Let’s be honest, if Donny came out next year and declared that a “national emergency” meant we couldn’t hold elections and he’d have to stay in power “for the duration,” there would be a sizable chunk of our voting age population who would welcome such an announcement. People freaked out when surveyors from the Army Corps of Engineers went through and basically cut down swathes of brush at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas to lay down where the border wall would go through back in mid-2017. A lot of damage was done and locals were Not Happy. I went to college with a couple of prominent people in Mission. I’m thinking all hell will break loose if the Trump admin tries to go in by force and take the land for the wall. I think there could be a LOT of local pushback. Virtually all of the border land east of El Paso is privately owned and some of it has been in some families since before Texas became a state.

That would be a political nightmare for the GOP: A farmer or rancher being injured by Army troops sent in to seize land for a barrier wall on Trump’s orders. At this point, even his own wingnut base would struggle to support him blindly.

possible that Mitch escapes, he’s been in business for quite some time, but he does have some Russian money in his closet (I’ve read multiple of millions) and those GOP campaigns did have to get some guidance from someone in the GOP to point them in the proper direction and distribute the money where it was needed most. Chicago sucks in the winter, especially because of the wind. But the coldest night for plain temperature I ever spent was in Mad-Wis, way back in the young-young day. It was 35 below, and I was delivering pizzas. The Jeeps we drove (WWII Jeeps, not Cherokees or anything like that) had warming ovens for the pies, but even so, at that temp you had to move fast between vehicle and customer door to keep the pizza from going ice cold. Still, the 35 below isn’t the only reason I remember that night: At my last stop on the run, I jumped out and grabbed the order and started for the house—and saw a freakin badger huddled right against the door, I guess trying to get some warmth from the inside. A wild damn badger, only one I ever saw in Wisconsin. I wasn’t about to go up and ring the doorbell, and this was way before cell phones were even a gleam in the eye of the maddest nerds, so I drove back to the shop and had the manager call the customer, who said forget the pie and that he hoped the badger would be gone before he had to go to work the next day.
P.S. Either this comment or the one before I believe was my two thousandth on LGF. Not so very many over the course of nine years or so, and most of them no more profound than this one, but I can’t think of anybody I’d rather have sat on the porch and talked with than all of you all. Thanks.

Citco did hav the capacity to crack Venezuelan crude, but they have retoole$ their refineries to different specs now that they aren’t importing as much. But, your basic point still stands. It costs money to change specs and Venezuelan crude isn’t great stuff.

The gaping hole in the ice has a footprint two-thirds the size of Manhattan and is tall enough to fit the Statue of Liberty three times over. In other words, no dentist is fixing this. Instead, it could potentially spell doom for not just Manhattan but other coastal areas by speeding along the destruction of Thwaites, pushing more land ice into the sea.
Thwaites Glacier is located in West Antarctica, an area that is facing what could be runaway melt owing to geography and inescapable heat. The bedrock under Thwaites and other glaciers in the region slopes downward further inland, allowing that warm water to rot out the glaciers from underneath. The region is the fastest melting part of Antarctica, and losing the land ice could lead to more than 10 feet of sea level rise.
The discovery of cavity beneath Thwaites Glacier along with a number of other disconcerting features offer a new wrinkle to the harrowing tale of West Antarctica. Scientists used a combination of ice-penetrating radar flown on NASA planes and European satellite data to capture what’s going on. The measurements resolve fine-scale details of what happens where the ice meets the bedrock. Or, it turns out more accurately, where the ice doesn’t meet the bedrock.

The United States will pull out of a nuclear arms control treaty with Russia, the Trump administration announced Friday, ending a cornerstone Cold War agreement on grounds that Russian violations render it moot.The demise of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty raises fears of a new nuclear arms race, although U.S. officials discount the risk.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States is suspending participation in the agreement, starting a six-month countdown to a final U.S. withdrawal. That leaves a slim chance that Russia could end missile programs widely seen as a violation, salvaging the treaty. The United States accuses Moscow of violating the agreement since 2014.
It’s hard to say who benefits more from this decision. I can guess, though.

Mixed messages on jobs this week. On Thursday, the report on initial unemployment claims unexpectedly increased to 253,000, the highest level in a year and a half. But today’s jobs report showed 304,000 jobs created in January. Keep in mind that January number could be substantially revised; December’s 312,000 jobs created was revised down 90,000 to only 222,000. 2018’s jobs gains at 2,674,000 was the best year of gains in the last three years. Average hourly earnings have increased 3.2% over the last year which is better but still not at the level one would expect if we were actually at full employment. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4%, indicating that more people are looking for jobs, which is a good sign. bls.gov

Everything that’s been said about the FBI’s history with respect to the KKK (and the other white supremacist groups) is correct… but it was people in the “violent penumbra” of the Antifa movement who did $500,000 worth of damage (plus bodily harm) when they showed up to protest Milo on the Berkeley campus. That wasn’t the only such incident either. Keeping an eye on them AS WELL doesn’t strike me as a bad idea.

Oh, other parts of the UK are getting hit, the South of England and the East coast are getting the snow at the moment, as well as the West coast of Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
In fact, I’m quite surprised Glasgow’s not been hit yet, although apparently we’re going to get some snow on Monday.

I also want to mention just how important it is for people at the margins of the economy for job growth to continue, people the bankers at the Fed rarely think about in their obsession with squashing even the possibility of the inflation rate exceeding 2% (which is suppose to just be a goal anyway, not a hard ceiling). Unemployment among high school graduates and African-Americans has dropped significantly in the last year, and the disabled are getting more job opportunities, so Trump is actually right that the Fed doesn’t need to be in a rush to raise interest rates. Unfortunately Trump is such a moron he is reportedly considering the appointment of Herman Cain, who is a hard money guy, to the Board of Governors.

