From the previous thread:

re: #467 BlueGrl21

There are LGBT Christians. It’s a paradox!

There sure are.

I’ve asked my sister why she clings to an ideology in which the holy book calls for the death of LGBT people.

It is the usual cherry-picking and such.

When your personality is wrapped up in your beliefs, when those beliefs are challenged it feels like a personal attack. If you are unwilling to accept new information, you will do anything to defend that belief. Each sort of Christian calls the other “not a true Christian.” She does it too.

She cannot be reasoned out of an ideology she reasoned herself into.

That is also why you have Log Cabin Republicans.

I’m trying to find out how one of my matches and I are related. Unfortunately we think the connection is with my grandmother’s maternal grandfather, a man whose name we don’t know and her paternal grandmother who we can’t find much about. Really nice lady. I like talking with her since she doesn’t care about the ethnicity stuff. Just the story aspect of it all.

I think the reason why the science of dna ethnicity is complicated is because we don’t know exactly how long every group has been in their area. I have a lot of Eastern European but I can see and know there is Germanic influences in surnames in my family. Now is that because the original people with that surname were Germanic or were they Slavs who had their surnames Germanized in the Austrian Hungarian empire days? Hard to know for sure. My results, experienced, & personal beliefs tho have been reenforcing. I’m certainly proud of the cultures I descend from but I’m happy to share it and feel inclusion is the way. To my relief quite a few of my extended family I’ve met share that sentiment.

“Dramatic footage of people throwing themselves down Cooper’s Hill at the annual cheese rolling contest in the UK. Injuries included a dislocated shoulder as well as numerous grazes and bruises. “

Injuries at annual cheese rolling contest 2018 in UK

From the wiki page:

The Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper’s Hill, near Gloucester in England.[1] It was traditionally held by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth, Gloucestershire, but now people from all over the world take part. The Guardian newspaper called it a “world-famous event”, with winners from the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Nepal.

From the top of the hill, a 7-9 pounds (3.2-4.1 kilograms) round of Double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down the hill, and competitors then start racing down the hill after it. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. The competitors are aiming to catch the cheese; however, it has around a one-second head start and can reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour (110 kilometres per hour), enough to knock over and injure a spectator. In the 2013 competition, a foam replica replaced the cheese for reasons of safety. The winner was given the prize of an actual cheese after the competition.

Have a great evening, and mind the cheese rolling.

re: #32 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

Related. Rahaf was saved by social media, specifically Twitter. She created an account while holed up in the airport hotel in Bangkok, and within hours was tweeting directly with journalists and human rights activists. Saudi officials refused to comment to Reuters for their story, but the kicker is this bit.

“When she first arrived in Thailand, she opened a new site (account) and the followers reached about 45,000 within one day,” a Saudi official speaking in Arabic through a translator tells Thai officials in the video.

“I wish you had taken her phone, it would have been better than (taking) her passport,” the official said [to Thai immigration officers].

Twitter may sometimes harbor the scum of the Earth, but it can also be a powerful tool for good.

More details about Rahaf’s case, from the Thai media this time. The Thai immigration chief said his officers could not have taken Rahaf’s mobile phone, as the Saudis had suggested, because it would have violated her rights. Also, it seems that Thailand is politely telling the Saudis to F off by cooperating with the UN refugee agency despite Thailand not being a party to international refugee accords.

Gotta love how the spin on the Politico poll is going, saying “MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SAY THERE’S A BORDER CRISIS!!!”, rather than the reality a majority either view it as a problem not necessitating a major response or don’t believe there’s a problem at all.

Reminds me of all the “Majority oppose the ACA!” poll readings.

Rosenstein-resignation rumours are being floated again as of an hour ago. I think we have to pray they’re as false now as in October, though at least the House can try to pass an independent-counsel statute now, once Mueller’s officially fired.

But wouldn’t any investigation, even if the Rs in the Senate didn’t block it, have to start from scratch?

Many people were there that I knew already. Some new faces as well. One lady and I got on the subject of bread, which I have been making enough masse since the first stroke in 2017. The lady makes challah bread and pointed me to some books and also got into a discussion with lady #2 about proofing and rising of bread. All in all excellent. Vicious babushka was be a great addition to this convo.

Then….it took the turn.
Lady ” I don’t know what is wrong with your state. Did you know that Hillary and Cuomo were going to pass a law stating that abortions could be given up until the day before birth”
Me; “why no. I didn’t but I don’t think you are right because Hillary was a senator for the state in federal government and Cuomo is the governor of the state”
Lady ” I pray for your state and for Cuomo to get rid of abortion”
Random dude ” we hate Cuomo for the gun control laws”
Me ” I am for gun control and am pro choice. “
Lady ” well good people with guns have stopped bsd people”
Me”statistically no. Sorry. In a fight with the school in my area about this. And…” Cite facts
Lady. ” Well I don’t know the statistics. I’ll pray for you and your state.”
Me ” ok”

She was my teaching partner where we had to teach to the rest of the trainees.

