As much as it is surprising to see Sen. Schumer have a renewed sense of fortitude, it’s also starting to rub off on his colleagues. Not that Schatz and Murphy weren’t resolute and outspoken before, but together as a group?

Good evening.
Your SF Bay Area weather update: The wind is blowing. Rain is bucketing down. Power is out all over the place (though not here…yet.) Tomorrow is trash pick up so I put the cans out. We live on a rather steep hill, so with the wind and the water pouring down the gutter they won’t stay upright. I’m hoping that a.) most of the contents remain in the cans and b.) things will have calmed down enough to set them upright again before we go to bed so things can be picked up by those garbage trucks with the automated arms. We shall see.

Frankly, I’m surprised it hadn’t been done already; Ali’s name is everywhere in Louisville, as it should be.
Also, airport codes don’t often change in any case; ours here in Nashville has been BNA since the 1930s (Berry Field NAshville). Any airport code change would be a major pain in the ass to get it through the FAA, the ICAO, and the airlines.

Last week there was some discussion of Chinese food. I saw this today in one of the New York Times email newsletters:
Cultivating a taste for potatoes
By some estimates, China’s population of 1.4 billion is nearing its peak. To feed that many people, while trying to use less land and water, the government is appealing to taste buds.
For several years, official policy has aimed to make potatoes a culinary staple, alongside rice, wheat and corn.
Potatoes can tolerate cold, drought and poor soil, and they need less water, fertilizer, pesticide and labor than other staples. Since the 1990s, China has outstripped all other countries in production.
Potatoes are hardly new to China. They were introduced about 400 years ago, and feature in beloved regional dishes like the shredded Sichuan specialty tudousi.
But for starch, the Chinese prefer rice and noodles.
One workaround is to process the tubers into potato flour, which is then mixed with wheat flour to make steamed bread, noodles or cakes. The government also promotes regional potato dishes, and supports the production of fries and potato chips.

May is incredibly stubborn, in a stupid way not an admirable way. Her proposal was soundly defeated. The EU is not going to renegotiate terms. And her saying a general election now would only create more chaos is fearmongering. Like Trump, she’s painted herself into a corner where the only viable option is to surrender to reality, else stay the course and ruin the country.
I’ve noticed that quite a few of the Brexiteers are still laboring under the delusion that the UK holds all the cards and perhaps May is among those who share in that delusion.
You know, I can understand the notion of taking “no-deal” off the table…..but on the other hand, the threat of a crash and burn come March 30th should (theoretically and ideally) force the UK Parliament to come to their senses. But it seems that they’ve allowed themselves to be taken hostage by ideological tribalism.
And there’s a good chance the whole country is going to suffer as a result.
Checks on both sides of Irish border ‘mandatory under no-deal Brexit’
Michael Lux, a former head of customs legislation and procedures at the European commission, said the UK would have to impose customs checks and tariffs on the northern side of the border, despite claims to the contrary by Brexiters.
Under WTO rules, the UK could opt for zero tariffs, but it would be obliged to offer this free-trade deal to every other country. This would mean cheap food and dairy products, which currently attract high tariffs, from countries such as Brazil or New Zealand, and might also lead to chlorinated chicken from the US ending up on British supermarket shelves.

It already is. People from the Continent are relocating, and financial institutions and companies are moving their offices. The only sane decision to make is a painful one. Admit that Brexit is a colossal mistake and accept the consequences at the ballot box.

I’ve already met three Brits here in Ostrava (married to Czechs) who’ve relocated in the last year or so - and they’ve openly told me it was entirely because of Brexit that they’ve decided to settle down here in the Czech Republic.
And I agree, the only rational decision is to admit that Brexit was - and is - a colossal blunder and that it must be revoked.
A lot of people are going to be absolutely livid…..indeed, there might even be some incidents of violence or civil disturbances. But it’s better to revoke Article 50 and have to deal with the brief smell of shit than have to face the crash and burn alternative - and end up eating shit for the rest of their lives.

re: #122 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam
And I forgot to add this whole Brexit debacle isn’t being made any better by Her Majesty’s Opposition; Jeremy Corbyn is a lifelong left-wing Euroskeptic and there’s a part of me that can’t help but think that he himself wants to see a no-deal Brexit crashout with a view towards riding the ensuing tsunami of chaos to electoral victory (and in some fairness, he might not be wrong in that assessment).
Labour has decided they will back Jeremy Corbyn in boycotting Brexit talks with PM May until she explicitly rules out a no-deal Brexit.

