A notorious white nationalist podcaster with a history of instigating harassment campaigns and threats of violence against reporters is in fact a journalist himself, Hatewatch has learned.

A 49-year-old man named Norman Asa Garrison III, who has written under the byline Trey Garrison for publications like The Dallas Morning News, D Magazine and Reason

There must be some mistake! I mean Reason would never associate with white nationalists and their ilk.

Oh wait. Nevermind.

The Foreign Affairs Chair and Armed Forces Chair were part of the trip. As is customary, the ranking members of the minority party are always included on such trips.

Because the House Speaker was going, it would be customary for the minority leader to also go.

Michael Isikoff on Rachel was shooting the Buzzfeed story up pretty good. He’s upset with the story and thinks it hurts Mueller which is why Mueller’s people worded their statement as they did.

And he said we should have just stuck with what Mueller already got Cohen to admit to as far as lying about helping Trump, but more as a lackey buddy than a direction.

So…not looking good on the initial story.

Did someone float some BS Buzzfeeds way to get them to bite? Then use it to make everyone look bad. Anyone smell anything kind of rotten?

You do need some legal jurisprudence here though other than your and I get it completely bias against right wing judges.

The wall of separation of church and state isn’t gong to come down with a nuke. It will come down, chip by chip, a little at a time.

Numerous public schools are already teaching the Bible as fact, with several lawsuits going. Every time one is knocked down, another comes up.

Schools teaching abstinence-only education (an explicitly Christian viewpoint) have had their teaching upheld.

Roe v Wade is having similar problems. Originally abortion was legal until the end of the second trimester, that keeps getting chipped away by states, along with continued attempts to define a fertilised egg as a person. Women have gone to jail over so-called foetal homicide laws.

Tennessee has an “official Bible.” Oklahoma’s and Arkansas’s Ten Commandments monuments remain on the capital grounds despite court challenges (and people running them over).

The history of the USA all the way back to the colonies is replete with religions trying to assert supremacy over government, usually with the aid of elected officials.

Again give me some legal jurisprudence showing that they’d ban a religion entirely. I am seeing evidence of favoring Christianity but that’s different than allowing states to outright ban a religion.

You may recall a discussion I had here with a Muslim who Mr. Johnson has now removed. He was concerned about a mosque in North Platte being unable to expand its parking lot on its own land due to interference by the city council.

So I went researching that for him, and over four years the city council tried to use zoning laws to prevent the mosque from expanding the lot. Locals were concerned about traffic (read Muslims).

It was a harassment campaign against the mosque which ended in favour of the mosque, but took four years to resolve. Federal law is clear you cannot use zoning laws against any house of worship, and the city government simply did not care.

Yes they lost. They cost the mosque and the taxpayers millions between them, simply to enforce a restriction on their parking lot (and by extension their religion).

The point of all these “religious freedom” cases is not that they all seem fruitless. The point is harassment, and the brass ring that one gets through.

I notice you haven’t addressed the idea that corporations have religions they can impose on their workers yet.

Okay. Fair enough but I’m saying this. They will need jurisprudence to do it. As for absistence only. I assume they’re using common law to upheld its legality. I think A only is bullshit but I don’t see a legal way to prohibit it. The way I see is to get comprehensive sex implemented through the legislature and ballot box and cut me some slack. The NFL player’s association, in last year’s contract negotiations, got the league to cough up a bunch of money for the players to do political advocacy. The players spent 2018, instead of endorsing candidates for governor or senator, got involved in DA races in their cities.

philanthropyplaymakers.com

this forum was one in a series hosted in five different cities across the U.S. by members of the Players Coalition. The local district attorney races in 2018 have been a focal point for NFL players, since DAs control who is charged with crimes and how the person is punished.

According to Jenny Vrentas, “the three Patriots spent a week brainstorming questions about mass incarceration, the juvenile system, immigration and police-community relations. They encouraged the audience members to educate themselves and cast their vote—‘helping communities understand how they can help themselves,’ McCourty said.