Awesome.
Back to the grind.

If you read that AP piece it isn’t horrible. The headline is what kills them.

Get the clicks. Nothing else matters. And they all know people don’t read anything…or they might read something until their view is opposed (which would be a few words into that AP piece).

Pointless, destructive headlines.

Does it matter? The senate would confirm a kumquat if trump nominated it.

I am sincerely hoping that this is happening because Mueller is wrapping up. A couple of days ago, he asked for an extension of the Grand Jury, six months, which is apparently a one time thing. He would have to impanel a new GJ if it goes beyond that. I am hoping and praying he is in his end game now.

Yesterday’s redaction disaster for Manafort clearly shows that this is a big deal, likely the biggest nugget we have gotten thus far. I am pretty surprised it’s not a bigger deal. We’ll have to see how today’s news cycle plays out but that really was just shy of the MOAB’s (with the final mother being donny and junior).

Also, it was noted on twitter (which is famous for accuracy, I know) that Jr was saying he was getting indicted (again).

This is what we end up with in a county where pretty much any mental health care is financially out of reach for most people. We’re not built to handle everything alone, but we’re taught this self-made myth that no one has any help being successful or if you’re sick or hurt it’s your fault. The rich are blessed and the poor are damned. So, humans being humans, they seek out something or somewhere they fit whether it’s healthy or not. The internet has made it far too easy to swim in toxic shit all day and the most broken people are only gonna break more. Sorry, I’m in a mood.

The article. HAHAHAHA!

Kevin Martin, the young conservative activist who started the competing group, said he and other students created the organization as a place to talk about “where we can talk about the way we’re getting treated.”

Heal Our Voice’s website is filled with a number of anonymous gripes, ranging from Kirk’s celebrity status on the right to an alleged hard-partying atmosphere at Turning Point conferences. In a statement, Turning Point says underage drinking is grounds for attendees to be expelled from conferences.

Johnson told The Daily Beast that she joined Heal Our Voice in part because of a feeling that some political views are off-limits at Turning Point events.

“Charlie Kirk can be a little bit of a snowflake — or a lot a bit of a snowflake,” she said.

This isn’t Turning Point’s first brush with controversy on the right. Attendees at previous conferences have also spoken out about sexual harassment and assault at the events. The group has also clashed with other college conservative groups, and is still dogged by a disastrous diaper protest organized by some of its members.

Meanwhile, pro-Trump activists blamed Kirk in part after rapper Kanye West distanced himself from the group amid a merchandise spat with a related group, “Blexit.”

Both “Heal Our Voice” and the Kirk memes suggest cracks in Turning Point’s main appeal to older donors: that Kirk and his group can fire up young Republicans and up the GOP’s gap in the youth vote. Instead, they’re left trying to stomp out fires created by attendees at the group’s own conferences.

Josh Marshall is also surprised:

I think the hoopla over President Trump’s Oval Office address tonight has temporarily blunted or distracted people from the full import of what the Times just reported about the Trump campaign polling data. They may even have missed some of it themselves since they buried that nugget well down into the piece.[emphasis added] Paul Manafort was secretly sharing confidential campaign polling data with a top Russian oligarch who is closely tied to Vladimir Putin. To me this really ends the debate about ‘collusion’, to the extent there still was one. It seems bigger than the Trump Tower meeting.

To my mind, it almost makes moot whether or not Cohen was in Prague.

re: #5 Charles Johnson

Media tries both siding this shutdown, which is entirely on Trump and the GOP - specifically Trump and McConnell.

Democrats didn’t want a shutdown and they weren’t going to be extorted into paying for Trump’s boondoggle wall. Trump then explicitly said he’s taking credit for the shutdown.

Aiding Trump is McConnell, who in December passed a continuing resolution by voice vote that included no funding for the wall. Voice vote - unanimous consent. There were no dissenters to the clean continuing resolution.

McConnell wont put that same bill language up to a vote because he doesn’t want to embarrass Trump now because Trump loses. That’s why we have a shutdown.

This isn’t about Democrats.

This is about a bunch of Republicans who don’t know how to govern, think that sabotaging functioning government is their right and obligation, and that all of the GOP actions are meant to result in more tax breaks for millionaires like Trump while the burdens flow to everyone else. They figure that if they break government and nothing bad happens they prove the case that government is too big and they can gut essential parts of the government (again for the sweet tax breaks).

