My mom has a newspaper clipping from when she was a kid in the early sixties about my grandfather. A bird had hit the windshield of his car. He got out, grabbed it, took it home and nursed it until it was healthy enough to be released.

I had one swoop my car once travelling in the evening right along the woods in a state park. I could hear the flapping of the wings. They are powerful.
I saw it come down right from just left of the driver’s side front and even got a glimpse out the open sunroof as it passed over.
It may have been diving at some little critter on the side of the road and never saw you. Nothing you could do. Sometimes something like that can be bad for both.

My sister and I only reconciled fairly recently. She would not speak to me for over two decades. When she came out as LGBT, she assumed that since I was in the Navy at the time I therefore despised her.

You know, speaking as a public school graduate who went on field trips and a former high school teacher who has led them, that kind of behavior by the Covington boys would have been grounds to ship them back home or back to their hotel rooms. When I was in high school and touring Europe with the choir, we had one guy busted for getting drunk and he was shipped home at his parents’ expense the next day. When I was teaching, the rule we followed was to have one teacher/chaperone for every 10 students. So what were those kids’ chaperones doing to let some of them hassle an old man? As bad as the kids’ behavior was, their chaperones were being negligent in their duties and (as we now can see) have exposed their school to negative consequences, up to and including lawsuits. If I were a parent, I’d be asking some hard questions about who was in charge and whether they were doing their job. The kid was lucky someone didn’t clock him for being a smartass.
JFC the school is in a world of hurt now, deservedly so.

tRump is off to I’m A Logo on a government plane while Pelosi is flying commercial back to California after he denied her and Republican Representatives military transport to Brussels to discuss Brexit and then to Kabul to meet with generals on the ground to discuss the realities of the fight in Afghanistan.
Every policy proposal tRump has made publicly in the last week has fallen flat because they are untenable while the government is shut down.
Mitch the Turtle is going to advance the Dead On Arrival tRump plan for “Border Security” this week.
Meanwhile, 800,000 government employees and several million government contractors are not being paid, costing the economy billions of dollars every fucking day because real people can’t afford to buy food, heat their homes, and pay their mortgages.

Well, that describes a lot of churches.
They did start out okay, releasing a statement saying they would investigate. That’s reasonable because Twitterati trying to make IDs on students could be mistaken, and before you take disciplinary action against students, you want to make sure 2) they’re your students and 1) they have the correct students.
That said, locking down the corporate sponsor page is all about protecting the $$$ which is kind of a bad look for a church organisation.

Getting back on one of my recent soapboxes… the myriad of shows on HGTV (and their sister channel, DIY) are very misleading.
Example: “Texas Flip N Move” - first off, the name is misleading because the show is not about “flipping” a house like your local flipper does. Rather, it’s a salvage operation.
Secondly, it’s absurd. The premise of the show is that houses can be rescued by flippers. The problem is the moving of a built structure is very expensive. From what is on the show, it appears to me that they are costing out the moves at more than one would spend just framing a house anew, for the same size.
But the costs put on screen are not real. They are fabricated for the show.
And the math, if we can call it math, at the end of the show for determining the “profit” is ridiculous. The network uses the same formula across their various “flip” shows (e.g., Desert Flippers) shows, but it’s all a lie.
All of this is so diagnostic for deeper problems in America.
These shows are no more about reality than I Love Lucy.

I did not say it was fine to out juvenile rapists. If they are charged as adults, then yes. Legally, the media cannot identify juveniles who commit crimes. If we don’t identify kids who rob mini-marts or boost cars, we should not be ID-ing kids who harass people in a public setting. The school has been identified. Their teachers and administrators know who went on the trip and can recognize their faces. It is not the public’s job to identify these boys with the intent to harass them and their families, which is going to happen no matter what I say or think. I find it rather alarming that you are so cavalier about the safety of a kid, even if that kid is a junior asshole.

Right, I can’t imagine any conservative presidential candidate signing the Americans with Disabilities Act or Clean Air or valuing international cooperation as H.W Bush did in Desert Storm. I’m aware of the more negative aspects of his legacy which were discussed at length when he did last month but that’s the thing. And I’ve seen this on a state level too. Years ago I took PT. One of my therapists worked in sports medicine at a local rich kids school. She told me the kids would fine to school with thousands of dollars in cash in their wallets and they were, for a good number of them, shitty people.

