Hey now,

Definitely. I really wanted to believe it wasn’t true but it’s looking very credible. I’m so disgusted how messed up my fellow men can be towards women. God knows I’m not perfect. I’ve said bitch. and tbh, I don’t think Fairfax is gonna get a pass with two seemingly credible claims of Rape on his docket. Northam, probably should go… Herring, I find his transgressions a lot less offensive (Kurtis Blow versus Minstrel acts) but I would prefer to leave this up to the voters and members of the Democratic Party of Virginia to make the call. Nothing says that they all have to go now but my guess is that the opposition research industry in Virginia for political candidates is a very happening job field right now.

As I said the other day, Herring hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory through this by joining the chorus of voices saying that Northam needed to go the moment the photo became public, but then backtracking days later when Fairfax become a political liability himself and thus made the AG next in line. The best choice at this point would be for Fairfax to resign, Northam to name a new LG, and then he and Herring both resign so that the new LG can take the top seat and appoint their replacements.

Broken record here: I remain uncomfortable with telling people who sinned 35 years ago and now reject this behavior that the past action was unforgivable and would prevent any future public service. My forgiveness applies only to a deplorable sin that was (a) not a crime then or now and (b) did not personally harm someone and (c) did not involve belonging to an organization such as the KKK. Herring and Northam would be covered by my policy, but clearly not Fairfax. We should not replace flawed people with bad behavior from decades ago with people who are today engaging in actions that are far more damaging to our body politic and the future of our nation.

Northam’s offense is largely unforgivable because of he was either wearing blackface in a parody of an old-time minstrel show or KKK robes, neither of which were socially acceptable even in 1984 outside of the Deep South. Herring could be seen as less offensive because he admits it was in parody of a then-popular celebrity, but by his own standard (set when Northam was found out) he should also resign.

I’m trying to think of good names for who could be included in a VA Exec Branch. I think you gotta consider Perriello. Two of the three previous Dem nominees are now in the Senate. McAullife can’t re-enter. And I honestly don’t think Creigh Deeds would be a good fit or want it even. But here’s a name who I admit I didn’t know before tonight since she’s from a totally different part of the state than me but her name is Jeion Ward.

Yeah unfortunately when she ran last time, her primary opponent used it as a means of rallying the progressive activist types in the base against her candidacy. Which is a shame because and of course I’m biased but I thought my candidate was the better. More experienced and more politically savvy. I think aside from defeating fascism, I think I love a good WWII movie because it shows how we had people from so many backgrounds unite against that threat. My cousin Mike, man, his story couldn’t be anymore different than Ira Hayes. Mike wasn’t even born in the US and Ira Hayes’ family had been here generations in Arizona. But they both were Marines in a shared cause and one winter day in Iwo Jima, they and four other young men raised an American flag. It was far from the most heroic thing they ever did in their service but it immortalized them forever.

Blind Frog Belly White  Feb 8, 2019 • 5:02:34pm

My take on Virginia:

Northam: I’m willing to believe that the blackface /KKK picture wasn’t him, and that he never knew about it before last week, because apparently the yearbook came out in the fall and he was already in the Army, and yearbooks are less and less a thing as you go from high school to college and farther along. Part of why I believe him is that he admitted to doing blackface another time. But in his press conference, he seemed not to understand the seriousness of the whole thing, and was only prevented from moonwalking by his wife. This makes his contrition seem a bit…off. He should resign, because that whole thing lost everyone’s confidence.

Fairfax: I had been concerned that one accuser, in a sexual situation that started out consensual, might be the result of two people honestly remembering the same event differently, especially when viewed through the lens of time. Absence of contemporaneous corroboration is also a problem. Left me uneasy but not certain what to do.

Then an accusation of rape, with contemporaneous corroboration dropped. He should be gone yesterday.

Herring: Actually came forward before it came out, and I don’t even know if it was going to come out. His statement read as genuinely contrite. Of course, in this situation this is obviously the best strategy, and could be completely calculated. But of the three, I’m the least inclined to call for his resignation.

really? kickass. My dad guarded an ammo dump on Maui, according to history he kept the Japanese out.

Oh, he was the guy! Good for him! My Dad got everywhere a week late. Arrived in Hawaii a week after Pearl Harbor, got to Normandy a week after D-Day, The Ardennes a week after the Battle of the Bulge, then got sent back to Hawaii to prepare for Operation Olympic. Fortunately he missed that altogether.

The Pakled captain was not played by Daniel Benzali. The Pakled captain was portrayed by the late Christopher Collins, who played a few roles in the STAR TREK franchise, as well as being a voice actor for animation in the late seventies and eighties under the name Chris Latta, including STAR BLAZERS, GI JOE, and TRANSFORMERS.

Not just GI Joe and Transformers, but Cobra Commander and Starscream.

Ironically, most of the “tax refunds” probably got lost when people didn’t update their W-4’s after the tax code changed. I got lucky because I was already over-withholding and because my job change forced me to update my W-4.

I just don’t know how she and Kirk can seriously go around likening modern liberals to Nazis and then say unironically that the problem was when the Nazis went expansionist. At best, Candice is profoundly stupid and should have been taking notes in the classes of those liberal academics that her and Charlie so disdain. At worst, she’s cool with authoritarian right wing fascism. I bet you she tries to claim she’s the victim if she gets hit hard on this as she should.

Yah — they deliberately changed the withholding so people would get an increase in pay during 2018 — in advance of the election. People wouldn’t know until 2019 what they actually owed. So your net taxes might be little changed but they were reallocated.

