Armed Trump supporter detained by police after bursting into library to protest drag queen storytime

James Greene Sr. (Pistol packin’ storytime protestor)

James “Doc” Greene Sr. was detained by police after barging into a Houston library to protest a scheduled drag queen storytime for children. Greene has previously been banned from the library for similar antics - including filming children without permission.

Greene had a concealed weapon and was disarmed by officers.

A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department told OutSmart Magazine that Greene entered the building about 15 minutes before the program was to being. Police were called when he refused to leave.

“A manager asked us for assistance because [Greene] was banned from the library, and would not leave when he was asked,” Silva says. “He was previously banned for filming children at the library, and has been known to cause disturbances. Several officers had to escort him out.”

Greene refused to cooperate with officers and was taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains.

The District Attorney has declined to press charges.

They should press charges. Think a drag queen going in guns a blazing to a church would get off easy? This guy will do this shit again.

“…Doc has a bachelor’s degree in ministry and when he is not calibrating TVs he and his band go to nursing homes and entertain the folks as Blues Other Brothers.
Doc has had a long interest in politics and its effect on the American family. Though he was a registered Republican for many years and was often the only representative to state conventions from his precinct, he is now a Tea Party supporter, True the Vote volunteer, and recently nominated by his Texas Nationalist Movement group for outreach director.”

Here’s some more intrigue about the QuadrigaCX cryptocurrency exchange failure.

As I understand it, there was a separate company charged with serving as the payment processor, a kind of go-between for Quadriga and its clients. People would wire money to Costodian using an established payment processor called Billerfy (like PayPal), and Costodian would then hold the funds and direct Quadriga to issue the client an equivalent amount of tokens to use on the exchange. Costodian’s sole officer, Jose Reyes, allegedly transferred some of the funds held by Costodian into his own personal accounts.

From December 2017 to February 2018, 388 individuals or corporations (“Depositors”) made 465 total deposits in the aggregate amount of approximately $67 million into accounts held by Costodian with CIBC. Jose Reyes (“Reyes”), the sole officer and director of Costodian, transferred a portion of the Disputed Funds to his own personal accounts with CIBC.

The 388 clients want their money back, but Reyes, Cotten (now deceased) and Billerfy say they are entitled to the funds. The bank holding the accounts is seeking the courts resolve the issue.
canlii.org

So, we have people entrusting their money (a lot of money) to a sole proprietor, who then tells another sole proprietor how much vapormoney to award them to play around with. One sole proprietor seemingly tries to abscond with some of the money, and the other conveniently dies on the other side of the world, having previously refused to confirm whether users had been credited the amount of vapormoney they were expecting. No one knows the passcodes to extract the cryptocurrencies, so the users can’t withdraw their cryptos or trade them for dollars to be wired them. The bank has sent the disputed funds to the court to hold until such time as it resolves who is entitled to the money. Meanwhile, QuadrigaCX has filed for bankruptcy, tying even more money up where people cannot get to it.

This is either a colossal exit scam got wrong, or a total clusterfuck of financial mismanagement.

So yeah, the reason the wingnuts want Northam gone is not because they believe he’s a racist (they don’t) or that they think there’s anything wrong with being one (they don’t). They want him gone because they want the abortion rights bill presently being discussed in the General Assembly squashed dead and getting the guy who beat Corey Stewart like a red-headed stepchild in the process counts as a twofer.

I don’t believe for a sec that this is something that was unearthed just today. I agree with a sentiment downstairs that the VA GOP knew about these yearbook entries but kept them under their hat because their chosen nominee was a neo-Confederate and they didn’t really want to get into that discussion. Which is why the timing of this release, the day after he got raked over the coals by the wingnut media for endorsing the abortion bill, makes more sense than someone just happening to crack open their old yearbook and stumbling upon these pictures.

There was a time when the distinction between the private sphere and the public sphere was not as blurred as it is now with social networks, and appearing at a private party in an offensive costume was not as serious a matter.

