Lyrics

I’m a white man living in a white man’s world
Under our roof is a baby girl
I thought this world could be hers one day
But her mama knew better

I’m a white man living in a white man’s town
Want to take a shot of cocaine and burn it down
Mama wants to change that Nashville sound
But they’re never gonna let her

There’s no such thing as someone else’s war
Your creature comforts aren’t the only things worth fighting for
Still breathing, it’s not too late
We’re all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate

I’m a white man living on a white man’s street
I’ve got the bones of the red man under my feet
The highway runs through their burial grounds
Past the oceans of cotton

I’m a white man looking in a black man’s eyes
Wishing I’d never been one of the guys
Who pretended not to hear another white man’s joke
Oh, the times ain’t forgotten

There’s no such thing as someone else’s war
Your creature comforts aren’t the only things worth fighting for
You’re still breathing, it’s not too late
We’re all carrying one big burden, sharing one fate

I’m a white man living in a white man’s nation
I think the man upstairs must’a took a vacation
I still have faith, but I don’t know why
Maybe it’s the fire in our little girl’s eyes
Maybe it’s the fire in our little girl’s eyes

Just finished this little peek at the process of how platinum scrap becomes pure platinum again. A two-minute demonstration. The fun part is it was all shot on my Samsung Galaxy Friday.

Tuition for my last semester at UTAustin (spring 1984) was $212.50 for a full load of classes. Thirty-five years later it’s between $5,000 and $6,000. I had a hell of a time finding the money for books after scraping up the $212.50.

I don’t know how people expect kids to go to college and come out with six-figure debt.

Seems odd that a man who has built a hugely successful business of running coffee shops seems to think that makes him a viable candidate to run the United States.

What are your policy positions? Do you have any? Or is this just hubris?

Enquiring minds, dontcha know.

There’s actually a deep-brain reason for that…

Most mammals, their younglings are easily identifiable as younglings because their heads are too big for their bodies, their eyes are too big for their heads, and our primal instinct tells us that’s OMG SO CUTE!! This happens for almost all species; and our threat responses don’t kick in.

(eta: this is why your dog will tolerate your 2-year-old pulling his tail, but if an adult tries it he snaps)

“It has been noted” that the shutdown ended within hours of La Guardia being closed for domestic air traffic due to ATC (Air Traffic Controllers) being overwhelmed. Additionally, there was an article today noting that it could take 12-18 months for the IRS to get caught up from the shutdown. So, yes, you are correct.

Currently looking at indivisible.org and act.moveon.org. Looks like they may have cancelled the protests originally scheduled for Tuesday.

Sunday afternoon, I went with two girl friends to see Vice. Have to say that I thought it was a terrific film, reminiscent in style to another favorite of mine The Big Short, probably because both were directed and written by Adam McKay. I hated Scalia before the movie — and hate him even more afterward. Certainly informs on how Trump and the modern Republican party arose. Cheney was a more competent (and not treasonous) version of Trump.

I saw it when it opened on Christmas Day, really loved it. Probably the only thing that annoyed me was the incredibly short amount of time spent on the outing of Valerie Plame. They left Fitzgerald’s Special Council investigation and prosecution of Libby and the wedge that Bush’s refusal to pardon Libby drove between him and Dick. I get that it was already getting long but that seemed like important stuff to omit.

From my read, things outside lgf were really bothering him. Remember that he has had a very hard life.

The official reason was that he and another lgf poster got into a heated disagreement over whether the Covington students should be treated as adults or as children. He then left.

I find the whole situation saddening as I enjoy, appreciate, and learn a lot from the postings of both parties. I, for one, do hope that he recovers and returns.

It certainly didn’t go into how Cheney destroyed Valerie Plame’s career nor how Bush eventually became disenchanted with Cheney. A lot of detail was omitted to progress the story line. It did not cover the incompetence of the post-war reconstruction of Iraq, nor the chaos that the invasion created throughout the Middle East nor the mishandling of Afghanistan. But it did remind us of the true evil of Cheney/Bush administration. One of my girl friends is really very naive about politics and ignorant of history — she was unsure on whether this movie portrayed Cheney as a force for evil or good and thought his closing statement on how all this was done to make us safe was persuasive!! At least she is fiercely opposed to Trump.