It’s a really fucking smart approach. When I saw one of the players talking about it on the Daily Show, I slapped myself for not thinking of it first.

Malcolm Jenkins - Leading the Philadelphia Eagles | The Daily Show

nbcphiladelphia.com

Malcolm Jenkins, inspired by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s election victory last year, is expanding his activism to district attorney races in California.

The star safety on the Super Bowl-champion Eagles told NBC10 in an interview that his appearance moderating public discussions in Sacramento Thursday and in Oakland Friday are the initial stops of what will become a prolonged effort to highlight how important district attorneys are to criminal justice reform.

“Everyone in this reform battle is realizing this is a place where we can quickly see change,” Jenkins said by phone from Oakland. “In California, DAs are being elected in Oakland, San Diego and Sacramento. This is an opportunity to start here and push that reform across the country. We’ve seen the fruits of that in Philadelphia.”

171
ckkatz  Jan 18, 2019 • 8:33:50pm

My takeaway from the SCO denial based upon discussion on Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell -

1. They did not deny the core of the argument that Trump in some way had prior knowledge and likely encouraged Cohen to lie to Congress. But better source is the SCO charging documents on Cohen.

2. They did appear to deny that the Buzzfeed descriptions of the evidence held by the SCO on Trump’s guilt are accurate.

(Ronnen Farrow seemed to imply something similar, iirc. He dropped his work on this storyline, because some of the details presented by the Buzzfeed story were denied emphatically by one of his sources.)

3. Possible SCO agenda -
a. They do not have the evidence for “Beyond a reasonable doubt”
b. They did not want to tip their hand on future prosecutions.
c. They are concerned that this might start an Impeach Trump movement prematurely.
d. The 22 hour delay might have been due to identifying the leaks, verifying that the leaks did not come from their office, and (I would guess are) probably taking actions against the leakers..

American anchor for Iranian TV is arrested on visit to US (caution for autoplay video with crappy music, goes to Yahoo News, more at the link):

A prominent American anchorwoman on Iranian state television has been arrested by the FBI during a visit to the U.S., the broadcaster reported Wednesday, and her son said she was being held in a prison, apparently as a material witness.

Marzieh Hashemi, who worked for the network’s English-language service, was detained in St. Louis, where she had filmed a Black Lives Matter documentary after visiting relatives in the New Orleans area. She was then taken to Washington, according to her elder son, Hossein Hashemi.

The FBI said in an email that it had no comment on the arrest of the woman who was born Melanie Franklin in New Orleans and has worked for Iran’s state television network for 25 years.

Hossein Hashemi said his mother lives in Tehran and comes back to this country about once a year to see her family, usually scheduling documentary work somewhere in the U.S. as well.

“We still have no idea what’s going on,” said Hashemi, a research fellow at the University of Colorado who was interviewed by phone from Washington. He also said he and his siblings had been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury.

I guess for me it seems the devil is in the details on the Buzzfeed story, so if we parse the special council’s comment on the story, they don’t say that the story is inaccurate, but rather their investigation is showing that the sources referenced in the buzzfeed story are not accurate, not that essence of the story isn’t true, just that their sourcing doesn’t jibe with the sources that the SCO is referencing or that the SCO also has those sources that Buzzfeed is referring to and the context of what is being referenced isn’t accurate.

The SCO is NOT saying that Cohen wasn’t instructed by Trump to lie in his testimony, just that the sources referenced by Buzzfeed don’t say that.

It’s like Buzzfeed received an update from their anonymous sources (say the SDNY) indicating that Trump did instruct Cohen to lie, but SDNY is trying not to be the source, so they asked Buzzfeed to throw shade. The problem is, the shade thrown implicates the SCO as the source and the SCO ain’t having any of that tyvm.

So the SCO is busy doing their part to keep any flies from landing on them, Buzzfeed has a big fat juicy that is true in subject matter, but the dots they are using don’t match the picture presented.

