working for him

In a vegetative state for years, she gave birth. Now families wonder if there are other victims.

A near-drowning had left the woman in a persistent vegetative state for nearly a decade.

Her universe consisted mostly of a room at a Phoenix Hacienda HealthCare facility where she received round-the-clock care. So when she went into labor a few days after Christmas, her caretakers were flummoxed.

“From what I’ve been told, she was moaning,” an unidentified source told Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO. “And they didn’t know what was wrong with her. … None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth.”

There was a highly publicized case like this in Lubbock in 1991. Suspicion centered on the staff but it turned out to be the victim’s brother in law.

If you want to understand why I haven’t warmed to Rick Wilson: why is “ten-toothed” something to include when trying to characterize Trumpers?

Because it makes Trumpism a product of lower-class ignorance and links poverty and stupidity.

I frequently criticize never-Trumpers because they ultimately have stylistic objections to Trump, choosing not to observe the shared rhetoric of the man and what came before the man. Rick Wilson is slightly better, but he ultimately wants to pretend that the Trump/never-Trump distinction matches conservative understandings of how social class reflects better and worse kinds of people, morally and intellectually. Characterizing the rise of Trump as the rise of hicks and the poors is a denial of how deep anti-intellectualism and chauvinism have been integrated into the Republican Party; that it’s very rich donors and middle class retirees and “normal” people who are the product of a culture that tells them that their feelings matter more than facts, that their anger is veracity, that their enjoyment of cruelty is natural.

He’s performing a slightly more edgy version of Brooksian centrism, where the problems on his side are coincidentally not the fault of people in his “reasonable”” camp even though their fingerprints are all over it and they continue to exploit things going wrong to obtain their ends…and occasionally he slips into the Procrustean both sides are bad position because he’s a patrician shaming of the peasants.

I use the word rube all the time. But I don’t pretend that rubes spontaneously generate, that they’re some kind of “other” people. I don’t conveniently slide my gaze around difficult questions about how there’s a pre-existing herd of rubes, primed to believe the new hustle because its just a flashier version of the old one. And most emphatically, I’m not calling people rubes, contemptuously, even as my fellow carnies are working them over to get their own folding money. Over and over, “conservatism” refuses to assay its contents. When a problem becomes so prominent it can’t be denied, it’s declared not-conservatism and the product of outside influences. But also coded into their language is that the problems arise because lesser kinds of people fail to listen to their betters.

A culture of lavish cruelty and status insecurity preceded Trump. Selling to rubes…literally, because of the crossover between scammy mail businesses and GOP politics…preceded Trump. This collective of people, all gullible in the same way, all blind to the same details of the world, are an end product of…what, exactly?

Rick Wilson is another Innsmouth resident that likes the salary the preternaturally robust fishing economy provides and hates how the Deep One hybrids keep trying to move into his suburb rather than stay in the trailer parks.

Harahan police chief admits there’s not actually Zika in meth after viral Facebook post (New Orleans Advocate, with video, more at the link):

If you’ve heard that methamphetamine in Louisiana comes with the Zika virus, well, that’s fake news.

The meth is just meth.

But word spread quickly over the weekend saying otherwise, thanks to a post on the official Facebook page of the Harahan Police Department.

The post said that meth recently bought in Louisiana had been found with Zika, which can cause serious birth defects.

It urged all meth users to “Please bring all of it to your local Police Department and they will test it for free. If you’re not comfortable coming to us, an officer will be glad to come to you and test your meth in the privacy of your home.”

Harahan Police Chief Tim Walker acknowledged Sunday that the post was just a stunt to raise awareness of drug abuse and that it’s not actually possible to have Zika virus in methamphetamine.

If that seems like a long extrapolation from a toss-off statement, stop and consider the number of thinkpieces that get dropped by the “intellectual” right in which the failures of their policy and the suffering of people that supported their policies is the result of…the poor moral and intellectual character of the poor, regardless their politics.