All the while, this immigration policy is straight out of the white nationalist playbook and plays well with angry white guys who are furthest from the actual border with Mexico.

The people who live in border states and live closest to the border are opposed to the shutdown and the wall - because they see how all this works, and they’d be the ones bearing the burden (from the government seizing land by eminent domain for the boondoggle, etc.) White nationalist immigration policy might play well in Iowa with the Steve King GOP base, but these are also the people least likely to encounter someone who isn’t white. They’ve got themselves a bogeyman and aren’t going to give up that ghost. This is how the GOP operates.

McConnell has put party over nation in giving Trump cover.

That puts the shutdown squarely on the GOP, and we’re even starting to see some Senate GOPers bristle at this.

Having media outlets try to both sides this bulkshit is just that - bulkshit. AP isn’t the only ones to do this- even NPR was trying to both sides this but they’re getting pushback from folks who rightfully point out that Trump explicitly took credit for the shutdown.

The GOP is no longer a responsible political party. It’s a party of saboteurs and agents provocateurs who are compromised and complicit. The more we learn about Mueller’s ongoing investigations and the spinoffs to federal prosecutors, the more we’re seeing the web of criminality that springs from the Russia-GOP-Trump-NRA nexus.

Futile though that monument may be, he could have gotten it, too, had he been willing to trade something attractive to Democrats. But Trump was never willing to bargain. Senate Republicans would not let him: They saw no point in the border wall, and were unwilling to barter for it

Trump has always bullied or threatened to get his way.

I’ve been trying to give AOC a fair shake, but this is like something a cab driver told Tom Friedman or Jacob Wohl overheard in a hipster coffee shop. The first missing paycheck hasn’t happened yet.

Possibly. Or the furloughed worker could simply be looking ahead to Friday and the paycheck afterward, which would reflect the weeks missed so far.

The 2018 GSA payroll calendar shows that paychecks were supposed to be issued on December 28.

The 2019 payroll calendar shows the next pay day is tomorrow. Fear of people missing that paycheck is quite real, since there’s no sign the GOP or Trump are going to end this shutdown anytime soon. Tomorrow would be the second paycheck that is held up due to the shutdown.

The 2018 GSA payroll calendar shows that paychecks were supposed to be issued on December 28.

Those checks would reflect work through December 21 which was funded. So those checks were paid.

But furloughed workers would naturally start thinking of missing paychecks once they started missing days of work.

I was fortunate this time in that my agency’s appropriations were passed in the Fall.

Bringing up the wonderful world of “holdback”. Even when they start back, furloughed workers won’t see a check at the end of their first pay period.

The House will fight to get Mueller’s work product from the DOJ. Plus Mueller has spread a lot of it around to other prosecutors. I don’t think Barr will be able to keep it all bottled up.

Say what you will about Rick Wilson, but his Trump critiques are always on point.

After 17 days of a government shutdown temper tantrum, Trump needed a game-changing home run of a speech to change the political climate in D.C. He failed.

This speech wasn’t about saving his utterly fake wall. The $5.7 billion dollars he’s demanded as his vig for ending the shutdown isn’t even close to being seriously considered, and this speech was an overt admission he’s out of airspeed, altitude, and ideas. The crisis he proudly created will end without a wall, and he knows it.

This speech was supposed to be about forcing the national dialogue to stay on the border wall. No such luck. He reeked of defeat, clearly didn’t want to be there, and it showed.

Trump looked exhausted, squinty, and bored, reading in a near-monotone from the Teleprompter. It went over like a wet fart.

The hysterical Know-Nothing show that flooded America’s airwaves on Tuesday evening was Trumpian boilerplate: Scary immigrants are coming to kill you! Drugs are coming over the border!

This is also about Pelosi being from CA.

So far though, Wexton has been great. She showed solidarity with the many federal employees we have in VA-10 by refusing her salary during the shutdown, she’s offered her support to the trans community, and she’s backed DC statehood too. It’s not even been a week and I’m thrilled with what my work and the work of others got us here in VA-10.

It also raises a question: Did everyone receive a paycheck on the 28th?

In past shutdowns, everyone has been timely paid for work performed before the shutdown started. Paychecks go out about a week after the end of the pay period. It’s possible some folks fell through the cracks this time, but if so I haven’t heard about it.

And we only learned that stuff yesterday because of lawyers screwing up.

In a way that tells me Mueller has a lot more as he holds his cards tight.

He probably already knows how those poll numbers were used. We have to remember he already indicted the Russian troll army. To me that means he has actual computer info as to how they worked.

