A total miscalculation on his part, thinking that Sen. Schumer and the senate Democrats would cave, but they hadn’t and aren’t.

It’s not really about Putin, or even Trump, it’s just a threat to his own ego. McConnell has more than had his way forever, especially since 2014. A loss on this issue, in the manner it was set up, would cripple him.

Basically, it is a framework of discussion on how different systems of power in society interlock against those who are (or can be) marginalised in society. That can include race, women, gender, disability, the poor, minority religious faiths (or no religious faith), &c.

That makes sense to me. And that really is the triumph of the GI Bill right there. I’d be curious to see the amount of post secondary education in 1940 versus today. My one grandfather never went to college or an university but he did use his GI benefits for trade school which allowed him to pursue the career he wanted to do and that really is why my mom and uncle were able to get the life they got. My mom didn’t grow up affluent, far from it but she grew up decent enough that her and her brother could afford college and get degrees.

Well, I’m a firm believer in the idea that you don’t really understand something unless you can explain some of it to kids. I also know that not everyone is experienced in finance and that these things must be explained to them.

As a teacher or trainer you should be able to explain the same thing three different ways. One reason is age and experience of the audience.. another is that some people just don’t get some concepts the first time.

I was having a conversation with a few friends. One a more hardcore libertarian and the other two who have a good amount of libertarian beliefs but are more practical minded when it comes to economics. Anyhow, we were discussing what we thought the greatest triumphs and two of us including me said the GI Bill because of how many people it helped get educations that wouldn’t have otherwise. My other buddy pointed to the federal highway system that Ike implemented which I also thought was a good point. Point I guess in the end is that government certainly isn’t a malignant force. It can and in fact is often a positive force in society’s successes.

I had an instructor at my art college who one day had a student in our advanced typography class that was just lazy and couldn’t comprehend concepts. He was always being a pain in the ass.

One class the student said something like “I don’t get this, and I think you are teaching too fast.”

The teacher dryly said: “If I teach down to your level and slow everything down I will bore and be a disservice to all the other students in this class. I hope you understand that at least.”

And he went on. That student didn’t make it. He was gone after the second year.

I still use that as an example of how you have to keep the smart ones smart and hope others will learn something and maybe learn to learn. Come along or be left behind.

I think I eventually ended up with four different ways to explain my dissertation topic. Even for people in the same field with the same background, some explanations were useless and others worked like a charm. And it was different from person to person, so there was no ‘best’ explanation.

I’d assume those between 35 and 64 is probably somewhere in the middle. It’s still the most educated we’ve ever been

See for me, my degree helped me understand things better. It helped with my critical thinking and writing skills. My paralegal certificate likewise gave me an understanding about the law that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Another good one was Almost Human.

It should be illegal for Fox to ever be allowed to have anything to do with SciFi. That show was excellent but they did the same thing as what they did to Firefly, they showed episodes out of order which made things not make sense.

Karl Urban and Michael Ealy were excellent in that show just like Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres and Morena Bacharan were in Firefly.

I wish I had better handwriting. I joke about it but I hate it being so crappy. I always felt I would have done better in school if I were a little younger than I was. I actually did better in college than high school since I had access to more computers to type my work. I did have an Alpha Smart that I used in grade school on and off but it really wasn’t that user friendly and it was a pain in the ass but had I been born in 1997 rather than 1987, I probably would have gotten it in my IEP to be able to take a laptop to class and take notes.

I don’t know. A single screening test doesn’t seem to me to be able to correctly pigeonhole someone.

My best friend in the Navy was in a motorcycle accident and also put out of the service. The VA did not rate him unemployable (despite being on a walker to this day), and sent him to college for a PhD in physics. He is now a professor of physics.

A couple years ago, the VA sent him on a summer internship to CERN.

They also bought him a pickup truck with certain modifications since he can’t ride a motorcycle anymore.

Lesson learned: I should have learned to ride motorcycles. /s

Me too. I took the nuns in Catholic school seriously and then the artist side of me kicked in too. I could do cursive and print very well.

My cursive is not as good now as I don’t use it all that much anymore.

For your kids generation and also that of my youngest brother who funnily enough was born when I was in 8th grade keyboarding, typing is so much more important. Keyboarding wasn’t the most exciting elective that I ever took but it by far was the most important. I’m glad to see that it’s required now the way shop used to be. Shop was fun but not really practical as keyboarding turned out to be.

Modern methods of communication make such things increasingly irrelevant. I recall visiting with some friends about a decade ago, and talking with their son (then aged about 14). He literally couldn’t (or, to be precise, never bothered to) write longhand. Anything. His logic? Anything important to communicate could be typed. Except for his signature, which was basically a stylized glyph, so why bother “writing”?