This is a thing they do consistently. It’s built into “Hillbilly Elegy” it’s built into assigning blame for the (white, rural) meth and opiod epidemics, it’s built into the analysis of failed policies like abstinence-only education.

“Can’t fail, can only be failed” requires not just one scapegoat, but a whole series. When they can’t blame the preferred targets…anybody not a US “conservative”…they select the least-valuable section of their own body politic.

Isn’t that *explicitly* what he’s doing? I believe consensus when it first came up was POTUS can’t actually refuse his salary for some reason (seemed wonky to me then TBH but if some fairly reputable American law profs are arguing so I’m happy to take their word for it - gov’t can be weird at times).
I mean, if that’s what he’s doing it’s AOK to take it as a charitable deduction; X USD coming in, X USD deducted, income tax effect net 0, I believe (unless I’m missing some of the vagaries of the US income tax system). Also, too: at that time it was mentioned there’s a ceiling to max charitable deductions so this would count towards that - not that I seriously believe he’s legitimately donating any amount of substance but hey, it might interfere with some other ‘creative’ schemes.

The dude spends about two pages to come to “liberals are hypocrites, let the free market decide.”

In addition to offering payment to living donors, we can pay potential donors in advance for the “option” of harvesting organs after they pass away, a strategy that eliminates any negative health effects on donors, since, by definition, the option can only be exercised after they have died, and have no further use for the organ themselves.

Because that can’t POSSIBLY lead to any of those pre-paid donors being coincidentally shot in the head when the pre-paid recipient is in need of heart or lungs.

As Hollywood continues to struggle with the underrepresentation of women behind the camera, most people have forgotten that 100 years ago, one woman ruled.

Her name was Lois Weber. Counting shorts and feature-length movies, she directed at least 138 films — all before 1940. She became the first American woman to direct a feature-length dramatic film with The Merchant of Venice in 1914.

“In her day, she was considered one of the three great minds of the early film industry, alongside D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille,” says Shelley Stamp, a film historian at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

for comparison (ie what about obama):

while in office, Obama donated 1.1M of his 8 year salary to charity

he also donated all of his 1.4m nobel prize to a bunch charities.

add em up and that’s about 75% or more of his total salary.

Also, too: at that time it was mentioned there’s a ceiling to max charitable deductions so this would count towards that - not that I seriously believe he’s legitimately donating any amount of substance but hey, it might interfere with some other ‘creative’ schemes.

actually no as i said above, er below, oh hell where ever it is
you are largely correct
it’s a tax quibble and we live for those

Or trebuchets. Or circus cannons.

And his dipwad idea of a 1,500 mile roller on top of his nonsense wall? Aside from taking decades to complete and endless funds to maintain, that is easily defeated as well (rope across both sides, weighted on each end).

Geez Bill, if this is what college teaches you, maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t go.

College teaches those that want to absorb the knowledge. Further education. It isn’t magic.

My old teachers, the Catholic nuns, really pounded on that idea at my school. They wanted us to be sponges and soak up the knowledge we could. And always keep that ability, you may learn it later but keep soaking it up.

Bill is no sponge. He’s got a rock head made of granite. And as we all know granite rock is pretty resistant to soaking up anything.

You get the money now; they then have a lien on your parts.

And if you should fall off a cliff and it takes days to retrieve your body, or if you’re killed by a bear mauling or you’re lost at sea, your estate would then owe them a refund.

I have so many questions… what if I develop cancer after I sell my organs? Or what if I develop a chemical dependency (alcohol and/or drugs) that ruin some organs? Can they force me to work out and/or eat healthy so that I don’t become obese and thereby damage certain organs?

Electronics component manufacturing has largely been moved overseas. Very few suppliers exist in the USA to supply our nation’s electronics industry.

Moreover, he isn’t blaming the Russians (that’s a red herring). He’s blaming the tariffs (which Trump promised on his campaign).

The chart he posted was the number of jobs gained, not the increase or decrease of manufacturers, and the number given is all jobs, not electronics component manufacturing jobs.

