An Exceptional Tiny Desk Concert: H.E.R.

Dec. 12, 2018 | Bobby Carter — It’s been said that you only get one chance to make a first impression. In H.E.R.’s case, you get two. She stunned us as a special guest for Daniel Ceasar’s Tiny Desk concert earlier this year, in an appearance that showcased her vocal mastery. That earned her an invite to play again, front-and-center. She attacked her second go ‘round with more fervor than the first, highlighting her skills as a multi-instrumentalist, maneuvering between acoustic and electric guitars, then the Fender Rhodes.

While H.E.R. stands for “Having Everything Revealed,” she’s an artist who’s built her reputation on a certain degree of anonymity. The cover art for her debut, 2016 EP, H.E.R. Volume 1, shows a woman’s silhouette over a blue backdrop. Her visuals never provide the audience a clear shot of her face and her signature accessory for every outfit is a pair of large, dark sunglasses.

As fans collectively squinted to get a better view, she delivered more projects. Another EP, H.E.R. Vol 2, came in 2017, followed months later by H.E.R. which combined songs from both volumes with a handful of new songs. The latter earned her five nominations for 2019’s Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year and Best New Artist Of The Year. She was born Gabriella Wilson to a Filipino mother and Black father. She first attracted the spotlight as a child prodigy, eventually signing a record contract when she was 14-years old. At 21, she’s yet to release her debut LP.

There were two standout moments during her Tiny Desk set. One came at the midway point of her biggest hit so far, “Focus.” When the instruments dropped out and background vocalists Ajanee Hambrick and Malik Spence chimed in with their lush harmonies, the audience melted. The second came when her focus was interrupted by a charming and sincere expression of gratitude for the Tiny Desk platform. For a split second it appears as though she’s about to remove those sunglasses. “Not saying that I’m your favorite artist, but maybe me being here today says a lot.”

Set List
“Going” (Interlude)
“Feel A Way”
“Hard Place”
“Focus”

Although it turns out that the column didn’t just run in vdare. Pat Buchanan apparently still has a syndicated newspaper column, why any self-respecting paper would want to run it is beyond me.

So before I go upstairs and scream into my pillow for half an hour about the state of the world as I try to fall asleep… lemme get this straight:

1) Top GOP leaders had to go on the Sunday gasbag shows this morning to say that Steve King’s “what’s wrong with white supremacy?” garbage was unacceptable (albeit not SO unacceptable that they actually have to take any real action about it)…

and

2) Within 10 hours, their president and the nominal leader of whatever’s left of their party was on Twitter spewing horribly racist stereotypes at a potential challenger in 2020, then retweeting Pat Fucking Buchanan from V Fucking Dare?

And this is normal now, right?

I hate to break it to you but it’s kind of a stereotypical cop out to dismiss Asian innovation, the harsh truth is that America just wasn’t that creative to begin with.

The threat at the border is when Trump goes to visit it.

Me, being a bit of a hermit and not watching regular television (I only view what I want, on demand), I missed this bit of diversion from ABC:

Truth & Lies: Monica and Bill

Journalists look into the other side of Bill Clinton; Bill Clinton’s and Monica Lewinsky’s worlds overlap

America is being pushed into crisis by malevolent Donald Trump, and ABC has to run a show on Bill Clinton’s adultery just because.

re: #15 Scout

Strictly speaking, it doesn’t. I mean, listen, like you I grew up in the Northwest. I went to elementary school in Federal Way, moved to Redmond and graduated high school from RHS and got my B.A. in Comp Lit from the UW. So when I tell you that Rainier and Olympia are dead and their corpses have been turned into modern corporate zombies you’ll understand the cultural significance.

In the late 1990s, the company was sold to Stroh’s, then to Pabst Brewing Company, though Miller contract brews most of Pabst’s beers. The brewery was closed by Pabst in 1999 and sold.

In 1977 the brewery was sold to G. Heileman Brewing Company, and passed through several more hands before finally winding up owned by Pabst, which closed it in 1999. The Rainier brand was sold to General Brewing Company, which moved production to the Olympia brewery in nearby Tumwater, Washington. The Olympia Brewing Company closed in 2003. Rainier Beer is now brewed under contract in Irwindale, California.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Trump’s boxed in a corner because he doesn’t know how to negotiate and he’s left with calling Democrats names and trying to blame everyone but himself for the shutdown he wanted.

