William Morgan Sheppard died on Sunday. He’s the father of Mark Sheppard, and for you Doctor Who fans, played the older Canton Everett Delaware III. He was also in the Elvira movie, Max Headroom, and a billion other things according to his IMDB page.

He played G’Sten and the Soulhunter in Babylon 5.

I thought I’ve heard this Punch Brothers piece before.

This one might be even more dynamic in sound quality.

I know there has been a lot of concern about the damage Trump has tried to do. But its good to remember that a lot of his regulatory rollbacks designed to damage the environment have been so slapdash and illegal that they have been blocked by the courts. Even the ones for which his agencies may be able to muster enough scientific evidence to support may not get through litigation before the end of his term, at which time they can be reversed by the next President.

Like a lot of things, he wins if the rest of us stop resisting.

I’ve known Dr. Jordan Peterson was a lunatic ever since I heard of him, but this is even nutzo for him.

He spent three months pondering the name of Burger King, and what the name really means in the terms of patriarchal society and the Soviet Union. (2:23)

How is it this libertarian version of Deepak Chopra has any followers?

Good article explaining why the DOD can’t build Trump’s Wall, even if he does declare and emergency.

There is funding for the DOD though, and he wants armed troops on the border (which the Posse Comitatus Act allows if there is a national emergency, something his declaration would declare).

Did you read the article?

Yes. They are talking about him ordering the military to build a wall and why that would not be legal.

As you recall, WALL was Roger Stone’s mnemonic for Trump to remember he was supposed to bash foreigners, especially from the south.

Trump isn’t going to get a wall. But what he does want is march around armed troops, which with some sort of emergency declaration he could do instantaneously. He doesn’t need to make an emergency declaration for WALL, he only needs to make an emergency declaration about “hordes of migrants carrying disease and drugs being a threat to the nation’s security.”

Assuming he has someone competent enough to write up an emergency declaration, that person will be familiar with the Anti-Deficiency Act.

I imagine his little get-together up at Camp David to figure out a way to make this legal was explained to him.

Sorry Lawrence. There is not a single Republican Senator who will stand against Trump. McConnell will continue to support Trump and the GOP Senators will fall in line. None has any courage; they are apparently in favor of Trump declaring a national emergency and acquiesce in transforming us into an autocracy. This is a nightmare that we will not escape unless Trump is removed from office quickly.

No clickbait in that tweet, no siree. The article the Washington Post links to is this:

Update: AP walks back tweet that blamed both sides for government shutdown

UPDATE 6:16 p.m.: The Associated Press has issued a second statement on the tweet: “The tweet was intended to make clear that both Trump and Democrats have failed to find common ground in their disagreements, but it could have done a better job of explaining the dynamics that have led to the shutdown. The complete AP Fact Check was robust and focused almost exclusively on Trump’s comments.”

Original story:

Political editors, beware: If ever you wish to blame both sides of this country’s political divide, please come equipped with strong evidence, documents, dates, emails, Freedom of Information Act records and even more. News consumers these days despise nothing so much as the assertion of false equivalence.

Damn! I am going to have to drive into town to mail a small Ebay package to France. It is already metered and ready to go, I just cannot get the carrier to pick it up. Today, I actually scheduled a package pickup, indicating that it would be on the porch. It was not picked up and I got an email saying that the pickup attempt had failed because the carrier could not locate the package. Ok, it was on top of a planter box on the porch, should have been more specific. Thing is, a new package was delivered at the same time. It was leaning against the same planter box and was actually in physical contract with the outgoing package the carrier failed to find.
I cannot schedule a new pickup because the USPS website is down.

Jesse Lee Peterson: ‘Unless White People Take Over, It’s Over for America’ (goes to Right Wing Watch)

Jesse Lee Peterson is an African-American conservative Christian apologist who believes all atheists and LGBT should be executed, preferably painfully. He frequently argues African-Americans are pulling down American society.

Right-wing commentator Jesse Lee Peterson appeared on a white nationalist’s podcast last week, telling the host that white people in America need to get married and “have a truckload of white children” because “unless white people take over, it’s over for America.”

Peterson has ties to Fox News host Sean Hannity and has appeared at events with right-wing media personalities including Mike Cernovich. He’s made several appearances on Fox News and he currently hosts a show on Newsmax TV.