Manufacturing needs not only labor but materials. Not all of those materials, raw or otherwise, are available in the US. So, stupid tariffs that make it more costly for a manufacturer to manufacture goods means that production costs go up. That means you either produce less, hire fewer workers, raise prices (which may, in turn stifle demand for your product), or some combination thereof

I would liked to have had the formal education a college or university provides, but just because I didn’t go doesn’t mean I chose to stop learning.

Didn’t say you did. The point was about being a sponge and continuing to educate yourself.

It’s the road you choose and how you get there. Superhighway, state highway, surface streets and back roads, alleys and paths.

On the flip-side, I have heard a lot of people that didn’t go to college say negative things about those that did go to college. I think sometimes that is a pride and or jealousy issue.

It would be all pointless to a degree as far as how you become educated, but then we have turned education into a business so they push college on everyone and that may not be right either. We need all manner of options and ways for all our citizens to have full access.

All I know is, education, like healthcare needs a good scrubbing and polishing in this country. We aren’t all that.

And I tell conservatives I know that a healthy and well educated people are a strong people and a great national defense. So, let’s spend like it is in the defense budget!!!

I think someone posted a link here yesterday that’s included “things you didn’t know about illegal immigration.” One of them was that the median residency of undocumented immigrants in the US was like 14.8 years. I also decided to look up polling on immigration, Pew has some interesting numbers. In 2016 only 32% of respondents favored deporting everyone that was in the US illegally. And 84% favored a pathway to citizenship/amnesty. (Those are combined “favor” and “strongly favor” numbers)

Israel has spent years building fences around parts of its border, and it still has to worry about infiltration by armed terrorists.

They’ve built tunnels that went undetected.

They’ve fired rockets and missiles into Israel that were undetected.

All the technology in the world wont keep out a persistent threat. Manpower wont keep them out either. Israel has far less territory and wall to defend, and even then they have issues. They also know that the wall isn’t the only answer.

Trump’s only answer is a wall, and it doesn’t address the bulk of the issues he claims:

1) it doesn’t address drug trafficking, when drugs come in via mail from China (fentanyl)
2) it doesn’t stop anyone who overstays their visas (and that’s the majority of the people here illegally).
3) it wont stop anyone from climbing over with ropes or ladders.

Trump loves to claim that he’s built so much wall, except every analysis reveals he’s built precisely ZERO miles of new wall. There’s a possibility he can start building new wall at some point this year based on existing appropriations, but the miles aren’t changing. He’s only modified a few scant miles of existing fence.

He’s only modified a few scant miles of existing fence.

there are lots of good technical reasons why a wall is a bad idea.
these are some good ones.

I’m sticking with this one:

“A wall is an immorality. It’s not who we are as a nation” - Speaker Pelosi

I refuse to accept even the premise of a wall as an item for discussion.

Yeah, but does it make a heatmap that shows whether the size of a pixel has changed? //

Don’t run (Editorial in the Barre-Montpelier, VT Times-Argus, more at the link):

Bernie Sanders should not run for president. In fact, we beg him not to.

That is an unfavorable opinion, especially among most Vermonters and progressives who support the platform that has come to define him. But at this point, there are more things about another Sanders run at the White House that concern us than excite us.

In this space, we have repeatedly hit the senator on where his loyalties lay: Vermont or a bigger calling? We have asked him to make a choice, which he would argue was his recent re-election to Congress. But in his previous run for the presidency, Sanders, an independent who ran for the White House as a Democrat, missed dozens of votes that likely would have helped Vermonters. And, while he handily defeated his challenger, can Vermonters point to Sanders’ record and say definitively, “This is what he’s done for us?”

They then proceed to tear him apart.

Must Writers Be Moral? Their Contracts May Require It (New York Times)

More and more large publishing houses are putting “morality clauses” in contracts for authors. The idea is if the author is involved in a scandal (as determined by the publisher), the publisher can fire them.