Trump continues lying all throughout, because that’s what he does.

But let’s not kid ourselves. The wall and the shutdown are diversions from the torrent of news coming out about how Trump is a Russian potted plant. He’s trying to deny and deflect from bad news with other bad news. Don’t let that happen.

McConnell and Trump and the GOP are responsible for the shutdown - a shutdown Trump wanted, and McConnell is now giving cover for. McConnell skipped town this weekend rather than allow a vote on a clean CR that would easily pass. Why would he refuse to hold the vote? Easy. A vote would embarrass Trump because he’d have to veto the bill to reopen government. And there’s the possibility that they could get enough votes to override the veto, which would be rolling an 18 wheeler back and forth over Trump’s final 2 years.

McConnell is more concerned about propping up Trump than doing his job of legislating and governing. It’s about sabotaging functioning government. That’s the common shared goal.

So as the news continues dropping more confirmation of the Russia-Trump connections, which we had glimpses of in 2015/2016, Trump and the GOP continue trying to deflect and project.

Do not let them - and hold the media accountable as well. Multitask - because that’s what we have to do to keep up with the stream of steaming skunk stew coming from Trumpworld.

There were enough of them for King to withstand a re-election challenge that was only a campaign due to the fact King didn’t even run a campaign at all.

What AOC is getting at is the fact, the sorry fact, that many people including the op-ed writer still believe that GOP can be saved from itself. Either it’s denial, or willful ignorance, or both, but the notion that this vein of white supremacism in the GOP can still be contained is too little, too late.

It doesn’t have to be rural Iowa, it applies to Vinton County, Ohio or any rural county in Mississippi. If they were offered a candidate like King, they’d vote for him because he’s not a Democrat. See Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Donny gives his State of the Onion on January 29 (I thought it was earlier than that for some reason??). Maybe that’s his last shot at saving this precious wall of his?

If the GOP senate caves beforehand, there wouldn’t be enough popcorn and schadenfreude for that disaster in the making.

I get that strategy. When we had a functional US Senate and US House that wasn’t dominated by the my-way-or-the-highway GOP, leadership could negotiate and have space to work out deals that satisfied enough on both sides that they could keep government operating.

The GOP has gone to a full metal obstructionist government, and some were thinking that they could roll Schumer (moreso than Pelosi) into cutting a deal since that’s what Schumer has been accustomed to doing for years - it’s a process/results oriented approach where negotiating a deal means everyone gets something but no one walks away empty handed.

They misjudged the situation since not even the GOP wants this nonsense.

Oh, and Trump’s FY 2019 ask for the wall is billions less than what he is publicly demanding (as if he can keep straight any of the asks). They try to fudge the numbers there too.

The GOP game plan seems to have been “Put pressure on Schumer and he’ll crack like an egg.” Or, if that failed, put pressure on Senate Dems by suggesting that if they didn’t go along with “border security” then it would hurt them in 2020. But Chuck has stood fast and the Dems aren’t budging which has left the GOP with no Plan C.

It’ll be a week tomorrow since Donny gave his prime-time address, which Jared made the rounds on Capital Hill assuring shaky Repubs would change the whole balance of the shutdown. I wish to subscribe to your newsletter and what not, but this would require McConnell allowing a vote on a bill that not only requires a shitload of GOPers to make it veto proof; it would essentially be a huge admission of failure. I just don’t see this happening.

Yep, in the past they would have worked a half-assed “Move this shit down the road” deal that would involve empty promises and fuzzy math to get things reopened. Whip enough votes to get it over the line and then let the rest vote what would keep the plebes back home happy. Then go to the press and assure folks that they weren’t abandoning the “fight,” they were just getting the gov’t reopened so they could deprive the DNC of the “hostages” they’d taken.

Active shooter situation at a UPS warehouse in NJ. Situation ongoing.

