Speaking of blackface, a take I have which may not be popular is that its problematic that Warren listed herself as “American Indian” on her Bar registration card in 1986, in that I suspect Native Americans will find her attempt to claim that identity for herself to be offensive.

Yeah that’s going to be a problem imo. Believing the family stories that turned out being true is one thing. But this is different. It won’t justify the right’s reaction to it but it’s worthy of criticism imo.

Regarding the Northam mess, it seems that the media is mostly focusing on the blackface. I thought the guy in the Klan costume was the worst aspect of that photo. Am I missing something here?

I think they’re focused on the blackface because that is apparently Northam in the blackface. If it was him in the Klan sheets, they’d probably be more focused on that.

I mean, if you’re willing to walk around in blackface for a Halloween party, it’s not like it’s much of a stretch that you’ll be cool with a dude wearing a Klan robe.

I wonder how much of that is the difference between being a first term president vs a second term president.

Nixon was never running for office again after 1972. But Congressional GOPers are faced with a situation where they know they’re going to have to face re-election at the same time as Trump in 2020.

I never thought about it like that. Plus Agnew was already gone too. So yeah you could be on to something but that there was no equiv of FNC in those days I think has helped Trump. Nixon with a FNC type machine behind him and who knows what happens.

All I remember is that there were many more women and people of color in the STEM classes than I subsequently saw at places like Ford and GM during my career.

Since I confessed one sin from when I was 5, here I will confess that in 2000 I encouraged my wife to list her race as Native American in the census because her family tree showed that she is a descendant of John Rolfe and Pocahontas. I now realize that was insensitive, but fortunately Mrs. Aagcobb is unlikely to run for a high office.

Robert Downey Jr in Tropic Thunder was actually making fun of blackface. He was playing a white (non-American, I believe Australian) actor who used blackface for the role. There was an entire subplot to the movie about the actual black actor character being pissed off about it and Downey’s character not getting it.

And I’d point out that Wilder and Aykroyd are shown in scenes with two of the greatest comedians (that happen to be black)… I’m guessing if Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor weren’t in on whatever the joke was, it probably wasn’t going to happen.

(I don’t have a defense for the rest)

I mean I don’t think it should ruin Warren but I hope she sees why it was insensitive just like you do now. But in many cases, they’ve been saying or doing these things for a LONG time, in public, and suddenly they’re facing consequences. I have to wonder if on some level, we’re seeing some sort of mass sublimation effect — focusing on these racist politicians to avoid facing the biggest, most dangerous racism problem in the US, staring us right in the face: Donald Trump.

Could be that we’re working towards Trump as well. Going after the low hanging fruit, establishing a template for how to do this, then going for the big enchilada, as it were. Trump isn’t going to be shamed into resignation, generations of breeding have left him without that gene sequence. So we’re going to need the institutions to do the heavy lifting if it happens before November 2020, and that means laying ground work in other cases first.

Or maybe I’m just being overly optimistic.

As something of a genealogist, my observation is the longer your family has been in this country, the more likely you’re going to find out you’re not who you think you are. I don’t have any Native American ancestors that I know of since I can trace my mom’s side back to Europe as recently as last century and my Dad’s into the 19th but there are other families that have been here for years that just can’t. And if I found out I was part Native-American or African-American or whatever, I wouldn’t consider myself that group but I definitely would try to understand the life my ancestor must have had. I do however have fairly close cousins who are biracial and their parents (my mom’s cousins) did sadly face scorn from the majority community over it.

Nuance is dead. Context is tedious. This is some rather refined and well-timed political ratfucking and I have to very grudgingly give the GOP some credit for pulling it off as they did (not that it is the least admirable except from the point of view of political manipulation of public opinion)

We start throwing about absolutes like blackface = racist and it blows up in people’s faces (bringing to mind the aftermath of a typical explosion in a Looney Tunes cartoon)

Yeah it is pretty shocking but look at it this way, Pocahontas and John Rolfe are probably her 10th grandparents right? There’s 1022 others that helped shape her genetics to looking that way today heh. I was talking to my brother about the concept of dopplegangers and how they probably have some of the same genes as one’s self but it just came at a different way. About that Elizabeth Warren Texas Bar registration card — this is an important note, buried at the bottom of the Washington Post article:

There’s no indication Warren had anything to gain by reporting herself as Native American on the Texas bar card. Above the lines for race, national origin and handicap status, the card says, “The following information is for statistical purposes only and will not be disclosed to any person or organization without the express written consent of the attorney.”

