Someone was asking in the Kasky tweet for data from one of the people who claim that vaccines don’t help. So, I went to look and see what polio cases were. I found two interesting and telling images.

Not very many.
The first shot sure looks like downtown Seattle—except for there being no water a couple of blocks away from the bottom of the hill. And the street being two-way, of course.

And that even WITH so few cars compared to the present day. I didn’t realise it was a bad smog day until I saw how badly City Hall was obscured while on the second-to-last street. And then you recall that this was still 20 times better than it would be by about the time I was born.
And now we have people setting aside the Clean Air Act who want to bring it all back.

That looked like LA in the late 1940s, there was an advertisement for an RCA television on one of the billboards. And yes, the smog was really horrible. That was one thing I remember about childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s before the EPA. The pollution from the various industries and refineries off San Pablo Bay and Suisun Bay was awful.

You can still see the Red and Yellow car tracks and stops.
I think the first sequence is starting on Grand and then turning west on 4th Street.

More than that, I think: but still: it’s L.A. How many pedestrians are you ever/have ever been able to find in that city?
Yeah, I noticed the relative lack of traffic, too (time of day??) but did notice that most of the streets were lined with parked cars, and that the parking lots were fairly full. And the smog, of course….

Since I’m a denizen of Noirish LA over at skyscraperpages.com, I’ve seen this video before. Most of the buildings are long gone, though you can see the LA Central Library which is still there and I recognized the old PacBell building. Some have commented that it starts at 1st and Grand, my guess is 2nd since it’s above a tunnel(if it was 3rd we’d see Angle’s Flight). If you are in the LA area you should pay a visit to the LA County Museum of Natural History where they have a permanent exhibit called “Becoming LA”. The have a portion of a model of the city that was constructed by the WPA in the late 30’s.

The smog in that film looks nice and chewy—like the blowby from everybody’s crankcases hovering around. Positive crankcase ventilation started being required on new cars (in California) in, IIRC, 1961. Took a while to do any good, though.
Bunker Hill was my dad’s neighborhood when he was a kid; his parents left the neighborhood and moved to South Pasadena in the late 1940’s.

Nah….my dad told me when I was a kid that by the mid-50s, Bunker Hill was becoming a slum and he shared your opinion that one big earthquake probably would’ve knocked down a lot of the buildings there. He remarked it was sad to see the old neighborhood go, but that’s how it goes….nothing lasts forever (especially in L.A.).

Of the more than 1,600 generic drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration since January of 2017, more than 700—or 43 percent—are not for sale in the US, according to a new analysis by Kaiser Health News.
The finding means that many pricy, brand-name drugs are not facing the competition that could help drive down soaring prices. Among the drugs missing in action are generic versions of the expensive blood thinner Brilinta and the HIV medication Truvada. Moreover, of the approved drugs that would offer a brand-name drug its first competition, 36 percent are being held off the market, the analysis found.
Experts told KHN that the reasons drug makers may withhold an approved generic from the market are varied. Industry consolidation has made buying, manufacturing, and distributing generics more difficult in recent years. Generic drug makers also, as always, face patent litigation from brand-name makers. Then there’s potentially anti-competitive deals, in which brand-name drug makers simply pay generic makers to keep their product off the market for a while—a so-called “pay for delay” tactic.
Lastly, there are internal decisions within a generic company that can lead to shelving a drug. For instance, a drug maker may shift its business strategy while it’s waiting for the drug to get approved, or the maker may delay a drug’s entry to the market until a strategic time.

Lawmakers had been trading offers, trying to finalize how much money could go to barriers along the border as President Trump demands money for his wall. Trump has called for $5.7 billion, but lawmakers were trying to find a number between $1.3 billion and $2 billion that would be acceptable to both sides.
At the same time, Democrats were trying to limit the number of detention beds that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency would have access to. Democrats want to cap detention beds as a way to limit aggressive detention activities by ICE. One of the people familiar with the situation said that was the issue that led to the impasse.
Lawmakers and Trump face a Feb. 15 deadline to pass new legislation to keep the government open. If they don’t, large portions of the government will begin to shut down.