A Gloucester County spokeswoman confirmed an active shooter in a UPS warehouse in Logan Township, Gloucester County. No details have been released about injuries, but officials stressed that the ongoing incident was contained to the warehouse on Birchcreek Road and police have roads blocked off in the area. The warehouse is located in an industrial park.

A spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office said “the situation is contained.”

“We have an active incident in place,” chief of staff Tom Gilbert said by phone. “Tactical elements were deployed.”

Thirty-two employees from the UPS warehouse have been relocated to the nearby Holiday Inn.

We have more gun violence than every other OECD country out there, but Trump and GOP don’t consider it a national emergency unless the shooter isn’t white and isn’t an American citizen. Only then do they dog whistle that we need action against minorities and undocumented persons.

But none of these GOPers are going to touch guns. The sales must continue.

The man’s ex-girlfriend is one of the people being held captive, according to the official. There are no immediate reports of anyone being injured.

Well, even though I think a lot of the whooptedo over AOC is a bit overblown, if your thesis is true, it’s a truly impressive feat for a freshman Representative: moving a (seemingly fixed) Overton Window way to the left all by her lonesome…

She’s done that. CNBC’s John Harwood made exactly that point - no one was even talking about marginal tax rates until she tweeted about them, and the subsequent right-wing freakout about the tweet moved it into the media.

Maybe she’s operating on instinct, but if she is her instincts are damned good.

I’ve been meaning to mention this for a few days now - a friend of mine got me a Bokksu sampler box for Christmas, and my wife and I have been sampling a pretty nice variety of Japanese snacks.

Everything has been really good and some of it is pretty unusual. The one thing neither of us would even try - salmon cookies. Nope, that’s just wrong. Fed those to the pets, and they enjoyed them.

I had a subscription to a similar service a year or so ago, Japan Crate. I definitely got some interesting stuff, but I realized after a while that I had mainly subscribed in hopes of stuff like Japanese Kit Kats, and the price wasn’t worth what I realized were boxes of snacks I lad been hording. They’re floating a couple of things then:

1) he’s too dumb/addled to have conspired with the Russians; or
2) releasing the report would be far more damaging to the US than keeping it under wraps.

The report, which is likely to show that Trumpworld was up to its eyeballs in Russia complicity, is going to be a bombshell alright. I’m also thinking that it might implicate more than just those in the admin, but some of those in Congress - whether from the NRA angle, or the Trumpworld angle. Both are part of the larger effort for Russia to destabilize the American political system and use the GOP’s power-hungry demagogues to further their own agenda by electing a know nothing who gives Russia what it wants on the international stage, and everything happening domestically is a bonus for Putin.

David French continues the trend of displacing onto Trump the misdeeds and malformations that have been the dominant position in US conservatism for decades.

The Unmanning of Conservatism

He’s a bully, and his fans love him for it.

Yes, let’s pretend this is new as opposed to an ongoing part of the consumer culture of conservatism since Nixon.

Of all the disorienting and disturbing cultural effects of Trump’s ascension to the presidency, few are as disorienting and disturbing as the redefinition of ideal masculinity in the hearts of many of his biggest fans. The sheepdog has been replaced by the wolf.

And here is the real bullshit: the “sheep, sheepdog, wolf” invocation.

If you want to understand why conservative masculinity leans on cruelty, is fragile as a digestive biscuit, and attracts deep, violent misogyny, well…there you go.

When used by Lev Grossman in “On Killing” the metaphor refers to men trained to be combatants and thus acclimating to tasks abhorrent to civilians: this is necessary but not heroic, and potentially tragic since the serviceman is set apart, even injured, by their exercise of violence.

What is the metaphor to David French? Conservative men are sheepdogs? Who are the sheep? Everyone else? Built into this usage is a unexamined conceit that conservative positions protect people, and that the sheep/sheepdog distinction means that conservative policy is a select group making choices to govern a majority. Given how often conservative leaders serve up the notion that non-whites and the “wrong” kind of women are fundamentally unserious—the vaunted Reagan being especially skilled at hand-wave dismissals—this idea that they are tending a flock is more about power and contempt than care.

