In yet another early morning extended Twitter rant, Donald Trump made a series of surprising admissions, although I’m sure he’d deny that’s what they are. First, he admitted all that boasting he did about “defeating ISIS” was, yes, a lie.

When I became President, ISIS was out of control in Syria & running rampant. Since then tremendous progress made, especially over last 5 weeks. Caliphate will soon be destroyed, unthinkable two years ago. Negotiating are proceeding well in Afghanistan after 18 years of fighting..

It’s gone from wiped out and defeated, to “will soon be destroyed,” and in either case it’s pure bullshit, of course.

Then he admitted that all his boasting about convincing Kim Jong-Un to abandon North Korea’s nuclear weapons program was also…. another lie!

….Fighting continues but the people of Afghanistan want peace in this never ending war. We will soon see if talks will be successful? North Korea relationship is best it has ever been with U.S. No testing, getting remains, hostages returned. Decent chance of Denuclearization…

It’s gone from “denuclearized, yay me!” to a “decent chance of denuclearization.”

This is so pathetic it would be laughable if the subject wasn’t so deadly serious.

He also posted several demented rants about his imaginary border wall, but the last ones I’ll highlight today illustrate what a threat this guy is to US national security.

The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong! When I became President Iran was making trouble all over the Middle East, and beyond. Since ending the terrible Iran Nuclear Deal, they are MUCH different, but….

That may be the first time in history anyone has ever accused US intelligence services of being “passive and naive.” But the fact that we have a president who willfully ignores and attacks them isn’t funny any more — it’s incredibly dangerous.

But I do have to point out the sad irony of a dimwitted con man who says “intelligence should go back to school” — right after beclowning himself by misusing the word “there.”

I could not wait to get of age and get out of small town 70s~80s America to Europe even if that meant a stop at Ft Knox first.

I gave him an earful, including how it’s very clear from his very own dogma (he’s an obnoxious Calvinist whose church organization makes a point of excluding women from any authority) that women are second class. (Behind the lock and key for a couple of tweets.)

Yep. Vaccines have a high success rate, but they aren’t guaranteed. And even then, most times if you don’t get the full immunoresponse, a vaccine will still make the resultant illness much less severe if you do end up catching it. Not to mention that the effects of vaccines DO weaken over time, which is why booster shots are a thing.

Herd immunity - some diseases like measles are so infectious that you need nearly perfect immunization to prevent spread. There are people who can’t get immunized - infants, people who have compromised immunity, and vaccinations protect those folks too.

It protects everyone else.

For some diseases, it’s the difference between life and death - like polio or smallpox. We eradicated smallpox and are almost all the way there with polio but there are pockets of polio in the wild. Measles was virtually eliminated in the US until the antivaxxers latched on to the bogus MMR vaccine-autism link.

For other diseases, it’s a life or death or serious complications, like the flu. You can prevent/limit the spread, or even reduce how bad it’s going to hit you if you do get it (and you can get it despite getting vaccinated).

My personal take is that federal law should be enacted that all religious exceptions to vaccination are null and void because of public safety. Only way to avoid vaccination is if you are immune compromised. And it should be at the federal level because travel/transit means anyone can cross state lines and infect people (and we get stories about this regularly - like people who travel overseas, stop at multiple airports, and potentially expose thousands of people in the process).

My Grandmother made the best damn fried chicken in the whole fucking world. Period.

She grew up on a farm in Missouri. She used an unconscionable amount of salt. She didn’t coat it with buttermilk or anything like that. The parts were dredged in flour mixed with salt and pepper. She fried in Crisco, in two pans - one wide, flat skillet and a second tall-sided pan with a lid. She turned it with a fork. She was always moving pieces from pan to pan, taking the lid off for a bit, putting it back on for a bit, raising the heat, and lowering the heat, all for no obvious reason.

None of us who watched her and have tried to replicate the magic have come close.

I think the missing ingredient in most pot roasts is time. Getting the meat to the right consistency takes longer than one expects. And at a lower heat.

No, not really double frying. This was strictly pan-fried, with the Crisco no more than about 1/2” deep.

The pieces went into one pot or the other at the start, and just moved from one to the other. And back. My best guess is that the lidded pan served as sort of an oven to heat from top and bottom, whereas the open pan heated only from the bottom.

I suspect she turned the heat up and down based on the sound the bubbling oil was making, and lid on/lid off based on how the pieces were browning.

Pan fried chicken is a balancing between cooking the meat and browning the crust.

Nah. I don’t think it’s the oil. I think that battery’s a couple years old, and while it holds up just fine in warmer weather, the extreme cold just sucked the juice right out of it. Sometimes freezing a battery will also kill it. A warm battery is a happy battery. I used to take ‘em out in some of my old cars back in the 70s during cold snaps. Take it in the house, put it on a wood plank somewhere warm. It takes a few minutes to hook it back up, but it is faster than running a cold battery down and having to deal with it.