While I have not seen the movie, it always seemed to me that Bush-Cheney played the “Good-Cop/Bad-Cop” game. Which is how the Bush family has always worked. Keep the dirty stuff at a plausible distance. And keep a group of thugs to handle things in the background. That family did not get to where they are, and stay there, by being wonderful clean folks.

I fucking HATED this movie. I hated it so goddamned much that I ranted about it and then got into it here with RWC’s “left wing” friend, who thought I was unfairly maligning the filmmakers’ motives. Besides the torture porn this is exactly why I thought it was so incredibly toxic and irresponsible, because it has now found its way straight into Trump’s syphilis addled brain and is directly fueling his fear mongering rhetoric & all of this was absolutely predictable at the time.

I didn’t go to college but I just put my oldest daughter through UCB and my youngest is a junior at Mills College. Thank god for financial help on tuition, otherwise my daughters would have looked forward to a future as a McDonald’s assistant manager as a career high. Of course with a Donald Trump regime that still hasn’t been ruled out.

It’s sad that I can believe the OP’s argument that Trump is getting his daily briefings from B-movies. It all fits Trump’s crazy ramblings in his speeches about the “border crisis.”

Trump’s understanding of the world at large is about the same as a 12-year-old boy learning all about espionage by watching James Bond movies.

when I was looking for an apartment in Moscow, first thing people said to look for was a gas stove, so that you could keep cooking when the electricity went out (they seldom both went out at the same time) and if the gas went out, you could transfer to a hot plate.

I also jumped in to that thread to say that my issue was less with the young kids than with their school, which put them in a confrontational situation and failed to equip them with the skills or even basic manners to deal with it an obviously did little or nothing to intervene.

Absolutely. TBH the problem to me is that instead of taking the kids to museums in the city, religious schools take them to boycott choice. And they should have forbade the MAGA hat. Even if you don’t believe the hat is racist, still should have been discouraged. I really took issue with AM’s characterization of Wheat and the remedy.

The school bears ultimate responsibility for the behavior of those kids in a public setting like that, especially one that his highly charged and confrontational. But they seemed to encourage those reactions

Yeah online debate can get heated. I was probably foolish to wander into that rabbit hole with AM since him and I had been arguing albeit civilly about the whole is Trump unique thing and he takes the position that past Republicans were the same more or less and I can’t do that. I feel this administration is very unique. I do agree with him that the seeds were planted in the past but I think he’s wrong to characterize the Bushes or even Reagan as equally xenophobic.

One of the few things that GW Bush supported that I could agree with was his call for comprehensive immigration reform. But even his own party would not support him on that.

“Build the Wall!” and “Round them up!” has nothing to do with comprehensive reform of a system that is badly in need of overhaul, it is about doing something symbolic to rile up the base of xenophobes who support Trump.

when I was looking for an apartment in Moscow, first thing people said to look for was a gas stove, so that you could keep cooking when the electricity went out (they seldom both went out at the same time) and if the gas went out, you could transfer to a hot plate.

I had a gas cooker in my previous apartment, but here I’ve only got electric appliances. On the bright side, I have heat even when the power is out, because it’s the city that pumps the hot water to all the buildings.

Oh absolutely and I said it constantly- Trump isn’t the GOP’s illness, he is but a symptom but where Trump does stand out is how widespread it is. The GOPers in Congress during Nixon weren’t out right enablers like Nunes, McConnell, Graham, and others are. The cabinet too. I pointed out that there would never be a Saturday Night Massacre in the Trump administration because Whitaker or Barr would fire Mueller without a thought in contrast with Elliott Richardson who did refuse to fire Cox for Nixon. I think him and I got to an understanding on what the other was trying to communicate. I just think it does a disservice to how bad Trump really is to suggest even if not the intention that the past ones were as bad as Trump. I can’t think of a single aspect of Trump’s presidency or personality that deserves praising. I can’t even praise the man as a father and husband ot acknowledge shared hobbies. He’s just an all around awful person.

Trump signed an order to hire 15,000 new border agents two years ago. The company has hired 33 such officers to date. [Los Angeles Times]

I’ve said it before when ‘assimilating’ comes up, and it always bears repeating: Assimilation is a two-way street. Immigrants can put in all the effort into assimilating that they can and it won’t make a fuck of difference if the ‘natives’ refuse to concede any sort of acceptance outside of total ‘passing’.

This is why Europe has its immigration crisis for the most part. Not immigrants ‘refusing’ to assimilate, but societies refusing to see them as potential new citizens, and instead just as warm bodies for work.