I was thinking about some abstract concepts last night about how everything relates to everything in the end. Taxes ain’t any different. I very much subscribe to what Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said on taxes, “I like taxes, with them I buy civilization.” Like yeah I don’t like paying taxes in the sense that I like a fine meal or good book but in the end, I know paying taxes helps society function. The right has made the debate not about how much taxes we should be paying but whether we should be paying them at all and given their views on the military and national deefnse, that’s extremely stupid. You can’t want the most massive military in the world as I’m sure Kaitlin wants and insist taxation is theft.

High school is beyond old enough to know right from wrong. This school is a prime example of private schools not being at all superior to public schools. The shit about a “boys only advantage as a selling point to parents is nauseating.Part of me wants them exposed for being the privileged little shits that they are, part of me knows they’re stupid hateful kids and maybe someday they will grow the fuck up. The thing is, real life fuck ups can have permanent consequences and shielding kids from that does them no favors. The right answer is somewhere in the middle. They exposed who they are on video. Within their own community I’m sure they’re already known for being assholes. I’m for public shaming and shunning within their small little bubble. Like the local coffee shop owner telling them they won’t be served or the local auto repair place sending them away.
The thing is, when kids are never told no or shown consequences for actions, you end up with monsters. Like trump. Like a little girl I’m dealing with now who is adorable and no one has told her no. Til she met me. She’s 4 and is anorexic except for candy and cola. Her mom refuses to deny her anything. As a result I am dealing with a kid who won’t eat, won’t color or read stories or play with anything but paw patrol toys and who I cannot take anywhere because if I don’t buy her things she loses her shit and literally screams “stop hitting me!” in front of people. She does not do that in private.
Adults create monsters they are rarely held accountable for. Exposing school and parent involvement would be my approach in dealing with this shit.

Just dug out my side door. Nice drift between my house and the neighbors mainly up against my door. Then I made my way out to the front landing and the steps and sidewalk. Pretty deep drifts from the curb to the bank in front of my house. They said we got 1 to 3 inches overnight which wasn’t as much as predicted. A good thing. Had we gotten the 5 to 7 the drifts would have been a real problem.
A great way to exercise first thing in the morning. Let’s hope there is not too much more of this snow stuff.

I very much subscribe to what Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said on taxes, “I like taxes, with them I buy civilization.” Like yeah I don’t like paying taxes in the sense that I like a fine meal or good book but in the end, I know paying taxes helps society function. I have this memory of doing something to a basketball hoop. I don’t remember but my parents were pissed especially my Dad. I’ve probably brought this up before but one of my most guilty moments looking back on my childhood was being a jerk to the only other person on the spectrum I knew. Now I didn’t know I or both of us were at the time but I’m ashamed of that now. Thankfully she doesn’t hold it against me and we in fact became really good friends in middle school when I first started to feel truly different than the others and we’ve since reconnected on FB which again is another reason why I understand criticisms of the platform why I think it can do good but I don’t want to open that can of worms here again knowing how some feel on the subject.

She does not do that in private.
Adults create monsters they are rarely held accountable for. Exposing school and parent involvement would be my approach in dealing with this shit.

The big flaw in her “you’re acting like a mob” argument is that the same thing could be said about contacting the school, or contacting the businesses that support the school. It could be used against getting adults fired.

How do people ever get past others being human? Because humans make mistakes and often times can learn from them. And you learn form discussion.
But not when you shut them off. Not when you don’t allow them to say they are sorry. Not when you don’t allow them to show you they aren’t what you think. Not when you don’t listen because mind is made up.
It’s just sad. I don’t like sweeping generalizations. I don’t like closed minds. Why? Because they are never always correct in their assumptions. How do I know, I’ve done it too? And then I feel bad and open the mind back up to see what part I played, not others.
This all sort of fits the day I am going through. Cold. It leaves you cold.

1. Rod Dreher is far from stupid: which makes his simple-minded advocacy of simpleton theocracy as a the ideal model for society and government even worse: I think he knows better, but figures that his audience doesn’t.

