In response to Ipsos’ post downstairs.

He said it was him in the photo yesterday, then today he said it isn’t. Sorry, but there’s no way in the world you wouldn’t know.

Well, actually….

Now he says it’s not him in blackface in the picture, but he thought it might be, because of that OTHER time he was in blackface.

THAT’S NOT ANY BETTER!!!!!!!!

Time for the hook.

What if Obama Northam was really born in Kenya never went to that party and dressed like that but somebody placed a fake birth announcement in the Honolulu paper picture in his yearbook knowing that he would be running for president governor someday?

Sure, and the bottomless bad faith as shown from Erick ibn Erick O’Erick. And the mess from Elizabeth Warren’s attempt to resolve issues with her ancestry. You will never win with Republicans by trying to play on their terms, because they are liars and cheats and everything is done in bad faith. I mean, at the very least, this isn’t about trying to impress the GOP or the media, since that’s never going to happen. This is, as you put it, about ‘keeping our house in order’ and taking care of something that actually erodes trust in a leadership figure.

It absolutely is a trust thing. This state has gotten better as I’ve gotten older but we have to remember we had a governor turned Senator in Allen who kept a CSA flag in his office. Our state has had Corey Stewart as a nominee for statewide office as recently as last fall. I don’t care what the Republicans say about us. I want us to be a positive example on this sort of thing and having a Governor who posed in KKK garb or blackface isn’t that.

No that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying that’s definitely something Virginia voters are thinking about. There are other things too. Northam didn’t include Fairfax on a flier either. The story given was that they didn’t want to offend the Union voters who supported the pipeline that Northam supported but not Fairfax. And then there’s how he handled it when Fairfax protested the Lee hagiography display just last month. This state has done a lot of good in those two years. We sent a diverse bunch of people first to Richmond in 2017 and then to Washington just this past November but this shows we’re still dealing with the ghosts of the Civil War and its aftermath.

It wasn’t done to prove that ZOMG DEMOCRATS ARE THE REAL RACISTS, ti was done to discredit a man who wasn’t wavering on supporting the most progressive bit of pro-choice legislation that could have passed to the governor’s desk in years. I don’t care what the Republicans or right wing assholes with agendas like Erickson say, I care that my state, my state that not even two summers ago had a young woman not much older than me murdered by a racist because she was protesting the CSA flag. I care that my state still has plenty of people who want to venerate Robert E. Lee the same way we ought to be venerating true Virginia heroes like Thomas, Scott, Marshall, and others including Civil Rights heroes.

Wasn’t he thought to be behind the groping story of Al Franken? I’m remembering it that way.

But my point is, this all makes me think about what all Mueller is going to see when they go through all that data of Stone’s.

I’m thinking Stone has all kinds of info about his schemes on all his devices and computers. It will be interesting to see what comes of all that and what that opens up on down the road.

Imagine coming across direct info that ties Stone pulling the strings with the media to release the image and coaching the radio personality on how to tell her story.

TBH there were some things about Northam that did some rub some in the activist wing the wrong way. As I mentioned, he was courted to switch parties at one point. He also admitted that he voted for Bush in 2004. Perriello’s campaign which as you all know I worked on mostly hit him on the Dominion issue. Ralph ultimately prevailed IMO because of his higher profile as Lt. Governor versus being a former one term Congressman and Planned Parenthood and this is no knock on them understandably backed him since he had the better record on choice.

Corey Stewart, a man who I think literally cries because of what happened at Appamatox Court House. A man whose immigration policy the Klan would actually support.

And they are constantly when their shitheads are accused “Well what would happen if a Democrat did.” Well you are seeing exactly that and they’re still doing this shit. The party whose chairman actually apologized for offending Rush Limbaugh after criticizing the Southern Strategy has no room to stand on this. The party of Donald Trump and Birtherism. The Party who has in its House Leadership, a man who pledged to be David Duke without the baggage and has never expressed any regret for that should stfu and let the Dems do our own house cleaning but they won’t because that’s what right wingers are, hypocritical assholes.

I think so much is coming to the surface these days that Americans are going to stop caring. Maybe they already have.

We shouldn’t confuse twitter feeds with the actual electorate.

I fear that Americans are being turned off from actual civil engagement - twitter is not civil engagement - by which I mean actually being involved in local governance.

This last election did show a swell of anti-Trump voters turn out… and that made a difference. But a bigger difference was needed - see the Senate balance of power.

One of the things that the Mrs. Fish introduced me to is something I’ve heard referred to as a “toad in the hole” - a piece of bread, with the center cut out, slathered in butter, then fried in a pan with an egg dropped into the hole. My kids call it “eggs in the middle of bread”, and apparently, I make it like a boss. Mrs. Fish even told me she had a craving for it this afternoon, so for lunch, before doing my oil changes, I busted out my favorite nonstick pan and the butter knife.