But not one to be overlooked.

And again, the GOP is not upset about the blackface or the KKK, just over the D in front of his name.

It also illustrates why I am hesitant to use the term “racist” or “racism” without fully considering the context and the people involved.

62
Decatur Deb  Feb 2, 2019 • 4:39:36am

There is a difference between stupidly posing in a Klan costume as an offensive joke and wearing one to a cross-burning. There is a difference between dropping your hand on a woman’s ass at a political photo-op and groping a woman in the office supply room.

The differences don’t matter. This is not the Age of Subtlety.

Good Morning.

I hate starlings….thanks Eugene

In 1890, he released 60 starlings into New York City’s Central Park. He did the same with another 40 birds in 1891. Schieffelin wanted to introduce all the birds mentioned in the plays of William Shakespeare to North America. He may have also been trying to control the same pests that had been annoying him thirty years earlier, when he sponsored the introduction of the house sparrow to North America.

European starlings were not native to North America. Schieffelin imported the starlings from England. Scientists estimate that descendants from those two original released flocks now number at more than 200 million residing in the United States.

People back then did not fully understand the principles of Darwinian evolution. In their native environments, species reach equilibrium with other species. Take them out of that environment, and they either die off from disease, predation or starvation, or thrive because there’s nothing to keep their population in check.

OTOH, there’s the horse, which did most of its evolving in concert with the vegetation of western North America and coincidentally got reintroduced a few thousand years after its extirpation. The plains and Great Basin might be better off if we stopped our occasional runs of treating it as an invasive species.

There seem to be a few steps missing in Col. Davis’ argument. From where I sit, if people would have held Trump responsible for his adult actions, he would be a used car salesman in East Bumfuck.

Depends: which party are they in?

I’m serious, if what happened to Northam happened to the exact same politician and he had an (R) next to his name rather than a (D), you’d see his party circle the wagons and let him ride it out. Fuck, Jim Jordan is still a fucking Congressperson in good standing.

Accountability is only for Democrats, clearly. Northam should be held accountable, but fuck, also use this as a teaching moment to show that the GOP doesn’t give a fuck about this shit outside of pointless PR moments. How long did it take for Steve King to see any accountability…and how long with that actual accountability last anyhow?

Some people would be forgiving and others would not be so generous. Ignoring it until that is no longer possible makes it more likely that people will be less forgiving.

Northam thought ignoring this incident in his past was the way to go.

THe sooner in their runs it’s exposed, the more opportunity they’d have to actually explain how they’ve changed and pivot it to a learning point. This far in, it’s usually too late. Especially since even if Dems tried to circle the wagons, the media would crucify anyone caught like this in ways they’d never do for GOPers.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Northam’s called a presser for today, which all but signals that he’s resigning today.

Lots of folks who are running for president have weighed on Northam. It’s precisely as you would expect.

Democrats are calling for him to be gone. Trump is silent. Bernie and Biden are so far silent.

Yeah, GOPers are fucking hypocrites when they’re calling for Northam to be gone too - they continue backing the likes of Scalise and King, despite both being full blown white supremacists. And then there’s Trump. Trump’s a white supremacist pushing white supremacist policies. He’s equated goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them. He backed the white supremacists who were marching to protect statues of Confederates erected by white supremacists to remind blacks of their place in society.

Virginia Democrats should call for enacting a law to tear down all remaining Confederate statues across the state and erecting new monuments to remind everyone of the actual history - that the Confederates were insurrectionists who lost the war they initiated because they wanted to preserve the institution of slavery.

And the GOP can go pound sand.

