Pseudo-political science rant from a ski bum who’s been described as “smarter than your average dumbass.”

I got to thinking about the Democratic Party when I heard on NPR this morning on my way to work that Kamala Harris was running for President. I thought ‘what a great political party, Democrats are effing diverse!’ And it brought me back to Barack Obama, a man I never voted for. He has done so much, so much, to make the Democratic Party an inclusive place with good ideas to make human lives better. The politics between him and his defeated opponent/Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was contentious but was also beautiful, in that it was truly an exchange of ideas through logic and debate, like our Founding Fathers envisioned how the country should be ran. As time goes by, I admire Obama more and more, his time in politics in large part made me a Democrat. Clinton’s campaign in 2016 was the other large part of me becoming a Democrat after 18 years of being an Independent. Obama though, through meticulous work and the persistence of time, made the Democratic Party what it is today. He’ll be remembered more than Fuckface Von Clownstick in 50 years.

Hard for me to get in the spirit today.

I was just a kid when the Brinks job happened, and still young for the great British Train Robbery and the Lufthansa caper at JFK. These crimes and countless others of their kind, if not their magnitude, have not prevented me from living a long and fairly happy life. But the GTFG (Grand Theft Football Game) in New Orleans yesterday evening may put me away for keeps. I couldn’t watch the KC-NE game, which I’d been looking forward to, and won’t watch the Super Bowl.

We Were Robbed.

I am, thanks. My own little personnel/HR problem here was resolved to the satisfaction of all involved. The teacher who made the racist remarks apparently had never been told they would be offensive to Chinese people. or had never realized it himself. I hope it was a learning experience and that he will at least keep his mouth shut in the future.

As for my fellow lizard in NE, I am not expecting such a satisfactory resolution to our conflict. Perhaps he will surprise me.

As a general rule, I believe doxxing people of any age is a Very Bad Idea, simply because most doxxers are sloppy about verifying the identity of the person they say they’ve found. Those “people search” websites use data that can be years out of date, and there are many people with identical names listed in the wrong places. But regardless of the weaknesses in the practice, children (people under age of consent and/or 18) should be off limits.

I appreciate those of you who support me in this stance.

We agree. Hope your colleague learned. And I totally agree with you about doxxing. I’m all for criticizing bad behavior but I don’t like efforts to find people’s name and social media. A), there’s the possibility you could get the wrong person, B) Wrong behavior doesn’t need to be corrected by the same, and C) As a brother of a high school student and a uncle of a kid about to start kindergarten, I don’t think kids should be ruined. I sincerely hope these kids learn from this experience. I’m not optimistic but I don’t think doxxing would be the right solution and doxxing in my observations seems to be the thing that CCJ and those like him like to do. Glad you’re doing better. I hope he does apologize to you FWIW. Haven’t seen him since that exchange. I think he was very unfair to you and I know I’m not alone in that.

It also involved pet food. A lot of dogs and cats in this country died of kidney failure because of it. I never even heard about the baby formula part at the time.

The pet food scandal was a separate case involving wheat gluten imported from China.

I know, it’s hard to keep up. We’ve had at least one major food scandal each year since I arrived in 2008. The pet food contamination dates from 2006-7.

Same. In the new Red Dead, there’s a character who is 1/2 NA and 1/2 AA. Very interesting character so far. He’s the one who teaches your character about hunting and tracking animals but he’s also a reliable member of the character’s gang. I’m TBH surprised the diversity of the characters didn’t trigger the usual suspects. Sorry I know I went on a tangent about the game. It’s really tough for me to say as a white man on this but they’re both treated awful in different and similar ways.

I interestingly enough visited the Museum of the American Indian in the fall. There was a great exhibit on the ways Native Americans have been portrayed in the media. There was a school group of Native American children at the museum. I encountered a little bit of the lesson their teacher was trying to impact in them. He had them find one representation of media that made them feel proud of their heritage an another that made them embarrassed. I always figured it had to be tough being Natiev American not just with the history but with popular media. I guess that’s why one of my favorite Westerns was Little Big Man. Maybe it’s a little dated by modern standards but having Custer painted as the bad guy and the Grandfather character played by the awesome Chief Dan George as an intelligent, paternal mentor for Jack Crabb was way ahead of its time.my closest brother in age to me is a huge indigenous people’s advocate. He’s trying to study how we can learn from them and I think we can alot especially in our interpersonal relationships.

