If Donald Trump were an agent of the Kremlin, what sort of things would he do?

Would he, for example, want to destroy the NATO alliance that has prevented Russia from military aggression against Europe for more than 70 years?

Because, well, he does want that. And according to this new story in the Times, he’s brought it up several times this year: Trump Discussed Pulling U.S. From NATO, Aides Say Amid New Concerns Over Russia.

WASHINGTON — There are few things that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia desires more than the weakening of NATO, the military alliance among the United States, Europe and Canada that has deterred Soviet and Russian aggression for 70 years.

Last year, President Trump suggested a move tantamount to destroying NATO: the withdrawal of the United States.

Senior administration officials told The New York Times that several times over the course of 2018, Mr. Trump privately said he wanted to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

She’s making sure Sen. Schumer holds firm and will not yield, which is pretty remarkable for someone without much, if any, leverage.

It’s pretty simple to gauge who’s winning and losing in this p***ing match, and that’s what gives me hope. I’m more annoyed than fearful, as the GOP just doesn’t want to do the obvious and admit defeat.

There has seemed to be a sort of gentlemen’s agreement for the longest time that Labour would not make a move on the Tories while May was in negotiations with Brussels. But after tonight, that agreement will have effectively run its course, as the deal negotiated will be dead and the public’s anger directed largely towards May specifically and the Tories in general for failing in 2 years to secure a withdrawal plan. Corbyn at this point would be a fool not to strike while the iron is hot.

Yes and no. I think that the idea of a shared common defense of the membership is an important goal. I also believe that the ultimate enemy has only changed it’s name from the USSR to The Russian Federation. Comrade Vladamir Vladimirovich has goals that are contrary to the rest of Europe and only the threat of a real military response will keep him out of the Baltic States and the rest of Ukraine.

How we do that is a good series of questions. I’d like to see a standing military Corps made of pan-EU & NATO units (ie including the French if they wish) that would be able to rapidly react ala the old US REFORGER strategy to any incursion into EU/NATO territory. No special weapons, just the cream of the nations’ military forces with current training and understanding of the Russian forces capabilities.

Changing gears for a second. Did anyone watch the premiere for the new True Detective yet? I like it so far. More truer to the first season with McConnaughey and Harrelson because I think the Southern gothic works better than California for that series. Plus I like Ali. Very talented actor.

Also think the storyline is really intriguing. Not just an evil guy or people out there, but something weirder.

Thought at first they were trying to mimic the true life story of the three kids murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas (the case of the so-called Satanic Ritual murders). And that might underlie the story a bit, but its going in a rather different direction than that.

Narrowing the focus to one main character instead of 7 like TD2 did, also helps.

Also watched The Bodyguard series on Netflix. That was quite good.

But in a way it goes to what I was saying. Trump’s base will say Trump is right. The Democrats will say Trump is being a big baby. The middle ground will be further frustrated.

And those not getting paid and served by the closed agencies and the like will just get more mad at everyone.

I see that as no win for anyone and a loss for all. Then those on the right say it’s the left’s fault and the left will say it is the right’s fault. And a greater majority will say fuck ‘em all.

Again…psychopath. Trump doesn’t give a damn and might even enjoy the fact he is fucking with everyone. He sees that as ultimate power.

What we need is someone to make some damn sense that can speak for a majority. I can’t identify who that would even be.

Even if the past presidents get together and try to bring some sense to it all they may be ignored by Trump and McConnell anyway.

I still get the feeling that what we are talking about comes from the initial comment I was basing my original comment on.

Someone is going to have to step forward and stop it from extreme damage. And they most likely will get stomped on by their base for giving in even if it helps actual people with huge concerns.

I totally agree.

Also think the storyline is really intriguing. Not just an evil guy or people out there, but something weirder.

Thought at first they were trying to mimic the true life story of the three kids murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas (the case of the so-called Satanic Ritual murders). And that might underlie the story a bit, but its going in a rather different direction than that.

Narrowing the focus to one main character instead of 7 like TD2 did, also helps.

Also watched The Bodyguard series on Netflix. That was quite good.

I only saw the first episode; what I took from it was that they were returning to the distant past/past/present narrative structure, and using amazing matchfades and voiceovers to show how the past bleeds over into the present, all in the persona of one tortured cop.

And yeah, the parallels to the “Murder in Paradise” case, set outside Fayetteville, Ark., was not lost on me - the three teenage metalheads, the murdered kids … there’s a lot of really intense source material to mine there.

I happen to agree. The backers of Brexit are convinced of making it happen. There’s a few on the EU side who want to teach the UK a lesson - and to use them as an example to everyone else who might think that they can just up and leave.

This guy, Dan Barnicle, was under FBI surveillance for a whole bunch of shit and never disclosed it to the community college he enrolled at, nor to the student union when he ran for the campus student government. Why the shutdown will never turn the president’s base against himPolitics, of course, is often messy and confounding. People identify with particular politicians for reasons that don’t make sense to outsiders who don’t share their politics. Sometimes one priority overshadows another. Yet several themes emerged from my research.

One was an ability of GOP voters, especially those who mistrusted the government, to hold seemingly conflicting thoughts about government services. “I’d be dead without my Medicaid,” one man told our focus groups,” and next said, “The ACA is socialism in its most evil form.”

