I wonder if we will look upon this era the way we looked at the 60’s. and be astonished at how powerful and creative the music was? And the 60’s had all of the restrictions of the FCC, racially segregated stations, and demands of commercial entities. Now, with YouTube?

Charles Pierce on Tulsi Gabbard:

Yeah, Sure, This Is What 2020 Needs (Goes to Esquire)

A history of Gabbard’s support for wingnuts.

Amongst other things, she’s accused Democrats for being “religious bigots” for questioning a Trump nominee from my state (who is a first class wingnut) for the federal bench here.

So the actress who played Buffy Summers had a uncle named Army that got blown up and died three times because of a cartel tunnel.

Oooooookay then.

If Gabbard hadn’t backed Sanders and trashed the DNC, they would hate her. A lot of her dirty laundry will be aired and like Assenge a lot of self fancied more progressive than thou types will be denying they liked her.

Wow. What a statement.

While we often talk about how Trump has given voice to the racists in this country, the opposition is speaking out just as loudly, and in much more creative ways.

Standing O for Mr. Clark, Jr.

Yeah….very moderate voting record (I’m seeing she’s SOMETIMES as lefty as Pelosi, but often more conservative), very lukewarm support for LGTBQ rights (after an active opposition to gay marriage) with few restorative steps to atone for that.

Tulsi is going to be one of the ones first pushed out of the airlock of the nomination. Her reactionary self has no appeal on the mainland, the fact that she’s only a Representative means she lacks the experience as well.

oops, co CL’ed when I failed to see that a new thread was already in progress.

Rainy day here in SoCal and to muddy to ride or hike. To fill my time I watched Icarus on Netflix. Well worth your time - the scenes with Putin (mostly 2015 and 2016 ) reverberate in ways that make our present situation just a notch scarier… The references to 1984 make me want to re-read the book as an adult instead of the high school student I was when I read it.
Here is a synopsis from IMDB:
Filmmaker and avid amateur cyclist Bryan Fogel decides to make a documentary on how easy it is to get away with doping in sport. He sets out to take illegal performance-enhancing substances, improve his cycling performance and show that the substances are undetectable. His task leads him to Grigory Rodchenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory. Little does Fogel realize at the time but he is about to be involved in, and a chronicler of, sport’s greatest ever doping scandal, as details are revealed of Russia’s systemic, widespread, government-sponsored doping program.

About walls and drugs:

As part of our service to bring security to the border, the Federal Police detected a tunnel ten metres long, presumably for illicit drugs.

To report securely and confidentially dial 088 or hashtag PFMovil.

The tunnel goes between Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, Arizona. There is a wall between those two cities.

You be the judge. It is the oldest wall on the border. It was installed after a battle between civilians in Sonora and the US Army in Arizona. The US Army shot a Mexican border crosser returning to Mexico, sparking the battle. (There was no border patrol then.)

I figure if you’re going to say something is not a word, you should go to the dictionary: merriam-webster.com. It’s been in use since at least 1914. Also, though, this is American English. Once two people agree on a word and it’s meaning, it’s pretty much an actual word.

Cooking with spirits is not the same as cooking with spirit albeit there is a distinct path forward from the former to the latter. Cooking with The Spirit is, I think, concerned with dishes that feature bread and fishes.

I had to sign in to share my impression of Delaney. He’s been hanging around South Carolina for about 2 years in his big presidential run. He and I took an instant dislike to each other the first time I met him when he was the speaker at our county fund-raising dinner in 2017. He was droning on to me about how domestic/financial issues are what’s important, and that bi-partisanship should be stressed more than any progressive goals. I immediately noted that Democrats were able to walk and chew gum. He was not impressed. (Nor was I with him.)

He then came to our state convention last year and for some reason sponsored a donut wall. (Don’t ask.)

I find him boring, uninspiring and quite condescending when he speaks (although he tries to present himself as an “aw shucks” regular guy.) I’d put him in whatever the lowest tier of possibilities would be.

Oh, and this is how forgettable he is. I just came across a photo of a group of us with him in center and I have no recollection of when or where it was taken—or if it’s even him in the picture or some other guy who looks like him. Yaw…zzzzzzzzzzzz.

There are several that I like, but it’s too early for me to choose—Booker, Harris, Klobuchar, Beto, Brown (he’s one of my favorites, but, like ObserverArt, I’d hate to lose a Dem senate seat in Ohio), and a few others.