Well, then. Ball is back in May’s court.
re: #127 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam
Well, then. Ball is back in May’s court.
What a pickle she’s in - as a human being, I feel some sympathy for her. She’s painted herself into a corner and now there’s no way out, either for her or the party she leads.
It’s a Catch-22 that would have Yossarian rolling on the floor.
It reminds me of a WWII anecdote I read about in Rise and Fall of the Third Reich; During the Battle of Stalingrad, there was a OKW General who was desperately trying to wring permission from Hitler for von Paulus’ 6th Army to retreat, reform and counterattack. Hitler, of course, refused; however, finally, and after much pleading, Hitler told him that the 6th Army could withdraw from Stalingrad provided they did not actually leave Stalingrad.
As that hapless general explained it after the war, “That bit of foolishness almost drove me insane” - and I can certainly understand why. It was a real-life Catch-22.
A little update on the Brexit shitshow:
The Lib Dems have suggested they may not back Labour in future confidence votes if Jeremy Corbyn does not back a second referendum, suggesting any further attempts would only be in order to evade the issue.
The leaders of the Lib Dems, SNP, Greens and Plaid Cymru wrote to the Labour leader last night saying the failure to force a general election meant the party must endorse a public vote on Brexit.
A Lib Dem source said later that the party would not back any attempts at no confidence votes unless they appeared to be a genuine change of circumstance.
“We will support any real opportunity to take down the Tories with relish,” the source said. “We will not be party to Corbyn using spurious means to avoid Labour policy, by pursuing unwinnable no confidence votes.”
David Mundell tells #bbcgms “everything is on the table” for cross party talks, but says that excludes “arrangements that seek to stop Brexit” - including another referendum
— Gary Robertson (@BBCGaryR) January 17, 2019
So everything is not on the table. PM’s offer of talks is a promise to listen, but only if we all agree with her. @theSNP won’t be complicit in more time wasting. Rule out no deal, be prepared to extend Art 50 and agree to at least consider another referendum - then we’ll talk. https://t.co/6ZRtoEfqxT

Russia has long been into subverting climate change mitigation efforts on a global scale.
And that is why Putin and his petro-oligarchs are so much in bed with the US Republican party.
The petro-alliance between Russia, the US, and OPEC is why there is not a global treaty on climate change that is enforceable.
Under surface of Russia’s Arctic super-region is looming disaster
Big developments are in the making on the vast tundra of Yamal. Only few decades ago, these wide and open stretches of Arctic lands were the uncontested domain of Nenets reindeer herders who moved with their great flocks across the peninsula, from the harsh coasts of the Kara Sea, along the shores of the Ob Gulf and the Baydarata Bay and south towards the towns of Labytnangi and Salekhard.
Around are flat lands as long as the eye can see, big wetlands and thousands of lakes. And underneath the ground is a thick layer of permafrost and trillions of cubic meters of natural gas.
[…]
«Our mission is to produce hydrocarbons and deliver to the markeds,» regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov underlined in an address delivered at the event. He shrugged off questions about the need for alternative energy sources and focus on climate change.
That is not for us, he made clear.
[…]
About 90 percent of Russia’s natural gas and about 12 percent of oil is today produced in the Yamal Nenets region, and a number of new fields are up for development in the years to come. Among them are the Tambey fields that are believed to hold more than 7 trillion cubic meters of gas.
[…]
Most Russians have a growing awareness of global warming. According to a poll conducted by sociological research institute VCIOM in 2017, as many as 86 percent of respondents agree that the global climate is changing. But Russians in general remain highly skeptic towards researchers’ assurances that the change comes from human activity.
According to Dmitry Yagodin, a postdoctoral researcher at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, there are clear indications that a growing number Russians actually believe that climate change is a natural phenomenon.
Everyone party… until we can’t…
Investors Ignored PG&E Warning About Disasters
PG&E Corp. told investors repeatedly that weather-related disasters were a risk, but many didn’t pay enough attention until the company was on the brink of bankruptcy.
The company included warnings in its regulatory filings and offering prospectuses citing how disasters like wildfires, droughts and floods, could weigh on its results or disrupt its operations. But until mid-November, the company’s bonds were trading above face value, even those due decades from now, implying that money managers thought those risks were manageable.
[…]
“A lot of people think climate change risk is so far in the future that it’s not going to affect the bonds, but then you have something like this,” said Jens Peers, U.S. chief investment officer of Natixis Investment Managers’ Mirova sustainable investing division, which oversees about $10.7 billion in assets. Mirova was already steering clear of PG&E in part because of the 2010 San Bruno gas pipeline explosion, where it was found guilty of safety violations.