Peterson gave an interview to white nationalist podcast host Jean-Francois Gariépy on January 4, during which the duo discussed declining birthrates among white people in the United States. Peterson has appeared on other far-right podcasts, where he’s largely sympathized with the hosts. Peterson frequently claims that racism never existed and that people of color have been undermining America since the Civil Rights era.

Or just get a long-arm trackhoe, grab the top and yank it backwards to the ground.

Reinforced piers? Three shaped charges on 18” centers would take care of that problem.

That’s the problem with a wall. It has to be monitored, in real time, with full-time personnel immediately available for a two minute response, 24 x 7 x 365.

East Germany did that with the Berlin Wall and still people managed to get through to the other side. North Koreans still manage to cross the DMZ, despite all the hazards and snipers. People who are determined to cross a border will find a way to do it.

The Mongols had an easier solution: bribe the guards manning the Great Wall. Extra easy if the guards are not being paid by their government, too.

I think *maybe* that’s right, but the fact that they are talking at all behind Mitch’s back is significant. They are scared, and may compromise on “Border Security”, forgoing actual wall funds and asking the Dems for other “Security” costs, like increased personnel, surveillance, and funds to humanely house, feed, and provide medical care to asylum seekers, which which the Dems will be glad to agree. The treatment of refugees and asylum seekers has hurt Senate R’s running for reelection in 2020 badly. It does not play at all well in purple suburbia.

The asylum question is huge for the R’s, because what we are doing is a direct contravention of International Law, of which we are signatories. tRump may laugh it off, but the Senate is more aware of the consequences down the road. They don’t want us to be branded as pariahs, as it will affect trade. Their masters don’t want that to happen.

Nope. Unconstitutional. Fails right out of the gate.

It can be taught as literature (as the Bible is important in English literature), or as part of a comparative religion class (where no religious cult is favoured over another).

All it should take to kill that bill is add an amendment to require it be part of a comparative religion class.

As for public schools, I’m not aware of any that teach that sort of class; that is usually university-level.

The City of Williamstown, Ky, continues to suffer losses in their tax revenues as attendance at Ken Ham’s/Answers in Genesis’s Creation Museum and Ark Encounter continue to have plunging attendance.

The city needs to buy a huge hook-and-ladder truck (used, $300,000) to attend to the Ark Encounter, and had to hire additional police and buy two more police cars. The city will likely have to float municipal bonds for the equipment and police, sticking taxpayers with the bill for supporting a religious organisation.

(Caution for coarse language, goes to Utah Outcasts, 6:25)
They have been tracking the declining attendance at the park, while both Ken Ham and the Republican-controlled city council claim there is no such problem. Some time ago, since Ham doesn’t release attendance figures, someone figured out they could get the attendance numbers by state freedom of information act request to the city government for the amount of safety tax assessed for attractions ($0.50 assessed per visitor).

Republicans on the city council fought giving out those numbers in court and lost. Thus, we now have regular attendance numbers for the Ark Encounter (as the other principle attraction in the city publishes its attendence numbers).

The taxpayers are also on the hook for millions of dollars in tax breaks given to Answers in Genesis to build the attraction, and the state for having to build an Interstate interchange for it.

Williamstown Isn’t Collecting Enough Safety Tax Revenue

Hmmm wonder if any Soka Gakkai members in North Dakota will file suit requiring school kids to recite daimoku and study the Lotus Sutra?

Maybe there’s a few Jodo Shinshu Buddhists that can file suit requiring school kids to say the nembutsu and study the Larger Sutra on Immeasurable Life and the Kyogoshinsho.

(BTW, Shin Buddhism is the most widely practiced branch of Buddhism in Japan…..if you meet a Japanese Buddhist, odds are they’re from the Jodo Shinshu school)

I very much down that Mitch is being kept out of the loop any more than “If asked, you know nothing about this.” Because otherwise this is the worst kept secret going on in the Senate right now.

And it probably should be. Religion is one of the prime movers in human society, for good and ill. Why shouldn’t it be taught in high school? One of the big problems all of humanity has is fear of the other. It didn’t used to be that pervasive a problem in the US, but with the rise of Conservative dogma, and especially after 9/11, it is front and center.

And I’m not not trying to minimize the latent anti-Semitism that has always existed in this country, nor the slow boil that Christian sects have had toward each other since our founding.

Ignorance breeds fear, and fear is the mind killer. What do Christians in this country *really* know about Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism (or any of the offshoots of any of these faiths), or any other of the myriad faiths that various peoples believe across the globe? What do they know about the inherent schisms within Christian faiths?

