Russia Wants the US to Withdraw From NATO, and Oddly Enough, So Does Donald Trump

Politics • Views: 25,587

If Donald Trump were an agent of the Kremlin, what sort of things would he do?

Would he, for example, want to destroy the NATO alliance that has prevented Russia from military aggression against Europe for more than 70 years?

Because, well, he does want that. And according to this new story in the Times, he’s brought it up several times this year: Trump Discussed Pulling U.S. From NATO, Aides Say Amid New Concerns Over Russia.

WASHINGTON — There are few things that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia desires more than the weakening of NATO, the military alliance among the United States, Europe and Canada that has deterred Soviet and Russian aggression for 70 years.

Last year, President Trump suggested a move tantamount to destroying NATO: the withdrawal of the United States.

Senior administration officials told The New York Times that several times over the course of 2018, Mr. Trump privately said he wanted to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Repeating what I wrote downstairs, that Trump is Putin’s puppet is worse for the UK than Brexit is bad for the UK.

Because if Trump has his way, the UK will be left to corral their European friends to continue NATO. Those same European friends that Brexit has spat upon.

Oh Canada…

NATO needs to rethink its mission in the changed situation in Europe since the demise of its chief nemesis, the Warsaw Pact, but that does not mean chucking it entirely.

I noted there’s speculation on the Guardian live blog that Corbyn pulled his amendment in order to speed up the process in order to get the main result in the first editions of the morning newspapers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was his intent. He may even try for the hat trick by trying to put forward a motion of no-confidence, so that the nation wakes up tomorrow to the news that not only is there no plan for Brexit, but that May’s gov’t is now imperiled because of the failure to secure a plan.

Remember that as Prez and CinC, Trump has a lot of cards up his sleeve, he has not been backed far enough into a corner to start pulling them out.

That’s a very good point. He was seen in “deep discussion” with the Speaker, and people were speculating he was discussing moving a motion of no confidence.

I have never lost my faith in the Dems ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

And ever since 2016, I can only see the worst-case scenarios unfolding.

I still think that things have to get worse before they can start getting better and they still haven’t gotten worse enough yet to turn things around.

see? There’s still an optimist in there, looking for that pony buried in that pile of horse manure…

There’s one big difference this time. And that’s Pelosi is back in the speaker chair and isn’t backing down.

As was noted before, she sacrificed her speakership and the careers of others to get the ACA passed. She’s further emboldened by the GOP senate acting in a purely defensive manner. She’s making sure Sen. Schumer holds firm and will not yield, which is pretty remarkable for someone without much, if any, leverage.

It’s pretty simple to gauge who’s winning and losing in this p***ing match, and that’s what gives me hope. I’m more annoyed than fearful, as the GOP just doesn’t want to do the obvious and admit defeat.

There has seemed to be a sort of gentlemen’s agreement for the longest time that Labour would not make a move on the Tories while May was in negotiations with Brussels. But after tonight, that agreement will have effectively run its course, as the deal negotiated will be dead and the public’s anger directed largely towards May specifically and the Tories in general for failing in 2 years to secure a withdrawal plan. Corbyn at this point would be a fool not to strike while the iron is hot.

Yes and no. I think that the idea of a shared common defense of the membership is an important goal. I also believe that the ultimate enemy has only changed it’s name from the USSR to The Russian Federation. Comrade Vladamir Vladimirovich has goals that are contrary to the rest of Europe and only the threat of a real military response will keep him out of the Baltic States and the rest of Ukraine.

How we do that is a good series of questions. I’d like to see a standing military Corps made of pan-EU & NATO units (ie including the French if they wish) that would be able to rapidly react ala the old US REFORGER strategy to any incursion into EU/NATO territory. No special weapons, just the cream of the nations’ military forces with current training and understanding of the Russian forces capabilities.

This is the problem with a psychopath in the WH.

I’m not saying it will be blamed on Democrats, and I think you get that.