This does not apply of course to those of us living in blue states many of whom are being hit hard by the reduction in SALT; and of course, there was the elimination of exemptions. This was all timed perfectly so that the real impact on taxes was deferred to after the election.

Oh man yes. Without spoiling it. Absolutely. WWI’s been occupying a lot of my imagination lately since we had the centennial just this past November but I’m also thinking of my mom and dad’s four grandfathers between them. Born in four different countries, living totally different places, doing different work, speaking different languages, etc. None of them served directly in the war but as I know military service was mandatory, I know that my mom’s grandfathers would have had brothers or close cousins that would have had serve the Austrian-Hungarian empire, that my Dad’s Dad’s Dad would have had cousins in the German Army and through his wife nephews in the AEF. And can’t help but to wonder how my Dad’s Mom’s father may have felt being of Irish descent and having tons of neighbors that were born in the old country.

In a similar vein, what we’re probably going to hear in coming months as a defense against the reality that the 1% walked away with a huge haul due to this tax bill is “Look at how much more (insert famous billionaire) paid to the IRS this year! re: #25 Targetpractice

I dunno if Texas is the Deep South (probably not) but even we liberal children of conservative parents attending the “public Ivy” known as the University of Texas at Austin knew the Klan was bad news. There’s a Facebook chat group for our old co-op from the 1980s and I posted “what crimes did you commit that you’d be ashamed of today?” One person noted that she and a friend went around and stole a lawn jockey statue from a frat house. She wasn’t ashamed. Another said that she wished she had pictures from when she was arrested at a protest (but she didn’t say which). Another person admitted to being one of the 200 people who mooned the Klan at the state capitol in the early 1990s. “And, as far as I know, nobody got busted for stealing that John Anderson sign,” wrote another. The sign was big and ended up being incorporated into the stage we put up for our house parties.

I’ve wanted to go back to the co-op and just sit there and regale the current residents of tales of people older than their parents who were just having a lot of fun as we went through school. But we weren’t painting ourselves in blackface, nor were we having racist parties like the frats a few blocks to the east.

Yeah it’s tough. It might be easier if the other side even attempted to try to practice the morals they claim they have.

She knows. Her parents were prominent socialist activists in their city in Japan when she was growing up. In some ways I thing she married me to leave that behind (and love) but found out later that her parents’ fight was real and that her new home was kind of fucked up, too.

Well, if we act like purity ponies, we end up with Trump. Northam and Herring should have known better 35 years ago —- but they were young and foolish and engaged in despicable behavior — and I haven’t heard that they physically harmed anyone. Is there recent behavior of theirs that warrants removal from office? They have apologized; let us try for reconciliation instead of vengeance.

I once saw a kinematics analysis of that scene in a physics teaching journal. Long story short: it would have been impossible for a bus traveling at 50 mph to jump that gap. Setting the physics aside, the premise was the bomb would go off if the bus went slower than 50 mph. So, what happens when the wheels are no longer on the pavement and then suddenly land on the pavement?

No ordinary bus (or car ftm) could survive the kind of jumps Hollywood cars do. Stunt cars have special suspensions installed for the jumps and slides, and the stunt car is not the same as the one being driven in other scenes.

I don’t know if you ever played the Cyberpunk RPG, but the creators based the weapon stats on FBI data. Which meant that a bullet was a real take you out of action injury, and it wasn’t very hard to fight die. Tended to limit the in-game fire fights.

That’s why there’s typically multiple copies for almost every car/truck/etc. involved in stunts in movies, including “hero cars” (the vehicles typically shown in detail on-camera that are not modified for stunt work).

Traveller, 2300 AD & (Especially) Twilight 2000 - all from Game Designer’s Workshop started by a combat veteran - all had very realistic firefight rules. Twilight 2000 was especially brutal since they were soldiers trying to get home after WWIII collapsed in the aftermath of limited nuclear exchanges.

People who would entertain this kind of rank superstition are capable of anything:
Bakker: Trump’s Skin Tone Caused By ‘Holy Spirit Flowing Through Him’

Last week, the White House press office claimed the president’s skin tone was due to “good genes.”

Bakker had a similar line of thinking.

“Trump has been blessed by God, his skin color is merely the holy spirit flowing through him,” said Bakker on his YouTube show.

As crazy as Bakker’s view is, it’s pretty common among Evangelical Christians.

re: #267 HappyWarrior

I actually found out that a second grandfather was murdered and unsolved at that. I’d love to find who did it.

My grandfather moved away from his family and changed his name. He never told my mom about his family, but apparently when he was drunk, he’d let slip some information about a town in Michigan and a last name. My mom, in the late 1970s, was able to write to the post office in that town and they gave her the name of a family they thought fit! Can you image that happening today?! Anyway, she was able to contact them and her dad and his family were able to reunite.

The thing that is weird is that my grandfather apparently let slip something when drunk about the reason why he left Michigan and his family is that he was on the run because he had punched a cop and killed him. I haven’t been able to find anything, but am hoping to get my work caught up to spend more time trying to research this.

I’ve never heard of her, but she’s a great percussionist!

She’s Indonesian, one of several outstanding female drummers in Asia, I think she just turned 15.

I think I’ll let my friend Homer speak on Speed here.

My brother-in-law was the guy hanging out of the helicopter shooting that movie!

re: #259 BlueGrl21

You remember the thing in Texas when a woman was trying to have another woman killed over cheerleading? Because her daughter didn’t make the squad? HBO did a movie about it.

The woman she tried to have killed is my aunt. Her daughter, my cousin, is the one that made the squad instead of her daughter.

Holy cow!