One answer is the increasingly widespread “morality clause.” Over the past few years, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins and Penguin Random House have added such clauses to their standard book contracts. I’ve heard that Hachette Book Group is debating putting one in its trade book contracts, though the publisher wouldn’t confirm it. These clauses release a company from the obligation to publish a book if, in the words of Penguin Random House, “past or future conduct of the author inconsistent with the author’s reputation at the time this agreement is executed comes to light and results in sustained, widespread public condemnation of the author that materially diminishes the sales potential of the work.”

That’s reasonable, I guess. Penguin, to its credit, doesn’t ask authors to return their advances. But other publishers do, and some are even more hard-nosed.

This past year, regular contributors to Condé Nast magazines started spotting a new paragraph in their yearly contracts. It’s a doozy. If, in the company’s “sole judgment,” the clause states, the writer “becomes the subject of public disrepute, contempt, complaints or scandals,” Condé Nast can terminate the agreement. In other words, a writer need not have done anything wrong; she need only become scandalous. In the age of the Twitter mob, that could mean simply writing or saying something that offends some group of strident tweeters.

The problem is that said clause could be implemented simply by people brigading social media to slag you, even if you’re not on it, even if what is said is not true.

For example, our esteemed host Mr. Johnson has a noteworthy hate mob on social media. If he was to announce on his Twitter feed he has sold a book to a major publisher, those folk would be out in a flash trashing everything about him.

Said publisher, looking at the quantity of outrage and not whether it’s true or not, then tells Mr. Johnson “sorry, upon reconsideration we suggest you take your book somewhere else.”

There’s an argument that traditional publishing houses aren’t really needed in the future of publishing. It’s not very difficult to put a book out on the ereader marketplaces, and Amazon offers a print when purchased program if you want hardcopies available. Social media gives authors the ability to promote their work in ways that they couldn’t even a few years ago.

Same thing has happened in music, you can bypass the old gatekeepers fairly easily now. It’s still a lot of hard work, but much more doable than it used to be

Didn’t we settle the legality of that 150-some years ago?

Seems to me the shutdown theater depends on the idea that it doesn’t “really” affect most of us because essential work still goes on, paid or unpaid. But if TSA workers and border agents and federal prison guards all get the word that if they’re not being paid, they can’t be compelled to come to work… that, I’d think, would be a game changer.

Even military personnel don’t sign rights away (that’s somewhat of an urban legend).

The big area where that’s being fought now is arbitration (signing your right away to bringing a lawsuit). Lots of corporations like that one.

For example, I want to sue my telephone company for my lousy Internet service. Somewhere in the microscopic sign up text is a clause that says they get to pick the arbiter, and I get to go to Delaware or Louisiana or something to slug out my case (without the benefit of a lawyer). Lots of corporations and conservative politicians love that one.

Let’s see what happens in this era of Pelosi. However, the House can’t get any legislation through without the cooperation of the Senate. Given the total malfeasance of the current GOP in Washington, Trump could rule by fiat and, with the eager approval of the Senate, destroy the judiciary for decades. If the traitor-in-chief gets away with “Acting” Secretaries, gets to declare a National Emergency to justify the wall, and keeps the TrumpShutdown going for months, it’s not clear that there is any limit to his damage to our nation’s institutions. OTOH, it’s certainly possible that in the interest of self-preservation, Republicans will do the right thing, especially if Mueller’s report is damning.

But how if Trump threatens to veto everything and McConnell refuses to bring any legislation to the floor that doesn’t have Trump’s approval? Or is there a way to bypass McConnell to get legislation considered by the Senate?

There are parliamentary manoeuvers which can be used, but even they don’t mean much if McConnell brings nothing to the floor.

If they’d do it before the shutdown (i.e. come up with a “deal”), I would have been angry but not overly surprised.

Now? There’s no way I could seem them caving that would do anything but ensure that Donny won reelection next year. There is so much invested in seeing him forced to accept defeat that working a “deal” would be political suicide for all involved.