Wierdly, I think I’m okay with that and am in ‘truth will out” mode as I expect that dots WILL be connected, and bad guys will be hung out to dry, but we’re in legal grammar nazi mode right now and I believe that Mueller is very much in the “if you come at the King, best not miss” modus operandi.

Yup, that is my understanding as well.

The basic storyline is not denied. And everybody is assuming that the facts the SCO set up with Cohen pleading guilty to lying to Congress are still in place for when they are ready to prosecute others.

As you note, they are probably protecting their reputation for not saying anything. And they are probably suggesting that nobody take any actions under some assumption about the what the SCO knows or is going to do.

Likely, this is going to push the House to increase their investigations into this area as well. Remembering that the House doesn’t need to overcome the barrier of “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt”.

E-mail from the Nebraska Democratic Party chairwoman. Note toward the end about Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE2, Omaha and South Sioux City). That goes back to the idea I had yesterday of throwing the Democratic Convention in Omaha.

If you missed Gov. Pete Ricketts’ State of the State Address, you didn’t miss much.

Ricketts said nothing bold, said nothing about Trump’s tariffs hurting farmers and said nothing about the unnecessary shutdown hurting government workers.

He did say his proposed budget would fund Medicaid expansion, which was approved by voters because of the efforts by many grassroots Democrats. We are keeping an eye on Ricketts — since he often says one thing and does another.

Meanwhile, Rep. Don Bacon tried to distance himself from all of his previous endorsements of Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who is finally being rebuked for his comments on white nationalism.

Bacon actually thought deleting the old pages on his website of endorsements from King would make the issue go away — but we know the only way we stop this endless and reckless behavior is to elect a strong Democrat to do the work of the people.

Back for one more thing, just to throw more bizarre on the day:

Exclusive: Kimberly Guilfoyle Left Fox News After Investigation Into Misconduct Allegations, Sources Say (Goes to Huffington Post, more at the link):

Guilfoyle’s departure was initially billed as her decision. However, as HuffPost first reported last week, multiple sources said she did not leave the network voluntarily. They said Guilfoyle was informed her time at Fox News was up following a human resources investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior including sexual misconduct, and that her lawyers had been involved since the spring. Sources also said that despite being told she would have to leave by July, Guilfoyle repeatedly attempted to delay her exit and tried to have her allies appeal to Rupert Murdoch, the executive chairman of 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News, to let her stay at the network.

This story is based on interviews conducted over the past year with 21 sources inside and outside Fox News and 21st Century Fox. All sources spoke to HuffPost on the condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to speak to the press, did not want to raise Guilfoyle’s ire or have signed nondisclosure agreements that prevent them from speaking to others about their experiences.

FOX is a cesspool.

My paternal grandfather was born before Lincoln was elected president. My parents were born just as WWI began.

Speaking of Arthur, I wonder if he is where the Republican party started to go wrong. When I come across his statements the more than a little bit harbor xenophobia.

Way back in ‘81, the fear in America over immigrants was not from Mexico, but from….

Negotiations have been opened with Switzerland looking to a settlement by treaty of the question whether its citizens can renounce their allegiance and become citizens of the United States without obtaining the consent of the Swiss Government.

I am glad to inform you that the immigration of paupers and criminals from certain of the Cantons of Switzerland has substantially ceased and is no longer sanctioned by the authorities.

Xenophobia was pretty rampant during that part of American history. Seems the people who got there first were worried about the millions of immigrants coming in the late 19th and early 20th century. Fear was one reason for the IQ tests given (in English) to immigrants to thin the herd, as it were. It’s a recurring pattern.