Although I like Joe Biden a lot, I don’t want him to run for a few reasons. I think he’s too old; I think he/the Dems have allowed him to become a bit of a punchline as a gaffe machine, which would make for endless bullshit from the Republicans; and he’s crashed and burned badly in his earlier presidential runs. I like Warren, but don’t want her to run either.

Hate Tulsi (met her back in the day and had really creepy vibes from her even before I knew much about her) and, of course, want Bernie to just go away.

Like you, I had originally had high hopes for O’Malley in 2016 (for VP, not pres) but boy, did he go over like a lead balloon. I don’t know—I keep hoping that somebody’s who’s not firmly on the radar yet will shine through, but I’m not sure who that would be. Too bad Bakari Sellers didn’t run/win something in 2016—with his exposure on CNN and his smarts, great backstory and charm, he would have been a great veep for somebody if he had some bigger experience behind him.

Yeah we have similar favorites and non favorites.

Tulsi Gabbard has a different problem: People born in American Samoa do not get birthright citizenship.

There was a court case trying to change that, however, brought by Samoans living in Utah.

That case went against them, and the Supreme Court denied a petition to hear it.

My question about Manafort pushing for Pence to be the VP candidate on the Trump ticket is simple. Why?

And I think there can be only two answers.

1. Pence is “workable” and Manafort talked to him about what all was going on and if he wanted the big job, he would need to accept certain conditions without question.

2. Pence is such a dunderhead he could be counted on to be VP and both not be aware and not care to find out what all was going on.

I lean to the first. Pence took the job and then when elected was told how the election was won and if he knew what was good for him and mother, he would shut up or be shut up.

I keep this article originally from May 8, 2017 at the Dallas News site.

As things go on and on it too makes more sense about what is going on with some of the Republicans we always question as to what they are up to. See the bold type line in what I pulled from the article.

It is worth a read. And, I note I need to read it again too as it has been updated to include Michael Cohen’s involvement that came out when he was taken down.

DallasNews. com - How Putin’s oligarchs funneled millions into GOP campaigns

Just a piece of it:

Buried in the campaign finance reports available to the public are some troubling connections between a group of wealthy donors with ties to Russia and their political contributions to President Donald Trump and a number of top Republican leaders. And thanks to changes in campaign finance laws, the political contributions are legal. We have allowed our campaign finance laws to become a strategic threat to our country.

An example is Len Blavatnik, a dual U.S.-U.K. citizen and one of the largest donors to GOP political action committees in the 2015-16 election cycle. Blavatnik’s family emigrated to the U.S. in the late ’70s from the U.S.S.R. and he returned to Russia when the Soviet Union began to collapse in the late ’80s.

Data from the Federal Election Commission show that Blavatnik’s campaign contributions dating back to 2009-10 were fairly balanced across party lines and relatively modest for a billionaire. During that season he contributed $53,400. His contributions increased to $135,552 in 2011-12 and to $273,600 in 2013-14, still bipartisan.

In 2015-16, everything changed. Blavatnik’s political contributions soared and made a hard right turn as he pumped $6.35 million into GOP political action committees, with millions of dollars going to top Republican leaders including Sens. Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham.

In 2017, donations continued, with $41,000 going to both Republican and Democrat candidates, along with $1 million to McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund.

Note: The article does state Democrats received donations too. But it seems they got small donations compared to big ones in the critical time period. I would guess the Russians started off giving small donations to all, then in 2015/16 gave big donations to key Republican senators and smaller ones to others. Same in 2017. McConnell got a big one, some democrats small ones. I think that was done to try to look like the Oligarch in question wasn’t (wink wink) favoring anyone.

I suspect most of this is in the Mueller investigations and in due time will be revealed.

There are so many questionable pieces lying all over. Mueller hired all those specialist lawyers and investigators to inventory it all and make sense as to how it fits.

Honestly, I think it’s the former. He’s basically a power-mad hick who completely drank the Kool-Aid of “party over country” and now he’s afraid that the big bad Democrats are going to come and take away his toys.

Because it is. And as you’ve seen, it grows and grows.

Have patience. I know it is tough because we want Trump gone. But it has to be thorough, legal and secreted.