Meanwhile….

Clearly, refugees just need to try harder to assimilate.

Right. And TBH as much as I like Europe, historically we’ve been pretty good at welcoming newcomers and Miller’s attitude is disgusting and quite honestly UnAmerican.

If Miller gets thrown in The Hague, it will be a special day.

We just want the Illegals to come to America in the Right way.

Encouraging to hear this! My son is in his sophomore year at community college, will have to take Organic Chem next summer to finish his Associates (engineering major, thinks he may specialize in Chem). I think on issues of comparison it is important to narrowly define parameters being discussed. And that is tough to do on an internet platform. On one measure I would argue that Reagan was worse than trump because Reagan unleashed and popularized all the conservative lies that have damaged our society for forty years. In that one sense, to me Reagan is worse than trump.

re: #41 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

What sparked that exchange with me and others was my questioning the ethics of doxxing those high school kids on social media. Anymouse’s position was racism must be condemned, the kids were in a public space and aware of being recorded, and doxxing them was therefore appropriate. I argued that they are minors and doxxing them was not appropriate, no matter what bullshit they were pulling. We went round and round for a while, with him basically characterizing anyone who would not dox them as racists, or at least condoning racist behavior. We took offense. He left.

Later, he was spotted relating the entire exchange from his POV on Wonkette, and mischaracterizing what we had said.

Whether his non-LGF life was hard at the time, I can’t say. I had just spent the day dealing with a racism issue on my own staff, and I was really in no mood to hear someone tell me I was being a racist because I wouldn’t want those kids doxxed.

Yeah, I’m still pissed about it. I’m sorry he flounced, because he does have valuable insights and contributions to make here. His “my way or I take to the highway” thing gets old, though.

And frankly his anti-Christianity has come to the point of pure bigotry. There are quite a few other atheists here that do not need to fight about it. But his attitude against is like that of a fundamentalist against Islam - there is nothing possible good and it’s proved because X never says Y against Z. I would not tolerate that of an Islamophobe and I’m not willing to tolerate that any more about anyone.

‘It’s Okay to Be White’: Charlottesville Police Won’t Investigate Zeta Phi Beta Mural Defaced By White Supremacists

Charlottesville Police say they will not be investigating an incident in which a popular white supremacist slogan, “It’s Okay to Be White” was tagged over a Zeta Phi Beta mural at the University of Virginia. According to the historically black sorority, members of the UVA chapter of Zeta Phi Beta painted the mural on Beta Bridge, a city-owned University landmark, to honor their Founder’s Day on Jan. 16. By the next morning, the mural was vandalized.

UVA’s student newspaper, the Cavalier Daily, reports the bridge, which is frequently painted on by students, was defaced at about 1 a.m. on Thursday morning. The paper also reported that Charlottesville police are choosing not to investigate the graffiti.

Markiana Smith, president of UVA’s undergraduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, says she and her sorority sisters were “stunned” when they heard about the hateful message.

“It’s a strange place to be when you feel the place that you’ve called home the last few years wanted to stifle you, didn’t want you to speak. Didn’t want you to take up space,” Smith, a fourth-year African American studies major, told The Root.

This kinda shit gives away the game behind ‘It’s Ok To Be White’.

While not condoning any of this (and I’ve called him out on it occasionally — in brief, as I’m not much for beating my head against brick walls), I think this is about his losing his election, and his perception that his surroundings are getting more hostile. Funnily for me, one of my first run-ins and experiences with his stubborn side was on religion even though I’m Agnostic and thus more closer to his perspective on theological questions than yourself but I pointed out more or less that a state outright hostile towards religion like the USSR could have the same problems as a state with church and state together. He didn’t like that. The others in the community got what I was saying. And yeah I’m sorry but he is bigoted against Christians. What he expects out of Christians is reminiscent of what I see people expect from Muslims. Not every last Christian kook deserves a condemnation from liberal Christians like yourself when your best example is how you live your lives and treat people.

The Party wants religion to serve the State, and to give Chinese people some sort of extra moral compass besides the Party’s teachings. I for one am glad we have your perspective as an educator in China. As you know, I took a couple classes on Chinese history. I find what’s happening very fascinating. I believe President Xi is the first Chinese leader to have been born after Mao took power. Cuba is undergoing a similiar thing with Castro’s successor. What really hurt the USSR in the end was how its leaders did not adopt to the new realities. By the time Gorby came along in the mid 80’s, it was too late. Brezhnev is a fascinating yet I think a Soviet leader that does not get enough attention in history even though he was there from LBJ’s presidency to the early years of Reagan- a good chunk of the Cold War.