Trump and his minions are bad in every way:
On a mission from God: Pompeo messages evangelicals from the Middle East
“This trip is especially meaningful for me as an evangelical Christian, coming so soon after the Coptic Church’s Christmas celebrations. This is an important time. We’re all children of Abraham: Christians, Muslims, Jews. In my office, I keep a Bible open on my desk to remind me of God and His Word, and The Truth.”
He added that he was in Cairo to herald another truth, that America was a “force for good” in the Middle East.
Pompeo then proceeded to rip into former president Barack Obama, who some fringe evangelists have accused of being a secret Muslim and even the Antichrist. The secretary of state used his speech to air domestic grievances, blaming Obama for the rise of Islamic State (ISIS) and the empowerment of Iran.
[…]
Years before assuming the office of secretary of state, Pompeo told attendees at a rally in his native Kansas that it was not only a right, but a duty for Christians to combine their faith with service to the country.
Politics, he said, “is a never-ending struggle … until the Rapture.” The Rapture being the belief among many evangelical Christians that believers and the resurrected dead will rise up to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ.

re: #153 freetoken
People are dumb. They have no idea what is actually required to put food on grocery store shelves. Disinfectants, pesticides, herbicides, etc are needed to mass produce foods of all types. Period. Even “organic” foods have to do these things, they just sometimes use different stuff than non organic (organic is an advertising scam mostly anyway, another layer to this dumb onion). Raising livestock and poultry without antibiotics and other medicines and dietary supplements is also not possible for many reasons, disease being a big one. It’s the reality of feeding lots of people with limited resources and maximum profits.
I’ve been growing food since I was a kid. I don’t use much in the way of chemicals. As a result I lose some of my crop each year to fungus and pests and the like. There really isn’t a way to do full on organic like people dream about without so much labor and other expenses food would become unaffordable.

Six reactors there will generate 50 billion kilowatt-hours per year to quench the province’s thirst for electricity.
The 120 billion yuan (US$17.74 billion) megaproject, to be run by the state-owned China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN), will bring the total number of nuclear reactors in Guangdong, a manufacturing powerhouse and China’s largest provincial economy, to 26.
CGN’s ultimate plan is to boost that number to 46, spanning 11 plants, to power Guangdong’s booming economy, whose gross domestic product in 2018 is tipped to hit the 10-trillion-yuan mark and surpass South Korea and Canada.

Screw the media and the fuckers who attack Gillibrand when she came out against Franken after the allegations of his harassment/groping surfaced. Screw ‘em when they’re attacking her for that once again now that she threw her hat in the ring.
The misogyny remains strong among the media class (in part because the media is run by a bunch of guys who are up to their eyeballs in abuse, harassment, etc. as we witnessed over the past few years). Any woman running for office has to deal with all the typical political BS, but also the institutional misogyny and attacks that they’re not good enough to deal with issues. We saw it with Clinton repeatedly but that was always projection - Trump was the one who lacks stamina, knowledge, understanding, and as it turns out, Trump was the compromised complicit Putin crony who was properly under investigation for fear of his being a foreign agent.
The GOP proudly elected him and voted for him because he was a bigot and misogynist. They still support him because he’s a proud bigot and misogynist and doesn’t apologize for any of it. That goes to the core of the GOP brand - they’re racist bigots and only act when someone is just a wee bit too open about their white supremacist/white nationalist objectives. They threw King under the bus in the hopes of this going away, but as we see the GOP is still down with meeting with Holocaust denying white supremacist scumbag Rage Furby, Scalise is white supremacist curious in a leadership post, and Trump is instituting a white supremacist’s wet dream on immigration policy by trying to keep out the nonwhites from the US and forcing nonwhites to the back of the bus (and out of the country).

Everywhere you look, you see Trump/GOP actively ignoring the US Constitution. It wasn’t just the Emoluments. It was everything. They simply ignored it because they wanted to maximize harms to their political enemies. They ignored their oaths of office to protect and defend the Constitution.
They engaged in impeachable offenses. The IG at the GSA noted that the GSA lawyers ignored the Constitution by giving a thumbs up for Trump to violate federal law and the Constitution. That’s bugnuts insane, as it means those lawyers who approved the deal violated their own obligations as officers of the courts - and should be disbarred.
That one instance alone is a huge scandal. But in the scheme of Trumpworld, it’s a back seat item to every other insane bit of creeping GOP fascism.