I am saying it will just be pure anger and then anything goes. That usually means the all politicians suck thinking and vote all of them out.

Then default setting take place. Everyone to their corners and the battles resume.

Something shocking that really hurts Trump’s position is much needed.

In the past that is where the old-time journalists would provide clear thinking and point out the facts.

Mitch needs to be a target of the DSCC. Every shady thing he’s done for partisan reasons needs to be aired out. Make life hell for him. Make sure instead of merely becoming the minority leader for the next term, he’s out of office and just grifting on FNC.

Or watching FNC on that ceiling-mounted, cage-protected TV in the rec room, where the guard gets the remote.

You come from a family of abolitionists and live in an Union state yet you have a CSA flag in your office, Steve. What does that tell you about the kind of man you are? Also your ancestors being abolitionists don’t mean shit. And maybe you are right about one thing, it is pretty convenient that your Republican colleagues are throwing you to the way side now but don’t act like you haven’t been a racist prick for years because you have and hiding behind your dead ancestor is cickenshit.

Changing gears for a second. Did anyone watch the premiere for the new True Detective yet? I like it so far. More truer to the first season with McConnaughey and Harrelson because I think the Southern gothic works better than California for that series. Plus I like Ali. Very talented actor.

I totally agree.

Also think the storyline is really intriguing. Not just an evil guy or people out there, but something weirder.

Thought at first they were trying to mimic the true life story of the three kids murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas (the case of the so-called Satanic Ritual murders). And that might underlie the story a bit, but its going in a rather different direction than that.

Also, um, isn’t Farrakhan actually a Republican?

Subject to change if he is.

Farrakhan is actually all in on what he can get. So Farrakhan is for Farrakhan.

Like others said last evening, Farrakhan is only scary to people about 55 years of age. But that is where a large sector of voting comes from.

One more missed pay period is going to really hurt. Then reasonable thinking is going to meet panic. Panic results in anger and unclear thinking.

I worry we won’t see that.

Interesting to note, the State of the Union is on January 29. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think that would be Trump and the GOP’s last stand on this whole thing, on national TV.

And if it bombs like everything else he’s done to try and sell this thing…

So? Let him do that. Holding a temper tantrum would be as effective as giving the speech, which would amount to 90 minutes of whining why the Democrats won’t just cave into his demands.

But in a way it goes to what I was saying. Trump’s base will say Trump is right. The Democrats will say Trump is being a big baby. The middle ground will be further frustrated.

And those not getting paid and served by the closed agencies and the like will just get more mad at everyone.

I see that as no win for anyone and a loss for all. Then those on the right say it’s the left’s fault and the left will say it is the right’s fault. And a greater majority will say fuck ‘em all.

Again…psychopath. Trump doesn’t give a damn and might even enjoy the fact he is fucking with everyone. He sees that as ultimate power.

What we need is someone to make some damn sense that can speak for a majority. I can’t identify who that would even be.

Even if the past presidents get together and try to bring some sense to it all they may be ignored by Trump and McConnell anyway.

I still get the feeling that what we are talking about comes from the initial comment I was basing my original comment on.

Someone is going to have to step forward and stop it from extreme damage. And they most likely will get stomped on by their base for giving in even if it helps actual people with huge concerns.

And yeah, the parallels to the “Murder in Paradise” case, set outside Fayetteville, Ark., was not lost on me - the three teenage metalheads, the murdered kids … there’s a lot of really intense source material to mine there.

The English means simply “as events pass” or “gradually” while the German version means more “depending on the outcome of events”. That led to a big blowup at some business negotiations I was interpreting for…

This may be a legend, but supposedly in Yorkshire dialect, “till” means “while”. The story is that a Yorkshire supervisor told his southern English assistant not to light a fire under the boiler “till” it was empty, and…something ensued—not hilarity.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, but the original tweet’s replies are a trashfire absolving the guy of all blame and saying the girl shouldn’t have been “raging around” and thus deserved to get punched.