So she had absolutely nothing to gain by doing this. It actually backs up her claim that her family believed they had Native American ancestry, because why put that down if she didn’t believe it, when it wasn’t benefiting her in some way?

Did she not take a DNA test that validated her claim?

So she had absolutely nothing to gain by doing this. It actually backs up her claim that her family believed they had Native American ancestry, because why put that down if she didn’t believe it, when it wasn’t benefiting her in some way?

Good point. The only legitimate criticism is that she was expropriating an identity while fully living a life as a white without in any way participating in the culture of a tribe.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on Wednesday called on survivors of the Parkland shooting to be removed from a House Judiciary Committee hearing after they interrupted the congressman’s rant on illegal immigration.

At a House Judiciary hearing on gun violence, Gaetz attempted to change the subject to murders allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.

After Gaetz called on Congress to build President Donald Trump’s proposed wall, a survivor of the Parkland shooting reportedly interrupted. Gaetz reacted by trying to have the survivors removed.

re: #59 HappyWarrior

My aunt researched our history and found all kinds of miscreants. One great-great grandfather was an abortionist who carried a fake “Harvard Medical School” gold-tipped walking stick. My dad still has it.

And by the way, the Washington Post is usually one of the better mainstream sources these days, but it seems kind of sleazy to bury this important information at the bottom of the article after discussing every other angle of this controversy. It should have been noted RIGHT AFTER the section about the registration card.

Burying it at the bottom increases the click bait potential of the article, though.

No…

Did she seek tribal political/leadership positions?

No?

at what point did she gain any benefit for believing her own family history that was presented to her as she was growing up? Did she understand that she had some Native American ancestry, yes. Did she present her self in any fashion as representative of all tribes or a specific tribe… No.

There’s been a sliver of Republicans, going back to (at least) Reagan in his second term that have been arguing for some sort of guest worker/temporary work visa program. But like everything else when it comes to immigration reform, it never gets off the ground. The obvious point, to me at least, is if we have more people willing to and actually coming to this country than what the law allows, the best solution is to allow more people to immigrate. But of course, that is just going to scare the old (white, but I repeat myself) racists even more.

On that note, there were some really fucking egregious examples of blackface in old cartoons (I can’t think of any Looney Tunes ones right off, but Tom and Jerry had quite a bit, as well as a stereotypical, grossly caricatured black woman as Tom’s owner for more than a few shorts); that’s a big reason why you don’t see a lot of either cartoon (and others too) from the 30s-50s out for public consumption these days, if you do at all.

Basically I see it this way. You know how some rappers or entertainers have very specific things that identify them? I.E. hair color/style, a clothing accessory, etc. If you go to a party like that, that’s fine and if you changed your skin tone to look more like them, again in bad taste by our standards but I can understand why then. But if you just went as a generic idea of a rapper and started talking in stereotypical Ebonics or African-American dialect than frankly you were engaging in modern day like minstrel behavior.

Standards change, or, in this case, people become aware that what they used to do won’t fly now. It wouldn’t be so bad if all of the adults could act like adults, but we have an entire party that on the one hand doesn’t mind being racist, but is sure willing to use it against the other side when it’s to their advantage. What pisses me off is we’ve had bigots for years. And the right’s fake crocodile tears at this while they ignored and in fact embraced people like Bob Marshall who is now gone thankfully and Dick Black who is on his way out being outright bigots while they were in office. And of course Corey Stewart too and yep Ed Gillespie knowing full well that the downstate voters equate every Hispanic with MS-13 and ruining that damn ad.

I dunno. I think his response hurt the party. I think if he stayed it out, it might be harder to pass legislation but what sucks is this is really going to impact us legislatively this fall. That’s very true. TBH, I think one thing about the Washington Redskins that a lot of people don’t know is the history of that franchise. Their founding owner was perhaps the worst racist in American sports history. The Redskins integrated after Jackie Robinson had retired in the JFK years.

