Neat to see the inclusion (at the one minute mark) of an artist using a ring file on her creation (not ironically, a ring.)

So few people these days have experience with old crafts like these.

Where Brady will almost certainly win, much to my chagrin. KC played a good game. They made it to overtime. It was a valiant effort. And oh dear God, may I please eat my words in the morning.

I was reading about the infamous Sinead O’Connor SNL incident. Man she took a lot of shit for that. I knew about that part. What I didn’t know about were the nasty remarks Sinatra and Pesci made towards her afterwards. And fucking Sinatra, a hypocrite playing devout Catholic while he had adultery and some abortions in the closet. But what I’m really getting at here is what I read Kris Kristofferson did for her. I don’t know Kristofferson that well even in his music. My biggest exposure to him was actually in the Blade movies with Wesley Snipes and knowing he was a Rhodes Scholar as well but knowing that he showed her support makes me really like him and want to give some of his tunes a listen.

Here in the DMV, it depends. You have those elite Catholic schools like the ones that Kavanaugh went to and you also have those like the ones my uncles graduated from that have been more diverse socioeconomic speaking.

I was surprised to see that my Grandfather graduated from a public school in Pittsburgh but his younger sister from Catholic.

At some point the disappearance of the nuns and post-Sputnik science emphasis made the parochial schools unaffordable. Then they became “private”, with varying prestige. I went to parochial schools (and then a Catholic reform school) from an Irish slum.

Peyton is and always will be the GOAT to me. Tom Brady can suck his own dick (apologies for the crude analogy) - the only reason he survived as long as he has is because the NFL has given him their protection. Peyton survived in spite of it.

And I remember you mentioning that you had ties to Mayo in the old country. Apparently tons of Mayo-Galway people went to Pittsburgh. So that would explain why they’re quiet on the Machado front. Try having to play in the same division as the Yanks though and hearing their fans cry about what a bad year it was when they “only” made the ALCS. I always liked the Rox a little having family in Boulder and all. Still need to see a game at Coors. I didn’t know this but my Aunt apparently has become a big fan. Her now deceased husband was a big RS fan being from Massachusetts but he adopted the Rockies since they were there when the Rockies were created. And yeah it’s tough being in that kind of division. Big pay roll doesn’t win you championships despite what people believe but it sure as hell helps you have a better shot at being consistently competitive.

Very neat. I’d love to see them competitive. It’s always more special when you’re not competitive that often and have a nice run. I think that’s why most of my fondest playoff memories are mostly baseball related.

I’m trying to remember what the monster old ones weighed. Say a 25” color? They probably would have seriously slow down a bullet.

I had some friends in the 1970’s who were seriously into guns and did some really stupid stuff with them. (To the point I stopped going to the range with them.) But, fortunately, they did not (as far as I know) think to shoot a tv. Of course, if they had thought of it, they would have probably viewed it as a challenge.

My dad was a big Rox fan. My brother got tix to the World Series game at Coors. Glad he got a chance to see them in a Series even though they got swept.

I moved from Colorado the year the Rockies were born. Still can’t believe that sad timing.

My youngest brother had worse timing. He visited my middle brother in Berlin for a few weeks, and came back to the US the day before the Wall came down.

Yeah, I went to a public grade school (K-6), and half a mile away was a Catholic school, so we intermingled quite a bit, obviously. The Catholic school boys were the most brutal, insensate bullies it’s possible to imagine.

They were even meaner when they transferred to the public school in 9th grade. And Catholic boys who didn’t go to parochial school were just as nasty. Especially when you’re Jewish. Teachers let their antisemitism run unchecked.

Happiest day of my life was when I got out of High School Hell.

I was fortunate in making a good friend with a guy who transferred in from Catholic school in the 6th grade. He was not a douchebag. I remember he came to school the first day wearing a tie. We gave him a lot of grief over it. This is public school, only teachers wear ties!

Sounds like you had 8-year Grammar School? We were K-6, 3-year Junior High, 3-year High School. I don’t know what happened to these thugs after 6th grade. Juvie? Prison?

The Catholic schools in the Ambridge PA school district area only went up to 8th grade in the borough. There was a high school, Mt. Gallitzin Academy that taught grades 9-12 but it was highly selective and very few got in. Those that failed the cut came to Ambridge High School.

When the mills died the dozen Catholic Churches were forced to combine into a single church and their school was downsized. Of course, “Christian Schools” came in to fill the void…

Good to hear that no one got shot. Not sure I would visit his home after hearing about something like that, though. I suspect that there is a story somewhere in there.

I’m thinking that the old 25” color weighed close to 100lbs. Even a 19” weighed a fair amount. And they cost a lot more (in terms of today’s dollars) than the current flat screens do.

Too cold here to do more than occasionally going out and taking a brief look. It was a very good view — and would have spent more time but 6° is outside my comfort range.

Happiest day of my life was when I got out of High School Hell.

When my dad was a little boy in Brooklyn (1930’s) the neighborhood and the public school was an even split between Jewish kids from Yiddish-speaking homes and Catholic kids from Italian-speaking homes. They couldn’t go to each other’s houses or eat each other’s foods, they didn’t have any of the same holidays and their parents took them to Sabbath services not on the same day…

But they got along really well, because they were all Dodger fans and that’s what mattered most.

I was curious and looked up the folks supporting this, Special Collections. When I went to Pitt they were in Hillman Library.

For those that know a bit about Pittsburgh, they are apparently located in East Liberty (aka ‘sliberty’). The building they are in, used to be the S&H Green Stamps store and then became an A&P grocery store. I hope that this team does better than those two organizations. I think that it later became a Giant Eagle Grocery store. (aka ‘tiggle’.)

The Cities Service gas station in this photo was my playground about ten years after it was taken. The Rexall drugstore was where we paid a rare nickel for a Rheemer’s Blende. It had a large model of a Constellation in the window, which I craved above all things at 7.

Like I said—spooky.