Performative cruelty is part of the culture such that there’s an entire genre of shows, and performers competing for eyes, and they have consistently punched down and used exactly the kind of language French is attributing to Trump: nicknames, accusing men of being feminine, cheap shots. It is a multi-billion dollar business. Aggression against ones putative charges is embroidered into the conservative understanding of “family” and parenting; that masculinity specifically entails the domination of wife and kids, to teach them proper order, arises over and over in their religious values.

It’s not just a No True Scotsman—everyone’s a good sheepdog until they’re a wolf—it’s a continuing resolution to ignore bad behavior in the in-group, until such time as it can’t be concealed…at which point it’s denied that the “wolf” was ever part of the community of putative “sheepdogs.” Nothing will change as long as this kind of shallowness—the invocation of a heroic manly ethos, with no reflection about how that system has and is operating, how it fails—is presented as critique.

French refuses to see that American conservatism’s traits quite naturally led to someone like Trump. And tbh not really fond of him talking about bullying given how he treats his wife.

The ways that Never Trumpers explain Trump demonstrate exactly how Trump happened, and why there’s going to be another Trump in just a few years.

As I linked earlier this morning, the opinion piece in the Guardian by the Isle of Wight’s Conservative MP getting all up and bothered about Parliament elites overthrowing democracy… as we all know, it’s the Brexiteers who are the ones trying to undo representative democracy.

Brexit passed by a slim margin. Polls show that it would not pass today.

That right there is the one and only reason the Brexiteers are so petrified at the thought of a second referendum on Brexit.

They know this time around, it’ll lose. This is their one and only shot at getting the UK out of the EU, and they damn well know it.

What they’re practicing isn’t even conservatism.

It’s just the invocation of the past to justify whatever is wanted in the present. It’s magical thinking where conjuring with tradition—invoking the vague notion of “the family,” “the free market,” or “real men”—substitutes for opening up those concepts and considering how they have subjective aspects, and how they fail.

Indeed, what we see over and over is “can’t fail, can only be failed.”

This defines them such that they have no ideology, just symbols to rally around even as what is symbolized is changed, over and over.

The “crisis” that wingnuts see and Trump is supposedly going to protect them from is the one he has totally failed over the past two years to end: The influx of “those people” into this country that is threatening the future of the white majority. He’s pushing a wall because everything he’s tried, from “zero tolerance,” to family separations, to bans, to border closures, and military deployments have utterly failed to solve the “crisis.” So the last thing has to offer is a Big Dig-style construction project that will drag on for years, cost tens of billions more than budgeted, and accomplish exactly dick.

What I think a lot of them believe is that if they can remove the racism, they can just become the conservative party. The problem is that, in their current formulation, they can’t remove the racism because it currently runs the party. The only reason the Democrats were able to was that people like LBJ ended up running the party, and while no one is perfect, he listened to people like MLK.

They’ve had to welcome people into the “Big Tent” time and time again over the years in order to remain a viable party, thinking those they drove out were too small on their own to be a danger to the party’s future. Whether it was appealing to racists, to evangelicals, to bigots, to nationalists, or isolationists, they found some way to sell the party’s doctrine as the cure for what ailed them.

Now they’re realizing that the people they kicked out from the tent have not only banded together, but their numbers have grown so large that they pose an existential threat to the future of modern conservatism. By contrast, the people they brought into the tent are dying out because their own beliefs are outdated, are increasingly unpopular, and becoming more archaic with each passing year. So that all they have left is to do what they do now: Screaming at the opposition “YOU USED TO AGREE WITH US!”

Faux brings on sheriff of Pima Ct, AZ to do the usual “Tell us all about how horrible things are on the border” business, before asking as the last question if he thinks a barrier would help in the long stretches where none exist right now besides natural ones. Quickly shuffle him off when he starts pointing out all the flaws in such an approach, namely said natural barriers, the fact that artificial barriers don’t do much to impede border crossings if not properly maintained, and that we need a “blended approach” of barriers with sensors/drones.

They have always reminded me of the fight between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks.