It’s not just Washington. Schools and colleges have used various Indian related names forever. The Stanford team used to be the Indians, but switched to Cardinals (weirdly out of place in the West) a number of years ago.

I mean yeah I’m disgusted that Northam and to a lesser extent Herring thought this was okay when they were young men. Fairfax, I’m waiting and seeing. I’m not saying he’s telling the truth or his accuser is. However, the Virginia Republican party disgusts me. They nominated Corey Stewart for Senator last year. We all know Corey here so I won’t rehash how much he loves the CSA. They nominated Gillespie for Governor who played he George Wallace game of racial opportunism in how he used MS-13 to scare down state voters. And then you have Ken Cuccinelli who is a homophobic racist zealot run for Governor teamed with E.W. Jackson who is African-American but notoriously homophobic and bigoted towards Muslims. And before that they gave George Allen a second chance at the Senate after he had the infamous macaca incident. Oh and then there’s Bob Marshall who refused to treat his transgender opponent who thankfully beat his ass with any respect. And my own State Senator Dick Black who denied that spousal rape could happen. Does the Va Democratic Party have some people who could benefit from some racial sensitivity? Absolutely. But he Virginia Republican Party is full of assholes who look down on Northern Virginia’s racial diversity and think it’s ruining our state.

i have a hard time buying into the appropriation theme… she has indicated that in the verbal family history that was presented to her as a child and no one gainsaying that in Oklahoma where she was raised has little to do with tribal appropriation. Did she lobby for official tribal recognition?

This is all bullshit GOP narrative that we’re answering to, drop the framing on their terms and this is essentially bupkis.

As LGFs I believe only Mississippian, these numbers seem accurate to me. If you look at the regional breakdown, the only places that the Democrat is favored over the Republican are the Jackson Metro area and the The Delta (effectively greater Memphis), two of the most liberal leaning areas of the state. Everywhere else, Reeves leads by a decent margin.

Also, guess which candidate blacks overwhelmingly support?

I agree with the assessment that after the GOP primary is done conservatives will rally behind whoever is picked and more than likely that person will be the eventual winner.

The Rev. Wright thing was also a total nothingburger. In a democracy having a rational electorate, no response by Obama would have been needed.

But a black guy expressing pointed criticism of America in biblical terms was enough to send some ungodly fraction of White America to its fainting couch, and Obama had to deal with that.

Saw this while scrolling through way too much twitter content. There’s a whole thread but the first tweet seems like it’s the way a lot of people in these situations should be addressing it (if it’s true and/or what they believe):

So, on this blackface stuff…maybe one of these politicians and their teams will be candid about the fact that they were raised and socialized during times and places where racism was normal and the impact of that is still pervasive in our lives to this day. Maybe.

i was raised on Long Island, new york

since a child forced to go to religious school i’ve thought, probably like everyone else, how clear it is that a different family, i’d be a different religion, etc

as a now atheist, i cant quite buy the cosmic notion that god put me where he put me and in any other circumstance some how i’d have found the same one true way anyway

one of my biggest ‘fears’ is if i were raised in ‘the south’ (or where ever) how obviously i’d have been that

was / would there have been a strong inherent ‘good’ in me that would have overrode all that socialization and told me treating other people that way was wrong?
that they are in fact people?
I like to think i would have got an education, learned and maybe ‘broken through’.

my fear is that i would not have

I worried a bit that an African-American couldn’t win the presidency because racism, and I was gratified to be wrong. Then Trump happened.

I think sad to say a lot of the Obama-Trump voters were fine when Obama wasn’t a black guy but they hated it when he reminded them that yes I’m African American and I know what racial discrimination is. Trump fed on that and yeah anti HRC shit. My brothers are both convinced HRC robbed Bernie and that HRC is a crook.

It’s kind of unimaginable for a Republican to win the presidency right after 8 solid years of GW Bush and co. fucking up everything in sight like a severely obsessive animal-fucker in a stockyard.

