Our raging Narcissist in Chief has shut down the government over his demand for 5.7 billion dollars to pay for the xenophobic fantasy wall he promised hundreds of times Mexico would pay for, and he’s now been talking openly about declaring a “national emergency” (when there is no emergency) and using the military to seize land on the border.

Is this when he’ll announce his fake emergency and provoke a full-on constitutional crisis? At this point, he has nothing to lose and nobody to talk him out of it. And by doing this he’d immediately cause a massive amount of chaos, his traditional modus operandi.

Maybe this is just his heavy-handed way of trying to scare the Democrats into giving him what he wants. Or maybe we’re about to see things escalate into a whole new level of bad craziness.

More importantly, the federal Courts only have enough money to stay open through the end of this week.

The system has enough money left over from fees and other sources to run through Jan. 11, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, which supports the judiciary. After that, nonessential workers at the 94 federal district courts, and at higher courts across the country, may have to stay home even as skeleton crews show up — without pay — to handle matters deemed essential under U.S. law, including many criminal cases.

That, to use very specific legal jargon, is incredibly fucked up.

No outrage from Republicans over what is a transparent attempt to utilize military force as a means of getting what he can’t get legitimately.

No calls from Republicans for the White House to reconsider such.

No Republicans threatening to join their Dem colleagues in suing the White House in the event that they go through with this.

No Republicans even expressing “concern” over such a move.

Whether it’s because they hope this will give him an “out” to reopen the gov’t or because they actively support such a move, either way we have a political party in this country that is okay with the imposition of an authoritarian dictatorship that serves their own ends. We have one, a shotgun. My wife at one time owned a .38, but sold it to a firearms dealer when her balance went bad. She felt she could no longer safely handle it.

on that note, one of the ways historians have deduced that the Romans were mostly all lead-poisoned is by studying their diets. It’s like I said last night about the last shutdown, the media was convinced that it was going to hurt the DNC in the midterms because shutting down the gov’t over a demand that was seen as “unpopular” (i.e. DACA extension) would hurt their popularity with voters while boosting Trump’s for refusing to give in to “hostage-taking.” There were even liberal pundits who’d thought that taking the stand then was a bad move and was going to be detrimental to hopes to retake the House.

So yeah, I’m not exactly hopeful that the GOP, afraid of how this might hurt them in 2020, are going to stand up to Trump anytime soon.

My niece had two kids. Then she adopted 2 little kids from Ethiopia. Then she adopted two tweens from Ethiopia. One of the tweens turned into a real nightmare of behavior problems - lying, stealing, acting out - and is now living with a different family, possibly as part of not going to Juvie.

Gnarly Knob isn’t a trail, it’s just a spot to pick a line down the double blacks. The view is very airy up there, you can see all the way to the valley floor and can look about five miles down the valley. I don’t know why they only painted a single diamond.

She in some ways needs to use less numbers and say something like “a lot of the funds that go to the Defense Department could be used for more important things many in this country would like to see, like health insurance and infrastructure.”

Actual figures can be used to criticize and scare people.

Also, is it wise to say insurance should be free which it seems she is saying? The money has to come from somewhere. I think it should be stated that the money you are already paying for insurance could be lessened if it were a tax and went into a big USA Insurance pool where it can be used for single payer and scaled to how much the government adds to help the needy, etc. Then it needs to be explained how that can cut overall costs because so much waste is in middle-men gouging.

As I said the other night, she is young and she will learn to deal with the media in a better way. But she does need to realize the media is out to define her and she doesn’t need to give them the chance.

Right now it might be best if she says less, not more and in Congress do more, not less. She will learn the craft. Right now she might be a little too energetic and that can lead to being baited by the media.

And I would give the same advice to any young freshman congressperson, man or woman. Learn those ropes before they hang you with them.

Got back an hour or so ago from Urgent Care. Tetanus shot (because I have no idea when my last one was) and a scrip for antibiotics. I was playing tug of war last night with our new doggo and she got really into it and accidentally chomped on my hand. I was like, “fuck, that hurt, but I’ll just rinse it out, put on some anti-bio ointment, bandage, and go to bed.” But by 6PM tonight it was swelling and red, so I did something I usually do when I sneeze—I looked up medical advice online. Oops, should have gone this morning. The good news is that while taking my vitals they also told me my blood pressure is getting right up there. My doctor knows this, too. Looks like BP meds are on the way after our next appt. next month.

