Country Music for 2019: Merle Hazard, “(Gimme Some of That) Ol’ Atonal Music”

Humor • Views: 31,858

YouTube

I was already laughing at the lyrics, but I totally fell out at the banjo solo.

A country singer reminisces, tunefully, about his late father, who was a composer of atonal music. Written and sung by Merle Hazard. Featuring Alison Brown and her friends. Produced by Alison Brown at Compass Sound Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Now available for purchase or streaming on iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon, Google Play, etc. Video directed by John Moessner. Closed captions provided. Visit https://www.merlehazard.com. Lyric at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M0bGjDW7oZr7wpJx75SC7ysmbFjWpZs8s3mt0W_YAGQ/edit?usp=sharing

I commented the other day, the John Cage break was classic in this video. But the banjo was pretty fun too.

Edit to add: Allison Brown is the banjo player.

Followed Charles’s early post in the last thread to add to the Bill Mitchell ridicule and only wasn’t CL’d because I noticed there was already a post to this thread.

And because I managed to CL myself yet again just before that…

CO2 makes up .004 of the Earth’s atmosphere, or 4 parts per 1000. CO2 levels have increased roughly 39% since 1750.

Global warming “scientists” would have us believe that an increase of roughly 1 part per 1000 in 300 years has caused global warming?

Rubbish. Junk science.

as if the admittedly minute concentration of anything is proof of its lethality - or any other property

When I was in high school there was a roaming band of cruel, mean-ass nerds. They were convinced they were smarter than everyone else, they had no limits to what they would say, they said the most vile things possible to be “edgy.” They were sexist as hell and thought doing things like lecturing about racial purity was just having an alternative viewpoint and challenging the intellect of us sheep. They were absolutely insufferable and ridiculous.

This is them.

The UK launch branch of Turning Point, a right-wing student movement for “free markets, limited government and public responsibility”, has just launched on Twitter but it hasn’t gone entirely to plan.

Turning Point, which has the backing of Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees-Mogg (so it must be good) launched as @TPointUK on Twitter and is keen to reassure its followers that young people can be right wing too.

“The Democrats in Congress yesterday were vicious and totally showed their cards for everyone to see. When the Republicans had the Majority they never acted with such hatred and scorn! The Dems are trying to win an election in 2020 that they know they cannot legitimately win!”

— President Trump, on Twitter.

i wanna repeat this

part of the reason trump sees house democrat’s behavior as different from the R’s is that the R’s never did any oversight

everyone knows the executive is subject to oversight

trump came in with two friendly houses

in the very early days we all hoped the R senate and house would at a minimum ‘do their job’, protect their turf, etc.

instead they nearly instantly rolled over completely.

the only ‘questioning’ he got was from some in the media and mueller, sdny, etc.
*we* kept talking about no one questioning him and why he wanted the job etc

the only reason this whole notion has come up now - of him being ‘questioned’ is because of the midterms.

this is actually what minimally normal constitutionality looks like.

overstatement of deductions - that’ll be in those tax returns

from the previous thread re the SR500, this is my envious face

i had my first bike, a yamaha R5 350 two stroke, and wanted to move up. i had touring in my blood. i actually melted a hole in one of the pistons from overloading the bike with gear and a passenger and trying to ride 100 miles out to the east end of long island

anyway was looking at the SR500 and the dealer talked me out of it. his loss.
i ended up buying a used honda cb750 (what else)? had it for 6 months.
then bought my first harley and never looked back.

i know they’re not for everybody, and i’d never buy another new one now.
still 38 odd years and probably 350k+ miles and whatever ‘problems’ i’ve had i wouldnt trade a minute of it

The Clintons released over a decade’s worth of tax records for themselves as well as their Foundation…and the GOP demanded more.

Hillary provided a certified letter from her physician that she was healthy and fit for office…and the GOP demanded her medical records.

Hillary turned over her own email server as well as tens of thousands of emails that she’d been accused of “hiding”…and the GOP demanded she turn over her personal emails as well.

But please, let us hear more about how worried they are about “privacy.”///////

Yeah, I would research that particular person, but the concept isn’t. It helps here in Texas that, due to one of the few things Texas Republicans did that I agree with, the company that owns the power lines isn’t the company that delivers the electricity. Thus, we’ve got enough of the latter to be competitive.

Cell service is a bit more complicated because if you have too much coverage, you can start getting radio interference. I’m actually thinking this approach would be far better with ISP’s.

We wouldn’t have overlapping service from different companies if we basically had a single set of hardware, which means it could spread out into the areas that aren’t currently getting as well covered.

At the very least, I had no doubt that the Repugs who wanted to replace him do not have prettier pasts, and no-one will hold them to account, while he might be inclined to examine the matter.

As to his not owning up, it seems entirely possible that he forgot, or didn’t think much of it. Not just white privilege showing itself — it was 34 years ago (and I find his statement that the yearbook picture wasn’t him plausible now that I’ve heard the background).