You’re in luck. There are actual atheists in the South, such as me, who went to church as a kid, grew up with racist parents, and still managed to only be screwed up a little. But, I will say this, some of it has been a learning process, and I’m still learning. That’s why I do tend to be more concerned with how these people act now than how they acted back then, especially with blackface. It was insensitive, but it wasn’t thrown-on-the-floor-and-pinned-down bad.

She has repeatedly stated that the wealthiest and many business types could be expected to see their taxes raised if she was elected. I really don’t think taxes are the boogeyman that everyone says that they are as an issue. people are starting to realize that those taxes actually pay for programs like Medicare, immigration reform, clean water, clean air, safe food, school funding, federal loan programs etc…

we have to stop letting these guys set the framing and having that dictate the strategy of running for office, people are wanting serious people to address serious problems and stop dealing and reacting to this culture war shit that the GOP consistently peddles and the MSM panders to. I know that Corgan has turned into kind of a whack job, but I’m a sucker for stories of musicians being reunited with stolen instruments - After 27 Years, Billy Corgan Finally Reunites With Stolen ‘Gish’ Guitar

About a year after Smashing Pumpkins issued their fuzzy, trippy debut, Gish, a thief stole Billy Corgan’s favorite guitar. The band had just finished a gig at Detroit’s Saint Andrew’s Hall in June 1992 when a friend who was acting as a roadie told him, “Somebody just walked out the back door with your guitar.” It hadn’t even been five minutes since the band finished the show, as Corgan recalls. “I was like, ‘How is that even possible? Where’s security? Where were you?’” He filed a police report and offered a $10,000, no-questions-asked reward for its return.

For the past 27 years, he’s heard rumors of the guitar resurfacing. “It got to the point where you started not believing it, because you heard it so many times,” he tells Rolling Stone. “It was like the lost treasure of Blackbeard or something.”

On Tuesday, Corgan’s fortunes changed. A friend of his contacted him with a picture of a guitar that looked like the stolen instrument. But he was still incredulous because he’d been tricked before. “Somebody sent me a picture a couple of weeks ago of another one of my guitars, and I wrote the guy back and said, ‘How did you get my guitar?’” he says. “And he wrote back, ‘Oh, it’s a recreation.’ He’d literally gotten the same stickers, worn them down in the same way and scraped the paint so it looked worn. You could have fooled me.” So he decided to check it out in person. Sure enough, it was the early Seventies Fender Stratocaster that he had been looking for for more than 25 years.

Fucking details, Donnie:

But as CNN notes, Trump’s high approval ratings for his 2019 speech are due at least in part to the partisan nature of the audience. In fact, the speech had the “largest partisan tilt measured in any CNN instant poll following a presidential address to Congress back to 2001,” journalist Jennifer Agiesta wrote. People who watched this year’s State of the Union were 17 points likelier than the general public to identify as Republicans, and Republicans, of course, liked what Trump had to say.

You cannot condemn liberals for being proponents of diversity and then liken them to the KKK.

why not?

it’s the spaghetti approach
the first part sticks to some people, the second to others

it doesnt have to have internal consistency or make any overall cohesive sense

pointing out hypocrisy hasn’t worked for us. it wont change minds and ‘they’ dont care because they are numb/immune(?) to it. it’s a feature of some kind i’d guess.

they just keep throwing stuff till something/anything sticks
look how far back they have to go and how deep they have to dig, and to get what, really?

they arent really idiots
they do it for effect, or to score points politically or in the media
there are a few really dumb and/or true believers
the rest of them just say nasty, annoying, provocative stuff, yes, that they want their rubes to believe.

Someone mentioned it on MSNBC last night in either the pre-game or post-game coverage (I was driving so I don’t know who said it) but they made the point that the GOP base listens to Trump and if he turned on Coulter/Limbaugh, the base would turn on them too. But he’s not even strong enough to do that at this point.

I’m giving Tiff and Barron a pass until they run their mouths and I feel bad for Tiffany knowing what her half sister tried to do. The pecking order for me from worst to best Trump kid is

Ivanka—-Don Jr—-Eric—-Tiffany—-Barron

Barron may actually be somewhat intelligent too. I can’t imagine the three kids of Ivanna having the intellectual curiously to learn their mother’s Czech while Barron has learned some Slovene which as a fellow Slovene-American gets some props from m since I tried learning when I was a little older than he was and I was awful.

re: #145 HappyWarrior

I know. Anyhow, I think for those the team name and logo matter. The Cleveland Indians name doesn’t bother me so much as the Chief Wahoo which they thankfully did get rid of.