A “sovereign Brexit” would provide tremendous impetus to a US-UK free trade agreement, advancing economic freedom on both sides of the Atlantic and further enhancing the Special Relationship between the world’s largest and fifth largest economies. Such a deal already enjoys strong support from the Trump administration and on Capitol Hill. It could be in place by the end of 2019.
Note there is no evidence given for any claim that Brexit is good for the US. It’s just declared.

This is a lie. Schumer did not call for Comey’s firing. Before Trump was president, Schumer said, re Comey and Clinton, “I do not have confidence in him any longer…To restore my faith, I am going to have to sit down and talk to him and get an explanation for why he did this.” pic.twitter.com/2GW1iWGehd

Implication that Schumer is tied to a woman’s apron strings, I think. (Plus the continuing garbage about Schumer the soft and yielding, because as the most prominent member of the minority he made some deals that weren’t very favorable to the Dems, rather than stand unyielding and get nothing.)

Brexit isn’t good for the US, let alone the UK.
Brexit means another set of deals that we’d have to negotiate and would likely result in something that tries to approximate the EU-US trade deal. There’s lots of wishful thinking of what it does for the US.
We know for a fact that Brexit will suck for the UK. It’s indisputable at this point that it will result in less economic growth because all the trade barriers that didn’t exist with the EU are suddenly now there.
My favorite fact in this terrific story is that the CIO of Liberty University had a side gig rigging online polls. Sounds very Christian.

Pelosi is leading the way because she has power and all the cards. Schumer has no real power but he’s standing firm alongside her and refusing to yield, shocking the hell out of all of us.
Reading between the lines, Trump’s upset that his Ann Coulter’s grand plan of making the Democrats cave is failing bigly. Insulting Schumer is evidence he has nothing left, and even this isn’t going to help.

Judging by Ann going off the deep end last night, it has to be happening. But even then, I don’t know how you can spin such a catastrophic failure as a win.
If they can’t crack through his ego and/or Mitch falls to give up his long-lost war, then the GOP senate is going to look forward to another week of damaging news, imploding polls and messaging/narratives solidly against them, followed by another round of missing paychecks. Then it’s going to get really ugly for them.

That argument didn’t fly when the prosecutor was… checks notes…. Rudy Giuliani or… checks notes…. Chris Christie.
Both prosecuted mobsters and nailed the top of the food chain for the acts by those underlings because that’s how conspiracies work. The top guy didn’t have to know every detail - only that they were furthering the goal set by the top guy.
In this case, Trump not only conspired with the underlings, but he was actively involved at every step.
So yeah, these are impeachable high crimes (there isn’t a goddamned misdemeanor in the entire bunch). We aren’t talking blowjobs or affairs. We’re talking money laundering, conspiring against the US, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, Emoluments Clause violations, more conspiracy, witness tampering, and more conspiracy.
There’s a reason Mueller can’t complete the report - because Trump’s adding to the goddamned list of crimes by the day.
On the Emoluments alone, he was engaging in an ongoing violation of his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution which explicitly prohibits Emoluments. Trump sought out deals even while he was running for office with the Russians. He refused to separate from his businesses, and brought in his family that likewise refused to separate from his businesses. All of them are complicit, compromised, and criminal.
And those who didn’t directly act in a criminal fashion knew that the crimes were being committed and did nothing - that makes their violations of their oaths also impeachable - here’s looking at you Pence, McConnell, and Ryan (who has since fled Congress for a refuge in the private sector after getting the billionaire class the tax scam cuts they’ve wanted).

We know for a fact that Brexit will suck for the UK. It’s indisputable at this point that it will result in less economic growth because all the trade barriers that didn’t exist with the EU are suddenly now there.
Even leaving aside the “wishful thinking” issue (IMO a major component of the whole Brexit scam), has anyone actually seen/heard/read of any concrete proposals for any of these supposedly beneficial “deals”?
Outside of the usual blinkered British insularity and xenophobia (the main movers of “Leave”, IMHO), there was always a more-or-less unquestioned assumption in the process that, once free of “Euro overregulation”, the UK would be able to leverage its newly-regained “sovereignty” to negotiate all sorts of advantageous trade agreements which would lead to some sort of New Golden Age of prosperity and power. Though exactly how they were supposed to manage this in the world economy of 2019 seems to have been one of those “details to be worked out later” things. Which now that it finallly actually is “later”, still AFAICT, unresolved.

