Tuition for my last semester at UTAustin (spring 1984) was $212.50 for a full load of classes. Thirty-five years later it’s between $5,000 and $6,000. I had a hell of a time finding the money for books after scraping up the $212.50.

I don’t know how people expect kids to go to college and come out with six-figure debt.

“It has been noted” that the shutdown ended within hours of La Guardia being closed for domestic air traffic due to ATC (Air Traffic Controllers) being overwhelmed. Additionally, there was an article today noting that it could take 12-18 months for the IRS to get caught up from the shutdown. So, yes, you are correct.

Currently looking at indivisible.org and act.moveon.org. Looks like they may have cancelled the protests originally scheduled for Tuesday.

Have to say that I thought it was a terrific film, reminiscent in style to another favorite of mine The Big Short, probably because both were directed and written by Adam McKay. I hated Scalia before the movie — and hate him even more afterward. Certainly informs on how Trump and the modern Republican party arose. Cheney was a more competent (and not treasonous) version of Trump.

From my read, things outside lgf were really bothering him. Remember that he has had a very hard life.

The official reason was that he and another lgf poster got into a heated disagreement over whether the Covington students should be treated as adults or as children. He then left.

I find the whole situation saddening as I enjoy, appreciate, and learn a lot from the postings of both parties. I, for one, do hope that he recovers and returns.

It certainly didn’t go into how Cheney destroyed Valerie Plame’s career nor how Bush eventually became disenchanted with Cheney. A lot of detail was omitted to progress the story line. It did not cover the incompetence of the post-war reconstruction of Iraq, nor the chaos that the invasion created throughout the Middle East nor the mishandling of Afghanistan. But it did remind us of the true evil of Cheney/Bush administration. One of my girl friends is really very naive about politics and ignorant of history — she was unsure on whether this movie portrayed Cheney as a force for evil or good and thought his closing statement on how all this was done to make us safe was persuasive!! At least she is fiercely opposed to Trump.

I fucking HATED this movie. I hated it so goddamned much that I ranted about it and then got into it here with RWC’s “left wing” friend, who thought I was unfairly maligning the filmmakers’ motives. Besides the torture porn this is exactly why I thought it was so incredibly toxic and irresponsible, because it has now found its way straight into Trump’s syphilis addled brain and is directly fueling his fear mongering rhetoric & all of this was absolutely predictable at the time.

Thank god for financial help on tuition, otherwise my daughters would have looked forward to a future as a McDonald’s assistant manager as a career high. What sparked that exchange with me and others was my questioning the ethics of doxxing those high school kids on social media. Anymouse’s position was racism must be condemned, the kids were in a public space and aware of being recorded, and doxxing them was therefore appropriate. I argued that they are minors and doxxing them was not appropriate, no matter what bullshit they were pulling. We went round and round for a while, with him basically characterizing anyone who would not dox them as racists, or at least condoning racist behavior. We took offense. He left.

Later, he was spotted relating the entire exchange from his POV on Wonkette, and mischaracterizing what we had said.

Whether his non-LGF life was hard at the time, I can’t say. I had just spent the day dealing with a racism issue on my own staff, and I was really in no mood to hear someone tell me I was being a racist because I wouldn’t want those kids doxxed.

Yeah, I’m still pissed about it. I’m sorry he flounced, because he does have valuable insights and contributions to make here. His “my way or I take to the highway” thing gets old, though.

Oh absolutely and I said it constantly- Trump isn’t the GOP’s illness, he is but a symptom but where Trump does stand out is how widespread it is. The GOPers in Congress during Nixon weren’t out right enablers like Nunes, McConnell, Graham, and others are. The cabinet too. I pointed out that there would never be a Saturday Night Massacre in the Trump administration because Whitaker or Barr would fire Mueller without a thought in contrast with Elliott Richardson who did refuse to fire Cox for Nixon. I think him and I got to an understanding on what the other was trying to communicate. I just think it does a disservice to how bad Trump really is to suggest even if not the intention that the past ones were as bad as Trump. I can’t think of a single aspect of Trump’s presidency or personality that deserves praising. I can’t even praise the man as a father and husband ot acknowledge shared hobbies. He’s just an all around awful person.

My son is in his sophomore year at community college, will have to take Organic Chem next summer to finish his Associates (engineering major, thinks he may specialize in Chem). We’re scraping by, but have been able to cover his tuition and books so far, with him living at home. Next fall it’s on to a 4-year college and the start of the student loans — hoping for a Pell Grant, or whatever assistance he’s able to get.