An engineering student at UCF was arrested after police discovered he was keeping a fully-automatic AR-15 in his car at an on-campus dorm, authorities said.

UCF police began investigating Max Bennett Chambers, 19, after receiving a tip that he possessed drop-in auto sears, which can be used to convert a semiautomatic rifle into an automatic weapon.

According to an affidavit, Chambers allowed police to search his vehicle at the Towers at Knights Plaza, a complex of apartment-style dorm towers on the main campus. The AR-15 was found inside the vehicle and Chambers admitted to owning it, police said.

Marshall issued a subpoena to Thomas Jefferson to produce documents, and contemplated issuing a subpoena for Jefferson to appear and give testimony. He decided against the testimony subpoena after determining the produced documents were sufficient.

She grew up on a farm in Missouri. She used an unconscionable amount of salt. She didn’t coat it with buttermilk or anything like that. The parts were dredged in flour mixed with salt and pepper. She fried in Crisco, in two pans - one wide, flat skillet and a second tall-sided pan with a lid. She turned it with a fork. She was always moving pieces from pan to pan, taking the lid off for a bit, putting it back on for a bit, raising the heat, and lowering the heat, all for no obvious reason.

None of us who watched her and have tried to replicate the magic have come close.

I haven’t watched this YouTube yet, I had watched the show. I don’t know if the YouTube is the whole interview as it seemed longer than that.

Nicole was fairly upset at Schmidt, you could tell she was questioning it, but they are friends, so maybe she couldn’t really let him have it. I don’t know if all of that is in the YouTube video.

Herd immunity - some diseases like measles are so infectious that you need nearly perfect immunization to prevent spread. There are people who can’t get immunized - infants, people who have compromised immunity, and vaccinations protect those folks too.

It protects everyone else.

For some diseases, it’s the difference between life and death - like polio or smallpox. We eradicated smallpox and are almost all the way there with polio but there are pockets of polio in the wild. Measles was virtually eliminated in the US until the antivaxxers latched on to the bogus MMR vaccine-autism link.

For other diseases, it’s a life or death or serious complications, like the flu. You can prevent/limit the spread, or even reduce how bad it’s going to hit you if you do get it (and you can get it despite getting vaccinated).

My personal take is that federal law should be enacted that all religious exceptions to vaccination are null and void because of public safety. Only way to avoid vaccination is if you are immune compromised. And it should be at the federal level because travel/transit means anyone can cross state lines and infect people (and we get stories about this regularly - like people who travel overseas, stop at multiple airports, and potentially expose thousands of people in the process).

Antivaxxers immediately scream “There’s no such thing as herd immunity!!” Don’t like the word “herd”, I guess. My response is always that if there’s no such thing as herd immunity, then there’s no such thing as a subcritical mass of plutonium. Any amount, no matter how small, will explode. The arithmetic is exactly the same.

In the classical senses of the term, both conservatives and progressives have their place in government. The problem is that both political parties have slowly been edging toward the conservative side ever since the Southern Strategy exposed conservative voters as a politically reliable power base. We don’t have any political party that is truly “progressive”; think about how radical the idea of single-payer health care is even to the modern Democratic Party… and contrast with the fact that many other civilized countries already have such a thing.

Sometimes freezing a battery will also kill it. A warm battery is a happy battery. I used to take ‘em out in some of my old cars back in the 70s during cold snaps. Take it in the house, put it on a wood plank somewhere warm. It takes a few minutes to hook it back up, but it is faster than running a cold battery down and having to deal with it.

Batteries get so cold in that open-underneath engine compartment. I miss my VWs. In the Squareback it was under the back seat and in the 412s it was under the driver’s seat. Stayed much warmer.

Just got home.

-20 on the drive. Low wind (so only -34 wind chill) but a clear crisp sky with Orion’s belt as clear as it is cold. Supposed to hit -30 tonight.

Hot water heater is not flowing but the cold is fine because I left it running a trickle. Next time both sides get cracked open. Well, I can shower at work easily (the best thing about working at a hotel is the options when housing problems arise.). Now to make supper and a mug of tea.

I had a ‘74 Audi 100 LS. It was under the back seat behind the driver.

That was a car unloved by mechanics, but a dream in the snow and on ice. Great car all around. The only thing I didn’t like was it was an automatic. Would have loved to have had it as a 4 speed. Drove the hell out of it.

A few years ago I got together with my best friends from high school to re-record a couple of songs from a demo we had done. We actually put out an album in 1982, but the quality sucked. So one member who has done ok financially paid for the recording and also to remaster the album for CD and other platforms. Anyway….

He just shared with me that he’s made a whole $12 since the last check from various accumulated sources (which was less that $12 as i recall). Someone paid for about 1/2 with a $6 purchase. The rest were mostly 0.01 payments from iTunes, Spotify, and, yes NAPSTER. That thing still exists? But hey! 35 years later we’re ready to catch on!

The 73 LandRover has 2 times 12 volts in a bank just under the drivers right elbow. That much power has never failed it, but it has a hand crank just in case.
