Just as there is a difference between forms of Christians, there are differences between someone like Burke and modern “conservatism”. Some people’s hate chooses to ignore those differences because no matter how much we denounce them it’s not enough and “no one does”.

Thank you for the post column. It’s good to see how no Christian is denouncing the heretics or Trump…

Individuals are. I haven’t heard of a single Christian church organisation that denounced so-called Evangelical heresy. (See my bumper sticker comment in the previous thread, if you’re also throwing Lutherans, Greek Orthodox, Catholics, and Presbyterians as well.)

Meanwhile, Senator Butters continues to be Butters:

“It kind of fell apart,” Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, said, wearing a dejected expression. “I have never been more depressed about moving forward than I am right now. I just don’t see a pathway.”

You could, you know, pass a budget with a veto proof majority, and then… get this… even if Trump vetoes it, you could override his veto.

In a brief statement not long after, Mr. Graham declared, “It is time for President Trump to use emergency powers to fund the construction of a border wall/barrier.” He added, “I hope it works.”

Narrator: It won’t work.

He is so fucking worthless. Can we get Colbert to move back to South Carolina and run against him?

That’s what I got… Little American flags. Good to know since I got them years ago and will probably find them years from now. 😂

[Flag committee chairman hat on]
I don’t buy the flag stamps. According to the US Flag code, the flag should not be reproduced on anything intended to throw away.Used stamps are usually thrown away.
[/hat]

We still have a couple eclipse stamps left, but we mostly buy whatever commemorative stamp is available when we need stamps.

re: #315 ObserverArt

Well…he targets them all the time. So, yeah.

It’s too bad not all Lizards have access to it. They might have a little hope for some in the media.

If there wasn’t Ari Melber, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell I don’t know what I would do about all this.

Are they perfect? No. But 90% of the time they are pretty good.

Yup. No MSNBC for me, other than clips posted at YouTube. I can’t seem to get their Website to work though my ISP.

At least the restaurants in the local area know to turn off FOX when my wife and I come in. Though we are some of the poorest people in the county, we are pretty much the largest tippers.

The last time we went to the Mexican restaurant in the county seat, they had MSNBC on (thumbs up). I imagine that was quite a shock to the other patrons.

And ice laughs and laughs at 4WD

When I was coming back to Virginia Beach from Florida after a period of leave, I got on I-64 in Chesapeake during a blizzard. Radio stations were putting out calls for people with four-wheel drives to take nurses, doctors, and emergency personnel to work.

I was toodling up I-64 in my Vega, and it seemed about every 400 yards there was a four-wheel drive vehicle in the ditch or median.

Speed is important. I’d driven from Emporia to my home in Virginia Beach at about 25 mph.

I haven’t seen any evidence of a new run on guns and ammunition but I expect one as more people realize that “food stamp doomsday” is just over a month away. It’s how these people think. There could be some real disturbances, but aid recipients will not swarm zombie-like into suburbia in search of food and loot and white women. That scenario has been an article of faith with the batshit right for decades and they will act accordingly.

The world’s strongest economy left with millions without food or shelter because of one man’s megalomania and the cowardice of his party.

Save for the economy part, this happened in China in the 1960s. Mao’s agrarian revolution resulted in national famine and millions dead.

re: #68 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

I haven’t seen any evidence of a new run on guns and ammunition but I expect one as more people realize that “food stamp doomsday” is just over a month away. It’s how these people think. There could be some real disturbances, but aid recipients will not swarm zombie-like into suburbia in search of food and loot and white women. That scenario has been an article of faith with the batshit right for decades and they will act accordingly.

Everyone in my town already has at least one gun. I imagine if there’s a run on our gun shop it would only be from out-of-town hunters.

The world’s strongest economy left with millions without food or shelter because of one man’s megalomania and the cowardice of his party.

Save for the economy part, this happened in China in the 1960s. Mao’s agrarian revolution resulted in national famine and millions dead.

Economists are discussing Doomsday scenarios.

Economists are discussing Doomsday scenarios.

There are several financial gurus of various stripes saying that the economy is at a tipping point. Despite the rosy news about jobs, the markets are still volatile, housing prices are falling, indebtedness is at an all-time high relative to GDP, and the trade wars are making business skittish. All it would take to start a recession would be one really bad event … like a prolonged government shutdown.

I read that thread, too, and retweeted it. I’m not a wall expert, but everything she says makes sense. You can’t just build a 2,000 mile long wall in jiffy time and expect it to survive, maintenance-free, forever. Hell, while you’re building one section, the previous section will already need repairs. So, it will be an ongoing drain on manpower and the US Treasury (and US taxpayers).

