Senior FBI Officials Discussed Whether Trump Was Acting on Orders From the Kremlin

Politics • Views: 23,755

Remember immediately after Trump fired James Comey, he said in several speeches that FBI officials and agents approved of it, and their morale was excellent, tremendous, the best morale ever in history?

Yeah, well, no. In the real world, after Trump’s impulsive act, the FBI opened investigations into him for obstruction of justice, and now we learn that senior officials held meetings to discuss whether Trump was following orders from Russia.

In the chaotic aftermath at the FBI following Director James Comey’s firing, a half-dozen senior FBI officials huddled to set in motion the momentous move to open an investigation into President Donald Trump that included trying to understand why he was acting in ways that seemed to benefit Russia.

[…]

James Baker, then-FBI general counsel, said the FBI officials were contemplating with regard to Russia whether Trump was “acting at the behest of and somehow following directions, somehow executing their will.”

James Baker, then-FBI general counsel, said the FBI officials were contemplating with regard to Russia whether Trump was “acting at the behest of and somehow following directions, somehow executing their will.”
“That was one extreme. The other extreme is that the President is completely innocent, and we discussed that too,” Baker told House investigators last year. “There’s a range of things this could possibly be. We need to investigate, because we don’t know whether, you know, the worst-case scenario is possibly true or the President is totally innocent and we need to get this thing over with — and so he can move forward with his agenda.”

James Baker, still forwarding the fantasy option.

Right wingers will claim this is all deep state stuff.

Reality: all these right wing nutters would be the first to get on the impeachment train had the FBI launched an investigation into Clinton had she done any of the things Trump has actually done.

Party over nation.

The GOP ignores all the evidence of wrongdoing and malfeasance and the coincidences that aren’t - when you see a pattern of action that repeatedly inures benefits to a foreign regime over and over and over again.

All of Trump’s foreign policy actions have benefited not the US, but Russia. All of them. Undermining US leadership worldwide. Attacking our allies and strategic partners while elevating Russian agitprop and excuses for Russian aggression.

All of it.

And when did that start? We know the GOP went along with the GOP platform change that inured benefit to Russia and screwed our allies in Ukraine. But it was before that too.

All the signs point to Trump being a Russian potted plant. Trump may think he isn’t doing their bidding - that they’re doing his, but that’s semantics when he conspired with that foreign power to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 election. 18 USC 371.

It all has to be investigated and uncovered. It’ll take decades to undo the damage Trump and this GOP has done.

Got CL’d on the last thread, so I figured I’d repeat here:

Despite all things going on in the industry, I still consider myself a wrestling fan. That fact makes me understand all too well how utterly deranged the McMahon family can be, not even counting their on-screen characters. That said, there are some understatedly amazing folks employed by the WWE. Sami Zayn, for one, has used his time and fame to help rally for Syrian refugees (being a Canadian of Syrian descent).

Mustafa Ali is another, who not only has managed to get accepted by the WWE fanbase despite his initial start as a bitter foreign heel (and lets face it, overtly Muslim wrestlers are always a hard sell in this dumb country), but has been fairly open about certain experiences. He details how and why he decided to resign as a police officer in Chicago during an interview with former ring announcer Lilian Garcia (Ignore the comments. It IS Reddit, after all). Bullet points:

* He was aware how people panic over traffic stops and warrants
* He went through outstanding warrants and used the relevant emergency contacts
* He managed to encourage a lot of parents to convince their kids to come in to process the traffic warrants rather than blindside them.
* Despite managing to process all these warrants without issue, he got reprimanded for not going on the street and ‘rounding them up’.

Considering the shit about police violence and the actual, official scoring of de-escalation tactics by depts these days, him walking out on principle is a damn thing.

Doing away with the electoral college, the overturning of Citizens United and ranked choice voting would be decent starts.

As would a ratification of the ERA.

And in any case, on a legal basis, Mitch McConnell’s opinions on Steve King don’t really matter more than yours or mine: IIRC, the admission/expulsion of Members to each of the Houses of Congress is left (by the Constitution) up to each House to rule on for itself. So it’s on the HoR to do whatever about Rep. King (R - Whiteyland).

I think the system in itself isn’t the issue but we could have more representation In the House imo because it would increase accountability and make Congress more represnsative of the nation. Parliamentary style would be too big a departure imo.

The ERA could technically be only a state or two away from ratification. There’s some weird procedural stuff that happened with it back in the day that likely means Congress would have to determine whether it was properly ratified.

But I’m talking more of the “we do away with the executive presidency and make our system more like other parliaments around the world” conversation. There’s only a handful of developed nations that have our set up - us and France are the only ones that quickly come to mind.

Or let the Electoral College go through the motions but take away those two unearned votes every state gets—and forbid Electors to deviate from election results.

And if we’re really stuck at 435 Representatives for time immemorial, regardless of population (Why in the everlasting bejeezus fuck is that, anyway?), there need to be 870 votes in the Senate. Each Senator from Wyoming, for example, gets one vote, and each Senator from California gets 53, for the extreme cases.