Thanks for checking that out. As I said, the pet food one is the one I remember, because we were sweating it out to see if Purina One would be affected, but thankfully it wasn’t. I notice Purina acquired a lot of other pet food companies in the aftermath.

Apparently going to an anti-choice march is part of the confirmation process in many Catholic diocese. Here’s the result of a google search with the following search terms:

attending pro life rally requirement for catholic confirmation

Looks like its a choice on a list of activities that fulfill requirements for confirmation.

But I’ve caught him twisting my words before and I’ve let it slide since I do like what he can bring to the conversation but I’ve never seen another lizard do that so often with people’s words. I’ve seen people disagree obviously. I think nuance really gets lost on him and I’m not sure if that’s his personality and how he views things or something else. Anyhow, as I was telling Wheat, I feel his concerns were precisely right after reading about the kid everyone thought was the Smirking kid getting wrongly identified and harassed with threats. That’s not right and you know what, the Smirker himself doesn’t deserve threats. He’s a punk for sure but death threats are wrong. But I was just having some flashbacks to Glenn Beck encouraging harassment of the Saudi kid in Boston.

It honestly makes me kind of sad even though I’ve never been a truly devout Catholic. Yeah I got baptized but I got bored with CCD but like many people from Catholic backgrounds, I have a cultural/family connection to it. My Dad like yourself was a product of the Catholic school system and his uncle was a priest so while I’m really not that religious, I don’t hate Christianity, I hate what Christianity does just like I do with any religion or power structure. But I also see that it can and in fact does do good things. One of my first research papers in high school was on Appalachia, part of my work talked about a non-profit founded by a Catholic priest in Kentucky no less that worked on helping the poor of Appalachia which I thought was very admirable given how hostile that region was to Catholicism at that point.

BTW the kids I knew going to the rallies were much younger than this. I wouldn’t want anyone to harass them obviously but the shit their parents, clergy, and teachers were having them do definitely was done to make women who were getting procedures done uncomfortable. I briefly did have a stint where I considered myself morally opposed to abortion though not legally if that makes any sense but my principle remained always that the individual getting the procedure should not be bothered nor the doctor or medical staff providing it. My opinion then and honestly still is we should make it easier for mothers.

I found it interesting in seeing that my Uncle who I mentioned was in the same rite as Father Lebreve who famously was behind a lot of the hostility towards Vatican II and Uncle Bill- my Nana’s brother was really open minded about things. I’m sure he and I would have disagreed vehemently on things like choice, ordaining women, and LGBT marriage equality but some of that was the time he grew up in as much as his church. I’m glad they condemn income inequality, intolerance towards immigrants, the death penalty but they have a looooooooooong way to go. Don’t know much about KY so thanks for that. That does make sense and Smith’s insights were doubly helpful on this since he’s an educator like yourself but one at a Catholic school(don’t know if you ever taught at Catholic school or not, I forget) but also someone who has coached basketball so he was able to explain the hand signals in the basketball photo weren’t race related. The church really needs to look at itself whenever it tries to act like it’s a moral arbiter especially on things like homosexuality and choice. I’m glad they condemn income inequality, intolerance towards immigrants, the death penalty but they have a looooooooooong way to go. I wouldn’t go if they became more socially liberal I concede since I don’t know if there’s a God or not or subscribe to Christianity.

The US justice system (and many others) need to quit allowing the church to police its own priests without interference. Looks like it’s starting in PA, of all places.

Twitter suspended an account on Monday afternoon that helped spread a controversial encounter between a Native American elder and a group of high school students wearing Make America Great Again hats.

The account claimed to belong to a California schoolteacher. Its profile photo was not of a schoolteacher, but of a blogger based in Brazil, CNN Business found. Twitter suspended the account soon after CNN Business asked about it.