Underwood has people killed. Trump, AFAIK, has not yet resorted to murder.
On the other hand, the policy of separating children from (brown) families as a punishment to try to prevent the legal activity of claiming asylum is a crime against humanity.
So he’s got that going for him.
the streak goes on:
yesterday was day 85 (my previous max)
today is the 86th day in a row i’ve done a run. i am past the pole and on the other side.
when i ran those 85, i clocked about 480 miles. these 85 came in at around 710 miles.
i almost lost it today and once again was faced with the obsessive nature and bad decision making that comes with chasing meaningless stats.
post- dopey and marathons in general, the body’s immune system is a bit weak. Add to that being around all those with the flu and stuff, something hit me last night. feels more like a cold though
i went to bed certain that i wouldn’t run and i was fine with it because i just hit the 85.
it would have been a sad way to end while i’d be released from this particular mania
well 11 hours of sleep will change an attitude, so i went out for 6 and managed to actually do 6. flat, nice and easy. (the legs are still rebelling)
could happen again tomorrow. i could get worse. of course now i’m on the total other side plus one day, so it’s a new PR. One second, one day, doesn’t matter. besides, what does it mean anyway?
when you (I?) near the cusp of breaking through it becomes the focus. If this was 20 days ago; meh. and a few more days forward and still meh.
a tad short and arrrggggghhhh ….*so* close
and just a day or so over the line - is well arent you tough enough to keep going?
this is all just meaningless nutso neurosis banging around in the my brain.
eventually i will miss a day. from injury, scheduling, illness, the day after an all out race effort, or whatever; not from inability.
then i will be free to stop thinking about this. i won’t start counting again at one.

Trump’s at the Pentagon, and when he’s now spewing about the wall, and made passing comment about the death of four servicemembers in Syria, he’s talking about how he wants money to pay for space-based missile defense.
That’s a black hole of spending that defense contractors are going to love, like former Boeing exec and now Defense Secretary wants. They’ll never have to actually deliver either.
UPDATE:
The incomparable Daniel Dale is there fact checking Trump’s sorry ass:
At the Pentagon officially to speak about the Missile Defense Review, Trump returns to his pitch for a border wall. He blames Democrats for the shutdown, claims the party has been taken over by the “radical left,” and warns of new caravans that include unknown people.

Bingo.
I’ve always thought, ever since the Brexit referendum campaign started in earnest, that an unspoken expectation of the end result (and it wasn’t always unspoken), was that - to pick a date - March 29, 2019 would be followed by March 30, 1910, and that Britain, finally unshackled from those dirty Euro foreigners, could only then begin to reclaim its rightful superpower status of “globe-girdling Empire”.
Though, as I pointed out above, the details of how this was to be accomplished were, and still are, somewhat vague. Though I have a feeling that the first step will likely involve a massive PR campaign: Cambridge Analytica style…

Yes, by all means, let’s get the truth out there. Make sure we also talk about how the GOP couldn’t/didn’t/wouldn’t get support for the wall when they had complete control of the gov’t. Do not forget that Dems offered wall funding in exchange for DACA protection, but Trump said no. Let’s ensure that we mention that Trump literally said that Mexico would issue a direct payment for the wall and not some indirect payment bullshit from a treaty that hasn’t even been ratified yet. Lastly, don’t forget the fact that there was no wall emergency until approximately a week before the new Congress was getting sworn in.

And posted a video where she absolutely neither explicitly or implicitly said this. She said Graham was compromised because of financial issues (and a couple other possibilities) but the 180 degree whiplash support for trump showed he was compromised.
And this guy posts this bullshit and then, two tweets down in his thread, says this:
Yes, Rep. Omar hasn’t explicitly said Graham’s sexuality is the blackmail being used against him. But as everyone in D.C. knows, this is the rumor circulated about Graham, so saying he’s “compromised” achieves this purpose. No reason to give her a pass for dog whistling.

re: #386 lawhawk
what I suspect we’re going to find is the bottom of the rabbit hole… all of the worst case, “you gotta be shitting me” suspicions come true…
election fraud… hacking of actual votes, not counting of votes for Democratic candidates, over counting of GOP votes, illegal voter suppression and how that happened due to….
actual cooperation and coordination of an election campaign with a foreign government intelligence agency.
You can call it treason but despite the nicety that we have no declared war on the table, I believe it could be a “de facto” one.
That’s what I think is coming…
Which leads to a Constitutional crisis being full front and center (despite all of the other Trump distractions) and the question as if we, as a nation, can survive it.
And here they do it again.

