Rainy day here in SoCal and to muddy to ride or hike. To fill my time I watched Icarus on Netflix. Well worth your time - the scenes with Putin (mostly 2015 and 2016 ) reverberate in ways that make our present situation just a notch scarier… The references to 1984 make me want to re-read the book as an adult instead of the high school student I was when I read it.
Here is a synopsis from IMDB:
Filmmaker and avid amateur cyclist Bryan Fogel decides to make a documentary on how easy it is to get away with doping in sport. He sets out to take illegal performance-enhancing substances, improve his cycling performance and show that the substances are undetectable. His task leads him to Grigory Rodchenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory. Little does Fogel realize at the time but he is about to be involved in, and a chronicler of, sport’s greatest ever doping scandal, as details are revealed of Russia’s systemic, widespread, government-sponsored doping program.

Thanks, ‘mouse. That pic makes the “ten meter” thing a lot more visualizable. For some reason I had assumed the “border wall” - even in Nogales - was in a wider clear zone than the middle of the street where it actually is. Live and learn…..;)

I immediately noted that Democrats were able to walk and chew gum. He was not impressed. (Nor was I with him.)

He then came to our state convention last year and for some reason sponsored a donut wall. (Don’t ask.)

I find him boring, uninspiring and quite condescending when he speaks (although he tries to present himself as an “aw shucks” regular guy.) I’d put him in whatever the lowest tier of possibilities would be.

Oh, and this is how forgettable he is. I just came across a photo of a group of us with him in center and I have no recollection of when or where it was taken—or if it’s even him in the picture or some other guy who looks like him. Yaw…zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Like you, I had originally had high hopes for O’Malley in 2016 (for VP, not pres) but boy, did he go over like a lead balloon. I don’t know—I keep hoping that somebody’s who’s not firmly on the radar yet will shine through, but I’m not sure who that would be. Too bad Bakari Sellers didn’t run/win something in 2016—with his exposure on CNN and his smarts, great backstory and charm, he would have been a great veep for somebody if he had some bigger experience behind him.

My question about Manafort pushing for Pence to be the VP candidate on the Trump ticket is simple. Why?

And I think there can be only two answers.

1. Pence is “workable” and Manafort talked to him about what all was going on and if he wanted the big job, he would need to accept certain conditions without question.

2. Pence is such a dunderhead he could be counted on to be VP and both not be aware and not care to find out what all was going on.

I lean to the first. Pence took the job and then when elected was told how the election was won and if he knew what was good for him and mother, he would shut up or be shut up.

Buried in the campaign finance reports available to the public are some troubling connections between a group of wealthy donors with ties to Russia and their political contributions to President Donald Trump and a number of top Republican leaders. And thanks to changes in campaign finance laws, the political contributions are legal. We have allowed our campaign finance laws to become a strategic threat to our country.

An example is Len Blavatnik, a dual U.S.-U.K. citizen and one of the largest donors to GOP political action committees in the 2015-16 election cycle. Blavatnik’s family emigrated to the U.S. in the late ’70s from the U.S.S.R. and he returned to Russia when the Soviet Union began to collapse in the late ’80s.

Data from the Federal Election Commission show that Blavatnik’s campaign contributions dating back to 2009-10 were fairly balanced across party lines and relatively modest for a billionaire. During that season he contributed $53,400. His contributions increased to $135,552 in 2011-12 and to $273,600 in 2013-14, still bipartisan.

In 2015-16, everything changed. Blavatnik’s political contributions soared and made a hard right turn as he pumped $6.35 million into GOP political action committees, with millions of dollars going to top Republican leaders including Sens. Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham.

In 2017, donations continued, with $41,000 going to both Republican and Democrat candidates, along with $1 million to McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund.

Note: The article does state Democrats received donations too. But it seems they got small donations compared to big ones in the critical time period. I would guess the Russians started off giving small donations to all, then in 2015/16 gave big donations to key Republican senators and smaller ones to others. Same in 2017. McConnell got a big one, some democrats small ones. I think that was done to try to look like the Oligarch in question wasn’t (wink wink) favoring anyone.

I suspect most of this is in the Mueller investigations and in due time will be revealed.

There are so many questionable pieces lying all over. Mueller hired all those specialist lawyers and investigators to inventory it all and make sense as to how it fits.

I talked with my grandmother tonight to get her pulse on the primary potential candidates. She usually prefers the established candidates, she was a strong backer of HRC both in 2008 and 2016. But she really likes Beto and Castro. Not a fan of Bernie or Tulsi. Harris and Booker she likes but isn’t sure of. Should add that she expressed she liked Biden but wants us to go younger so that tells me that Biden counting on his experience and nostalgia may be in tough for a tough awakening though obviously my grandmother is not every Dem primary voter.