Okay, I think you’re illustrating the problem here that a lot of PoC have explained. Blackface and the KKK are and weren’t funny then either. They were never funny. The former a symbol of dehumanizing mockery and the latter, a domestic terrorist group that made life a living hell for thousands of African-Americans for generations to the point where many African-American families left the South for the North. A medical student, one going into the Army no less after his graduation should have known better than to pose as a KKK member or in blackface. I’m definitely aware of how social media has changed how much of our lives are open for the world to see but I can tell you this much having parents around Northam’s age, I would be genuinely horrified if I had learned one of them appeared in KKK garb or blackface in 1984, three years before my birth and one year after their marriage. That doesn’t mean I think Northam is a bad person but this really is a bad look.

To be honest, I preferred Perriello since I thought the time was right for a fresh and progressive voice and I thought Perriello had a wide variety of experiences not just in Congress but in the Obama State Department as well that prepared him best to be our first post-Trump election governor. But I liked Lt. Governor Northam. He seemed likable. There were questions that did come up about him having voted for Bush in 2004 and being courted to switch parties (that’s another reason why the attempt to make this ZOMG LIBERAL NORTHAM HAR HAR) are bs but the questions were about the above and him being too connected with Dominion Power.

Right, I get that too. I just can’t shrug this off. Brooks’ humor and I think even kids get is at the expense of the Nazis and KKK. They may not get the finer satire of having a hippie nicknamed LSD play Hitler but they will understand that the comedy is designed to mock the Nazis/KKK rather than their victims. I haven’t seen anything in the Northam photo that suggest that this was to mock the KKK.

This is true. However, I think some context is important too. This appears to be a photo of some sort of costume party, like a Halloween party or something. It doesn’t seem to be a KKK gathering. It doesn’t seem to be a gathering for any particular racist cause. I think there’s a difference between having the bad judgement to be an actual white supremacist and having the bad judgement and white blindness to think that dressing that way for a costume party is okay.

The latter isn’t okay either, of course. It reeks of white privilege. It’s even less okay today than it was back then. I think questioning the past judgement of our leaders is valid, but I think some context is necessary.

I definitely didn’t think Al Franken should have resigned. This, I am less sure about. I don’t think Ralph Northam is a secret white supremacist. I think he was a privileged white man in a culture that ignored its racist parts and that he’s done better in the intervening 35 years than many of his peers, but it’s still pretty gross to look at that photo and think of it as a treasured memory, rather than something embarrassing. Again, though, whatever he does and whatever we do, it must be done because it is the right thing and the just thing. It must not be done out of concern for what Republicans, and the Republican mouthpiece that is the US media, will say. What they will say can never be a concern.

Should be a bigger story than it is… Trumps admin or minions are abusing the system to hold off protests and prevent oversightLA Times

Immigrant rights attorneys and journalists denied entry into Mexico
The two attorneys who were denied entry into Mexico, Nora Phillips and Erika Pinheiro, are leaders of Al Otro Lado, a nonprofit group based in Los Angeles and Tijuana that has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

In 2017, the group filed a lawsuit accusing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency of unlawfully depriving asylum seekers access to the U.S. asylum process.

In recent months, Al Otro Lado has sent lawyers to Tijuana to advise members of a Central American migrant caravan that arrived late last year at the Mexican border city. Some of the caravan’s members are seeking asylum in the U.S. Al Otro Lado recently partnered with two members of Congress to escort a group of asylum seekers to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, where the group waited overnight until Customs and Border Protection officials agreed to accept the migrants for processing.

Phillips, the legal and litigation director for Al Otro Lado, said she was detained Thursday evening after flying to Guadalajara for a planned vacation with her husband and 7-year-old daughter.

Northam backer: Ralph, no one can tell if that is you in either the blackface or the KKK sheets. So, just claim it isn’t you?

Northam: But I already said it was me.

Northam backer: Just tell them it was wild times, and you liked beer a lot, so you couldn’t remember if that was you. But you checked this calendar (we just made up for you) and it showed you were out of town that weekend, so it couldn’t be you.