But his uncle and family followed not long after. And I know he still spoke German since I have a 1936 letter he wrote to Germany on behalf of his brother who had died suddenly. The most sad thing for me is when the descendants of those immigrants forget their mistreatments and then engage in it themselves. Some of the ugliest bigots to Chinese immigrants were Irish immigrants. I also remember reading about a chapter of the KKK in Worcester, Ma comprised of Swedish immigrants hostile to Catholics.

re: #132 Anymouse 🌹

I notice you haven’t addressed the idea that corporations have religions they can impose on their workers yet.

it is unfortunate and true that no one (in this country) has a right not to be accused criminally, or sued civilly

people with power (the cop who pulls you over, the zealous ada, the city council, the guy who rear-ended you) can drag you over that line and into the system

then you must work with its rules

once ‘cleared’, sometimes there are mechanisms for false arrest, prosecution, frivolous lawsuits, etc. othertimes not, and it sux.

cf all those people who own land on the border, living their lives mostly quietly minding their own business. they are gonna lose their land unless they find some money and fight. they may lose, they may win. if they win, doubtful they’ll get their costs back.

Clinton was impeached for lying under oath — not for the underlying non-crime of a consensual relationship with an adult woman. Trump’s attorneys have figured that as long as he doesn’t testify under oath, he’s free.

As to the Michael Cohen allegations, crime bosses don’t have to tell their underlings exactly what to do. Trump didn’t have to say explicitly: lie under oath. Michael knew that he was never supposed to contradict Trump’s statements.

re: #343 Hecuba’s daughter

Clinton was impeached for lying under oath — not for the underlying non-crime of a consensual relationship with an adult woman. Trump’s attorneys have figured that as long as he doesn’t testify under oath, he’s free.

As to the Michael Cohen allegations, crime bosses don’t have to tell their underlings exactly what to do. Trump didn’t have to say explicitly: lie under oath. Michael knew that he was never supposed to contradict Trump’s statements.

Which is what Kurt Eichenwald is sort of saying in his tweet thread Barefoot Grin posted in #292. Cohen was a foot soldier protecting his leader. He thought he needed to lie because he was directed to lie before in the Trump Affairs Pay-Off.

There will be much denial from Trump of course. I think John Gotti denied a lot of his connections too. Mueller’s FBI took care of that.

No need to complicate the issue.

Even without faith we all realize, on some basic level, that innocent lives should be protected.

Declaring that a fetus doesn’t qualify as a life may make the practice more tolerable to you, but it doesn’t make the reality any less tragic.

isnt now and never has been the issue

the issue is when, in the seamless progression from fertilization to birth, it ‘becomes’ a
single, discrete human life with constitutional rights and protections

And when does that fetus who can’t live outside the mother’s womb have its rights on par with the mother’s rights to determine what she wants to do with her pregnancy. TBH abortion is a messy issue but the biggest issue I have is the anti abortion movement is full of men like Shapiro who will never experience pregnancy telling women what to do.

a fetus does have legal rights — for example, it may be an heir with its own representation in probate court. Its lawyer may be different than the lawyer representing the woman in whose body it currently resides.

What it doesn’t have, what no person (born or unborn) has any right to, is SOMEBODY ELSE’S internal organs. Somebody else’s blood, the calcium in somebody else’s bones. Even a corpse has the right not to have its parts taken for somebody else’s benefit.

IMO, they should secure all the rights for DACA recipients they can, and whatever immigration improvements they can, and take it. The odds are that whatever wall he wants to be built will be tied up in legal battles until long after he is gone.

And then they should thank him and his team for talking themselves down from $20B last year to $6B this year. Much better for the budget.

There is already all the wall there can ever be that does any good. The wall is not really a wall against Mexican illegal immigration. It’s a wall perfectly designed to box in those of us with any empathy for other than white wealthy people. More politics than practical. more powerful in white separatist territory and the heartless heartland than a nuke plant.

That is what his wall does with no steel, no concrete. Break down the wall.

Proof that Trump is truly pathetic, part the infinity.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. WaPo reporter, Dan Balz is dining in a Paris restaurant. A man (Joe Kernen of CNBC) sitting at the next table hands him a cellphone and asks if he wants to talk with the President. Trump was supposed to do an interview with Kernen at DAVOS and called to express his disappointment that the shutdown cancelled the interview. Kernen told Trump that people in Paris were saying good things about him, and apparently, Trump asked to talk to one of his supporters.