Fancy Bear is Russian malware that was installed on DNC computers. Apparently, despite the fact that it was detected in June, it continued to operate on the DNC network until October. It reveals incompetence on the part of the DNC, and the timing implies that the Russians were attempting to, and may have succeeded in, stealing DNC secrets up until the eve of the election.

There are several things that have to go right with the whole “Let him declare an emergency” plan to avoid making things worse:

- The injunctions have be filed quickly, as I doubt Donny by this point is going to waste time knowing that such injunctions will be filed the moment he makes such a declaration. Any delay means time for him to put into place shit that could have disastrous consequences.

- The injunctions have to be successful, because otherwise Donny is a dictator until the courts can rule against him.

- Again, the courts have to rule against his declaration, which is not a guarantee now that he’s had time to pack some courts with his appointees who will feel no pressure to rule against him.

- The GOP have to act upon the declaration to move funding bills forward, which is not a guarantee when you have someone like Mitch who might feel that allowing things to crawl through the courts first is the better plan. So far, Yertle remains fixed to his “I won’t bring up a bill that Trump won’t sign” position and has said nothing to suggest he’d move from it if an emergency were declared.

- Trump likely will still veto those bills on Faux’s urging, who will stick to their hardline “Keep things shutdown until we get funding!” stance and will hold Trump responsible if he backs down, so Mitch has to be ready to consider overriding that veto knowing that it will pretty much be the end of his own career.

- Finally, enough Republicans have to be ready to face the wrath of their party base to override that veto, which is (again) not guaranteed in the current environment.

At any point in all this, shit could go south and we’d be in any even worse situation than we’re in now. And the likely lesson taken away will not be “The GOP lost the shutdown and had to give up on wall funding,” but instead “Any time you’re losing a future shutdown, just declare an emergency and let the courts bail you out.”

Again did I say he was a good or even okay President? I have said that Trump is unique because of his contempt for our very system of government. Bush was awful. No one is arguing that all Republicans have issues. No one is arguing that GW Bush got us in nasty wars and was Republican in his legislation and thinking. No one is arguing the Republicans have historical problems, many that you always point out.

There was a myth perpetuated by Buckley that his brand of conservatism was better than the John Birch Society. Trump finally exposed that as a fraud. The sad thing is, Goldwater’s utter failure seemed to help burnish that myth instead of destroying it right then and there.

As humans go, it takes awhile to finally let a hard truth sink in. Sometimes it takes years. In the meantime, the cognitive dissonance is infuriating to us because we’ve already known.

I would argue that things might have turned out differently if Goldwater hadn’t lost by an as big margin as he did. His big loss let the small group that did support him isolate and build something awful. A lot of the worst elements of American conservatism have their genesis in the aftermath or his failed campaign itself.

No one is arguing that all Republicans have issues. No one is arguing that GW Bush got us in nasty wars and was Republican in his legislation and thinking. No one is arguing the Republicans have historical problems, many that you always point out.

What Happy is saying is Trump is the absolute worst example of a human con man who may be compromised by Russia and who knows who else…and he became a Republican president too.

1. Fancy Bear

The Russians, like the US have multiple intelligence agencies. “Fancy Bear” is the nickname for a Russian cyber-espionage group thought to be part of the Russian military intelligence agency GRU. Mueller’s team has identified them as Units 26165 and 74455 of GRU. It has been active worldwide. Seven men, all GRU officers, were identified as members of Fancy Bear and indicted in Oct 2018 by the Special Counsel.

2. Quarantined

Anti-hacking software (anti-malware), when it detects malware, is supposed to disable it so the malware no longer works. This is called ‘quarantining’. This implies that some anti-malware detected some of the malware by at least May 2016.

3. X-Agent

A malware program called X-Agent was still active and talking to a GRU website as of October 2016. The malware program runs on a computer that has an operating system called ‘Linux’. (As opposed to Windows or Apple’s OS.) There used to not be many malware programs for linux, that has changed.

So basically, a Russian intelligence group installed some malware on the DNC. Some of it was detected in May 2016. But some more of it continued to talk to Russian (GRU) servers until at least October 2016. (And presumably continued to steal/upload DNC data.) And, there is always the possibility that not all of the malware was found. (This latter part is why defensive security always sucks.)

Steven McIntyre is saying that the Russian/GRU website was siezed and shutdown in July 2015. I have not followed his thread yet. But on first read, it seems to imply that the GRU website was siezed and bbeing operated by US intelligence agencies.

