When I was in high school there was a roaming band of cruel, mean-ass nerds. overstatement of deductions - that’ll be in those tax returns
sources of some income - that’ll be in those tax returns and might tell us something

i had my first bike, a yamaha R5 350 two stroke, and wanted to move up. i had touring in my blood. i actually melted a hole in one of the pistons from overloading the bike with gear and a passenger and trying to ride 100 miles out to the east end of long island

anyway was looking at the SR500 and the dealer talked me out of it. his loss.
i ended up buying a used honda cb750 (what else)? had it for 6 months.
then bought my first harley and never looked back.

i know they’re not for everybody, and i’d never buy another new one now.
still 38 odd years and probably 350k+ miles and whatever ‘problems’ i’ve had i wouldnt trade a minute of it

We use one here in the DFW area called Energy Ogre. We pay them $10/month, and they shop for a good rate for us, switching about every 6 months. The rates have been about half of TXU or Reliant.

Yeah, I would research that particular person, but the concept isn’t. It helps here in Texas that, due to one of the few things Texas Republicans did that I agree with, the company that owns the power lines isn’t the company that delivers the electricity. Thus, we’ve got enough of the latter to be competitive.

I wish they would do the same thing to cell service in this country.

Thanks for the information. My electric and gas are low enough for me. The only bill I would like lowered is my water bill. The water company is owned by the city and I do not believe anything can be done with it.

Yeah, I would research that particular person, but the concept isn’t. It helps here in Texas that, due to one of the few things Texas Republicans did that I agree with, the company that owns the power lines isn’t the company that delivers the electricity. Thus, we’ve got enough of the latter to be competitive.

I wish they would do the same thing to cell service in this country.

Cell service is a bit more complicated because if you have too much coverage, you can start getting radio interference. I’m actually thinking this approach would be far better with ISP’s.

We wouldn’t have overlapping service from different companies if we basically had a single set of hardware, which means it could spread out into the areas that aren’t currently getting as well covered.

As to his not owning up, it seems entirely possible that he forgot, or didn’t think much of it. Not just white privilege showing itself — it was 34 years ago (and I find his statement that the yearbook picture wasn’t him plausible now that I’ve heard the background).

For me, yes. The son of my mom’s best friend was shot and killed in LA in a street holdup when he was walking with friends after lunch (this was in the 1980s). I don’t know the details of the incident. I knew him because we stayed at their house whenever my travel hockey team would play in Indianapolis, and even though he was probably 6 or 7 years older he talked to me like a friend—otherwise I wouldn’t have remember him.

The recent tax cut hurt anyone taking deductions. A lot of not upper middle class people take some but not all of their deductions in order to get a refund. The tax changes meant that for people who didn’t change their withholding were going to get less, or possibly owe, because the standard deduction changed. And that will affect red states.

But the thing is, because the Administration changed the withholding calculation, people who had gotten refunds reliably for years are finding themselves owing taxes because they didn’t have enough withheld. I don’t know how it finally washed but they were pushing for noFederal deduction for mortgage interest, property taxes, and state/local income tax. Blue states pay more in state income tax, housing cost more so mortgage interest is higher and property taxes are higher. I think they backed off but capped total deduction.

My wife is watching the PBS documentary about Mister Rogers. The first week of the show, which started in 1968, the King proclaimed that he did not like change. His solution: He had a wall built.

I also learned that behind-the-scene’s Fred was not a prude. One of the funny stories that was told was about how if people left their cameras around, someone would grab it, take a (random) shot, and put the camera back. One time, the floor guy got a hold of Roger’s camera, and had someone take a picture of him showing his ass. The guy didn’t hear about it until Christmas, when Rogers gave it back as a poster-sized Christmas gift.

It’s OK because they’re Republicans. The GOP is allowed to do whatever the fuck they want to achieve their ends. Nobody will call them on it - well, except you, and us, and well-meaning citizens, but we’re just a fart in the wind compared to the media and the political establishment.

I should have checked last time Trump’s Jackson fetish was brought up, but this time I did look up “Jefferson-Jackson Day”. Unfortunately, it’s still called that in virtually all states.

My tax preparer is getting yelled at by people asking why their returns aren’t being filled out on an actual postcard.

My wife is watching the PBS documentary about Mister Rogers. The first week of the show, which started in 1968, the King proclaimed that he did not like change. His solution: He had a wall built.

I also learned that behind-the-scene’s Fred was not a prude. One of the funny stories that was told was about how if people left their cameras around, someone would grab it, take a (random) shot, and put the camera back. One time, the floor guy got a hold of Roger’s camera, and had someone take a picture of him showing his ass. The guy didn’t hear about it until Christmas, when Rogers gave it back as a poster-sized Christmas gift.

Haven’t watched it yet, but my favorite Fred Rogers story is from Jonathan Kozol about
when he took Fred to the school in the South Bronx where he (Kozol) had long interacted with and written about the inequities in education and opportunity. He was working with the children/writing “Ordinary Resurrections.” Kozol, one of my heroes, and Rogers were friends.

Per Kozol’s account:

Occasionally I’ll bring people with me to meet the children. The person they loved most is a man named Mr. Rogers. Fred Rogers said he’d like to meet the kids, but asked me if I thought that it would be intrusive. (I couldn’t help smiling at the thought of Mr. Rogers being intrusive.) We went up on the No. 6 train, and it was a nice experience to ride with Mr. Rogers on the train. There he was, the same sweet guy that children have been learning from for 40 years. He even had his sweater and his sneakers and his bow tie, and people on the train kept looking at him kind of strangely. We got off the train at Brook Avenue. We walked one block, and a garbage truck came screeching to a halt. The driver, a 50-year-old black man, jumped out and hugged Mr. Rogers.

We went to St. Ann’s, where Elio spotted Mr. Rogers from across the crowded room. He zoomed straight across the room with his arms spread wide. At the moment of collision, he gave him a big kiss on the forehead. He said, “Welcome to my neighborhood, Mr. Rogers.”