As an aside, I watched the documentary Get Me Roger Stone, part of which concerned how, in order to destroy the Reform Party, Roger first encouraged Pat Buchanan to run for its presidential nomination, then encouraged Trump to join the Reform party and flirt with a run, calling Pat Buchanan a racist (which of course he is). And that pretty much destroyed the Reform Party.

Ditto education. I’ve taught a lot of smart students in China, and many would like to study abroad, but their biggest obstacle (aside from parents wanting them to stay close) is the cost. Financial assistance for foreign students is almost non-existent, so it’s only the wealthy kids who can study abroad. Sadly, many of them only go because their parents see it as a way to build family prestige, and some of the kids just spend their university time abroad partying and hanging out only with other Chinese students. I hear about those slackers and think how I wish I could replace them with some of my students who would actually benefit from the time overseas.

It actually started out as a Crown colony in 1713, but since 2002 it’s officially been a British overseas territory. It does have it’s own parliament, but it’s kind of a devolved parliament, and the head of state is the Queen, represented by a governor, just like in the old colonial days!

Rachel Maddow is a politics junkie. She discusses politics good and bad and for the most part keeps it all in context.
I think it would be bad education wise to not have some of the political junkies talking about someone like Pat Buchanan. He was in a lot of campaigns and with some staffs. So he does know how the insides of some unpopular presidents and campaigns, etc. work.
I don’t think it means she actually likes all of what she talks about. It does mean she likes to know what it all means to us citizens. That’s why I think she is the best political show on TV. She can hide her own feelings to get the best out of her guests.

That last bit there is one that gives me pause, because as a former science teacher, I wonder if I really communicated the idea as well as I wanted to. Our department really tried to give our students a unified picture of science, that each subject worked from the same basic principles of scientific investigation. We tried to find texts that showed how science is done, too. But communicating those kind of abstract ideas to high school students is tough. Some get it. A lot don’t. Too much science education focuses on content and not much on process.

Take Louisville, KY, for example. Not a big city in terms of population, but quite diverse — in some sections of town. It’s still quite segregated by race and income level, but taken as a whole, it’s a bit like the UN.

I made one visit to the LA area, ummm, lots of decades ago. Visited friends that lived WAY up in the mountains, looking out over the Mojave Desert. They said they could see 200 miles, off to the northeast. And my husband, who had been there before, said that was right! Beautiful! So for our visit, it was totally socked in in fog. Couldn’t see to the end of their driveway. So I used my imagination, and it was really beautiful!
And driving up their road, we went over a bump. They told me, oh, that was the San Andreas Fault. I thought, boy, they live on the wrong side of that!!!

I lost my temper with that CENSORED and told her to go intercourse herself because she was killing people and fleecing them out of whatever equity they had.

The DC metro area has had kiosk rentable bike (ours are red) for quite a while now. We also now have the park anywhere and use your phone to unlock, bikes. MD law states that bikes have equal rights to the road way, so they can take a whole lane. DC has many dedicated biking lanes with more being added all the time. Bicycles are great for metro areas. Bikes here are not docked for the most part, so cities are struggling with rented bikes being left in bizarre places, or parked in such numbers that people can’t walk on the sidewalks or enter buildings. My uni here finally had to require students to park the bikes in designated areas, because they were blocking the entrances to the classroom buildings.
There are at least four different bike rental companies here competing with one another, so there is a glut.

Stowe didn’t name student Nick Sandmann in his op-ed for the Lexington Herald-Leader and kentucky.com. But Sandmann’s parents have hired lawyers who say they plan to file “a multitude of civil lawsuits”.
Stowe wrote the column Jan. 23 after the boys were criticized by other Catholic leaders, including Bishop Roger Foys of the Diocese of Covington. Foys has since apologized for his quick condemnation of the students’ conduct and said a full investigation is under way.

The Louisville Metro Police Department announced Friday that it has made an arrest related to the vandalism of a Hindu temple in Buechel earlier this week, which LMPD Chief Steve Conrad called a hate crime.
Detective Sgt. Russell Montfort said that a 17-year-old white male was charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief on Thursday afternoon. This juvenile confessed to the crime and was charged less than three hours after the detective received a tip that morning, Montfort said.
LMPS does not release the identity of those charged with crimes who are under the age of 18, but Montfort said that the juvenile was a student in Jefferson County Public Schools.

I agree with you that the best way (from the US perspective) is to address INF violations beforehand by sanctions.
It seems to me that Trump has been saying that the US would not respond to intermediate range missiles if they are launched at Europe.
As I understand it, the US position by treaty, currently (what Trump is trying to change), is that if Intermediate range missiles are launched at us, or NATO, we _will_ respond. All the way up, and including, with nuclear weapons.
And, again, I agree, it is far easier to respond to intermediate range missiles before they are launched, or deployed.

I agree with you that the best way (from the US perspective) is to address INF violations beforehand by sanctions.
It seems to me that Trump has been saying that the US would not respond to intermediate range missiles if they are launched at Europe.
As I understand it, the US position by treaty, currently (what Trump is trying to change), is that if Intermediate range missiles are launched at us, or NATO, we _will_ respond. All the way up, and including, with nuclear weapons.
And, again, I agree, it is far easier to respond to intermediate range missiles before they are launched, or deployed.
Agree. I think I left out that you can’t immediately respond to intermediate range weapons the same way you can with long range ones - MAD - thus preventing their use. There’s no good way to stop them our counter them early.
I think we all agree that Trump is seriously messing things up, and unlike his domestic crap, this can’t be reversed by justing having a new president.