For me, yes. The son of my mom’s best friend was shot and killed in LA in a street holdup when he was walking with friends after lunch (this was in the 1980s). I don’t know the details of the incident. I knew him because we stayed at their house whenever my travel hockey team would play in Indianapolis, and even though he was probably 6 or 7 years older he talked to me like a friend—otherwise I wouldn’t have remember him.

Yeah, I would research that particular person, but the concept isn’t. It helps here in Texas that, due to one of the few things Texas Republicans did that I agree with, the company that owns the power lines isn’t the company that delivers the electricity. Thus, we’ve got enough of the latter to be competitive.

I wish they would do the same thing to cell service in this country.

The recent tax cut hurt anyone taking deductions. A lot of not upper middle class people take some but not all of their deductions in order to get a refund. The tax changes meant that for people who didn’t change their withholding were going to get less, or possibly owe, because the standard deduction changed. And that will affect red states.

115

re: #110 Old Liberal

But the thing is, because the Administration changed the withholding calculation, people who had gotten refunds reliably for years are finding themselves owing taxes because they didn’t have enough withheld. And for most people, that will make them think they’re paying more even if they aren’t, overall.

My wife is watching the PBS documentary about Mister Rogers. The first week of the show, which started in 1968, the King proclaimed that he did not like change. His solution: He had a wall built.

I also learned that behind-the-scene’s Fred was not a prude. One of the funny stories that was told was about how if people left their cameras around, someone would grab it, take a (random) shot, and put the camera back. It’s OK because they’re Republicans. The GOP is allowed to do whatever the fuck they want to achieve their ends. Nobody will call them on it - well, except you, and us, and well-meaning citizens, but we’re just a fart in the wind compared to the media and the political establishment.

In the universe where Trump is president.

We’re in the bad Universe. The amount of people making apologia for Candice Owens’ apologia for Hitler should have made that fairly clear.

As someone said: These young adults, and slightly older adults like AOC, grew up on Harry Potter and Hunger Games. They have been trained to understand adults can sometimes be fucked up.

My friend the libertarian has stated that after seeing Warren’s handwritten “American Indian” response on the Texas(?) application, that he doesn’t want to hear another word from her.

So yeah. The Pocahontas thing works like a charm.

They’ve managed to swiftboat her out of the fucking gate. And it’s pretty much a show that they can destroy anyone they want if they put their force behind it because the media will gleefully parrot it ad nauseam while ignoring any and all fucking GOP sins ever.

I have no words.

Embattled Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax released a new statement Saturday evening vowing not to resign and calling on the FB to investigate the two sexual assault allegations made against him.

I should have checked last time Trump’s Jackson fetish was brought up, but this time I did look up “Jefferson-Jackson Day”. Unfortunately, it’s still called that in virtually all states.

So of course we get red trolls saying things like this, and the only response I have so far is:

Here in South by dog Carolina, we changed ours to the Blue Palmetto Dinner in 2017. Damn, aren’t we progressive.

My tax preparer is getting yelled at by people asking why their returns aren’t being filled out on an actual postcard.

Oh and they are screaming at him because this year they’re owing thousands to the IRS.

re: #171 Belafon

My wife is watching the PBS documentary about Mister Rogers. The first week of the show, which started in 1968, the King proclaimed that he did not like change. His solution: He had a wall built.

I also learned that behind-the-scene’s Fred was not a prude. One of the funny stories that was told was about how if people left their cameras around, someone would grab it, take a (random) shot, and put the camera back. One time, the floor guy got a hold of Roger’s camera, and had someone take a picture of him showing his ass. The guy didn’t hear about it until Christmas, when Rogers gave it back as a poster-sized Christmas gift.

Haven’t watched it yet, but my favorite Fred Rogers story is from Jonathan Kozol about
when he took Fred to the school in the South Bronx where he (Kozol) had long interacted with and written about the inequities in education and opportunity. He was working with the children/writing “Ordinary Resurrections.” Kozol, one of my heroes, and Rogers were friends.

Per Kozol’s account:

Occasionally I’ll bring people with me to meet the children. The person they loved most is a man named Mr. Rogers. Fred Rogers said he’d like to meet the kids, but asked me if I thought that it would be intrusive. (I couldn’t help smiling at the thought of Mr. Rogers being intrusive.) We went up on the No. 6 train, and it was a nice experience to ride with Mr. Rogers on the train. There he was, the same sweet guy that children have been learning from for 40 years. He even had his sweater and his sneakers and his bow tie, and people on the train kept looking at him kind of strangely. We got off the train at Brook Avenue. We walked one block, and a garbage truck came screeching to a halt. The driver, a 50-year-old black man, jumped out and hugged Mr. Rogers.

We went to St. Ann’s, where Elio spotted Mr. Rogers from across the crowded room. He zoomed straight across the room with his arms spread wide. At the moment of collision, he gave him a big kiss on the forehead. He said, “Welcome to my neighborhood, Mr. Rogers.”