My grandfather was a used book collector. On his way to or from work in the City, he’d stop by a used bookstore and pick up one or two. Or more. As a child, I had access to the collected works of Dickens, de Maupassant, Shakespeare, O. Henry, Poe, Stevenson, and many more, all right there in my house. One summer I decided to catalog every single book in our house. The total count, ours + grandpa’s, was around 1,200. Sadly, a lot of those were ruined when a pipe bust in the basement, and others got all moldy in the Kentucky humidity. So, now our family book count is considerably less than it was when I was a kid, but OTOH my kids are all quite well read.

The problem is the emergency powers act specifically gave the president extremely wide latitude to define what an emergency is. There is no guarantee the SCOTUS would shoot this down. They did specifically enumerate what powers the executive would have during an emergency but there are many of them so I am sure the lawyers are going through all of those to determine which powers he can use to get the wall built. That will be where any challenge lies.

We shall have to see. I think that, since he’s a sociopath, we’re either going to have to hit him where it hurts - his money - or break the Senate GOP’s will. This does mean we are going to have to stand behind the Democrats in Congress. Generally in Colorado a double black is a trail that exceeds 45 degrees and/or has cliff terrain and other big obstacles.

IOW, an inclination and objects in the path which will at least make your ass pucker… I figured the characterstics of the trail would be something like that. Also, the “Gnarly Knob” point, how difficult is it to get to it, would you call it a black? Could it be that it is black because of the trail there?
It’s been decades since I stood on a pair of skis, and I prefer my trails horizontal (I love cross-country skiing (have a reputation as a Finn to live up to)), but I seem to recall that there were trails that would be red which would branch off into black, and as a side note, the blacks would regularly be closed due to avalanche risk.
And refreshing myself on my EU markings, they have triple blacks here in Scandinavia o.O

The presidential oath of office contains 35 words and one core promise: to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Since virtually the moment Donald J. Trump took that oath two years ago, he has been violating it.

He has repeatedly put his own interests above those of the country. He has used the presidency to promote his businesses. He has accepted financial gifts from foreign countries. He has lied to the American people about his relationship with a hostile foreign government. He has tolerated cabinet officials who use their position to enrich themselves.

To shield himself from accountability for all of this — and for his unscrupulous presidential campaign — he has set out to undermine the American system of checks and balances. just did a tour of the websites of the “metro” areas TV websites that comprise some of Southern our border cities (San Diego, Tucson, El Paso, Laredo and Brownsville) and strangely enough, none of them are listing any news regarding a crisis at the border… but there were articles about Trump’s travels and his statements that there IS a border crisis and some of them go on to state that there is SPECIFICALLY no border crisis.

Now its plainly obvious that even the local media outlets are in cahoots with the MSM big lies and fake news process, obviously they are insidious in their reach in order to prevent the truth from getting out…. /////////////////////////

I watched the Rachel Maddow - D Leonhardt interview.

I agreed with much of what he said.

But, truthfully, I have difficulty finding any patience with the NYT. It suppressed information about the Trump family that it should have divulged in 2015. It is slowly divulging this information now. But during the interim, this suppression has allowed the administration to cause multiple deaths and ruin hundreds if not thousands of lives.

My view is that Trump by closing down the government is attacking it.

By declaring a State of Emergency, he is attacking the Constitution. He probably has one more step available to escalate here, some sort of Reichstag Fire style incident.

When he needs to escalate beyond that, he has nothing left but to create an existential threat. A war some place seems most likely. In 2016 the options seemed to be North Korea or Iran. It looks like North Korea is off the table. Most likely due to what would happen to Tokyo and Seoul.

I hope that I am wrong about how far Trump is willing to go.

That’s a heavy row to hoe. It would redefine what a “national security” issue is. It’s not 9/11. It’s not not Iran pushing toward developing nukes. It’s not even Chinese theft of intellectual property.

It’s people showing up and asking for asylum.

The whole concept of designating what is happening on the border a “national security” issue is absurd. It’s not a security issue. It’s a policy issue. Those aren’t invaders, they’re unaccompanied kids and terrified families.

We used to be better than this. We used to be Americans.

I’m truly scared of how tomorrow will play out. I fear he will declare a state of emergency and adjourn the House of Representatives. Mc Connell adjourns the Senate sine die and then Nancy and the Democrats turn around and vote out articles of impeachment. With McConnell refusing to reverse his sine die adjournment things will spin out of control.

