So few people these days have experience with old crafts like these.

I always laugh at the meme of Peyton winning the Superb Owl with Denver and Eli is on the phone, saying, “Dad? Yeah, it’s me, Eli. It’s not fair, Peyton won a second one, when do I get a second ring?!?!?”
Let’s dig into “gravitas,” bc it’s an ambiguous word, selectively applied.
Ever wonder how expression that’s feminine, working-class, queer, or poc isn’t deemed as having “gravitas,” but talking like an Aaron Sorkin character does? 🤔
Men have “gravitas,” women get “likeable.” https://t.co/0g9FNpExAl— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 20, 2019
It’s even worse than that, women are stuck in a Catch-22 situation where they can either be “likable” or “serious,” but are never allowed to be both. https://t.co/8DbsEDyWY7

Now, now, Seattle almost won against the Patriots. Then they decided, for some inexplicable reason, to call a passing play instead of handing it off to Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch for the inevitable win…

I was reading about the infamous Sinead O’Connor SNL incident. Man she took a lot of shit for that. I knew about that part. What I didn’t know about were the nasty remarks Sinatra and Pesci made towards her afterwards. And fucking Sinatra, a hypocrite playing devout Catholic while he had adultery and some abortions in the closet. But what I’m really getting at here is what I read Kris Kristofferson did for her. I don’t know Kristofferson that well even in his music. My biggest exposure to him was actually in the Blade movies with Wesley Snipes and knowing he was a Rhodes Scholar as well but knowing that he showed her support makes me really like him and want to give some of his tunes a listen.

Peyton is and always will be the GOAT to me. Tom Brady can suck his own dick (apologies for the crude analogy) - the only reason he survived as long as he has is because the NFL has given him their protection. Peyton survived in spite of it.

But speaking of good old Pittsburgh Irish. DD do you know the Mechanics Street Bridge which was renamed the 16th Street and I think recently the McCullough? Got some info from a cousin today indictating that third grandfather was an investor in the company that built it way back when. re: #5 HappyWarrior
What pisses me off is Mahomes has actually outplayed Brady.
the game boiled down to a KC defender lining offsides, something you would think would be impossible at the professional level. All you gotta do is look down the friggin line.
re: #89 HappyWarrior
Oh don’t get Bill started on baseball haha. I love baseball though. If my Orioles were to win a WS. I’d drink all the Natty Boh and eat all the Crab Cakes. Love the Steelers but my first love will always be the O’s.
It’s better than Belacheat.

Yep. And although that was the right cal, you hate that’s what turned the tide.

Look, he’s old, and he will undoubtedly retire, in Peyton Manning’s shadow (thank God). But I have no faith that anyone on this Earth can stand up to the untouchable image that he has projected for the last two decades.
Just wait until Trevor Lawrence comes into the league. That kid will be an unreal talent.

The Twins went from a playoff berth to division cellar dwellers. They may be better this year, but I anticipate not. They just don’t spend the money that the Pohlads have available. I fear I may not live to see the blue and red pinstripes in the World Series again.
re: #85 HappyWarrior
But speaking of good old Pittsburgh Irish. DD do you know the Mechanics Street Bridge which was renamed the 16th Street and I think recently the McCullough? Got some info from a cousin today indictating that third grandfather was an investor in the company that built it way back when. And I remember you mentioning that you had ties to Mayo in the old country. Apparently tons of Mayo-Galway people went to Pittsburgh. Another big spot was Portland, Maine which I think could pass for Western Ireland.
Yes, I remember the Mechanics Street Bridge. Connects Chestnut Street on the North Side to the Strip District.
Going OT:
Anyone else seen the Netflix documentary Fyre, about the ultimate failed Boogie event Fyre Fest?

Same here. Soccer by a mile. But I still like a bunch of sports. NFL is definitely dropping on the list of favorites.
re: #92 steve_davis
My condolences for your loss also.
re: #64 Decatur Deb
Then, depending on where you lived, Catholic school was more like an alternate public school for Catholic kids. (Immigrant-heavy northern cities like Pittsburgh).
Yeah, I went to a public grade school (K-6), and half a mile away was a Catholic school, so we intermingled quite a bit, obviously. The Catholic school boys were the most brutal, insensate bullies it’s possible to imagine.

Yep, my family’s from the North Side originally. If you know Ross Township, that’s where they lived until my Great Grandfather and his widowed mother moved closer to the city in the turn of the century. My Great Grandmother was more of a city girl. Her father was an Iron Pudler and an Irish immigrant from Joyce Country.
Clouded up and snowing. No moon viewing for me. Was nice and clear an hour and a half ago, moon bright as could be.
What makes football fun though is how many teams there are around the world so I could technically speaking adopt one in every major league if I wanted to lol and a country for the world cup.
Very cloudy tonight, looks like it might not let up. Ho hum.

During the Summer I ran into the Pittsburgh Retrographer website. If you’re not familiar, I’ll post on it. It is a graphics manager for 150 years of Pittsburgh Public Works photograph maintained by a Pitt professor.
Cool, please do. I doubt any of mine appear in the photos but you never know.
The wrong kid getting it kind of reminds of me a little when Glenn Beck identified a Saudi student as the Boston bomber and got that kid harassed too. Shame the kid all you want but you don’t need to know his name for it.