1.5 lbs of hangar steak trimmings under 4 hrs sous vide marinated in shisito peppers and mushrooms

Browned together with bacon fat, pan deglazed with a meritage, all under a low and slow simmer. Will drop in onion, carrot, mushrooms, maybe elephant garlic if they have it.

Served with a hot pugliese for dipping and swabbing.

Two new developments in dog:

1) Our rescue dog is a major puller on walks. We were encouraged by the trainer we signed on with to get a two-point harness. I bought it a week ago. At first she ran under the dining-room table to get away from it. Then she would flatten herself on the floor so that it couldn’t be put around her. On the advice of our trainer, we held the harness in one hand and offered peanut butter in the other. Some peanut butter got on the harness. Over the course of the week she would seek the harness to lick. So, today she finally sat still for the harness. Yay! It was amazing to walk her without the pulling.

2) About a month ago, due to my wife’s complaints about her smell, I gave the dog a bath. I bathed her in our only tub on the second floor of our townhouse. It was a huge pain the ass, but once she was under the warm water she was ok. She avoids that room, but has no problem following me upstairs, and when I close the door to our bedroom, she sleeps at the top of the stairs waiting for me to come out. But once we started talking “bath” she has been reticent. I tried to lure her upstairs with a favorite treat. She took it from my hand and ran downstairs immediately. I came downstairs offering another treat and she flattened herself on the floor, refusing to take the bribe. She clearly read something to know that we were bribing her to do something she ordinarily wouldn’t want to do.

Dogs can be stupid, but they can also be pretty damn smart.

Lesson: I would guess dogs in general, but our dog remembers traumatic experiences and it will take a lot to change negative associations with positive associations.

Just sticking a pin in here to remind everyone that the reason Northam is suddenly in the news right now is precisely because he’s being ratfucked by Roy Moore-affiliated ratfuckers who dropped it into the public eye this weekend to try to keep his abortion legislation from passing.

It may well be that it’s so damaging that he can’t stay in office. I’ll leave that to people who are actually in Virginia (and especially to people who are actually in Virginia and who aren’t white and privileged) to decide whether he’s political toast.

But I think when passions cool a little, we’re going to look back on this and wonder why we allowed his career to be ended so abruptly by people who have seriously shitty ulterior motives.

Maybe we’ll even wonder why we as Democrats let ourselves get manipulated like this over and over again (cf. Franken, Al), while the other side lets its racists just keep chugging along (cf. King, Steve). I suppose the Florida SoS is the one big exception so far - but his blackface incident was pretty recent, no?

No. Over a decade ago.

And, sorry….but the Klan is kinda existential to the black community, and blackface is not much better. The wonder is why white Democrats are taking these things so lightly.

Thing is, even in 1984, cosplaying in blackface or Klan garb was not only racist af, but it was very visible backlash against black folks and the civil rights fights of the 50s-70s IMO, something that was still in very recent memory. If Northam was indeed involved in that shit, then he should resign as governor and slink off out of politics, because it was just as wrong when he did it as it is now.

The media desperately wanted to make Tom versus Ralph as Bernie wing versus establishment wing. It wasn’t. Tom in fact was endorsed by John Podesta , Neera Tanden, and Valerie Jarrett. He did have mostly support by the state establishment Dems which well made sense, Northam was Lt. Governor and a former member of the State Senate and thus probably had more relationships with the people there.

documentcloud.org

You could just leaf through it, dip in it every now and then and get an idea of how awful the impact has been on Massachusetts. Purdue Pharma’s goal was not merely to sell their opioids, but to encourage doctors to increase doses. Even when it looked like the patient was addicted, Purdue called it “pseudoaddiction” and advised doctors to increase the dose.

I am not familiar with Massachusetts’ case law regarding deceptive trade practices and public nuisance (!), but the lawsuit is itself an eye-opener.

Not only should Northam resign, I believe (unlike most here) that Al Franken did the right thing by resigning as well. The fact that opposition research found things out and produced them in order to harm the pols doesn’t change my mind. Northam was a racist blackface wearer (at best!), and Al, sad as I am to say it, was a groper and needed to leave.

I am sad to say that about Al. I loved the guy since I read Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, and I was always impressed by his heart and intelligence and thought he was very good at his job. But there were far too many stories about him, some of them told contemporaneously, for me to believe it was all made up by Roger Stone. The fact that Al chose to resign tells me that he knew flat denial of everything would not fly - because at least some of it was true. Bill Clinton got away with groping - a lot of politicians used to. But they shouldn’t have, and now not as many will.

It is true that Democrats resign when Republicans don’t. In some ways this is a weakness, but I think in the long run it is more of a strength. Democrats have to actually care about their most important constituencies (women and people of color) or what are we for? We already have a party to throw crumbs at their base in order to protect the money and power of their actual constituency.