Plus, there is no federal project that has not run over budget, AFAIK. That’s an incontrovertible fact. Anyone who says a 2,000-mile-wall/fence/beaded curtain can be built for $5.7B is an idiot.

From Vanity Fair:

“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is recovering well from her recent lung surgery, according to a statement from the Supreme Court. But that hasn’t stopped the Trump administration from preparing for the worst. A source familiar with the conversations told Politico that the White House has begun communicating with conservative activists and other allies in preparation for a confirmation fight if the liberal hero should depart the court, for whatever reason—“taking the temperature on possible short-list candidates, reaching out to key stakeholders, and just making sure that people are informed on the process.”

Given that Ginsburg is still very much alive—the 85-year-old justice’s exercise routine is intense enough to exhaust grown men decades younger—and widely expected to return to work by the end of February, the White House is treading carefully. “They’re doing it very quietly, of course, because the idea is not to be opportunistic, but just to be prepared so we aren’t caught flat-footed,” said the source.”

Narrator: Actually, the idea is to be opportunistic as fuck.

Because I read a lot of science fiction, I had a great analogy in my head of driving in that area. Imagine a dance floor where everyone is dancing, but listening to their own music. Some country, some pop, some thrash metal. They all kind of have to follow some kind of order to be on the floor, but occasionally there’s an elbow to the mouth of a slow dancer because the thrash people nearby got too worked up.

He’s putting on a show while trying to find a way he can say he tried hard.

Hopefully things like Cohen testifying and a Mueller report sighting will cause him a lot of anguish and he starts to come apart and Republicans in congress realize more and more it is time to do something to open the government and shut Trump down on the wall.

Then he can cry to wingnuts on FOX and say mean things about Nancy and Chuck.

Waiting to see if Tarrant County Republicans will dump their party vice-chair for being a Muslim:

She said the media has “vilified all of us who are opposing Shafi.”

“They say that we’re bigots, Islamophobes and white supremacists when we’re just patriots who care for our country,” she added.

— Alexandra Samuels

The “media” isn’t vilifying them, the public is. “Patriot” doesn’t mean “Ignore the I Amendment and impose a religious test.”

The GOP is a private organisation; they can exclude anyone they want from their party. I believe conservatives call exclusion “our big tent.”

The shitstorm that will follow that will be epic.

Mueller will not save this country. His job is to expose the truth, and hopefully arrest a few people. The top people, unless they did something provably criminal, will have to be held politically accountable. That is up to us.

That is why, when we get Republicans saying that the only course of action is to vote the GOP out of office, we need to let them talk.

My fantasy about this is that it gets so bad that four Rs decide to change parties and caucus with the Ds, and Schumer becomes the senate leader. You’d think there’d be at least half a dozen R senators that are feeling desperate…

Mitch McConnell is effectively the dictator of the government, and Trump is merely a figurehead at this point.

Those four might also choose to make the final leap to seize control for one-party governance.

I blame President Eisenhower. The GOP was nearly dead because it was so hated after the Great Depression it was on the brink of collapse. He ran in their party to make them more competitive, reviving the GOP.

How many times have we heard that his true base believes anything he says? I remember a video from NBC asking those Trump voters they always go back to saying even if he lies they will stick with him because he is their guy.

So he could say anything.

Key is to have a way to blame it on Chuck and Nancy.

And I got to thinking after the comment you quoted, McConnell and others might go with that and play it up.

They are all in increasingly political trouble. So maybe behind Trump they are saying something like: He’s got to go. But let’s let him piss off his backers more so that we get some political mileage out of it. They will hate the Democrats so much they will stick with us as we need them.

Trump is his own worst enemy. A smart guy would lay off making denials and accusations about the Mueller investigation, and just act like it was all beneath him to comment. Besides, his lawyers would advise shutting up as the best course of action. Instead, Donnie blurts out a never ending stream of mutually contradictory and self-incriminating commentary, which is a prosecutor’s dream come true. It’s no wonder Trump has gone through so many lawyers, and has to keep finding new ones.

Still, when it comes to how each group is handling the shutdown, congressional Republicans actually fare the worst. In the most recent HuffPost/YouGov poll, for example — conducted Jan. 4-7 — more Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the shutdown (52 percent) than they did of the way Democrats were handling it (46 percent), but 56 percent of Americans expressed disapproval of the congressional GOP’s performance.

And he is pointing out if you listen to Trump today saying to Hannity (video above)…he just declared if he doesn’t get what he wants legislatively, then this whole thing is not about a crisis, it is about him not getting legislation. And so that would be the emergency and that just doesn’t work.

He closed that bit of segment up with (paraphrased) Donald Trump the negotiator just negotiated himself right out an emergency.