Because yes, we’re still at a point in this country where it’s ok for an adult male to punch an 11 year old girl, long as she’s black.

Because 11-year-old black girls are all 7 feet tall, 300 pounds, and built like a MMA fighter.

What gets me is that we still have people who assume that relative results of written IQ tests represent the difference in relative intelligence 1:1

Most of the engineers, scientists, teachers, businesspeople, whites, etc, are heavily invested in that being true. We’re taught it from childhood.

I told her that I was not thirsty.

Turns out she was offering food: “Do you want some(thing) tea(t)?

I hope so!!!

Maybe that will bring the Republican senate to its senses.

It won’t do anything to Trump. Nothing is ever his fault.

I 100% agree with you that one more lost paycheck will result in hell to pay. But with the way public opinion is solidly stacked on this, it won’t be “all are to blame” but the Senate GOP specifically.

I wouldn’t feel that way if both-sider-ism and whataboutism was showing up more in the polls, or if there weren’t more consistent showings that pin it solidly on Trump and the GOP. But neither of which is the case here.

GOOD!

But, just to clarify, James Watson didn’t “discover DNA”. DNA had been known about for a long, long time. What he and Francis Crick did, with the help of Maurice Wilkins after stealing a look at Rosalind Franklin’s X-Ray Crystallography, was to deduce the double-helical structure, which then allowed everyone to figure out how it worked.

Earlier Hershey-Chase experiments had already demonstrated that DNA was the molecule that carried inheritance, but nobody knew how that worked.

Brexit needs to die a swift death at this time, and mea culpas extended to the EU over this shitshow that was foisted on the British people.

The British people better be asking deep probing questions as to who was pushing the lies that convinced so many to quit the EU instead of staying in.

They were sold a lie that it would generate money for NHS. They rode around in buses saying just that. That was a lie - the proponents admitted as much.

So, who was really driving this schism in the EU?

My guess? Russia - mainly on who benefits from the weakened EU and UK.

It dovetails nicely with Russia’s other moves internationally to cleave the US from NATO/EU and our strategic partners, and to insert chaos all over the place thanks to the Trumpworld vision for the world that oddly coincides with what Russia prefers.

Plus a bunch of libertarians in that thread are arguing that “we need to get rid of the FDA” (having apparently never read Upton Sinclair and why the so-called free market won’t sell tainted products).

On top of that, a woman weighed in on her husband being furloughed (his job is to track child traffickers or child sexual abusers), with a bunch of libertarians weighing in on the talking point there should be no statutory rape or child sex assault laws.

My sister-in-law speaks thick Glaswegian and once asked me what I though was “Do you want some tea?”

I told her that I was not thirsty.

Turns out she was offering food: “Do you want some(thing) tea(t)?

I learned that the *thing* (more of a *pm*) was replaced by a nasal exhalation and the final *t* by a swallowed glottal stop…

I once lived below an Australian couple who invited me to tea. So I ate my dinner and went up to find a full meal waiting for me.

“We have government inspections and still people die from contaminated food, so clearly they’re not doing any good” is not an argument that actually makes sense.

No different than gun nuts: We have gun laws and people are still killed with guns, so clearly gun laws don’t do any good.

Both are all-or-nothing arguments. You could use the same for drunk drive laws, speeding laws, insider trading laws, &c.

Mind if I add something else, she was born in 1900-01, she probably met someone who lived in the 1700’s possibly and she probably met a child now that will be alive in the 2100’s. Your perspective on it is great too. It’s how I think about my third grandmother born in 1817 who died in 1908. She was born in a part of Ireland that only spoke Irish, very rural and spent her last years in industrial Pittsburgh after the Wright Brothers flew.

And she likely met veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, Great War, WWII, Korea, VN, etc.