The school was a private school, where parents were required to put in certain number of hours a term. One couple, with one child, bought a minivan so they could help with field trips (private school, no buses). The wife volunteered as an aide in Mrs. FBW’s room. They ferried kids to field trips and served as chaperones way more than required.
Another couple ‘chaperoned’ on a trip to a museum, and rather than staying with the group and, you know, chaperoning, went off with their daughter on their own all day. So, not only were they no help, but also the fact that we nominally had all the chaperones we needed meant nobody else volunteered so we were understaffed. Less than useless.
Unsurprisingly, that couple also came in to berate Mrs. FBW when their daughter got a B. But I guess I shouldn’t be so harsh. It’s because their younger daughter would have been in Mrs. FBW’s class the next year that we had The Older Boy when we did.

Sure big organized religions have their issues. But within them there can be good churches that do good things for their communities. And sometimes I see that as the real benefit of churches, they are community centers and help and protect their people.
And that is being said by a now non-practicing, fully-schooled Catholic. We had evil people at our church. Had a lot of good caring people too.

How can anyone seriously book Giuliani? His dissembling on Jake Tapper was painful to watch and even more painful to hear. His voice drives me up the wall. He sounds like an attorney for a mobster — and that’s exactly what he is.

I think parents should support their kids regardless. I am just as happy to cheer for a kid at a football game as I am to cheer for one at a Robotics Competition.

I’ve been to my fair share of Legos robotics tourneys with both of my kids. The atmosphere in middle school is hilarious. They have such a great time together. But remember to bring a good book or two. Now we’re on to a different style of robotics in high school. I’ll just say—there’s a lot of driving involved. But it’s fun for him. He does band and may even try out for the tennis team. Whatever. Life is short. And there aren’t do overs with your kids.

I’ve been to a serious robotics competition. Some of the schools had cheerleaders and some of the band in the stands. The organization was handing out earplugs.

Goodness comes from within. There are people whose lives and examples are something that theologians would laud but the person doesn’t happen to believe in God just as those who are terrible examples ut do believe in God. Religion is tricky. And it’s most of all most tough for me with the Catohlic Church because I have read and am aware of their good works but I’m also of their bad works.

I understand, but I think the media and fashion helped drive that side of things too. I can’t remember all of that period, but I think some of the Beatles left the Maharishi with less than glowing memories.
It was over before it became a thing, but the thing lasted.
Lennon wrote ‘Sexy Sadie’ about the Maharishi after he learned that the big spiritual dude was perving on a couple of women at the retreat.
In other news, I’m at LAX getting ready to fly back to NY. I had a great time out here, but I’m pretty worn out. Love this town, though.

Long story I’ll share sometime, but about 12 years ago while working as a magazine editor I and corresponded extensively with Rod and edited a column of his we published.
He’s not stupid. He’s Exhibit A of checking your brain and heart at the door in service to religious ideology. He’s a study in the dark side of the obedience to authority demanded by Orthodox Christianity.
Playing armchair psychologist, I think the political awakening of his teenagers is going to bring down his Jenga tower, along with the exposure of the great corruption that exists in the Orthodox Church globally.

There are so many variables. Is shedding an issue for you, what sort of climate do you live in, what kind of energy level are you looking for? I am personally a big fan of spitz type dogs(currently have a Norwegian elkhound). There are several smaller spitz breeds. The finnish spitz, norwegian buhund, shiba inu, american eskimo dogs. Most spitz breeds shed…a lot. They tend to be a little more on the independent side so if you are looking for a dog that is going to be constantly in your lap or looking for your attention some other breed may be better. For a shorter hair breed I like the basenji.
Unless you really want to search out a reputable breeder though, look at your local shelter and get a nice small to medium mutt. Hard to go wrong.

You can’t give credit for something that hasn’t been accomplished. The North Koreans are taking Trump to the cleaners. Everyone knows they’re accelerating their nuclear weapons program and missile programs. They don’t need to do the tests now that they confirmed their designs work. So Trump got a photo op and North Korea got the space it needed to build out a nuclear deterrent that prevents anyone from taking action against them.
Compare that with Iran, which was constrained under the JCPOA, and Trump’s doing all he can to screw that up - which would allow Iran to build its own nuclear deterrent.
And the Trump admin still isn’t spending the money that was originally appropriated for the wall. Upgrading a small section of the wall isn’t stopping the drug trade, which comes via ports of entry. It isn’t stopping visa overstays, which is a direct result of inadequate number of personnel to review and act on those visas.
Trump’s white nationalist base doesn’t care about any of it - and Trump regurgitates the right wing know nothings who tell Trump what he wants to hear.