Furthermore, we know, and politicians certainly know, that opposition research is a thing. If they have crappy stuff in their past, they might be able to work though it and get forgiveness - but not by waiting until they are caught red-handed. Forgiveness comes from understanding the harm you did, and changing, and making up for it where you can. (They might also not be forgiven even if they do all that. That is a risk you take when you do crappy things).

I feel a little betrayed because I genuinely felt he was a better man than Ed Gillespie is. Now, I’m not so sure. Not just because of the incident in question but because of his actions today. Doesn’t mean Gillespie is good news obviously either and it is wrong to suggest that this in any way vindicates Gillespie.

re: #263 Hecuba’s daughter

The party that is infested with politicians who practice their racism today, that supports Robert E. Lee, the Confederate flag, Confederate monuments, and minority voter purges today, and not 35 years ago, is the one that should be under constant attack and that should have its members forced to leave office.

I was really disappointed at the time Northam didn’t give a condemnation of Lee and his legacy. It unfortunately wasn’t the first time he had let Fairfax out in the cold like that. Something happened during the campaign too and it was dismissed as just politics since the group that Northam was trying to get to vote for him was a little hostile to Fairfax because he opposed the pipeline that the Union and Northam supported.

I can’t express the murderous rage I feel right now.

Yes, I quit smoking again.

I’m fucking dangerous right now. My husband’s fearing for his survival.

Fuck. My. Life.

That is all.

Good luck to you. Patches helped me cut down, buproprion (Wellbutrin) finally helped me quit. Check with your doctor.

Speaking of Massachusetts and opioids, here’s the unredacted 277 page lawsuit by the state of Massachusetts against Purdue Pharma, the Sackler family, and various other stooges of the Sacklers. Richard Sackler comes off as a particular asshat for wanting to do all sorts of things to increase the sales of OxyContin.

documentcloud.org

You could just leaf through it, dip in it every now and then and get an idea of how awful the impact has been on Massachusetts. Purdue Pharma’s goal was not merely to sell their opioids, but to encourage doctors to increase doses. Even when it looked like the patient was addicted, Purdue called it “pseudoaddiction” and advised doctors to increase the dose.

I am not familiar with Massachusetts’ case law regarding deceptive trade practices and public nuisance (!), but the lawsuit is itself an eye-opener.

A few years ago, I ranted here on how I blamed the pharmaceutical industry for the opioid epidemic. Certainly seems that the states may finally be pursuing the true villains underlying this scourge. Unfortunately it looks like the punishment will be financial in nature; the only way to stop criminal behavior by executives is to imprison them.

And I continue to think that nothing Frankin did rose to the level that should have required his resignation, and we shouldn’t demand that public figures have met today’s standards before they were standards… but we’ve been over this before and nothing will be gained by going over it again.

As to Nordham, I could actually forgive him the blackface (believe it or not, I had no idea until a couple of years ago that blackface was anything but a relic of vaudeville, now long dead, and thus wouldn’t have “got” the issue), but not the klan costume. No-one can claim ignorance about that.

Perriello really is one of the most genuinely decent people you’ll meet in politics. I hated that his campaign was reduced to just being the representative of the Bernie wing because he is so much more than just a guy who was backed by Bernie over Northam. He’s a guy who voted for ACA even though it hurt his chances at re-election, stood by it, and after he was unfortunately beaten served his country in the Obama State Department in Africa. He’s a kind and intelligent man that I gladly voted for because he truly was the embodiment of the Virginia I was raised in. I seriously hope he seeks office again.

A better example of lawful evil has rarely been seen.

Another is kids rationing their insulin because the price has been jacked up so high just because they can.

We need to adopt the practices of other first world nations by controlling the price of medication.

There was a beautiful story that Tom’s mother related to us when I met her with other volunteers. Tom was a hyperactive kid. He probably would be diagnosed with ADD today. His Mom related that Tom even though he was only 10-11 years old understood that he was just seen as a hyperactive kid whereas a kid of color wouldn’t get that same benefit of the doubt and understanding. And the guy doesn’t give cookie cutter answers. He’ll answer your questions sincerely and give an answer. He’s obviously not a saint but there was a reason why a former one term Congressman did get a lot of excitement and got not only my vote but my time.

For me, as a Virginia voter, the Northam fiasco has brought up a number of issues that I am currently wrestling with.

1. When is political redemption possible?
2. When is nullifying someone’s vote wrong?
3. What are the implications and consequences of nullifying someone’s vote?
4. Is ‘purity’ involved in this? And if so, at what point is seeking purity wrong?
5. Who gets to decide on who holds an office beyond his voters?
6. When is it better to lose an election rather than compromise on one’s values?
7. There are multiple threads of loyalty involved. Which loyalties are more important than others? How do you decide?