Well, duh, yes, he’s not Canadian so can’t avail himself of the free socialist medical care.
What they are NOT SAYING is that the $7-9,000 he’ll pay in Canada absolutely PALES IN COMPARISON to what he’d have to pay out of pocket here in the states if he didn’t have insurance. Even if he did have insurance, it still pales in comparison to what he’d have to shell out for deductibles and co-pays (because we know he’d be buying the cheapest insurance possible).

Rand Paul is a putz, but in this case I will give him a pass. If I had the money to get needed surgery done the right way, I would go ahead and spend the money, even it meant flying to another country to have it done. Paul has probably heard the same horror stories about hernia operations we’ve heard, so I’m not going to diss him for choosing doctors that could save him from decades of trouble and pain. He’s 56, and if he lives as long as his dad (now 83) has, that’s potentially another 30 years of long term effects of problematic surgery.

You don’t gamble with your health.

re: #90 HappyWarrior

Pretty amazing given what he wrote about him. I do have baseball in common with Dubya and Dubya’s favorite as a kid was the same as my Dad’s- Willie Mays.

Here’s the story:

Hunter S. Thompson, the creator of Gonzo Journalism, was chosen to ride with his self-described nemesis Richard Nixon during the 1968 election. The reason? Nixon felt like talking football, and Thompson was the only journalist who knew anything about the sport.

The Good Doctor’s recollection of that car ride:

“Actually, I suspected he didn’t know football from pig-hustling and that he mentioned it from time to time only because his wizards had told him it would make him seem like a regular guy. But I was wrong. Nixon knows pro football. He’d taken Oakland and six points in the Super Bowl, he said, because Vince Lombardi had told him up in Green Bay that the AFL was much stronger than the sportswriters claimed. Nixon cited Oakland’s sustained drive in the second half as evidence of their superiority over the Kansas City team that had challenged the Packers in 1967 and had totally collapsed in the second half. ‘Oakland didn’t fold up,’ he said. ‘That second half drive had Lombardi worried.’ I remembered it, and mentioned the scoring play - a sideline pass to an unknown receiver named Bill Miller.

Nixon hesitated for a moment, then smiled broadly and slapped me on the leg. ‘That’s right,’ he said. ‘Yes, the Miami boy.’ I couldn’t believe it; he not only knew Miller, but he knew what college he’d played for. It wasn’t his factual knowledge of football that stunned me; it was his genuine interest in the game. ‘You know,’ he said, ‘the worst thing about campaigning, for me, is that it ruins my whole football season. I’m a sports buff, you know. If I had another career, I’d be a sportscaster - or a sportswriter.’

I smiled and lit a cigarette. The scene was so unreal that I felt like laughing out loud - to find myself zipping along a New England freeway in a big yellow car, being chauffeured around by a detective while I relaxed in the back seat and talked about football with my old buddy Dick Nixon, the man who came within 100,000 votes of causing me to flee the country in 1960.”

From: “Presenting: The Richard Nixon Doll (Overhauled 1968 Model)”, Pageant, July 1968.

i got stranded again… once more for the rest of the fans:

just finished the drive home

Sunday lizards know i hit this streak and ran 78 days up to the day before the dopey. Those runs included 30+ mile weekends with 20+ mile sundays.
Chasing these kinds of meaningless ‘records’ dont usually interest me and forcing them is bad and can be counterproductive.

and of course the dopey 4 days was more or less ‘guaranteed’

Nevertheless

It was ‘important’ to see if i could run at all the day after a marathon, and especially a dopey one. (dont ask me why. it’s all an obsession)
I slightly injured one of my toes yesterday and prudence would have said to take the day or a couple. And normally i would have listened.

Nevertheless

I ran around 30 minutes. Oh yes, slowly and easily.
It wasn’t particularly ‘graceful’. a fair bit achy and yet not all that difficult.

Now i could even give up tomorrow and be happy. though we’ll see wont we? After all it would be day 84.

I am also amused that Rand’s people are making a point of saying that he’s paying out-of-pocket for the surgery.

He is also going to sue the neighbor for his expenses - so it will cost him zero.

Just read about Trump’s charming nominee to replace Rapey McRaperson on the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit.

In pieces reviewed by BuzzFeed News that Rao wrote between 1994 and 1996 — she graduated from Yale University in 1995 — she described race as a “hot, money-making issue,” affirmative action as the “anointed dragon of liberal excess,” welfare as being for “for the indigent and lazy,” and LGBT issues as part of “trendy” political movements. On date rape, Rao wrote that if a woman “drinks to the point where she can no longer choose, well, getting to that point was part of her choice.”

… Trump’s nominee to replace Brett Kavanaugh on the powerful DC Circuit … has written at least two law review articles and a blog post in which she defended dwarf-tossing.

She’s never served as a judge so most (if not all) of her writing is academic.

I got an email from her.

So glad Mail and Outlook both sent it to the trash can!

Joe, do this!

Forward unwanted or deceptive messages to:

- the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov. Be sure to include the complete spam email.

