Even the Freepers are not taking this “offer” seriously, seeing it as little more than an attempt by Trump to try to get Dreamers and Latinos on his side. They don’t think he’s serious about this, that it’s nothing more than a political ploy and so they’re not freaking out about it.

Trump negotiated himself into a bag and can’t negotiate his way out. He thinks a deal that was rejected months ago is suddenly going to get him out of the mess of his own creation.

If that’s the strategy, they fucking failed. The Democrat senators can afford to reject this deal because DACA is a non-issue this year thanks to SCOTUS.

It’ll pass the Senate but the House can offer up what they’ve offered for eight times already, and it’ll pass.

This isn’t about negotiating anything, it’s about trying desperately to get Dems back on the defensive, which is how the GOP is used to dealing with them. Figuring either the bill passes and they get something for nothing, or it fails but they can spin the failure as the Dems choosing to sacrifice Dreamers to hurt Trump.

Schumer should call his ass on this by saying that, now that Mitch has moved away from his position that only bills that have been agreed to by both sides should be brought up to a vote, he needs to bring the House CR up for a vote. That he can’t hide behind “negotiations” any longer if he’ll put the WH’s bill to a vote without delay.

Are the Republican senators really going to vote on this, especially when the Freepers and Ann already are deeming the DACA move as “amnesty?” Cause *checks notes* the GOP is in the majority.

If they vote to do this and then get reamed by the hard right, they just took a poison pill and didn’t even know it.

Democratic senators will demand amendments, one of which will be to permanently provide legal status to Dreamers. It will be defeated, of course, at which point the Democratic senators will filibuster any senate bill.

Well, the hate-mongering from the Catholic Church students in Washington was disgusting, as are all the conservatives trying desperately to magic-balancefairy that.

The Catholic Church was the second-most genocidal group against Native Americans, after the US government. (You could argue it was the Spanish Crown, but they were driven by Catholicism.)

I see the Covington Diocese Website is overloaded (Error 524, timeout). I imagine their servers are in meltdown mode.

I eagerly await those who will say the Catholic Church is “no true Christians” as so often is said about Evangelicals.

The Catholic Church is one of the most rigid and structured oganisations in the world. I will be very surprised if the authorities of the Church do a damn thing about any of this; their whole “March for Life” issue is based on hate-mongering anyway.

The fundamental problem - and this is what Trump exploits - is that the rabidity of anti-abortion activity among America’s religious stems from the challenge that modernity brings.

In other words, if a zygote doesn’t have a “soul”, then perhaps there is no “soul”. If there is no such thing, then all the hellfire and damnation preaching of the religious fundamentalists become moot… and their religion falls apart.

There are deist/theist groups who may be fine without the old-fashioned notion of a soul-in-a-zygote, but they are few compared to the masses in America.

Instead, it’s only going to further erode their own defensive position because now their base is going to lose faith. They’ve been assured again and again that the Dems are “breaking,” that they want to make a deal but Nancy won’t allow them to do so, and that if they just held out a bit longer then they’d get their demands without paying anything. re: #188 freetoken

There are deist/theist groups who may be fine without the old-fashioned notion of a soul-in-a-zygote, but they are few compared to the masses in America.

this is a conversation about the seamless timeline from fertilization to delivery
there is no *earthly* reason why god had to pick one point in that timeline and the exact same one for every pregnancy to ‘insert’ the soul

Until well into the 19th century, people believed life began with the “quickening” or when a woman would feel the fetus move. Women fairly routinely took (abortifacient) herbs to bring on menses. Abortion being illegal in the US comes about with the professionalization of the medical field throughout the 19th century, and male doctors taking control of women’s health.

Whether credible or not, this sounds like straight up mail fraud, under US law.

It’s a joke.

I was mocking Trump fund raising as mentioned earlier. It’s like he could shoot someone out on 5th Avenue and not lose a vote. If he asks them to send him $20 for an email, they would and then vote for him.

(My second joke about Trump that misses. You can’t joke about Trump. Trump is the joke.)

Amazing how fast he went from one of his original campaign promises, that he would fund his campaign entirely himself.

Didn’t take him long to start asking for campaign donations, and his supporters went right along with that. It’s like that campaign promise never happened.

re: #278 Interesting Times

The thing about this is that we’ve got multiple investigations ongoing.

There’s Mueller’s investigation that requires Cohen testimony/evidence.
There’s the SDNY investigation that requires Cohen testimony/evidence.

SDNY got him on the charges that led to 3 years in prison. Mueller was arguing for a lesser sentence due to the assistance provided. That should signal to everyone that Mueller had gotten significant evidence needed against key Trump figures - up to and including Trump himself. Mueller needs to continue to protect Cohen and to limit what Cohen says in public before Mueller needs him under oath at a potential trial down the road.

SDNY leaks like a sieve, and is likely the source of the Cohen information.
Mueller is airtight and has been all along.

Mueller stepping up and trying to limit what Cohen said doesn’t discredit the Buzzfeed report, but it’s the context of who’s saying what that is important.

SDNY hasn’t denied the statements.

I saw a comment about that from a Native American. It was essentially “Don’t make us do the work of trying to change the perception of those who hate us by foisting them on us. That’s your work.”

I can 100% co-sign to this. Change can’t be forced. It has to happen naturally, and you have to allow it to happen.

Interesting

Attorney Chase Iron Eyes of the Lakota People’s Law Project witnessed the entire event and told CNN’s S.E. Cupp that the teens could face legal problems as a result of their actions.

“As an attorney, I felt that this qualified as the legal definition of assault,” Iron Eyes said. “They were causing an apprehension, an objective fear of offensive contact or harm.”

Serious question, do Mennonites vote at all?

Depends on the branch of Mennonites. The Amish, who are separate group, typically do not vote, AFAIK. I have known politically active Mennonites, so voting Mennonites are quite possible.

Jolly many times is on some of the MSNBC hours. I’ve seen him on Nicole Wallace’s show, and I think Lawrence has used him. He tries to come off as a sensible conservative distanced from his party. He’s a Republican.

Laura Loomer Storming The Stage At The Women’s March Almost As Cringey As The Time She Threw Herself At A Nazi. (Wonkette, more at the link):

World’s most embarrassing human person Laura Loomer has had a hell of a January. First, she fell for (and subsequently got the Wall Street Journal to fall for) a prank from Nathan Bernard and company convincing her that CAIR lobbied to have her kicked off of Twitter. Then she tried to break into Nancy Pelosi’s house and also get some immigrants deported in the process.

And today, she tried to storm the stage at the Women’s March and grab the mic in order to proclaim that the Women’s March was the REAL Nazi march.

It was almost as cringeworthy as the time she aggressively hit on a Nazi.

(video, thirty-eight seconds)

Loomer was swiftly brushed off by the speaker, who subsequently welcomed Jewish women to the march, at which point Loomer flailed her arms to and fro, furious that no one was taking her seriously. Which no one ever, ever will.