Good article here from the Houston Chronicle on rampant sexual abuse within the Southern Baptists - and their leadership’s apparent refusal to do much about it.
The SBC has resisted creating a database of predators for years and years. They say they can do nothing about it, due to “church autonomy.” That’s garbage. The SBC and its state organizations have had no problem tossing out churches that ordain women or which treat LGBTQ people as equals. But for some reason (I’d say it’s patriarchy run rampant), they refuse to deal with the child sexual predators in their midst.
This is, of course, all of a piece with the Catholic sex abuse scandal, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram did a package on Independent Fundamental Baptist churches shuttling abusers around in December 2018:

What could have been said that would bring him down? He was the worst human being among them all, which is precisely what made him the most desired candidate. Good point. And I gotta remember the big assist from the media. How many hours of free press did Trump get that really no other candidate got? I mean, I could be wrong, but it seems unlikely that the first African slaves brought to Jamestown in 1619 were considered “indentured servants” of any sort. IIRC, English law at the time (and for quite a while afterwards) recognized a definite distinction between the “indentured” and the “enslaved”. That’s kinda my recollection from history as well. Blacks were at first treated as indentured servants, with a fixed time of service, but then white folks decided they didn’t want to let them go at the end of their indenture and they had the law changed. Somewhere along the line they got a court to rule that only blacks could be actual, lifelong slaves whose children were born into the same lifelong bondage.
It may seem like a distinction without a difference, but for my money it reflects worse on the colonists than if they’d just started out with slavery as it eventually developed. They started out with the idea of freeing them after their indenture was up like any other indentured servant, but they liked the free labor so much and so decided the blacks were inferior people whom it was their right to actually own.

That’s kinda my recollection from history as well. Blacks were at first treated as indentured servants, with a fixed time of service, but then white folks decided they didn’t want to let them go at the end of their indenture and they had the law changed. Somewhere along the line they got a court to rule that only blacks could be actual, lifelong slaves whose children were born into the same lifelong bondage.
It may seem like a distinction without a difference, but for my money it reflects worse on the colonists than if they’d just started out with slavery as it eventually developed. They started out with the idea of freeing them after their indenture was up like any other indentured servant, but they liked the free labor so much and so decided the blacks were inferior people whom it was their right to actually own.
“Culturally so different that rthey wouldn’t be able to handle themselves in freedom” was the excuse, I believe. Ignoring the people who had managed perfectly well before.

Though I was far too young to remember it (less than two years old) I do know the ‘71 Sylmar Quake got my mom smoking again……she’d finally quit smoking about two weeks before the quake hit.

But he’s cunning, within certain limits. He’s not cunning enough to broaden his appeal to a larger electorate, which a smart and cunning person could do. And he’s really only successful with people he can dominate, either by having more money, or by being more powerful - like the GOP in Congress, where he’s demonstrated that there’s a price for disloyalty.
But he’s totally at sea with someone who owes him nothing and whom he can’t dominate. He has no idea how to deal with Nancy Pelosi, for example. She lets his insults run off her, doesn’t believe a word he says, and won’t let herself be buffaloed into doing what he wants.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced last week that it is close to finalizing a conscience protection rule that would allow people to discriminate in health-care settings under cover of law.
The final rule is at the Office of Management and Budget for review and not available to the public. But under the draft rule, which has been made public, health-care providers would be able to refuse to provide treatment, referrals, or assistance with procedures if these activities would violate their stated religious or moral convictions. The deliberately vague language could apply to everyone from receptionists refusing to book appointments to scrub nurses refusing to assist with emergency surgery.

This is true. I don’t see any particular ability that Trump has to misdirect or exploit weakness. His lies are blindingly obvious, his repetitions banal, and his ability to exploit weakness is hardly Machiavellian - it’s nothing more than blunt threats that he lacks the courage to follow through on. None of this reflects any particular ability on his part. He is where he is because he is enabled and protected - by Republicans, by the entirety of the US media, by foreign agents, and most of all by the hordes of white people who desperately want someone to say all the evil things they think out loud.
Underestimating him will not lead to his second term. What will lead to his second term is the US media and cultural ecosystem that wants the worst possible white man to do the worst possible things.

I think that structure is the Republicans deciding to ride Trump for as much benefit as they could get once they saw his popularity.

The only big difference between Trump and your common 21st Century Republican is Trump wasn’t hiding anything, he really wasn’t doing typical Republican politics even though he was going to be favorable to them.
They decided they had nothing to lose and much to gain and went all in.
Now, they are in protective mode. They are saving their butts as much as they can while probably also trying to figure out how they can snake their way out of being tied to The Orange Scourge while keeping his base.