I mean, really, get a Unitarian and a Texas hard-core follower of the Church of Christ in a room and they will look at each other like aliens.

So, yeah, teach comprehensive comparative religion in high school. Teach the first class junior year on Christianity, Judaism, and Native American beliefs, their sects and their history in the US the first year. Teach other world religions, their flavors, and their arrival and impact on US history senior year.

These people want “their” Bible studied; they don’t want a comparative religion course. As Anymouse said, if the legislation were amended to require a comparative religion course, it would die immediately. I do believe there are a few secular schools that offer such courses as an elective.

re: #170 austin_blue

I don’t have a particular problem with comparative religion being taught in high school, other than the likely controversy it would cause with a lot of parents and the fact it is a difficult field to present neutrally. (I guarantee you wingnut high school teachers wouldn’t present it fairly; Kentucky has been taken to court a couple times over their recent law with teachers proselytising to students and using materials taken from Christian apologetics sites, requiring students to memorise Bible verses, &c.)

The bill proposed in North Dakota (and the current law in Kentucky) allows students to substitute social studies classes with Bible study. Such laws in practice subvert actual education standards.

Hasn’t that been challenged in court? Or is it because it’s not required that it has escaped judicial review? With this Supreme Court, who knows what the ruling would be.

I agree, and I think it’s a shame. Societies are so wrapped up in religion that teaching Social Studies without a frank discussion of religion is entirely missing the point of Social Studies and History.

The first thing any conquering army has done throughout history has been to build a temple to their victorious gods or destroy the other guy’s symbols of worship, even if it was secular, like blowing up swastika’s on public buildings in Germany or yanking down Saddam’s statue in Baghdad. It hasn’t changed in millenia.

And it’s late, I’m out, and sweet dreams to you all.

The law (Bible literacy) has been challenged more than once, on the grounds it is not being applied as written.

“Bible literacy” classes being taught in some Kentucky public schools appear to violate the Constitution by promoting Christianity and Sunday school-style “religious life lessons,” according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky.

The ACLU’s finding, contained in a letter to the state Department of Education, follows its review of how some school districts have begun offering courses under House Bill 128, a measure passed last year by the Kentucky General Assembly to include “Bible literacy” in public school curriculum.

The letter asks state education officials to develop “clear, concise and controlled guidance for Kentucky’s schoolteachers” as it works on creating guidelines for courses in Bible literacy. It said state education officials are devising such guidelines.

(Louisville Courier-Journal, January 9, 2018, more at the link).

Gov. Matt Bevin signed the bill into law in 2017.

Hence all the BS about how the Dems have to be the ones to put a “counter-offer” on the table, because once they’ve done so, then you’re no longer facing total opposition to wall funding and can go forward with the concession that wall funding will be a part of the final deal. But so long as they hold firm to there being no wall funding, then they can (rightly) argue that wall funding and other matters related to immigration reform (which Donny suddenly wants to talk again) should be addressed after the gov’t is reopened and not as a part of what are effectively hostage negotiations.

They only further the reality that these “negotiations” are a farce when Scalise jumped in front of the cameras to declare that $5.7B as (effectively) a non-negotiable part of any deal and Nancy’s symbolic offer of $1 as an “insult.” Even most of the “concessions” they’ve listed have been things that they themselves want but argue were “demands” of the DNC.

Link: Three big insights into our African origins

Here are my three insights in brief:

First, modern humans did not originate in a bottleneck after 200,000 years ago. Our origin was much deeper in time than this.

Second, our species originated in Africa from deeply structured ancestral populations. These were much more different from each other than any human populations are today. We do not know how they interacted or which gave rise to living peoples.

Third, some of these deeply divergent populations survived in Africa until recent times. During the time of human origins, “modern” humans were not alone.

Yeah, it’s no match to a saw.

These fuckers continue lying that the wall will stop people from entering the US (it wont). They’ll still figure out how to go over, under, and through, just as they’ve done over the millennia.

Trump still wants this boondoggle because it’s a white nationalist dog whistle.

Yet they lose their shit if the Quran’s tenets are so much mentioned. If you want religion in school fine, send your kid to Sunday or a religious based school but Bible Study has no place in public education.

Today, let’s turn to Genesis, where Lot is in the process of being made drunk, in order that his daughters can gang fuck him, creating Canaan and some other miscellaneous brown tribe….”