I really really hope that report is wrong and he does the right thing here. As I said, I was really disappointed that he didn’t show solidarity with Lt. Governor Fairfax on the Lee thing. I really hope that this forces my state to have a conversation about the KKK, blackface, and the CSA. I’m skeptical TBH since there are too many white Virginians who don’t but we need to. Just last night, I found out from my Dad that the KKK was involved in the next town over until fairly recently. I likewise informed him that the KKK’s peak was in the 20’s when it wasn’t merely anti-black but also anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic, immigrant, etc. I personally don’t believe Northam is a bigot but he sure as hell was and might still be oblivious to racial privilege.

Well. We actually don’t re-elect our governors here in consecutive terms. What I do not know is if Lt. Governor Fairfax would be eligible to run for a term of his own though if he assumed the governorship.

re: #132 Renaissance_Man

With you until the last 3 sentences. It’s possible to be morally redeemed, and still be too radioactive to go on. Unless he has receipts on a denial story, he needs to take one for the cause.

142
HappyWarrior  Feb 2, 2019 • 8:04:41am

The thing is and this is really unfortunate is that we haven’t truly been able to have a real conversation in this state about truly why the KKK and blackface are rightfully considered so awful. I think for far too many other white people, the KKK are cartoon characters almost. And yeah part of that does come through clever comedy like Blazing Saddles or dark comedies like Django Unchained. And I’m not saying the KKK shouldn’t be reduced to mockery, they by all means should but the KKK was more than part of Hedley not Hedy Lamarr’s posse. It was an instrument of terror. It killed men, women, and children. It destroyed families. It burned homes. It created an atmosphere of fear. Blackface like wise. We may look at now and be astonished that this was what many of our ancestors found funny but we don’t see how it was used to justify dehumanizing PoC for years. And I think sadly that’s what the 25 year old Northam may not have gotten when he posed for that photo. No, I don’t think the man is a racist like Corey Stewart in that Governor Northam believes the CSA was a morally virtuous cause or a racist like his opponent Ed Gillespie who used fear of immigrants in his ads but like many white men and women, I do think he’s someone who may be guilty of something a bit more common and that’s not understanding.

Gear geek stuff behind the button…

On my trip to LA, I sampled a lot of new gear and took the plunge on a new amplifier (among other things) - a 35 watt amp by a Northern California company called Two Rock. Apparently John Mayer put them on the map a few years ago by using them on a couple of tours. The amp arrived last Thursday, and I got to use it at a gig for the first time last night.

Two Rock is a ‘boutique’ manufacturer that makes amps the old fashioned way - point-to-point hand wiring, using quality components. It was by no means inexpensive, but the difference between this amp and all my other amps (both tube and sold state, of varying vintage) is night and day. It took about a half hour on stage to get it really dialed in, but once it was in the ‘sweet spot’ it sounded amazing. If my amps were cars, most of them would be daily drivers while this one would be a Maserati. Extremely responsive to finger attack and reproduced every detail.

I’m usually not an amp snob, but I think this one is actually going to make me a better player - or at least it will help to put across what I’m trying to do a lot better than what I’ve been playing through.

IMO, if someone acted in a truly deplorable way 35 years ago but (assuming they committed no crime) has behaved in an exemplary fashion in the intervening years AND sincerely apologizes for their earlier behavior AND nothing in their current behavior suggests that they retain their earlier views, they should be given a second chance.

Read once that Indiana’s white Protestant male population was up to 40% members of the KKK in the 20’s if not even higher in some places. I think that’s the thing about the KKK. mmmirele  Feb 2, 2019 • 8:55:15am

I’m really, really tired of pro-lifers. They annoy the living daylights out of me. It’s not merely their fetus worship to the detriment of women, but at the other end of life. My dad died in 2014, and he basically died when his body shut down because he couldn’t swallow anymore. (Alzheimer’s is horrible.) So he went to hospice for palliative care. That was one of the worst weeks of my life, watching my dad basically die of thirst.