I went to the University of Illinois, and our sports name was the Illini, after the Illini tribe, as the state was named, also. We had Chief Illiniwek, who was not a mascot, in that he was not a cartoon character, did not lead cheers or run around yelling at games, or even speak at all. There was a dance he performed which was as authentic as they could do; each performer researched it, and added features. His costume was as authentic as they could get it, made by some Native Americans. We were so proud of him as a symbol of our state and our school. Then one woman, who claimed to be Native American (and maybe she was) went on a multi-year campaign to get rid of him, since she claimed he was offensive to her. And maybe he was.

There were many schools with offensive mascots, but she kept pushing on the NCAA to ban this particular one. There must have been some serious money behind the effort, as she was not anyone in particular. And the NCAA banned Chief Illiniwek, but saw no problem with any of the others at that time.

The U of I still has no mascot, and now no symbol. Perhaps I lacked sensitivity, but no matter how I have tried over the years to see that symbol as a negative thing, I just haven’t been able to get there.

So that is my confession!

re: #3 NO SMOCKING GUN!

Speaking of blackface, a take I have which may not be popular is that its problematic that Warren listed herself as “American Indian” on her Bar registration card in 1986, in that I suspect Native Americans will find her attempt to claim that identity for herself to be offensive.

I talked about this yesterday. My late father was born in Oklahoma, and if Warren’s family was like my extended family, everyone in that generation thought we had Native American ancestry. *Everyone.* I don’t know how many times I heard it. That generation is now dead. This generation has gotten genealogy testing and learned that we’re white. In my case, 63 percent British/Scots/Irish and 36% French/German.

I don’t remember doing anything legal-wise with that information. When I applied to law school (scant months before Warren filled out that Bar card), I did mention I was the first person in my extended family to get a college degree and that my parents only had high school diplomas. But otherwise, I probably looked like a child of a newly middle class family to the university, which was true.

Smith and any other Black of African-American lizards, I’m definitely interested in your opinions here since you guys would have been aware of this in that era early 80’s era that both Northam and Herring were doing this in. My observation is that there was a lot more casual racism that was socially acceptable in those days versus today and that’s something I am glad is changing but we still need to work on it.

Happy, I’ll be 40 this year- so I don’t have a true adult understanding of this point in time(early 80’s). I am consciously aware of what blackface was because there were some cartoons that were shown(Think Merry Melodies or Silly Symphonies) that would have the “Mr. Bojangles” and Cab Calloway caricatures in blackface. I knew enough, and was told enough by other adults that this wasn’t something that was okay.

The last couple of days have been exhausted. So we’re pretty much guaranteed to lose Virginia right as redistricting is looming, another state we really can’t afford to lose and yet…we probably should, if the top 3 dems in the State are in this mess like this?

But again, the fact that this is happening while the GOP continues to skate by on their even worse sins especially when the Media magnifies our sins if/when they exist, and utterly ignores the GOPs or passes them off as ‘boys will be boys’….

I really don’t know what to do. I get the idea that we need some moral highground to actually fight racism and all this shit…but it feels like all the high ground we claim amounts to shit when the GOP literally lives with no consequences for anything, even open outright racism and hate.

I swear, I’m getting close to the point where I do start disassociating from the country’s symbols, because these lackwits aren’t replacing them, and that just means when they invariably get into a war that ends with the country externally-liberated, they’ll all have to be abandoned and replaced then, as they’ll have the same connotations as the swastikas whether German or Southern. So I don’t blame other Dems for not wearing a symbol that’s soon to go toxic.

A Cranky One  Feb 6, 2019 • 4:13:09pm

re: #328 jaunte

Makes me wonder how widespread a prank imaginary friends with full paperwork have been.

At a previous job, our group had a stuffed animal (a fox) that we treated as a mascot. We received notice that all ID badges were being replaced for security reasons. Since one of the groups SO was in charge of making the new badges, we were able to get an official badge with the fox’s picture and name, which we attached to the stuffed fox (and yes, we could have gotten into trouble).