Oh wow then so maybe some of my folks might just make some appearances. I have the addresses. I actually went to the house where my dad’s dad grew up in.
I pulled my telescope out because why not. And while I’m outside, I see a guy walking down the sidewalk and I asked him if he’s noticed the moon. Then he looks up. It’s wild how people don’t know.
The moon is about 1/3 darkened here. Our sky has been absolutely transparent since the storm system passed last night.

I pulled my telescope out because why not. And while I’m outside, I see a guy walking down the sidewalk and I asked him if he’s noticed the moon. Then he looks up. It’s wild how people don’t know.
Modern folks don’t look up at the sky much. Thousands of years ago, people would be freaking out about the Moon turning all red or the Sun disappearing. They could tell stories about the patterns of stars in the skies, and how they got there. Nowadays, city dwellers are lucky if they get a glimpse of the brightest stars, and most don’t even know what they’re looking at.
The Rockies are selling off their players one by one to the Yankees. Not real happy about that.
Arenado is pretty much out the door after this upcoming season. Expected to go to the Yankees. I hate the Yankees.

So that would explain why they’re quiet on the Machado front. Try having to play in the same division as the Yanks though and hearing their fans cry about what a bad year it was when they “only” made the ALCS. The O’s have two trips to the ALCS in my lifetime and no WS trips. I’m 31. I hate spoiled fans and being a suffering O’s fan makes me a better football fan too.

I always liked the Rox a little having family in Boulder and all. Still need to see a game at Coors. I didn’t know this but my Aunt apparently has become a big fan. Her now deceased husband was a big RS fan being from Massachusetts but he adopted the Rockies since they were there when the Rockies were created. And yeah it’s tough being in that kind of division. Big pay roll doesn’t win you championships despite what people believe but it sure as hell helps you have a better shot at being consistently competitive.
re: #141 HappyWarrior
My dad was a big Rox fan. My brother got tix to the World Series game at Coors. Glad he got a chance to see them in a Series even though they got swept.
I moved from Colorado the year the Rockies were born. Still can’t believe that sad timing.

Very neat. I’d love to see them competitive. It’s always more special when you’re not competitive that often and have a nice run. I think that’s why most of my fondest playoff memories are mostly baseball related.
Cloud cover has thinned considerably. Not clear, but not socked in, I can seen the dragon eating the motherfucker.

I once saw a 10 yr. old learn that the moon and the sun were two different objects (moon was out in daytime).
My moon is upside down because of the telescope and I am posting them quickly.

I’m trying to remember what the monster old ones weighed. Say a 25” color? They probably would have seriously slow down a bullet.
I had some friends in the 1970’s who were seriously into guns and did some really stupid stuff with them. (To the point I stopped going to the range with them.) But, fortunately, they did not (as far as I know) think to shoot a tv. Of course, if they had thought of it, they would have probably viewed it as a challenge.

My youngest brother had worse timing. He visited my middle brother in Berlin for a few weeks, and came back to the US the day before the Wall came down.

I’m in & out. Warmer that way. Last time out the kid across the street and his mom were out watching, too. Their Christmas lights don’t even interfere. They’re downhill and to the south of me.
The clouds are clearing! I can see a few stars now. I’ll be able to see the Mega Super Giant Wolf Blood Moon Eclipse.

I was fortunate in making a good friend with a guy who transferred in from Catholic school in the 6th grade. He was not a douchebag. I remember he came to school the first day wearing a tie. We gave him a lot of grief over it. This is public school, only teachers wear ties!

Sounds like you had 8-year Grammar School? We were K-6, 3-year Junior High, 3-year High School. I don’t know what happened to these thugs after 6th grade. Juvie? Prison?

The Catholic schools in the Ambridge PA school district area only went up to 8th grade in the borough. There was a high school, Mt. Gallitzin Academy that taught grades 9-12 but it was highly selective and very few got in. Those that failed the cut came to Ambridge High School.
When the mills died the dozen Catholic Churches were forced to combine into a single church and their school was downsized. Of course, “Christian Schools” came in to fill the void…

Good to hear that no one got shot. Not sure I would visit his home after hearing about something like that, though. I suspect that there is a story somewhere in there.
I’m thinking that the old 25” color weighed close to 100lbs. Even a 19” weighed a fair amount. And they cost a lot more (in terms of today’s dollars) than the current flat screens do.

When my dad was a little boy in Brooklyn (1930’s) the neighborhood and the public school was an even split between Jewish kids from Yiddish-speaking homes and Catholic kids from Italian-speaking homes. They couldn’t go to each other’s houses or eat each other’s foods, they didn’t have any of the same holidays and their parents took them to Sabbath services not on the same day…
But they got along really well, because they were all Dodger fans and that’s what mattered most.

I was curious and looked up the folks supporting this, Special Collections. When I went to Pitt they were in Hillman Library.
For those that know a bit about Pittsburgh, they are apparently located in East Liberty (aka ‘sliberty’). The building they are in, used to be the S&H Green Stamps store and then became an A&P grocery store. I hope that this team does better than those two organizations. I think that it later became a Giant Eagle Grocery store. (aka ‘tiggle’.)

The Cities Service gas station in this photo was my playground about ten years after it was taken. The Rexall drugstore was where we paid a rare nickel for a Rheemer’s Blende. It had a large model of a Constellation in the window, which I craved above all things at 7.
Like I said—spooky.