What sparked that exchange with me and others was my questioning the ethics of doxxing those high school kids on social media. Anymouse’s position was racism must be condemned, the kids were in a public space and aware of being recorded, and doxxing them was therefore appropriate. I argued that they are minors and doxxing them was not appropriate, no matter what bullshit they were pulling. We went round and round for a while, with him basically characterizing anyone who would not dox them as racists, or at least condoning racist behavior. We took offense. He left.

Later, he was spotted relating the entire exchange from his POV on Wonkette, and mischaracterizing what we had said.

Whether his non-LGF life was hard at the time, I can’t say. I had just spent the day dealing with a racism issue on my own staff, and I was really in no mood to hear someone tell me I was being a racist because I wouldn’t want those kids doxxed.

Yeah, I’m still pissed about it. I’m sorry he flounced, because he does have valuable insights and contributions to make here. His “my way or I take to the highway” thing gets old, though.

And frankly his anti-Christianity has come to the point of pure bigotry. There are quite a few other atheists here that do not need to fight about it. But his attitude against is like that of a fundamentalist against Islam - there is nothing possible good and it’s proved because X never says Y against Z. I would not tolerate that of an Islamophobe and I’m not willing to tolerate that any more about anyone.

UVA’s student newspaper, the Cavalier Daily, reports the bridge, which is frequently painted on by students, was defaced at about 1 a.m. on Thursday morning. The paper also reported that Charlottesville police are choosing not to investigate the graffiti.

Markiana Smith, president of UVA’s undergraduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, says she and her sorority sisters were “stunned” when they heard about the hateful message.

Funnily for me, one of my first run-ins and experiences with his stubborn side was on religion even though I’m Agnostic and thus more closer to his perspective on theological questions than yourself but I pointed out more or less that a state outright hostile towards religion like the USSR could have the same problems as a state with church and state together. He didn’t like that. The others in the community got what I was saying. And yeah I’m sorry but he is bigoted against Christians. What he expects out of Christians is reminiscent of what I see people expect from Muslims. Not every last Christian kook deserves a condemnation from liberal Christians like yourself when your best example is how you live your lives and treat people.

I think it is impossible for a Christian to understand what it is like to be an atheist in a religious area. It is not benign. The best Christians are often condescending and judgmental. Jesus commanded to make converts. Christians follow this directive. I never told anyone I was an atheist that’s how threatened I felt. I can understand the “all Christians” thing because I have experienced it.

I can’t figure Reagan out because I don’t know too much about the man but I think he was a cynic beneath the sunny optimism that he liked to portray. He was fine with the New Deal for a long time but he started drifting right around the time the Dems started championing the idea that the promise of the New Deal should be for all people. I think it is impossible for a Christian to understand what it is like to be an atheist in a religious area. It is not benign. The best Christians are often condescending and judgmental. Jesus commanded to make converts. Christians follow this directive. I never told anyone I was an atheist that’s how threatened I felt. China is becoming more hostile to religion, other than the “state approved” churches. It’s not just Muslims and Tibetan Buddhists feeling the heat, but also independent Christian sects and of course the Falun Gong.

The Party wants religion to serve the State, and to give Chinese people some sort of extra moral compass besides the Party’s teachings. But the Party doesn’t want them teaching stuff like there is a higher power than the Party, or people are endowed with fundamental human rights, and all that stuff.

I for one am glad we have your perspective as an educator in China. As you know, I took a couple classes on Chinese history. I find what’s happening very fascinating. I believe President Xi is the first Chinese leader to have been born after Mao took power. Cuba is undergoing a similiar thing with Castro’s successor. What really hurt the USSR in the end was how its leaders did not adopt to the new realities. By the time Gorby came along in the mid 80’s, it was too late. Brezhnev is a fascinating yet I think a Soviet leader that does not get enough attention in history even though he was there from LBJ’s presidency to the early years of Reagan- a good chunk of the Cold War.

FLG is a curiosity. It has some cult-like aspects, but in general it seems like an offshoot of taoism and Buddhism. The Party doesn’t care for FLG because the group opposes the Party, and the leadership of the FLG were getting too powerful and influential. FLG accuses the Chinese prison system of harvesting organs from inmates, but there’s no way of knowing how valid those accusations are. Walking around Hong Kong, you can find FLG protesters with photos as lurid as the ones anti-choice groups display in the USA. FLG is less obnoxious to passers-by than anti-choice nuts, though.