Ayep. If the DNC cave now, that’s pretty much it for their House majority. This is the line in the sand they’ve made, if they cross it then there will never be another time where they can convincingly say “This is about principles” without everybody (including liberals) screaming “BULLSHIT!” Why? Because Trump will have proven that if he holds his breath long enough, eventually Dems will cave because they always cave.

It’s not Trump holding the country hostage, it’s the GOP. McConnell could stop this at any moment but he doesn’t. Trump does not have this Constitutional authority — let’s place blame where it belongs: the entire Republican party.

They are between 923 and 935 Vendome Street (actually, the stairs start on Vendome Street and end on Descanso Drive, at Del Monte Drive), in the Silver Lake district (northwest of downtown, just south of Sunset Boulevard).

The third step from the bottom has a worn plaque noting that the Oscar winning short was shot there. Sad that there’s a lot of graffiti at the top of the steps and several of them need restoration.

The House is a done deal. Pelosi will get whatever she wants passed.

I’m talking about her passing spending bills in the House putting pressure on the Senate. Trump may not give a fuck, but there have to be at least a few senators who are starting to get nervous.

And if spending bills pass both houses and Trump vetoes them, then he completely owns the shutdown. As bad as things look for him now, they could get way worse if he keeps government shut down in defiance of the House and Senate.

I went and looked her up. She used to be a singer for the Pussycat Dolls, though she apparently left the group before its first album came out.

Chrystal Neria (born August 28, 1984), known professionally as Kaya Jones, is a Canadian-American pop singer, model and actress. She originally became known in 2003 for performing with the American girl group the Pussycat Dolls. Since 2004, she has pursued a solo career in music. In 2017, she joined the National Diversity Coalition for Trump as their Native American Ambassador for Trump. (emphasis mine)

She started a record company in 2011 called Hueman Race Records, but the site is “down for maintenance” and the record company seems to exist only on Twitter and Facebook.

Failing upwards as conservatives do, she is now associated with Trump, though I don’t know if she’s actually being paid by him or this so-called “diversity coalition.”

Okay I guess:

Malaysian King Sultan Muhammad V abdicates amid reports he married Russian beauty queen (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Malaysian King Sultan Muhammad V has abdicated in an unexpected move after just two years on the throne.

Key points:

Sultan Muhammad V was one of Malaysia’s youngest monarchs
He is said to have married a former Russian beauty queen in November
There has been no official confirmation of the wedding

The palace said in a statement that the 49-year-old ruler had resigned as Malaysia’s 15th king with immediate effect, cutting short his five-year term.

It is the first abdication in the nation’s history and no reason was given in the statement.

Sultan Muhammad V, ruler of north-east Kelantan state, took his oath of office in December 2016, becoming one of Malaysia’s youngest constitutional monarchs.

A lot of people in the comment thread seem to still be stuck on “I don’t understand why they are voting against their best interest” as if this was an economic issue.

They are voting in their interest. Their interest is racism. It’s why soybean farmers in North Dakota and Nebraska are all in on this even as their farms are being destroyed. They don’t care about the money, their property, or their families.

They care about the racism, as President Johnson put it when talking about the Civil Rights Act.

Malaysia has an interesting constitutional monarchy. Rather than one hereditary ruler, the leaders/rulers of each of several provinces elect one from their number to serve as head of state for a five-year term. There are questions whether the Sultan is in poor health or whether there’s some sort of scandal about to break. Anyway, usually the monarchy in Malaysia is deadly dull, so some reports are wondering how this abdication will play with the public.

Read the excerpts earlier, basically Huckleberry Butch-Me-Up is screaming the usual, that the DNC needs to get on the same “BORDER CRISIS!!!!” page the GOP are on and accept a wall being built alongside whatever other demands for “border security” that the GOP can come up with.