We’ve seen how the Republicans have pushed and pushed to mess with it and end it.

Yup. Watergate from the time of the break-in at the DNC until Nixon’s resignation was over three years. (And as it turned out, Nixon didn’t even need that break-in, he would have won anyway.)

This is a bunch more complicated and has a lot more players in it.

I talked with my grandmother tonight to get her pulse on the primary potential candidates. She usually prefers the established candidates, she was a strong backer of HRC both in 2008 and 2016. But she really likes Beto and Castro. Not a fan of Bernie or Tulsi. Harris and Booker she likes but isn’t sure of. Should add that she expressed she liked Biden but wants us to go younger so that tells me that Biden counting on his experience and nostalgia may be in tough for a tough awakening though obviously my grandmother is not every Dem primary voter.

Fancy Bear is Russian malware that was installed on DNC computers. Apparently, despite the fact that it was detected in June, it continued to operate on the DNC network until October. It reveals incompetence on the part of the DNC, and the timing implies that the Russians were attempting to, and may have succeeded in, stealing DNC secrets up until the eve of the election.

If you want to talk about Mitch McConnell, consider that he’s quietly a born-again believer in the worst kind of wingnut Christianity.

He’s getting a win-win-win situation where the rich get richer, secular institutions are stripped of power and money, and the poor are left desperate enough to be easier prey to institutions that want to exploit them both in body and spirit.

…and at the bottom of this, for Trumpers and for the religious right, there’s the hunger for the world’s end. Both literally, in the hope for the Rapture, but also in the idea that with enough collapse they’ll get to rebuild in a way that reflects their appetites.

Nah, Slate’s promoting the idea that if you give Trump dictatorial power for however long it takes to file an injunction, then the Senate GOP will suddenly discover their balls long enough to pass a funding bill to his desk and possibly even override a veto. Because in such a scenario he can look cool to his base and if/when the courts knock him down he can direct his anger towards them rather than Congress.

Targetpractice  Jan 12, 2019 • 6:19:36pm

There are several things that have to go right with the whole “Let him declare an emergency” plan to avoid making things worse:

- The injunctions have be filed quickly, as I doubt Donny by this point is going to waste time knowing that such injunctions will be filed the moment he makes such a declaration. Any delay means time for him to put into place shit that could have disastrous consequences.

- The injunctions have to be successful, because otherwise Donny is a dictator until the courts can rule against him.

- Again, the courts have to rule against his declaration, which is not a guarantee now that he’s had time to pack some courts with his appointees who will feel no pressure to rule against him.

- The GOP have to act upon the declaration to move funding bills forward, which is not a guarantee when you have someone like Mitch who might feel that allowing things to crawl through the courts first is the better plan. So far, Yertle remains fixed to his “I won’t bring up a bill that Trump won’t sign” position and has said nothing to suggest he’d move from it if an emergency were declared.

- Trump likely will still veto those bills on Faux’s urging, who will stick to their hardline “Keep things shutdown until we get funding!” stance and will hold Trump responsible if he backs down, so Mitch has to be ready to consider overriding that veto knowing that it will pretty much be the end of his own career.

- Finally, enough Republicans have to be ready to face the wrath of their party base to override that veto, which is (again) not guaranteed in the current environment.

At any point in all this, shit could go south and we’d be in any even worse situation than we’re in now. And the likely lesson taken away will not be “The GOP lost the shutdown and had to give up on wall funding,” but instead “Any time you’re losing a future shutdown, just declare an emergency and let the courts bail you out.”

He’s had White House staff working on trying to find a legal way to do it. In the meantime, he is using his usual bully-bluster to get Democrats to do what he wants.

Didn’t say or imply it was but I will point out that the Bush administration didn’t have anything like Operation Wetback. Bush sucked but he wasn’t a monster to immigrants.

President GW Bush was a supporter of immigration as a symbol and necessity of a strong society, up to the first five years.

After that, he went in on a coast-to-coast border fence. From a speech on television in 2006, he fell into line with Movement Conservatism:

A major new investment in border security, including doubling the Border Patrol by the end of 2008 and temporarily deploy 6000 National Guard troops
The temporary worker program, which would include a tamper-proof identification card
Stricter immigration enforcement at businesses, which would reduce exploitation and help slow demand for illegal workers
Promote assimilation by requiring immigrants to learn English
What to do with the approximately twelve million illegal immigrants in the country? [I outlined] a rational middle ground between granting an automatic path to citizenship for every illegal immigrant and a program of mass deportation.