In his notes at the time Lenin called his group ‘hards’ and his opponents ‘softs’. When a delegate lamented that uncomradely attitudes were spoiling the congress, Lenin sharply replied that, on the contrary, he relished a good open fight instead of endless inconclusive talk. His attitude was attacked as elitist and tyrannical. The youthful Trotsky, now and for years to come a Menshevik, reportedly told Lenin at one point, ‘That’s dictatorship you’re advocating,’ to which Lenin replied, ‘There is no other way.’

There is still a year before it all unravels. After 30 March, there is still until 2020 as the EU and the UK operate on the old relationship.

The “transition period” is still a period, even if the transition turns out to be a step function.

No.

If the withdrawal deal is not accepted by parliament there is no transition period.

Now ask why… that’s what media outlets need to be investigating the hell out of right now.

In an ordinary situation where a leader is toxic and poses an existential threat to the party, let alone the nation, you’d force a resignation but there’s no effort here to do that.

So what’s going on? The base loves Trump and his reactionary know nothing bigotry hate, and policies that further the hate. The leaders that would move him to resign are keyed to this, so they wont act.

And by the time it’s clear that they have to act, it’ll be too late to have an alternative.

Not that I mind that outcome - the GOP is irredeemable.

They were probably told by those pollsters that Trump’s base is starting to fall apart over this. The erosion of support with the non-college crowd is not insignificant. Add to that the ever-present execution of the Law of Diminishing Returns as Donny keeps saying more ridiculous and inflammatory rhetoric, giving speeches that immediately fall flat, making extra-constitutional threats and not following through on any of them… and it’s not helping.

And they’re still dug in firmly with their heads in the sand. Poll numbers be damned. The threat of losing multiple senators next November be damned.

I think we’re at the point where they are just playing out the string and not doing anything because they know the inevitable is coming. It’s a bizarre hill for them to die on, but I guess that’s the choice they’ve all made.

Never mind the media execs, look at who owns them. All of the major broadcast networks and CNN are owned by companies with film studios and production units that do business oversees, especially in China. The NYT has had a sister paper in Paris for decades. And the WaPo is co-managed with one of the largest companies in the world, Amazon.

With their overall footprints it’s no surprise that they’d withhold certain things. And I’m not even counting Les Moonves’ obvious boasts or Rupert Murdoch running a disinformation powerhouse on cable.

just finished the drive home

Sunday lizards know i hit this streak and ran 78 days up to the day before the dopey. Those runs included 30+ mile weekends with 20+ mile sundays.
Chasing these kinds of meaningless ‘records’ dont usually interest me and forcing them is bad and can be counterproductive.

and of course the dopey 4 days was more or less ‘guaranteed’

Nevertheless

It was ‘important’ to see if i could run at all the day after a marathon, and especially a dopey one. (dont ask me why. it’s all an obsession)
I slightly injured one of my toes yesterday and prudence would have said to take the day or a couple. And normally i would have listened.

Nevertheless

I ran around 30 minutes. Oh yes, slowly and easily.
It wasn’t particularly ‘graceful’. a fair bit achy and yet not all that difficult.

Now i could even give up tomorrow and be happy. though we’ll see wont we? After all it would be day 84.

Despite all things going on in the industry, I still consider myself a wrestling fan. That fact makes me understand all too well how utterly deranged the McMahon family can be, not even counting their on-screen characters. That said, there are some understatedly amazing folks employed by the WWE. Sami Zayn, for one, has used his time and fame to help rally for Syrian refugees (being a Canadian of Syrian descent).

Mustafa Ali is another, who not only has managed to get accepted by the WWE fanbase despite his initial start as a bitter foreign heel (and lets face it, overtly Muslim wrestlers are always a hard sell in this dumb country), but has been fairly open about certain experiences. He details how and why he decided to resign as a police officer in Chicago during an interview with former ring announcer Lilian Garcia (Ignore the comments. It IS Reddit, after all). Bullet points:

* He was aware how people panic over traffic stops and warrants
* He went through outstanding warrants and used the relevant emergency contacts
* He managed to encourage a lot of parents to convince their kids to come in to process the traffic warrants rather than blindside them.
* Despite managing to process all these warrants without issue, he got reprimanded for not going on the street and ‘rounding them up’.

Considering the shit about police violence and the actual, official scoring of de-escalation tactics by depts these days, him walking out on principle is a damn thing.