Ineffective government also played to long-held biases and anxieties about race. One white Kansas parent who identified as a GOP supporter insisted that school budget cuts were justified because “blacks just use school funds to rent party buses.” More frequent were vague concerns about ways that minorities or immigrants usurped undeserved resources, such as when one respondent claimed that, “the Mexicans, their food stamps, everything they want, we’re paying for it.”

Such concerns sometimes led to people standing on “principle” even when it harmed them. I’ll never forget how a man pulling an oxygen tank because of severe lung disease told me he would rather die (and soon did die) than receive benefits from the ACA because it used “my tax dollars” on “Mexicans and welfare queens.” Data that my research team amassed showed how these kinds of mortal trade-offs shortened lifespans, and sometimes disproportionately harmed white communities that form the core of GOP support.

No, that was when I was a child and pre-teen in my small town in Michigan. General Telephone bought out the co-op phone company and gave everyone seven digit numbers.

That said, you still couldn’t make a direct long distance call: When you dialed a long distance number (starting with “120,” not “1”) an operator came on line asking for “number please.”

She was asking for your number, not the one you were calling, so you could be properly billed for the call.

That system in my hometown went away in 1980, when GTE finally put in direct dial long distance there.

The Outer Limits (the original) is a classic, so much so, it was restarted/revived it in the mid-90 to early aughts on what is now SyFy.

Speaking of sci-fi anthologies, The Twilight Zone’s getting another reboot/revival (its third), developed and hosted by Jordan Peele for CBS All Access sometime this year.

The best thing about The Twilight Zone was just how little it depended on special effects and other gimmickry. Think of the classic episodes, like “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” - no special effects at all, just actors on a back lot at the studio, and turning some switches on and off.

I like the concept of both Facebook and Twitter. After seeing some of the results and thinking about where they could be problematic I decided not to use them myself.

In time maybe some of the people behind them will lose control and they become more controlled in what they allow and what they do with the data.

TVs at the time of Nixon didn’t allow Nazis to advertise, Russians to invade from the back door and sell your personal information to gawd knows who all. And there was no trolling.

I have a smart phone. That is bad enough in my personal life. And I do what I can to stop ATT from selling me out as best I can.

And I don’t tell others what they can or cannot do.

I used to create custom drum cards for an IBM 026 card punch which allowed me to essentially “program” the punch card device.

What caught me off-guard at times was the computer we had in High School (Honeywell Model 58) had a different code vs. an IBM 1130-the Honeywell was looking for the equal sign as 0-8-5, whereas the IBM 1130 wanted 0-8-6.

I didn’t shave for 25 years. I finally shaved when the “Santa Claus Effect” became too pronounced. The downside was that my face was a lot rounder than I remembered. The upside was that, because my skin hardly saw sun in all that time, there’s not a lot of wrinkling on my lower face.

Other downside? Even after shaving for most of the last 10 years, I’m still not very good at it.

I was 14 years old in August 1974. We watched the Watergate Hearings in elementary school. I used to go home and watch and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one at my school in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade that did. There was a reason for this. Our Congressman, Charlie Sandman, was one of the six congressmen left in August of ‘74 that thought Nixon had done nothing wrong.

Now, the reason I made you go through that, was this. In August of 1974, William Barr would have been a 24ish-year-old law student. All I’m saying is that if there was a once-in-a-lifetime impeachment proceeding going on when I was in Law School, I’d know everything about Watergate. Of course, I’m a little OCD.

The next thing they do? The presume that the Left simply believes in the mirror image of what they think, therefore we’re supposed to believe that government does EVERYTHING better than the private sector - which literally nobody I know believes.

Yes, every conservative/libertarian meme I see assumes that and I just laugh because they don’t have the slightest clue of what we believe. I think the private sector is much better at consumer goods but when it comes to things we need, I think a combination of both is best, and some things hell yeah I think only the government should be involved. I don’t need a for profit fire department or police department or my food safety to be for profit.

As I heard about this case on NPR yesterday, it was a no-brainer unanimous decision based on technical grounds, not the merits of the case. They always choose such a one, according to Nina Totenberg, for a justice’s first opinion to write up.

Ya know, Mrs. FBW keeps saying stuff like that, but I really think it’s Trump’s power over his base. Base reaction to simply being critical of Trump was enough to make Corker and Flake give up without a fight, and to take down Sanford in the primary.

Lindsey Graham, though - that guy’s acting like somebody has some SERIOUS kompromat on him.

Except in Reagan’s case, first the military was used to fill the holes while new controllers learned their jobs, then those controllers went to jobs which actually had a paycheck.

Why would someone apply for a job when the government is shut down (and being shut down, they can’t process those applications nor pay them).

On the other hand, this plays right into the conservative and libertarian idea that we need to privatise the FAA.

Absolutely. Who’d want to work a job with no pay? There aren’t enough red hat morons to fill those positions in such a short amount of time.

This is a good point. If That Trump is compromised in the manner he is made him definitely caused him to exert control over people like Flake, Sasse et al.

I’d like to see a timeline of other events going on in the world concurrent with when Linds went off the deep end. The first time I noticed was when Rapey McBeerdrinker was going nutso during his coronation ceremony. And it seems… interesting, I have to admit.

This is the same argument conservatives make about raising the top marginal tax rate. “What’s to stop them from fleeing with their money?”

They didn’t do that during the Great Depression when those top marginal rates were put up in the first place.

Turns out plutocrats like living in developed countries.

Another point is the US plutocrats fleeing the US will end up having to deal with foreign plutocrats that are in bed with their own governments, which would be troublesome.