I am sometimes harsh on religion in general, but especially so on Christianity since that is how I was raised and that is what my direct experiences are. And, in some ways I feel personally responsible for some of the excesses done under its cover.

It is annoying even to me when I say something about “Christians” without being more specific, so I generally, in those cases, put the word in quotes. We need a word for the clearly bad ones, “Mammonites” or “Loud Christians”?

I’m really starting to like “Loud Christians,” it penetrates and rolls off the tongue.

I think that’s a different matter all together. FWIW I’m glad O’Hare was there to protest prayer in school. In fact, even though I’m not religious at all myself, I think you can make a very religious based argument against forced prayer in the sense that prayer should be personal and individual and not forced. A prayer isn’t any good if it’s forced. I liked the line Bill shared from his church on confession: All are welcome to confess, some need it more than others, but no one must. Finding the answers to the great theological questions that face us really should be individual and not coerced at all.

Given my mother’s history, I could never be a Roman Catholic - my own anti-clerical streak has a very strong (yeah, I’ll call it this) bias in that respect. I found the Episcopalian/Anglican tradition a relief because I could have the ritual I loved with a much saner approach to the issues of authority and teaching. For example, we Elect our bishops from a slate of those who choose to run.

I can not speak to others, or their churches. But in my parish, I have occasionally preached (officially, “offered a meditation on the scripture” :D ) and my emphasis has always been on Orthopraxy and opposition to the heresy of inerrancy and the idolatry of certainty. Most of the time, there are people who think they can run for President and wind up backing down when it’s obvious to anyone with a pulse that they have no chance in the initial caucuses and primaries.

Here, there are three (Tulsi, Bernie and Schultz**) with the possibility of a fourth (Bloomberg). None of them have a shot of making a dent anywhere but they all want the attention right now, and so do their supporters on social media. But it’s all vaporware.

Economically conservative is where I think he falls. He’s got a Wall Street streak, which makes sense since many of his constituents and donors have jobs thanks to Wall Street and the NYC metro area.

Doesn’t mean he couldn’t support taxes on the millionaire class, but that’s not going to be his primary focus.

Agreed. In Canada the ruling party is giving a 5 year term and is required by law to call an election before that term ends. Typically this happens at the 4 year mark though we’ve sometimes seen 3 year and even 1 year depending on how things break out.

Hispanics mostly self identify as white(because they are) and when you look at the demographic projections there is usually an asterisk that specifies non-hispanic whites. Given a couple generations and they will just be white and the majority will be maintained.

It kind of depends on the candidates. Note that in elections last year, when the primaries ended, in almost all cases the Democratic loser not only backed the winner, but actively campaigned for the winner.

I can only think of a couple of candidates that haven’t followed that pattern in the past, and one of them isn’t a registered Democrat.

there is going to be a ton of ratfucking and half the “supporters” you hear for a lot of candidates are going to be bots doing their best to keep the Dems divided or apathetic or unwilling to vote in the general for anyone but their ideal choice.

And anybody running independent will be seeing a lot of support from mysterious sources

The GOP is already lined up behind Trump so they are going to have nothing better to do than to try to exploit every weakness, real or perceived in the Democratic Party and the DNC.

U.S. Treasury Set to Borrow $1 Trillion for a Second Year to Finance the Deficit

The U.S. Treasury Department is set to maintain elevated sales of long-term debt to finance the government’s widening budget deficit, with new issuance projected to top $1 trillion for a second-straight year.

Many strategists at primary-dealer firms predict that this Wednesday’s quarterly refunding announcement will see the Treasury maintain note and bond sales at the record high levels they have boosted them to in recent months.

The total amount of 3-, 10- and 30-year securities to be offered at next week’s refunding auctions is seen by most at $84 billion. While that’s $1 billion more than the total for these maturities three months ago, that’s only because the size of the three-year sale was already nudged higher in December.

A heightened supply of Treasury securities follows tax cuts and government spending increases implemented under the current administration. That’s darkening a fiscal outlook already made worrisome by rising entitlement-program expenses and higher costs to service America’s nearly $16 trillion in debt. The Federal Reserve’s balance-sheet runoff is also adding to supply, forcing Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to tap the public for more funding.

“We’ve seen deficits continue to blow out,” said Brian Edmonds, head of interest-rates trading at Cantor Fitzgerald in New York. “We are going to see more and more supply.”
