Trump Tries to Bully Nancy Pelosi Into Giving Him the House Floor for His Dystopian State of the Union Speech - UPDATE: Pelosi Responds: “Nope”

Last week Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Donald Trump, asking him to postpone his State of the Union speech, since he shut down the government and all. (We all know it’s going to be another narcissistic, xenophobic mess anyway, ranting about immigrants and lying about achievements he didn’t actually achieve.)

Trump’s first reaction was to cancel Pelosi’s trip to Afghanistan, banning her from using a military aircraft for the trip.

Well, now President Manbaby is trying to just ride right over Nancy Pelosi; he says he’s going to show up and give the speech in the House chamber whether she wants it or not. Which kind of fits with his history of not caring whether he gets permission from women.

Unfortunately for the Trump-thing, he doesn’t control this. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate need to pass a joint resolution inviting him to speak in the chamber.

My opinion doesn’t count for a hill of beans in this crazy mixed up timeline, but I strongly urge Nancy Pelosi to call Trump’s bluff. He can’t be allowed to bully his way into the House for his egomaniacal speech.

We’re in uncharted waters here. We’ve got Trump demanding access to the House and ignoring that he’s been disinvited from the SOTU pending a funding bill to reopen government. He’s on pace to ignore the Pelosi letter and just show up.

The House rules give Pelosi explicit control. Trump doesn’t give a shit about the rules. We’ve seen this time and again, and the GOP will cheer on Trump destroying the norms and standards, just as surely as they were cheering when McConnell destroyed comity and the advise and consent clause by refusing to even hold hearings on Merrick Garland.

This is a regressive, reactionary, and craven GOP that is intent on sabotaging functioning government.

Despite all that, this story isn’t even the most important of the day (or hour… I’m not sure given pace of events). It’s the fact that Michael Cohen’s lawyer explicitly states that Trump engaged in federal felonies - witness tampering, obstructing justice, interfering in ongoing investigations:

That’s impeachable offenses for those keeping score, and it’s up to House Democrats to rectify.

The other side to this besides his need to establish some measure of dominance over Nancy is Donny’s lack of credible alternative options.

A letter or White House address wouldn’t net him the sort of ego-stroking he needs, no matter how much the media might get tingles up their legs about his sounding “presidential.” He needs a live audience and either of these options simply wouldn’t provide him with that.

The proposal to hold the speech in the Senate is handicapped by the same reality that Nancy won’t allow a resolution for a joint session to be voted upon and even if she would, Mitch likely couldn’t pull together the votes to break a Dem filibuster.

The last option, holding a rally in a red state venue, would get him a huge audience but wouldn’t draw the sort of national attention that a SOTU address normally does. Plus it wouldn’t involve Congress directly, which would mean Nancy and Chuck had succeeded in keeping him out.

So, given his lack of other options that tick the two major objectives of getting a huge audience and doing so to spite Nancy, he’s left with no other option but to cause a constitutional crisis because his ego demands it.

So what is he actually up to? I’d refer you to this excellent article in Tuesday’s Post from Damian Paletta and Josh Dawsey, which describes how throughout his career Trump has employed a particular mode of negotiation: “He creates — or threatens to create — a calamity, and then insists he will address the problem only if his adversary capitulates to a separate demand.”

That is precisely what is happening with the shutdown right now. Trump created the calamity, then demanded his wall to bring it to an end. In return, he offered a temporary reprieve for “dreamers” — the very ones whose future he put in jeopardy when he tried to cancel the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. It’s like me stealing your car, then saying if you give me a bunch of money, I’ll give it back to you, but only temporarily.

…….When Pelosi poked him in the way she did, he had to reassert his dominance, to make sure everyone knows that he’s the one who decides if the State of the Union happens, not her. The trouble is that in this case, she does get to decide. Given what we know about her, it’s unlikely that the threat to just show up is going to make her back down.

I’ve argued that for all his self-regard Trump is actually a dreadful negotiator, but this episode shows that it goes further than just being bad at getting what he wants. A negotiation with Trump might not just fail, it can turn into a catastrophe. We’ve already suffered through a few of them, and in the next two years, with Democrats running the House and the special counsel breathing down his neck, Trump will feel more and more constrained. In response, he’s likely to create more crises and more chaos, in the hope that he can emerge from it all on top.