I get that and I’m Agnostic myself but Christianity like Islam is a big group and there have been comments made about Christians that one would raise a stink eye if they were made about Muslims or a religious minority of any kind. i don’t think Bill or any liberal Christian should have to constantly apologize for the worst elements of their religion just like I don’t feel Muslims should have to for Isis or Al Queda. And I don’t feel as a nonbeliever that I have to justify my lack of belief because historical monsters like Stalin and Mao shared it.

So there are 100 Christians and one atheist. 80 of the Christians are judgmental against atheists and discriminate against them. We all good with that? It’s enough to say “not all do it?”

Remember Falun Gong?

FLG is a curiosity. It has some cult-like aspects, but in general it seems like an offshoot of taoism and Buddhism. The Party doesn’t care for FLG because the group opposes the Party, and the leadership of the FLG were getting too powerful and influential. FLG accuses the Chinese prison system of harvesting organs from inmates, but there’s no way of knowing how valid those accusations are. Walking around Hong Kong, you can find FLG protesters with photos as lurid as the ones anti-choice groups display in the USA. FLG is less obnoxious to passers-by than anti-choice nuts, though.

I am sometimes harsh on religion in general, but especially so on Christianity since that is how I was raised and that is what my direct experiences are. And, in some ways I feel personally responsible for some of the excesses done under its cover.

It is annoying even to me when I say something about “Christians” without being more specific, so I generally, in those cases, put the word in quotes. We need a word for the clearly bad ones, “Mammonites” or “Loud Christians”?

I think that’s a different matter all together. FWIW I’m glad O’Hare was there to protest prayer in school. In fact, even though I’m not religious at all myself, I think you can make a very religious based argument against forced prayer in the sense that prayer should be personal and individual and not forced. A prayer isn’t any good if it’s forced. I liked the line Bill shared from his church on confession: All are welcome to confess, some need it more than others, but no one must. Finding the answers to the great theological questions that face us really should be individual and not coerced at all.

China is becoming more hostile to religion, other than the “state approved” churches.

I wonder why that is: en.wikipedia.org

It’s not surprising that a country that had a religious civil war that killed 50 million people out of about 400 million _might_ have quite strong views against a religion.

History of the Ladder

No one really knows when the ladder was invented. However, the earliest evidence of it is located in Valencia, Spain. The Spider Caves have a Mesolithic rock painting of a ladder that’s about 10,000 years old. This painting shows two men using a ladder to access a wild honeybee nest, most likely to get honey. The painting shows a flexible ladder that was made up of some kind of grass.

While this is the first evidence of the ladder, most researchers are certain it is much older than that. The roots of the functional design of ladders as we know them today, can be traced right back to the ancient Hebrew and Egyptian cultures; these are the civilizations that developed and perfected it. Over the years, different kinds of ladders have been created to suit different purposes.

Given my mother’s history, I could never be a Roman Catholic - my own anti-clerical streak has a very strong (yeah, I’ll call it this) bias in that respect. I found the Episcopalian/Anglican tradition a relief because I could have the ritual I loved with a much saner approach to the issues of authority and teaching. You don’t hear those criticisms leveled at Schultz, who has never had an elected job and whose company sells overpriced shitty coffee (especially outside Seattle, where it’s actually adequately overpriced coffee).

He’s also spewing nonsense and deflecting on taxes affecting corporations.

You’re running for president. Taxes are a huge issue. If you can’t take the heat on taxes, you don’t deserve to be in office, especially the WH.

So, yeah Schultz is a strong no.

She’s been in the Senate the same amount of time as Obama was, was her state’s AG, and was her county DA. They may not like her experience and how she’s done in those experiences but she is definitely qualified and definitely more qualified than Schultz.

You know, the open borders now types can be a bit obnoxious but I definitely wouldn’t mind a solution to both the Mexican and Canadian border that makes it more like the EU. Maybe a little different since our borders are much bigger than those ones but I wouldn’t discount it either.

Agreed. All that this is doing is just sheer assholery that accomplishes nothing and poisons the water between average folk and the mere concept of a border patrol.