Rob McDonagh, an assistant editor at Storyful, a service that vets content online, was monitoring Twitter activity on Saturday morning and said the @2020fight video was the main version of the incident being shared on social media.
In one indicator of the @2020fight’s video’s virality, multiple newsrooms, including some national American outlets, reached out to the user asking them directly about the video.
McDonagh said he found the account suspicious due to its “high follower count, highly polarized and yet inconsistent political messaging, the unusually high rate of tweets, and the use of someone else’s image in the profile photo.”

IIRC, most of the women who want an abortion are mothers of offspring who have been born.

My Sister in Law said one night after my niece was born that she was more pro-choice after the experience. She loves her daughter obviously but she’s happy with one and what’s good is my brother is one of these guys who isn’t going to push more and he’s definitely not demanding his male heir either hahaha. Besides my niece is already like him in a lot of ways. For one, she’s his co-dietitian and physical fitness adviser…………to me. Her and I have a good relationship where we can joke. She knows she can joke with me. I don’t want her to be intimidated by me.

Bluegirl assisted with that too. And that erally is why I love the community here. We all have something to offer and we listen to each other.

I taught at an independent school affiliated with the Episcopal church, but officially secular and non-denominational. And quite deliberately diverse. We managed to avoid admitting assholes for the most part, too. We admitted quite a few refugee kids from Ukraine, the Balkan republics, Somalia, Sudan and elsewhere, too.

The gd catholic church is big enough to contain diversity. Look up Annunciation House in El Paso. This pope is an improvement. (Low bar.)

And

No matter how bad a thing they do, it’s never the worst thing they’ve ever done. That we know of…

No doubt, I was just using my time in the Church and school as a starting point and the amount of fail from there.

I am in ways still shocked by that whole thing. The little artist kid in me was questioning it all from day one. I went along for the ride and made it a study. My memories sometimes are very vivid.

For me, my belief is this is the world we know, we should try to make the best of it while we’re here and leave it for our descendants. And if there’s some sort of afterlife, great. See and this is how my mind works. “Really I have to name all of them, what if I forget?” I learned later after I backed out of CCD that a lot of people just bs the priest and give a handful of sins. No one wants to be in the confession booth for hours let alone Father.

I think there is something to confession of sins in the way that getting stuff off your back is good. Now, maybe a priest isn’t the person to talk to about that but it does help to admit when you’ve messed up and want to be told it’s okay, just do this and all is forgiven.

Hello, everybody. After lurking daily for almost a decade, I thought I’d finally register and participate in the discussions here. I had been reading off and on since the early Pajama’s Media days. I considered myself a “liberal hawk” back then, but after years and years of consuming right wing blogs during the Iraq War - Insty, Roger Simon, Captain’s Quarters, etc. - I allowed myself to become increasingly brainwashed by the Right.

After the 2008 election, I felt a great liberation and took a couple months off from reading all political blogs to detoxify and re-center myself. A month after Obama’s inauguration, I ripped my toes back into the water, and saw that even those who during the Bush years had presented themselves as “sane conservatives” had gone off the deep end.

Over the years, I watched the comments section change as various more conservative lizards flounced or otherwise quietly wandered away as new blood - more moderate and more liberal - joined.

During the Trump Nightmare, the commenters here have helped keep me sane, and I want to thank all of ya’ll for that.

So cold the ski area stays closed.

Used to go to Sugarloaf in Maine every SuperBowl weekend and yes…a couple of times they halted operations due to wind chill. The bar sure did well though. Something else about those ultra cold temps…they turn the snowpack into concrete. Didn’t used to wear a helmet skiing until I took a fall and bonked my head up there.

China is going to be angry — again.

The United States has informed the Canadian government that it plans to proceed with a formal request to extradite Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on allegations of banking fraud related to violations of US sanctions against Iran, Canada’s Globe and Mail reported on Tuesday.

The report said Canada’s ambassador to the US, David MacNaughton, has met with senior White House and US State Department officials about the Meng case several times.

They think that’s what they want, a mass exodus of federal employees from the shuttered agencies/departments which will somehow lead to a reduction in “dead weight.” But we already know that’s a crock because Trump has had to start hauling back “non-essential” personnel just to avoid politically damaging scenarios such as tax refunds being delayed.