So I’m getting one of these pro-lifers chewing me out because of this, because my father, while he was still lucid, signed all sorts of documents stating he wanted no heroic actions taken. And we followed his instructions and took no heroic actions. We didn’t give him water because he could not swallow. And yet this woman is telling me we should have continued giving him water. I finally lost my temper.

What angers me about this is that we don’t have a good way to deal with end of life issues, so we have these things where we put a man in a clean, well-lit room and basically leave him to die of thirst instead of doing something else because we’re afraid of the horrible word “euthanasia.” You don’t know how much I’ve thought about this over the last five years, especially after a Canadian friend of mine with terminal lung cancer applied to and went to Dignitas in Geneva. She would have preferred to have stayed in Canada and died there, but this was under Harper and she was terrified she’d be kept alive against her will. So off she went to Switzerland and she had her dignified death, completely lucid and knowing exactly what she was doing.

I worry about people like this young woman, who seem to get their jollies over the possibility that we can force women to carry pregnancies we don’t want and keep people alive even after they can no longer swallow and are comatose.

HappyWarrior  Feb 2, 2019 • 8:59:12am

Anyhow quick history of the KKK. First KKK was the one formed not long after the war ended. It was mostly if not exclusively Southern and full of CSA vets and sympathizers. Grant declared it a terrorist organization. It sort of died out in the 1870’s though obviously white supremacy did not. Then in 1915, you have Birth of a Nation which inspires the second and probably the Klan that most us think of. This Klan was nationwide. It pretty much accepted anyone who was an American born Protestant as a member and hated blacks, Jews, Catholics, among others. This Klan fell apart due to internal corruption and was pretty much done by the Depression. Then the third and final version of the Klan that started after WWII as a response to the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement. Unlike the first two, this wasn’t one united organization. This is why you see many KKK like organizations with different names. Arguably, it’s akin to how the IRA has many splinter groups with different names. This one retained the old hates but of course added new hates: feminists, LGBT people, Muslims, Hispanics, etc to its list. I have heard the modern Klan isn’t as brazenly anti-Catholic which is probably why Steve Scalise felt he could say he could be Duke without the baggage. They’re done by any means and when we have people like Richard Spencer whose protege is a key WH adviser as well as Trump himself, that’s why we need to stay on racism and not just shrug.

I was born in ‘66, and as I mentioned earlier, I entered school in 1972, the first year the elementary school I first attended was integrated. In the first years, I think our elementary schools tried to consciously deprogram us of the inherent racism of the system that surrounded us, but that message was not sufficiently reinforced at home.

By my teen years, I was seeing more overt displays of racist rhetoric and racist assumptions from my peers, suburban white kids who had never known legally enforced segregation. Some probably thought they were “being edgy” or otherwise transgressive. The majority probably just soaked up their older relatives’ racism like a sponge.

As I mentioned before, I grew up with my racist paternal grandparents practically whining everyday over the loss of Jim Crow. My mother’s family was much more liberal on race - I never heard an overtly racist statement out of them. Yet, my maternal grandfather - the one who was shot down over Germany and spent time in a POW camp - was a bus driver for a time during fifties and early sixties before he took over his family’s dairy operation and would’ve had to have enforced segregation on his bus routes.

Growing up, and as an adult, my liberalism on race and other issues has put me at odds with the surviving members of my father’s family, and quite a few of my classmates have grown up to become Trumpers, much to my annoyance.

I don’t like writing apologia for racist behavior, and I hope I’m not doing so, but I’m also a believer in context and getting as much of an understanding of a situation and its participants as possible before demanding action.

Yeah, western Maryland is really something.