Other demands for border security:
Tax cuts
Cutting Social Security

Well, the demands on the table seem to be wall funding (i.e. a down payment), along with more funding for BP agents, bed, and deportation judges. And maybe a few bucks to actually do what the DNC agree with, which is repairing and upgrading the existing barriers.

When the Obama admin took time to prepare for the ‘13 shutdown and closed down parks/rec areas, the GOP lost their fucking minds over what they viewed as punitive actions being taken to punish the public for the DNC’s refusal to “negotiate.”

By contrast, this admin went barreling into a shutdown without any prior planning, and is now shocked to find out that shit doesn’t just keep rolling ahead on sheer momentum. See also: Mark Meadows being shocked that SNAP funding doesn’t just get automatically renewed despite a gov’t shutdown.

It’s also (as I saw one pundit state earlier) basically Pelosi giving the White House the middle finger by only sending staffers rather than showing up in-person. Though, to be fair, the reports that Pence basically can’t negotiate a damned thing because Trump won’t allow him to makes these meetings a joke anyway.

One reason Republicans can’t recognize America’s real enemies is that they don’t have the language to describe them. This is because they have co-opted terms like “extreme,” “radical” and “terrorist” to describe people like Clinton and Obama. Someone like, say, the Stalin Society of America can come along and they fail to notice it because all the linguistic niches are already occupied.

I had a thought about taxes and wages: Can anyone actually earn more than $200/hr? And what I mean is in the sense that what they actually do, what they contribute to the economy in the sense of labor (and when I talk about labor I mean anything from physical labor like collecting garbage to more mental tasks like software development or management).

My belief is that there really is an upper bound to what a person should earn for what they contribute, and that any earnings after that can easily be subjected to significantly higher tax rates.

Basically, what we’re seeing right now is what happens when you have a sociopath in charge of the gov’t. The most indicative sign of that was his response to a question about a safety net for furloughed employees being a “stronger border.” Not to mention the suggestions from his office as well as the unfunded agencies to have employees “negotiate” with their landlords or offer to do some work in exchange for missing payments.

And what I mean is in the sense that what they actually do, what they contribute to the economy in the sense of labor (and when I talk about labor I mean anything from physical labor like collecting garbage to more mental tasks like software development or management).

When I bought my first computer, I could produce the same amount of my work in 60 fewer hours per month (compared to when I used a typewriter). It took less than 3 months of increased production to cover the retail price I paid. If for the rest of that computer’s life the company that designed & built it had been entitled to 3 hours per month of my earnings, I’d still come out way ahead. And there’s 40 million Americans also bought that same computer. Yes, people can deserve more than $200/hr for the work that put that computer on my desk.

35 years ago I had this same argument with people who wondered does a basketball player really “earn” or “deserve” what Magic was going to be paid. The obvious answer — “how many more tickets can they sell with him than without him? How much more can they charge for those tickets? How much additional revenue does the team, and all the other players, get every year because he got them into the playoffs?”

Another bit that I’m reading is that the WH has again bumped up their demands, now from $5.6B to $5.7B. For people frequently bitching about “negotiations” and “compromise,” they seem to be thinking that if they just keep ratcheting up their demands, the DNC will have to give them more in the final “deal.”

The chain at my company goes:
Me
Manager

I definitely don’t see the skills set going up in such a way that the president makes a lot more than my manager. About the only reason they should make a lot more is if they have more risk for failing (which means I don’t believe in golden parachutes). The earnings for those positions should be asymptotic, especially since each level above my manager is really a manager of managers.

How far do you let it all go before everyone would be bitching at the Democrats to do something to save them?

Even at a cost. Because that happens to good people dealing with the bad.

Where does politics end and concern for real people take over?

It isn’t going to come from Trump. Everyone has said he is a psychopath. Can’t count on that to change.

So how do you have a standoff with a psychopath? Especially one enabled by his party for who knows for what reason.

I want the Democrats to stay strong. But I also fear that could come at a high cost that will only increase.

If McCain and radicals like the Freedom Caucus continue to be willing to let it burn, do you let it burn?