Ayep. And the sick-outs in the TSA and ATC ranks are only growing, while the last bit of spending on food stamps went out yesterday. The USCG is being deployed without pay, while their “non-essential personnel” being furloughed means vital tasks such as keeping supply chains of parts and labor running are petering out. The breaking point’s likely going to be next Friday, when those 800K miss another paycheck and the consequences begin to coalesce.

Another thing that comes to mind is that back pains N.O.S. are a common schtick people addicted to painkillers try at hospitals. So they sit the patient down for observation.

As some down the thread point out, the band only means they took basic info and entered him into the system. Then they likely told him that his case was not serious enough to warrant immediate attention, so they sent him back to the waiting room to keep beds free for actual emergencies like gun shot wounds or heart attacks. As the ER waiting room either had nothing but chairs or the benches inside were full, he was advised to use a bench outside to alleviate the pain.

He’ll probably end the whole thing with a shot of painkillers, a script for more to fill at the pharmacy, and a referral to his primary care doctor for follow-up. The “possible blood clot” business is the sort of self-diagnosis that doctors tend to frown upon.

Taiwan’s ‘Bikini Climber’ falls to her death: 5 things to know about Gigi Wu

Taiwan’s “bikini climber” Gigi Wu was found dead after falling down a ravine in Taiwan’s Yushan national park and badly injuring herself.

Last Saturday (Jan 19), Wu, 36, used a satellite phone to inform friends about her fall, informing them that she was unable to move her lower limbs.

However, bad weather made it difficult for rescue helicopters to reach the New Taipei City native and her body was located on Monday, 43 hours after her distress call.

That’s assuming those two have the ability to realize that. Hoft and Milo were fine with Trump who they claim isn’t anti gay picking Pence who is one of the most anti-gay politicians ever in public life to be his second. They don’t care and besides Milo would just go back to England if shit got bad and Hoft would go back to being what he was before.

The Right is launching a two pronged attack based in racism and misogyny against Kamala Harris. First is renewed birtherism, since her parents were foreign born, and second she is being attacked for an affair she had with Willie Brown in the 90s. The fact that Trump is a sexual predator and serial adulterer doesn’t give them a moment’s pause in their slut shaming.

I don’t know for sure about that. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh would probably join Alito and Thoams but Roberts as loathesome as he is might be inclined to keep it since it is set law. Let me put it this way, I think Roberts is more likely to upheld gays and lesbians in the military since it’s set and passed law like ACA was than he was Obergefell and federal gay marriage being legal since there was DOMA as set law. I don’t like it obviously and I definitely think Roberts’ own prejudices got in the way there but he does have some sort of patterns. Now that said, he did weaken VRA so Joe could be right unfortunately. Man it kills me. We haven’t had a truly progressive minded CJ since Warren and Warren left SCOTUS when my mom was 10.

A Chinese MMA fighter defeated a self-described tai chi master and a Wing Chun (kung fu) master. Now he’s getting attacked for dishonoring traditional Chinese martial arts.

It’s another example of Chinese nationalism, exceptionalism and parochialism. “China First” as it were.

Watch the video in the tweet.

[Embedded content]

Here’s the article, too. beta.scmp.com

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve been watching videos recently where US martial artists of various “schools” are being exposed for promoting things like “chi” (energy fields) in fighting. On the other hand I do get a tiny bit annoyed by these people doing the exposes when they mix sumo in with martial arts. Sumo is a wrestling discipline, not a martial art. It has specific rules and isn’t intended to be a martial art.

Update on my hotel situation: It was so cold overnight there was a problem with the hotel’s water system, which caused the persistent alarms. The fire department was called out and took care of the problem. Nice to know there wasn’t actually a fire that was going to send me out into the cold, frozen night. It also gave me the opportunity to triage what was important and what wasn’t in case I had to leave the building.

On the other hand, my cold is worse and I feel awful. I can’t believe I went to Japan in October, was around thousands upon thousands of people and I didn’t pick up a cold there. Then I work daily in a building with hundreds of people and I didn’t pick up a cold there. But go to Boston, it’s sub-freezing and I pick up a cold. Go figure.