A member of another group was complaining about the security folks, claiming they didn’t pay attention to the badges and so he felt the re-badging was stupid. To prove his point, he decided to walk into the building wearing the fox’s badge instead of his own, to demonstrate that no one pays attention.

Being evil and all, we tipped off the security folks at the entrance. When we walked in, they stopped him, looked carefully at the badge picture and at him and back at the badge. And then let him in the building.

We called him Foxy after that. He never lived it down.

The biggest problem in this whole mess is that swing voters are experts at finding excuses to vote Republican. E.g., this mess in VA will make them skittish about Democrats for a while, but the fact that the GOP has been the party of racism longer than most voters have been alive never registers. At all.

I’m beginning to think it’s necessary to have some kind of nation-wide remedial education program on what and who is racist, using Trump as the main case study. But everyone outside of team D will instantly reject any such attempt.

Yes. As soon as I saw this letterhead:

…I knew it was over. That firm turned down Avenatti’s client due to credibility issues, so if they’ve taken on Tyson’s case, they must have vetted it. Also, it’s not like she just came up with the accusation now - she first made it back in 2017. So unless someone turns up evidence she’s been paid off by a GOPer ratfucker, I see no reason to doubt her story :/ Same as Dr Blasey Ford - what on earth does she have to gain by lying?

Looks real, real bad.

Also interesting…the GOP seems real skittish about touching this.

Honestly, this is kinda where I’m at right now. My day today was miserable in large part thanks to the fact that spineless management basically let a bunch of guys get away with shoddy and unethical practices because it was easier. It’s like, what motivation is there to play fair if life rewards those who don’t?

Like, it’s cynical as fuck, and I hate that it’s cynical as fuck, but it feels like the only thing that makes sense in an atmosphere that rewards cynicism and punishes good faith.

I don’t think it would be very accurate, since each manufacturer has slightly different designs for their batteries. The demo would be more convincing if he’d used two Eveready or two Duracells. And used a servo to drop them simultaneously from rest.

I’m doubtful this “test” works, because the density of battery as it discharges can’t change substantially if at all. You’re not removing any material from the battery when you use it (electrons leave and enter), so the mass doesn’t change. The volume of the stuff inside might change, but not enough to change the dynamic behavior of the cell as it falls.

My impression as well. Just looked at a diagram of a battery interior and don’t see any mechanism for mass transfer. Without a mass transfer (fresh battery heavier on the bottom, bad battery heavier at the top), I don’t see how the bounce test would work.

As you note, it’s bad experimental design. Too many variables.

I don’t know if it’s a lie but I do know guilty or not, he did himself no favors if the reports of her calling her the fucking bitch last night are true. I hope he’s not guilty. I genuinely like the guy and thought he was very bold to stand up during the Robert E. Lee haiography but I can’t discount this.

But he himself corroborates the fact that a sexual encounter took place. That makes it a case of “consensual or not”, and while I’d agree it would be next to impossible to secure a criminal conviction in this case, we’re talking about the court of public opinion.

Exactly and I’m sorry but as painful as it is, we have to be consistent even if it’s someone we like.

Did she have witnesses or have people that recalled her recalling the incident later? From what I recall with Dr. Ford, she had her husband remember that he brought it up in counseling which the therapist’s notes concurred with. It’s quite possible that it may come out that Professor Tyson mentioned it to someone at some point too. But fair enough. I just hope you can see why i’m bothered by all this.

Let’s pretend for a moment we don’t have to deal with the GOP. How would we want VA to shake out? My thought is:
1. Northam, as far as I’ve heard, hasn’t actually apologized. I feel that at this point he will no more authority as the head of the Democratic party in VA, and he needs to resign.
2. It’s too early for me to say about Fairfax, but based on the fact that she stated this earlier, I don’t give him much of a chance. But, why did VA vote for him if this was out? I suspect some of it was related to his opponent.
3. Herring seems to have taken the correct first steps. It would be a good opportunity for him to come out and talk about the 80s in the south, and own it and explore how things have changed.

Now, to take reality into account. The GOP needs to eat shit for not having any standards at all.