If it got crazy enough I would hope the courts take over and ask US Marshals or Secret Service to intervene. What is really doable? I don’t know.

If it goes far enough some very drastic stuff is going to have to happen.

Democrats will have to do something and they will get blamed for a lot of it, as they always do.

I definitely agree that wages haven’t increased properly over the past 40 years, and the disconnect between wages and productivity is a cause. At the same time, if it makes you more productive, doesn’t that just mean there’s less you’re needing to contribute for transaction? For example: Is the guy who operates a backhoe actually contributing the labor of 10 or 20 people with shovels (or 1000 people with spoons), or is he contributing the labor of one person better?

And if the Democrats do cave, this will just happen again, and we will have traded the principle of “no racist wall for any price” for nothing.

The best we can do is make sure we get our message out. If the press is going to cover it with a magic balance fairy, then it might require taking out adverts and paying for them to get the message out.

If the GOP is actually going to just dig in, we already have a dictatorship.

If it goes far enough some very drastic stuff is going to have to happen.

Democrats will have to do something and they will get blamed for a lot of it, as they always do.

What stops the Freedom Caucus from starting future fires? They’ve proven that the DNC will do anything to put the flames out if enough damage is done, so why would they hesitate if it gets them what they want in the end? Trump’s not going to stop at demands for $5B, he’s going to demand more and he’s going to start further fires to make it happen. Next time, it won’t be federal employees going without paychecks, it’ll be the nation defaulting on its debt and the economic holocaust that results from that. If the GOP think that the DNC will cave before they allow that to happen, do you think they’ll hesitate to demand more wall funding and threaten a default unless they get it?

How far do you let it all go before everyone would be bitching at the Democrats to do something to save them?

Even at a cost. Because that happens to good people dealing with the bad.

Where does politics end and concern for real people take over?

It isn’t going to come from Trump. Everyone has said he is a psychopath. Can’t count on that to change.

So how do you have a standoff with a psychopath? Especially one enabled by his party for who knows for what reason.

I want the Democrats to stay strong. But I also fear that could come at a high cost that will only increase.

How about we make those demands and place that blame on McConnell? Pelosi is sending the senate bills that they’d already passed with a veto-proof majority last session.

The 2011 debt crisis triggered by the Tea Party caucus and threat of a government shutdown caused a downgrade of US debt by S&P.

The fiscal conservatives have already gone to that well. They’ll do it again.

At the point which transport or other services required by the owners of the Republican Party impacts their profit or business in a significant way, they will threaten to pull the plug on their party.

If the GOP has decided to go all-in on dictatorship and one-party rule and even tell their backers to take a hike, that brings up a different political dynamic, no possible outcomes of which I can see as good.

Yup. At that point you’re only negotiating the size of the ransom.

This entire crisis was created by Trump and backed by the GOP. There is no reason we should give in to their demands.

One could argue all the shutdowns perpetrated by the GOP over the last couple of decades were prompted by giving in with the previous crisis they created.

Charles, I’m having issues (and have been having issues) uploading pics; in Chrome, it hasn’t given me confirmation that pics haves been uploaded for months, even though they did and showed in my gallery. That was up until 2-3 weeks ago, when I just haven’t been able to upload any pics through Chrome; again, no confirmation, but also no errors, it just stays on the “uploading” dialog and then nothing new shows in the gallery. These problems, I’ve had at home and at work on separate machines and separate Chrome installs.

I tried just now to upload a 3.8 MB GIF in both Chrome and Edge and it failed in both; in Chrome, it did as I wrote above, but, in Edge, it gave me this error:

{“success”:false,”errorMsg”:”Maximum file size exceeded (500K for PNG or GIF).”}

And what is the reason for their anger with the Dems?

They didn’t (fold) help earlier.

Listen to the media. We have an example right above. Anderson Cooper and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Cooper can’t even breach the Department of Defense budget. That is unquestionable.

I heard two comments today on local political programs (NBC 4 and CBS 10 local).