If he has data that shows after Manafort passed them the polling numbers there was immediate activity at Facebook, Twitter and YouTube that ties to areas the numbers showed there influence was needed, then he knows the manner in which they worked.

Now he knows how they knew where to work. He probably already had people go to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to check files of activity and where they came from, maybe even has tweets directly tied to the trollers.

I was looking at the second part of that tweet, the “don’t stop blocking the wall on my account”. That just sounds so contrived. So, either she did make it up, or someone came in selling the kind of bs that O’Keefe’s group is known for.

Edit: This is also taking into account what you are saying.

A problem Grassley has is that IA needs migrant workers. A multitude of stories are saying just that. It is hurting farmers as is the pointless trade war.

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out in the polls.

One of the things we have going against us is that the POTUS office used to be revered and a broadcast message meant something. Just like news used to be Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings.

Breaking out of that trust, especially for older people, is going to be tough. I think that’s why Fox initially was so well received (and it wasn’t as nuts as it is now). So, we’ll have to see how this all plays out.

MSNBC had a segment on her a few days ago . I wasn’t a fan (she’s too old) before but she was very impressive and engaging.

Was that her interview with Rachel Maddow? I caught some parts of that. Liz Warren is passionate about the inequalities in this country. She has some of the same points as Bernie, but she also knows there are a lot of reasons for the problems.

That’s why I like AOC more than I do Bernie as well OA. AOC may have gotten involved in Bernie’s campaign three years ago but she correctly sees as do you, Warren, and other folks here that there are other factors regarding the inequalities. Warren doesn’t dismiss PoC the way Bernie does too.

lawhawk  Jan 9, 2019 • 9:38:21am

Reason 5000 on why the wall wont do any of the things Trump claims.

Asylum is legal immigration. Federal and international law permit it. This is a proper way to seek to immigrate to the US. You can enter via a port of entry or surrender to a law enforcement officer and claim asylum. The time to process has been screwed up thanks to inadequate funding, and the shutdown makes it even tougher. Trump’s family separation policy was intent on trying to deter/deny people seeking asylum from even coming to the border to present themselves.

The wall wont stop drug trafficking, when the majority of drugs come through ports of entry or by sea or by mail (see fentanyl coming via China).

The wall wont stop the opioid epidemic (see above). Opioid addiction gained traction because legal pharmaceuticals lied about the addictive nature of the newest drugs, and people got hooked so fast that they began needing a fix beyond what doctors could prescribe. The epidemic has taken a tragic turn as people don’t know what’s in the drugs they’re buying off the streets, which can include the most addictive class of opiods, including fentanyl, which can be fatal if you don’t dose precisely.

The wall wont stop anyone who overstays a visa. The majority here illegally are because they’ve overstayed their visas.

Crime by illegal aliens is at a lower rate per capita than natural born Americans. Murder, rape, and all crime categories are committed at higher rates by natural born Americans than by illegal aliens. Trump focuses on illegals because it’s easy to demonize the nonwhites than to address gun violence (which is primarily by Americans against Americans).

Trump’s boondoggle doesn’t address any of those.

See, the problem is you’re thinking about how it is. They want it ‘how it should be’. They want maximum exclusion. They want people born here to be marked with the scarlet letter of I for ‘IMMIGRANT’ (with the implicit suggestion of ‘ILLEGAL’ along with it), and marked as permanent second class, because they’re the wrong sort of person and thus not ‘American’. They want all us urban hellhole dwellers to be marked for being scary ‘cosmopolitan’ ‘globalists’ and thus tainting the supreme purity of their perfect ‘Real America’. Thus it’s alright to treat entire other populations with disdain, because in their perfect world, we wouldn’t just be second-class citizens.

It doesn’t even have to be actual ill-will. It can just be insufficient deference. It’s the same shit that carries around the scare of ‘tyranny of the majority’ whenever someone suggests anything about the Electoral College or complaints about the way the Senate is appropriated. Here’s the reason why these “negotiations” have been in totally bad faith and thus a total joke at damage control: The White House wants the DNC to put something on the table, wants them to make the first move to show they’re “serious” about making a deal. If Donny were the “dealmaker” he loves to claim he is, he’d be putting forward offers publicly to show he wants to give the DNC something in exchange for wall funding.

But he’s not, because it’s all about dominance politics for him and the need to show that he’s the one in control. So the DNC have to come to him, they have to ask him for something in exchange for that money, and the fact that they’re not has left him in a spot he absolutely hates: Not being the one in control.

I’d make that last bit something like: Not being the one to appear to be in control.

Because it is always about appearance.

If someone can find him an out from the beatings he is taking I think he would jump on it fast. Just as long as it appears he was the one that brought about the win.