Yeah I find that berry berry interesting and then how hostile he is when he’s asked about race. They bring up his participation in the Civil Rights Movement which should be acknowledged obviously but that doesn’t tell me much about Bernie now especially given what I see Vermonters of color say about how he addresses or more appropriate doesn’t their issues. TPM (via NYT) reports that Bill Shine is already on Trump’s shit list.

White House communications director Bill Shine had an uphill battle to climb from day one of his job. President Donald Trump does not like to be handled, considers himself his best spokesman and enjoys his adversarial relationship with the press.

And according to a Wednesday New York Times report, Shine is already failing to win Trump’s approval. The mercurial President reportedly thinks Shine has delivered a lackluster performance in ginning up more positive coverage for the administration and vocally longs for the days of Hope Hicks.

I’ll cop to watching a lot of these shows, because they’re an unobtrusive background when my wife and I hang out in the evenings. And we enjoy making fun of the entitled assholes who often show up and look at a perfectly good house and reel off the usual ‘wish list’ - ‘open concept’ living area, gut the kitchen, need an island, gut the bathroom, the appliances are outdated, etc.

Maybe a lot of that is scripted, or maybe they watched shows that told them what they wanted, and they’re mindlessly repeating it. Either way, it’s fun to mock just how dumb they sound.

Fixer Upper buys lower priced homes, but they get their marks on the back end. There’s a clause in the contracts for people who get work done that they have to come in with a minimum of $35K for renovation.

And the whole ‘picking out a house’ segment in the opening is fake. Anyone on that show has already bought the house they ‘end up choosing.’

What I object to as far as the Gainses are concerned is promulgating the illusion that dropping tons of money on fixing up a house is easy and obtainable. And their thinly-veiled Christianity bothers me.

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and her suburban kitchen were also precursors of that style of white-trash comedy

I agree that the Democrats would be better off nominating one of the younger candidates for President rather than have Biden trying to explain why he voted for the Iraq War and the Defense of Marriage Act, among other things in his long career.

Indeed. I really like Biden but I think his time has passed. The best time for him to run would have been two years ago but his son’s death changed that and that’s unfortunate because I do think Biden would have and still do would make a good President but I think we need someone younger.

re: #258 NO SMOCKING GUN!

I bet Mueller has questioned Conway. Trump officials must be terrified about what Mueller may know. If he knew Manafort gave polling data to Kilimnik in Madrid even though Manafort didn’t tell him, what else does Mueller already know?

A whole hell of a lot apparently.

Last evening during Lawrence he said off the cuff that he heard someone was talking to Rudy and asked Rudy if they are afraid of Mueller’s report. Rudy supposedly said the contents were horrific.

I take that to mean Rudy knows the goose is way overcooked.

That is probably why Rudy is just throwing so much crap out about it all, trying cover for Trump for as long as they can.

I sure hope some of this is true. That report can’t come out fast enough.

Hopefully Rosenstein will be able to hang on to protect Mueller as long as he can and that report comes out in late February or early March as speculated.

Can confirm. I have a friend who sold his house in Costa Rica. Several months later the buyers were on “Beachfront Bargains” pretending to “think” about which house they were going to buy. Spoiler alert: they ended up “choosing” the house they had purchased months prior.

No one in Trumpworld is innocent. They’re all compromised or complicit or criminal. Sometimes all three.

Gotta wonder what George thinks of having his wife having potential criminal liability over her actions. That’s gonna be mighty uncomfortable.

I know that they don’t normally talk politics, and all that, but it’s one thing not to talk politics. It’s another thing entirely when you’ve got to lawyer up because you might get indicted on conspiracy against the US and other charges stemming from Mueller’s investigations.

We all enjoy George undermining his wife and his hostile take on Trump but really, how does he differ from any other anti-Trumper who helped build this monstrosity that we live in today? Unlike Bill Kristol who was anti-Trump from the beginning, George was late to the party.

We like to laugh at the formula that just about all of those shows follow. There’s always a ‘problem’ with the reno. There’s always something breaking (right before a commercial most of the time to tease you to come back). Always a ‘tough decision’ as to which house to buy.

We watch ‘Texas Flip and Move’ sometimes, and there’s always a bit where the bids stop and the flippers fear that they’re not going to get their price, but then they come back from commercial and the bidding picks up again and the flippers get their dough.