This would give Putin the cover to grab Ukraine and Lithuania.

Been gaming this scenario out all day and it’s getting me more scared with each passing second!

Weird question for you. As you mentioned, most of the original Chinese immigrants were from the more southerly parts of China. Where, I assume, rice is the main grain. Is/are there wheat or sorghum based cuisines in Northern China/Manchuria?

No, they printed my whole letter (and corrected a spelling error to boot).

Sen. Erdman was all over the map in his opinion piece, so I picked out one issue (his claim traffic fatalities involving maryjane were up 100%) and tore that apart.

A couple days ago a letter was published from a fellow in Bellevue (a suburb of Omaha) saying Erdman was fear-mongering. He attacked a different point from Erdman’s opinion piece.

In fact, there is the great rice/noodle divide in China. Southerners tend to favor rice, as the climate and terrain favor its cultivation, while northerners tend to prefer wheat noodles, since wheat grows better in the colder latitudes than rice. Noodles are also made from rice, potatoes, and sweet potatoes, but wheat noodles are most common. Sorghum, AFAIK, only enters cuisine as one foundation for baijiu (Chinese firewater), and not as a grain. At least, I have never eaten anything here made from sorghum.

OTOH, I did have sorghum syrup when I lived in western Kentucky. It’s a bit like molasses.

I would suspect that additional territorial seizures in Ukraine are pretty much a given at this point. The Russian Army has already moved up and deployed it’s combat resources for this task. I am further guessing that it will be another bite rather than all of the Ukraine.

And Russia has been active in parts of former Yugoslavia. Particularly in areas where Muslim majority areas have been partitioned off Serbia, leaving a restless Serbian minority. Analysts are expecting some moves in that region.

Also remember that removing 5-6 billion in currently programmed Pentagon funding for a ‘wall’ is not going to help military readiness.

From what I understand you are saying, it sounds like the turmoil has been at the political echelons. And that the Chinese in general are still welcoming of Americans. And people recognizing that everybody is still “human” is definitely a very good thing.

I have heard that the Chinese business class has been showing great interest in European wines. But I know zilch of Chinese traditional winemaking. I assume that there is a Chinese beermaking industry. And baiju sounds like a distilled alcohol.

At this point, my only concern is the foreign experts bureau deciding that I’m too old for a work permit and thus a residence permit, which would just about end my teaching career in China. I have never had any troubles from the people of China, who by and large welcome foreigners, especially foreigners who stay more than one year and take the time to learn at least some Chinese.

And Twain was right. If more people traveled beyond their normal milieu, they might perhaps be more tolerant of others and understand that there are many more ways to live than they do.

Beer in the global sense of the word has been in China since 1900 or so, when Russians set up a brewery in Harbin and Germans set up one in Qingdao (Tsingtao). Now there are several regional brands and an increasing number of craft breweries.

Grape wine has been in China for thousands of years, but was only enjoyed at the imperial level. Since 2000 though, some national vineyards, assisted by French advisors, have been producing some surprisingly good wines, mostly reds. And as you mention, now wealthy Chinese have become interested in fancy imported labels. One of my former students now has a cushy job working for a French importer in Beijing.

Baijiu is distilled liquor made from a variety of grains, and can be either smooth as silk or as harsh as paint stripper, depending on aging and quality (and price). Traditionally, baijiu is drunk with meals and like Russian vodka each cup must be drained after each toast, leading to quick inebriation if you’re not used to it. Nixon reportedly got pretty sloshed drinking baijiu with Mao and Zhou during his historic visit. In the USA, Moutai is the most common brand.

Tomorrow night, Trump is going to take a dump on the constitution, 2 1/2 centuries of precedent, and the wishes of the majority of the citizenry who loathe him, and declare himself de-facto dictator of the most powerful nation on earth, based on a shitty reality show.

And his followers will turn their Dunning-Kruger sycophancy dials up to “orgasim X 11.11ty.” And the media will scurry furiously to do their NPR best at pretending there is actually two valid sides to all of this, while washing their hands in their complicity born out of fear. And the republican party will pretend this is all not just normal, but laudatory.

And then, the world as we know it ends. Not with a bang or a whimper, but with a bad comb-over and a shitty spray on tan.

Fuck, I’m tired.