When Balz took the phone, Trump didn’t know he was talking to a reporter. Balz tried to ask him some questions to get a newsworthy response. Sensing that he wasn’t talking to a Trumpbot, Trump asked Balz if he was a Trump or Hilary supporter. Balz revealed that he was a reporter. At this point, Balz heard other people laughing and realized he was on speakerphone. The call lasted about 2 minutes and ended when Kernen wanted his phone and the call back.

The problem with Catholic schools these days is there are not enough old school nuns and priests involved in them as there used to be.

I can’t see the nuns and priests I had during the 60s and early 70s allowing that jerk to get in the face of the Native American like that. They would have walked right over to him and yanked him away giving him the what for in front of all his idiot friends.

Then when they all got back to school, they would have gotten an hour of detention every day for a week and had to write a 10 page report on why Native Americans deserve their respect.

Sure the Catholic Church has its issues, but they used to teach respect above all else. At least that was how it was done at my school in my time.

Of course, there are layers of shittiness to unpack here. It’s not just the fact that at this so-called “sophisticated” establishment, all unaccompanied, attractive women are unquestionably considered sex workers, it’s also the fact that there’s a “sex worker seating policy” in the first place. Shouldn’t a professional woman (in any field?) who can afford her meal be allowed to eat where she pleases?

The answer is yes - and it most definitely shouldn’t be here.

Heard there were some chants of “Build the Wall.”

I’m OK with shaming these twits in public; they made an ass of themselves in public, so they can do their penance in public.

Seriously? “Build the Wall” chanted at people whose ancestors have been here since before Stonehenge and Pyramids were built?

re: #501 Unshaken Defiance

Legally? Very unsure, it’s seating policy not a refusal to serve. Lawhawk, are you in da house?

But from every reasonable view, this is soaked through and through with what’s wrong with mens attitudes. About who sits at bars and why, about women in general and sex workers in particular.

I bet Nello serves a paleo diet menu, because that would be close to what a fucking caveman who runs the place would eat.

ULA Delta IV NROL-71 Live Launch Broadcast is live. 17 minutes to launch

Jan. 19 Delta IV NROL-71 Live Launch Broadcast - Begins 10:45 a.m. PST

“…I work at a university that was built on the site of a Catholic boarding school for Indians, where children were ripped from their families to learn white man’s ways and follow the Pope, and this is a history we earnestly feel here — we have reminders all over the school of that legacy. Seeing little Catholic assholes shitting all over other people fills me with anger.

And despair. Look at those faces. Someday you’ll see them again in Congress, and on the Supreme Court, and maybe even the presidency. Because that’s where they’re confident they deserve to go.”

lol Eric is 100% right, whatever Trump does at 3pm doesn’t change the fact that Pelosi and Schumer can unequivocally continue to call his bluff. They have and it’s hurting him bigly bad.

But it’s also the early stages of the media trying to help Trump mitigate an obvious defeat in the making, so it’s not unexpected.

Yeah, I know. And we discussed that here before too.

I guess Schumer is a wimp is now the default setting.

Republicans fight to the death to protect a scum like Trump.

Democrats talk shit about a decent man named Schumer.

Kind of like the image of the French as “surrender monkeys.”

A policy that lets men sit wherever they want but bars single women from sitting at the bar? Sounds illegal to me.

Yep, they have to save Mitch’s sorry ass too. And they know it. He’s blown it as badly as Trump has.

Yurtle has to find a way out that saves Trump’s face. He’s afraid of being primaried next year, and he can’t allow any daylight between himself and Trump.

They are just dying for any Democrat to suggest giving Trump some money for his damn wall so that they can run the “Democrats in disarray!” article you know they already have queued up.

Matt Bevin tried to primary Mitch in 2014. Don’t think he can’t/won’t do it again, especially after a few popular years of fucking up Kentucky as governor.

Yeah, but he adds some “rocket fan” element to the broadcast.

We’re in a hold, launch adjusted looks like 11:10 AM PT