TSA workers remaining at their posts is the main reason government shutdowns keep happening. Dear Manosphere (and Piers Morgan):

It has come to our attention that you are extremely distraught over a recent ad from a razor company. An ad that encouraged you to take said razors and slice off your own testicles with them so that you will be better suited to live in modern society and delight us all as members of a castrati choir. An advertisement that demanded you be “weak, spineless, sobbing wrecks” instead of the manly men you were meant to be. An advertisement that demanded you wear pink all of the time whether it goes with your complexion or not. An advertisement that chastised you for historically fighting in wars started by other dudes.

Devastating indictment:
Why the shutdown will never turn the president’s base against him

Why the shutdown will never turn the president’s base against himPolitics, of course, is often messy and confounding. People identify with particular politicians for reasons that don’t make sense to outsiders who don’t share their politics. Sometimes one priority overshadows another. Yet several themes emerged from my research.

One was an ability of GOP voters, especially those who mistrusted the government, to hold seemingly conflicting thoughts about government services. “I’d be dead without my Medicaid,” one man told our focus groups,” and next said, “The ACA is socialism in its most evil form.”

Ineffective government also played to long-held biases and anxieties about race. One white Kansas parent who identified as a GOP supporter insisted that school budget cuts were justified because “blacks just use school funds to rent party buses.” More frequent were vague concerns about ways that minorities or immigrants usurped undeserved resources, such as when one respondent claimed that, “the Mexicans, their food stamps, everything they want, we’re paying for it.”

Such concerns sometimes led to people standing on “principle” even when it harmed them. I’ll never forget how a man pulling an oxygen tank because of severe lung disease told me he would rather die (and soon did die) than receive benefits from the ACA because it used “my tax dollars” on “Mexicans and welfare queens.” Data that my research team amassed showed how these kinds of mortal trade-offs shortened lifespans, and sometimes disproportionately harmed white communities that form the core of GOP support.

Not just that nobody would know “The Outer Limits”, but more that TVs don’t have cathode ray tubes anymore, hence no Vertical Control or Horizontal Control.

The Outer Limits (the original) is a classic, so much so, it was rebooted/revived from 1995-2002 on Showtime, then on what is now SyFy.

Speaking of sci-fi anthologies, The Twilight Zone’s getting another reboot/revival (its third), developed and hosted by Jordan Peele for CBS All Access sometime this year.

Nazi bullshit can reasonably be regarded as incitement to go out and kill the nearest jews etc. As such, it can reasonably be suppressed as trying to incite a riot. US courts haven’t gone with this reasoning, but I’m tending to think that line of cases is in error.

No, that was when I was a child and pre-teen in my small town in Michigan. General Telephone bought out the co-op phone company and gave everyone seven digit numbers.

That said, you still couldn’t make a direct long distance call: When you dialed a long distance number (starting with “120,” not “1”) an operator came on line asking for “number please.”

She was asking for your number, not the one you were calling, so you could be properly billed for the call.

That system in my hometown went away in 1980, when GTE finally put in direct dial long distance there.

The best thing about The Twilight Zone was just how little it depended on special effects and other gimmickry. Think of the classic episodes, like “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” - no special effects at all, just actors on a back lot at the studio, and turning some switches on and off.

I like the concept of both Facebook and Twitter. After seeing some of the results and thinking about where they could be problematic I decided not to use them myself.

In time maybe some of the people behind them will lose control and they become more controlled in what they allow and what they do with the data.

TVs at the time of Nixon didn’t allow Nazis to advertise, Russians to invade from the back door and sell your personal information to gawd knows who all. And there was no trolling.

What caught me off-guard at times was the computer we had in High School (Honeywell Model 58) had a different code vs. an IBM 1130-the Honeywell was looking for the equal sign as 0-8-5, whereas the IBM 1130 wanted 0-8-6.

I used to create custom drum cards for an IBM 026 card punch which allowed me to essentially “program” the punch card device.