I wish I had better handwriting. I joke about it but I hate it being so crappy. I always felt I would have done better in school if I were a little younger than I was. I actually did better in college than high school since I had access to more computers to type my work. I did have an Alpha Smart that I used in grade school on and off but it really wasn’t that user friendly and it was a pain in the ass but had I been born in 1997 rather than 1987, I probably would have gotten it in my IEP to be able to take a laptop to class and take notes.

Yes, engineers print in nice block letters. My cursive handwriting is actually immaculate, because I use it so rarely that I have to focus on it just to remember the shapes of all the letters. My hurried chicken-scratch writing looks like hot garbage, though.

When I took the GRE, they made me copy the paragraph stating the rules in cursive before I could take the test. I was 35, and hadn’t written cursive in 16 years. It took me about 15 minutes to copy a ten line set of instructions.

My one grandfather never went to college or an university but he did use his GI benefits for trade school which allowed him to pursue the career he wanted to do and that really is why my mom and uncle were able to get the life they got. My mom didn’t grow up affluent, far from it but she grew up decent enough that her and her brother could afford college and get degrees.

The doctor decided to get extra training to be a radiologist and sent my grandfather to Case Western Reserve in Ohio for college to become a radiology technician. He didn’t have a high school diploma which was a necessary item to get admitted to the college. My grandmother somehow got hold of official letterhead from a school and made up a fake high school transcript so he could get admitted!!! He ended up being the first radiology technician in Las Vegas, Nevada when the doctor moved here back in the 1950s. He worked for iterations of that company for over 50 years! My dad was the next person who got a degree, a Ph.D. in zoology.

Basically the same. I’ve been using keyboards since I learned to type in 1980. I’ve utterly forgotten how to write cursive, outside of my signature. If I have to write by hand, it’s block lettering, and even that’s falling apart now.

If I could get out of writing checks completely, I’d never hand write anything again.

Provide the training that students want and I’ll bet you’d actually see graduation rates climb because they would have a reason for going to school.

Your grandfather sounds like he lived a fascinating life and you’re showing why I love genealogy. I love stories like that. My Grandpa’s story was pretty much he saw his brothers and dad work in the mines. He definitely saw that the mines and steel mills shortened lives. He tried working in a steel mill or coal mine, I’m not sure if it it was before or after he got shipped out to Korea but he apparently didn’t like it. Like my brother- the father of my niece he loved being outside so he trained to become a brickmason. He did that for a lot of years, worked along side Richard Loving of Loving v Virginia fame I kid you not, and even employed some cocky hippie that about ten years later would become his son in law(my Dad). But it was good. He lived to be 79 and although it’s been ten years since he left us now, I know he got a good life because of the GI Bill that he wouldn’t ahve otherwise. We’re convinced that he had a learning disability and probably would have needed an IEP like my one brother and I did. had he gone to school now.

I remember Obama talking about the idea that everyone should have some sort of post secondary education. I think there ought to be some basics taught - literature, government, history - but we really should do a better job of identifying the level of school needed for careers and not stigmatize two year colleges or trade schools. Personally, I don’t even think a lot of software engineering needs full degrees. Really, a trade school and internships would work better.

Few people in our area have college degrees. The majority would be either teachers or women with secretarial school diplomas. Of course, there are doctors and lawyers, but they are not the norm.

And having a degree myself in elementary education, it’s frankly a cakewalk degree. Or at least I thought so until I saw people who was completely struggling, couldn’t pass the PRAXIS test, never could understand any of the concepts of how to teach, classroom management, etc. It’s basically a degree in common sense, if you ask me. Oh, and you SHOULD be able to pass the PRAXIS test. It’s not difficult and if you can’t pass it, you don’t have the content knowledge to teach. Geez Louise.

Tell us more. I hadn’t heard about this and yeah while I don’t consider myself a fan of his, it’s disappointing because he seems like a decent enough guy but I’ve been disappointed by people before. I think that speaks at why I feel Bernie’s free college for all isn’t the solution. The solution is accommodations. One side effect of Asperger’s is shitty handwriting. I have terrible handwriting. No one can consistently read it. I managed to get an accommodation that allowed me to type my tests.

And, one usually has to have parents who are willing to go to the mat to get the accommodations in the first place for their kids. I think it’s starting to get easier to get them, but it was a real struggle when I was teaching 15 years ago.