Most of the time, there are people who think they can run for President and wind up backing down when it’s obvious to anyone with a pulse that they have no chance in the initial caucuses and primaries.

Here, there are three (Tulsi, Bernie and Schultz**) with the possibility of a fourth (Bloomberg). None of them have a shot of making a dent anywhere but they all want the attention right now, and so do their supporters on social media. But it’s all vaporware.

Economically conservative is where I think he falls. He’s got a Wall Street streak, which makes sense since many of his constituents and donors have jobs thanks to Wall Street and the NYC metro area.

Doesn’t mean he couldn’t support taxes on the millionaire class, but that’s not going to be his primary focus.

Some of the issues that will come up re: Booker are the crime issues in Newark when he was mayor there, the lead in water issue (which came up after he became a US Senator, but probably should have been uncovered sooner), and his support for charter schools, which haven’t delivered the results.

I can’t figure Reagan out because I don’t know too much about the man but I think he was a cynic beneath the sunny optimism that he liked to portray. Now I don’t think his rightward move was exclusively racially based but you can’t tell me that Reagan didn’t have huge racial blinders.

Hispanics mostly self identify as white(because they are) and when you look at the demographic projections there is usually an asterisk that specifies non-hispanic whites. Given a couple generations and they will just be white and the majority will be maintained.

This is the fear. That the left starts infighting because supporters of various top candidates can’t bear to vote for anyone else, there’s a split of left leaning votes and Trump dashes through the middle and wins another term. Republicans may be terrible, but they can unify behind a candidate like nobodys business.

Look again at Frum’s statement: “American men have a gullibility problem”. Except the chart doesn’t show anything except that slightly more than half of American men are not buying Trump’s package. The chart shows American men don’t agree on shit, and the women are only slightly more pissed.

It kind of depends on the candidates. Note that in elections last year, when the primaries ended, in almost all cases the Democratic loser not only backed the winner, but actively campaigned for the winner.

I can only think of a couple of candidates that haven’t followed that pattern in the past, and one of them isn’t a registered Democrat.

Yeah, the data point that got to me over the weekend was the one talking about the exponential increase in oceanic acidification.

It said that at current rates, there may be no more saltwater fish by 2049, because they can no longer survive in the toxic hellbrew that is the world’s oceans. No oceanic algae converting CO2 to oxygen?

I could be argued down to a can of surströmming.

Only in times of war or national emergency, lest the fundamentalist sheep-splitters hold you anathema.

Back to Dems 2020 primary;

there is going to be a ton of ratfucking and half the “supporters” you hear for a lot of candidates are going to be bots doing their best to keep the Dems divided or apathetic or unwilling to vote in the general for anyone but their ideal choice.

And anybody running independent will be seeing a lot of support from mysterious sources

The GOP is already lined up behind Trump so they are going to have nothing better to do than to try to exploit every weakness, real or perceived in the Democratic Party and the DNC.

re: #447 The Ghost of Kung Fu Treachery

I feel the only moral response to someone invoking “the silent majority” is to thrown a bissected sheep carcass at them. And the law should reflect my conviction.

My response is: your “Silent Majority” is silent for a reason. Most of the time, that reason is: they don’t exist.

U.S. Treasury Set to Borrow $1 Trillion for a Second Year to Finance the Deficit

The U.S. Treasury Department is set to maintain elevated sales of long-term debt to finance the government’s widening budget deficit, with new issuance projected to top $1 trillion for a second-straight year.

Many strategists at primary-dealer firms predict that this Wednesday’s quarterly refunding announcement will see the Treasury maintain note and bond sales at the record high levels they have boosted them to in recent months.

The total amount of 3-, 10- and 30-year securities to be offered at next week’s refunding auctions is seen by most at $84 billion. While that’s $1 billion more than the total for these maturities three months ago, that’s only because the size of the three-year sale was already nudged higher in December.

A heightened supply of Treasury securities follows tax cuts and government spending increases implemented under the current administration. That’s darkening a fiscal outlook already made worrisome by rising entitlement-program expenses and higher costs to service America’s nearly $16 trillion in debt. The Federal Reserve’s balance-sheet runoff is also adding to supply, forcing Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to tap the public for more funding.

“We’ve seen deficits continue to blow out,” said Brian Edmonds, head of interest-rates trading at Cantor Fitzgerald in New York. “We are going to see more and more supply.”