My first thoughts on entering this thread would be:
1. If what McIntyre is saying is true, US Intelligence knew about the DNC hack earlier.
2. Or if McIntyre is lying, he is providing desinformaztia.

I seem to remember a whole bunch of people who claimed they never voted for W. The party even shunned him.

Republicans also went after Nixon (when it was obvious he was in trouble).

An aircraft carrier is sort of a sitting duck for a nuke. The ship will probably survive, the crew won’t.

I was at Ft Sill, Oklahoma at the time. I will add this. I think you have to look at the Never Trump types as individuals not as a group. Some of them I think are what AM says upset that Trump is airing the dirty stuff aloud. I certainly think Romney fits into that category given the tone and content of his op-ed but others and trust me I am loathe to do this since her anti Obama screeds drove me nuts but I think Rubin has some serious concerns with Trump’s actual policies. Ditto Ana Navarro. We should be wary of these people and understandably so but it’s not as black and white as it’s being made out to be IMO.

Basically I look for a few things when looking at conservatives who claim to be appalled by Trump. Do they go out of their way to make excuses for why Trump was nominated and then elected? Do they try to act like their ideology had no part in why Trump was viable? Do they and this is an important one to me hold the Congressional GOP leaders accountable for appeasing and going along with Trump’s whims? That’s what I look at.

I mean if Trump was no different from his predecessors, we wouldn’t be in the rut we are. As I said, the others are mere pimples on our face to Trump’s hemmoroid on the collective asshole. Trump being uniquely awful doesn’t change that his Republican predecessors have especially in my life been merely subpar (HW Bush) to bad (Bush/Reagan) . It’s as you say OA, it’s the type of person Trump is. It’s the type of person that has rallies where he encourages his supporters to rough up people. The Bushes and Reagan? Yeah assholes more than not especially Ronnie IMO but I can’t imagine Ronnie encouraging that shit at his rallies and that IMO does make him stand out from his predecessors.

Yeah you do, thanks. Like as bad as Bush was, I can’t imagine him going out of his way to praise tyrants who were trying to subvert our allies. Not that he wasn’t a dick to allies too. The Bush administration’s attitude to France, Germany, and the other countries opposed to Iraq was unforgivable but as I know you agree Trump stands out to me when he flat out says stuff like he considers the EU/NATO a bigger threat to us than Russia and the damn asshole knows that Russia tries to subvert our elections.

If you agree with someone like Sarah Kendzior, then you really do agree with Happy and me.

She herself warns of just Trump and puts him singularly in comparison to autocrats. She never really compares to any past bad presidents. I think her warnings are unique like Trump.

Following up, Assuming that McIntyre is correct… (And I have not reviewed the data he presents. So I cannot say that what he is saying true.)

He says that the GRU malware only stole DNC emails between May 19 and May 25.

This implies (he does not explicitly state it), if he is not lying, that the GRU address the detected malware was sending the DNC data too, was ‘pwned’ by US Intelligence agencies.

Then the implication is that the data either got to the GRU by other undetected malware or that the US Intelligence agencies were only monitoring and did not stop the flow of data for that week. (My assumption in the second case is that there was a administrative delay before the US realized what data had been compromised and decided to shut down the site. This is more reasonable when one assumes that the Russians were not going to weaponize it due the high cost they would pay in retaliation. And may still do so once l’affaire Trump is resolved.

A quick read of the indict, as posted by McIntyre shows that it is written to be very coy. If so, I am impressed. Again though, I have not verified anything against a trusted source.

That’s why it can’t be said that “the system is working” or “rule of law is working” when “the system” and “rule of law” allowed — even in a backdoor sense — for a wannabe authoritarian in Trump to be elected.

Both are helping bring him down, sure, but this needs to be addressed. Changes and reforms are imperative once this shakes out.

Dr. Kendzior, like almost everyone here, is far better educated than I am.

That said, she graduated from college a generation after I joined the Navy. She got her PhD in 2012. She has vast knowledge of authoritarian regimes and how they rise, and predicted Trump would be trouble when he launched his campaign.

She didn’t watch Reagan launch his campaign, or read about Watergate in the paper as it happened. She rightly compares how Trump imitates other autocrats, but Trump didn’t appear in a vacuum. He needed an electorate primed for a Trump, and the GOP has been doing that priming since before I was born.

To be fair to Dr. Kendzior, right now what’s more important is understanding Trump and his sycophants in the GOP. When that gets taken care of, there needs to be a reckoning of how they got there. The next autocrat might be competent.