What caught me off-guard at times was the computer we had in High School (Honeywell Model 58) had a different code vs. an IBM 1130-the Honeywell was looking for the equal sign as 0-8-5, whereas the IBM 1130 wanted 0-8-6.

As I have said frequently, I started on an IBM 1120!

Okay, this is going to take a minute. Been distracted watching hearings today.

I was 14 years old in August 1974. We watched the Watergate Hearings in elementary school. I used to go home and watch and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one at my school in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade that did. There was a reason for this. Our Congressman, Charlie Sandman, was one of the six congressmen left in August of ‘74 that thought Nixon had done nothing wrong.

Now, the reason I made you go through that, was this. In August of 1974, William Barr would have been a 24ish-year-old law student. All I’m saying is that if there was a once-in-a-lifetime impeachment proceeding going on when I was in Law School, I’d know everything about Watergate. Of course, I’m a little OCD.

Just thought of this and not sure if anyone mentioned —

No, that was when I was a child and pre-teen in my small town in Michigan. General Telephone bought out the co-op phone company and gave everyone seven digit numbers.

That said, you still couldn’t make a direct long distance call: When you dialed a long distance number (starting with “120,” not “1”) an operator came on line asking for “number please.”

She was asking for your number, not the one you were calling, so you could be properly billed for the call.

That system in my hometown went away in 1980, when GTE finally put in direct dial long distance there.

I can remember six-digit numbers. We went from GLadstone-2562 to EMerson 3-2562. Another number to remember! No area codes then, though.

I agree that TSA workers more or less going on strike is one way to pressure Congressional Republicans to stop their stupidity. But that will just get them fired and blacklisted by Trump like Reagan did with the air traffic controllers.

It’s much like asking black people to test the boundaries of open/concealed carry and stand your ground laws in backward states to demonstrate the absurdity of such laws.

Except in Reagan’s case, first the military was used to fill the holes while new controllers learned their jobs, then those controllers went to jobs which actually had a paycheck.

Why would someone apply for a job when the government is shut down (and being shut down, they can’t process those applications nor pay them).

On the other hand, this plays right into the conservative and libertarian idea that we need to privatise the FAA.

Stupid, maybe. Short-sighted and selfish, absolutely. They are in a short-sell situation because of their age. They are okay with mortgaging the future as long as they get to keep their power and their prestige. I think they just don’t understand the full ramifications of what they have wrought. Yes, every conservative/libertarian meme I see assumes that and I just laugh because they don’t have the slightest clue of what we believe. I think the private sector is much better at consumer goods but when it comes to things we need, I think a combination of both is best, and some things hell yeah I think only the government should be involved. Ya know, Mrs. FBW keeps saying stuff like that, but I really think it’s Trump’s power over his base. Base reaction to simply being critical of Trump was enough to make Corker and Flake give up without a fight, and to take down Sanford in the primary.

Lindsey Graham, though - that guy’s acting like somebody has some SERIOUS kompromat on him.

This is a good point. If That Trump is compromised in the manner he is made him definitely caused him to exert control over people like Flake, Sasse et al.

I’d like to see a timeline of other events going on in the world concurrent with when Linds went off the deep end. The first time I noticed was when Rapey McBeerdrinker was going nutso during his coronation ceremony. And it seems… interesting, I have to admit.

This is the same argument conservatives make about raising the top marginal tax rate. “What’s to stop them from fleeing with their money?”

They didn’t do that during the Great Depression when those top marginal rates were put up in the first place.

Turns out plutocrats like living in developed countries.

Another point is the US plutocrats fleeing the US will end up having to deal with foreign plutocrats that are in bed with their own governments, which would be troublesome.

Dated a couple girls who lived one exchange south of me, in Butterfield 8.

Our phone number was one digit off from the local post office. When I would answer our home phone, callers would sometimes wonder why a kid was working for the post office. If I had been more of a mischief maker, I could have had a lot of fun telling people to wait while I searched for their missing item.