Somehow, I only just now realized that the Rachael Prior I’d been following is a top dog at Big Talk Productions, and it only took her personally promoting The Kid Who Would Be King on her account to realize it.

They’d rather send troops to the border to stop migrant women and children from coming to the US to seek asylum. They’re afraid of women and children - because they aren’t white. They don’t want transgendered persons serving.

I think the most effective way of keeping him from speaking would be to have the audio system locked up and blaring loud music so he can’t speak. I can’t see the Secret Service crashing through doors to control an audio system. I don’t think Pelosi can keep Trump from entering the room but she could keep him from being heard.

I feel like if the House bill passes and Trump actually vetoes then he’s absolutely fucked. He’ll probably lose another 3 to 5 points in popularity within the week, federal workers will miss another paycheck and the economy will really start to tank. More retailers will be unable to renew their foodstamp eligibility, businesses that rely on spending from federal employees and contractors will start to lay people off and the ripple effects will start hitting the stock market hard. At that point, with Trump so visibly wounded and toothless there should be enough GOP Senate votes to override. I think it means they wouldn’t get funding from the RNC and/or the RNC might even run ads against them. They probably wouldn’t allow any debates, that sort of thing.

But the primaries are mostly run by the states and if you wanted to file papers to run as a Republican in Iowa or New Hampshire, that’s through the state’s Secretary of State’s office.

I agree. I just think dismissing the idea out of hand as prosperous is foolish. Agree about the culture too. Another problem IMO and this comes from my arbitrator family background but instead of being a neutral broker between management and labor, government has increasingly been on management’s side. AOC illustrated this when she pointed out that there were no labor leaders and only corporate leaders at her orientation. I’m not against having business leaders speak to Congresspeople obviously but labor leaders should be heard too.

Among other things, it would have made the 14th amendment fail in its original purpose of granting citizenship to freed slaves, since slave parents who were property at the time of the birth of a slave child can hardly have been viewed as having any ‘allegiance’ to the US.

One does not inquire as to the national allegiance of horses, furniture, or US antebellum slaves. It’s a gross category error.

I suspect that Trump is planning to get us into a war.

It is basically the last thing he has to distract from all the distractions he has created to distract us from the previous distractions.

The problem is that he needs to do this and finish it successfully just before the 2020 elections. The goal is to use that as a way to get re-elected. Just as Bush jr did with Iraq. And that his father did not do in the First Gulf War. So the timing may yet be a little early.

When Trump started, I was assuming North Korea or Iran. He has effectively removed North Korea. And it looks like he is realizing how difficult Iran would be.

So, like a bully, he is looking for a weaker and easier target. Venezuela fits the bill.

While I have little sympathy for the Venezuelan kleptocracy, I do feel bad for their citizenry. And even more sympathy for the US troops who would be sent into harms way for a political stunt. They joined up to protect this country and Constitution, not die for Trump’s re-election.

Prior to the establishment of the DHS the USCG was under the control of the Dept. of Transportation, since the late ’60s. Prior to that it was within the Dept. of Treasury, from it’s inception in the early 1900s

Very true.

I very much agree that he sucks. In business. In leadership. In just being human.

Trump has enough psychological problems that he and his administration are incompetent. Which does not bode well for any military adventures.

Unfortunately, I do not know that there is anyway to stop him from getting us into a war in the short term.

The big problem is that if the military adventure is timed right, and sized correctly, its obvious faults and failures will not become apparent until after the 2020 election.

Interesting parallel is that when the Civil War started, it was sold, in the South, as defending your home against the invading hordes from the North. And a lot of patriotic Southerners joined up for that reason.

After about a year, some started to see through it. Large numbers of Confederates were awol during the Antietam Campaign. But it took about 2 years before most saw through the lies. At which point, large numbers started walking away. By the fall of 1864, Jefferson Davis the Confederate President noted that more Confederate soldiers had deserted than were present.

But any foreign leader with a modicum of experience could humiliate the crap out of Trump. Imagine if he started acting like a tough guy and circumstances made him look even weaker. You think no wall would piss off the Red Hats? What will they think if some schlub from South America hands Trump his ass militarily?