So. I finally got home from work and could watch the Gary Clark Jr video that leads this thread. I took the NSFW warning seriously and am glad I did but I’m even more glad to have watched it. Very moving in it’s lyrics, visuals and the screaming sobbing of that SG guitar. Going to have to buy that lp when it drops and in the meantime, I need to go load “Blak and Blue” up on rhythmbox.

Thank you, Charles.

Ford: Pardoned Nixon and several cronies
Reagan: Allegedly subverted Iran peace talks, Iran-Contra scandal

The hits keep on coming (from the Moscow Times)

Central African Republic Open to Russian Military Base

Russia and the CAR signed a military deal in August 2018, paving the way for Moscow to step up training of CAR’s armed forces. Russia delivered light arms to the CAR’s security forces earlier that year and said it had deployed 175 military and civilian instructors to train them.

CAR’s defense minister Marie-Noëlle Koyara told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency in an interview Thursday that a new Russian military base in her country cannot be ruled out.

“We haven’t yet talked about developing the base specifically, but this possibility is not excluded in the [August] framework agreement,” she was quoted as saying.

We did. There were a number of alternative plans, actually, which we had to practice on each ship I was aboard.

Obviously the first would be if a ballistic missile was detected, to get as many aircraft off the deck as possible for a counter-strike (or at least preserve them).

Assuming we weren’t sunk, running the saltwater washdown system, check the ship for hot spots, damage control, decontamination, designate those who’d been overexposed to radiation to the most dangerous jobs (as it was assumed they would die anyway), that sort of thing.

There was a myth perpetuated by Buckley that his brand of conservatism was better than the John Birch Society. Trump finally exposed that as a fraud. The sad thing is, Goldwater’s utter failure seemed to help burnish that myth instead of destroying it right then and there.

As humans go, it takes awhile to finally let a hard truth sink in. Sometimes it takes years. In the meantime, the cognitive dissonance is infuriating to us because we’ve already known.

And the black flash curtains on the schoolroom windows. Then they were supposed to load us into school busses (FY, SpellCheck, “busses” is correct) and race the shockwave up to fucking Goldbar, with little tickets strung around our necks on manila twine so they could identify our bodies.

We lived three blocks away—my mom told me to just sneak away and come home….

But those blackout curtains were great for movies and filmstrips. It wasn’t until years later that I knew why we had had them. I don’t recall that they were going to take us anywhere. We would presumably just die quietly under our desks (not that it occurred to me in elementary school.)

No one is arguing that all Republicans have issues. No one is arguing that GW Bush got us in nasty wars and was Republican in his legislation and thinking. No one is arguing the Republicans have historical problems, many that you always point out.

All of what you are saying is true.

What Happy is saying is Trump is the absolute worst example of a human con man who may be compromised by Russia and who knows who else…and he became a Republican president too.

Sure the Republican crap comes along, but in the solely unique Trump package.

And that really does make him worse than all the other bad Republicans since Eisenhower.

Trump to me is fucked up by a factor of 10 or more compared to any bad Republican you bring up.

And as further proof. Look at all the people that have become never-Trumpers, independents, even new Democrats, all running from Trump and the Republican Party.

Even Republicans that supported all of what you say in past GOP presidents are sick and concerned about Trump.

I think you would have to admit that has never been done any any past Republican.

I would argue that things might have turned out differently if Goldwater hadn’t lost by an as big margin as he did. His big loss let the small group that did support him isolate and build something awful. A lot of the worst elements of American conservatism have their genesis in the aftermath or his failed campaign itself.

Could some techie tell me what this means? This whole thread is completely meaningless to me.

Data points from the

1. Fancy Bear

The Russians, like the US have multiple intelligence agencies. “Fancy Bear” is the nickname for a Russian cyber-espionage group thought to be part of the Russian military intelligence agency GRU. Mueller’s team has identified them as Units 26165 and 74455 of GRU. It has been active worldwide. Seven men, all GRU officers, were identified as members of Fancy Bear and indicted in Oct 2018 by the Special Counsel.

en.wikipedia.org

2. Quarantined

Anti-hacking software (anti-malware), when it detects malware, is supposed to disable it so the malware no longer works. This is called ‘quarantining’. This implies that some anti-malware detected some of the malware by at least May 2016.