It’s the opposite of Pennsylvania. PA has Pittsburgh and Philly and then Alabama in the middle. Maryland has Alabama and Misssippi on the sides but with liberalism in the middle. Granted the Baltimore burbs are a bit more moderate than the DC ones but they’re not really as wingnutty as the Western part of the state or the Eastern shore which is where CCJ’s pal Andy Harris is from and the home district of my cousin.

re: #192 A Three Hour Tour

I do think we should find out what was going on. FWIW I don’t think Northam is a racist. Voted for him, campaigned for him, and nothing about him in his public life has shown me that I think he is but I think it really showed poor judgment by someone 25 years old and about to enter the Army. He probably didn’t know over 30 years he would be our governor but still.

Assumes apology is sincere and who judges worthiness of recent behavior? Republicans can drive a truck through that. They can even throw in a “Jesus forgives me”.

Radicals like @AOC are holding the Democratic Party and our nation hostage. @MaxRose4NY, @DelgadoforNY19, and @ABrindisiNY should fight for a deal that increases border security. It’s what the people want!

like aoc said, “border security” <> ‘wall’. DO NOT LET THEM MORPH THIS!

It’s hard for them to admit, but a wall is not what Americans want & never has been.

In recent Pew polling, almost 60% of Americans oppose a wall.

A *record-high* 75% of Americans say immigration is good for the US.

The only radical hostage-taker here is the Republican Party.

As I’ve mentioned, Dad is in the late stages of life, so really for the first time, I’ve had to deal with the simple fact that ‘natural causes’ doesn’t mean you live till you suddenly stop.

Dad has started not remembering how to drink from a straw sometimes. His urine output has decreased. He’s barely eating, and his digestive system is working really slowly when it works at all. He’s getting weaker, and has fewer and fewer moments of clarity. So much of who he was is already gone due to dementia.

We don’t go out like a light switched off. It’s a slow, not particularly dignified process that our ancestors watched their parents go through and ultimately went through as well. People who see an ovum going from haploid to diploid as THE MOMENT at which it becomes fully a human being also have difficulty with the idea that it’s also a process, not an event, at the other end.

We humans love our categories, our binary divisions of things and events and time, but nature doesn’t work like that. Nature is about processes, and spectra, and becoming.

Digital artist Ard Gelinck knows this better than most. Through his carefully-constructed Photoshops, Gelinck recuts images of famous musicians, actors and beyond, positioning the present-day stars alongside their former faces, as if they were hanging out together to this day.

Eehhhh. That only, and I really mean only, works if that software doesn’t handle data strictly as data (to simplify the matter somewhat - but not much). I mean, SQL injection via DNA (which is the least unlikely way for this to happen by some margin) sounds cool but if the guys handling that sort of sensitive information are *so* sloppy in their coding practices you have a bigger problem.
This is not, nor will it ever be, a realistic attack vector.

Why? I mean they’ve proven that a lot of gene sequence code isn’t protecting against malware because, well, it wasn’t expecting it. It’s also a proof of concept. Hacking in this case isn’t going to be your typical type of attack. To tell you the truth, this really just proves that DNA encoding really is like any other software.

But in the nuance-free world of 2019 where you’re either a saint or a racist in a Klan hood, can he pull that off? I’m not betting on it.

What if everything Northam just said is true? If he was in the Army after graduation, never bought that yearbook and really had never seen that page until the Roy Moore ratfuckers dropped it yesterday?

If there were only 40 copies of that yearbook out there, why WOULD he have seen it?

So, again… IF what he said today is true, what should he have done differently today?

I’m really, really tired of pro-lifers. They annoy the living daylights out of me. It’s not merely their fetus worship to the detriment of women, but at the other end of life. My dad died in 2014, and he basically died when his body shut down because he couldn’t swallow anymore. (Alzheimer’s is horrible.) So he went to hospice for palliative care. That was one of the worst weeks of my life, watching my dad basically die of thirst ….

My husband also had a similar end in 2016, although from a different disease. The only alternative was to surgically implant a feeding tube and pour food and water in. It was horrible, horrible, but that alternative would have just made it horrible for much longer.

Tears and anger with you.