NBC news showed a clip of Trump saying he never said Mexico would pay for the wall with actual money followed by a clip from a campaign rally saying Mexico might even write a check for it. So at least some progress is being made in pointing out his lies.

Not that I think it will change anyone’s mind to show that, but I think the networks have a finger up checking the wind direction and have decided it would be prudent to point out at least the most blatant conflicting statements.

Representative Leach, the guy who filed this bill. He’s yet another conservative hypocrite.

austinchronicle.com

The 84th session of the Texas Legislature, which wraps up at the end of this month, has not lacked for anti-Muslim sentiment. Anti-Sharia law House Bill 562, filed by Rep. Jeff Leach, R-Plano, passed out of committee in April (but didn’t see a House floor vote), while Rep. Molly White, R-Belton, generated national headlines in January for her unwelcoming attitude toward Muslim visitors at the Capitol (see “Rep. Molly White Not Quite Sure Who’s an American,” Jan. 29).

re: #288 HappyWarrior

Yeah that’s bs. My uncle was born the year my great grandparents emigrated. He was a natural born citizen.

No, no, no!!!11!!! It makes him a citizen, just like Wong Kim Ark, but not a natural born citizen. That’s special and apparently requires both parents to be citizens. Or maybe just your father-but just your mother? Nope. Which is funny because unless you use DNA (which the Founding Fathers presumably didn’t plan on) the mother is the only one you can be sure is an actual parent.

You’ve got to stay current on your wingnut theories.

Freepers are back to parsing “natural born citizen.” This time with regards to Kamala Harris. Just because she was born here to legal US residents doesn’t mean she’s really “natural born” apparently.

Conservatives have been banging the drum of birthright citizenship all my life. They would take mine if they could get it.

I’ll say this about our citizenship laws. It makes people into Americans. Uncle Stan was in the Army when Lindbergh was espousing Nazi rhetoric in Des Moines. Wish I could’ve known him.

“…Guandolo left the FBI in 2008, months before the story broke that he’d slept with the key witness in a corruption case against a Louisiana congressman. He then turned to peddling Islamophobic conspiracies, an obsession he’d developed as an FBI agent after 9/11, first making a name for himself in 2010 by baselessly accusing a Jordanian-American who worked for Ohio’s state police of terrorist connections. In May, he told a group of nearly 30 San Angelo cops that all Islamic leaders are “obliged to lie to [them]” and mosques are where Muslims “plan battles.” Later this month, he’s set to speak to members of the Tarrant County GOP just days before the party votes on whether to oust four members, one who’s Muslim and another who’s married to a Muslim.”

Working the Sharia Panic grift.

When we lived in Oklahoma, there was a referendum put on the state ballot which would have declared English as the state’s official language, but also included so-called anti-Sharia language in the 2008 election.

The Tulsa World the day after the referendum was certified for the ballot published their entire edition that day in Cherokee.

The referendum went down in flaming defeat.

He’s an asshole. After the shit he pulled with the public option. He shouldn’t be lecturing about what the Democratic Party is and isn’t. Plus the whole backing McCain over Obama was a douche move given Obama supported him even after he lost to Lamont which was a mistake but the Connecticut voters wanted him.

She’s good.

She *is* good. She’s open to criticism that she is learning as she goes along. And she is a master of twitter snark. Note also that she was a producer of that BU video. And a hell of a dancer. She’s got a certain charisma, and you don’t get that by being an idiot.

I look forward to her impact this Congressional session.

I mean, really, why isn’t a 70% tax on families making over $10 million a year reasonable? We have would have a graduated tax structure where all income below $10 million is taxed at a lower level.

It’s not like if you make $10,000,001 a year the government is going to reduce your income to $3 million dollars, and if you make $9,999,999, your income would be $6.3 million.

Sadly, the vast majority of Americans have no idea what graduated tax is and how it works.

If we dropped a 70% tax on all income over $10 million/year we would be in much better shape.

If we reinstituted the “Death Tax” on family wealth (with reasonable exceptions) we would be in much better shape.

Oh, and if we removed the Social Security Tax cap and required the that tax be applied to *all* income, SS would be out of the hole tomorrow.

And if we indexed Capital Gains and treated it as income, we would be out of the Medicare/Medicaid hole tomorrow.

It won’t happen, of course, but it’s an easy fix to the deficit.

When she was fact-checked by a journalistic outlet for being mistaken on figures she gave, she publicly thanked them for correcting her. She noted fact-checking is vital to hold politicians to account, and helped her in becoming a better politician.

I can’t ever remember any politician thanking a fact checker for correcting them.