3. X-Agent

A malware program called X-Agent was still active and talking to a GRU website as of October 2016. The malware program runs on a computer that has an operating system called ‘Linux’. (As opposed to Windows or Apple’s OS.) There used to not be many malware programs for linux, that has changed.

So basically, a Russian intelligence group installed some malware on the DNC. Some of it was detected in May 2016. But some more of it continued to talk to Russian (GRU) servers until at least October 2016. (And presumably continued to steal/upload DNC data.) And, there is always the possibility that not all of the malware was found. (This latter part is why defensive security always sucks.)

Steven McIntyre is saying that the Russian/GRU website was siezed and shutdown in July 2015. I have not followed his thread yet. But on first read, it seems to imply that the GRU website was siezed and bbeing operated by US intelligence agencies.

My first thoughts on entering this thread would be:
1. If what McIntyre is saying is true, US Intelligence knew about the DNC hack earlier.
2. Or if McIntyre is lying, he is providing desinformaztia.

I was a second-class petty officer in the Navy at the time. We got the benefit of it being shown on ship’s TV.

An aircraft carrier is sort of a sitting duck for a nuke. The ship will probably survive, the crew won’t.

I was at Ft Sill, Oklahoma at the time. My thought at the time, which I still have not answered was “If everything you are fighting for is destroyed and killed, is there a point to continue fighting.” I felt that if I were dead, it wouldn’t matter. If I were on a surviving ship, I guess that it would be a modern Odyssey.

I was truly grateful when Gorbachov surrendered rather than take the world down with the Soviet Union. I assumed that it had to do with the memory of World War 2 and the slaughter of 15% of the Soviet population. With the survivors never really recovering.

I will add this. I think you have to look at the Never Trump types as individuals not as a group. Some of them I think are what AM says upset that Trump is airing the dirty stuff aloud. I certainly think Romney fits into that category given the tone and content of his op-ed but others and trust me I am loathe to do this since her anti Obama screeds drove me nuts but I think Rubin has some serious concerns with Trump’s actual policies. Ditto Ana Navarro. We should be wary of these people and understandably so but it’s not as black and white as it’s being made out to be IMO.

re: #500 ckkatz

Following up, Assuming that McIntyre is correct… (And I have not reviewed the data he presents. So I cannot say that what he is saying true.)

He says that the GRU malware only stole DNC emails between May 19 and May 25.

This implies (he does not explicitly state it), if he is not lying, that the GRU address the detected malware was sending the DNC data too, was ‘pwned’ by US Intelligence agencies.

Then the implication is that the data either got to the GRU by other undetected malware or that the US Intelligence agencies were only monitoring and did not stop the flow of data for that week. (My assumption in the second case is that there was a administrative delay before the US realized what data had been compromised and decided to shut down the site. This is more reasonable when one assumes that the Russians were not going to weaponize it due the high cost they would pay in retaliation. And may still do so once l’affaire Trump is resolved.

A quick read of the indict, as posted by McIntyre shows that it is written to be very coy. If so, I am impressed. Again though, I have not verified anything against a trusted source.

Sometimes it’s hard not to wonder just how terrifying it could be if Trump had a level of competence around him.

That’s why it can’t be said that “the system is working” or “rule of law is working” when “the system” and “rule of law” allowed — even in a backdoor sense — for a wannabe authoritarian in Trump to be elected.

Dr. Kendzior, like almost everyone here, is far better educated than I am.

That said, she graduated from college a generation after I joined the Navy. She got her PhD in 2012. She has vast knowledge of authoritarian regimes and how they rise, and predicted Trump would be trouble when he launched his campaign.

She didn’t watch Reagan launch his campaign, or read about Watergate in the paper as it happened. She rightly compares how Trump imitates other autocrats, but Trump didn’t appear in a vacuum. He needed an electorate primed for a Trump, and the GOP has been doing that priming since before I was born.

To be fair to Dr. Kendzior, right now what’s more important is understanding Trump and his sycophants in the GOP. When that gets taken care of, there needs to be a reckoning of how they got there. The next autocrat might be competent.

Cosmopolitan did an interesting interview and biography on her.