Also - anyone notice that all of the ‘competitors’ on that show are somehow all in the same family? It’s like it’s one company doing the buying, the moving and the reno, under the guise of ‘competition.’

Yeah, we probably watch way too much of that shit. :)

Goodfellas is the ultimate rise and fall gangster story and it’s relatable since any of us could be a Henry Hill since you can be any ethnic background and be an associate as he and Jimmy were but not any of us can be Don Corleone or his sons not named Tom Hagen since not all of us are of 100% Italian or if you’re really dedicated Sicilian ancestry.

For all the crap that gets thrown at the left for being elitist, I think red state rural Americans are some of the most elitist people of them all because they think they’re better than people simply because of their race, religion, and state.

And for a state (CA) that “heartlanders” suppose to be full of illegal-alien welfare slackers and crippled by “overbearing” taxes and regulations, the place still manages to maintain an economy that (if California was an independent nation) would be the fifth- or six-largest in the world. And generates 15% of the US’s GDP (with 12% of its population).

I don’t think he should run against Cornyn. If he’s going to run in a state election again, it needs to be Governor or Lt. Governor. Cornyn isn’t as hated as Cruz, and the easy charge will be that he’s just perpetually running for Senate. A loss against Cornyn will pretty much end his career.

A lot of rural folks bag on big cities because they’re simply afraid of big cities.

Hell, I’ve had people in Pennsylvania tell me they would never go to NYC, not even to visit. I know people in small towns in PA who have never ventured out of the county they were born in.

Fact is, a lot of them would get chewed up and spat out if they tried to make it in big cities, so it’s easier for them to stay where they are and snipe at those who got out into the world.

The Irish have a term for family members who leave their environs - the ‘wild goose.’ I was the wild goose in my family, and a few of my family members cannot understand why I moved away all those years ago. They probably never will.

Well, Beto dropped an F-bomb the other day, and Charlie Sykes last night on Nicole Wallace’s show got all bothered about it and said he thought that was a disqualifier.

John Heilemann sitting next too him was having a tough time keeping his eyes in his head they were rolling around so much.

Nicole noticed and said something like “John has a whole book on coarse language in politics.”

Heileman then said all he will say is: Come’on Charlie, that is a generational thing.

Of course tight-ass Sykes wasn’t having it.

Fuck ‘em.

I’m 64…and it has been a part of the boomer generation.

Trump Campaign Literally Demanded Mexico ‘Make a One-Time Payment of $5 to $10 Billion’ For Wall

However, it turns out Trump not only promised Mexico would pay directly, and not only specified the amount of the payment, he also promised the payment would arrive no later than January 23, 2017.

In a position paper that was first sent to The Washington Post, Trump said that funding the wall would be “an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year.”

You can’t make this up! From TPM:

1958 TV Show Had Conman ‘Trump’ Selling Mystical ‘Wall’ To Hysterical Townspeople
The writer and animator Alex Hirsch on Thursday flagged a quirk of television history with an odd connection to present-day politics: In 1958, CBS aired an episode of the series “Trackdown” called “The End of the World,” in which a confidence man named Trump attempts to sell a western town a “wall” — in the form of supposedly mystical parasols — to protect them from the fake threat of a meteor shower.

Oh hell no. Stay the fuck away from Mayo assholes. Fortunately, I think these people will fail in Ireland. TBH when talking about immigration, the Irish people have been some of the most humane minded people I’ve met. I talk to a lot of Irish people through my research. Most are very liberal minded i.e. can’t stand Trump, are appalled by nativism, and definitely hate the Irish slave myth used to put down African Americans.

Not really a myth, at least not concerning how Irish (and some Scottish POWs) were chattel slaves in Barbados…but slavery in Barbados does not in any way mitigate or excuse slavery in the American colonies and I utterly fail to see how American stormfront types try to whatabout that. It simply does not work. It was horrible and evil in Barbados where Irish women and girls were raped and everybody was over worked to death…and it was horrible and evil in Jamestown and Charlestown and everywhere else in America.

Good argument that Biden, like Clinton has too much baggage over decades of public service to pick over, and as the saying goes, if you’re explaining you are losing. I agree that the Democrats would be better off nominating one of the younger candidates for President rather than have Biden trying to explain why he voted for the Iraq War and the Defense of Marriage Act, among other things in his long career.

And don’t forget his role when Justice Thomas was being confirmed.