When I was in grade school, we had things like speech therapy which did help me. I still slightly lisp my words I’m told and some self contained (smaller classes). The thing is everyone’s different. I probably could have done AP history and passed with flying colors but I also needed a smaller class for something like math. I think I struggled especially with math in college because the math course required for history majors was a Gen Ed that had a huge class and the professor wouldn’t have had time to meet with me one or one. I did finally end up passing but tbh I got really lucky with the professor who allowed us a retake. Some of my skills are savant like. I’m very good what I’m very good at but I’m awful what I’m awful at. I struggled alot with the required IT course that we had. Fortunately my final semester I was able to take a class that combined history and IT and had a great professor for that course.

I have the duel curse of being both on the spectrum and being a lefty. However since my niece started writing, I can’t fully blame being a lefty anymore since her handwriting while not great is good. I think it runs in our family though. My other two brothers’ handwriting isn’t the best either.

My daughter is a lefty on the spectrum and her printing has always been surprisingly good. It’s very strange. I see her handwriting now compared to her sister’s and I can’t tell the difference except by the grammar. LOL.

I had to go look up what the PRAXIS test entails. That’s quite a slug of knowledge there. I’m pleased to see my state requires it (but Nebraska has always been big on public education).

Modern methods of communication make such things increasingly irrelevant. I recall visiting with some friends about a decade ago, and talking with their son (then aged about 14). He literally couldn’t (or, to be precise, never bothered to) write longhand. Anything. His logic? Anything important to communicate could be typed. Except for his signature, which was basically a stylized glyph, so why bother “writing”?

Hey, I get where he’s coming from. I could write perfectly in cursive until way too many “I will not do…” sentences that screwed up my handwriting, but I always figured that it was difficult to read anyway. If I write something, I want people to read it easily and that’s why I print.

When I was younger, the populism my grandfather tried to instill me with was a concern that the little guy wasn’t being taken advantage of by a powerful entity. Didn’t matter whether it was the government, coal mining company, or whatever. Grandpa was far from perfect and definitely not the most enlightened person I met on race and immigrants but he did see that populism wasn’t about artificial or trivial grievances.

For your kids generation and also that of my youngest brother who funnily enough was born when I was in 8th grade keyboarding, typing is so much more important. Keyboarding wasn’t the most exciting elective that I ever took but it by far was the most important. I’m glad to see that it’s required now the way shop used to be. Shop was fun but not really practical as keyboarding turned out to be.

I wish I had taken shop in high school. My dad insisted that I take typing, however, way back in 1982-1983 and I ended up learning how, in my second year of it, doing word processing on an Apple IIe computer. That has been incredibly helpful in my current occupation as a medical transcriptionist.

I had an instructor at my art college who one day had a student in our advanced typography class that was just lazy and couldn’t comprehend concepts. He was always being a pain in the ass.

One class the student said something like “I don’t get this, and I think you are teaching too fast.”

The teacher dryly said: “If I teach down to your level and slow everything down I will bore and be a disservice to all the other students in this class. I hope you understand that at least.”

And he went on. That student didn’t make it. He was gone after the second year.

I still use that as an example of how you have to keep the smart ones smart and hope others will learn something and maybe learn to learn. Come along or be left behind.

This is one of the great challenges as a teacher. At what point do you make clear to your students, “Look, I’m making this subject as easy and clear as I can. Now, it’s up to you to meet me halfway.” At the high school level, that can be a problem, because students are often not mature or committed enough to up their game. It’s easier for college instructors and professors, because we can assume a student has taken a class because it’s either something he or she likes or because they have to take it for their major. Either way, college students are supposed to be more responsible for their learning, and they shouldn’t be expecting the prof to spoon feed the course to them.

Referencing the Pentagon Papers comments above, Nixon’s DOJ tried to prosecute the reporters under the 1917 Espionage Act, went after the Washington Post and New York Times claiming prior restraint. They also tried to prosecute the senator’s staff who worked to release them into the Congressional Record.

(All going after the newspapers did was cause more newspapers to publish the papers.)

This is nothing new for Republicans.

When I took the GRE, they made me copy the paragraph stating the rules in cursive before I could take the test. I was 35, and hadn’t written cursive in 16 years. It took me about 15 minutes to copy a ten line set of instructions.

OMG! I had to do that for the PRAXIS exams. I hadn’t written in cursive in about 20 years. I was more worried about that part of the test than the rest of it!

Basically the same. I’ve been using keyboards since I learned to type in 1980. I’ve utterly forgotten how to write cursive, outside of my signature. If I have to write by hand, it’s block lettering, and even that’s falling apart now.

If I could get out of writing checks completely, I’d never hand write anything again.

The only time I could actually write cursive as an adult was on the whiteboard in my classroom. Weird.

I had to go look up what the PRAXIS test entails. That’s quite a slug of knowledge there. I’m pleased to see my state requires it (but Nebraska has always been big on public education).