You can call it treason but despite the nicety that we have no declared war on the table, I believe it could be a “de facto” one.
Russian activities in the election cycle could be considered an act of war causing a state of war to exist. The other option would be to tie in the fact that the US and RF are on opposite sides of the Syrian civil war which would also be a defacto war for which treason charges (aiding and abetting the Russian Federation) could be laid.
re: #394 piratedan
It’s not technically treason, since we don’t have a war declared. It isn’t sedition either.
It is, however, Conspiracy Against the United States - 18 USC 371. Federal felony.
That will suffice.
And for all the right wing blather about how collusion isn’t a crime, 18 USC 371 covers “collusion” quite well. The colloquial “collusion” is a catchall for all the kinds of acts Trumpworld engaged in to try and win in 2016 with the help of foreign powers. Everywhere we look in Trumpworld, we see unregistered foreign agents furthering an agenda that is antithetical to the US. Trump was greenlighting all of this, which makes him front and center in the conspiracy. He was sending his underlings out to talk to all these unsavory characters and publicly sought out Russia’s assistance in going after Hillary. So yeah, 18 USC 371 applies.
A conspiracy can be public knowledge and still be a felony.
It’s pretty amazing how the comments go from “Dick Morris is a toe-sucking ghoul” to “Matt Gertz, you shouldn’t bring attention to something that will cause the Fosters more suffering” to “Matt Gaetz, go drink your lunch and focus on your constituents.”
I’ll bet MMFA’s Matt Gertz sees this evolution in most of the comments.

re: #411 Charles Johnson
Trump doesn’t care what anyone tells him. He only listens to what he wants. He ignores anyone telling him things that run counter to his addled worldview. He’s a reactionary know nothing.
The Pentagon (and all the government frankly) needs someone in charge who is rational, is willing to accept facts and new information. They need someone who will not only listen, but will understand and change their position based on new information.
Trump doesn’t pass the core competency requirements - but that’s fine for the GOP, that sees the shutdown as a net positive right now because they think this will ultimately shrink size of government.
This is a shitshow, and talking about whether Trump can or should be impeached is past due.
The House can submit articles of impeachment, and it would pass the House. It’d pass on partisan terms, but then again, impeachment is a political tool. It would then be on the Senate to conduct the trial to remove Trump from office. It’d be on them to physically remove him from office. That’s where things get dicey for Trump and the GOP.
Each passing day sees more complicity and criminality revealed about Trump, his underlings, and everyone associated with the campaign and his admin. Articles of impeachment could run as long as a list of all prior scandals by every prior administration combined, and we’d be scratching the surface here. This admin is like taking everything from Teapot Dome, Watergate, Iran Contra, and Clinton-Lewinsky, combining it together - multiplying it a few times, and adding in conspiracy against the US with unregistered foreign agents and foreign powers like Russia and Turkey and spitting out an indictment sheet that runs on for chapters.
It needs to happen. The government is at a breaking point - and that too is what the GOP has sought, which is why they’re in no rush to reopen government.

Let’s be absolutely clear - Trump has never even sniffed being above water in the polls. But the GOP continues backing the fucker, because he’s doing what they think benefits them.
The whole party has a death wish. They have to be aware that they are absolutely killing themselves and destroying any hope of electability in the future beyond a shrinking base unmoved by things like, I dunno, facts. The shutdown shitshow, and the resounding unpopularity of it, combined with the Democrats winning the battle in every possible aspect, only sped up the process.
The GOP sees — they have to see! — that their future is looking dimmer by the day, as scandal after scandal against their leader keeps emerging, a “leader” they wed themselves to and is now bent on taking them down with him. They see that the vast majority of people tired of their lies is growing and are further emboldened and strengthened by people who aren’t backing down to their level. They see his base of support is crumbling.
They are arrested to the fate of the Whigs in the 1850s, a party that imploded in quick and resounding fashion. Those forever red states will be left further and further behind from the rest of the states and the country at large that have to pick up the pieces of the GOP’s destruction.
The party leadership is now conducting the orchestra as the ship is sinking. Some of the compositions are Russian in origin, obviously.
