Sort of on topic- I can’t remember which lizard mentioned the little 1 watt Marshall, but I mentioned it to my wife and she said what I assume every wife says when new gear is mentioned. “You should just get one.” So I did, and I love it a bunch. The sounds of screaming tubes with no accompanying eviction notice!
So a belated thank you to whoever posted about it. (Not too surprisingly, a Seymour Duncan P-rail bridge pickup sounds quite nice through it.)
So, just to recap, wingnuts have compared the following acts to the Gestapo:
- The early-morning raid of Paul Manafort’s home, which turned up documents that he had attempted to hide from federal investigators and likely would have destroyed had he been given prior notice.
- The raid of Michael Cohen’s office, again turning up documentation that he was attempting to shield from investigators, most of which did not fall under “attorney-client privilege” as he and Trump contested.
- The early-morning arrest of Roger Stone and seizure of electronic devices. No word yet on whether anything of value has been acquired, but considering Mueller’s track record to date, odds are they found a lot of data that Stone either tried to hide or thought he’d successfully destroyed.
By contrast, what did wingnuts think was a total disgrace to law enforcement and a failure by the FBI?
- Allowing Hillary Clinton to surrender her email server and consult an outside law firm to go through the documents on said server before turning them over, rather than having the FBI kick down the door and seize the server at gunpoint.

I remember Ohio having natural gas shortages back in late January of 1977. At times they cut back on the gas pressure to use less, and they also asked for as many closures and low heat setting they could for about 2 or 3 weeks.

He characterizes Facebook, Google, Uber, Airbnb and others as modern-day rentiers, who are every bit as guilty of living off the hard work of others as landlords and investment bankers. Like Piketty, he warns against the increasing divide between haves and have-nots worldwide, and reminds the haves what eventually happens when the have-nots get fed up.

Can’t say I’m surprised, to be honest. I teach a few students that work at the shopping mall closest to me; they’re mall managers, and they’ve also noticed that online shopping is slowly but surely starting to come into play here in Czech Republic as well.
I’ve done online shopping plenty of times - the sad truth is that many products I’m searching for simply don’t exist here in Czech Republic, and I have little other choice but to buy them online. Also, cost is a factor; online prices are typically 30% to 40% cheaper than their brick-and-mortar competitors and many of these online shops now offer free shipping and returns.
Why go to the store when I can have it in a couple of days, or a couple of weeks at the most, and save myself some money to boot?

Hyper-specialization is allowing for an economy where the producer-to-consumer path by steps the middle man. While it is sad that people and local retailers lose their jobs, their jobs were part of a culture that itself has been rather short in the long span of human existence.
The spice traders of old were the ancestors of Amazon. Supplying the colder realms of Eurasia with plant products from the tropics, the retailers in ancient times were the earlier middle-men. But on the local economy, life existed on the farm, and the local villages bought from the farmers.
Even in more recent times… looking at probate records from the early 19th century I come across receipts and bills, often not from the local retailer, but from the local tradesman. For example, that a deceased person owed the miller, or the local carpenter. That was a direct link from the producer to the consumer.

I think the problem with our society is we get amnesia too easily. Certainly that helped Bush’s rise in 2000 or the Republican “Revoluton” in 1994 or the Tea Party rise in 2010 and later Trump in 2016. The past gets overglamorized by people who never had to live it or if they did live have an agenda in wanting to ignore the worst parts of it. TBH I’m optimistic about defeating Trump next fall. But where I’m more uncertain is preventing this from happening again. The next Democratic president is going to have their hands full. And note to progressives, we’re not going to get all we want done. Some things may not be accomplished. I think the problem with our society is we get amnesia too easily. Greets and saluts from the frozen tundra of the NYC metro area. It’s frickin cold here, but Mount Washington is laughing at all of us complaining. They’re currently experiencing near hurricane force winds and a wind chill of -79 degrees. Air temp is -25.9 with no wind there.

What’s also nuts is trying to fight fires in this weather. The fire at the Marcal factory that began last night continues today, and ended up burning down the entire factory - multiple buildings totally gone. I doubt the parent company will rebuild. 200+ people are likely out of a job. There’s another big fire in Brooklyn that is still not under control, and then there was a fire at Newark Airport that burned a bunch of cars on the roof of the parking garage.
But you know what’s bugnuts insane? Trump and his insistence on building a wall, and then tweeting nonsense about how he’s already building a wall, and the cognitive dissonance from all his wall-related tweets, because he’s lying throughout, and wants people to think he’s building a wall, that a wall isn’t built, that we need a wall, that a wall works, and that if we don’t we’ll see high crime.
All of these are demonstrably untrue. Crime is at or near historic lows across the US. Border cities actually are at low crime levels. Walls aren’t stopping visa overstays, which are the main reason people are here illegally (and companies like Trump’s hire undocumented persons because they’re cheaper than getting Americans to do the jobs).
The reality is that Trump’s wall is to keep nonwhites out. His immigration policy is predicated on it. His policies are about preventing nonwhites from seeking asylum. He doesn’t want nonwhites coming here. And his bigot base cheers it on.

I was surprised to see there are now two Swaminarayan Temples in Louisville. This one was established about five years ago. There’s another out toward the east, as well as a separate, older temple (non-denominational??) not far from where my stepson lives. I’ve got several friends who are members of the older one.

While the state government raised objections and thought it was negotiating over how any shipments might be conducted safely, behind the scenes the plutonium was already arriving. I was fortunate to have many Muslim classmates from an early age. Diversity really can be a great builder for maturity. I still remember when I visited my hometown’s mom and pop kabob place and the owner, an Afghani man telling my mom about how her boys (my brother’s and I were all grown up.) That guy was never an outsider. Just a part of the community.

I think it’s time for the Batman films to focus on something already established in the comics but only alluded to once in the movies: Bruce Wayne isn’t the ONLY one who can be Batman.
That’s why I favor a story idea of an older, broken down Bruce Wayne mentoring someone else Obi-Wan Kenobi style to take over the cape. Focus on the fact that Batman is more an idea than he is a man. He’s a figure who represents something important regardless of who is underneath the cowl.
That’s one of the things I liked about the ending of The Dark Knight Rises - Blake (Robin John Blake, specifically) is given the keys to the Batcave. And even though it’s not overtly stated, it’s a pretty good guess that he becomes Batman, as Bruce Wayne had told him in TDKR that Batman is, as you put it, more of an idea than a man.

- pence doesnt resign unless it turns out they really got the goods on him
- there wont be any ‘grand bargain’ cause trump will renege the minute pence is gone and nominate someone else. (whether he’s being impeached at the time or not)- because there is a mechanism here - the president, while still the president, even while being impeached has the right to nominate a vp.

But let’s say he does resign. Yes, Trump gets to appoint a new VP. But that VP must be confirmed by both Houses of Congress. So, if he reneges on some agreeable grand bargain nominee; the House can take it up, and vote against confirmation. In that case, it doesn’t matter what the Senate does or doesn’t do (could McConnell try and speed the nomination through the Senate on a party line vote? Yes, he could, but given the nature of the appointment, I’m not sure how many Republicans would be on board with that). If Trump doesn’t nominate someone that can get through both chambers, and he is indeed impeached/removed, then the presidency transfers to Pelosi.
It’s an absolute nightmare and constitutional crisis the likes we’ve never really seen. And so far outside of normal that nobody has really considered it except in the most fantastical novels/TV shows.

When Ford was nominated/confirmed, Nixon nominated him October 12. The Senate confirmed him 92-3 on November 27; the House voted 387-25 to confirm December 6, and he took the oath of office about an hour later.