Interesting note from a CNN story on the shutdown:

“Federal employees are bracing themselves for their second missed paycheck. If the government doesn’t reopen today in time to make payroll, some 800,000 workers won’t get paid for a second pay cycle in a row.

Meanwhile, some members of Congress are also refusing their paychecks in a show of solidarity.

So far, 102 members of Congress say they will turn down their paychecks during the partial government shutdown, according to social media posts and statements reviewed by CNN. That comprises 20 senators and 82 representatives, with members from both parties making up a similar proportion of those going without pay.”

I see differences among these things. Taking your own minor kids to a peaceful rally is a good thing, I think, provided that you don’t use them as props - e.g. making them carry a sign you made for them that they don’t care about.

Taking your older children to a rally about an issue they care about is also good.

A school, private or otherwise, taking children to a political rally to take part? That bothers me. A LOT. Sure, they’ll figleaf it with “students may opt out”, but we all know how peer pressure works.

Trump is actively undermining active investigations, including against his favorite target: MS-13.

It’s also undermining the ongoing investigations into Trumpworld, which is why the shutdown will continue. He found something that might prevent him from going to prison for at least a short while - and which is blessed by the GOP bigwigs like McConnell - sabotaging functioning government and causing crises where none existed.

These are saboteurs and extortionists. They refuse to govern.

Do not treat them as anything but saboteurs and extortionists. Giving in to their demands will only bring more sabotage and extortion.

I recall going to catechism class for First Holy Communion at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic school in Gary, Indiana in the late 1960’s

It was taught by a nice nun. But one thing I recall was when the Monsignior came to visit and she got down on her knees to kiss his ring.

Now this was also the time when MLK was with us and Civil Rights and Liberty was a big thing in my young, idealistic mind and I could not help but think that such a gesture was totally out of place in a modern world and society.

My Divine Providence nuns were the daughters of coal miners and steel workers, in a congregation founded by a labor-organizing German bishop in Bismarck’s day. It showed.

I was schooled by The Sisters of St. Francis ( Franciscans) who came from Joliet Illinois.

As I was saying on Sunday, different times in my Catholic background. They were all products of Vatican II, the kinder gentler more inclusive and celebratory church. And it was the 60s and the era of social change and they all seemed to be in on all that.

It is obvious Roe v Wade set the church off into the political realm that has really changed all I experienced. Another reason politics should be kept out of religion.

I also recall as a 14-year-old hearing out priest say that the Catholic SCOTUS judge who voted for Roe v Wade should be excommunicated.

That was another point when I said “f*ck this shit, I’m outta here”.

That would have been William Brennan, who was subjected to a “will you be taking your marching orders from the Vatican?” drilling when his hearings were held in 1956. I read those hearings one night when I was supposed to be shelling books in my university’s law library. I knew of course how Kennedy had been treated in 1960; I had no idea similar questions were being asked of Brennan.

My brother did similar. Went from under 5’ and roly poly to broad shouldered, slim hipped and 6’ in about a year. NEVER stopped eating, bless his heart.

Trump’s going to fuck over the South Koreans.

First he’s intent on meeting with the North again, despite evidence that North Korea has expanded their nuke and missile programs since the last one-on-one.

Now he’s seeking to extort South Korea to get money for basing our troops.]

The headline I saw framed it as “Trump gives Kim second chance”.

“Quite honestly the electorate in some places is putting more and more progressive and self described socialists in positions and, uh, ironically, years ago when I first got into the FBI one of the missions of the FBI in its counter-intelligence efforts was to try and keep these people out of government. Why? Because we would end up with massive disfunction and massive disinformation and massive misinformation.”

Facetious post coming:
So, we’re supposed to believe her? It’s just her say so that her husband beat her. Where’s the proof. Where’s the evidence? ‘

Reality:
No one deserves to be assaulted, and this is a domestic violence claim. We also know that far too many domestic violence situations end up with gun violence, as the most common gun violence and homicides is among family members - usually the male shooting their female partner.

Now, does this change her mind about gun ownership for those people who are accused of domestic violence?

I doubt it.