- your email provider. At the top of the message, state that you’re complaining about being spammed. Some email services have buttons that allow you to mark messages as junk mail or report them spam.

- the sender’s email provider, if you can tell who it is. Most web mail providers and ISPs want to cut off spammers who abuse their system. Again, make sure to include the entire spam email and say that you’re complaining about spam.

I sure an not coming to Rand’s defense. But, the place he is going to does hernia operations without using “mesh” which has had its issues.

I should think though, the US medical industry would offer a similar practice, or there are now better procedures.

Rand is just special.

I had hernia surgery with mesh 20 years ago. No problems ever.

José Andrés, who Trump has had a beef with ever since Andrés pulled out of his plans to open a restaurant at Trump’s DC hotel after the election.

However, Andrés is doing something more important right now:

Celebrity chef turned humanitarian José Andrés has issued a new call to action during the government shutdown and will open a World Central Kitchen feeding site on Pennsylvania Avenue to provide food to furloughed government workers and their families. The operation is in the spirit of service stations set up in areas hit by natural disasters, including Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria and in Houston to help flood victims. In both instances, Andrés and his team fed thousands.

One of the reasons Shake Shack is known for their burgers is that they have top notch toppings. They get real firm/proper beefsteak tomatoes. Lettuce that is crisp and fresh, and they take the saucing seriously.

And yeah, a proper caprese requires fresh beefsteaks (though I’d argue that a good heirloom fits that bill quite nicely - along with an aged balsamic.

Tried Steak n’ Shake once - one of their locations opened up here in Northern NJ. It has since closed down.

Shakes were okay. Shake Shack is much better for those too. As is Bobby’s Burger Palace (and those burgers are good - again the sauces/condiments make the burger stand out).

I like the In and Out burgers - a solid burger and fries combo.

I usually get my burgers sans veggies. It’s a texture thing for me, I’m not good with raw veggies (can’t do salads either). So the quality of the meat and cheese is paramount for my enjoyment of a good burger.

Dad would grow heirloom tomatoes in our yard. Yeah they had odd colors and sometimes odd shapes but when they get ripe, take them off the vine, slice them and then a dab of mayo on the top…tastebud heaven…

My father grew Marglobe tomatoes in our garden He’d have maybe 12 plants and we’d have great tomatoes for sandwiches and salads and bushel baskets full that my mother would turn into tomato juice (more like sauce) and canned tomatoes quarters.

Not a big tomato, but meaty and sweet.

He had a knack for knowing exactly when and how to fertilize ending up with plants with little foliage and maximum fruit. He drove my one uncle nuts. He’d grow huge plants of Big Boys and get very little fruit.

But it does highlight how much better Canada is than the US. Seems everyone wants to go there now.

Maybe Rand will ask for asylum.

In an ideal world, he’d be able to get that kind of care in the USA, as would any ordinary schmoe, that ain’t happening any time soon. In a way, it’s karma, because the GOP’s sabotage of the ACA means Paul probably had to look outside the USA to get the procedure he wants.

Others are going to come in ahead of Graham:

Chaffetz, Rohrabacher, and Gowdy. Just you wait.

Gowdy? You think? Why?

Nunes is not out. He was reelected in November.

He was in the loop, and his actions suggest that he was running interference for Trump, rather than do proper oversight.

Honestly I will be shocked if any of those guys gets taken down. I think people put too much faith in the Mueller investigation. It is nice to hope but I just don’t see it.

I keep hearing Republicans squawking about House Democrats and antisemitism. Anyone know where that is coming from, or is it more Republican ‘what about them” bullshit?

IIRC, Democrats wouldn’t support a bill blocking sanctions against israel.

Not to mention the time scale. Took 3-4 years for Ken Starr to get President Clinton on an outright technicality. But Muller has had…18 months, if that??

Rohrabacher I can definitely see. He just couldn’t hide his ties to Russia one iota. And he’s no longer in the House.

Chaffetz and Gowdy would be icing on the Rohrabacher and Nunes cake. Don’t need to have them necessarily but it makes the cake oh so sweeter.

I’d love to see it only because of the years and years he kept hyping up the Benghazi nothingburger.

Again, not that it’s going to happen, but the pure schadenfreude from that could light up coastal villages non-stop for the next 10 years.

I should note that, at one point tonight, President Trump said he bought 300 hamburgers. Later, he claimed he bought 1,000 hamburgers.

Miracle of the Loaves and Patties.

No one is claiming that he’s actually paid for the food, just that he bought it, something he feels the need to keep mentioning.

He meant he bought 300 hamburgers for the Clemson guys. He ate the other 700. Totally consistent.

I have 6000 physical books and probably 5000 on my Kindle. I used to read about 300 books a year. Not so much these days.

I’ve read A LOT of free books and they are a real turn off. Editors are a requirement.

Now I inhale new books from my favorite authors like water for a dehydrated animal.

Obviously I don’t think he deserves the anti Semitic harassment but he’s a bully who belittles people especially women he feels are beneath his intellect. He’s really not that clever. He’s just slightly above intelligence in a movement that produces people like Trump, Hoft, & others.
